Everything You Need to Know About Condoms (But Were Scared to Ask)

Condoms: You were most likely first exposed to them in a super awkward high school health class, and you probably haven’t learned much about them since. After all, it’s a guy’s responsibility to understand the ins and outs of condoms since they’re wearing them, right?

Wrong! Although it might seem a little embarrassing or weird to research, collegiettes should be just as knowledgeable about condoms as guys for safe sex, and Her Campus is here to help you learn everything you’ll ever need to know about them.

At its core, a male condom is a barrier worn by a male during sex to protect a female from pregnancy and both partners from sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Condoms are typically made of latex, polyurethane or polyisoprene so as not to create friction during intercourse.

There are also female condoms made of the same material as male condoms, though they are used less frequently than male condoms since issues can include irritation to the vaginal area and the condom slipping in or out.

The Basics

Size

Getting the right size condom is crucial so the condom doesn’t slide off or tear during sex (which would render it ineffective), so make sure to talk to your partner before buying condoms or look at a condom sizing chart. Since a guy’s member can come in all shapes and sizes, finding the right condom size isn’t just a question of small, medium or large. Make sure you check condom boxes and use charts to find a condom that’s the right fit for your partner.

Not sure what to get if you’re single and don’t have a recurring partner? The average erect penis is between five to seven inches long with a circumference of around four and a half to five inches, so buying condoms around that size is a safe place to start. You can also always try buying condoms of different sizes.

Storage

Dr. Megan Stubbs, a board-certified sexologist, also encourages collegiettes to give a lot of thought to how they store their condoms once they’re bought. “Keep [condoms] away from extreme temperatures as it can damage latex, and make sure you don't keep them in a wallet where constant rubbing can compromise them as well,” she says. A typical dorm-room drawer is okay for storage.

Usage

Additionally, Dr. Stubbs recommends being careful when opening a condom wrapper. “Try not to open condoms with your teeth; you may rip them,” she says. “Make sure you're putting it on an erect penis the right way. It's okay if you mess up; just grab another condom and start again.”

Not sure how to put on a condom? There are several step-by-step video guides online to help you learn!

Where to Get Them

The great thing about being on a college campus is that condoms are typically available for free in your residential hall or health center! Dr. Jill McDevitt, sexologist and author of Fighting the Crusade Against Sex, highly recommends taking advantage of this offer during college. “One of the nice things about [free condoms on campus] is that you get to try out different brands, shapes, sizes, colors and varieties, so that when you buy your own, you know what you like,” she says.

Are you not able to get condoms at your school? You can find them at any local drugstore, like Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid, as well as many grocery stores and convenience stores.

“Buy in bulk!” Dr. McDevitt says. “Condoms have a long shelf life; many are safe to use for years, so buying in bulk is the economical route, like 12-, 18- or 24-packs. That way you'll always be prepared and can help out a friend or roommate in need, too.”

Condom Types

This is where it gets tricky. Condoms come in an array of sizes, colors and textures, ranging from glow-in-the-dark to scented. It can be extremely overwhelming to stand in front of shelves upon shelves of condoms trying to figure out what to buy. But don’t worry! We’ve broken down the major condom types you can start with.

Latex versus non-latex

Both latex and non-latex condoms get the job of safer sex done just as effectively; the only exception is that non-latex condoms (generally referred to as polyurethane condoms) are much more rigid and loose, so there’s a slightly higher chance that they could slip off or tear during intercourse if you’re not careful when buying or putting them on.

While most people generally prefer latex condoms, be sure to check with your partner to see if he has a latex allergy before having sex.

Lubricated versus non-lubricated

Quite simply, lubricated condoms have substances on them that are meant to make sex smoother for couples, and many can help make the experience more pleasurable for both partners. Some condoms are lubricated just on the outside, while others are lubricated on both sides, so make sure you check the box before buying depending on what you and your partner want.

Additionally, some lubricants contain spermicide or other chemicals that could potentially be harmful during oral or anal sex since it can cause irritation, so make sure you check the contents before using them.

When it comes to lubricated condoms, Celeste Hirschman and Danielle Harel, creators of the Somatica Method of sex therapy, have several tips. “For vaginal, and especially for anal sex, you will want to use extra lubricant even if you use a lubricated condom,” they say in a joint statement. “Condoms are drying, so even if you have plenty of natural lubrication, it is great to have extra just in case. Making sure there is enough lubricant will greatly decrease the likelihood of breakage.”

Textured

Condoms that have different shapes, ribs or studs offer one or both partners more pleasure. As noted earlier, the use of textured condoms depends a lot on you and your partner’s comfort and sensitivity levels, so you may need to experiment quite a bit to find what works for both of you.

Not sure what some of the lingo is for textured condoms? Typically these labels will include words like ribbed, dotted or studded, meaning that there are different shapes or bumps on the condom.

Tantric-style

The name has nothing to do with the kind of sex you’re having; it literally means that there are cool patterns (or “tattoos”) on the condom.

Ultra-thin

As the name gives away, the idea of these condoms is that they’re slightly thinner (by literally 0.001 inches) than regular condoms.

Flavored

Again, the name is quite self-explanatory. These condoms come in all sorts of flavors (ranging from a simple vanilla to a more bitter licorice). These condoms are typically used for oral sex rather than vaginal or anal sex. And be warned: the vaginal and anal areas are sensitive, so if you want to avoid serious irritation, it’s better to steer away from these while having vaginal or anal sex, especially if it’s your first time having sex or first time having sex with a particular partner.

Still confused and overwhelmed by all the condom choices? Dr. Logan Levkoff, a sexologist and relationship expert, recommends Trojan’s Double Ecstasy for first-time users who want something simple but enjoyable. “It is bulbous at the head of the penis, which means it isn't constricting,” she says. “It is also lubricated inside and outside of the condom, meaning smoothness (and increased pleasure) for both partners.”

Hirschman and Harel also have several suggestions for collegiettes. “Thinner condoms often offer more sensation,” they say. “We do not suggest you use condoms with any spermicide because they can cause irritation of the vaginal walls, making you more susceptible to STIs.”

Collegiettes Weigh In

It’s always reassuring to see which condoms other collegiettes are using, so we asked several college women to give their recommendations and experiences buying condoms!

“I think the important thing to remember when buying condoms is to relax. The first time I bought condoms was during senior year of high school, and I felt like every person in Walgreens was staring at me (when, in reality, they probably couldn’t have cared less). Remember that thousands of people buy condoms every day, so don’t be afraid!” – Jane*, Wesleyan University ‘16

“I would say do some research on the types of condoms and go with the simplest option you can find, probably something latex and lubricated, but none of the intense flavored or textured stuff. After all, you don’t want to spend the entire time with your boyfriend fiddling around with the condom instead of actually having sex.” – Lauren*, University of Florida ‘16

“There’s something exciting about starting simple and working your way up. My boyfriend and I have been together for three years, so we’ve gotten more adventurous with condom choice over that time. It was a learning experience for both of us and a lot more fun.” – Katie*, Wesleyan University ‘15

“I would actually recommend going with your partner (if possible) to buy condoms. Not only is it less overwhelming, but it’s also a great experience to learn what he buys and why, which is really important. I once tried to buy my boyfriend condoms and didn’t know that he was super allergic to most brands, so there was an awkward moment when we were about to have sex and he was like, ‘Well, I can’t use these…’ I went to the drugstore with him the next day.” – Sarah*, Florida State University ‘14

“My only bit of advice is never ever put a banana-flavored condom in your mouth. The irony doesn't make up for how horrible it tastes.” – Fiona*, Wesleyan University ‘16

College Guys Weigh In

Every wondered what college guys think about girls buying condoms, or what their tips would be when buying condoms? We asked several college guys for their opinions!

“Girls shouldn’t be nervous about buying condoms. Personally, I’ve always found it kind of nice if I go home with a girl and she has a small stash in a desk drawer or something. It takes the pressure off.” – Sean*, University of Arizona ‘15

“A lot of people forget that both partners experience a condom when having sex, so women shouldn’t feel embarrassed about buying them or weighing in on condom options. Ladies should have a say in what goes inside their bodies.” – John*, Wesleyan University ‘16

“I would recommend purchasing something very basic (latex, lubricated) if you’re a girl buying condoms for a guy. Also, keep in mind that guys have varying levels of experience with using condoms, so even if you may be comfortable with a particular condom type, your partner might not be, and that can lead to some awkwardness. I personally had the experience of a girl handing me a condom that was shaped weird, and I had no idea how to put it on without tearing it completely.” – Lucas*, University of Florida ‘16

“If you buy condoms for your partner and the guy says they don’t fit right, don’t feel embarrassed or upset; it’s all a learning experience! I once dated a girl who bought me condoms, but they were too big and she thought I didn’t want to sleep with her when I tried to explain that I couldn’t use them. I definitely wanted to have sex with her, but I also obviously didn’t want to risk her getting pregnant by using ill-fitting condoms that I knew would slip off.” – Jesse*, Wesleyan University ‘14

No matter which kind of condom you try, remember to stay positive. “Condom shopping should be an enjoying experience,” Dr. Levkoff says. “Consider the time we spend shopping for shoes, and those go on our feet and not inside our bodies!” You should take a good amount of time and care to figure out what you and your partner want to use. Communicate with your partner and you’ll be a pro in no time!

Hillary Clinton Takes a Stand Against Guns After Charleston Shooting

Hillary Clinton is taking a stand against guns in response to Wednesday’s tragic Charleston church shooting. Yesterday, Clinton spoke at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in Las Vegas and made her stance on guns clear: we need to take action against gun violence. She also pointed out the inherent racism of the shooting, which took place at a historically black church and left nine people dead including the pastor.

“We have to face hard truths about race, violence, guns, and division,” she said. “We will stand with (the people of Charleston) as we seek answers and take action.”

She also pointed out a question that’s been on a lot of American minds since Wednesday: “How many people do we need to see cut down before we act?”

The Awkward Girl’s Guide to Meeting Guys

$

We wish having a guy bump into us in the hallway, help us pick up our books, look into our eyes and immediately fall in love with us was something that actually happened in real life, but flirting usually takes a little more work than that. It’s not necessarily a piece of cake for anyone, but it can be even harder if you’re a self-proclaimed “awkward girl” or “shy girl,” or you’re even just someone who doesn’t go out as much. No need to fret, though—we’ve come up with some proven tips to help even the most introverted girls get their flirt on!

Get his attention

Sometimes it can be intimidating to be the one to start a conversation, so let him come to you instead! Carole Lieberman, M.D., psychiatrist and author ofBad Girls: Why Men Love Them & How Good Girls Can Learn Their Secrets, suggests you wear something with your favorite band name, TV character or city on it. This way, she says, a guy will feel more comfortable striking up a conversation.

“For example, if a girl is wearing a sweatshirt with ‘Sorbonne, Paris’ on it, it's a no-brainer for a guy to ask, ‘Oh, have you been to Paris?’” she says.

Lucy*, a junior at McGill University and a self-proclaimed “homebody,” has had success with this method. She says she and her boyfriend met because of the sweatshirt she was wearing one day.

“I was studying at a café wearing a Shameless sweatshirt,” she says. “It’s one of my favorite shows. It’s one of his, too, apparently, and he started a conversation with me about it. Didn’t take long for us to hit it off!”

If he seems interested but isn’t making a move, it’s on you to step up and start a conversation! A simple hello will do just fine, but if you’re looking for something a little more outside the box, try commenting on his textbook (“Is that organic chemistry? I took that course last semester and totally hated it!”), his meal (“Here’s a hint: if you ask for the fries without salt, they have to make a whole new batch for you.”) or even what he’s wearing (“I love your shirt—I’ve been a Pink Floyd fan since forever!”).

Find an awesome wingwoman

There’s no better way to feel comfortable flirting than having a great wingwoman beside you. Patrick Wanis, PhD, human behavior and relationship expert and author of Get The Man You Want!, suggests bringing a girlfriend along with you when you go out to bars.

“Go out with [a friend] who’s the opposite of you, someone who’s a little more outgoing, so they’ll be there… you’ll feel safe,” he says.

He recommends you and your friend talk to a guy you’re interested in, and make a plan for her to leave once the conversation starts flowing (like decide that when you clear your throat and tuck your hair behind your right ear, she will conveniently remember that she has an exam to study for or a dance class in the morning and duck out).

“She leaves and you have the chance to connect further with this person,” he says. It’s a great system because while you end up alone with the guy, “you start with some sort of support, some sort of security.”

Have positive body language

Making yourself approachable doesn’t take a lot—it only means keeping an open stance and being sure you have nice posture.

Denise Christopher, a dating and relationship coach, says the way you carry yourself speaks volumes.

“Never slouch,” she says. “Slouching closes your body and draws your energy down. Instead, pull your shoulders back and hold your head up.”

Smiling is another way to show your interest in a guy. “[It] conveys openness, warmth and a sure way of showing you are friendly and approachable,” Christopher says. “Men love a pretty smile. There is a certain amount of intrigue behind a woman who is smiling.”

Not only is a smile a woman’s best and easiest accessory and self-confidence-booster, it will make the guy feel special, too, and he’ll be more likely to approach you and begin a conversation.

Play up your best feature

Lesli Doares, a marriage consultant and coach, suggests you play up something about yourself that you really like.

“It can be either a physical feature… or a personality feature,” she says. “Then [you need] to learn to play that feature up.”

It might be your eyes, it might be your witty humor, it might be your hair—whatever you think is your best quality, learn how to use it to your advantage. As soon as you can express that confidence you have in yourself, guys will see it and be attracted to it, too.

Learn to laugh at yourself

Oh man—you just spilled your coffee all over yourself and the cute hipster guy at the counter totally noticed. You have two options: crawl into your invisible tortoise shell, or laugh it off.

Embarrassing or awkward moments are a part of every single day you’ll ever have, and a friendly, flirtatious woman will learn to deal with them gracefully.

Doares says that learning to laugh at yourself “à la Jennifer Lawrence” is part of what makes you a good flirt. “The more comfortable you can become in your own skin, learning to really like yourself… is what makes [you] interesting and attractive,” she says.

No flirting technique has a 100 percent success rate, and it’s only natural that sometimes things don’t work out. But if you never take the risk and try to step outside your comfort zone, you’ll never know! We all have our silly or weird quirks, but in order to step out of your shell, you’ve gotta embrace them and learn to use them to your advantage. Whether it means wearing that “nerdy” Big Bang Theory T-shirt you love so much or highlighting your “too-small” ears with some earrings, embrace who you are, and flirting will become second nature.

9 Things to Do When it’s Too Hot to Go Outside

Summer is a great time to hit the beach with friends, have a picnic with your beau and work on your tan. Unfortunately, there are some days where it’s simply too hot to do anything outside. And naturally, when it’s too hot, we resort to napping, Netflix bingeing and planning our dream wedding on Pinterest. But if you want to keep your summer days fun and productive, we have some tips for you! Here are nine activities for those sweltering summer days to keep your boredom (and sweating) at bay.

1. Hit the gym

It’s that time of year again: bikini season! What better time to work on those abs than when you’ll be showing them off at the beach?

“On days when it’s too hot to run outside, I force myself to go to the gym,” says Alexis Watson, a sophomore at Simmons College. “That way, I’m still being productive instead of sitting inside and watching TV.”

Now’s the time to try out a yoga class or get back on the elliptical machine. Take advantage of the sweltering days and escape to your local air-conditioned gym – no excuses!

2. Head to the library

Air conditioning and romance novels – what could be better? When it’s too hot to do much else, consider taking a trip to your local library. “If I'm really dying when it's too hot out, I like to find a quiet spot in the library and read whatever catches my interest for several hours,” says Angie Lorden, a student at the Defense Information School in Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. “I find the library to be more peaceful in the summer anyway because more people are out and about doing summer things.”

So instead of sweating it out, rent some DVDs, check out magazines and stock up on juicy beach reads!

3. Pick up a hobby

You may not have much free time in the fall, so take advantage of your free days and teach yourself something new! Always wanted to learn the guitar? Try out music lessons.Planning to study abroad in Italy? Invest in Rosetta Stone. Since you have a good chunk of free time, summer is perfect for learning a new language or picking up a hobby. So if you’re bored and overheating, consider taking up that interest that you haven’t had time for throughout the school year. There are tons of different ways to pick up a new hobby, so start researching!

4. Try some new recipes

It’s about time you stopped pinning recipes on Pinterest and actually started cooking them! Hot days are the perfect time to make those delicious smoothiesand homemade popsicles you’ve been dreaming of all spring.

“I love to cook, but I hate the heat, so when it comes to trying something new in the summer, I try to steer clear of the oven,” says Hannah Davis, a junior at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. “I love mixing fresh fruits into smoothies and making homemade sorbets as well. It's both entertaining and refreshing!”

Need somewhere to start? Take a look at our favorite smoothie recipes!

5. Get ahead on work

Okay, okay—we know that summer is supposed to be reserved for relaxing, but it never hurts to get a head start! If you’re feeling productive (and sweaty), head inside and start working on your to-do list for the fall. Look up the books you have to buy for class, start searching for an internship for the fall or update your resume. You may be hesitant now, but you’ll thank yourself in a few months.

6. See a summer blockbuster

With all the big-action blockbusters and cheesy rom-coms coming out, summer is arguably the best time for movies. If it’s too hot outside to do anything, move your party to the movie theater and have a relaxing afternoon!

“You get to live in a different place for a while and get away from work and the mundane parts of summer,” says Ivy Stafford, a junior at Keene State College. “Not to mention that the A/C is a major plus!”

7. Have a girls’ night (or day)

Summer is the best time to catch up with your high school friends, and those hot days are the best for manis, s’mores and chick flicks. “I love getting together with my girlfriends in the summer,” Alexis says. “Since we’re all home for the break, it’s a great time to catch up and do fun summer-y activities that you can’t do while we’re at school.”

So rent some movies, stock up on junk food, break out the face masks and have a good, old-fashioned girls’ night! Alternatively, you can stir up some ice-cold lemonade, fill some water balloons and have a girls’ day to beat the heat.

8. Take a class

We know you’re probably not in the mood for school, but taking a class can be a super-enriching summer experience! Not to mention it can get you ahead on your credits for school. Even if you’re not interested in anything academic, there are tons of fun and creative classes out there.

“Last summer I joined my mom at a ceramics studio she went to,” Alexis says. “It was really fun and relaxed, and it was cool to see our progress throughout the summer.”

Even if you’re not so keen on spending your summer in a classroom, do some research and find a fun art class or something else that piques your interest!

9. Play tourist for a day

Though you’re probably not a big fan of those summer tourists who invade your town every weekend, you might take a hint from them and enjoy the sights. “Last summer, when my friends and I got bored, we drove down to the nearest city and acted like tourists for the day,” says Christina Moore, a senior at the University of New Hampshire. “We went out to lunch, took a boat tour and visited the aquarium. Normally I hate doing touristy things, but it’s fun to do every once in a while!”

Spend the day acting as a tourist with your friends and visit whatever indoor attractions your town has to offer, like museums or aquariums. And if you don’t think your hometown (or anywhere nearby) has anything too special, hit the road and play tourist elsewhere! A nice, long road trip accompanied by friends and air conditioning is never a bad idea.

We may long to spend our sunny days outside, but sometimes it’s good to relax and recuperate inside, especially when the weather’s super hot. And while being stuck indoors on a sunny summer day may not seem ideal, it still has potential for fun! Instead of spending your summer inside watching TV and lazing around, try a few of these fun and productive activities.

Laverne Cox Has a Message Everybody Needs to Hear

Laverne Cox once again tells us how it is. The LGBTQ+ advocate and Orange is the New Black star graces the cover of Entertainment Weekly this month and recently opened up about dating in as a transgender woman.

“Most men who are attracted to and date transgender women are probably stigmatized more than trans women are,” she said in an interview with SiriusXM Progress.

It’s an idea that few of us have probably thought about. While trans women like Laverne and Caitlin Jenner are showing the world the strength that women have in being their true self, what of the men who start relationships with them?

“I think a man who is dating trans women, who is a celebrity, or famous or is an athlete or something, needs to come forward ... and needs to say, ‘I love transgender women and [they] deserve to be loved and I’m going to declare that publicly.’ I think those men need some sort of inspiration and hope, so they can live more authentically."

In the same way that UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson’s He for She campaign calls for men to aid women in the fight for gender equality, Laverne wants cisgender individuals to fight for the trans community. With a little love and support we can have a world where cisgender men can openly love trans women and vice versa.

Have you ever wanted to run one of those fun 5K races after you see your friends posting tons of pictures of it on Facebook, but you insist you aren’t a runner? It turns out that you can be a runner if you know the right tips to follow! If you want to start running and train for that Color Run all of your friends are doing, HC has some tips on how to start. With these steps, you can finally become the runner you’ve always wanted to be!

Make a Goal

Setting a goal from the get-go will motivate you to keep running. “It's sensible to begin with a goal of running [a] 5K (3.1 miles),” says Matt Fitzgerald, certified sports nutritionist and author of Diet Cults. “There are 5K events all over the country at most times of the year. Signing up for one of these is very motivating for many beginning runners.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to train for the race you pick. “If you are starting from zero, give yourself at least six weeks to train, gradually increasing your walk/runs and runs until you're ready to run a full 5K,” Fitzgerald says.

There are several fun 5K races out there, such as the The Color Run and 5K Foam Fest. You can find races by going to the race finder on Runner’s World and typing in your city, state, race distance and the date range for when you want to do a race. It will show you all the races in that time frame near you. Try signing up for a race six to eight weeks from when you decide to start running. That way, you will have a definite goal that you’re working towards!

Have a Plan

After you identify a goal, you’ll want to make a structured plan to reach it. Zoe Rousseau, a sophomore at the University of North Georgia, started running about a year ago and did her first 5K recently. “The best advice I have [to new runners] is to make a schedule and get a friend to run with,” she says. Having a plan and someone else to hold you accountable will help you to stay on track.

Pick a training plan that you’re sure you’ll be able to stick to. We recommend downloading the Couch to 5K app, which provides a complete nine-week training schedule and helps time your runs.  Couch to 5K follows a walk/run program to make sure that you don’t injure yourself by starting off with too much running. The plan has you run three days a week, which is a perfect plan for a beginner. It’s easy to follow because it’s right on your phone!

Find a friend and make a plan that works with both of your schedules. Determining set weekly run times and treating them like an appointment by marking your calendar will make it easier to fit the runs in. It also helps if you have a friend who already runs so he or she can help you out. If you don’t have friends who run, get any friend who’s willing and you can both learn together!

To be safe, map out the route you’re going on—MapMyRun is a great resource for planning routes. Make sure the route is in a populated area and you’re with a friend. Mapping out the route will also help you plan out your distance and track your time. After each run, track your progress in a notebook or on your phone by documenting your times and how each run felt. As you continue to train, your runs should get easier and your walking time should decrease.

What to Wear

When you’re shopping for the perfect running attire, you want to make sure you’re picking breathable fabrics. “I recommend wearing tops, shorts and socks that are specifically designed for running,” Fitzgerald says. “You will be most comfortable in these.”

As a runner, you’ll want to avoid cotton materials, as they will absorb sweat and cause your skin to chafe or blister. Look for technical apparel, which is designed to wick the sweat away from your skin rather than hold sweat. This material also tends to be lightweight and more comfortable. When you’re shopping, look for clothes whose tags say “Dri-FIT,” “TRANSPOR,” “DRYROAD” or “CoolMax.” These are all materials that will feel best on your run.

One of the most important parts of a runner’s attire is proper shoes, according to Melanie Ludwig, owner of Prestige Fitness in New Hampshire. “Shoes are crucial—if you are serious, make the investment and go to a store that can fit you,” she says. “Lower-limb injuries frequently occur because of improper footwear.”

Without the right shoes, you could potentially get injured, so you want to make sure you have a good pair. There is no one shoe that is perfect for everyone. Get your shoes from a running specialty store that caters to runners and can help you find the shoes that will be best for your feet specifically. Check out stores like Road Runner Sports to find your perfect shoe.

Go on Your First Run

Before you start running, make sure you warm up and stretch out your muscles so you get your body ready to run. Start by warming up your body and preparing it to work out. Wake your body up with a brisk walk for two to three minutes and then a light jog for another two to three minutes.

Once you feel warmed up, you’re ready to stretch. You want to make sure you’re targeting your calves, hamstrings, hip flexors and quadriceps, as these are the muscles you’ll be exerting most on your run. Fitzgerald recommends that “before a run, [you] do dynamic stretches to get your muscles ready to move.” Dynamic stretching is stretching as you are moving. This type of stretching warms your body up and prepares it for the intensity of running.

An example of a dynamic stretch is side leg swings. To do this, stand facing a wall with your fingertips braced against it. Now, tilt your body toward the wall. Swing your right leg from side to side between your body and the wall in big, relaxed movements. Do this about eight times and then repeat with your your left leg. You can find a full dynamic warm-up routine here.

After you stretch, you’re ready to start training, but don’t go crazy right off the bat. When you are a beginner runner, you don’t want to rush into anything too soon. “The biggest mistake new runners make is going out and running as hard as they can until they are out of breath, get side stiches or pull a muscle,” Ludwig says.

It is important not to push yourself too hard when you’re just starting out. Fitzgerald says, “Running is a high-impact activity. It takes time for the body to become more durable. If you do too much too soon, you'll get injured.” Even though you’re excited to get out there and want to improve every day, your body needs rest in order to heal after each run.

Start out by mixing walking and running. Begin with a brisk walk and work your way into a run. Alternate the running and walking by running for a minute or two and then going back to a brisk walk. “Gradually lengthen the jogging segments and shorten the walking segments until you are comfortably able to run the whole time,” Fitzgerald says.

Once you start running, track your progress to help you stay motivated. It’s always fun to see how you are progressing and it can help motivate you go out and run on days you feel like quitting.

Ludwig says, “Keep a record of your ratio of walk to run, and try to improve that until you can complete a mile. It's gotta be baby steps to appropriately train your body.”

After you run, it is important to do a cooldown and stretch out again. Ludwig stresses that post-run is the most important time to stretch. She recommends using this cooldown routine from the American Council on Exercise.

After your cooldown, you have officially completed your first run!

You definitely won’t become a runner overnight, but now you have tips and a plan to get you started! Remember to take baby steps and set goals. You’ll be racing to the finish line of your first 5K in no time!

Chia seeds. Let's talk about my obsession. It's real. I'm obsessed. I sprinkle that seed on everything.

So what are these little chia seeds I speak of? They're the same little seeds that made your tweety chia pet grow big and strong back in 1995. Now we decided if they can make a random creature grow big and strong, they can do the same to us! Chia seeds are super rich in antioxidants and full of fiber, magnesium, zinc, iron and calcium. Do you see all that health?!

According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one ounce of chia seeds (approximately 28 grams) contains 138 calories, 8 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrate, 10 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein!

When chia seeds are soaked in a liquid, they develop a jelly-like bubble texture. This extra added substance makes for a more filling drink that'll leave you less hungry later on!

My recommendation—start with this incredible recipe here, it's absolutely perfect for cooling you down as the warmer weather starts to roll on in!

Chia Seed Strawberry Lemonade

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of strawberries (stems cut off)

  • Juice of 1 large lemon (or the juice of 2 small limes if you want to make it limeade)

  • 3 tablespoons chia seeds

  • 16 ounces of water

  • 1-2 Tablespoons of honey

A New Study Shines Light on Our Cat Video Addiction

A new study surveying 7,000 CVPs (cat video people, obvs) has just confirmed everything we've ever believed about cat videos, and according to research done by Jessica Gall Myrick, PhD, of Indiana University, our addiction is good for us—kind of.

Basically, the study proved a few things we were already sure about:

  1. CPVs love cats.
  2. Cat video watching is a top-notch form of procrastination.
  3. Watching cat videos makes us happy.

Lady, we could've told you that! But in all seriousness, there were some other interesting findings. One was that CVPs are likely to be super agreeable (we find joy in the little things, like squeaky kitten meows) but also a little shy (we're just quiet because we don't want to scare the snoring kitties.) CVPs also enjoy a daily dose of dog content, which goes to show that any animal is viral-worthy.

Now, back to procrastination. Is it really bad that we delight in Grumpy Cat instead of writing our essays? While procrastination will probably hurt us in the long run, cat video procrastination doesn't produce the same anxiety or guilt that other forms of procrastination do. So, if you're in the mood to loaf, we're giving you permission to binge on Lil' Bub instead of taking a nap.

7 Beauty Practices That Sabotage Your Skin

We’ve spent countless hours scouring magazine pages and blogs and spending our money on beauty products, but flawless, glowing skin still eludes us. If you’re putting time and effort into your beauty routine but still not getting results, your skin care routine could be the culprit. Some experts say several practices we swear by for perfect skin are actually bad for us. We talked to some beauty experts to find out which skin care routines you should skip!

1.  Exfoliating too often

Many collegiettes think exfoliation is the holy grail of glowing skin, but while skin with dirt and bacteria looks less than desirable, scrubbing away at your skin like it’s your dorm floor is not the answer. Exfoliating too often with microbeads or natural granules like sugar can actually injure your skin. This can lead to dryness and inflammation, destroying healthy cells and promoting skin hyperpigmentation while stripping away natural oils.

New-York-based esthetician Reneé Rouleau agrees with the American Board of Dermatology that you should exfoliate your face and body no more than once or twice a week. This allows you to remove the dead skin without those other harmful effects. Using a chemical exfoliator? Opt for products with beta hydroxy acids over those with alpha hydroxy acids in the list of ingredients, like DHC Salicylic Face Milk ($19); they sting and irritate less than the latter.

2. Putting acne medication all over your face

For the most of the month your skin is normal, but on the week around your period, Mother Nature gifts you with five humungous pimples. So on your way back from class, you pick up some acne products at the campus drugstore. But instead of applying your acne cream to your spots, you put it all over your face. Big no-no.

Aesthetician Lisa O’Neill Flanagan of NYR Organic says, “Acne medication should only be used on spots. It can actually dry out your skin (healthy parts) and cause overproduction of oil, which can in turn cause more breakouts.”

If you’re faced with irregular breakouts, Rouleau instead recommends light exfoliation (remember, just once or twice a week!) to remove dry skin cells, unclog pores and help fade those post-breakout marks. Disinfect the area with a natural astringent like witch hazel to eliminate bacteria and help prevent the spread of breakouts. Finish by hydrating with a water-based moisturizer to keep your skin cells healthy. We recommend Neutrogena’s Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 35 ($11.99).

3. Slathering on thick eye creams

We know too well those eye cream commercials with the models dotting concoctions that look like yogurt under their eyes. Beauty companies are always updating their formulas to be thicker and supposedly more effective. But Rouleau says that “many heavy eye creams typically contain heavy oils, like mineral oil or petroleum [jelly].” These ingredients are not easily absorbed by the skin. They can sit on top of the skin, to an extent suffocating it, but companies use them because they provide a false sense of hydration. What you’re actually is feeling is grease, not moisture.

Flanagan says it’s never too early to start using eye creams, just opt for a lighter formula that sinks into the skin while still keeping it soft and moisturized. She says a good eye cream feels more like a serum, as the delicate skin around the eye area can’t tolerate an overabundance of creams. Try Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum ($22.99).

4. Using your fingers as tools

Remember that absurd little brush that came with your cream eye shadow? It turns out you should actually use it! Your fingers may seem more convenient for a quick swipe across your lids, but by doing so, you’re actually contaminating the product with the bacteria from your hands. Flanagan recommends using clean brushes to apply your eye shadows and lip products that come in jars. Check out Ulta’s Large Eyeshadow Brush ($14). The synthetic brush works well on both cream and powder shadows.

5. Using cleansing wipes instead of face wash

Reaching for your facial wipes after you come home from a party may seem like a better option than sleeping in your makeup. However, these wipes only remove some of the dirt and makeup from your face, leaving behind irritating residue than can clog your pores.

“It’s better to remove the makeup with a cleansing wipe than not to remove it at all, but it’s always best to cleanse,” Flanagan says. She recommends looking for a face wash with organic and natural ingredients that are gentle on your skin. Try the Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser ($7.99), which does not contain harsh chemicals.

6. Overloading on skin care products

Most collegiettes are beauty-product junkies, using creams and cleansers for acne, dry skin, hyperpigmentation and every other skin condition they can think of. But by over-treating your skin, you can run the risk of over-inflammation.

Forget about all those complicated serums and treatments! Flanagan suggests simplifying your routine to two steps: cleanse and moisturize. She also recommends trying a BB cream for an easy way to get everything your skin needs makeup-wise on a busy day. Try Maybelline’s Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Beauty Balm Skin Perfector ($8.99).

7. Washing your face in the morning

Cleansing your face may seem like a great way to start your day. But Dr. Jessica Krant, a dermatologist from New York, begs to differ. She says that while you’re sleeping, your skin regenerates, reestablishing its pH levels and increasing collagen production. Why would you want to wash off all this hard work?

Flanagan agrees that morning cleansing is unnecessary. “Just rinse with water in the shower or sink and, once again, moisturize!” she says.

On your journey to perfect skin, don’t give up hope. Stick to the basics, like a cleanser and moisturizer that are appropriate for your skin type. Consistency in applying your products and taking off your makeup is essential for getting your best results. It may be a matter of trial and error, but the combination of beauty practices for your best skin is out there!

Women Are Now Shaving Their Faces

$

In the next (probably ridiculous) attempt to get women to lengthen their beauty routines even more (sigh), women everywhere are now swearing by shaving an unusual area—their face.

In a recent New York Times article, celebrity facialist Kate Somerville admits to shaving her face weekly. What started as an attempt to ditch a painful and irritating wax ended in a habit—one that apparently exfoliates and makes makeup slide on smoother (okay, now we're seeing some benefits).

According to the New York Times, 3 out of 4 young women are already removing some sort of facial hair. The majority of maintenance is done on eyebrows, with upper lip waxing coming in as a close second, so it's no surprise that shaving is the next big thing. After all, who wants to make frequent salon visits when a solution can be found at home?

The Benefits

Peach fuzz is without true pigmentation, meaning the mystical powers of laser hair removal are ineffective at addressing it. Coupled with the fact that waxing can be painful, shaving seems like an easy alternative.

For those who do it, it's also not painfully often. In the New York Times story, many interviewees reported shaving only once every couple of weeks or months. That's probably because it's unnecessary to do anything more: it's a total myth that you'll grow back a wildly thick beard after a face shave (thank goodness). Rest assured that if you try it, there's no way that hair is getting coarser or darker. And if it feels like it? It's only because the hair has a temporarily sharp edge after a fresh cut!

So, if you'd really like to be bare of hair, the trend is definitely doable, and it's good to hear that women aren't embarrassed of admitting that we've all got hair on our faces!

For high-quality care, it's always good to see and expert, but face shaving can also be totally DIY. If you're interested in starting, here are some handy quick tips:

  1. Use a men's razor for better precision and efficacy.
  2. Prep your face with shaving cream, lotion, or oil to prevent cuts.

The Problem

Have you ever been at the salon, about to get your eyebrows done, when the beautician asks if she should address your mustache? We have, and it's not a fun feeling—we didn't even realize we had one! Why should we be ashamed of something that's totally natural, and why does society feel the need to always find something new to fix?

In the New York Times article, interviewee Marie Goldberg says, "Women, especially blondes, think they have no facial hair because it’s so light, but when the sunlight hits it, it looks like you could run your fingers through it. I just want to grab them and be like, 'Here’s my Tinkle.'" A Tinkle being a type of razor, we're a little shocked at Goldberg's harsh comments. Is it really that bad to have barely-there facial hair?

What's problematic is that this new trend instills a whole new level of body shaming. Can't women catch a break? Last time we checked, a little bit of peach fuzz wasn't hurting anyone, and just because something's trending doesn't mean it's good or necessary. Ladies, embrace that fuzz if you want to, rock those Cara Delevingne brows, and never fear a little 'stache (let's be real, they're inevitable). You're beautiful with or without a clean shave, and honestly, we can barely keep our legs in check as it is—ain't nobody got time for an extra thirty minutes of razor time or an upper lip razor burn (cringe).

Will you be trying the new trend, or have you had it with extensive beauty routines?

Here’s Why No One Should Actually Care About Your Number

$
0
0

Getting to know your new campus cutie can be an exciting experience in the beginning, from the cute texts that you exchange throughout the day to the hours that you spend on the phone late at night.

But there comes a time in almost every relationship when you both agree to give each other a little history lesson about who you’ve been with and how far along things got. Sometimes, opening up to people about our sexual history causes us to get a little uncomfortable and it can even cause some women to “edit” their numbers a little bit because they’re afraid of being judged. But, let us let you in on a (not-so-little) secret: Your number doesn’t actually matter and we’re ready to tell you why!

1. It doesn’t change who you are

Your number doesn’t change you nor does it define who you are. “I think every college woman has a right to have sex or not whenever it’s the right thing for her,” says Iris Goldsztajn, a junior at the University of California, Los Angeles. “There is no time when a number comes to define a person (except at the DMV) and the number of people you’ve slept with is so completely irrelevant to who you are.” In short, don’t feel as though you have to feel bad for being sexually empowered.

2. The past is the past

Stop putting so much emphasis on whom you’ve been with and whom your significant other has been with. The more important thing to focus on is the relationship that the two of you have now and how you both can maintain it. And to maintain the stability of your relationship would mean to leave the past in the past. “In any relationship, holding people accountable for what they have done in the past is not healthy for the relationship,” says relationship expert Kim Olver. “Relationships are better based on how people treat each other in the present relationship. If you want to know the past because you are attempting to use it to determine the future, the conversation would be better had about values. This will keep the conversation based in the present.” Focus on the future goals of your relationship with your SO rather than hanging their past over their head.

3. It’s your number and no one else's

Your number, your business. If you don’t feel comfortable letting people know your sexual history, then you shouldn’t feel obligated to. “The past is a place where little power lies since we cannot change it,” Olver says. “What two people did before getting involved with each other is no one’s business.” A number is personal and you and your partner both have every right to keep that information to yourselves.

Remember, your worth isn’t determined by your sexually adventurous nature. So don’t ever let anyone make you feel ashamed of your sexual experiences. Your number is irrelevant and the right person will see that someday.

4 Success Tips for Introverted Interns

$

Being thrown into a new professional environment can be scary, but for collegiettes who are introverts, it can seem almost impossible to thrive. There’s nothing wrong with being an introvert in the workplace. With that in mind, there are some struggles introverts may face when they start a new internship. It’s important not to let your fears get in the way of your overall experience. You don’t have to be a total chatterbox to make a good impression! In fact, there are tons of ways to be successful as a shy intern.

1. Don’t let nervousness control you

Being nervous at the start of an internship is normal, but when you let it affect your work, it becomes a problem. Expressing that you feel nervous may actually help you feel more relaxed. Everyone is nervous on his or her first day, and your coworkers will probably expect you to be overwhelmed at first.

When it comes to dealing with nerves, Suzanne Dagger, director of career services at Hofstra University, says, “Try and develop a mentoring relationship with your direct supervisor or a co-worker. Share with them your worries or concerns, and see how they can help.”

Isabel Fontana, a junior at Albion College, had to shake off her nerves to get the job done. My internship involved calling people I didn’t know on the phone, which was very awkward and made me uncomfortable,” she says. “Once I forced myself to call, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” Sometimes you may psych yourself out in preparation for the absolute worst outcome—don’t do it! Instead, envision a positive result.

2. Introduce yourself to one new coworker a day

Walking into a room where everyone else knows one another can be intimidating. Even if you’re shy, making a point of introducing yourself to your coworkers is extremely important.

“A more introverted or reserved individual may hesitate when being asked to go to the weekly happy hour. However, there are other ways to make connections,” Dagger says. “Find one other intern or a coworker and see if you can make plans for lunch, or, even better, ask them questions about their career path, educational preparation, their goals and what they like and don't like about the industry.”

Imogen Hawley, a junior at the University of St Andrews, found a way to make conversation while waiting at the copy machine. “It was awkward to stand around at the copier by my coworkers’ desks in silence, so one Friday, I made the effort to ask people about their weekend plans,” she says. “Knowing things about my coworkers made me feel more relaxed in a new place and more confident to ask them about their experiences.”

Making connections with people and learning about their lives will make you feel more comfortable in a new environment. There’s no use in hiding at your desk, so instead start slow by trying to talk to one new person per day.

3. Prepare your questions before you ask them

Asking questions can be scary for an intern who is shy. However, “keep in mind, most supervisors want you to check in with them and ask questions, because if you are doing it wrong, you are wasting company time!” Dagger says.

No matter how simple the question may be, you’ll be better off asking for help rather than getting frustrated on your own. If you’re uneasy about asking a question, it will help to plan out exactly what you want to say beforehand. Be sure to explain how you tried to solve the problem yourself first. This will show that you are dedicated to the project and focused on doing a good job.

4. Accept that you will make mistakes

An introvert may be more scared of making mistakes at her internship. Kaley Schwind, a recent alumna of Indiana University, dealt with the fear of messing up at her internship.

“I did not want my boss to think I was unintelligent or not ready for the internship,” she says. “However, as an intern, it's almost impossible to NOT make any mistakes. You have to get past the ‘feeling like an idiot’ part and take each mistake that you make and learn from it.”

Don’t spend your time worrying about making mistakes, and instead remember that internship coordinators create these opportunities for people to gain experience. If you mess up, don’t be scared to admit it. You’re not expected you to know absolutely everything about that particular job field and do every task flawlessly all the time! Try to approach this internship opportunity with a positive attitude, and don’t get down on yourself if you mess up. Look at any mistakes you make as lessons that will benefit you in the future.

Don’t let the fact that you’re more reserved than others stop you from doing your best work. If you put yourself out there and take a step out of your comfort zone, you’ll not only feel more comfortable, but also, you’ll feel accomplished. Remember that the internship coordinators chose you for a reason. Even if you identify as an introvert, you can use this opportunity to take risks and reinvent yourself any way you’d like. The professional skills you’ll learn during an internship will help you in future jobs, so don’t hold back!

Can You Stand the Sound of Your Own Voice?

$
0
0

Have you ever recorded yourself saying simple, everyday phrases to see how you sound to other people? And, were you surprised when you heard a high-pitched sound that seems to be a lesser reincarnation of what you thought you actually sounded like? The answer as to why this occurs may be different than anything you've ever heard.

According to Elite Daily, our brains make us think that our voices sound lower than they actually are, so when we hear them on a recorder they sound much higher than they actually are! Dr. William Cullinan, Dean of the College of Health Sciences and director of the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center at Marquette University explains the paradoxical relationship between our minds and our voices: “We hate it because it is so foreign. You’ve certainly never heard yourself that way normally — and for good reason — you can’t avoid producing both internal and external stimuli prior to hearing your own voice. The irony is you are the only person who ‘hears’ yourself in the way you think everyone else does.”

SciShow’s science expert, Hank Green, says our surprise when we hear our voices is attributed to how we learned to speak as infants. By looking at people’s mouths and trying to emulate those same sounds, this shapes how we believed ourselves to sound.

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, there are three parts to the ear. The first part is the outer ear, which we can feel and see. The second is the middle ear which is comprised of three bones, whose function is to conduct sounds to the inner ear. Finally, the inner ear contains the cochlea, which acts a transmitter of sounds into signals for the brain to respond to. Sound enters the brain through two ways: air-conducted and bone-conducted. These two ways mix together to produce an infinitely unique sound for each individuals’ ears only. Dr. Cullinan further explains: “When you ‘hear’ your own voice, however, not only do the sound/pressure waves leaving your own mouth (call this the external stimulus) reach your ear and activate this series of events, but a second thing happens: The physical act of producing speech, which involves contraction of the muscles of the larynx (and others), creates a vibration that is translated through the neck to the skull where the entire auditory transduction apparatus is.”

This custom-made sound that we define as our voices is for only our ears and is the sound we expect to come across for others when we speak. So, the next time you are shocked at what you hear on a recorder, remember that everyone has this moment of shock and they may feel just as confused as you!

June 21 is National Selfie Day, and so once again it's time to swipe on some Insta-ready makeup, spot out a prime picture-taking location, and perfect that selfie pout. Need some inspiration for your next photoshoot? From funny to iconic and classic to unexpected, check out the all-time top selfies to date.

1. The Oldest

Robert Cornelius was bored and particularly angsty one afternoon in 1839. "What should I do?" he thought to himself. And so, the selfie was born.

2. The Coldest

Our favorite host, Ellen DeGeneres, was delighted to have the honor of helping Kim Kardashian complete the Ice Bucket Challege. Kim, of course, was taking a selfie.

3. The Holiest

Yes. That is the Pope in a selfie. Have selfies been officially blessed? We hope so.

4. The Most Suspenseful

Most dangerous selfie ever. That happened.

Tampa Bay Rays sideline reporter Kelly Nash was totally oblivious to the speeding baseball just inches away as she took this selfie. You don't have to keep cringing—it narrowly missed her head! While we are thankful for this hilarious image, we are way more thankful that she wasn't hurt!

5. The Presidential Selfie

When you introduce an older generation to a millennial trend, you can expect some confusion to ensue. It looks like President Obama hadn't quite yet learned proper selfie etiquette in this image, where he and two prime ministers can be seen snapping a shot in the middle of Nelson Mandela's memorial service. And they say we don't ever put our phones away! Michelle Obama was obviously above such childish antics.

6. The First Lady Selfie

We can't say we're surprised that Jackie Kennedy snapped a classy selfie in 1954—she always was ahead of the trends.

7. The Space Selfie

We're all a little starry-eyed at this breathtaking space snapshot. One small step for astronaut Aki Hoshide, one giant leap for selfie history.

There is not just one shirtless selfie of proclaimed badboy Justin Beiber. The star is famous for his shirtless collection, but this specific shot is iconic for being the first Instagram video to ever hit one million likes.

10. The Bey Selfie

Both girls look bey-utiful in this unstaged, on-stage photobomb by the queen herself.

11. The Ape Selfie

So, this happened. While photographer David Slater left his camera unattended during a trip in Indonesia, a black macaque monkey took the opportunity to get a glamour shot in. You look beautiful, darling.

12. The Elephant "Elfie"

Let's get this Elfie on Ellen Degeneres! #ElfieOnEllen @theellenshow
