Why Nick Didn't Deserve What Happened on 'The Bachelorette' Finale

$

We’re the first to admit we’re not the biggest fans of Nick Viall, and we don’t think we’re alone. But last night’s finale of The Bachelorette had us sympathizing with Nick for the first time as Kaitlyn rejected his proposal.

Now we’ve seen some pretty cringeworthy moments in Bachelorette history—Nick calling Andi out on After the Final Rose for having sex with him, anyone?—but we could feel the devastation through our TVs with this one. As Nick made clear, Kaitlyn’s willingness to let him propose (though technically he didn’t make it to the portion of his speech where he dropped to one knee) was misleading and stole from him a moment he only wanted to experience once.

So if Kaitlyn knew she was going to dump Nick ahead of their awkward poolside confrontation, she should have done the honorable thing and let him know before he got all spiffed up and came back to the mansion that will surely haunt his nightmares for the rest of his life. That’s what Andi did, and while it didn’t exactly end much better for her, at the very least it didn’t taint her proposal from Josh and anger Nick even further. The fact that this was the second time Nick would be sent home as the humiliated runner-up made this a battle that Kaitlyn was never going to win, though. And we certainly wouldn’t have wanted her to settle for Nick if her heart belonged to Shawn, would we?

We hate to place any of the blame on Kaitlyn because we have a feeling it was more a producer-driven decision than Kaitlyn wanting to have one of the most uncomfortable conversations ever shortly before her actual future fiancé proposed to her. But we wish that the show would rid itself of this tired, unnecessary formula. Sure, it’s fun to guess who’s going to step out of the first limo… right up until you realize the heartbreak that will soon follow. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re confident the show could find a better way to handle this situation.

And as for Nick, we think he has two options. Either run far from this show to find love if he's really serious about settling down. Or take a swing at being the Bachelor so he realizes that it’s not as easy as it seems.

How should Kaitlyn have handled her breakup with Nick, collegiettes?

Having a Lot of Friends Can Help You Live Longer

Call up your gal pals because having a lot of friends comes with benefits! We all know that having a strong support system makes us happier in general, but according to new research, those same friends can actually help us live longer.

University of Rochester researchers, lead by Cheryl Carmichael, conducted a longitudinal study over 30 years to observe how social relationships affect well-being. Carmichael concluded that those with poor or few friendships increased their risk for early mortality. "Having few social connections is equivalent to tobacco use,” Carmichael said. "And it's higher than for those who drink excessive amounts of alcohol, or who suffer from obesity."

Beyond that, the researchers found that frequent social interactions at age 20 help form our identities, while fewer, high-quality relationships at age 30 can result in better wellness. Regardless, it’s always good to have super supportive friends, no matter what age you are!

So really, there’s no downside to meeting a lot of new people and creating long-lasting friendships. You should probably thank your besties for helping you live longer ASAP.

Back-to-school season is nearly underway, which means we know you're in the midst of preparation. But you've been so focused on preparing packing lists and gathering dorm room must-haves that you've completely forgotten about the most important part of move-in day—your outfit! Never fear, collegiettes! As always, we're here to help. Blending comfort, convenience and style effortlessly, these five outfits are guaranteed to establish you as style icon right from the start of the semesterand make the dreaded unpacking period fly by a whole lot quicker and easier.

1. Stay cool in a classic tee and shorts

Move In Day #1

Black top

ALDO black sandals
aldoshoes.com

Lauren Merkin crossbody purse
$195 - shopbop.com

When you're dressing for a day of high activity, nothing beats a tee and some jean cut-offs. Both are incredibly durable and comfortable, which is perfect for lifting, moving and rearranging. The look will also keep you cool in that sweltering, un-airconditioned space you'll be calling home for the next few months! Make sure you bring along a crossbody bag to carry all of your essentials (think keys, IDs and a phone) hands-free, leaving you ready to unload the car with lightening speed. And instead of flip-flops, we recommend chunky sandals—they're way less likely to slip off and cause an embarrassing moving-day fall!

2. Radiate in a romper

Move In Day #2

The epitome of chic comfort, rompers are the ideal alternative to a pretty dress for all you girls dying to maintain a lovely look on move-in day. Our go-to summer skater skirt poses the risk of an unintended undie flash, and the slippery straps of our sundresses would be way too aggravating to constantly adjust when we've got to get down to business. Rompers, on the other hand, are effortless and easy, without sacrificing a polished style—talk about the perfect substitute! And with an abundance of options, there's a playsuit out there for anybody. No matter what look you choose, some glittery sandals or girly slip-ons will complete your ensemble in a pinch. Bring along a backpack to help carry items up to your room, or slip a cardholder on your newly issued lanyard so you can easily swipe-in to your building on all of those trips back and forth from the car.

3. Opt for jeans in cooler weather

Move In Day #3

Joining or reuniting with a chillier campus? Jeans and Chelsea boots are a no-brainer. Boots are made for action, as are jeans. Even better, a distressed pair will cover up any move-in mishaps, like an accidental rip from some box-lifting squats (whoops). Grab a clip-on cardholder for any necessary school IDs, which you can conveniently and accessibly attach to one of your jeans' belt loops.

4. Come across as a classy collegiette from the get-go!

Move In Day #4

J Crew peplum tank
$115 - jcrew.com

MANGO high waisted zipper shorts
$23 - johnlewis.com

Peplum, navy, white and stripes—could an outfit be more tasteful? Show off your princess persona without sacrificing royal comfort with some easy high waist knit shorts and a super-soft sleeveless top. Add in crisp, clean sneakers and a lovely plum crossbody to blend summer and fall together seamlessly.

5. Skorts should be a moving girls' bottom of choice

Move In Day #5

Love an edgy mini, but fear the ramifications of bending over to rearrange that rug? Skorts will be your savior. Pair the look with a too-cool tank and some trendy slides—as long as they have a back strap, they should stay put! A black nylon satchel will be of utmost convenience and shine with effortless style.

With the right shoes, clothing, and bag to carry all necessary supplies (or orientation materials and handouts!), your semester is sure to have a bright and beautiful start.

Have an easy, breezy move-in day, collegiettes!

The Cold Hard Facts of College Guys: Everything You Need to Know Before Starting School

$
0
0

Two of the most exciting things about college are the possibility of a relationship away from prying parental eyes and a whole new world of college guys to forge your way through. From a high school perspective, college men are like a beacon of hope. Not every boy in the world is an immature loser who burps the alphabet and plays World of Warcraft! But there are worries, too: Are college guys only looking for sex? What will they expect from you? Not all these dreams and fears have truth to them, however. Here are some myths and realities to both ease your mind and help you prepare yourself for the four truly wonderful years to come!

Myth: Once high school boys enter college, they suddenly mature into men.

Reality: I hate to be the one to break it you, darling, but as the saying goes, boys will be boys. For the most part, guys will always think farting is funny, playing videogames is a valid use of time, and the more girls they sleep with the cooler they are. Upon leaving high school and entering college, the only thing that changes is that they no longer have parents around to make sure they’re clean, well-fed and not doing anything too stupid/dangerous. Add a bunch of new, equally immature friends and easy access to booze, and you have a perfect recipe for an even lower level of maturity in college “men.”  But don’t worry, you’ll keep up with the boys just fine as long as you can make a good “that’s what she said” joke every once in a while.

However, there are exceptions to every rule. Alex from West Chester University was impressed freshman year by how responsible some of her new guy friends were. “A lot of them were saving up money to live off campus in the coming semesters, or had their courses for the next few years all planned out to make sure they graduated on time,” she says. “I certainly didn’t have my act together yet at that point, but they did.” So yes, maybe guys enjoy a bathroom humor joke every now and then, but that doesn’t mean they can’t behave like grownups when necessary. Just don’t set your expectations too high, and let them surprise you rather than disappoint you.

Myth: All college guys just want to sleep around.

Reality: Okay, to be honest, there are a lot of college guys out there who really do just want to get laid many, many times by many, many girls. But not all guys are the same! If there is only one thing you keep in mind while dating in college, let it be this: everyone is different. Yes, some of the boys you meet won’t be interested in a serious relationship. Maybe even most of the boys you meet won’t be interested in a serious relationship. But there will be a select few who want to get to know you, date you and spend as much time as they can with you. So judge carefully.

Luckily for Sophie from Mount Holyoke College, she learned quickly her freshman year that not every guy who hit on her at a party wanted to get to know her: “I learned to weed out the bad ones and only take risks on the people who were worth my time. I decided to stop being offended if some guy was just looking to hook up – just because I’m not interested doesn’t mean he’s a bad person.” Accepting guys for the way they are rather than trying to make them something they aren’t is a big part of college. It’s also important to do if you don’t want to get your heart broken repeatedly.

Myth: If a college guy keeps pursuing you, he wants to be in a relationship.

Reality: Again, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but just because some guy is telling you he wants to be with you doesn’t mean he wants to be with JUST you. If his conversation is generic, his efforts typically restricted to weekend nights, and his hangout suggestions limited to drinking together, odds are he’s looking for something less than exclusive. “The guy I was into last semester kept wanting to spend time with me, but he kept telling me he didn’t want a relationship,” says Felicia from Penn State. “I ignored it and figured he wouldn’t keep asking to see me if he didn’t want more. But I was wrong.” In the end, she wishes she had listened to what he was telling her rather than reading the signs.

But not every guy is that open about what he wants. At University of Michigan, Leann’s now-boyfriend never told her what he wanted until she pressed him to be open with her. “Before I asked, we were just casually hooking up, and I thought he didn’t want more. But it turns out he thought I didn’t want the relationship, so he didn’t push it. But he wanted it all along!”

Myth: Fraternity guys make good boyfriends.

Reality: I don’t want to over-generalize, but stereotypes exist for a reason. And when it comes to the stereotype of a sleazy, d-bag frat boy who sleeps with a different girl every night, about 85% of the time(according to my anecdotal evidence) it’s spot-on.I have yet to meet a guy at a frat party that wants to be anything other than a one-night stand,” says Hannah from Temple University. “On any given weekend night they have a house full of drunk girls to make moves on – seems like the last thing they want is to give up that freedom.”

The best way to avoid falling victim to jerks like this is to look for a relationship outside the fraternity scene. If you’re in a sorority, listen to your older sisters’ advice – odds are they know who’s spitting game and who actually has his heart in the right place. And some do – Kelly from UMass Amherst is dating a fraternity guy. But she admits she was uncertain in the beginning. In this situation, as with any guy, be careful, and don’t let that frat bro sweep you off your feet too quickly.

Myth: College guys are more experienced with sex, and therefore, have higher expectations.

Reality: Hold on – before I can respond to that, I need to stop laughing. Wow. Being older does not make anyone better at sex. It also doesn’t guarantee that you’re getting any action at all. Many girls enter their freshman year feeling pressured to be a rockstar in the sack but forgetting one thing: the guy they’re hooking up with probably isn’t as experienced as he’d like to appear. Here’s a little secret: guys like to embellish their sexual conquests. Sarah from Wellesley College can vouch for that: “I was a virgin when I got to college and for the longest time I was so scared of hooking up with someone who was better at it than I was. But when I finally did it, I realized he was just as clueless as I was, even if he had slept with someone else before me.”

Even if he didn’t embellish and really is a Casanova, you should never let a guy’s past make you feel insecure about your own level of experience. Take things at your own pace, and never let anyone make you feel inadequate. Besides, if any guy is experienced enough to criticize your level of skill, he’s probably pretty sleazy. Move on!

How to Deal When Your Internship Didn’t Lead to a Job

$

In an ideal world, you’d fall in love with your summer internship, and once it was over, you’d be surprised with a job offer because your employer just couldn’t stand to lose you. Sounds perfect, right? Yet somehow, life doesn’t always work out that easily for most of us.

Don’t stress, collegiettes! Just because you didn’t get hired doesn’t mean you didn’t do a great job or that your supervisor didn’t like you. In many cases, it just means that there wasn’t a position to fill at the time.

So don’t let not landing the job get you down, collegiettes—there are so many awesome perks about your internship that you’ll get regardless if you land a job offer or not. HC counts ‘em off for you.

You made connections

An internship is one of the best places to network. You have the opportunity to meet professionals and develop lasting relationships with them. They may even help you get a job at another point in your life!

When you’ve worked with someone before, he or she can put in a good word for you. So don’t be shy, and talk to as many people at your internship as you can! Ask them questions about what they do and how they got there. Most people will be happy to talk to you.

Before your internship is over, be sure to grab contact information from people you’ve worked with. Connect on LinkedIn so your former coworkers can stay up-to-date with your ongoing projects, and message them occasionally to stay in touch!

You can get recommendations

Most job applications require a list of professional contacts for recommendations. Sure, you can include professors, but it looks better to have former employers as references, too. A former internship supervisor can really speak to your work ethic.

So even if your internship didn’t result in a job offer, it can still help you get a job elsewhere! Again, it’s important to have good contacts at your internship who wouldn’t mind you putting their names down as references. Remember: Always ask potential references before you put their names and contact information on an application.

Expert interview coach Barry Drexler says to make providing references for you as simple as possible for your contacts.

“Make it easy for your reference by asking specifically what you want, e.g., ‘Please provide a reference about my general performance, including my abilities with clients, my computer skills … etc.,’” he says.

You’ll get interview ready

Relevant experience is one of the most important things that employers look for in job candidates. They want to see that you’ve used your time in college wisely. Having internships on your resume will put you ahead of the game!

Having prior experience will beneficial during interviews because you can talk about your internship experiences when answering questions.

“Internships are for learning and improving skills,” Drexler says. “Therefore, during the interview, you must talk about how your internships accomplished this.”

You get to shop companies

One of the perks of an internship is that it allows you to figure out what you want from a future company. Did you like the location, the tasks and the work environment of your current internship? That’s a good sign you should look for similar companies when you apply for jobs! On the other hand, you may have had an internship that you thought you’d love, but realized when you got there that it wasn’t what you expected and you would be happier working elsewhere. That’s one of the great things about internships: You get to see what it is like to work somewhere every day without fully committing yet.

Not getting a job offer might be a blessing in disguise if it would have made you consider taking a job that you didn’t really like simply because the offer was available. You don’t want to get stuck in a job that you don’t enjoy!

“Offer or no offer, you learned and developed skills that someone else wants,” Drexler says. “It’s a good thing you didn’t get it because it could have been the worst job, and now you'll get something better. Most people realize this when they look back, but it’s hard when you're going through rejection.”

Don’t freak out because your friends all have big-girl jobs and you don’t yet. Giving yourself more time to really figure out what you want to do before committing to a job offer will only help you in the long run. So go make the most of the internship experience you have under your belt and explore your other job options!

Female Video Game Characters Just Got a Lot Cooler

Unrealistic female body expectations are almost inevitable when it comes to female video game characters, but one website is out to change that.

Bulimia.com, a website that promotes recovery and support for those suffering from bulimia, published an article showing pictures of iconic female video game characters with realistic bodies. The hope is to show girls that their icons can look beautiful with bodies that more closely resemble those of average-sized women.

"If video game creators are going to pride themselves on accurate digital representations, then it’s time for them to get real about women," reads the article on Bulimia.com. The images feature women such as "Bikini Girl" from Grand Theft Auto V, Cortana from Halo 4 and Jade from Mortal Kombat.

"We didn't intend this project to be a commentary on whether or not comic books send the wrong message about body image," a representative with Bulimia.com told The Huffington Post in an email Tuesday. "Our hope is that when viewers see these superheroes visualized in such a manner that they can identify with, they may feel better about themselves and realize the futility of any comparison between themselves and the fictional universes of Marvel and DC Comics."

According to the article on Bulimia.com, "Girl gamers – especially young ones – could develop a skewed image of how the female body should look. This might mark the beginning of obsessive thoughts about their own bodies, and self-questioning as to why they don’t align with their perceived ideal."

The differences between the two pictures for each character is definitive, but the realistic characters still look awesome - and ready to kick some serious butt. Take a look below:

Instagram Just Banned Another Hashtag

Instagram doesn't seem to want to let up with the hashtag bans. The platform was recently the center of controversy when users discovered that searches underneath #Curvy had been disabled. The ban has since been lifted but now Instagram has taken on #Goddess as its newest target, which is leaving many users a little confused.

Instagram works hard to filter and censor its content to make sure that everything being posted doesn't violate their community guidelines, hence the reason that the eggplant emoji was banned from searches earlier this year. At some point the site even banned #CaitlynJenner and, more recently, #SandraBland, not because the tags were inappropriate but because the company was attempting to protect the tags from hate speech. We get it. Banning the eggplant emoji seems like a no-brainer seeing as though all you'd find in that search is a massive amount of images that we would imagine are NSFW. But we're still trying to figure out what it is about #Goddess that's ban-worthy.

"I can confirm that we did recently block the #goddess hashtag," a spokesperson for Instagram told The Daily Dot. "Here's some additional info: We only block hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines. In this case, #goddess was consistently being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity. We've taken similar actions on dozens of hashtags because they were being used to share inappropriate content. We're working on a way to more quickly restore certain hashtags that have previously been blocked."

Though the statement did provide a little clarity, many people aren't taking the bait. Twitter users are pointing out that there might be a bigger reason as to why #Goddess, which is often used to signify female empowerment, was removed even though #God is still being used.

In addition, users are now calling for Instagram to bring back the #Goddess hashtag.

Women of Color Suffer Most From the Gender Pay Gap

$

Money is one of the biggest and most gut-wrenching subjects both in and out of college. And we women, of course, often deal with the injustices that come with unequal pay at our jobs out of college, but for women of color, this is even more of a problem than we thought.

According to Elle yesterday, July 28, marked #BlackWomenEqualPayDay, when plenty of activists stormed social media with the hashtag to represent the unequal wages black women receive in comparison to their white male counterparts. The National Women’s Law Center says that black women must work 19 months to compensate for what white males earn in just a year. Even if on the same work schedules, black women make $19,399 less than white males, and the number is even less for Latinas. Also, black women who have a bachelor’s degree make approximately only $2,306 more than white men with just a high school education make.

Why is there such a gap for black women? The Center for American Progress reports that researchers find the difference is in the job occupation, hours worked and time in the labor force system, which is often a demonstration of structural barriers. “For women of color, the explained factors that contribute to the wage gap are often different that those of white women due to the fact that women of color frequently work in lower-paying jobs, work fewer hours and experience more substantial caregiving burdens.” Researchers also attribute discrimination as a possible cause for the wage gap.

This news comes at a time when there is a push for a woman on the $10 dollar bill, and as the American Association of University Women shows in the video below, #TheNew10 is only the starting point to a larger discussion about women earning less than men.

Lipstick Hacks: Everything You Ever Needed to Know

$
0
0

We learn a lot of things in college, many of them extremely useful. But there are some things college doesn't teach us about life essentials. Especially when it comes to lipstick. Wouldn’t it be nice if how to apply lipstick properly, and how to make sure your lipstick truly lasts all day, were part of the curriculum? But have no fear; we're here to spill our trade secrets! Here are some lipstick hacks that every girl should know.

1. How to fix lipstick when it melts

Everybody loves a sunny day. But with sun comes heat and it can be all too common to come back from a day out, only to find that your lipstick has completely melted. To rescue it, microwave the remaining bits in a plastic dish until it's in liquid form, pour it into a travel-sized pot and stick it in the fridge to harden. You can then apply it using a lip brush! Tip: you can also do this with two different shades and combine them to make your own customized color.

2. How to remove lipstick without getting it all over your face

Bite Beauty's Lush Lip wipes ($12 at Sephora) are not only effective at removing color, but are also incredibly moisturizing as they're infused with melon extract. Plus, they smell amazing and are made with food-grade ingredients!

3. How to remove lipstick stains from clothes

Long-wearing lipstick is great on your lips... and not so great on your clothes. For those times when you get lipstick on your favorite shirt, dot the shirt with a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol. Then, rub some dish detergent over top and wash. If all else fails, cover the mark in stain remover and let sit.

4. How to apply lipstick flawlessly

  1. First exfoliate! The key is to avoid that scaly look. Store bought lip scrubs, like these ones from Bite ($18 at Sephora) or Fresh ($22.50 at Sephora), are effective, but a DIY mixture of Vaseline and sugar works just as well. Apply with your finger or with an old toothbrush in circular motions.
  2. Swipe on a thin coat of lip balm for moisture. We like Burt's Bees' Beeswax Lip Balm ($3.30 at burtsbees.com).
  3. Next, apply a layer of concealer. This provides a neutral base for the colour.
  4. Border the edges of your lips with a clear or matching lip liner, such as the No Bleeding Lips Secret Lip Liner by No Cosmetics ($15 at Sephora), so that your lipstick won't drift outside the lines.
  5. Paint on the color using a lip brush for control.
  6. Blot with a tissue and apply another layer.

5. How to make lipstick last all day

There is nothing more annoying about lipstick than having to constantly reapply it. But there are some simple steps you can take to make sure it lasts all day.

  • Blot and reapply the color twice, instead of just once. Multiple layers provide ample staying power.
  • Start with a base of matching lip stain, lip liner or concealer first. This provides something for the lipstick to grip onto, sort of like a base coat on your nails does.
  • Add a clear seal over top, like Lipcote Lipstick Sealer ($12.95 at Amazon) to lock in color.

6. Creative ways to use lipstick

In a pinch, lipstick is an ideal multipurpose product. It can double as a blush; just dab three pea sized dots along each cheek bone and blend. Brown shades work well as a bronzer if applied in the hollows of your cheeks. Certain colors can also be used as eye shadow! Purple, burgundy and gold or bronze shades are perfect.

7. How to reattach a broken end back to the tube

So you've been a little too liberal with your lipstick application, or maybe you weren't paying attention and tried to put the cap on while it was still rolled up. Now your favorite color has broken off the base. Don't fret! Just place the broken end back on top of what's left in the tube and use a lighter or a match to melt the edges together. Let cool and it's as good as new!

8. How to tell when lipstick has expired

We're all guilty of sometimes keeping our makeup long past its expiration date. But it can be unhygienic to keep makeup for too long, as it could lead to infection. Yuck! A basic rule of thumb: lipstick usually lasts for around 2 years. To help it last as long as possible, wipe off the end after each use. Make sure you throw out your products if they start to smell differently or change texture or color.

Meet the First Female Coach in the NFL

Professional sports has long been a domain dominated by men, but with one small personnel addition the tide may finally be turning. This past Monday, the Arizona Cardinals football team made the announcement that they would be hiring Dr. Jen Welter, Ph.D, as a coach for training camp and preseason. This is no ordinary appointment: Welter, 37, is now slated to become the first woman to hold a coaching position in the NFL. Can't you just hear that glass ceiling shattering?

Embedded image permalink

Welter, who has played for both women's and men's professional football leagues and holds a doctorate in psychology, is no stranger to record-breaking. She also became the first woman to ever hold a non-kicking position when she played running back for the Revolution last year. She's tough and committed, but Welter asserted in an interview that it was the "heart factor" that she hopes to bring to the team with her new position. Welter will be working with inside linebackers during preseason training as an intern coach.

We hope this amazing change will help open doors for women in professional sports, who have long suffered lower pay and disinterest in the media. Thank you, Dr. Welter, for being an inspiration to collegiette athletes everywhere!

Now that we’ve passed the halfway point of summer, the boredom becomes insanely real. Every activity you could possibly think of doing in your hometown has been done…multiple times. Move-in day is so close that it seems even farther away before, and every day you become more and more restless. To get you through this final month of summer, we’ve put together a list of Netflix TV shows that are so addicting, they’ll make your remaining time at home speed by at the blink of an eye. Trust us, once you start these shows, binge-watching will become your favorite activity to kill the end-of-summer boredom.

1.     Grey's Anatomy

This is a staple show among television watchers, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you NEED to start right away. The drama, friendship and suspense in this show makes it super easy to become hooked. After just one season, you could practically be considered a resident surgeon.

2. How I Met Your Mother

Ted, Robin, Barney, Lily and Marshall represent serious #friendshipgoals, and following their journey through life in this hilarious sitcom is the best way to pass time. By the end of the show, you honestly feel like all five characters are your closest friends, and there’s honestly no better way to spend your summer than with this dream team.

3. Friends

The original HIMYM, Friends is another must-see show that will draw you in after just one episode. The hilarity and companionship in the show is unforgettable; Friends will always be remembered as a classic, so it’s a no-brainer that you have to binge-watch it.

4. Gossip Girl

Life on the Upper East Side is exposed in this guilty pleasure television show, and who doesn’t want to spend their dull summer caught up in the hoity-toity drama of these Manhattanites? Forget summer love, Chuck and Blair are all you need to fulfill your longing for true romance.

5. Gilmore Girls

Ah, the age-old classic that chronicles the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Seriously, we dare you to take longer than a week to finish this whole series, because it is way too amazing and addicting to ever stop watching.

6. Orange is the New Black

We’re sure you’ve heard tons about this Netflix original, and we can guarantee that it’s well worth the chatter. If you haven’t already jumped on the OITNB bandwagon then you need to, because this show is taking the world by storm. Get ready to spend your days engrossed in the drama and shenanigans the goes on between the walls of Litchfield Penitentiary.

7. The Walking Dead

Not into petty drama or sitcoms? Then this show is definitely the one for you. AMC’s take on the zombie apocalypse is riveting, suspenseful and even scary. You won’t be able to stop watching as you follow the few remaining survivors on their quest for safety in this post-apocalyptic world.

8. Lost

With a similar vibe to The Walking Dead, Lost is another classic show that focuses more on serious drama and suspense than anything else. Plus, the bonds between the characters make this incredibly intriguing show even more addicting. Every episode brings both new questions and answers to old ones, creating an everlasting loop of suspense.

9. Chuck

This comedy deserves so much credit for its genius storyline. A normal computer geek shoved unwillingly into the spy world, Chuck makes us laugh until we cry with his dorky mannerisms. Paired up with all-star CIA agent Sarah Walker and ever-so-serious NSA agent John Casey, the trio create a special bond that will make you root for them as they fight the various dangers threatening their country.

10. Revenge

Yet another under-the-radar show, Revenge is one that has one of the most intricate and intense storylines ever seen on television. Every episode ends in a cliffhanger, and the story develops more and more with each episode, making you wonder how Emily Thorne is going undermine all the upper-class socialites that previously framed her father for terrorism, thus ruining her life. Prepare yourself: once you start, you won’t be able to stop until the very end.

11. Breaking Bad

By now, Walter White is a well-known name among television watchers due to his part in this hit show. A science teacher turned king meth creator? Clearly, the intriguing plot alone is enough to convince viewers to start the series, and eventually become so addicted that they blow through it in record timing. Seriously, finding about whether Walt will get away with his illegal work is the most suspenseful thing, and rooting for a bad guy? Well, that’s unique in itself, and probably what makes the show so easy to become attached to.

12. Criminal Minds

Perhaps the easiest show to binge-watch, Criminal Minds is the best whodunit show around. Every episode is completely different, and the forty or so minutes go by at the blink of an eye as you work with the lovable group of detectives to discover who did the crime and why. Just like Grey’s Anatomy, just a few episodes will make you a pro at profiling criminals.

13. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Topping off our list is one of Netflix’s newest originals, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. This feel-good comedy is comedic gold, as we watch Kimmy finally encounter the world after being held in a cult for years. This show teaches us about innocence, family and what it means to truly embrace the world with positivity. After watching the season, you instantly feel amazing and like you can conquer any obstacle in your way.

You now have a whole stack of amazing shows that will provide you with endless hours of entertainment to get you through the mid-summer lull. But beware: Once you start any one of these shows, you won’t see sunlight until you’ve finished binge-watching the entire season. And even then, we can’t guarantee you’ll step outside if you start up yet another of these amazing shows.

The 14 Best 'Friends' Cameos of All Time

$

It's no secret that Friends had some of the best cameos in TV history (Reese Witherspoon! Alec Baldwin!), but which ones really stand out? We ranked our favorites.

14. Hugh Laurie

The actor made a very short appearance on the series when Rachel was flying to London to stop Ross' wedding. His brutal honesty gave us a sneak peek of who his character would be on House M.D.

13. Jean-Claude Van Damme

The best part about JCVD's cameo was pretty much the catfight that ensued between Rachel and Monica; it was a memorable episode, to say the least.

12. Sean Penn

Sean Penn's character was pretty disturbing: he was originally Ursula Buffay's fiance, until Phoebe blew Ursula's cover and he developed a crush on Phoebe. It made for some great comedy, though!

11. Julia Roberts

We felt so bad for Chandler when Julia Roberts' character took her revenge on him for a fourth grade prank, but the actress was a superstar on Friends per usual.

10. Reese Witherspoon

We loved seeing Reese as Rachel's clueless baby sister Jill.

9. Bruce Willis

We loved to hate Bruce Willis as Ross' young girlfriend's dad, but the scene where Willis gives himself a pep talk in the mirror really takes home the prize.

8. Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate was fabulous as Rachel's obnoxious self-proclaimed "favorite" sister.

7. George Clooney & Noah Wyle

Remember that one time ER met Friends? Good times, good times.

6. Freddie Prinze Jr.

Freddie Prinze Jr. was surprisingly touching (and progressive!) as a male nanny.

5. Robin Williams & Billy Crystal

This cameo did absolutely nothing for the plot, but it was glorious.

4. Danny DeVito

Definite proof that Danny DeVito can play ANY role.

3. Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller's character's anger management issues completely slayed us. Well played, Ben.

2. Alec Baldwin

Watch this when you're having a bad day and thank us later.

1. Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt as "Will from high school" with a large chip on his shoulder is everything.

Which is your favorite Friends cameo, collegiettes?

We're Glad Cara Delevingne Didn't Put Up With These Interviewers

If you haven't seen it yet, you need to watch the painfully awkward Cara Delevingne interview that is currently circulating the Internet. Cara did the interview for Good Day Sacramento while promoting her new movie, the John Green novel-turned-film Paper Towns.

Not only does one news anchor begin the interview by calling her "Carla," but they all ask a series of clichéd and even condescending questions. Cara responds to a few of the questions sarcastically at first, which leads to one anchor making this comment:

"I saw you in London talking a couple weeks ago on TV, and you seemed a lot more excited about it then you do now. Are you just exhausted?"

Ouch. It is evident that Cara is upset by the statement, though she answers calmly. Yet the anchors don't stop there, going on to say that she seems "a bit irritated." They even cut the interview short, telling Cara to "go take a little nap" and "maybe get a Red Bull." Once Cara disconnects (you can hear her saying, "Too far" before her video cuts out), the anchors continue to talk about her, stating that "she was in a mood."

The way these interviewers acted was unprofessional and cringe-worthy, not to mention extremely rude. Cara took their patronizing comments like a pro, though her facial expressions said it all. The drama didn't end once the interview was over, however. Shortly after, Cara tweeted: "Some people just don't understand sarcasm or the British sense of humour." She also retweeted actor Zach Braff's response, which read: "or how it's condescending to ask an actress if she's read the book."

We are so glad that Cara didn't put up with these interviewers. While it is important that she stay professional, she shouldn't allow anyone—in the media or otherwise—to treat her like a child.

5 Fabrics that Combat the Summer Heat

$

Summertime fashion can be tricky to master when we've got perspiration, humidity and rising temperatures to face. How can a collegiette maintain her signature style without overheating or collecting sweat (ew)? As it turns out, the secret to an easy-breezy runway-ready summer is fabric choice. So put away those weighty wools and dauntingly heavy denims and say hello to wearable materials that won't cause a heatstroke. With these lightweight lifesavers, you can keep cool while looking smoking.

1. Cotton

100 percent cotton is all-natural, lightweight and breathable, making it the perfect fabric choice for summer clothing. It's extremely accessible (so many clothing items are made with cotton) and diverse, meaning it'll help you keep cool in a variety of forms and outfit staples and can be found at relatively low prices.

Unfortunately, there's a small catch to cotton's cooling. Be wary that although cotton is perfectly fine for the summer months, it does have a tendency to absorb moisture quickly and thus acquire sweat stains, especially if it's the fabric making up your summer whites. But luckily, because cotton's also extremely durable, you'll be able to machine-wash your cotton items frequently without fear. This is vital in the summer, not only to remove those sweat stains, but also to ensure that residue isn't weighing down the fabric and leftover sweat isn't in contact with your skin (gross!).

Choose cotton for all of your tees, tanks, maxi skirts and more. We're particularly obsessed with this cotton and silk (another one of our featured summer favorites!) pinstripe top—talk about posh ($49.99, Madewell)!

2. Linen

Linen is quite possibly summer's best friend. It's similar to cotton in that it's breathable and comfortable, but better in that it's quick-drying and the more permeable weave allows heat to escape your body more quickly and efficiently. Because linen is stiffer than cotton, it won't cling and maintains a darling shape on your body. Worried about the infamous wrinkling that linen products endure? The fashion world is so obsessed with the fabric that they've embraced those wrinkles, making them an integral part of any on-point linen look. Overall, linen is light and airy, classic and chic, and comes in a wide array of fabulous summer brights and pastels. We're definitely obsessed.

Try a linen button-down, linen shorts, linen skirts, or linen trousers like this versatile and work-appropriate pair from J. Crew ($128).

3. Silk

Looking for a bit of luxury? Look no further than smooth and sultry silk. Incredibly thin and super sleek, it feels cool to the touch and oh-so-lovely to wear. The material is great at absorbing moisture, and with its glamorous comfort, wearing it this summer will feel like a total treat.

Paisley is the perfect summer print, so slip into this silk dress or something similar to make a fresh and cool fashion statement ($148, Madewell). Not about silk's expensive prices? Madewell also has some killer silk styles (including adorable dresses) on sale right now, so grab them before they're gone!

4. Wicking Fabric

For the sporty girls and gym-lovers, it's time to embrace a cooler workout! While cotton is great for regular summer clothing, steer clear of it when you're about to engage in high activity. Instead, gravitate towards a fabric that promises to wick away humidity, moisture, and sweat, rather than absorb itwe can't stand the feeling of a moist tee sticking to our overheated skin!

Most sports lines produce items that boast lightweight fabric and impressive water-resistant capabilities. Nike's Dri-FIT fabrics, which make up a multitude of athletic tops, bottoms, socks and even sports bras, are the answer to your summer workout prayers. We adore the Tempo shorts, since they're designed with built-in ventilation and come in a ton of flirty patterns and shades ($27.20, Dick's Sporting Goods).

5. Chambray

We all love denim, but recognize that it can be pretty heavy and unappealing when the temperature rises. But instead of completely abandoning the classic denim look, simply swap out weighty jeans for softer chambray pieces when the heat is especially sweltering! Chambray is way lighter than true denim but just as fashionable. Even better, it maintains all of the best properties of standard denim, including a breathable structure and helpful absorbency. Just like your favorite pair of fall jeans, chambray goes with almost anything, making it a summer staple you can't pass up!

There are tons of chambray tops and bottoms out there, as well as stylish chambray shirtdresses and rompers. We're swooning over this rosy take on the classic chambray button-down, which is the perfect blend of preppy and modern ($59.95, Gap).

Thought you couldn't avoid disastrous sweating and horrible hot flashes this summer? Think again! With these fabulous fabrics, you'll look (and feel) cool as a cucumber!

The Only Dorm Grocery List You’ll Ever Need

$

Even if you have an unlimited meal plan (and if you do, we're totally jealous!), it’s still smart to keep some staple food items in your dorm. You never know when you’ll be running late for class and need a quick breakfast or when you’ll be up late finishing a paper and craving something sweet. Keeping your mini-fridge stocked means that you'll never have to worry about rushing to the dining hall to grab a meal if you don't have the time between activities.

To ensure that your dorm is always stocked with a wide variety of versatile food for any time of day, here’s the ultimate dorm grocery list, complete with a few tried-and-true college favorites as well as a few things you may not have thought of! Be sure to print out the full itemized list at the bottom before your next trip to the grocery store.

Breakfast

We hate to break it to you, but at some point you will inevitably wake up late for your 8 a.m. class and won’t have time to grab something from the dining hall. And there may be a Saturday morning after a night out when you can’t bring yourself to get out of bed before your dining hall's breakfast hours end. Whatever the reason, it’s always a good idea to keep some easy breakfast items on hand.

Instant oatmeal is a great to have because it’s healthy and ready in less than a minute! Another option is cereal; just add some milk. Other grab-and-go breakfast items include fruit (apples, bananas and oranges don’t need to be refrigerated), yogurt (we love Greek yogurt because it’s full of protein) and granola/protein bars. We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so don’t skip it!

Lunch

With a college class schedule, you’re likely to have random breaks throughout the day, which means you're bound to end up in your dorm around lunchtime once in a while. The good thing about most lunch items is that they can also double as dinners, which is great news for a college budget.

Keep it classic with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or if you want to get fancy, buy some sliced turkey and whip up a deli-style lunch. Shredded cheddar cheese between two tortillas makes an easy microwavable quesadilla, perfect with a side of chips and salsa!

Dinner

For the nights you get back late from class or just need a break from the dining hall, you'll be happy you have quick dinners around in your dorm so you can get straight to work on finishing the last season of your new favorite Netflix show—er, we meant finishing that term paper.

Easy Mac is a college staple, and don’t forget about about that tried-and-true college staple, Ramen noodles! Bagel Bites and frozen pizza are both quick to make, and soup is great on a cold winter night. Want something a little more sophisticated (and better for you)? Buy pre-cooked chicken strips, microwave some frozen vegetables and pair with instant brown rice. It’s healthy and convenient; you can’t beat that!

Snacks

Ask any collegiette: snacks are extremely important. Whether you’re hanging out for movie night in your dorm with friends or you just need something salty after you come back at midnight, quality snacks are a must.

Some of the obvious choices are pretzels, chips and Goldfish crackers. You can either buy them in big bags (if you buy them in bulk, they’re cheaper!) or as individual servings (so you can throw one in your bag on your way out the door). Microwave popcorn is always a favorite, or you can change it up with some trail mix. For a healthier snack, grab a cheese stick along with some carrots and hummus! And of course, you can’t forget some good old Ben & Jerry’s to treat yourself after a long day.

Extras

Now that you have all the basics, step up your dorm room grocery game with some extras you may not have thought of! If you’re a coffee drinker, invest in a Keurig Brewing System. It’s ideal when you only want to make one cup of coffee for yourself in the morning. Not a fan of coffee? Get some tea bags and instant hot chocolate instead! If you like honey or sugar in your hot beverages, make sure to stock up on that too.

Consider buying a Brita Water Pitcher, which gives you constant access filtered water to put in a reusable water bottle. It's cheaper than buying plastic water bottles every week! Beyond that, remember to get plastic baggies or Tupperware containers (for snacks and meals on the go), as well as plastic utensils, paper plates, cups and napkins.

There you have it! The only dorm grocery list you’ll ever need. Print out the full list below to make sure you remember everything the next time you stock up!

How to Navigate Work as a Queer Employee

$

0

‘Queer employee etiquette,’ how queer collegiettes should behave at work, isn’t nearly as defined and communicated as mainstream workplace practices. In order to make it easier for our queer collegiettes, we talked to Justine Kelly-Fierro, Assistant Director of Counseling & Student Services at NYU Steinhardt and the Co-Chair of Professional Development for NYU's Pride at Work Initiative, to help you navigate work as a queer employee, especially in states where discrimination, like unfair treatment in the workplace, may unfortunately still be legal. If you follow this guide, you’ll feel confident and carefree at work. Good luck, collegiettes!

How does queer employee etiquette differ from mainstream workplace practices?

“Etiquette is about following societal rules and conforming to norms of behavior in a given situation,” Kelly-Fierro says. “In the workplace, my experience is that the norms of professional behavior are the same regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The expectations and rules, stated or unstated, will likely vary based on each place of employment.”

While this is true, society has formed a stigma that makes it harder to be queer in general, and in the workplace by extension. “Unfortunately, many of the stated and unstated rules guiding gendered behavior at work, or which kinds of relationships are valued formally and informally, are based in heteronormativity and heterosexism—the assumption that all people are cisgender and heterosexual, and the system of oppression that develops when these identities are considered the only norm,” Kelly-Fierro says. Since this is the case, we have put together some guidelines that will make being queer at work a whole lot easier.

Should you discuss your sexuality/identity at work?

When it comes down to it, your sexuality and identity are extremely personal matters, but if you want to discuss them with people, you shouldn’t hesitate. “Coming out at work can bring up a lot of different feelings,” Kelly-Fierro says. “It could be relieving and exciting to be able to share and disclose appropriate amounts of your personal life with colleagues, as straight and cisgender [i.e. who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth] colleagues do, especially if your colleagues are affirming and supportive.” But, you should also know that it’s perfectly fine to keep personal matters to yourself.

If you work in a state where queer employees are not given the same treatment or rights as straight employees, it’s probably best to keep these matters outside of work. “If the culture of your place of employment is not as welcoming, it could be quite scary as you consider the consequences of being out in a homophobic, heterosexist, transphobic environment, and you may fear losing your job altogether,” Kelly-Fierro explains. If a boss or coworker asks you if you have an SO, you can politely say that you’d like to keep your personal matters outside of work.

Not every state has the same rules regarding employees’ sexual orientation or gender identity. Kelly-Fierro shares with us that some states protect employees based on both their sexual orientation and gender identity, while some only protect employees based on their sexual orientation.

“In other states, these laws only apply if you work in the public sector, and do not apply if you work for a private company. Sadly, in some states there is no protection at all. With or without these kinds of protections, when, how and if you choose to come out should be based on your level of comfort.” If hiding who you really are bothers you, you may want to consider finding a job somewhere that has explicit non-discriminatory policies based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

As in any workplace, you should keep extra personal matters outside the office. No matter your sexuality or identity, work isn’t the time to discuss your hookups or what you did last night. If you befriend your coworkers, keep personal conversations for happy hour rather than office hours.

What does it mean to be out at work?

Feeling comfortable and fairly treated at work can mean different things to different people. “Being out may mean that you feel safe and comfortable dressing, wearing jewelry and makeup or styling your hair in a manner that best reflects your gender identity,” Kelly-Fierro says.

“It could mean that you have photos on your desk of your partner or sweetie, and that you feel open discussing the dates or activities you have together when the topic arises," she says. "Sometimes being out involves speaking up for others and challenging oppressive words or policies.” Consider what you’d like to get out of sharing your sexuality or identity at work before doing so.

Coming out at work needs to be a decision that you’re sure you want to make. “Take the time to make an informed personal decision that aligns with your beliefs and values,” Kelly-Fierro advises. “Make a plan that works for you. If there are other out colleagues, think about opening up to them first, and asking about their experiences.” Kelly-Fierro shares that coming out first to someone you’re close with can help give you the confidence and bravery you need to follow your intuition. If coming out at work is important to you, stay true to yourself.

What should you do if you’re being treated unfairly?

If other coworkers or your boss know about your sexuality and identity and are treating you wrongly because of it, speak up. Look into your company’s policy about fair treatment and seek out a representative if you don’t want to handle the situation on your own. If you don’t know where to start, ACLU is a company that “help[s] defend liberty, equality and justice.”

If the unfair treatment is occurring at your campus job, your campus LGBTQ+ center can help by stepping in and righting the discrimination. If your workplace does not support LGBTQ+ employees or doesn’t have a policy against discrimination, it’s time to find a new job. You shouldn’t be working for a company that doesn’t accept you for who you are—why not consider turning your LGBTQ+ identity into a career?

Should you date a coworker?

Dating a coworker can be a sticky situation. It’s best to keep relationships outside of work, no matter your sexuality or identity. People may feel uncomfortable if you make your relationship public at work, and you don’t want your boss or other employees treating you differently. If you have a connection with another employee, feel free to pursue the relationship—just make sure it’s on your own time. If you’re the only queer employee or you want to keep your personal and professional life totally separate, there are plenty of other places to meet cute people.

Now that you know how to navigate work as a queer employee, you should feel less stressed and more confident. You shouldn’t feel like you have to hide who you are, but it’s important to keep personal details for your private rather than professional life. With your new employee etiquette, you can be your amazing and authentic self with your coworkers and boss. Happy working, collegiettes!
