The 5 Best (& 5 Worst!) Looks from 'Mean Girls'

$

0

Will the awe-inspiring magnificence that is Mean Girls ever get old? We certainly don't think so, and thankfully, neither does Netflix! To celebrate the addition of Mean Girls to Netflix this month, we've rounded up the five best (and five worst!) looks from the classic film. Warning: Plenty of Plastic and '04 fashion ahead!

Best

1. Festive and flirty

The dance number that launched a thousand outfit parodies. This is one of the only looks in the film that doesn't feel dated, and the black accents to the traditional red and white outfits make this iconic look even sexier.

2. Edgy and awesome

The more we thought about it, the more Janis Ian deserved to be on this list. Sure, she has a penchant for knee-length skirts and patterned socks, but Janis knows her style and rocks it. Plus, the outfit she's wearing when she meets Cady is totally cool, with her layered tees and "RUBBISH" logo. Janis has emo style down pat and never cares what anyone thinks, and that's why we love her.

3. Catsuit curves

A Halloween staple, Gretchen is the only Plastic to not go completely overboard on the sexy holiday. Sure, the spandex catsuit shows off every single curve, but it shows way less skin than Regina and Karen's outfits, and is somehow the sexiest look of all.

4. Cult classic

Two words: velour tracksuits. Nothing says 2004 like a bubblegum pink tracksuit, and Regina's mom (aka Amy Poehler) absolutely rocks it. We wouldn't be caught dead in one of these today, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't give anything to be able to wear a Juicy Couture tracksuit to Starbucks while hungover.

5. Pretty pastels

The outfit Cady is wearing during the assembly is often overlooked, but it's the relative simplicity of it that makes it shine. Variations of her ribbed top and flippy skirt could have been found in the closet of any teen girl in '04 and the pastel shades really make Lindsay's red hair pop.

Worst

1. Cut it out

We know that this scene is meant to prove that Regina can rock anything, but a tank top with boob cut-outs? Not even the queen of the Plastics can pull that off.

2. Unwelcome undergarments

It wasn't until the 10th or 12th time we watched Mean Girls that we realized Cady is legitimately wearing a bright red bra (with the straps showing) under her strapless black-and-pink dress. Knowing the power of the strapless bra like we do, we can't help but cringe at this scene.

3. Vulgar vest

It's never really explained why Ms. Norbury is wearing a vest covered in hideous pins, but does it really matter? As much as we love Tina Fey, Damian is right to make fun of this horrendous ensemble.

4. Print problems

We get that graphic tanks and loud prints were big in 2004, but we can't get on board with this look. A tank top with "Bling Bling" across the front? Come on, Karen. And that heart-print micro-mini isn't doing you any favors, either.

5. Purple faux pas

While we totally respect Janis' choice to rock a tuxedo to the Spring Fling dance, it's just an eyesore. Maybe a bit of tailoring or... honestly, did she have to go with that grape purple?

With so many looks to choose from, it was tough to narrow our lists down, but in the end, we managed to pick the most memorable outfits from Mean Girls, from fugly to fetch. Now head on over to Netflix and decide for yourself!

The 12 Weirdest Online Dating Messages Ever

$

If you’ve ever tried online dating, you know the Internet is full of weirdos. Don’t get us wrong; we’re firm believers in the power of websites like OkCupid to bring great couples together... but let’s be real. For every great date or flirty message exchanged that came from being winked at online, there were a few weird ones to weed through. We spoke to some collegiettes about the worst messages they’ve ever received, and the results were pretty entertaining. Check out the worst of these online pick-up lines, from the mildly uncomfortable to the what-were-they-thinking awful.

12. “Hey Friend, I think we could be friends. Sincerely, Friend P.S. Friendship”
– sent to Emily, a recent graduate of Barnard College

Dear Friend,

Thank you for taking the time to apply. While I appreciate your interest in my friendship, I am unfortunately not accepting friendship applications at this time. Best of luck in your future endeavors.

Kindest regards,
Enemy

P.S. Enmity

11. “I'm sure you have been wondering where I have been all your life. Sorry I got held up rescuing damsels in distress, slaying dragons, freeing captured unicorns and then of course I got turned into a frog there for a bit. So sorry it took this long to get in touch with you. I'll make sure you have the fairest pony in all the kingdom and don't even get me started on the tiara :-)

ps. you are a princess right?”
– sent to Kelsey, a junior at Ohio State

Only one princess can express our feelings about this message:

10. “Can I get some fashion advice? I've been mixing pastels with plaid lately and I just don't think it bodes well for me anymore.”
– sent to Kelly, a senior at Columbia University

Oh, baby, baby. There’s nothing sexier than talking prints. It’s true, though; we’ve heard pastels and plaid are an omen of upcoming rejection.

9. “I just looked into it and it’s not illegal to wear a towel to work.”
– sent to Julia, a recent graduate of Barnard College

…we’ll keep this in mind when we get dressed tomorrow, thanks.

8. “I wanna live in your socks so I can be with you every step of the way.”
– sent to the author

That just sounds uncomfortable.

7. “Are u interested in a date? THANX”
– sent to Elizabeth, a senior at Barnard College

No. UR WELCOME

6. “Hi!! Do you like older men??”
– sent to Sarah, a senior at Barnard College

Isn’t there a reason you set an age range on these websites? Whoever said 40 was the new 25 was seriously disturbed.

5. “Hey sexxxXxE. I jus date Azn chicks but Ill make an exceptin 4 u babe ;)”
– sent to Danai, a recent graduate of Harvard

WowwWw. Were so flatterd, we cant belive we made the cut

4. “Can you give me directions to your heart? I've seemed to have lost myself in your eyes.”
– sent to Rachel, a senior at Columbia University

Yikes. If you’re going to be this cheesy, could you at least use correct grammar?

3. “Ya, just bored. You do seem...ok :) How are you?”
– sent to Emily, a recent graduate of Barnard College

BRB, swooning.

2. “are you interested in my trademark massage today? :)”
– sent to Rachel, a senior at Columbia University

Nope™

1. “9/10, would pollinate”
– sent to the author

We don’t even know where to begin. Is this flattering? Disgusting? Both? Why did we lose a point? Why should we care?

What about you, collegiettes? Have you tried online dating? These messages are pretty priceless, but we bet you have some great ones of your own. Share them in the comments!

5 Creative Ways to Say ‘I Love You’ (Without Just Saying It)

$

0

Saying “I love you” to your SO is a huge, exciting and very romantic step in your relationship. But many collegiettes find themselves in relationships where the simple “I love you” while you’re out to dinner or watching a movie may not make the cut. You need a wonderful way to say it for the unique and special relationship you and your SO have. Even if you don’t have a boom box over your head or a horse-drawn carriage to sit in, you can tell your SO how much you love him or her in a heartfelt way. Whether you’ve said those words before or you aren’t ready to say them yet, there are so many ways you can show your SO you care.

1. Brew an “I love you a latté”

Show him or her how much you care with some sweet latté art. It’s an adorable way to show your SO that you’re in love.

“I've always thought it would be adorable to visit a coffee shop with your SO, get the barista to make one of those white hearts on the top of his or her coffee while he or she is waiting at a table and wait for your SO to see it,” says Ashley McDonald, a senior at Central Michigan University. “That would be the perfect way to say 'I love you.' Men need to take note of this.”

If caffeine and a heart don’t spell “I love you,” what does? And if the coffee-shop scene isn’t for you and your SO, try this one at home.

2. Plan a surprise trip for your SO

Let your SO know that you’re open to doing things that you weren’t before you started dating, especially things that your SO likes and you haven’t tried before!

“If your partner is a big ‘acts of service’ person, [see] if you can figure out a way to serve them, like scheduling a mission trip or doing something in your city, like going to a homeless shelter,” says Jay Hurt, a relationship coach and author of The 9 Tenets of a Successful Relationship. “Do something you didn’t know they are open to.”

Try planning a trip for your SO that will surprise him or her and show how committed you are to your relationship — whether you want to go to a soup kitchen, try a new roller coaster your SO loves even if you are scared of heights or take him or her on a romantic weekend getaway, your SO will know you love him or her with this sweet gesture. Find something that your SO wants to try or loves doing, and do it with him or her!

3. Give your SO a meaningful gift

Cashmere sweaters and cuff links are nice gifts, but try getting your SO something more significant when you tell him or her you’re in love.

“[See] if you’re able to give them something that really speaks to them,” Hurt says. “If they’re into fashion, and you’re able to buy her a specific Prada bag that she just happens to have been looking at and she thinks you have no idea that she’s looking at, then that’s a way to say, ‘I love you.’”

Don’t worry now that the winter holidays are over—this can apply to birthdays, anniversaries and Valentine’s Day! Small acts of kindness and cute DIY gifts are always appreciated, no matter what time of year.

4. Sing your SO’s praises

Though saying “I love you” can be an intimate, personal moment, one way to let your SO know how much you care is praising him or her in front of your friends in a natural way.

“If you’re at the beginning of a relationship and it’s the first time, and you speak really highly of your SO, that’s a way to make them really feel warm and fuzzy and loved,” Hurt says.

Laughing at your SO’s jokes, praising his or her outfit and giving him or her random compliments in front of friends can let your SO know that you’re comfortable with how amazing he or she is and you want to show it off!

5. Leave little love notes

Nothing tells your SO that you’re thinking about him or her like love notes! They are a thoughtful way to let your SO know that you care and that you’re happy you’re together.

“In the past, I've left little notes for my boyfriend where I know he won't find them for a while,” says Aja Frost, a sophomore at California Polytechnic State University. “For example, I'd hide one in a pair of his socks or in a box of cookies. The notes would usually have an inside joke or a sweet message or a drawing. I know he thought they were super cute and held on to them!”

You know your relationship is built to last, so why not let your SO know? Saying “I love you” can be one of the sweetest and best moments in a relationship — make sure that the first time you say it (and every time thereafter) is special, unique and catered to your SO!

The 11 People You See Over Break

$
0
0

During winter break, you can only sit on your couch and watch Netflix for so long. Eventually you have to go out into your hometown... which means seeing everyone you knew in high school. Great.

1. Your High School Best Friend

It’s like you never left. Plus, you don’t even need catch up since you stalk each other’s Facebooks regularly. She’s the perfect person to wear sweatpants and drink wine with when you’re feeling antisocial.

2. The Superficial Girl

You were sort of acquaintances in high school, but now every time you run into her at Starbucks, she hugs you and screams and acts like you were lifelong besties. She always asks you to catch up, but you never do.

3. The Eye-Contact Avoider

You know her. You KNOW you know her. But as soon as you make eye contact, she puts her head down and pretends you’re a stranger. It’s even better when you’re in the middle of that awkward half-wave.

4. Your (Really Cute) High School Ex-Boyfriend

You've definitely moved on, but damn, he still looks good. Somehow you still get tongue-tied when he asks how you’re doing. Maybe you should ask for his new number...

5. Your (Really Annoying) High School Ex-Boyfriend

Without fail, he texts you every break and asks to get back together. Running into him is like a bad rom-com because he’s still convinced you’re soul mates. No thanks.

6. The Party Thrower

So what you never really spoke in high school? You know he always throws house parties, so now you’re strictly drinking buddies.

7. Your Clique That Drifted Apart

Distance got the best of you, and despite coffee-date catchups, you realize you have NOTHING in common anymore. So instead of reminiscing about your high school adventures, you’re stuck in uncomfortable conversations about your classes and the weather.

8. The Hottie Hookup

He’s that one football player you had a crush on for years, but nothing ever happened. When you see him on New Year’s, you make it your goal to snag him as your midnight kiss. So what he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed? You’re doing this for your sophomore self.

9. The Complete Transformation

When you run into her at the grocery store, you barely recognize her. She went from gawky to gorgeous and now plans to drop out of school to become a full-time model. Some people just walk in the light, you know?

10. The Newlyweds

They were Prom King and Queen in high school, they went to the same college and you vaguely remember groaning at their engagement announcement on Facebook. When you run into them, you can't help but stare at the girl's ring and feel so incredibly old. What happened to "casually dating" in your twenties?

11. The Guy Who's Stuck in High School

Even though you graduated and moved onto bigger and better things, every time you run into him, he's wearing his varsity jacket and reminiscing about the good old days. It's like deja vu because he literally hasn't changed. At all.

What Did Blake Lively Name Her Baby?

Between the births of baby Gosling and baby Disick, 2014 was a big year for celebrity babies. We were sure the birth of Reign Disick was going to be the last big one for the year, but boy (or rather, girl) were fooled by none other than Blake Lively!

As it turns out, the Gossip Girl star steathily gave birth back in December near her home in Bedford, New York, though the news only broke earlier this week. Perez Hilton reports that it's a girl for Lively and her hubby Ryan Reynolds! Though there's no confirmation of the name the couple chose, a rumor is floating around that it might be Violet.

The alleged name reveal came from a tweet by an employee at the medical center where Lively gave birth, according to Racked. Just before deleting her account, user Kim Banksy tweeted, "I think I'm in trouble."

Regardless of what name the couple actually went with, we're just so happy for the blossoming family! Lively, who has always wanted a big family, told People that she's "always felt like a mama," so now that she's officially a mom, she says "I don't feel like it's a massive change."

With Ryan being one of five siblings and Lively wanting a full house, we have a feeling this baby won't be their last! One thing's for sure—this A-list couple and their (hopefully) full house will make for one very good looking family!

How to Constantly Remind People You Studied Abroad

$

Remember that time you studied abroad? Oh, how you miss it so!

But wait, it doesn’t have to be over just yet!

There are ways to relive your abroad experience every day (and to relentlessly remind everyone around you about that experience)!

You can begin each day with a croissant spread with Nutella, just like what you always ate for breakfast when you were in Paris.

Because—as you’ll tell everyone—your love for Nutella is boundless now that you’ve been to Europe.

Follow that up with a mid-morning cappuccino—even though no one in America will ever be able to master cappuccino art like those Italians!

And, of course, a day won’t be complete without the afternoon tea you’ve become accustomed to since you spent time in London.

Be sure to drink wine constantly,

as Europe has made you a wine connoisseur and wine is now a very important part of your life.

Only order foreign beer when you’re out on the town (How could you ever drink a Bud Light again after experiencing European beer?).

Once in a while, “accidentally” ask about prices in Euros instead of dollars, as in, “How many Euros does that cost?” because you’re just so used to talking about money in Euros.

And be sure to mention afterwards how great it is to not have to convert Euros to dollars anymore.

Slip some of the slang you picked up abroad into conversation, since it comes so naturally to you now.

Frequently complain about how all your shoes got ruined by those European cobblestones.

Wear that scarf you bought from a street vendor in Spain as often as possible, so when people ask where it’s from, you can say, “Oh, I got it in Europe.”

Tell everyone about how much more fun the clubs were abroad.

Complain to anyone who will listen about having to do “actual” work now that you have “real” classes again. Unlike when you were in Europe.

It may be over now but, lucky for you, you’ll always have your memories of your time abroad…

…and Instagram, so you can throwback to your abroad experience each and every Thursday with: “Ugh, missing abroad life so much! #tbt”

Wake Up to Gorgeous Hair by Sleeping in These Hairstyles

$

0

Let's face it—the start of a new semester leaves us collegiettes too busy to pull out the curlers, straighteners and waving wands every morning—not to mention, weeks of sleeping in over winter break has left us craving the extra sleep in the AM. The solution? Easy, effortless styles you can sleep in that will leave you with amazing hair when you wake up. We've rounded up our top three overnight hairstyles that will leave you looking like you spent way more time in the morning than you did. Whether you want sexy waves, over-the-top volume or serious sleekness, we've got you covered!

1. Beachy waves

To achieve undone, messy waves without having to fuss with a curling iron, start by spritzing damp hair with a texturizing spray, like the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray ($27 at Sephora). Part your hair the way you usually do and section it into two or more sections, depending on the thickness of your hair and how loose or tight you want your waves. Start braiding each section normally, from about your jawline down to avoid awkward crimps at the back of your head. Secure your braids with elastics and wake up to beautiful, beachy waves!

2. Effortless volume

If your hair tends to look flat, limp and all around lackluster, then this is the sleep-in style for you! Run a generous amount of volumizing mousse, like the Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Mousse ($4.19 at Walmart), through your hair from roots to tips, working the product in with your fingers. Throw your hair up into a loose topknot, making sure it's high enough that it won't bother you while you sleep. Gently tug at the bun to make sure it's loose—you don't want it super tight to your head! Take the bun down in the morning for fabulously touchable volume.

3. Sleek shine

To minimize the time spent combatting unruly frizz in the mornings, run a smoothing serum, like the OGX Argan Oil of Morocco Extra Penetrating Oil ($5.79 at Target), through your hair, concentrating on the ends. Comb through your hair and gather it at the base of your neck, twisting it into a low, not-too-tight bun. Secure the bun with a soft scrunchie to avoid creases and to keep a regular hair elastic from causing friction. It's also a good idea to switch out your regular cotton pillowcase with a silk or satin one, which won't tug on your hair or cause split ends. In the morning, gently let your hair down and enjoy your sleek and shiny locks.

With these foolproof overnight hairstyles you can put your styling tools away and say hello to healthier, happier, more fabulous hair—and way more free time in the mornings. Happy styling!

5 Safe Ways to Make Friends During Study Abroad

$

When we daydream of our time studying abroad, thoughts of cool foreign friends with charming accents tend to come to mind. And while making friends abroad isn’t necessarily difficult, it proves more challenging than you’d think. It’s important to get out of your comfort zone and socialize with a new pool of people, but it’s even more important to stay safe in a foreign place! Here’s your go-to guide for making friends abroad – while still staying safe.

1. Get to know your roomies

While we’d all love a single room in a lovely apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower, chances are that’s not what you’re going to get. Many study-abroad programs house you in dorms or apartments with other international students. Take advantage of all the interesting people around and make a friend within your building.

Cassidy, a junior at Emerson College who studied abroad in London, says a great way to make friends while studying abroad is starting with your roommates. “You have to live with them for the whole semester, so you might as well start getting to know them,” she says. “Plus, you never know—you might click and then you have instant friends and travel buddies.”

Cassidy says that soon after she and her roommates moved in, they started by planning a move-in dinner. “We all decided on a meal, went and bought the supplies and then all gathered in the kitchen to cook and chat,” she says. “It was a great way to get to know each other. The dinner helped us bond and also kick-started our friendship.”

Befriending a roommate/housemate/floormate is not only fun, but safe, too. The students you’re housed with went through the same (or at least similar) application process that you did in order to be accepted into the program. They most likely had to have a good personal and academic background – meaning that there likely aren’t any creeps lurking around your building.

That being said, you’re still in an unfamiliar territory, so make sure not to give out too much personal info before really getting to know your roomies! Get to know them before you go out drinking or on a big trip with them. Have dinner together or go on a grocery-shopping trip to get more familiar with them before jumping in. If you’re looking for a friend in your new home, your own residence just may be the perfect place to start!

2. Join a club

Just as we have Greek life and extracurriculars in the United States, many schools in other countries have their own clubs and organizations. Most schools in Europe have students’ unions, sports clubs and organizations based on academic interests. Do your research and figure out what your host institution has to offer, and go and check it out!

Some student unions have lounge areas or even an on-campus pub. If you have time after class and want to catch a soccer game or have a drink, consider stopping by and meeting other students. Visit the lounge or offices during your downtime to hang out between classes or catch up on what’s going on around campus.

Even if your host institution doesn’t have a union or on-campus pub, chances are there are some other places on campus to hang out! Visit the library or hang out in an academic building before class – you’re bound to run into like-minded people. Remember to consider all the opportunities available to you abroad, including the clubs and organizations that your host school may have.

To play it on the safe side, learn about your school’s options during orientation. Many programs and schools offer an orientation for all students, if not just for international students. This should give you a chance to explore the school’s organizations in a safe and inviting environment. Head to meetings with a friend and check out the different clubs your school has to offer.

3. Visit a museum

There’s no doubt that you’ll be doing some exploring abroad, so take the time to meet some people while you’re out. Museums, landmarks and other attractions can make for great social spaces and opportunities to meet new friends.

When Madison, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin, visited Paris for two weeks, she spent a good amount of time around museums. “I met so many interesting people by just sitting in a little corner within the Louvre and writing,” she says. “Many people abroad are just as curious about you as you are about them.”

Museums and similar attractions are generally safer and attract a good crowd. For the most part, they require an entrance fee and have security guards, so people won’t be entering for the wrong reasons. “[Museums are usually the kind of place] that attract smart people who would be fun to carry conversations with, and they’re often other students doing research for class!” Madison says.

There’s plenty of opportunity for conversation at a museum or similar landmark; there are constant flows of tours and students going around to discuss pieces, check out the exhibits and visit the gift shop. As long as you keep your belongings close and are aware of your surroundings, you should be safe to approach someone. If some students your age have been discussing a piece you’re interested in, don’t be afraid to join in the conversation when it feels right. If you’re itching for some more conversation, join a tour and talk with some members of your group. If you’re looking for some cultural enrichment and some like-minded friends, a local museum may be the perfect place!

4. Use the buddy system

The buddy system is an old trick that totally works. Being in a foreign place, you’re going to want to do some exploring. Landmarks, pubs, clubs, parks – they’re all important to check out when you get the chance, but some are unsafe, especially for tourists and foreigners. To ensure that you can get to know your area (and other people!) safely, have another friend tag along. This way you can bond with the friend you brought and you won’t be worried about putting yourself in danger. Chat with people at the bar or take a stroll around the city – just as long as you and your go-to friend know where each other are!

5. Participate in program activities

For those of you studying through a U.S. institution, consider checking out what your study abroad program has to offer. Many program providers have specific offices in the host country with a staff that caters to your interests. They often offer small gatherings and bigger get-togethers.

Alex, a junior at New York University, went through a separate institution to study abroad in London. She explains that both her host school and her program provider offered different trips for international students.

“I went on a weekend trip to Wales with my program,” she says. “It was awesome to be able to travel while also catching up with people I met during my program’s orientation at the beginning of the semester.”

While organizing trips and gatherings on your own can be fun, make sure you check out the opportunities that your school and/or program have to offer. These activities can be cheaper, safer and a great way to meet new friends!

Foreign places can be intimidating at times, but that doesn’t mean you should hold yourself back! You can still explore places and meet new people while staying safe in your new environment. Consider some of our tips when looking to make new friends during your time studying abroad!

The Girls Looked Great on the 'Girls' Red Carpet

As per usual, the Girls season 4 premiere red carpet was not your typical parade of red carpet looks. From Lena’s chic midi look to Zosia’s statement-making bright red dress, the cast of Girls once again did not fail to disappoint when it comes to super chic fashion inspiration. Let’s just say that if the new season is just as great as the cast’s red carpet style, we won’t be missing an episode. Keep scrolling to see our favorite looks below!

Lena Dunham

Never one to wear your average red carpet strapless floor length gown, Lena Dunham, the show’s creator and star opted for a midi length Creatures of the Wind dress with just the perfect amount of blue and green shimmer. Lena also debuted her return to a pretty chestnut brown hair color, proving she can rock any hair color, from platinum blonde, to dark brunette, to even her recent bright green.

Allison Williams

True to her feminine, polished character Marnie on Girls, Allison Williams donned a ladylike Monique Lhuillier frock with a gorgeous sparkling navy skirt. We’re loving the way she mastered the perfect balance between classic, with the strapless shape, and fashion-forward with the midi cut and smoky makeup.

Zosia Mamet

Okay, so it took us a second to recognize Zosia Mamet without her character Shoshanna’s signature sock bun—but when we did, we were totally amazed at how on-point her siren red Alexander McQueen dress looks here. We also have to admit... the grey hair is growing on us.

Jemima Kirke

For her look, Jemima Kirke went for classic, understated glamour—and it totally worked. From the slinky black silk fabric of her Adam Lippes dress to its up-to-there leg slit, Jemima totally rocked it. Major bonus points for the cute strappy heels that peeked out of her dress for the night!

Rita Wilson

Wilson, who plays Marnie’s mom on the show, took the jumpsuit route for her red carpet look. We love the way her sparkly plum-colored jumpsuit looks just as glammed up as any gown, but is still a fun twist on typical red carpet style.

Gillian Jacobs

Jacobs, who will play recurring character Mimi-Rose Howard in season 4, opted for a navy dress with orange accents and super fashion-forward cutout shoulders. Orange and navy together are totally unexpected, but Jacobs makes them work. Add super cool nude heels with floral details, and we only have one word: Chic.

Our excitement for the new season has officially reached obsessive levels. Will you be keeping up with Girls this season, collegiettes?

The 8 Timeless Rules of Style

$

Fashion is ever changing. Freshman year style definitely won’t be the same three years later, and most of our high school attire is pretty obsolete at this point. However, no matter how trendy you try to be, remember that there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed! There are always those rules of fashion that just shouldn’t be broken, no matter what year it is. We talked to image consultant Brian Maynor, who gave us his timeless rules of style.

1. Mix and match trendy and classic pieces. With the pressure to keep up with all of the latest trends, many people are under the assumption that every article of clothing they wear has to be trendy, when that’s really not the case. “It’s good to have one trendy piece if your entire outfit has those classic pieces like straight-leg jeans,” Maynor says.

2. “If you have to put ‘too’ in front of it, then it’s too much,” Maynor stresses. Too baggy, too tight, too short, too long—none of these are good.

3. Chipped nails are always a no-no. Would you go to a job interview with chipped, bright red nail polish? Of course not! So why would you go anywhere else that way? Clean nails always work in your favor, while a neutral polish is always chic. You can even brush on your favorite color as long as your nails look neat and clean. Let’s leave chipped nails in the past.

4. Tousled and unclean are two totally different things.“You can tell when someone puts their hair into a quick, loose bun and when they just throw dirty hair up,” Maynor says. Even when you don’t want to look entirely put together (we all strive for that “I just rolled out of bed, but don’t I look amazing” look, right?), make sure that you don’t look undone: a loose top and boot-cut jeans are fine as long as you don’t pile on a baggy jacket over them. In that circumstance, Maynor advises to keep your jacket fitted.

5. Fresh makeup is always best. We all have those days when we wake up super late after being out all night. Instead of pulling out the makeup remover and reapplying everything, we swipe on some fresh lipstick, grab some mascara, barely wipe off our eye shadow and rush out the door. But we shouldn’t be doing that! Maynor reminds us “you can’t touch up your makeup from the night before and make it look good.” So start from scratch for your best look!

6. Dress for your body. No, that doesn’t mean piling on layers of clothes if you’re heavier, nor does it mean wearing all fitted clothes all the time just because you’re more petite. “A lot of my clients have body image issues and they think camouflaging is covering up, but big and boxy clothes make you look big and boxy,” Maynor says. Find clothes that actually fit your body type so you look fabulous and not frumpy.

7. Always strive for balance. Showing your cleavage, your legs and your stomach is always a fashion don’t. But unless it’s winter, you don’t need to be covered up from head to toe. Try and find a comfortable balance. “If you’re wearing a low neckline, drop the hemline of your skirt,” Maynor advises.

8. Prepare for the day ahead! Remember when you were in elementary school and your mom made you pick out your clothes the night before school? Go back to those days! “Would you rather take 10 minutes at night to pick something out or be fumbling around in the dark, half asleep, trying to pick out your outfit?” Maynor says.

Trends are always changing, and with the fashion-conscious society we live in, it’s hard not to keep up. But just remember that there are always those basic rules of fashion that never go out of style. Although they might be easily forgotten when we wake up too late to do our hair or forget to take off that chipped nail polish (for the second week in a row), try to keep these timeless rules of style in mind.

UVA Brings Greek Life Back to Campus—With New Regulations

After a seven-week shut down following allegations of rape and controversy over how cases of sexual assault are handled, the University of Virginia is reinstating Greek life on campus—but with a whole new set of rules.

Fraternities will no longer be allowed to serve pre-mixed drinks or punches at events. Beer and wine can still be consumed, but only if it is opened and served by a sober brother at the bar. Fraternities will also be responsible for hiring security officers to monitor the party entrances in cases where there are more party-goers than brothers.

UVA has also demanded that at least three fraternities members remain “sober and lucid” at each function. In addition to, one sober brother must have key access to every room in the fraternity house.

Greek organizations must agree to the new terms by January 16 in order to participate in university activities. Failure to do so could jeopardize the organizations' relationship with the university.

"I believe the new safety measures recommended by the student leaders in the Greek community will help provide a safer environment for their members and guests," UVA President Teresa Sullivan said in a press release.

UVA shut down Greek social life on November 21 after Rolling Stone magazine published a scathing, but now-discredited article about an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house on the Charlottesville campus in September 2012.

UVA’s Greek leadership councils acknowledged the fact a change was needed in the Greek systems and policies. Teaming up with the university, the Inter-Fraternity Council spent the last few weeks focusing on improving safety for all students and visitors at fraternity and sorority events.

"We seek to achieve a safe environment at fraternity events by addressing high-risk drinking, sexual misconduct, and unhealthy power structures. These changes are not comprehensive—nor do they claim to be. Instead, we submit these reforms as the next step in the IFC's commitment to guaranteeing a baseline of safety for fraternity members and our guests,"the IFC said in an address toward the agreement.

While the 2012 rape allegation is still being investigated by police and the university, Greek social life will resume as students return from winter break this week for the spring semester.

8 Amazing Pick-Up Lines from 'The Bachelor' Premiere

The Bachelor is known for its wacky attention-grabbing antics, especially when the women make their first impressions stepping out of the limo. As if we ever doubted it, this week’s premiere with its introductions of the newest crop (pun intended!) of gals did not disappoint! We compiled some of the zaniest lines we heard from the ladies vying for farmer Chris Soules’ heart and just had to share them with you below. Feel free to use these the next time you need a good pick-up line. We guarantee at least a double take!

Britt

Britt’s love of hugs and compassion for giving them away landed her the first kiss of the season. We’re not sure if that’s a look of guilt for locking lips with the Bachelor the same day she met him or a sly glimpse of her competitiveness peeking through.

Best Line: “I already know I like you so I have a leg up.”

Rebuttal: Okay… but how do you know you like him? And don’t even bother with the “I watched Andi’s season” gimmick.

Whitney

The princess-voiced fertility nurse gave a classic first impression (“I would not be here if it was not you”), but she pulled out the big guns once she got her one-on-one time.

Best Line: “I make babies every day.”

Rebuttal: Wow. We’re guessing this will probably be the most controversial thing Whitney says all season. Because she’s definitely been saving that one for a while!

Kelsey

Kelsey seems like the most sane of the bunch at this point with her rom-com worthy conversation starters and her short haircut—a welcome change to the endless series of extensions we see every season!

Best Line: “I was so nervous getting out of the limo, and then I step out and I see you and suddenly I’m not so nervous anymore.”

Rebuttal: Are we the only ones who know for a fact that are nerves would be going up the closer we get to the dreamy country boy for the first time?

Tara

We bet you were just as charmed by Tara's plain Jane cowgirl getup as Chris, who allowed her to stay another week despite her drunken escapades, was. But will her transparency be enough in the long run?

Best Line: “This is me.”

Rebuttal: Actually, if we didn’t know better, we would think we’d be seeing the real you a bit later in the night. After a few too many drinks.

Amanda

While the thought behind this ruse was sweet, this secret admirer’s note read more like a ransom letter than a love note. Didn't she see the signs?

Best Line: “Chris, please turn away from the limo and close your eyes. Hugs and kisses.”

Rebuttal: Should he also gather some unmarked bills for you while he’s at it?

Nicole

If you just don’t know how to approach that cute guy you’ve been obsessing about, why not try dressing up as his favorite farm animal?

Best Line: “I wanted to ham it up for you… Plus I love pigs. Oink, oink.”

Rebuttal: This is a direct quote. Not even kidding. And now we think we’ve said enough about this situation.

Kaitlyn

Kaitlyn was hilarious from the start, even if she did lead with her most shocking joke. We think her humor will go a long way with Chris and loosen him up from the awkwardness of the Bachelor process.

Best Line: “I know you’re a farmer, and you can plow the f—k out of my field any day.”

Rebuttal: Bold? Yes. Did it need to be said? Also, yes. This was bound to come up at some point in the season, so we’re glad Kaitlyn let it fly.

Ashley S.

Where do we begin with Ashley? Can she please just stick around for the whole season, if only just to provide her vivid commentary? You have to admit she’s not totally off with her onion theory.

Best Line: “If it’s a pomegranate, then God bless it!”

Rebuttal: It may not be a pick-up line, but we’ll definitely be quoting this for the foreseeable future!

This looks like it’s going to be a fun group of ladies for Chris to choose from in one of the most dramatic seasons… sorry, we won’t delve into Chris Harrison’s territory! Which line was your favorite from the premiere? Will you be using any of these quotes as pick-up lines?

Real Live College Guy: Does He Just Want Sex or Something More?

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

I met this guy through some mutual friends, and he asked if I would help with a project he’s working on. After meeting him a couple of times to work on the project, he invited me over to dinner—just the two of us. We ate and watched a movie, and then he initiated us making out. I don't know him that well yet, so he's still quiet and hard to read. Is he just interested in sex, or could he be interested in me as a person, too? –Perplexed in Texas

Texas,

I think it’s entirely possible that he might be interested in you as a person. Do I think it’s probable? Not really, no.

More likely, he confused your generosity for flirtation and thought repeated visits meant that you were down for some fun. For some reason, some guys think that if a girl spends time with them, then she must be interested in something more. Clearly, they think, she wants to hook up. Is it a logical thought process? No. But men aren’t always creatures of logic.

The fact that you don’t know him that well and that he is “quiet and hard to read” aren’t necessarily factors here. And sure, if we were in a romantic comedy, this might end with the two of you realizing how many things you have in common and how you were always supposed to be together. That’s not the world we live in, though, and I’m pretty sure that isn’t what’s going on here.

I hate to say it, Texas, but it sounds like this guy just wanted to see if you were down with hooking up. Dinner and a movie seem like a not-so-subtle setup disguised as a “thank you” for your help, a hook-up disguised as something innocent. I say this because it’s something I’ve seen other college guys do before, and I wouldn’t put it past a hormonal dude.

This whole thing just seems too convenient to me, and the most realistic scenario is that he misunderstood your repeated help as a desire to do something more. I can’t really say I blame him because, foolishly, I’ve done the same thing.

If it’s something you’re not interested in, let him down easy. If not, have fun!

The 15 Stages of Your New Year's Resolution

New Year's is the time to reminisce about the year that has passed and make room for an even greater year to come. It's also the time to buckle down and commit to yet another New Year's resolution, aka a life improvement that we should really make, but we all know will most likely die off before March. Every year it’s the same: We start out totally pumped to get healthy/a boyfriend/a job, etc., but more often than not things don’t actually go according to plan. Here are the typical stages of your New Year's resolution.

1. This is the year when I become my best self!

2. Who needs alcohol and carbs? Not me!

3. I’m finally gonna put this gym membership to good use!

4. Running isn’t as bad as I thought it was.

5. How has it only been two weeks…

6.How am I supposed to last an entire year?!

7. Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.*

*Except pizza and chocolate and bacon and guacamole and cheese and donuts.

8. So what if I skip the gym? Napping is good for you, too.

9. Alright, maybe I’ve cheated the past few weeks, but next week I’ll get back on track.

10. I. Hate. Running.

11.I wish cheese was a vegetable.

12.HOW HAVE I GAINED A POUND?!

13. Alright, I'm gonna give this one more shot.

14.I've come to the conclusion that anyone who says they genuinely enjoy working out is a liar and/or needs therapy.

15. Maybe I’ll just make my New Year's resolution to read more or something else that doesn’t involve all this suffering…

So maybe your New Year's resolution didn’t last all year… or maybe it didn’t even last a month. But it’s the effort that counts, and hey, at least you tried, right? There’s always next year!

6 Pieces We Can Actually Borrow (Or Steal) From the Boys

$

If you're anything like us, you can probably look into a full-to-the-brim closet and still decide that you have nothing to wear. The next time this happens to you, take it as sign that you should start invading the closets of the men in your life—or even browsing the men's section the next time you go shopping! Whether it's a retro rock t-shirt, a comfy flannel or a chunky sweater, you just might find something to wear that will be a nice change of pace from your regular wardrobe!

1. Grey Textured Sweatshirt - Topman ($60)

This grunge-inspired top offers a little bit of edge to what would otherwise be a basic sweatshirt. Since it'll be loose-fitting, pair it with your favorite skinny jeans and some trendy sneakers for a super-cozy yet stylish outfit.

2. Slub Sports 2 Stripe Socks - Need Supply ($37)

If you're tired of the dainty-looking, polka-dotted, floral socks that are invading your sock drawer, try a pair of long tube socks like this knit pair instead. The heathered texture and stripes make for a preppy look, so these would look great in a pair of Hunters or a mid-calf leather boot!

3. Mountain Parka - Uniqlo ($59.60)

No longer are cargo jackets just a staple outerwear item for men! The oversized fit is a nice change from the fitted jacket that you might normally reach for. Plus, you'll definitely stay dry and cozy thanks to the parka's durability.

4. Slim-fit Soft-Wash Button Down Shirt - Banana Republic ($59.50)

Between tucking it into a pencil skirt, half tucking it into jeans or wearing it over trousers, there's so much you can do with a men's white button down. The slim-fit of this Banana Republic top will still provide a loose fit since it's a men's shirt, but it won't be so big that you're swimming in it. If you're really looking to make an outfit with this top pop, pair it with a bold statement necklace.

5. Vampire Weekend Floral Tee - Urban Outfitters ($28)

For whatever reason, women's graphic tees sometimes just aren't as cool as the ones made for men—so unfair. That's why we're giving you complete permission to snag any men's graphic tee that catches your eye. Tees like this one (repping Vampire Weekend!) are slouchy, without being too boxy. They're easy to play up with a cute skirt, or dress down with a pair of leggings.

6. Ebbet's Field Flannels Homstead Gray Ball Cap - J.Crew ($49.50)

J.Crew's line of vintage-inspired baseball caps is the perfect way to embrace a sporty look. The faded color of this cap makes it easy to pair with a simple outfit. Consider it your new go-to hat for bad hair days!

What will you be borrowing stealing from the boys this season?

1. You tear up just thinking about how much you missed your roommate over winter break, and your reunion is nothing short of movie-scene-worthy.

2. You’re actually looking forward to your first day of classes so you can show off your new outfits...

...and scope out the cuties in your new classes.

3. Syllabus week feels like Christmas came twice.

4. This is going to be the semester you get a 4.0, you can feel it!

5. Unless you worked over break or scored some major cash from your grandparents for the holidays, your wallet is probably feeling a lot lighter after fall semester.

6. You’re still going strong with your New Year’s resolutions, so you sign up for the 7 a.m. spinning class that “will be totally worth it!”

7. You meet someone who hates your history professor as much as you do and you wonder where she has been all of your life.

8. You picked out your next boyfriend on the first day of class, but you start to realize that maybe he has other ideas.

9. You thought you had rested up over winter break, but before you know it, you’re back to being a zombie.

10. One late-night pizza run later, your New Year’s diet goes down the drain.

11. Valentine’s Day can make or break the whole month of February.

12. Unless you’re lucky enough to go to a school in a warmer climate, you're debating actually moving to Mexico.

13. Summer feels SO far away... until you have to figure out a summer internship.

14. You made it to the first four weeks of spinning, so, A for effort, right?

15. All you can think about for the entire month of February is spring break...

16. ...but you realize that you may not have left yourself enough time to get the bikini body you’ve been dreaming of.

17. You expect to come back from your spring break tanner and rejuvenated, but you have a test the day you get back to school.

18. You studied for like an hour last night, so the bar sounded like a great idea. Sorry, GPA.

19. You love your roommate, but your hallmates rudely remind you of the noisiness joys of cohabitation.

20. You run out of clean clothes, laundry money and motivation. So sweatpants it is!

21. You thought you got enough family time over winter break, but you start to miss your annoying little sister. A lot.

22. Every holiday becomes a desperate excuse for celebration. St. Patrick’s Day? Absolutely! April Fool’s Day? Sure, why not?

23. And once it finally looks like this outside, you say goodbye to any productivity.

24. When summer finally comes, you never want to leave.

Have a great second semester, collegiettes!

Everything You Need to Know About the Charlie Hebdo Attack

Last updated: Friday, January 9, 2015 at 4:00 a.m. EST

On Wednesday, in an act of revenge over a provocative cartoon negatively depicting Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, gunmen stormed into the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and killed nearly an entire room of writers and editors, including Stéphane "Charb" Charbonnier, the cartoon's artist as well as several other of the magazine's most well-known cartoonists. Below, we've put together everything we know about the attack so far:

January 7

Around 11:30 a.m., two gunmen made their way to the Charlie Hebdo offices, originally heading to the wrong building (one next door) before catching cartoonist Corinne Rey keying the security code into the correct building. Dressed in all black and carrying AK-47 assault rifles, they pushed her aside and ran into the offices, killing the building's security guard and going up the stairs shouting, "Where is Charb? Where is Charb?" The gunmen came upon the editors in their early editorial meeting, gunned down Charbonnier and almost everybody else in the room, sparing only the women (though one woman did die during the attack). During and after the shooting, they were reported to have shouted phrases like, "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is Great") and "We avenged the Prophet Muhammad." In all, twelve people were killed; two police officers and 10 Charlie Hebdo employees. Eleven were injured.

Later that evening, police identified three suspects: brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi (ages 34 and 32), and Hamyd Mourad (age 18). Said's ID was found in a car that was left at the site of the shooting. Mourad turned himself into the police that night after seeing his name come up in the media. Classmates have come to his defense, saying that he is innocent and claiming he was in class at the time of the shooting.

As the world watched in dismay, many international leaders came forward to condemn the acts: French President Francois Hollande called the event a "terrorist operation," while President Obama declared the attack "outrageous" and offered his public support as an ally of France in the country's time of crisis. The French Council for the Muslim Faith also came forward to criticize the heinous attack.

January 8

The manhunt continued as France and the international community remained shocked over the event; meanwhile, early Thursday morning, a police officer was killed while another was wounded in the suburbs, only fueling the nation's fear. There was, however, no immediate connection to the previous day's events. Marine Le Pen, a far-right political leader in France, called for an "absolute refusal of radical Islamic fundamentalism," and suggested that the country bring back the death penalty, which was abolished in 1981.

#JeSuisCharlie, which translates to "I am Charlie," began trending on Twitter as social media users sent an outpouring of support and aimed to demonstrate solidarity. #JeSuisAhmed surfaced as well, recognizing French Muslim Ahmed Merabet, one of the policemen killed in the attack. President Hollande declared Thursday a day of mourning, and France held a country-wide minute of silence at noon for the victims and those affected; many held pens in the air to show support for freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and the French Council for the Muslim Faith called on French Muslims to take part in political demonstrations against the attack as well. During the night, the Eiffel Tower went dark in remembrance.

After the gunmen allegedly held up a gas station late in the morning, where they stole gas and food, police forces swarmed local villages, including the largely rural Crépy-en-Valois, where it was believed the Kouachi brothers were located in the nearby woods. As an extra precaution, the French police dispatched more than 80,000 officers to increase security. It's confirmed that a total of nine people are in police custody at this point. At this time, it appears that the gunmen are still at large.

Charlie Hebdo's lawyer claimed that despite Wednesday's attack, one million copies of the publication would be printed for next Wednesday; the magazine's typical circulation is closer to 45,000. In a joint statement, Radio France, Le Monde and France Télévisions said that they would do whatever it took to help keep Charlie Hebdo running, lending both its equipment and its staff.

Amidst discussion of what free speech means, media sites and publications were struggling with whether or not to publish the image that prompted the attack. Some, like The Daily Beast, are going as far as to call publications who don't publish the image cowardly—while others, like the Associated Press, CNN, ABC and others have either removed images or simply not posted them in the first place. The New York Times defended their decision not to publish the offending cover as a company policy.

What else do we know?

  • Charlie Hebdo is no stranger to controversy; in 2006, the magazine was threatened when it republished cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, after they were first published in Denmark. Then, in 2011, they were hit with fire bombs after publishing an issue requesting the Prophet to be a guest editor. The magazine was created after satirical magazine Hara-Kiri was banned when it mocked the death of President Charles de Gaulle and the loss of more than 100 people in a discotheque fire in 1970. Hara-Kiri's editors came together to create Charlie Hebdo.
  • Both the Kouachi brothers are French citizens. They are listed in the U.S. database for suspected international terrorists as well as hold places on the no-fly list. It's unclear which, but at least one of the brothers spent time in Syria in the past year, and one was in Yemen sometime in 2005. Their parents died when they were still young.
  • Cherif, the younger brother, has been linked to terrorism (and spent time in jail for it) in the past, with an arrest in 2005 at age 22 for attempting to travel to Iraq during the war. He later became a student of radical Muslim preacher Farid Benyettou and in the following years faced arrest again in connection to various terrorist activity; in one case, he never ended up going to jail as he ended up serving enough time in pre-trial detention and in the other, the charges were dropped.
  • Said, the older brother, seems to have had weapons and possibly bomb-making training from al Queda. He has never, however, been convicted of a crime.

This incident has much larger implications than the unnecessary loss of life. The freedom of the press has been threatened as a result of this attack, since those who were targeted were the journalists utilizing satire to make political statements. Unfortunately, this is reflective of a larger issue regarding the targeting of journalists and the repression of information and free expression.

The number of journalists who have been killed worldwide has risen from 44 in 1992 to 74 in 2012 and 70 in 2013.
