7 Reasons Why We Want Ariana Grande to Be Our BFF

$

0

The undeniable It Girl of the moment is Ariana Grande. This adorable 20-year-old got her start on Nickelodeon, playing Cat in Victorious. Since her Nick days, Ariana has exploded onto the music scene, collaborating with artists like Mac Miller. Recent singles such as “The Way” or “Baby I” are the literal definition of catchy, and her voice is soooooo good (think early Mariah Carey). Apparently the rest of the world thinks so too, as Grande was nominated for (and won!) Favorite Breakout Artist at this year’s People’s Choice Awards. Basically, we are obsessed with this girl. here are some reasons why!

1. She loves animals.

She's a professed vegan, she frequently posts pictures of her sweet puppies on Instagram (she has three!) and she loves anything cute and cuddly… can we come play with your puppies, Ariana?

2. She’s super stylish.

From her gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana gown at this year’s Grammy’s to her quirky, hippie-inspired outfits that she wears on a daily basis, we can’t get over how chic this gal is. We want to raid her closet and ask her for style advice, like, every day.

3. She knows what’s important.

Ariana loves her family, and she has often thanked her mom and grandparents for their support and love. In the crazy world of Hollywood, it’s super refreshing to have a girl who is so down to earth and has stayed true to her values!

4. She’s so freaking talented!

How have we not mentioned this yet? Grande has one of the most amazing voices we’ve ever heard. It’s a little pop, a little R&B and a little mesmerizing. She really does sound like Mariah Carey... but is it bad if we actually like Ariana’s voice more than MC’s??

5. On that note... it’s all about the music.

Ariana is hardworking and gracious, and she makes her career an absolute priority. She often tweets about how hard she is working at her music and how much she cares about it. Sounds like a genuine girl to us!

6. She likes a good laugh.

We love to be goofy just as much as the next girl… who just so happens to be Ariana, who readily admits she's just as socially awkward as any other teenager-slash-20-something. She’s actually hilarious on TV, and just as funny in real life.

7. She’s not afraid to eat!

FINALLY a celebrity to isn’t afraid to admit she loves food! Grande is a total foodie, and will eat almost anything, but she loves ice cream and cake especially. Want to grab dinner with us sometime, A?

Don’t you guys agree that Ariana is the ultimate girl crush? She’s gorgeous, talented and fun… we couldn’t ask for anything more in a BFF! Please be our friend, Ariana!

Real Live College Guy Dale: Does He Want to Date Me?

$

0

I met this guy through friends last year, and when I ran into him at the end of summer, he asked me to coffee. On a whim, I asked him to my sorority's formal, and we had so much fun. He initiated kissing me and it seemed like he really liked me. Since then, he's asked me to hang out a few times, but I still can't figure out what he wants. He's admittedly a horrible texter and would never think to call or send a "Hey, what's up?" message. Everyone who knows him only says great things about him and wants me to date him, but I'm getting a little tired of the lack of communication. –Perplexed at Poly

Perplexed,

Sigh. I know firsthand what being a horrible texter is like. Unless I really know someone, texting is a challenge. Messages that are too short make it sound like I’m not interested, and messages that are too long come off as sounding long-winded. Finding that perfect in-between that accurately details how I’m feeling at that particular moment can be insanely difficult.

Really though, Perplexed, he’s done everything else right. To me at least, it seems as though he’s definitely dropped a few hints that he’s interested in you. I can’t imagine anything more blatant than going to your formal and initiating a kiss. If you were looking for a sign, that was it.

Still, I think it’s a common misconception that men are bad at communication. What many women seem to forget is that we can’t read minds, so when you don’t outwardly communicate your feelings, we can’t always get an accurate reading and reciprocate those feelings. Do you like this guy? It sounds like it. Have you told him? It doesn’t sound like it. Have you taken the initiative to ask him out again? If not, maybe you should try.

Don’t get me wrong; if the guy likes you he should totally ask you out. But maybe he has a bad case of the nerves, or maybe he doesn’t know how you feel about him. Like I said, guys can’t read minds––unless he knows for certain that you like him, I don’t think he’s going to take the risk of asking you out.

You’re right about one thing though: there is definitely a lack of communication, not just on his end, but on yours as well. If you like him, take the initiative and ask him out. The worst he can say is no, but given the situation, I think you’d get a solid yes.

Why and How You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes

$

0

You might be a master at picking out the right makeup brushes for defined contouring and the perfect romantic smoky eye, but did you also know that you should be cleaning your brushes on the regular?

Failing to clean your brushes results in clogged pores and annoying breakouts. Regular cleaning will help to remove dirt, debris, dead skin cells, oil, and old makeup — even bacteria that get stuck in the bristles. This is a routine that preserves the life of your brushes, helps to apply your makeup more evenly without leftover product in the way, and keeps your skin clear.

I suggest that every time you use your makeup brushes, you provide them with a quick cleaning using a daily brush cleaner. You just spray the formula onto your brushes and wipe them clean onto a paper towel. Every week, you should provide your brushes with a deep cleaning. Here’s my method to do just that:

Materials:

  • Shallow bowl or cup
  • Your Sink
  • A cleansing soap, such as gentle clarifying shampoo or baby shampoo (Personally, I use the Blender Cleanser from Beauty Blender)
  • Paper Towels

Directions:

1. First, you’ll want to rinse your brushes off under lukewarm water to rinse off the basic residue that will be on your brush. Keep your focus on the bristles instead of on your brush handle, since doing so can loosen the glue that connects the brush head to the base.

2. Squirt some of your gentle cleansing soap into your shallow bowl or cup. Then, add some lukewarm water from your sink to the bowl or cup without overflowing it.

3. Swirl your brush head into the bottom of your bowl or cup. Depending on how long ago you washed the brush or how much makeup was on it, you may need to repeat this process twice. Make sure that you clean the brush until the water runs clear.

4. After cleansing, rinse the remaining soap and residue from your brush, while reshaping the bristles.

5. Use a clean paper towel to wipe your brush clean.

6. Leave your brushes flat to dry on a new, clean paper towel.

Now that you know how important it is to clean your brushes and have an easy tutorial of how to do so, make sure that you make this practice part of your weekly routine!

Do you clean your makeup brushes regularly? How do you clean them? Sound off in the comments below!

6 Things You Need to Do Before a Career Fair

$
0
0

Chances are that your college’s career center hosts a career fair every semester. Haven’t been to one? This is the semester to start going!

A career fair is an event in which representatives form companies looking for new interns or employees gather in one place to present information about the companies and their opportunities (convenient for you, right?). Career fairs present you with the opportunity to see what these organizations are all about. You can attend and prove that you could be a great addition to their companies! What better way to put yourself out there? Check out six things you need to do before going to a career fair.

1. Research the Companies

It’s important to prepare for a career fair the same way you would prepare for an exam. You need to do a little bit of studying! Know which companies are going to be at the fair before you walk in, and make sure you have an idea of what they’re all about. Remember: you need to know how a particular company runs in order to decide if it’s beneficial for you to intern or work there.

Doing your research will definitely make you stand out from the other students. “When students take the time to research companies, they can demonstrate the knowledge of a company when approaching the recruiters at the fair,” says Alicia Rodriguez, director of employer relations at the University of Miami’s career center. “Imagine the difference when approaching an employer and impressing him or her based on what you know about the company, as opposed to asking, ‘What does your company do?’”

Start off by looking around the company’s site and reading its mission statement.  Then, search for the company on Google News to read about any recent happenings relating to the organization.

Researching companies beforehand gives you an edge because you’ll know exactly which opportunities will work for you, and you can impress potential employers with your knowledge.

2. Make a Map

Knowing which companies will be at the fair will also help you prioritize which prospects are most important to you. Check out your career center’s website to see if there is a list of the companies attending and a map of where their booths will be. It’s much easier to make an organized game plan that way, as one collegiette found.

“When I went to a career fair last semester, I made a list of companies I was most interested in,” says Christina, a senior majoring in psychology at Barnard College. “When I got there, I was given a map of the tables at the fair, so I marked the ones I wanted to go to before I went in. That way, I was able to make the most of my time at the career fair and get to all the companies I wanted to, and then I had time after to wander around and talk to other companies I was less interested in.”

You may be in college, but it’s never too late to use what Dora the Explorer taught you and bring along a trusty map!

3. Update Your Resume

Make sure you don’t walk into a career fair with an outdated resume that doesn’t show your current experience, education and accomplishments (meaning, no high school stuff!).

“An employer at a career fair has only a few seconds to glance at a resume,” says Darlene London Johnson, the senior associate director of Hofstra University’s career center. “Therefore, a clear and specific objective is helpful. As in any case, resumes should highlight a student's accomplishments and show the transferable skills gained from work, volunteer and community activities and extracurricular activities.  Be sure to include extras like technology skills, language fluencies and other things that can be seen as an added bonus.”

You want your resume to show all that you’ve achieved during your time at college as well as how prepared you are to take the next step and have an internship or job. Why else have you been running around campus like a madwoman, investing your time in tons of extracurricular activities and pulling all-nighters on the reg?

You never know how big of an impression an awesome resume will leave, so always be prepared by carrying plenty of copies with you.

“Putting down your email for them is okay, but my successful offer happened because the person there put a star on the physical copy I handed her,” says Megan, a junior majoring in news and editorial journalism and political science at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Awesome opportunities can arise because your resume leaves an amazing first impression, so take the time beforehand to work on it and make it stellar.

4. Pick Out a Great Outfit

Showing up to a career fair and standing in front of company representatives in a wrinkly, stained dress shirt and shoes you wore to your middle school graduation is a definite no-no. You need to dress the part of a professional (think of it as a shopping spree opportunity!).

“There is a saying: ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression,’” Johnson says. “That is entirely true regarding what a student chooses to wear to a [career] fair.  Dressing professionally lets an employer know that you know what it is like to be in a professional environment and that you really want to make that great first impression.  It shows the seriousness of your intent.  Dressing in a sloppy manner conveys an attitude of not caring, and that is not what an employer wants to see.”

You don’t have to wear a full-on Hillary-Clinton-style power suit, but looking classy and professional goes a long way in the eyes of employers. Try to dress the way you would for an interview. Make sure you try on your outfit in advance to avoid any last-minute panic when you realize your skirt’s zipper is broken or your top doesn’t look right with your pants 15 minutes before the career fair starts.

Don’t forget the details! If you think potential employers won’t notice the wrinkles in your shirt or that your nails have been destroyed by your lifelong nail-biting habit, think again!

“Students should pay attention to every detail, from shoes, makeup, hemline and nails,” Johnson says. “I had a recruiter tell me once that chipped nail polish was a big turnoff to her.”

5. Practice Your Networking Skills

Always be prepared for the number-one reason you’re at the career fair: to network! The entire point is to market yourself and make companies see why you would be their perfect intern or employee.

“Practice your elevator pitch!” Rodriguez says. “Imagine if you met your dream employer and you only had 30 seconds in an elevator ride with that person. How would you convey your brand in that short period of time? Make a great first impression by demonstrating passion for the industry you wish to pursue.”

If you need help with your elevator pitch, check out our tips for how to perfect it!

Half of networking is expressing professional mannerisms with whomever you meet at career fairs. And if you’re inexperienced in the basics, practice!

“A good handshake is the first step,” Johnson says. “Many students have never had to shake hands with someone and don't have a clue how. Practice shaking hands with people and ask for their feedback.” A strong handshake indicates confidence and power, so make sure you have a firm grip and you’re looking the representative in the eye.

In order to network effectively, confidence and friendliness is essential. This is your chance to win over potential bosses. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity!

6. Make Business Cards

Now that you know how to win over recruiters with your networking skills, know in advance how to make sure they remember your name.

Having a business card has a similar effect to having a LinkedIn account; it shows that you’ve taken the time to market yourself and are striving to be professional and fit into the working world. Likewise, taking the business card of a representative gives you a way to stay in contact and helps you follow up with him or her after the fair.

“Students should always take the business card from the company representative and write an email thanking that person for attending the fair with a copy of their resume attached for quick reference,” Johnson says.

Don’t have your own business cards? Read how to get your own here!

When the signs start popping up in the hallways about your college’s upcoming career fair, go! Study and prepare for the big day, because you never know what fabulous opportunities might be waiting for you.

Real Live College Guy Andy: 5 Valentine’s Day Dates I'd Actually Love To Go On

$
0
0

Ahh, Valentine’s Day, every hopeless romantic's favorite holiday. Well, err, then again, maybe not if you are single like yours truly.

In fact, and perhaps to some readers’ disbelief, I have never gone on a Valentine’s Day date. Of the few girlfriends/flings in my dating career none of them were in action on February 14.

But please don't feel sorry for me, think of the money I've saved on chocolate and flowers!

And speaking of those cliched Valentine’s items, I would suggest staying away from the old boring date ideas. Save dinner and a drive-in movie for another night. If it's Valentine’s Day, do something that you rarely or never get to do together. Without further ado, here are five creative dates that would surely win over any guy.

1. A ride in a horse-drawn carriage

Yeah I know it isn't super creative in the sense we've seen it in tons of romantic films, but how many people have actually gotten to do it? How many boyfriends out there have actually set it up for their girlfriend?

A horse-drawn carriage is only one of the most romantic outings ever. Cuddling up together in the warm seat while looking up at the stars and taking a ride around the park? Storybook!

2. Go out on the lake in a paddle boat

Again, it's been seen in the movies but how many of us have gotten a chance to go out on one of those pedal boats? It's a fun activity to share with your significant other and relax on a beautiful portion of open water. Heck, you can even make it a picnic out on the lake and bring some sandwiches. Depending on where you call home, you may want to make this a lunch date so you aren't too cold!

3. Outdoor skating

Okay, I may be biased on this one being a hockey player and all, but skating is awesome fun and incredibly romantic. That said, anyone can go to the local rink and skate, but to change things up, hopefully there is an outdoor rink from the holiday season still up and running. And for those in the far north, you can go out on a natural frozen pond! I would be so jealous because I have never gotten to skate on a real frozen body of water!

4. Hockey Game

Speaking of the fastest game in the world, it would only be the most awesome thing ever if I had a girlfriend take me to see my favorite hockey team! While it is a date that may not be overly creative (who hasn't thought about a sports venue date), having the girl treat the guy is a nice Sadie-Hawkins-esque change of pace!

You know your man will appreciate being taken to one of his favorite places on the planet! And it's V-Day! Maybe just maybe you will get on the "Kiss-cam"! How romantic!

5. Skiing/Log Cabin snuggle fest

For us college students, a day on the slopes may not be the easiest on our wallets but there is just something about the snow and romance. Take a day off of school and head up to the mountains for a nice day of exercise with your special someone. And when it's late afternoon and the skiing is winding down, nothing is better than returning to a good old-fashioned mountain cabin. Take off that ski, girl, get a nice (two person perhaps) shower in and then snuggle up by the fire and put on a movie? Priceless.

Real Live College Guy Dale: Why Doesn’t He Want to Have Sex?

$
0
0

I'm in a committed relationship with my boyfriend, but sometimes I feel like the guy! While I'm happy he doesn't pressure me into sex, he also isn't very interested in it. We've been dating a while and are very comfortable with each other. I don't want to pressure him either, but I'd like to understand. It makes me feel like he doesn't like how I look or something! Please help me understand this! – Sexless in Seattle

Seattle,

It’s a common misconception that the only thing on a man’s mind is sex. While it’s no secret that we definitely think about it, it isn’t the single most important thing to us. That being said, your situation kind of throws me for a loop.

No guy should pressure his girlfriend into having sex. If you don’t want to do it, he should respect that. And this works both ways – if he doesn’t want to have sex, then you shouldn’t force him into it either. But it seems like you’re only concerned because he doesn’t seem interested in doing the deed, and you want to understand why.

His disinterest could be due to a multitude of reasons. One theory, unfortunately, is that he might be cheating on you. This isn’t something any person wants to face, let alone accept. After building a relationship with someone, it can be hard to believe that your boyfriend would go behind your back. Maybe he feels like the relationship isn’t what it once was—the passion is dissipating and the romance is dwindling, and it’s possible that he’s finding other people to get these things from and is simply too cowardly to break things off with you.

Another possibility is that he’s gay. I’ll be honest, this was one of the first ideas that popped into my head, and it was only reaffirmed when my friend at Starbucks (who’s a gay man himself) jumped to this same conclusion. A guy who doesn’t jump at the opportunity to have sex? That’s fishy. Maybe he’s not ready to come out yet, maybe he’s afraid of what others might think or maybe he’s struggling with accepting the fact that he’s gay. Those are all possibilities, though they may not be strict probabilities.

A third possibility is that he’s just not that into sex. He may not be repulsed by the idea, but he also might not find it very appealing either. Don’t immediately think that it’s your fault though, because this doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you or find you attractive anymore; it could simply mean that he isn’t as into sex as a lot of guys.

Of course, there’s the chance that he’s self-conscious. It happens to guys, too. Are we big enough? Are we fit enough? Will my super pale legs turn her off? Men have body issues too!

But how do you deal with these situations? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: it all comes down to communication. You’ve got to communicate your feelings with him if you want to make any progress. I wouldn’t suggest just outright asking him if he’s gay, nor would I force him to admit to cheating. However, I do believe you should sit him down and have a serious conversation with him and tell him your concerns. Tell him that when you two are intimate, you don’t feel as though he’s interested in taking things any further, and ask him why.

You could also try injecting a little passion into the relationship. I know a lot of couples that scheduled sex like it was a job, and I think that takes away from the experience. I won’t tell you what to do, but see if you can’t entice him to step out of his shyness or disinterest. Find a way to make him interested, but don’t sacrifice his or your own comfort to do so.

Like I said earlier, not every guy is obsessed with sex. If you’re that concerned about the issue, I strongly suggest that you communicate your feelings with him. That’s the only way to clear the air and move past the issue.

Collegiette Eats: The Best Alternative to Ice Cream

$
0
0

Sick of eating cereal and ramen for lunch and dinner? Want to spend less money eating out and finally start cooking for yourself? Put down that frozen pizza, because HC’s Health Editor, Sammie Levin, is here to share her daily eats so you can get ideas for healthy, satisfying meals that are easy enough for any time-strapped collegiette to make. After you read Collegiette Eats, your taste buds, wallet and waistline will thank you.

Breakfast

Ice Cream

Much like the best alternative to pasta, I'm about to let you in on a healthy alternative to ice cream. No, not froyo - it's even healthier than that, and you can make it yourself using only one ingredient: a frozen banana. Take a moment to reread that to really let the magic sink in.

All you do is put a frozen banana in a blender or food processor until the consistency gets creamy, which only takes about 30 seconds. And that's it! The texture actually does resemble fro-yo and the flavor is so fresh and natural since it's just straight up banana. If you're feeling fancy, you can mix in other ingredients, like cocoa powder, chocolate chips or other frozen fruits.

Since it's just made from banana, you can finally fulfil your dream of having ice cream for breakfast without feeling like you're doing something that you probably shouldn't. I made some for breakfast yesterday and topped it with a scoop of almond butter. I also had a piece of toast on the side. Whether you eat it as dessert, a snack or breakfast, like I did, I promise you that you'll be amazed by how good and simple this treat is.

Lunch

I was out and about yesterday afternoon, so I stopped at Chipotle, aka heaven, for lunch. I got a vegetarian burrito bowl with brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, lettuce, salsa and a side of guac. YUM. Is there any dip better than guac? Seriously, tell me if there is, because I have yet to taste one that beats the creamy goodness that is guacamole. With the option to get a bowl or salad and customize your fix-ins, Chipotle is a great quick-serve place for a healthy, on-the-go lunch. If you're looking to keep it low-cal, nix the sour cream, cheese and tortilla. If you want guac (I'll judge you if you don't), ask for it on the side so that you can control your portion, since the employees tend to dump a dollop the size of your face onto your order.

Dinner

\

For dinner, I went out to Sadako, a Japanese restaurant on campus, with some friends. I got the house salad, which came with tomato, avocado and ginger dressing, and I added raw salmon and tuna on top. Ginger dressing is the bomb; I wish that Sadako sold it by the bottle because I would probably put it on just about anything (or eat it plain if no one was watching). I also got skewers of grilled shrimp and grilled scallops. The meal came with miso soup and we got edamame for the table, so by the end of the meal I was pretty stuffed. But I still had room for a piece of mochi ice cream, which is a little ball of ice cream coated in a chewy shell of Japanese rice cake. The texture is kind of weird, but I really like it. If you haven't had it before, try it the next time you get sushi.

Enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday! Can't say I'll be watching the game, but I'm looking forward to the commercials and all the foodstagrams of people's snack spreads. Go stick a banana in the freezer right now so you can make some banana ice cream (or "nice" cream as I've seen it called on food blogs) for a healthy way to wash down the chips and wings.

What to Wear: Super Bowl Sunday

$
0
0

If you’re a die-hard fan.

Like when your school plays the rival, Super Bowl Sunday is one of those times that you can go all out. Treat it like Halloween and realize that no amount of spirit is too much when it comes to your outfit. If you’re going to go for the fan look, the best way to pull it off is to commit!

Deck yourself out, head-to-toe, in your team’s colors and pair your outfit with your favorite player’s jersey. Since jerseys tend to be on the baggy side, keep the rest of the look fitted. A tight long-sleeved tee under your jersey is a great way to stay warm and cozy without looking like you’re smuggling something under all your layers.

Polar vortex chic?

Don’t stop at clothes, feel free to break out the face paint and (temporary) hair dye for some true team spirit!

If you’ve more or less chosen a team.

If you’ve chosen a team to root for, but think the Grammys beat the Super Bowl like Paris, France beats Paris, Texas, you’ll probably feel most at home in a more subtle look.

Pair your favorite jeans with a fitted jersey (the Nike store, among others, has started selling more flattering fitted cuts for women!) and accessorize with a scarf in your team colors!

Polar vortex chic strikes again.

If you’re just there for the commercials and the half time show.

Don’t feel bad. That’s definitely the category that I fall into – commercials and music are so much better than watching men hug for points.

Or whatever football is about.

Even if you don’t understand the game, the social aspect of Super Bowl parties (as well as the aforementioned commercials and half time show) can still make it worthwhile to go.

Since you might feel a little awkward trying to pull off a football jersey hyper-fan look when you’ve always thought that hawks were just a type of predatory bird, you can just go with athletic chic.

And guess what? As always, couture has your back!

As you can see in this runway look by Alexander Wang, sporty mainstays like track pants and pinneys and tees are back – but with a fun contrast edge that pushes them over from gym chick to chic.

To recreate the look with the runway price-point, match a pair of track pants in a bright color with a crisp white top. If you’re rocking white track paints, go for a black top or a really bright color!

No, the Kanye tee doesn’t count as a crisp white shirt – it needs to have some sort of a fashionable cut. My fave? Tees with the shoulders cut out. It’s a fun way to show some skin in a less expected place than the ever-popular crop top!

It’s comfortable, it’s cute, it’s vaguely athletic without any risk of someone asking you to explain a play to them.

How are you celebrating Super Bowl Sunday? More importantly, what will you wear?
