The season of sweaters is fast approaching, and with it comes endless choices of cute, cuddly and super-stylish autumn outfits. Fall is also perfect season for picturesque dates: Think hayrides, pumpkin picking and so much more. Check out these outfit ideas for our all-time favorite fall dates.

1. Going to a Pumpkin Patch

Going to a Pumpkin Patch

Charlotte Russe brown boots

VILA infinity scarve
$25 - vila.com

What better way to spend an afternoon with your campus cutie than to go to a pumpkin patch in the heart of fall? When planning your outfit for this type of date, be sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind potentially getting dirty or scuffed, as you’ll be perusing a patch for the perfect pumpkin and, if you’re lucky, even joining your date on a hayride or two!

For this kind of outing, we suggest a comfy and warm ensemble, such as leggings, boots and an oversized knit sweater. This look is low-key, simple and, most importantly, cozy. What more could you ask for when going pumpkin picking? Throw on a rose-gold watch and a knitted infinity scarf, and you’re good to go! Imagine you and your SO snuggling close together in your warm fall sweaters as you pick out the perfect pumpkin to carve—speaking of, perfect second date idea, right?

2. Apple Picking

Apple picking is an adorable date activity that promises totally Instagram-worthy pictures for you and your SO. This means it’s time to break out your favorite stylish fall pieces that are good for an extended walk through an apple orchard. Preparing for this type of date also means you get to play around with fall colors!

To achieve the perfect balance of simple shades and a pop of fall color on your apple-picking date, we suggest a chambray shirt and a pair of black jeans. A burgundy beanie and a similarly colored pair of boot socks tucked in a pair of tan, short booties are great options to spice up a low-key outfit. Feeling chilly? Try a vegan suede jacket. Together, this outfit is the perfect mix of charming accessories and outdoorsy fashion—perfect for an afternoon spent apple picking.

3. Hitting Up a Haunted House

Hitting Up A Haunted House

A haunted house is an autumn classic and can be a fun but casual evening date. Dressing warmly is not only a must for this late-night date, but also allows you to finally break out that adorable peacoat you’ve been wanting to wear all summer! Other fall classics like riding boots, colorful jeans and sheer, collared shirts are all great pieces for a cute, style-savvy outfit for this festive date.

4. Study Date

Fall season means school is back in full swing. Sure, that means homework and tests, but it also means you have another shot at a study date in the library with the cutie you’ve been crushing on. Keep your clothes somewhat casual; you don’t want your study partner to think you expect him or her to take you out for dinner right then and there! Some cute yet uncomplicated outfit ideas include a simple cardigan over a knit dress along with complementing fall-colored tights and a pair of super-cute ballet flats. Just think of how cozy you'll feel in this outfit, coffee cup in hand, going over your lab notes with your campus cutie!

5. Walking Through the Foliage

Fall goes by quickly, so be sure to make the most of the outdoors before winter hits. If you and your SO or brand-new crush are unsure of what to plan for your next date, suggest a nature walk! Whether you go to a state park or blaze your own trail through the woods, a walk is a simple way to enjoy the magical colors that fall brings (and the fashion it calls for!). Plus, a nature walk is the perfect time to experiment with layering.

Some great go-tos for this romantic date include burgundy booties, a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and a vintage-inspired collared sweater. Add more to this look by throwing on a cream-colored scarf, a long cardigan and a pushed-down pair of socks. Layered to perfection, this outfit will make you pop against the fall leaves, and your crush won’t be able to look away!

If you’re looking to get in the mood for Halloween, there’s no better way than to spend a Friday night than watching horror films with your favorite cutie. If you’re looking to look your best and you’re on a budget, consider our favorite fall staple: a shirtdress. A shirtdress is versatile, so it's a great option for a collegiette looking to get the most from her money. It's perfect for a Halloween movie marathon with your SO because it’s flirty yet elegant, cute yet comfy and basically screams, "Cuddle me!" Grab your favorite festive flicks and look forward to some cuddling!

While we’re sure you’re hard at work planning your perfect costume, don’t forget that, at least in our minds, Halloween is really a month-long holiday. Though you may not want to dress up as Tinkerbell every day this month, you can definitely ease Halloween-themed items into your October wardrobe. These clothes, shoes and accessories are ones that you can wear all year—not just when the ghouls and goblins are out to play. Check them out below!

1. Teeny Skull Ring

Ring, $7.99, Etsy

This adorably tiny ring will amp up your October scare factor…without being too gory. After Halloweekend has come and gone, you can keep it wrapped around your finger. Skulls are chic, after all!

2. Purrfect Prints

Tank, $29, Urban Outfitters

Wear this muscle tank as an ironic costume (“I’m a cat. Duh.”) on All Hallow’s Eve and to your 9 AM chem class. Cats are cool any month of the year. Plus, this particular tee is an excellent conversation starter—chem cuties: come one, come all.

3. Scary Sweater

Sweater, $49.99, ModCloth

No doubt about it, this cozy sweater will incite some fright during the Halloween season. After October 31st, wear it to a late autumn bonfire or while you’re studying with your girlfriends. Studying = death? Just us?

4. Kitty Cat Ears

Cat ears, $13.33, ASOS

Cat ears are having a moment! Just ask Ariana Grande. Wear yours as a sexy kitty on Halloween, and then the rest of the year as an out-of-the-box accessory. They’re unique and chic—meeeow!

5. See No Evil (Eye)

Necklace, $48, Bauble Bar

Keep evil spirits at bay with this chic necklace, courtesy of Bauble Bar. Sure, it’ll be a great addition to your Halloween gear, but it's a statement piece you can wear with virtually any outfit. It’s a necklace you can rock whether it’s October or July.

Heidi Klum's 8 Craziest Halloween Costumes

$

Though Halloween may be the one night a year that we can get away with simply accessorizing lingerie with animal ears, former Victoria's Secret model and Queen of Halloween Heidi Klum is known to go the extra mile with her elaborate getups.  From scary and spooky to straight-up kooky, here are Heidi Klum’s eight craziest Halloween costumes.

1. Lady Godiva, 2001

Klum arrived at her 2001 party on horseback in a floor-length wig as the famousy nude Lady Godiva.

2. Witch, 2004

Klum’s creative take on the classic witch costume involved an all-red ensemble and a skeleton on piggyback.

3. Vampire, 2005

In a light-up corset, custom-made fangs and a cobweb cape, Klum killed it as a vampire at her sixth annual Halloween bash.

4. Forbidden Fruit, 2006

Refusing to let pregnancy stop her from going all out at her 2006 Halloween bash, Klum hid her baby bump in her Garden of Eden forbidden fruit getup.

5. Hindu Goddess, 2008

Klum’s most controversial costume was when she dressed up as the Hindu Goddess Kali.  Her portrayal of the benevolent deity with vampire fangs and a bloody skirt upset Hindu leaders.

6. Crow, 2009

Feathered and fabulous, Klum attended her 10th annual Halloween event in an elaborate crow costume.

7. Alien Transformer, 2010

At eight feet tall, Klum towered over her guests at her 2010 Halloween Party at Lavo in NYC.

8. "Visible Woman," 2011

Klum's anatomy-inspired ensemble involved a body suit painted with muscles, veins and tendons, and was completed with an entrance on a stretcher at the Tao Nightclub in Vegas.

9. Old Lady, 2013

Even while wearing a gray wig, serious prosthetic spide veins and some mega-detailed wrinkles, Klum still looks amazing in this crazy-elaborate getup.

Klum will be holding her 15th annual Halloween event this year, and we're sure the Halloween Queen will blow us away yet again!

The Next Big Thing in Nail Polish Storage

    $

After moving from New York to Miami, Katharine Contag was unpacking her boxes of nail polish when she decided storage for her polishes needed an improvement. She began searching blogger's websites and online retailers, but was shocked that she couldn't find anything. So she went to Joanne's Fabrics, got her own supplies, and put together a storage box fit for her needs. Thus, the Color Clutch was born.

"The Color Clutch is for someone who is tired of taking up all of their shelf space and rifling through all of their colors to find a polish," says Contag. With two options in the signature robin's egg blue, users can store their polish compactly on a shelf (18-bottle box) or take it on the go (8-bottle case). The foam inside holds every size and shape of polish, and the box's clear front allows for easy visibility. The travel case even has a pouch for all of your manicure tools!

Check out Contag's Kickstarter, where you can donate—and score your own Color Clutches! After meeting Kickstarter sales goals, Contag hopes to retail on other sites and eventually in stores such as Sephora and Birchbox. In the future she is hoping to expand product assortment into storage for other beauty supplies by asking women what needs they feel could still be met.

"It's a great price point," Contag states, "and an easy solution to be organized." I don't know about you, but I know I hate rifling through all of my polishes to find the color I want. So head on over to Kickstarter and check out the Color Clutch for an easy, cute, space-saving solution to nail polish storage!

The mornings and evenings are so frigid that you can literally feel the hair growing on your freshly shaved legs (ugh) while sunny afternoons have you wondering “is it still summer?” It’s enough to make anyone want to call it quits and move to California. If you already live in Cali, then good for you. We want your lives.

Okay, so indecisive weather is totally messing with our outfits. How do you dress when the low temperature is projected to be 50 degrees while the high is 75? You wear socks with sandals, that’s how.

Stop scoffing. We’re not kidding. Sure, the socks-and-sandals look is generally attributed to unfashionable tourists and soccer coaches, but like anything that's so ugly it’s pretty, it has become a trend. This is real life people! We can’t make this stuff up! Wearing socks with sandals can be totally chic if you pair it the right way, as countless designers have convinced us in recent runway shows. If Mary Kate and Ashley can do it, then gosh darn it, so can we!

Just make sure to avoid trying this with Keens. Those bad boys are hopeless.

Her Story: My Sister was Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Her Thirties

    $

“I have stage three breast cancer.” This was the last call I was expecting from my older sister, Reyna, as I was enjoying a delicious caramel apple from the street fair at the University of Oregon. I thought about the times she’d often complained half jokingly about her absurd and at times, comical problem with her breasts’ lactating at random. We had always laughed along with her stories, but had also always persuaded her to get them checked out.

She had let three years pass since she first noticed abnormalities; by then she was a 34-year-old restaurant manager in Chicago, living her life vigorously and remaining unaware of the deadly health risks she was facing. It was only after she noticed a large lump under her left nipple that she recognized the extremity of the situation and finally headed to the doctor. What started out as a sunny day in May had turned into everyone’s worst nightmare.

My sister Reyna was adopted from Oaxaca, Mexico and has always had incredibly tough skin. She was always the last person you wanted on your bad side, but the first person you wanted backing you up when you needed it. We knew that Reyna was young enough and strong enough to fight this horrible monster that continues to affect one in 8 women in the U.S. according to breastcancer.org, but once we learned it was stage three, we all held our breaths and filled our thoughts with prayers. As a 19-year-old student finishing my first year of college and simultaneously managing a big break-up, I was extremely overwhelmed.

I knew that, regardless of personal issues and final exams, I needed to be there for my big sister, and I was determined to help her through this. An old friend of Reyna's created a Facebook page where friends and family could follow her fight, calling it “Reyna’s Kickin’ Cancer’s Ass Page”—a perfect way to sum up Reyna’s attitude towards the diagnosis. Here, words of support and constant updates were made that allowed Reyna to have an immediate support system even though she was in Chicago and thousands of miles away from her family on the West Coast.

Reyna’s breast cancer was one of the most terrifying things that has ever happened to our family, but it was also one of the most beautiful things to see how much love and support she had along the way through all of the positive posts on the Facebook page. It began with shirts that everyone would sign wishing her luck and posters or cards of all shapes and sizes flowing in from every part of the country. Some supporters were dear friends, but others were complete strangers who simply wanted to wish her the best in her challenging road to health. One of my favorite gifts that Reyna received during this time was a large pin button she wore that read, “I had chemo today, what’s your excuse?”  It was a perfect representation of the fearless and determined attitude that my brave older sister maintained throughout her treatment.

Such sincere positivity helped to encourage my sister daily and put endless smiles on her face even in the face of illness. From her pink designer hospital gown to her non-stop party girl spirit still rocking it with my brother at multiple Chicago Cubs games throughout it all, Reyna was an inspiration to everybody, even the other patients in the hospital

Despite the heavy diagnosis and the time Reyna spent in the hospital, the moment when it hit us just how real this was, was when chemotherapy began. During this time, Reyna was losing her hair, her breasts, her physical strength; she was scared, as anybody would be. She was scared of the outcome, scared of the process and scared of the changes that were happening and would continue to happen to her body daily.

Even so, Reyna's positive attitude never faltered, though she struggled with having to change her life from the normalcy of working and playing to now dedicating everything to her healing and to her survival. She continued to work for as long as she could, and stayed social whenever she felt up to it; she was convinced that a few margaritas here and there could only be killing more bad germs…plus it made her pain seem a little more bearable. Overall, Reyna felt hopeful. As for me, I just wished I could have been closer to her throughout it all. It wasn't enough talking on the phone and hearing her try to still laugh it off and assure me that she was fine. I knew she wasn't fine; how could she be, when she was undergoing treatment that was leaving her nauseous, exhausted, weak and, even if she tried to hide it from me, scared? Though she was brave, there is only so much smiling you can do as you slowly lose your hair, your eyelashes and your appetite.

Even before her cancer diagnosis, my older sister was a huge role model to me, but watching her undergo so much pain—both physically and emotionally—and seeing her smile even after shaving her gorgeous head of hair at such a young age, truly helped me to gain a more appreciative perspective on life. Just because we are young and privileged never means that we can take even one day for granted. The fear of losing a sister, a daughter or a best friend brought all of Reyna’s loved ones closer to her, and she was able to rekindle and strengthen lost friendships along the way. Continuously losing things and in return gaining others was an ongoing theme throughout Reyna’s year-long chemotherapy process. She would lose her work and social life, but would gain the support of an entire community. She would lose her white blood cells, but she would gain a greater appreciation for her life. She would lose her boobies (as she called them), but in the end would eventually have her health back. Most importantly with her health came a million positive stories and unforgettable friends who she met along the way.

The loyalty of Reyna’s friends and family during the process was astounding, and as she became bald, so did many of her male friends! As she also became comfortable with her “new do”—she acquired a large collection of beautiful hats and head wraps to model. This girl could truly take one of the worst circumstances and transform it into a comedy show for us all to laugh at alongside her.

It is now nearing October 2014, and my beautiful big sister has been cancer free for almost two years.  She received a bilateral mastectomy, a procedure that removes all breast tissue that could potentially develop cancer, and is something most women who’ve been diagnosed will choose to do in hopes of avoiding future disease. She now is the proud owner of some truly stunning new boobies! She recently moved to California to be with the rest of our family and she still continues to tell her story with a smile on her face and boxing gloves on her hands.

Since Reyna’s experience with breast cancer, I know that I, as well as the women in our lives, have become much more aware of doing self-examinations as well as supporting those battling their own fights all over. My family has participated in various walk for the cure events, played in golf tournaments supporting breast cancer awareness (my mom even has a pink bag and balls) and this past year did a breast cancer snowshoe in honor of my sister. We continue to rock our "We Heart Boobies" bracelets and stickers and will continue to participate in any breast cancer events that can help people like Reyna win their fight. We are lucky to have our Reynie still with us today, and we can all look up to her as a hero. According to Reyna, “CANCER, YOU PICKED THE WRONG B*TCH!”

Ask a Collegiette: How to Balance Being an Intern & a Student

    $
    0
    0

Are you a smart and savvy pre-collegiette looking for answers to some of your most personal questions about college? You know, the ones about boys, classes, roommates and parties that your school’s guidance office can’t help you with? Jen is here to answer those questions! Whatever your concern, she’ll do her best to help you so you can make sure you don’t just survive college, but rock it!

What's your best advice for managing internships and class loads? –Rachel

    Rachel,

Let me start off by saying that you most likely won’t need to worry about managing internships and homework together for at least your second semester of college, so try not to stress too much about it just yet! Your first year of college will mostly be for getting a grasp on what you want to study and navigating what it’s like to be out of high school. Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to binge watch Orange Is the New Black on Netflix in the meantime before you head full throttle into an internship.

When it comes to internships, every program is different, even if they’re all within the same field. In my case, I’ve had internships and writing positions with nine different websites, and each has held a very different standard of guidelines for what they expect. Due to this, I researched and got a feel for each publication before I began working hands-on with them regularly. I’d suggest the same for you; look for an internship that will challenge you, but will also respect your responsibilities as a student with other classes and commitments.

Looking at the big picture, I think a few simple and general points to remember when trying to balance everything are these rules: Take time to rest and relax, work hard but also have fun (since you’re only in college for so long) and make sure you’re willing to give your best effort to your internship. Remember back in the day on The Hills when LC and Whitney were working as interns at Teen Vogue? They excelled at their internship because they loved that industry and were willing to work hard and make sacrifices in order to be there, and it shined through. It won’t benefit you much to get an internship you don’t care about “just to have one,” since the quality of your work will be poor if you don’t want to put forth the effort. So if that means that you have to wait until a little later in your college career to get an internship, do so in order to be more successful.

Another point to remember is that everyone struggles with finding a proper balance between his or her personal and social life, internships and homework. It’s almost as if it comes in waves: There are seasons when it’s easy to figure out how to handle all of your responsibilities, and other times when it seems impossible. It’s easy to just throw in the towel and ugly cry when these moments come along, but you have to remember that you’re stronger than whatever it is that is causing you to be stressed.

I suggest purchasing a planner or figuring out another way to keep yourself organized, since doing so is one of the best ways to make sure you’re maintaining balance in your schedule. This will let you write down what you’re doing and when so you can be in control of what’s happening. It also forces you to practice good time-management skills, which will be super helpful throughout your college career (and beyond!).

A second idea is to make an inspiration board with photos and quotes to keep you motivated during the stressful times in the semester. This could mean photos of Beyoncé to help you feel fierce and ***flawless, or a picture of Kim Kardashian crying or Britney in 2007 to remind yourself that you will get through all your semester throws at you – they did it, and so can you!

Don’t forget that college is designed to prepare you for what your career will be like, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re having trouble finding a balance between everything at first. Just like you learn and grow academically in college, give yourself room to do the same personally, too. Learning how to master your internships and gaining essential time-management skills will allow you to feel more confident and in control of your future, which is looking super bright!

17 Sexy Halloween Costumes for 2014

    $
    0
    0

If you love to show a little skin on Halloween, here’s your go-to list of ideas for keeping your seductive edge this year. Whether you choose a tried-and-true, stereotypical costume with a new twist or a costume that's classy with a hint of allure, get ready to turn heads this fall!

    1. SWAT Team
 Member

Dressing up as a police officer is pretty overdone, so take it to the next level and be a badass SWAT team member. Wear all black, add some high boots and criss-cross black belts around your hips. Get a cute white T-shirt (perhaps under a black jacket or vest) and draw “SWAT” across the chest. Add a Nerf or Airsoft gun, and you’re ready for action!

2. Rebel Angel

You don’t have to choose between wings or horns! Be the best of both by dressing as an angel who joined the “dark side,” so to speak. You can decide how much angel and how much devil to add to this costume. Dress in a classic white dress but add a studded belt and heavy makeup, or wear a slinky red or black dress with some wings and a halo!

    3. 1920s Flapper

Channel The Great Gatsby in this classic and classy outfit! Your best bet is to check out a local thrift store for a vintage dress. The necessary accessories to complete this ensemble are layers of pearls, a thin-brimmed hat adorned with a brooch or flowers and some comfortable, low heels for dancing like it’s the Jazz Age.

    4. Librarian

An argyle sweater with a short skirt and heels? A plaid skirt with a thin, airy blouse? The sexy librarian is at the juxtaposition of nerdy and mysterious. Make geek chic with some classy frames, a simple but classy pencil skirt and some “a-little-too-high” heels. You can carry a book or two with your clutch (Etsy actually has a bunch of clutches that look like books!) to complete the look.

    5. Huntress

Channel your inner Katniss Everdeen just in time for the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 release with a sexy huntress costume. Pair a hooded capelet with a pair of high-heeled boots, tights and a simple dress. Don't forget to complete the look with your bow and arrow!

    6. Goddess

Be better than the toga. Take the overdone goddess look and try something more original. Instead of the classic unnamed Roman goddess decked out in white, do your research and pick a specific deity to embody. Explore Celtic, Norse and Hindu mythology. Be Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, or Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of luck. For her Halloween party in 2008, Victoria’s Secret model Heidi Klum went all out for her costume, transforming herself into the 10-armed goddess of death, Kali. It was a frightening look, but she rocked it!

    7. Cavewoman

Use The Flintstones as inspiration for a sexy cavewoman look. Shred the hem of your old leopard-print dress to create that tattered, prehistoric look. Pair it with a fuzzy vest, a club, and even a bone necklace and you'll be ready to (bed)rock!

    8. Girl Scout

You're never too old for Girl Scout cookies. Pair a green jumper with a white T-shirt and tights, and add a sash, a green cap and a neckerchief to complete the look. Bring along some Thin Mints if you're looking to make some new friends, too.

    9. Convict

Haven't you heard that orange is the new black? Get an old orange dress and paint the word "Guilty" on the back. Complete the look with some handcuffs, a pair of black boots and your own personal placard. Get ready to take some mug shots!

    10. Madonna

We don’t mean Madonna today, we mean this Madonna of the 1980s. The music video for “Like a Virgin” is chock-full of trademark Madonna fashion, from the black cutout dress paired with bright blue leather leggings to the over-the-top lacy white bridal gown.

    11.

Painter

Get artsy this Halloween. Buy a plain white tank and a matching white baseball cap to splatter with different colors of paint. Pair the two with some jean shorts, suspenders and your paint-splattered brush to carry around for the night. Instant work of art!

    12. Lioness

Possibly the most overdone sexy costume, the cat costume can vary from latex-clad Catwoman to furry ears and a tail. If you want to be an animal, dress up as a tiger and be a sexy Hobbes!

    13. Disney Heroines

There are so many to choose from, yet the classic princesses like Cinderella and Belle tend to be done more for Halloween. It’s a shame, because some of the non-princess Disney heroinesm like Megara from Hercules and Wendy from Peter Pan, are just as sexy, if not more so! Instead of being the 50th collegiette dressed as Jasmine, layer yourself in bright colors and scarves and bring the gypsy flair of Esmeralda, or don a slinky purple dress and channel your inner Megara.

    14. Victoria's Secret Angel

If you’re not comfortable heading out the door in just lingerie (and we don’t blame you!), opt for the slightly tamer but still-sexy VS angel robe costume. All you need is a lacy black bra and a pink silk robe. Loosen the robe so your bra peeks through a bit, and don’t forget those signature Victoria’s Secret beachy waves! The best part? You can totally pair this look with flip-flops!

    15. “Trashy”

Make yourself a dress out of a trash bag. All you need is a pair of scissors!

    16. Franzia

Go as everyone’s favorite affordable beverage by rocking a plastic “bag of wine” mini skirt and wearing a dress underneath in the color of your favorite Franzia flavor. Bonus points for carrying around actual Franzia all night!

    17. Hot Sauce

Get a few of your best girlfriends together and go as different types of hot sauce (mild, hot and fire). All you need is a minidress in yellow, orange or red and some felt letters. Add some flirty sayings, and you’re good to go!

#ManiMonday Sorority Edition: Kappa Alpha Theta

Last week, you saw how to do your own Delta Gamma nail art. This time, I'm showing you an easy and cute mani for all you Kappa Alpha Theta girls!

Theta's colors are black and gold, so I used Sally Hansen Black Out ($2.86) and Nina Big Spender ($3.99). You'll also need a wedge makeup sponge ($1.99), a toothpick and a paper plate.

Start out by creating the base for your manicure. Paint your ring finger with gold polish and the rest of your nails with black.

Next we're going to create an ombre effect so that our nails fade from black to gold. To do this paint a line of black and gold polish right next to each other on the paper plate, so that the lines touch. Dip your makeup sponge into the paint like I did below.

Gently stamp the sponge onto your nail. To create a better ombré move the sponge slightly towards the tip of your nail and then slightly toward the cuticle, alternating a tiny bit each time you stamp. This will improve the gradient effect so a harsh line isn't separating the colors.

Do this on the remaining nails, skipping your ring finger. Don't worry if your nails and fingers look like mine do—the mess is hard to prevent. You can try to avoid getting the polish on your skin by taking small pieces of tape and placing them on the skin around the nails before starting the ombré, but personally I find that too time-consuming!

Create a kite on your ring finger using the black polish and a toothpick. Draw a small diamond, fill it in, and create the kite's tail.

To clean up the maniucre take a cotton swab and dip it in nail polish remover. Carfeully wipe away the polish around your nails.

Top off your mani with a clear topcoat, as always, for long-lasting color and shine. This will also help smooth the ombré and blend the colors together.

Enjoy your manicure, Theta ladies! Be sure to check back next week for our next sorority nail art installment!

7 Myths About Safe Sex, Debunked

    $
    0
    0

Thanks to our high school health class, that awkward birds-and-bees talk with our parents, certain sex-obsessed magazines and, of course, plenty of discussions with our friends, we definitely know the basics of safe intercourse. Such as: Wearing two condoms is not twice as effective as wearing one; hot tubs don’t stop the sperm from “swimming upstream,” so to speak; and the pull-out method is a far-from-foolproof method of avoiding pregnancy.

However, collegiettes, we’re the first to admit that there’s always more to learn. And unlike some of the more esoteric college courses we’ve taken—“Punctuation of the Middle Ages,” anyone?—everything we discover about this domain is pretty relevant to life. So let’s start separating sex fact from fiction.

Myth #1: It’s impossible to get pregnant while you’re on your period

Just because it’s Shark Week doesn’t mean the chance of creating some guppies doesn’t exist. It’s a smaller chance than usual, yes, but that’s no reason to skip the condom and/or birth control.

“Not every woman’s periods are particularly regular, so if she has irregular bleeding, she may not be ovulating and bleeding in a consistent pattern,” says Dr. Jennifer Robinson, an OB/GYN and assistant professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “It’s possible that she may be bleeding even if she’s recently ovulated, in which case she is still at risk for getting pregnant.”

Quick recap: Ovulation occurs during the menstrual cycle when one of the ovaries releases an egg. The egg enters the fallopian tube and is available to be fertilized by sperm, if any sperm are present. If it’s not fertilized, you shed your uterine lining and get your period. The possibility of pregnancy is highest during ovulation.

All women ovulate at different times, so if your period overlaps with the beginning of ovulation, then you’re in Fertile Crescent territory. In addition, since sperm can stay alive for up to five days in your reproductive tract, having sex near the end of your period can lead to egg fertilization after your period is over.

Myth #2: You’ve only slept with virgins, so there’s no way you have an STD

Here’s the problem. Many people consider themselves virgins until they’ve had vaginal intercourse, even if they have participated in oral and/or anal sex… but oral and anal sex can both put you at risk for sexually transmitted diseases.

“One example of an STD that can be transmitted through oral or anal sex is HSV, or herpes,” Dr. Robinson says. “Herpes is a very common viral infection that can even be passed among families just through kissing or sharing cups, so it’s possible someone could have oral herpes without ever having been sexually active.”

There are also other ways of contracting an STD without having sex, like injecting oneself with a shared IV (hugs, not drugs, please). And, unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for people to lie about their sexual histories.

The bottom line? If you’re having sex with someone, it doesn’t matter whether or not he or she is a virgin—you should both get tested for STDs.

Myth #3: You should get your first Pap smear when you turn 18

In the past, your 18th birthday came with the freedom to enlist, vote and buy lottery tickets—and a recommendation from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that you get a Pap smear. Pap smears look in your cervix (the lower part of your womb) for cancers or cells that might become cancerous if not treated correctly. They’re the best way of preventing cervical cancer—woohoo!

“It’s really important that women get Pap smears routinely, because the type of changes that can eventually turn into cancer are very slow-growing, so it’s possible to pick up on very early changes and treat them before the cancer becomes full-blown,” Dr. Robinson says.

However, Dr. Robinson says most doctors recommend you get your first one at age 21.

“Even if a young and healthy [teenage] woman already has changes in the cervix, the vast majority are resolved by her immune system and are not a problem,” she says. “Plus, some of the treatments for abnormal Pap smears can potentially have an effect on future fertility, so that’s [why] we like to avoid treating Pap smears pre-emptively when women are young before they’ve had a chance to have the families they’d want.”

After you’re 21, you should get a Pap smear once every three years and visit your gynecologist every year.

Myth #4: Birth control pills make you gain weight

Who hasn’t heard this one? Please, collegiettes, don’t let it be the deciding factor in whether or not you go on birth control. In 2013, researchers from the Cochrane Fertility Regulation Group did a study of 52 birth control methods and didn’t find any indication that BC leads to weight gain.

In fact, a 2011 study tracked around 500 15- to 19-year-old girls over several years and found that while all of the teenagers gained some weight, the ones who used birth control pills gained less weight than those who didn’t.

“The doses of both estrogen and progestin in birth control pills have been steadily decreasing since the pills were invented in the ‘50s, so they’re much, much lower doses now than what they used to be,” Dr. Robinson says. Sixty-some years ago, the hormone doses could undoubtedly have been strong enough to cause increased appetite and fluid retention.

What do you undoubtedly gain when you use birth control? A decreased risk of pregnancy.

Myth #5: Douching helps you clean your vagina

Ladies, let’s trust our va-jay-jays. Unlike our dorm rooms, our vaginas are self-cleansing, so washing or cleaning out the vagina with a water-fluid mixture (i.e., douching) is unnecessary. In fact, it’s not recommended! According to Dr. Robinson, the vagina is home, sweet home to lots of natural bacteria, which help it maintain a healthy, balanced environment. If you douche, you’re forcing change on that environment, which can cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria, leading to a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

Douching doesn’t protect you against STDs or pregnancies—actually, Dr. Robinson says it can push semen farther up into the vagina and cervix, thus increasing your chances of pregnancy.

“Also, when cervical mucous is thin and watery, it’s much easier for sperm to swim through it,” she says. “When it’s thick and sticky, it’s much harder. Douches tend to wash away some of that mucous and make it easier for sperm to swim through to the uterus.”

However, Dr. Robinson wouldn’t recommend using douching as a method of increasing your chances of getting pregnant, since depending on the type of douching material, it can also kill off your sperm. If douching sounds like a precarious thing to mess with, well, it is!

So let’s put a ban on douches of the male and drugstore variety. If you want to wash the outside of your nether regions, Dr. Robinson suggests using warm water and unscented soap.

Myth #6: The morning-after pill aborts an existing pregnancy

Let’s just get this out there: If you’re already pregnant when you take Plan B, ella or another form of emergency contraception, the pill will have no effect. That’s because it delays or stops ovulation (remember, when the egg is released?), so if your egg has already come down the pipeline (err, the fallopian tube), entered the uterus and been fertilized by sperm, then Plan B won’t change that.

“If you were about to ovulate, it would push back the date of ovulation for a couple of days so the presence of sperm and the presence of egg were mistimed,” Dr. Robinson says. “The definition of an abortion is disrupting an established pregnancy that has implanted in the uterus—neither Plan B One-Step or ella will cause that.”

However, there is a type of emergency contraception you can use for up to five days after sex that can prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg or a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. It’s called a Copper T IUD. IUDs, or intrauterine devices, are 99 percent effective in reducing the risk of pregnancy, whereas emergency contraceptive pills are about 88 percent effective. Many women use IUDs as their regular birth control method (you can keep it in for up to 12 years!).

“If someone came to me and said, ‘I had unprotected sex yesterday, I really don’t want to be pregnant and I want really quick birth control going forward,’ I’d offer them a Copper-T IUD,” Dr. Robinson says.

Check out this article on IUDs to learn more.

There is also an “abortion pill,” or medicine you take that terminates an existing pregnancy. It’s also known as mifepristone or RU-486 and can be taken up to nine weeks after the first day of a woman’s last period. This medication is 97 percent effective, can be taken at home, costs $300 to $800 and is available at select Planned Parenthood centers, clinics and private health care providers.

Myth #7: If you get the HPV shot, you’re safe from cervical cancer

Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is so common that almost every sexually active person gets it during his or her lifetime. You contract it by having oral, vaginal or anal sex with someone who has the virus. In most cases, HPV goes away on its own, but if it doesn’t, it can lead to genital warts or cervical cancer.

Fortunately, we have two vaccines that protect against most of the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer: Gardasil (tell us you didn’t just mentally shout, “I wanna be… one less!”) and Cervarix. (Gardasil also does cool stuff like prevent the HPV types responsible for most genital warts as well as some cancers of the vagina, anus and vulva.)

But receiving either of the two vaccines doesn’t mean you’re HPV-proof. They don’t protect against around 30 percent of cervical cancers, so that every-three-years Pap smear? Keep getting it! Also, Gardasil and Cervarix don’t prevent you from getting other sexually transmitted infections, so that condom? Keep using it!

When it comes to safe sex, what you don’t know can hurt you. Luckily, we’ve got your back. Have fun, and, not to go all Mom on you, but stay safe, collegiettes!

How to ‘Lean In’ the Right Way

    $
    0
    0

You’ve probably heard of Sheryl Sandberg’s groundbreaking book, Lean In. Maybe you’ve even read it. Obviously, at Her Campus we’re all for women pursuing their ambitions and getting ahead in their careers. But for recent graduates, a well-meaning attempt to “lean in” can come off as ungrateful or inexperienced and even burn bridges. As it turns out, trying too hard to get ahead in your career could actually be hurting you! Read on for four ways to lean in the right way.

    1. Negotiating your salary

    Too far

You just graduated from college, and you get your first job offer. Congrats! The HR manager also tells you the salary you’ll receive. You know you’re supposed to negotiate, so you let HR know you were really hoping for a higher salary and come back to her with a counteroffer for what you think you deserve. She tells you that she can’t meet your request, and you end up settling for the original offer. What went wrong?

The biggest mistake you made was not having the reasoning to back up why you deserve a bigger paycheck. Not only did you lose the salary you were looking for, but you may have also come off as unprofessional.

Though Christine Sliwicki, a management consultant for Daniels Consulting Group, says that although “negotiating is a must” and that women should always negotiate their first salary, the idea that you should negotiate isn’t reason enough to ask for a higher salary.

“People can get in trouble when they ask for [more money] and don’t provide the support or specific reasoning for their request,” says Lesley Mitler, President of Priority Candidates, Inc, a career coaching service for recent graduates. Mitler says there’s a difference between asking for more responsibility (and with it, higher pay) rather than earning it.

    Just right

Instead of just giving HR a number, be prepared to explain what your previous qualifications are and how will be an asset to the company.

“Go into the negotiation with specific reasons about why you deserve more money,” Mitler says. “Make it fact-based and not emotional.”

This means going in not with a story about how much you need the money to pay off student loans, but rather with examples of your past experience, proven leadership and education—as well as how they all benefit the company. You should also do your research and have a picture of what salaries people are earning in comparable positions both in and out of the company; you can find this information on a site like Glassdoor. This will give you an idea for what an acceptable amount to ask for is, but don’t use it as the sole reason for why you should be making more money—just because somebody else at your level is making a certain amount isn’t a justification for how much you should be making.

Maggie Barber, who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014 and now works as an assistant buyer at a department store, negotiated her salary for her current (and first) job. “At first, I was surprised at just how uncomfortable the idea of asking for more money made me, but I reminded myself that the worst they could say was no,” she says. “The HR manager said how much she respected me for asking but could not grant my request. I was disappointed at first but felt proud that I would never have to look back and wonder what would have happened if I had asked for more.”

Negotiating a salary isn’t always easy for women. As we read in Lean In, society generally expects men to negotiate, so no one reacts adversely when they do so. Women, on the other hand, are expected to be collaborative, so both men and women can react negatively to women who try to negotiate.

The strategy that Lean In recommends is using communal language and focusing on the team instead of on yourself as an individual. For example, instead of saying, “I deserve a higher salary because I have an advanced degree in this field,” try, “My advanced degree will benefit the team in X, Y and Z ways, so I feel I deserve a higher salary.”

For Maggie, asking for a higher salary actually ended up working out in her favor; the HR manager called her back the next day and offered her a relocation compensation package. Though it wasn’t the salary increase she was looking for, it was compensation she might not have received otherwise.

    2. Contributing in meetings

    Too far

You walk into a meeting and you sit at the table along with all the higher-ranking employees, and start contributing to every question the CEO poses. You did well, right?

Well, you’re off to a good start by sitting at the table, but you may have taken it too far by speaking up a little too much.

“The biggest mistake you can make is trying to verbally contribute just for the sake of talking,” Sliwicki says. “I have seen too many people (at all levels) say things without thinking or just to talk to show they are present.”

Also, be sure you don’t sit at the head of the table unless told to. That’s usually reserved for the highest-level official (but if that’s you, then own that place, girl!).

    Just right

Lean In encourages women to walk into meetings confidently and, when appropriate—every office may have a different etiquette—sit at the table instead of off to the side. You should raise your hand and contribute to the discussion whenever you have something important to say rather than offering your opinion on everything. Be sure to always be the one to answer questions when they are about an assignment that you’re in charge of.

Pay attention, make thoughtful contributions to the conversation and use meetings as an opportunity to learn, Sliwicki advises. And if you’re nervous, remind yourself that everyone at that meeting was starting out once, too.

    3. Finding a mentor

    Too far

You probably already know that having a mentor can be extremely beneficial throughout your career. A mentor is someone you can go to for career advice, someone you can bounce ideas off of (whether it’s about a specific project you’re working on or something more general) or even someone who might help you score job opportunities. So when you click with a senior-level woman at your office, you walk into her office one day and blurt out, “Will you be my mentor?”

Though you have the right idea, Lean In tells us never to ask the question upfront, because, “if you have to ask the question, the answer is probably, ‘no.’”

Sliwicki says, “Any time I was assigned a mentor or mentee, I found it did not work out. Either we did not have a good connection, we didn’t know each other or we did not have time to get to know each other.”

    Just right

Let the process happen naturally. Keep in mind that your mentor doesn’t necessarily need to be someone who works in the same office as you do; it can be a former boss, somebody you met during a past internship, an older alumna in your field or even someone you connected with at a networking event. Whoever it may be, this should be someone you feel comfortable going to with career questions and even personal questions about moving to a new city or going to graduate school.

So when you find a woman (or a man!) you connect well with, just keep up the relationship. Send periodical emails (every mentor-mentee relationship is different, but aim for one email every two to four months) or get coffee regularly with this person. At some point, you’ll realize that this person is acting as your mentor even if you never had to pop the question.

If you don’t have a mentor figure by the time you graduate college and start your career, don’t feel like you have to force a relationship for the sake of having a mentor. Continue to build relationships with the people around you, and over time a mentorship will develop.

But don’t stop once you’ve found one person to be your mentor. Mitler recommends having multiple people whom you can consult. “There is no reason to have just one mentor,” she says. Instead, connect with as many people as you can—everybody has different experiences that have shaped their perspectives about the industry and the career world in general, and it would benefit you to learn from these different views and opinions.

    4. Planning your future

    Not far enough

As a graduette, you may have a good idea of what you want your life to look like in 10 years. Whether you’re aiming for a senior-level position or are hoping to settle down with a family (or both!), it’s important not to let your ideal image of the future negatively affect the decisions you make in your career now.

Lean In says that too many women “turn down projects, don’t apply for promotions or choose more flexible paths—all to make room for children they don’t have yet, in many cases with partners they’ve not yet met.” You might have met the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and you’re trying to make plans for your future together—maybe you’ve even talked about marriage and kids. At work, your boss announces there’s a new position opening up and asks if you’re interested in being considered for it. You know this would require longer hours and more traveling, and, given what’s going on in your personal life, you anticipate that you might not be able to take on the new responsibilities later on. So you decide to stay where you are.

Unless you already have concrete plans that will definitely keep you out of the office, you don’t know what exactly the future brings. So, as Lean In says, “don’t leave before you leave”—as in, don’t make career decisions based on what you think might happen in the future.

    Just right

Rather than anticipate potential changes, keep going full speed ahead in your career until the moment you’re directly faced with a life change. This means you should continue to take on new responsibilities and aim for promotions and raises, even if you think somewhere down the line, you’ll be faced with changes that could affect the direction of your career.

“It’s so important in your career and in life overall to live in the present,” Sliwicki says.

Though it’s important to recognize when you’re leaning in too far or not enough, remember that if you’re leaning in at all, you’ve at least put yourself on the right track. Too many women aren’t leaning in at all, so you’ve made the first step—now’s the time to refine how you go about it in the workplace to maintain professionalism while being proactive about getting ahead!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is “being true to yourself, thoughtful, respectful and honest,” Sliwicki says. “Everyone can have differing opinions on being ‘aggressive’—do not focus on if you are being too aggressive or not. Focus on connecting with people, listening and respecting others’ opinions, offering your knowledge and dedication and the value you can bring.”

How She Got There: Harpreet Kaur, Founder of Pree Brulee

    Name: Harpreet Kaur
    Age: 29
Job Title and Description: Founder of Pree Brulee
    College/Major: University of St. Thomas/History
    Website: www.preebrulee.com
    Twitter Handle: @PreeBrulee

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Harpreet Kaur: Delegating everything! But there is really no such thing as a typical day at our studio. Mornings begin with looking over at all of our correspondence accounts and sitting down with my team and strategizing the day ahead. Orders come in by the hour and while the packaging and customer service team are busy taking care of all the shipments, I usually am coordinating product shoots in our warehouse studio.

Since launching our clothing line this past spring, photo shoots take place almost daily and it's an exciting challenge to have those fresh products up on the website within 48 hours. From the beginning, our orders have included personalized thank you notes and regardless of how busy we are, my team has been directed to still add that little personal touch which our customers truly appreciate. Finalizing purchases from our designers is exciting and we are constantly researching what our customers love most and trying to bring the styles that really speak to them. Every day is different and that makes it very exciting.

What is the best part of your job?

HK: Oh, everything! Going into the studio each day as if it were the first, meeting new designers and being able to work with creative minds, making new friends with the various people that represent us, making lasting connections with our customers and just helping make women feel beautiful each day.

I also get to let loose my creative spirit which is empowering. I am constantly working on making our brand more beautiful, affordable and enjoyable for our customers. It's amazing to see my ideas come to life. And I am constantly surrounded by beautiful jewelry and clothes, so it's really amazing to come to work each day and very hard to leave at night!

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

HK: This perhaps would come as a surprise, but prior to Pree Brulée I had just been a full-time student and volunteer with different organizations on- and off-campus. And I believe all the things I learned in college, spending extra hours conversing with professors about varied topics, taught me many important things that are constantly included in my work life.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

HK: There is a lot of planning and work that goes into making a company successful and you must choose the right people to represent your brand. Every little detail matters and building a team that is inclusive of hardworking, creative and caring people who understand your vision is absolutely imperative. You can't build a skyscraper with a faulty foundation!

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

There have been many people whom I have met that have given guidance and support that it's hard to pick just one person. My incredibly talented friends have been a source of constant support and encouragement. My dad is a seasoned businessman so whatever business acumen I possess it is thanks to him. When my fiancé, who was a successful petroleum engineer, joined Pree Brulée full-time, it gave me an incredible impetus to keep working even harder and realize what a beautiful opportunity I have to be able to run this company.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

HK: So hard top mention just one! But one of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain: "20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, dream, discover."

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

HK: Realizing that mistakes happen and one must learn from them and move on quickly and not make the same one twice! There have been many unknowns with how fast Pree Brulée grows daily but I've always tried to not steer away from any difficulties. Accomplish even the most mundane task with steadfastness and make use of all opportunities that come your way, big or small.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

HK: There have been so many surreal moments! From being featured in several national magazines to now having our own studio and warehouse space, to styling entire bridal parties (which I consider such an honor!) it has been quite a journey. And to think all this has happened in just two and a half years, I cannot wait to see where the next two and a half years will lead.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

HK: They have to be passionate about the work they do at Pree Brûlée. They must be resourceful, honest and be able to come up with solutions if problems arise and also care deeply about the company. And we have a very important unwritten rule at the studio which is that bad attitudes in the studio are a no-no. Being around pleasant people makes work extra enjoyable for everyone.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

HK: If you have a dream, invent ways to make it come true! The results are worth 20-hour work days and all of the endless delegating. Improvise if you don't have all the tools available in the beginning to make your vision come alive. And don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Lasting success takes time, patience, hard work and lots of coffee.

Lively and Reynolds met back in 2011 on the set of The Green Lantern, according toUs Weekly. They wed in an intimate southern ceremony in 2012 and have since been living in Bedford, New York.

Though Lively has done a pretty good job at staying out of the spotlight since she got married, she has made a few appearances here and there, including a reunion brunch last month with her fellow Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants cast members. But she sure fooled us with this one! From what we were able to see in paparazzi shots in New York City last month, Lively showed no signs of a baby bump (at least, as far as we could tell). Now, however, the Gossip Girl star is showing and glowing! We'd be glowing too, if we knew we were about to give birth to possibly the most beautiful and talented baby to grace the earth (because come on, with parents like these, what could go wrong?).

While details about how far along Lively is (or if it’s soon enough to tell if it’s a boy or girl) remain unknown, we know one thing is for certain: this baby will be one of the best-looking celebrity babies to date. Who do you think will be cuter, collegiettes: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' offspring, or Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling's baby? Here's hoping they're besties!

5 Signs Your Relationship Is Built to Last

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether or not you and your significant other are on the same page about how serious your relationship is. You can’t rely on your Facebook relationship status to sum up how you feel about each other! You may have had “the talk” already, but how serious is your commitment to each other?

Getting signals from your partner may be confusing and leave you wondering if you’ll have a future together. Look for these signs that you two are in it for the long haul!

    1. You want to be with each other 24/7

You and your partner are attached at the hip, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Being inseparable from your significant other is a positive sign that things are getting more serious. Making time for each other even if it means giving up other things is proof that you not only want to be in each other’s lives; you need to be in each other’s lives.

According to relationship expert Dr. Seth Meyers, “The best way to determine that the relationship is getting more serious is when you feel that the two of you are establishing a true bond where you need each other and help each other feel better when either of you is upset.”

    2. Your partner drops hints about the future

Talking in future tense is an encouraging sign that you and your SO are looking towards the future. “If you've been dating someone exclusively for several months and they mention future plans for living together and so forth, it's safe to assume that your partner truly wants to invest in the future of your relationship together,” Dr. Meyers says.

Referring to your potential plans as “when” instead of “if” implies that you’re both confident about the future and can see each other in it. The next time your SO talks about future living arrangements or career opportunities, pay close attention to see if you might be a part of that.

    3. You’ve stuck it out together

The length of time you’ve been together is a great indicator of how serious things are. “You have broken some of those early-dating hurdles: You've passed the one-month mark, the three-month mark, the six-month mark and so on,” Dr. Meyers says.

It may seem like an obvious sign, but since you’ve already been through a lot together, there’s a good chance your relationship will evolve even more. If your relationship still feels fresh and exciting, you two are likely to have a long road ahead.

    4. You’re willing to make it work no matter what

Schedules, distance, work and many other obstacles can put a damper on your relationship. It’s when you make the commitment to always make time for each other that you know the relationship has gotten serious.

Rachel Petty, a sophomore at James Madison University, has felt her relationship become more serious even though it’s long distance. “My boyfriend goes to school in Rhode Island and I go to school in Virginia, so I knew it was getting serious when we decided to be long distance,” she says. “We spend the time and money to visit each other, so I know we're in for real.”

Putting in the time and effort to maintain a relationship from separate places shows a new level of commitment.

    5. You can be yourself around your SO — no pressure

Who says you have to always dress to impress? When there are no secrets and you don’t feel the need to be fully made up in front of your SO, that’s a good sign.

“When I felt like I didn’t have to wear makeup around my boyfriend, that’s when I felt less pressure and realized we liked one another for real reasons,” says Elizabeth Stiller, a junior at Michigan State University. “When you can be vulnerable with the other person, that’s when it feels real.”

Feeling comfortable enough to hang around each other in sweatpants is actually pretty important.

If you see these signs in your relationship, you and your SO are likely in it for the long haul! Congrats on finding someone pretty amazing.
