7 Celebrities Who Have Hidden Talents

$

Some people just aren't satisfied with achieving worldwide fame and success in their respective fields. Here are a few celebrities with additional areas of expertise you might not know about...

1. Emma Watson

As if a leading role in one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, a degree from a prestigious Ivy League university, and a place on TIME 100's list of Most Influential People weren't enough, the Harry Potter star is also an accomplished artist. Her house is filled with her original paintings and drawings. We're not sure how it's even possible for one person to accomplish so many things—we're wondering if there's a Time Turner involved?

2. Kristen Stewart

In an interview on Lopez Tonight in 2010, Twilight's leading lady got to show off her special (and unexpected) talent: juggling. She revealed that she once considered juggling onstage at the MTV Movie Awards, but decided against it for fear of tripping in her heels. It's been a few years, but we're sure K-Stew's still got it!

3. Neil Patrick Harris

In addition to being a singing-dancing-acting triple threat, NPH has a penchant for magic tricks—he's even a former president of Hollywood's world-famous Magic Castle. Harris has loved magic since childhood, and his onscreen personas on shows like How I Met Your Mother and Glee tend to share his affinity. He's also been known to do a few tricks in his guest appearances on talk shows such as Ellen DeGeneres.

4. Cara Delevingne

As if this model-turned-actress landing the lead role in Paper Towns wasn't surprising enough, it turns out Cara Delevingne has quite the singing voice as well. Earlier this year, she took the stage for her first live performance with Pharrell Williams to sing "CC The World," which the two recorded for a short film promoting Chanel's latest campaign. She can play the guitar and drums, too—is there anything this girl can't do?!

5. Colin Farrell

Before he found fame in the movie business, Colin Farrell made his living as a country line dancing instructor in Ireland. Though he gets embarrassed when asked about his dancing days, he's admitted that he made quite a bit of money teaching as a teenager—maybe this could be a new option to consider when you're looking for your next part-time job...

6. Amanda Seyfried

We all knew Amanda Seyfried could predict the weather with her boobs, but did you know she's also an avid knitter? She's described her hobby as therapeutic and often does it while on the elliptical or listening to audiobooks. She's even made hats as gifts for cast and crew members on the sets of her films.

7. Ryan Gosling

When he's not busy claiming his rightful place as one of Hollywood's most swoon-worthy heartthrobs, Ryan Gosling focuses on his musical pursuits. He even released a rock album a few years back as part of a duo called Dean Man's Bones, where he contributed vocals, piano, guitar and bass.

It's incredible how some of the world's most sought-after celebrities find the time to pursue so many different interests. Which of these hidden talents do you find most surprising?

Keeping Up with Your Extracurricular Activities After College

$

With graduation comes the thrill of never having to write another term paper or cram for final exams again. But that fateful day also seems to signal the end of your participation in the activities outside the classroom that you enjoyed for four years. Fortunately, getting your degree doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to kiss your favorite pastimes goodbye, because you can pursue so many of them in the real world. Here’s what to do if you…

played a sport but didn’t get recruited for the big leagues:

Don’t worry; you’re not permanently benched. Whether you started on a Division 1 team or stepped in as the Snitch for the annual Quidditch tournament, there are plenty of opportunities to stay active and find the team camaraderie you’re missing in the real world. To start, you can use your network of college friends to join in with their athletic after-work outings.

“I played Ultimate Frisbee with my current roommate in college. She graduated a few years before me and played for a while in the city, so she suggested a summer league to me,” says Emily Brower, a 2014 Union College graduate and a member of the Ultimate Frisbee team as a student. “It was low cost and low commitment and would help me meet some awesome people and introduce me to a greater community if I decided I wanted to play more seriously in the future. Being in a new city can be hard, but I've been able to meet some great people and establish some consistency (and get outside) by playing each week.”

If you belong to a gym, ask about group classes or team sport offerings, both of which are great ways to get to know new people and stay in shape. You may even discover a new sport that you love!

joined a sorority but weren’t chosen to stay on as House Mom:

Most workplaces don’t recognize “Wear Your Letters Wednesday” as a legitimate weekly holiday, so you’ll have to find other ways to share your sorority pride. Luckily, most Panhellenic sororities have alumnae chapters in major cities or schools, so you can easily connect with other graduated sisters in the area. Check out your sorority’s national website to find contact information for alumnae chapters near you.

“I got involved with the local alumnae chapter by participating in fundraisers and doing community service in the local area,” says Charlotte Lehman, a 2014 Union College graduate and sister of Gamma Phi Beta. “I also was able to help out during the local collegiate chapter's recruitment and make new friends of all ages!”

Sorority involvement in college can help you find community service opportunities after graduating, too. If you’re missing taking part in your chapter’s philanthropy events, go straight to the source: reach out to your sorority’s chosen philanthropic organization and ask how you can help out.

starred in every school production but have yet to win a Tony:

Your school’s alumni network can be particularly helpful here. You may not be ready or willing to move to New York and just hope that one of your auditions takes, but since theater straddles the line between academic discipline and extracurricular activity, you can likely search your college alumni database for former drama students and connect with them. Even if these alumni haven’t pursued acting as a career, they may have kept up with the craft through community theater, improv troupes or other performing arts venues that you can join as well.

wrote for the campus newspaper but didn’t get an offer from the New York Times:

You may not get the rush of seeing your name in print, but setting up your own blog allows you to pursue the passion for writing and editing you developed after so many late nights in the campus newsroom. Sites like WordPress are user-friendly and provide you with an outlet for your thoughts.

Chances are, you aren’t the only one missing having a group of people who share your love for the written word. As with any of these activities, it’s important to seek out a community of people who share your interests and pursue them together.

“I got involved in my local literary center, where I work a few hours each week in exchange for writing classes that have allowed me to explore media outside of reporting, where I also get the opportunity to critique and edit other writers’ work,” says Brower. “I also recently reunited with one of my co-editors from college, and we critique each other’s work once a week. It was hard for me to leave the community of writers and editors I worked with on the school paper, but it was important to me to find a similar outlet for my creativity after graduation.”

Additionally, a lot of established online publications (like Her Campus, for example!) will publish work by contributing or freelance writers. If there’s a site you visit frequently, reach out to the editors with your pitches.

led the campus Democrats or Republicans but aren’t eligible to run in 2016:

Is there a cause or issue you’re particularly passionate about? A politician whom you’d like to see run the world? Reach out. These people and organizations almost certainly have information on their websites about how you can volunteer your time. There is no limit to the ways in which you can get involved, even if you’re simply distributing campaign materials for a candidate you support. Your alumni database or former professors may be of help here, too, since you can easily look up if anyone from your college has gone on to work in government in some capacity. They’ll appreciate the help and connect you with a network of people who share your worldview.

Though it might be tempting to come home and binge watch the new season of Orange is the New Black after work every day, it’s important to remember that even though you have graduated, you can still push yourself to stay involved in the activities that fulfilled you as a collegiette. Doing so can help you acclimate to a new environment by introducing you to new people, keep your brain and body active and bring you the personal satisfaction that your entry-level job may not necessarily provide.

Alabama's Alpha Phi Seriously Lacks Diversity

$

These views reflect the opinion of the author.

Recently, the Alpha Phi sorority at the University of Alabama released their 2015 recruitment video. From that video alone, I would not be convinced to even think about joining that sorority.

The video featured what A. L. Bailey, of AL.com, called “racially and aesthetically homogenous” girls clad in matching clothing and bikinis dancing around, blowing glitter and otherwise living up to any other typical stereotype of a large sorority house at a Southern school.

Don’t get me wrong—there isn’t anything wrong with girls wearing bikinis in an online video or embracing their femininity. The issue lies in the general similarities between every girl in that video. The video does not feature anything other than white members of the sorority, most of them with matching beach blonde hair, matching skinny body types and similar faces.

That is not the reality of college, or sorority, life. Universities are filled with diversity, as are their respective Greek life organizations. According to the University of Alabama’s website, approximately 12 percent of their student population is of African American heritage, and 3 percent of the community is Hispanic. While sororities are meant for making lasting relationships with a diverse group of women, Alpha Phi only featured homogenous-looking women, which does not advertise anything positive to me.

According to USA TODAY, Griffin Meyer, the UA student filmmaker that shot the video, claimed that the shoot was, "not very organized and there was a lot of improvisation that led to shots with similar looking girls.” In addition, Meyer added, “There is no drinking, no drugs, no nudity. It’s kind of sad girls can’t play fake football or be in a bikini without the judgement of the entire Internet.”

The second part of Meyer’s statement has its merits. The women of Alpha Phi weren’t obscene or inappropriate in the recruitment video. They should be able to embrace a feminine point of view if they want to without people feeling a need to pass an unfair judgment. However, “improvisation” is no excuse for a lack of diversity in a publicized and well-circulated video.

Alabama is about 30 percent African American, 2 percent Asian, and 4 percent Hispanic. This video, stemming from the state’s flagship university, did not reflect Alabama’s true demographics as it should have. Alpha Phi could have and should have included far more diversity in their recruitment video. The video advertises an unreal reality where all of the girls in a sorority act and look exactly alike, which is a dangerous and false advertisement for Alpha Phi.

There is Going to Be a 'Toy Story 4' & We Have the Details

All our dreams are coming true, because Toy Story 4 is in the making. At the recent D23 Expo, Disney's John Lasseter confirmed that a fourth installment in the beloved Toy Story series is on its way. While we're not sure that Toy Story 3 can be topped, Lasseter assured audiences that the new animated film will go in a different direction. Set to be released on June 16, 2017, Toy Story 4 will focus on Woody and Bo Peep's relationship.

"It’s a love story with Woody and—and this is news—Bo Peep… At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule," Lasseter promised.

We always wondered why Bo Peep wasn't in Toy Story 3, and we're excited for her return. She and Woody are basically meant to be, so this is one relationship we can get behind. Now it's time to re-watch the first three movies in preparation for when the fourth film hits theaters!

In your carry-on bag

  • American cell phone and charger (in case you need to contact someone while you’re still in the U.S.)
  • Boarding pass(es)
  • Cash (bring American dollars and the currency of your host location or money you can exchange for it—enough to use in case of an emergency, but not more money than you can afford to lose)
  • Copy of birth certificate
  • Copy of Social Security card
  • Credit card (notify your bank that you’ll be abroad before you leave to avoid your account being frozen)
  • Debit card
  • Deodorant

  • Student visa
  • Travel itinerary
  • Travel pillow
  • Travel tickets (if you’re taking a train or other transport after your plane lands)

Supplies

Tip: Because of the voltage differences in many electronic products, you may want to wait until you’re in your host country to buy items such as a blow dryer or hair straightener—plugging an American hair dryer into an outlet converter could overheat and break it.

  • Bobby pins
  • Comb
  • Contacts, solution and case (again, make sure you have all the contacts you'll need for your time abroad)
  • Glasses and glasses case
  • Hair ties
  • Hairbrush

  • Portable stain remover pen
  • Travel sheet (for hostels)

Clothing

Tip: Mixing and matching outfits and layering saves a ton of space in your suitcase! Make sure you check the predicted weather of the country you’re traveling to so you can dress appropriately. Don’t bring anything you’d be devastated to see ruined!

You Need to Listen to President Obama's Spotify Playlist

$

The hottest Spotify playlist ever made is officially here, and belongs to our very own commander in chief. Yes, you heard correctly: POTUS has a playlist.

Just last week, the White House tweeted out two distinct playlists that President Obama created for his summer vacation. From a president that we've seen like this:

we could expect nothing less than absolute greatness - and we weren't disappointed! The two playlists, entitled "Day" and "Night," are brimming with danceable hits both old and new. It's got everything from Queen B (a must have for any classy president) to the Rolling Stones.

The more chill "Night" playlist takes the energy down a notch, with mellow ballads from The Lumineers, Mary J. Blige and even Frank Sinatra (his Chicago pride is showing!).

President Obama has been known to be many things, but "stuffy archaic politician" was never one of them. We can practically see him wiggling his mom-jean-clad butt to Florence + The Machine, or slow dancing with a daughter to Van Morrison's "Moondance." He's as down-to-earth as they come for a president, and that's what we love most about him (politics aside).

If you want to check out his summer reading list, you can see that here. We've basically just given you all you need for back-to-college trip entertainment - you're welcome!

10 Simple Tips for Staying Healthy in College

$
0
0

Staying healthy in college is no easy feat. When your cheapest option is often chowing down on free pizza at informational club meetings, and you’re constantly running between classes and extracurriculars (when you’re not going out with friends, of course), it’s easy to watch your fitness goals fall by the wayside. No wonder the Freshman 15 terrifies so many incoming collegiettes!

We asked Joy Bauer—registered dietician, Health Expert for The TODAY Show, and founder of the new snack brand, Nourish Snacks—for suggestions when it comes to making healthy, nutritious choices in a college environment. From how to avoid binge-eating when you're pulling an all-nighter to what you should eat when you get back from a night out, Joy offers some awesome (and realistic!) tips for staying healthy in college.

Meet Joy Bauer, health expert extraordinaire.

Her Campus: What should you eat in the morning if you have no time for breakfast before running to class?

Joy Bauer: Microwavable oatmeal is a great option, and you can boost the flavor (and nutritional value) by topping it with sliced banana, dried fruit, or chopped nuts and seeds—all nonperishable and perfect for dorm-room storage. If you’re a peanut butter (or almond butter) fan, spread some on an apple, a banana, or a few rice cakes, and take ‘em to go.  If you have a mini-fridge in your room, pack it with Greek yogurts and tote one along with a piece of fruit or Nourish Snacks bag to class.

HC: How can you avoid binge-eating when you're pulling an all-nighter?

JB: Plan ahead for success! Munch on some of the following items while studying and you’ll stay focused, energized and motivated.

  • Veggies with low-cal dip, like salsa, hot sauce, or light salad dressing—or 1/4 cup of hummus or guacamole, for extra staying-awake power. Choose from a laundry list of high-volume filling produce: cucumber slices, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, celery sticks, sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower…You get it.
  • Light popcorn is a perfect high volume, low calorie snack that comes packed with filling fiber. Each cup provides just 30 calories.
  • Grapes, fresh or frozen. They’re sweet, non-messy, and only about 100 calories per cup. (That’s half the calories in a cup of chips, or 1/4 the amount in a cup of gummy candy). As an added bonus, purple grapes contain anthocyanins, an antioxidant that can boost your brainpower.
  • Nourish Snacks. While all of the snacks are winners, Mocha-mazing (cocoa-dusted almonds mixed with mocha-flavored granola), Monkey Love (chocolate-banana granola bites) and Miss Popular (half-popped corn kernels mixed with dark chocolate morsels) provide the added bonus of dark chocolate, which has been connected with enhanced brain function.
  • Lollipops. As a nutritionist, I don’t often advocate for candy eating (!), but lollis are less than 100 calories each and will occupy your taste buds for a while.
  • Gum. A shot of flavor and a whole lot of chewing is often the perfect remedy for stress reduction during intense study sessions.
  • Hot, caffeinated beverages (like coffee and green or black tea) provide a boost of caffeine to keep you raring to go. Just go easy on the cream and sugar.

HC: How can you keep yourself in check in the dining hall this year if you gained a lot of weight last year?

JB: Before hitting the buffet line, set a few ground rules to help keep you on track:

  • Avoid all fried foods, including chicken, French fries, onion rings, fish sticks. Anything that’s been breaded and dunked in a vat of oil is calorific and will leave you bloated and sluggish. Go for grilled, broiled, poached, steamed, or baked instead.
  • Go heavy on the veggies. Dive into the impressive dining hall salad bars, which offer a huge variety of creative, tasty toppings. If salads aren’t your thing, dish up some of the roasted veggies at the hot entrées bar.
  • Minimize starch servings, including pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes. Starches are more calorie-dense than other foods and they’re easy to overeat. If you can’t resist, cap your serving at just one scoop (or one slice of bread) per meal.
  • Nix soda. Need I say more?
  • End on a sweet note. Stick to fresh fruit as often as possible, and when a dessert craving is too tempting to resist, limit yourself to half a serving.  Or try this trick:  Fill an ice cream cup with fresh fruit and top it with frozen yogurt (rather than the other way around) to boost the nutrient quotient and save calories.

HC: What are the best things to eat when you need a lot of energy and concentration for studying?

JB: Studies show that protein directly stimulates brain cells to help with long-lasting concentration, so make sure the meal that precedes your study session comes packed with at least one protein-rich option like chicken, turkey, lean meat, fish, shrimp, tofu, black beans, lentils, chickpeas, eggs, or Greek yogurt.

Also, if you have access to a blender, definitely try my Smart Smoothie. It comes packed with brain-boosting ingredients and tastes delicious.

HC: If you are going out drinking, what are the healthiest drinks that you can order?

JB: You’re always safe with a glass of wine or champagne (120 calories each), a light beer (about 100 calories), or a shot of liquor with seltzer and a splash of fruit juice, like cranberry or grapefruit (about 100 calories).

HC: What is the best snack to have when you get back from a night out and just want to order a pizza?

JB: Make your own low-cal, health-ified pizza using this simple recipe. Just 170 calories for the entire pie and takes only 5 minutes to whip together—nice deal!

Don’t have a kitchen? Buy a big bag of light popcorn and share it with friends.

Also, keep a stash of my Nourish Snacks on hand—they’re delicious and portion-controlled so you can dig in without any guilt or regret. A few post-partying favorites include Chili’n in the Corn’r (crunchy citrus-chili roasted corn), Mr. Popular (half-popped corn kernels dusted with sea salt), Hot & Popular (spicy peanuts & half-popped corn kernels), and Coco’nilla Crunch (crunchy coconut-vanilla granola bites).

HC: What are some healthy lunches and snacks that you can easily pack to eat during busy days when you don't have time to stop in the dining hall?

JB: Stash convenient, energizing snacks in your backpack at all times so when you don’t have time for lunch, you’re prepared to tame a growling stomach. Try:

  • No-fuss portable fruit (apples, oranges, peaches, plums, bananas)
  • Peanut butter & jelly sandwich on whole grain bread
  • Nuts & seeds
  • Nutrition bars (no more than 200 calories or 12 grams sugar)

Two Female Soldiers Are Graduating from Army Ranger School & It's a Big Deal

Two female soldiers are making history as the first women ever to graduate from the elite Army Ranger School. Captain Kristen Griest, age 26, and First Lieutenant Shaye Haver, age 25, were the only women out of 19 female participants to make it all the way through the Army's most intensive training course. This was the first attempt at integrating the genders for the difficult class. The two women were both trained at The United States Military Academy at West Point, which has a 9 percent acceptance rate.

While it is important to recognize that these women (understandably!) do not want to be treated any differently from their male counterparts, it's also necessary that we address this news. Their graduation (along with 94 men) from Ranger School is a huge deal, because the United States military is moving towards allowing women into direct combat roles.

According to a New York Times article, the Army (along with the other branches of the Armed Forces) has to make a decision by January 1 on "whether to seek exemptions from a 2013 order ending the formal ban on women in combat." Letting women go to Ranger School was a big factor in helping the Army reach its decision on this matter. As the New York Times emphasizes, "By year’s end, the services must identify jobs they want to continue to restrict to men and provide a rationale for doing so, but any exemption would have to be approved by the defense secretary."

We're so happy for these women and we are impressed by their amazing accomplishments. We know we'll be seeing more great things from them in the very near future!

Cara Delevingne is No Longer a Model

After modeling mogul, brow-tastic phenom and social media funny-girl Cara Delevingne dropped her contract with Storm Models in July, the rumors began to circulate that she had quit modeling for good. The "Paper Towns" star recently confirmed to London's The Times that her modeling days are officially over. The reasons she gives are just plain sad.

Delevingne reported that she suffered from anxiety and body-shaming from her years of modeling and reminisces about the "disgusting" poses she was obligated to perform in her early career.

"Modeling just made me feel a bit hollow after a while," Delevingne said in an interview. "It didn't make me grow at all as a human being. And I kind of forgot how young I was...I felt so old."

The 23-year-old has been in the modeling industry for about 12 years and knows just how cruel it can be.

"I was, like, fight and flight for months. Just constantly on edge," Delevingne added. "It is a mental thing as well because if you hate yourself and your body and the way you look, it just gets worse and worse."

The mental stress took its toll on the young starlet, who developed psoriasis, a chronic and visible skin condition that can look like a scaly rash, as a result.

Delevingne sheds light on a highly-criticized industry, showing that being in front of the camera isn't all it's made out to be.

"I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick. It's horrible and it's disgusting...[These are] young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to...not great stuff."

A Play-by-Play of Move-in Day Freshman Year

Ah, move-in day: A college student's first taste of the real world. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never feel so free. Enjoy this emotional roller-coaster ride while it lasts, because it'll be over faster than your RA can say, "No alcohol in the dorm rooms!"

It’s move-in day, which means you’re about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!

You couldn’t sleep last night, so you're just like,

It's a mixture of completely exhausted but also so excited that you just need a minute.

You parents are staring at your stuff like,

No one said fitting this into the car was going to be easy.

In fact, your car looks like this:

You pull up to your new dorm, excited to get your stuff moved in.

There are people all over the place. You try to play it cool and make your way through the crowd like,

But on the inside you're like,

You wonder how much the inventor of the futon makes. Probably like a million bucks per second judging by how many of those suckers you’ve seen in the past five minutes.

Oh, there’s no elevator in this dorm? Cool.

You never realize how hard moving is until you have to do it without an elevator.

And no air conditioning. Alright.

You finally meet your roommate in person.

And your RA, who will probably tell you to leave your door open so you can meet new people.

This will sound crazy, but really, leave the door open.

You inevitably realize you forgot something.

That something was your comforter.

Not to worry - nothing a trip to Target won’t fix!

You get to Target and it looks like every single freshman also forgot everything they own.

BUY ALL THE DORM ACCESSORIES!

"But Mom, I need this beanbag chair for when all of my cool new friends come to sit in my cool new dorm room!"

You’re about to squeeze every last cent out of your emotional parents.

Protip: This is the best time to get things because your parents probably feel a little guilty about leaving you.

Inevitably, you have a minor breakdown.

But it will pass.

Then, suddenly, everything is unpacked.

Your mom is like...

And you try to keep your cool as your parents drive away,

But you're really thinking, "Did I just make a huge mistake?"

But then you remember that you can do whatever you want now. You're an independent lady!

So, while moving is never really fun, it will only get easier. Enjoy it!

Happy moving!

The 15 Best Feminist Characters on TV

$

One of our favorite things about TV shows is that we get fabulous female characters to make gifs of, quote and aspire to be in every way. They range from funny to deadly serious and from shy to boldly outspoken - and we love them all the same. Beware, because by the end of this list, you're going to want to go re-watch every season of every show that these women are a part of...

1. Leslie Knope (Parks & Recreation)

Ovaries before brovaries, uteruses before duderuses...and waffles.

2. Claire Underwood (House of Cards)

The Ice Queen of TV is the definition of a strong female character. Oh, and she has an INCREDIBLE wardrobe.

3. Mindy Lahiri (The Mindy Project

Dr. Lahiri's feminist values and stellar sense of humor make us all wish we could work under her.

4. Rachel Green (Friends)

Rachel was a feminist before it was cool, which makes us love her even more.

5. Olivia Pope (Scandal)

No explanation needed. None whatsoever.

6. Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy)

This particular masterpiece of a Shonda Rhimes character is famous for proving that women can be bossy and NOT be labeled with the other b-word.

7. Jessica Day (New Girl)

Jess has baby farm animals on her checks and is also a hardcore feminist. So HA.

8. Temperance Brennan (Bones)

One of the many reasons we love Brennan: She's completely ignorant to any idea that she wouldn't be equal to her male counterparts. We guess you could say feminism is in her Bones.

9. Piper Chapman (Orange is the New Black)

While almost all of the women from OITNB could have easily made this list, we love how Piper is never afraid to call out her superiors on their unending sexism and misogyny.

10. Olivia Benson (Law and Order: SVU)

Olivia spends her time kicking ass and taking names, and we only wish we could be half as strong as her as the episodes go on.

11. Cristina Yang (Grey's Anatomy)

We couldn't leave another of Shonda's leading ladies off of this list, especially seeing how we always loved Cristina for making academic success - above all - seem cool.

12. Jessa Johansson (Girls)

Not only does Jessa have a free spirit and a super body-positive attitude - but she tries to always encourage others to love themselves just as much.

13. Amy Fowler (The Big Bang Theory)

Amy's wit and brilliance makes her commentary on just about everything seem so much better.

14. Liz Lemon (30 Rock)

Tina Fey's genius character introduced a lot of people to feminism - and for that, we will be forever grateful.

15. Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)

Mother. Of. Dragons.

4 Reasons Why Amandla Stenberg is The Ultimate Role Model

At just 16 years old, Amandla Stenberg is proving that she is the perfect role model for young girls. While most people recognize her as Rue from The Hunger Games, the rising star is proving that her abilities aren't limited to acting. Named after the Zulu word for "power," Amandla is certainly living up to the title! Here are a few reasons why we think she's the ULTIMATE role model:

1. She's not afraid to speak her mind, even if it means facing backlash and criticism. As a person who is in the public eye, Amandla is refreshingly honest and bold in voicing her opinion on controversial issues. "If I’m receiving hate about something it must mean that I’m saying something that’s important," she says.

2. She utilizes social media as a tool for social justice and awareness. If you browse through Amandla's various social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr), you'll notice that she frequently posts her opinion of current events, weighing in on a variety of subjects including police brutality, race issues and animal cruelty. A few months ago, she uploaded a school project on tumblr titled, "Don't Cash Crop My Cornrows." Shedding light on the topic of racial appropriation, her video quickly went viral.

3. She is an advocate for encouraging girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Last weekend, Amandla participated as a celebrity co-host for ComEd's Icebox Derby Race Day. Comprised of 30 teens and 6 recycled refrigerators, the competition aimed to motivate girls and help them realize their true potential in STEM fields. "So excited to be here cheering on the girls at #TheIceboxDerby! Go teams!" Amandla tweeted.

4. Despite balancing numerous projects, Amandla is focused on pursuing her education. In a recent interview with the Huffington Post, Amandla revealed her plans to hopefully study film and psychology at NYU. "I want to make projects that empower, specifically, young black girls," she says. We personally find it hard to balance our school lives and our social lives. Kudos to Amandla's determination to excel in both realms!

With the dozens of lotions and potions we accumulate, it’s safe to say we collegiettes can be a tad addicted to expanding our ever-growing beauty collections. Seriously, we’re all probably one lipstick and two moisturizers away from opening our own Sephora! From makeup to skincare to fragrance, there’s plenty of products taking up our precious—and devastatingly limited—counter space.

But if it's practically revenge of the beauty stash with the amount of clutter you have accumulating, it’s probably time to reclaim your countertops and drawers and whip things in shape! Luckily, there are so many cute, genius and inexpensive solutions to organizing and storing beauty products that any organizational journey will be well-rewarded. So when the clutter is just too much to bear and the urge to DIY is too strong to fight, these eight beauty organization hacks will save the day!

1. Use a wine rack for more than just wine

This hack may have you itching to purchase more wine, but you’ll have to hold off! Who says we can’t store a bottle of Pinot and a bottle of shampoo using the same rack? A unit like the Houdini Deluxe Folding Wine Rack ($12.99 at Target) is a budget- and dorm-friendly solution for storing your bottles of shampoo, hairspray, lotions and more. This unit collapses, making it easy to hide and tuck away in your room when you want to give your rack a break. And it doesn’t stop there! No need to fret if you need to hold more than the four bottles this rack will allow. Clip multiple Houdini racks together to hold as many products as your heart desires!

2. Re-purpose a hanging shoe rack for makeup storage

Just as hanging shoe racks save you space by getting your heels off of your closet floor, they can get your dozens of products off of your counters. The Closetware Over-the-Door 24-Pocket Shoe Organizer ($9.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond) will not only add a pop of color to your bathroom, but will make it easy to locate your makeup thanks to its clear pockets. These large pouches will even fit bottles of hair and skincare products too!

3. Get a magnetic board and magnetize your makeup

There’s no denying the love connection between you and your makeup stash! Let the attraction get even more magnetic by DIYing a magnet makeup board. You’ve seen this storage hack many times before, so it’s about time you try it yourself! This project can be as simple or extravagant as you wish. Add an edgy frame to your magnet board to hang onto your bathroom wall for a chic touch, and consider adding magnets to small buckets to hold your makeup brushes on your board too. Make it small to hold the daily essentials or large to fit your entire stash—the possibilities are endless. Now, get to DIYing!

4. Use a cookie jar for your nail candy

The kitchen doesn’t have to be the only room that gets in on some sweet action. Store your nail polish collection (we know every collegiette has one!) in your bathroom using a cookie jar. A large, glass jar like the Anchor Hocking 1-Gallon Cookie Jar ($9.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond) will allow you to put a large, colorful collection on display for all to admire. It may not be cookies hiding in there, but your sweet tooth will be dying to try on some nail candy every time you pass this jar!

5. Turn mini loaf pans into organizers

There probably won’t be much baking going on when you’re lining the insides of your drawers with mini loaf pans. Instead, use these babies ($4.49 at Target) for the ultimate makeup storage solution. Organizing your lipsticks, mascaras and small makeup products has never been easier!

6. Transform glassware into a makeup stand

If this hack doesn’t scream class then we don’t know what does! Combine plates and a candlestick for a DIY makeup stand. Whether you want to store your makeup or lotions and perfumes, this stand is the perfect, elegant solution! Prepare to amaze your friends and family with your savvy and chic DIY skills.

7. Heat up your beauty storage with a spice rack

Wouldn’t it shed a couple of minutes off of your morning routine if you could quickly locate your favorite moisturizer without digging through a pile of creams and sprays? Use a tiered, revolving spice rack ($29.95 at Williams-Sonoma) to get your routine down to a science! It’ll keep your beauty essentials neatly in their place while bringing a little life to your morning routine when you start seeing how fast you can spin it without knocking anything off (we know you’ll be guilty of doing this at least twice!).

8. Hanging organizers just got even cuter

When you’re ready to step up to the DIY big leagues, try this project on for size! With a few cutlery caddies and a clothesline, you can have an adorable hanging organizer for the beauty supplies you love most. It’s perfect for your shampoos and conditioners, makeup brushes and even your hot hair tools. If your candlestick makeup stand didn’t wow the crowd, this hanging system certainly will!

With amazing storage solutions like these, there’s no reason why we should ever have a “clean up on aisle three” moment on our bathroom counters ever again! Our coveted beauty stashes will forever be kept in order—and with these hacks, we mean that in the most adorable, clutter-free way possible!

As August 20 marks the 26th anniversary of Saved By The Bell, we couldn't help but think back on the good old days of the Bayside High gang on the '90s hit TV show. Between the cute boys and memorable fashion moments, there sure was a lot to reminisce about! Here's a peek at some of our favorite looks from the sitcom.

1. Zack's amazing oversized boyfriend tee—which we'd totally wear to bed.

2. That time Jessie looked like Barbie. You rock that lace, girl!

3. The Mr. Rogers-esque sweater that Zack actually nailed when he layered it over a button-up shirt. Preppy perfection!

4. The moment when Kelly totally predicted the matching crop-top-and-bottoms trend.

5. When Slater wore a flamingo-colored button down because only real men wear pink. Extra points for the mullet.

6. That time Zack wore a sweater that looked like a Mondrian painting.

7. Lisa's multicolored herringbone blazer and hat get-up.

8. When Kelly, Lisa and Jessie dressed up in '50s cheerleader uniforms.

9. When Lisa wore a funky purple leotard... or really anytime anyone wore '90s workout clothing.

10. That time Zack wore a Native American-inspired shirt, tucked into his jeans. Oh the '90s...

11. Kelly's peachy tee and matching skirt. Totally screams American Apparel!

We spy more than a few outfits we'd still wear today... can you guess which ones?

Fall is just around the corner and not only is there a new flavor of M&M's to get you into the fall holiday spirit, but now Starbucks is adjusting one of their most popular items, the Pumpkin Spice Latte!

Jezebel reports that the Pumpkin Spice Latte will now include actual pumpkin and be rid of artificial caramel coloring and flavoring, according to a blog post by Peter Dukes, Starbucks's Director of Espresso and Brewed Coffee Americas. Why this change? “After hearing from customers and partners about ingredients, we took another look at this beverage and why we created it so many years ago,” he explains. “It was simple - espresso, perfectly steamed milk, warm fall spices with delicious flavor of pumpkin pie that reminds you of the cool, crisp days of autumn.”

Dukes also gives the full ingredient list for the Pumpkin Spice Latte:

• Espresso

• Milk

• Pumpkin Spice Flavored Sauce (Sugar, Condensed Skim Milk, Pumpkin Puree, Contains 2% or Less of Fruit and Vegetable Juice for Color, Natural Flavors, Annatto (Color), Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Salt)

• Whipped Cream (Light Whipping Cream [Cream, Mono and Diglycerides, Carrageenan])

• Starbucks Vanilla Syrup (Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Citric Acid) • Pumpkin Spice Topping (Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Clove)

This change for healthier ingredients in foods is part of a pack of other restaurants and food companies that have decided to eradicate artificiality from their menu items. With this transformation of the pumpkin spice latte, there may be more people waiting in line for food and coffee than waiting for class!

The 7 Trends You Need to Rock This Fall

With a new school year on the horizon, fall is definitely the most exciting season to shop for. After all, there’s no better time to try out a new look! To help you get started, we’ve talked to stylists, monitored the runways and put together a list of the 7 biggest fashion trends for this fall season. Get ready to walk to class in style!

1. White blouses

If you’re going to add anything to your fall wardrobe, make it a classic white blouse, like this one from Choies ($23.99). This dynamic piece is perfect for a business casual job interview, a date night downtown or just another day in class. This season, give the standard button-up a total upgrade—opt for a top with dynamic details, like a floaty, loose peplum.

2. Menswear-inspired

The powersuit is cooler than ever! Whether you have a job interview to head to or just want to look smart for class, you'll definitely need a button-down shirt, pencil skirt, pantsuit or blazer (like this one from Forever 21, $27.90), as part of your wardrobe this fall. “This menswear-inspired look is all over the runways,” reveals Colin Megaro, Founder and Stylist of Megaro LLC in New York City and Los Angeles. So step up your fashion game with these chic staples!

3. Floor-duster coats

If you’re looking to make a statement as the weather gets colder, look no further than a floor-duster coat ($81 at ASOS). “It’s important to remember that the coats should not actually touch the ground,” says Megaro; so pairing them with a pair of heeled boots is the best way to go. Although many coats of this style are on the pricier side, they're a great investment for the winter season!

4. Neo-Victorian

We’re throwing it back WAY farther than just a few decades this fall with these 19th century-inspired pieces. “Think high-collared ruffled blouses, floor-sweeping beaded dresses, and beautiful lace accents,” Megaro says. We love this dusty pink blouse ($29 at H&M) for a subtle neo-Victorian touch.

5. Statement bling

Looking to spice up an everyday outfit this fall? You’re in luck, because bling is back! Sparkly statement rings like this one from Forever 21 ($3.99) and earrings like this Kate Spade pair ($48) are the perfect way to dress up any look.

6. Full-on monochrome

Who says wearing all of the same color has to be boring? Monochrome outfits in shades of black and gray are one of the easiest ways to make a statement this fall. Start your monochromatic collection with a go-to pair of black jeans ($69.95 at Gap).

7. Chunky knitwear

As the fall temperatures set in, cozy up with chunky knitwear pieces like sweaters and scarves. This cardigan from Forever 21 ($27.90) is a great option—it's incredibly layerable, which is always in for fall!

Whether you’re dressing up for a night out or just heading to class, there are countless new ways to be fashion forward this fall. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and go for one of these statement pieces. After all, new (school) year, new you!
