Winter is here and the classic holiday festivities are back in action. Santa's village, ice skating, lighted botanical gardens — the complete holiday works are in full swing for a fun and festive season with loved ones. Crossing the holiday season with your significant other is like a right of passage. You almost have to do the ice skating, cookie decorating and binge-watching of Lifetime holiday movies to really test the bonds of your relationship.

Now, I love ice skating as much as the next person, and these Christmas town dates are absolutely traditional, but I've done all of that before with my partner. What else is there to do? I began looking into some non-traditional holiday date ideas to break the typical holiday date pattern. Here's my list of nontraditional, yet festive, holiday date ideas.

1. Head on a (mini) road trip

Pick a spot just outside of town. Grab a bite and maybe stay the night if you'd like but just drive, blast Christmas music and spend some quality time with one another. I have a favorite pizza place I love that's about an hour and a half out of town. It's a perfect little day trip.

2. Podcast and chill

Podcasts are a hit and miss crowd and let me tell you, I was a miss for a while until I stumbled upon some REALLY good freakin' podcasts. They're like audio books. Hop in the car, go grab some hot chocolate, and find a spot that you can park for a while. Maybe that's 5 miles up the road, maybe it's literally in your driveway. Bring blankets and maybe a snack. Sip on your hot chocolate together and enjoy the story coming out of your speakers. My two favorite podcasts recently are Dr. Death and Dirty John. Not very Christmasy but have a really good storyline.

3. Wine down and wind down

The holidays have us all crazy so why not take a moment to just be. Create a little meditation station with fuzzy blankets, candles, and pillows. Turn off all of your electronics (except the device you'll be using for your meditation) and let the meditation take you through a journey. Relational meditation can allow couples to feel more vulnerable in each others presence leading to more open communication, increased honesty, and a less frantic approach to life. Afterward, wind down with a glass of wine. Share some stories, and find something out about one another that maybe you didn't know before.

4. Run in a holiday-themed marathon

There are so many races that capitalize on the Christmas season. Let's burn off those calories before we put them back on this holiday season. Get your rear in gear and dress the mart to the MAX. Afterward, you can celebrate with some fresh baked gingerbread cookies.

5. Make a homemade meal together

The world is your oyster. This is a no judge zone. If you're feeling really creative, try making your own pizza with some crazy toppings. If you want mushrooms on a white sauce pizza with peppermint and mustard, no one can stop you. Be sure to write down what you use, who knows, if it's tasty enough it could become a holiday tradition for you.

6. Become hot chocolate critics

You always hear about how people have a favorite hot chocolate spot they only visit during the holidays because their hot chocolate is just THE BEST. Well, it's time to find your own hot chocolate hub. Try a new café in the area of an unexpected chain store that serves hot chocolate. Buy a cup to split and find your favorite one!

Holiday dates are always fun, but if you're looking for something that's not so cliché, then try something a little out-of-the-box this holiday season. Who knows: you might start your very own holiday tradition with your boo!

7 Holiday Songs You Can Now Put on Repeat

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s basically Christmas! For those of us who are outrageously festive during the holidays, or even for those who don’t mind hearing a Christmas song or two, while trying to navigate the crowded aisles at the mall while shopping for the perfect gifts, here are seven holiday songs that you can now appropriately put on repeat.

1. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey

This forever-catchy tune is a favorite that stays on repeat every single holiday season. Complete with jingle bells and festive-sounding instruments accompanying old-school Mariah’s extraordinary vocals, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a message about how much she wants her Christmas bae, and we have all the feels.

Perfect for: decorating the Christmas tree with your significant other—so cute!

2. "Mistletoe" by Justin Bieber

Your teenage Christmas was not complete unless you had listened to this endearing ballad at least 10 times while wishing that you were the one kissing Justin Bieber under the mistletoe. Justin’s soft and passionate voice in this song might make you cry if you're single during cuffing season. And if you’re already cuffed, it’ll make you feel extra butterflies in your stomach thinking about your special someone.

Perfect for: cuddling with your bae while watching a holiday flick.

3. "Santa Tell Me" by Ariana Grande

This mid-tempo bop is relatable AF this holiday season. In this cute song, Ariana Grande begs Santa not to play any more games with her heart, with lyrics such as, “Santa, tell me if you’re really there, don’t make me fall in love again if he won’t be here next year.” A girl doesn’t have time to waste on boys going into the new year!

Perfect for: blasting during a holiday onesie party with your best girl friends!

4. "Last Christmas" by Wham!

In this heartbreaking 1980’s classic, Wham! reflects on how they gave their all to someone last Christmas, but got slapped in the face with rejection. The synth-filled track, complete with jingle bells, adds to the secondhand heartache that you might feel while listening to this song.

Perfect for: when you realize that the trash ex you were with last year did not deserve your love at all.

5. "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" by NSYNC

Let’s bring it back to the early '90s with a bubblegum pop Christmas song from NSYNC! In this tune, the boys showcase their ability to beautifully harmonize about uniting during the holidays and celebrating with our loved ones. At the end of the song, a choir joins them in singing and reminds listeners that the holidays are about who you spend them with.

Perfect for: blasting at a family reunion when everyone is in great spirits!

6. "Baby, It’s Cold Outside" by Idina Menzel and Michael Buble

Idina Menzel and Michael Buble could not have made “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” sound any better—the melding of two amazing vocalists and an old-time feel behind this tune touches your heart and will make you want to spend a warm, cozy Christmas in New York City with your crush.

Perfect for: when you’re daydreaming about ice skating at Rockefeller Center with your boo.

7. "Winter Wonderland" by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga

Another fantastic, old-fashioned cover of a holiday favorite, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga take their singing to a whole other level with a dramatic rendition of “Winter Wonderland." This feel-good song will have you wanting to dance in the snow with a cutie this holiday season!

Perfect for: dancing in your cute Christmas dress like nobody’s watching.

‘SpongeBob SquarePants' Creator Stephen Hillenburg Dead at 57

If you asked teenagers who grew up in the early 2000s what their favorite show was, a huge chunk of them would probably say SpongeBob SquarePants. And if SpongeBob SquarePants wasn’t their favorite, it was probably a close second.

On Monday, after nearly two decades and over 250 episodes, the show’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg, sadly passedd away at the age of 57 due to complications from ALS, which he was diagnosed with last March.

Hillenburg started his career as a marine biology teacher at what is now the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. He began writing and illustrating stories for his students which would eventually became the characters we now all know and love on SpongeBob. Hillenburg was able to combine his artistic skills and love for the ocean. He eventually turned both of his passions into an animation career.

He began working at Nickelodeon in 1993 on Rocko’s Modern Life, and soon created the first episode of SpongeBob which aired on May 1, 1999.

For almost two decades, Hillenburg’s work with Nickelodeon has brought laughter and joy onto the televisions screens of young children, adults and even college students.

“Steve imbued SpongeBob SquarePants with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of kids and families everywhere," Nickelodeon said in a statement. "His utterly original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will long stand as a reminder of the value of optimism, friendship and the limitless power of imagination.”

Many of his fans have taken to Twitter to commemorate Hillenburg, his work and the impact that he left on their lives.

Hillenburg will be missed by not only fans of SpongeBob SquarePants, but also by thousands of comedians, animators, cartoonists, and others who look up to him for the impact that he’s had on the animation industry.

Christine Blasey Ford Donates GoFundMe Money To Survivors Of Sexual Assault

Christine Blasey Ford made a statement on her GoFundMe page that she will be donating all extra funds from the fundraiser to support trauma survivors after the page raised over $647,610 in just two months. The page was originally started to help cover costs of “security, housing, transportation and other related expenses” leading up to her testimony during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court hearings.

Ford made the decision to no longer accept donations on the page after the outpouring of support that exceeded her initial goal of $150,000. “Your donations have allowed us to take reasonable steps to protect ourselves against frightening threats, including physical protection and security for me and my family, and to enhance the security for our home,” Ford said in an updated statement on the GoFundMe.

“Although coming forward was terrifying, and caused disruption to our lives, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to fulfill my civic duty,” Ford said. “Having done so, I am in awe of the many women and men who have written me to share similar life experiences, and now have bravely shared their experience with friends and family, many for the first time.”

This statement comes after Ford has remained largely silent about Kavanaugh’s confirmation and her life after the testimony.

According to The Huffington Post, Ford is still receiving threats weeks after Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.

How to Make Your Dating App Conversations More Interesting

Online dating can be intimidating and a little overwhelming. Sometimes it feels like your matches are only a lost connection, and other times you simply don’t know how to continue a conversation. It’s normal to feel this way, especially if you’re new to the online dating game, but there’s no need to overthink chatting with a new match because holding an interesting conversation is a lot easier than you think. Here are some tips to make those first few messages more intriguing.

Fill your profile with conversation starters.

Look at this as the pre-party to the main event – rope them in and hype them up to get to know you better! Add photos and a bio that really show who you are and display the qualities you’re most proud of. You may look smokin’ in the five selfies you picked out, but they don’t say enough about how much you love Harry Potter or spent the summer volunteering abroad. What about a photo from your family’s ski trip in Vermont? Or the one you and your friends took at the Post Malone concert? A photo with your pet is always a good idea. Maybe even throw in a meme as one of your pictures, which is always a relatable talking point.

Having a diverse assortment of photos creates more opportunities for those first few messages to feel more personal. And if one topic in your chat begins to feel dull, it means you have other thought starters at the ready to jump to next.

Ask them about something in their profile.

You know the conversation will have a slow start when the first message starts with “Hey, what’s up?” It leads to the predictable stream of a ping-ponging lackluster messages back and forth:

“Nothing much, wbu?”

“Same, just working on some homework.”

“That sucks.”

“Yeah lol.”

You get it. Get creative and be specific! Ask them the story behind their selfie with a camel, or about one of the tattoos they have. And if there's absolutely nothing in their profile that can serve as a conversation starter, fall back on get-to-know-you questions that anyone could answer.

Start with simple questions like “What’s your major?” and “Where are you from?” and work your way up to slightly more personal questions. Ask if they have any pets, what their favorite movie is, what kind of music they like, and so on. This is an easy way to learn what you have in common and keeps the conversation going. If you can feel the conversation begin to dull, don’t be afraid to switch the topic to something more exciting. Even if it’s as radical as “Have you ever had any paranormal experiences?” it’s much better than “what are you up to?” And if they show these positive texting behaviors, then you’re doing it right.

Get flirty with GIFs.

Honestly, GIFs are rad and they can be used as an opener. Tinder and Bumble both have a variety of GIF options to choose from, ranging from flirty to funny to weird. Choose what you feel is right! J

ust remember that they can be interpreted differently. To quote an experience from my roommate, “One time a guy sent me a GIF of a cat as a first message, so I replied with another GIF of a cat sticking his head under a running faucet because I thought it was cute. But then he asked, ‘Is that a sexual innuendo?’ I didn’t know how to reply, so I didn’t.” It can go either way, so be prepared. Also, remember to switch to a real conversation eventually because you don’t want to drag out GIF-play for too long.

Related: 4 Texts Guys Send When They're Not Interested

Don’t overdo it with the emojis.

A laughing emoji and an “LOL” here or there is totally fine and encouraged because it lets the other person know that you’re enjoying the conversation. But an obnoxious amount gives off an artificial impression.

“If he uses a lot of emojis, I just assume he doesn’t know what else to say,” says Heather Leger, senior at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. “If a guy is being very extra about it, I would probably be like, alright, this isn’t going anywhere because he doesn’t know how to talk to me over text.” Look at emojis as a spice to add to the conversation– a little adds flavor, but too much can ruin it.

Avoid one word replies.

Chatting through texts or DMs is already tough because you can’t read the other person’s body language. One word responses give the other person the impression that they’re not worth your time and the conversation will die fast. As a busy student, it may be hard to find time in your day to give a thorough reply or say something witty.

Instead sending brief, vague messages throughout the day, it may be better to wait until you have downtime to really put effort into talking, even if that means your message is a paragraph long. It shows the other person you’re taking them seriously and are not using them as a filler when you’re bored or just have a minute to spare. They should understand that you’re a busy babe trying their best to find balance between school, work and dating. Odds are, they are too.

Use proper grammar, but still be conversational.

You Are Ross Geller GIF

We’re not in high school anymore. Try to avoid acronyms and do properly spell out words like“you” instead of “u,” “are” instead of “r,” and so on. Even if you’re just looking for some fun, don’t hide your intelligence! As an English major, poor grammar and multiple spelling errors are a huge turn off for me. I want to feel like I’m talking to someone who is taking the conversation seriously, and a “how r u doing 2day?” message just doesn't come off as compelling to me anymore.

The most important thing to remember when online dating is to be yourself. It’s your chance to express yourself and decide if this other person could be an ideal match to meet IRL. If you both feel a connection, try to plan a date (sooner rather than later) and see where things go from there, because messaging can only sustain a relationship for so long.

Calling All Covinsky Fans — A 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before' Sequel Is in the Works

It’s been a few months since To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before hit Netflix and made us instantly fall in love with Peter Kavinsky and want to be best friends with Lara Jean Covey. The moment we finished watching the movie, we have all been dying to have a sequel. Well, it looks like our dreams might be coming true, as it appears a TATBILB sequel is in the works.

On November 27th, TATBILB director, Susan Johnson, seemed to confirm that Covey and Kavinsky will be reuniting on our screens in the near future. In a Instagram post, Johnson shared a photo of a Collider article that reported the news of the sequel, captioning it,  “Well, the cat’s out of the bag! Thanks for the support, everyone!!! It’s all you!”

Earlier in the day, The Hollywood Reporter shared that a sequel is “one of the first movies being discussed” between Paramount Pictures and Netflix as part of their multi-picture deal.

via Awesomeness Films

A representative from Netflix did tell Teen Vogue, however, that the sequel has not been finalized and is still in the discussion stage. “The sequel is not confirmed, we are purely in discussions,” the representative said.

But Johnson's previous comments about a potential sequel seem like the movie will likely happen.

“Relationships are hard to navigate and they’ll find themselves in one. And they’ll discover what the next person might bring in John Ambrose McClaren,” Johnson told E! News back in August.

“We’re so invested in Peter and Lara Jean, that seeing them go through struggles is going to be hard but also something everybody can relate to,” she added. “The next shiny face comes in and you’re like, ‘Oh shoot, this guy’s really nice too. What do I do?’”

Plus, there is definitely more material to create movies based on, considering TATBILB author Jenny Han wrote a trilogy, including P.S. I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean.

Not to mention, our favorite cast members — AKA Lana Condor and Noah Centineo — seem pretty stoked about the idea of a sequel.

Just days ago at the Vulture Festival, Condor talked about a sequel, saying, “The whole cast would love to do it.”

While at the premiere of Sierra Burgess Is a Loser in August, Centino told Varietythat the entire cast was hoping for a second film.

“All I know is that every single person involved in the making of that film wants a sequel,” Centineo said. “We’ve all talked about it in depth. I’ll do as many as they want me!”

But until Netflix gives the official word, we’ll definitely be keeping our fingers crossed for the sequel.

Active Shooter Alert Sent Out By Mistake Caused Panic at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

An active shooter drill gone wrong sparked panic, prompting a lockdown for about an hour on Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, along with conflicting messages from officials about whether the whole incident was actually a drill or not.

According to ABC News, military police tweeted out an alert around 2:15 p.m. about a possible active shooter, and were searching buildings. Police swarmed the medical center, as its gates closed and people were asked to shelter in place. Loudspeakers outside of Naval Support Activity Bethesda broadcast that the situation was not a drill.

It wasn’t until 3 p.m. that the Department of Defense confirmed that it had only been a drill. The exercise had been mistaken as an actual threat and personnel had initiated the emergency procedures, Buzzfeed News reports.

Lt. Col. Audricia Harris, a spokesperson for the Department of Defense, said the event was an “exercise,” and a Navy spokesperson said it was an “ad hoc drill by tenant command.”

In a statement, the U.S. Navy said the incident was “the result of the improper use of a mass notification system by a tenant command aboard the installation.”

“While preparing for an upcoming drill, the notification system was inadvertently enacted without containing the words “EXERCISE” or “DRILL.” Individuals who saw the mass notification statement immediately notified NSA Bethesda security, where they responded accordingly and instituted an installation-wide active shooter response,” the statement said. “On further investigation, they determined that the improper use of the system was the root cause and secured from the active-shooter response.”

Mary Lock, a nurse at Walter Reed told the Associated Press the loudspeaker kept repeating “Active shooter, this is not a drill,” as she waited during the lockdown for about an hour.

Katherine Bomkamp and her husband, who is a Marine, were in the pediatric exam room with their two-year-old daughter when they began to hear the announcement about the active shooter, and nurses rushed them and other families into an occupational therapy room.

“We realized one of the doors in the room didn't lock, so my husband stood in front of the door with another man,” Bomkamp told BuzzFeed News.

When they heard voices in the hallway, which turned out to be police, Bomkamp said they “dove over the kids” to protect them. “The terror was extremely real. We were all on the phone with loved ones, trying to get text messages through.”

U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland was at Walter Reed during the active shooter confusion, and spent the duration of the lockdown in a conference room with approximately 40 other individuals. At no point was there any indication that the incident was just a drill, he said, and people were treating the event as an actual threat, ABC News reports.

“People were scared and upset. Drills are important and today was a valuable learning experience for me, but training exercises must be properly communicated,” Ruppersberger wrote on Twitter. “I will be following up to see what went wrong and how the process can be improved for the future. I’d like to thank law enforcement for their quick and professional response.”

HC Wake-Up Call: Former Employee Says Facebook Has a Black People Problem, Trump Threatens to Cut GM Subsidies & Trump Admin Asks Court to Enforce Asylum Restrictions

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Former Facebook Employee Says the Social Media Giant Has a “Black People Problem”

In a 2,500 word internal memo released publicly on Tuesday, former Facebook employee Mark Luckie says racial discrimination is very real at the social media giant’s Silicon Valley campus and on its platform. “Facebook has a black people problem,” Luckie wrote.

Luckie, who, according to Buzzfeed News, served as a strategic partner manager for global influencers, focusing on underrepresented voices, shared the memo with Facebook management and employees earlier this month. In it he writes that the lack of representation of black people and their inability to speak up for themselves directly affects how black people are treated on the platform.

“I wish I didn't have to write it. I was determined to stay there and build,” Luckie told USA TODAY in an interview Tuesday. “I had to write what all the black employees are saying and feeling and we don’t feel empowered to speak up about.”

“I know from being inside Facebook that Facebook doesn’t take any action against the bad things that it has done unless it’s held publicly accountable,” Luckie added. “I don’t want to say I felt a responsibility, but I guess I felt an ability to speak on behalf of all of these black employees.”

In his memo, Luckie says that Facebook’s diversity and inclusion efforts are shallow. “It is not enough to simply hire people to focus on diversity,” Luckie wrote. “Everyone on teams whose work focuses on varied cultural backgrounds should be responsible for ensuring the outcome of their work is representative of those groups,” adding that black employees often felt compelled to “volunteer their input for projects that involve race in some way.”

Luckie describes the isolation that he and other fellow employees felt. “In some buildings, there are more ‘Black Lives Matter’ posters than there are actual black people,” he wrote. “Black employees are commonly told ‘I didn’t know black people worked at Facebook.’”

He adds that black employees were called “hostile or aggressive” by managers for sharing their thoughts, with some employees being dissuaded by managers from being involved with internal group for black employees or from doing “black stuff,” USA TODAY reports.

Employees recounted times where they were “aggressively accosted” by campus security, and that numerous times each day, a Facebook employee would clutch their wallet tight when walking past Luckie.

Luckie describes his frustrations with how the social media platform “disenfranchises” its black users. “Their content is removed without notice. Accounts are suspended indefinitely despite them often not violating Facebook’s terms of service,” he said of when individuals report Black Lives Matter pages or other pages as hate speech.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Facebook spokesperson Anthony Harrison  said, “Over the last few years, we’ve been working diligently to increase the range of perspectives among those who build our products and serve the people who use them throughout the world. The growth in representation of people from more diverse groups, working in many different functions across the company, is a key driver of our ability to succeed. We want to fully support all employees when there are issues reported and when there may be micro-behaviors that add up. We are going to keep doing all we can to be a truly inclusive company.”

Luckie noted that he believes Facebook has the ability to “positively impact the world,” but he has “lost the will and the desire to advocate on behalf of Facebook.”

President Trump Considering Cutting GM Subsidies After Layoff & Plant Closure Announcement

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is considering cutting off government subsidies in response to General Motors’ announcement that it will be closing down North American plants and eliminating thousands of jobs.

“Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. Nothing being closed in Mexico & China. The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including....” Trump wrote in a tweet on Tuesday.

“....for electric cars. General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) - don’t think that bet is going to pay off. I am here to protect America’s Workers!” The president added in a subsequent tweet.

On Monday, GM announced that it would be eliminating 15 percent of its global workforce and streamlining its production by getting rid of models that are unpopular, ABC News. As a result, GM said it would be closing the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly in Detroit, Warren Transmission Operations in Warren, Michigan, Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio and Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland.

According to ABC News, the auto industry has experienced slowing sales, and the trade tensions and tariffs have also disrupted the industry with GM hit with a $1 billion loss because of trade practices.

“GM is committed to maintaining a strong manufacturing presence in the U.S., as evidenced by our more than $22 billion investments in U.S. operations since 2009. Many of the U.S. workers impacted by these actions will have the opportunity to shift to other GM plants where we will need more employees to support growth in trucks, crossovers and SUVs,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

During a White House news briefing Tuesday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said, prior to the president’s tweet, that the administration was “going to be looking at certain subsidies regarding electric cars and others, whether they should apply or not,” Politico reports.

“I can’t say anything final about that, but we’re looking into it,” Kudlow added. “Again, that reflects the president’s own disappointment.”

According to Politico, the U.S. offers a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 per new electric vehicle. The subsidy is only available for the first 200,000 cars produced, and GM is already close to the mark. However, GM is a part of a coalition that was formed earlier this month that is lobbying to expand that subsidy.

President Trump Admin Asks Court to Enforce New Asylum Restrictions

The Justice Department asked a federal judge in San Francisco late Tuesday to lift his order that blocks the Trump administration from enforcing new, tougher rules on asylum.

If the judge does not lift his order by Wednesday, the administration said it would turn to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to block the judge’s order, according to NBC News.

In the court filing, the government said the judge undermined the president’s effort to have the immigrants in the caravan passing through Mexico to the United States from following the U.S.’ laws, adding that the migrants “rather than properly presenting themselves at a border port of entry, violate our criminal law and endanger themselves by crossing illegally into the country, as events have amply demonstrated.”

The court filing said that a total of 396,579 immigrants were apprehended after illegally crossing the border over the past year. “The executive branch is entitled to use every legal tool available to halt this dangerous and illegal practice,” the filing said.

President Trump signed a proclamation on November 9th ordering the government to stop considering asylum requests from individuals who crossed the U.S. southern border illegally. After an immigrant rights group sued, Federal District Court Judge Jon S. Tigar ordered the Trump administration to not enforce the new rules. Tigar ruled that Trump’s order violated a pre-existing U.S. law that requires the government to consider all asylum requests of all individuals that enter the U.S. despite how they enter the country, NBC News reports.

“He may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden,” Tigar wrote.

What to look out for…

Taking a leave of absence and just hitting reset on my life — it all seemed so simple. I sent out an inquiring email without telling anyone to find out a few details on what steps needed to be taken hypothetically. Next thing I know I’m sitting on the floor, the phone clenched in my hand hearing the words "you must submit your form to me by the end of today to be able to withdraw from this semester."

Let’s rewind a little…

I threw myself into college after growing up like the majority with the notion that this is what needed to happen. You graduate high school and immediately head off to school again to build your future, so it seems. Besides struggling in math a bit I was actually a really good student, here's the catch: I'm not a fan of school. Somehow when I said this to everyone no one thought to explain the idea of a gap year or pursuing something different. So when I moved across the state, battled a crazy roommate, art teachers straight from h*ll, and manipulative relationships, I spiraled.

What they don’t tell you about that leave of absence…

Not to feel guilty

To take care of yourself

That you will start getting an overwhelming amount of emails from your loan providers…

No one tells you how to deal with the first month — even two — and then the last month of your time away. You hear those sharp words and questions from others about school a little more loudly. The stories of people taking a leave and never going back seem to pop up more than usual and everyone around you seems to have their lives together!

They also don’t tell you the growth and progress that can be made! I know this always isn't the case, but I can tell you from my experience that I ended up seeing the light at the end of the tunnel pretty quickly. I knew I wanted to throw myself into work and in turn, I threw myself into new hobbies and blogging. I established myself in a way that I never expected. Everything happens for a reason and if you learn to embrace that time off, you will surprise yourself.

Here is what they should tell you:

You know what is best for you!

Your health will always come first. If you are not taking care of yourself everything else will start to reflect that.

College isn’t going anywhere no matter how old you get.

Taking a break can help you reevaluate and see what you actually want to do once you graduate.

A lot of growth happens within a year and it could give you the chance to appreciate that degree you are pursuing more than you do right now.

It will be a whirlwind, but worth it if you use it wisely.

Ask a ton of questions & make sure you are set financially for this change!

If you are feeling a little lost right now, let it be known that you are not the only one. Along with all the questions and thoughts on the subject of my leave of absence there was always a story of someone that took time off. Explaining how much it helped them to create a silver lining when I needed it. So I hope this can be your silver lining or at least a reminder that this is your path, no one else’s.

Burger King Invented A Whopper-Flavored Dog Treat Called A Dogpper

It seems like Burger King is getting into the dog treat industry with the invention of a new whopper-flavored treat for your dog. Human’s best friend is front and center at Burger King with the new dog bone shaped treat so aptly called “The Dogpper.” See what they did there?

The Dogpper is a “flame-grilled” dog treat that will allow your favorite four-legged family member a chance to eat fast food with you, as Bustle notes. The bone-shaped treat is for dogs only, and not to be mistaken for something a human can eat—so don’t think about trying to eat it yourself to see if it truly tastes like a Whopper.

The Dogpper is free when you order a Whopper at Burger King through DoorDash using the promo code DOGPPER. Available for a limited time, Burger King and DoorDash are giving all dog-owners a chance to treat themselves and their furry friends from November 28 through December 4. There’s a limit of one per person and are only available with the food delivery service.

For those new to DoorDash, any order $10 or more has free delivery in addition to that free Dogpper. Sorry for anyone who thought they could just go into Burger King with their pup to get their doggper (we don’t recommend for health code reasons.)

Also, Burger King did a photo shoot with a bunch of pups as part of the advertisement for this new treat and it’s probably the cutest thing ever. (I'm just saying, the real star of this campaign are the dogs featured and I want to give them all the dog treats)

Anyways, It’s humans turn to be best friends to their doggo with this dog snack. Now you won’t have to worry about saying “no” to the puppy eyes while you eat!

The Internet Paid Tribute To Late 'Spongebob' Creator Through Memes & I'm Just Going to Stay INDOORS To Cry

A part of everyone’s childhood took a hit on Tuesday when Stephen Hillenburg, 57, the creator, producer, director and writer of hit classic cartoon SpongeBob Squarepantsdied from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), according to a statement from Nickelodeon.

SpongeBob Squarepants has been running since 1999 on the Nickelodeon network and —in its nearly two decades on air— the show has produced many classic moments and quotes that have given the show #iconic status. The show has received the Internet's “highest honors” in the form of the “meme treatment.” Several hugely famous memes have been created as a result of the show like the “mocking SpongeBob” and “confused Mr. Krabs," to name a few.

Fans of SpongeBob and Hillenburg took to social media to honor the deceased cartoonist through their own fan art creation, clips from their favorite episodes and (because this is the internet) memes.

They talked about the friends and shared some of the amazing art they've made because of the show.

They reminded everyone that, yes, Hillenburg was Number One.

They thanked him for all of the Meme-ories.

And shared a bit of grief and a whole lot of love for kids and the kids inside us all.

While Hillenburg will be remembered for creating one of the longest-running, EMMY award-winning cartoons, he will also be remembered, thanks to the internet, for the countless memes that came out of his wild and wonderful fever dream of a show.

Margaret Atwood is *Finally* Writing a Sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale'

More than 30 years after publishing The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood is writing a sequel to the famous novel.

Penguin Random House made the announcement on Wednesday, even revealing a name for the book: The Testaments. Set to release on Sept. 10, 2019, the book will take place 15 years after Offred's final scene in The Handmaid's Tale and will be narrated by three female characters.

"Everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings is the inspiration for this book," Atwood said in a statement on a video she tweeted. "Well, almost everything! The other inspiration is the world we’ve been living in."

Penguin Random House clarified that The Testaments"is not connected to the television adaption of The Handmaid's Tale."

The Hulu show, which stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, deviated from Atwood's story in its second season. However, showrunner Bruce Miller said that not only has she been involved in the adaption, but that the two began "talking about season two in the middle of season one."

"[Atwood] plays a huge role," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "She's the mother of us all. Usually when you adapt a classic book, you're not lucky enough to have the author around. We are very lucky to not just have her around, but very much energetic and involved. She was in the writers' room very early in the season. We've been talking throughout, and she's been reading everything. She's very involved. She's our guiding star, and always has been."

A third season of the show is expected to premiere in April or May of 2019.

John Krasinski Said He Went Through a Box of Kleenex in Just 20 Minutes While Watching Emily Blunt in 'Mary Poppins Returns'

In case you needed more proof that John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are absolutely adorable, look no further than his reaction to Blunt's latest film, Mary Poppins Returns.

"We just screened it for my family over the holidays," Krasinski said onThe Ellen DeGeneres ShowWednesday. "I tried to prepare [my daughters] for how emotional it is. The first time I ever saw it, they gave you a tissue box in the screening room. I was like, 'Oh that's very nice. I don't have a cold.' And they started screening the movie and 25 minutes into it, I stood up and went to the back of the room. And Emily said, 'Do you not like it? I've never seen this happen.'"

He continued, "I was pushing through all the bagels and muffins that were in the back looking for napkins. I was like, 'I need anything to stop this crying!' I was crying so much! I blew through the tissue box in 20 minutes. I had to go to the napkins, and then when I ran out of the napkins, it was all sweater."

Krasinski summed his entire reaction up nicely: "Just a lot of [wiping my eyes and saying], 'Oh, it's so beautiful!'"

Blunt plays Mary Poppins, the character made famous by Julie Andrews more than 50 years ago.

"It's honestly one of the most beautiful films,"Krasinski said. "I think it's exactly what everybody needs for the holidays. It's pure joy!"

This isn't the first time he's been brought to tears by his wife, either. Back in 2014, Blunt's role in Into The Woods also made him cry.

"He cried. He absolutely loved it," Blunt told E! News. "I think he was so moved by it by what it's saying to this generation and that idea of nobody being alone at the end. It's such an amazing theme running through this film."

Ugh, they're too cute.

The FBI is Currently Investigating a Man Who May Be "Among the Most Prolific Serial Killers in U.S. History"

Samuel Little, a man currently sitting in a Texas prison, could be "among the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history," according to a new report from the FBI

The 78-year-old — who's already serving three life sentences for the murder of three Los Angeles women during the 1980s — has confessed to more than 90 murders, which span more than a dozen states coast to coast, The New York Times reported. The FBI is working with the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Texas Rangers, and numerous state and local law enforcement agencies. So far, investigators have confirmed Little's ties to about 30 of the murders he confessed to.

"By the time we are done, we anticipate that Samuel Little will be confirmed as one of the most prolific serial killers in American history," said Bobby Bland, the district attorney of Ector County, Texas, where Little is being held.

According to the Associated Press, Little began confessing last spring while seeking a prison transfer after he lost an appeal. He has a long history of criminal activity, including shoplifting, fraud, drug charges, solicitation, and breaking and entering. In 2012, when Little was arrested on a narcotics charge, Los Angeles police matched his dna to three unsolved murders from the 1980s, the FBI said.

"In all three cases, the women had been beaten and then strangled, their bodies dumped in an alley, a dumpster, and a garage," the FBI report stated, adding that the discovery of those crimes prompted a full background report, which "found an alarming pattern and compelling links to many more murders."

According to the report, Little can't remember a lot of details about specific dates and locations, but he does remember his victims.

"Little remembers his victims and the killings in great detail. He remembers where he was, and what car he was driving. He draws pictures of many of the women he killed," the FBI said.

The New York Times reported that Little "displays no sign of remorse while discussing the killings."

Along with its report, the FBI also released a map of murders potentially committed by Little.

HC Wake-Up Call: John Kerry Presidential Bid, Stormy Daniels Breaks from Michael Avenatti, & Trump Threatens Dems

$

Good morning Her Campus!

John Kerry Considering 2020 Presidential Run

Former Secretary of State John Kerry isn't ruling out running for president in 2020. When asked about a possible bid on Tuesday at an event at Harvard's Institute of Politics, Kerry responded that he's "not taking anything off the table."

"I've said I'm not going to eliminate, I'm not taking anything off the table," Kerry said. "But I'm not sitting around— I haven't been running around to the most obvious states, laying any groundwork or doing anything. Am I going to think about it? Yeah, I'm going to think about it, I've said that point blank."

According to CNN, Kerry would be joining "what is likely to be a large field of Democratic candidates vying to challenge President Donald Trump." Kerry added that he's not too confident in any other 2020 contenders right now. "I'm perfectly ready to embrace somebody that I think can win, or who wants to address all the issues that I just talked about and understands them," he said. "But I'm going to be very candid here, and some people who are thinking about it aren't going to love me for it, but I'm not -- I don't see the person yet that I'm prepared to say that about."

The 74-year-old ran for president in 2004 and secured the Democratic nomination, but eventually lost to President George W. Bush. Afterward, he served in the Senate before leaving in 2013 to serve as secretary of state in the Obama administration.

Stormy Daniels Says Michael Avenatti Sued Trump Against Her Wishes

In a statement to the Daily Beast on Wednesday, Stormy Daniels accused her lawyer Michael Avenatti of suing Trump against her wishes, speaking on her behalf without her approval, and crowdfunding money without her knowledge. However, she said she hasn't "decided yet what to do about legal representation moving forward."

"For months I’ve asked Michael Avenatti to give me accounting information about the fund my supporters so generously donated to for my safety and legal defense. He has repeatedly ignored those requests," the statement began. "Days ago I demanded again, repeatedly, that he tell me how the money was being spent and how much was left. Instead of answering me, without my permission or even my knowledge Michael launched another crowdfunding campaign to raise money on my behalf. I learned about it on Twitter."

Daniels added that while she's "tremendously grateful" for Avenatti's representation in her fight to regain her voice, he hasn't treated her "with the respect and deference an attorney should show to a client." She cited the defamation case against Trump, him allegedly not telling her how her legal defense fund was being spent, and the new crowdfunding campaign. "I’m deeply grateful to my supporters and they deserve to know their money is being spent responsibly," she wrote. "I don’t want to hurt Michael, but it’s time to set the record straight. The truth has always been my greatest ally."

Avenatti responded with a statement of his own: "I am and have always been Stormy’s biggest champion. I have personally sacrificed an enormous amount of money, time and energy toward assisting her because I believe in her. I have always been an open book with Stormy as to all aspects of her cases and she knows that. The retention agreement Stormy signed back in February provided that she would pay me $100.00 and that any and all other monies raised via a legal fund would go toward my legal fees and costs. Instead, the vast majority of the money raised has gone toward her security expenses and similar other expenses. The most recent campaign was simply a refresh of the prior campaign, designed to help defray some of Stormy’s expenses."

Trump Threatens Democrats Over Potential Investigations

With a majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats could launch investigations with their own committees into a multitude of issues— from the president's finances to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election — within the Trump administration. Trump addressed the possibility in an interview with The New York Post on Wednesday, which he called "presidential harassment."

"If they go down the presidential harassment track, if they want go and harass the president and the administration, I think that would be the best thing that would happen to me," Trump said. "I’m a counter-puncher and I will hit them so hard they’d never been hit like that."

More specifically, Trump said he could declassify documents — though he didn't clarify anything specific — that would be "devastating" to Democrats. "They will see how devastating those pages are," he said.

According to CNN, this isn't the first time Trump has made this threat. Back in September, he said he would declassify documents and texts related to the Russia investigation, though he later backed off.

What to look for...

Christmas! Both the Rockefeller Christmas Tree in New York City and the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C. were lit on Wednesday night.

Denim is a classic staple that everyone should have in their closet, however, no matter what you pair with it, Denim can still be kind of boring. Now don’t get me wrong, I know I just said that it’s a staple in any outfit, but the day’s of just wearing plain denim are behind us. While we still wait patiently for bedazzling to make a full comeback, another way to accessorize your jean jacket is by adding patches and pins to create an art collection on your denim.

Wearing enamel pins and patches really up our denim game, but choosing the right accessories can be difficult. This shop just oozes black girl magic and confidence. A focus on the importance of embracing being black and a person of color. Depicted is the Pantone-esq paint chart called, "Melatone", the matter-of-fact question, "Does my Melanin Offend You", and a constant reminder that "Black is the New Black."
