Texas Police Officer Amber Guyger Arrested After Fatally Shooting An Unarmed Black Man In His Own Home

Amber Guyger, a Dallas police officer, has officially been arrested and charged with manslaughter after fatally shooting a black man inside his own home. Guyger had just finished her 15 hour shift and claims to have mistaken 26-year-old Botham Jean’s house with her own, according to The New York Post. This event sparked outrage on social media, with many people calling for her arrest and justice to the family.

Right after the event Guyger was asked to take a leave of absence. However, following new evidence, the Dallas District Attorney’s Office has filed charges.

According to CBS46, the arrest affidavit reads that Guyger had entered the wrong apartment due to using a key on the door which was unlocked and slightly ajar. On her account, she had seen a large dark figure and gave verbal commands to leave to the presumed burglar. When those were ignored, she shot twice, then called 911. She was asked where she was, and it wasn't until she turned on the lights that she realized she was in the wrong apartment.

Lee Merritt, the lawyer hired to represent Jean's family in this case, tweeted out this message.

A vigil was held for Jean on Saturday, September 8 to honor Jean's life. His classmates, co-workers, family and friends came together to mourn the community’s loss.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump Preparing For Second Summit With Kim Jong Un, Trump Admin Closing Palestinian Office in D.C. & Millennial-Themed Words Added to Dictionary

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

President Trump Preparing For Second Summit With Kim Jong Un

The Trump administration is preparing for a second summit between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un after the president received a “very positive, very warm” from the North Korean leader who requested another face-to-face meeting, according to White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Sanders said the letter was “further indication of the progress that we hope to continue to make,” but there is still doubts about the North Korea’s willingness to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. Trump’s top national security aide John Bolton said Monday that the U.S. was “still waiting” for progress regarding dismantling of the nuclear weapons, ABC News reports.

“President Trump can't make the North Koreans walk through the door he's holding open. They're the ones that have to take the steps to denuclearize, and that's what we're waiting for,” Bolton said Monday.

via Jonathan Ernst/Reuters

It’s unclear where and when a second meeting would take place. Bolton would only say a second meeting was a “possibility.”

“It is premature to hold another summit meeting without any evidence of North Korean commitment to abandon its nuclear arsenal,” Bruce Klinger, the CIA’s former Korea deputy division chief and current senior fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said, adding that the North Korean leader is seeking “additional concessions from the president” and “sees [Trump] as more eager to maintain the proclaimed success of the summit.”

Sanders rebuked that argument, telling reporters at a White House briefing, “The president has achieved tremendous success with his policies so far,” noting the return of U.S. hostages held by North Korea and the remains of American service members from the Korean War, as well as North Korea not testing a nuclear weapon or an intercontinental ballistic missile in months. However, these things aren’t exactly related to the nuclear threat to the U.S. and North Korea claimed it no longer needed the tests since it had “perfected” its nuclear missile capability.

Trump had praised North Korea for its parade to celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sunday, calling it “a big and very positive statement.”

“Thank you To Chairman Kim. We will both prove everyone wrong! There is nothing like good dialogue from two people that like each other!” Trump added.

Talks between the U.S. and North Korea have been at a standstill since the summit in Singapore in June. North Korea demands that the U.S. sign a joint declaration to end the Korean War, but the U.S. wants North Korea to take steps to denuclearize before it makes any concessions, ABC News reports.

Trump Administration Closing Palestinian Office in Washington D.C.

The Trump administration is closing the Palestinian delegation’s office in Washington D.C., saying it “has not taken steps to advance the start of direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel,” according to State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert.

This is the latest move by the White House to pressure the Palestinians as it prepares to unveil its peace proposal for Israel and Palestine, ABC News reports.

The Palestine Liberation Organization's office has served as a de facto embassy for the Palestinian people, and it is unclear when the decision will take effect, ABC News reports.

via Alex Brandon/AP, FILE

In a statement, Nauert accused the Palestinian leadership of not cooperating with and criticizing the Trump administration’s forthcoming peace plan.

“The Trump administration will not keep the office open when the Palestinians refuse to take steps to start direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel,” National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Monday, adding that there is “no evidence that the PLO office in Washington contributed to diplomacy.” Bolton said the decision “will have ultimately a positive impact on the potential for discussion among the parties as it eliminates unrealistic expectations that at least some of the parties have.”

The Palestinians were quick to condemn the Trump administration’s decision, saying it was a “policy to collectively punish the Palestinian people.”

“We will not succumb to U.S. threats and bullying and... we will continue our legitimate struggle for freedom, justice, and independence, including by all political and legal means possible,” Dr. Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official, said.

Nauert said in her statement Monday that the administration is “not retreating from our efforts to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace.”

Merriam-Webster Added Millennial-Themed Words to the Dictionary

Our language is always evolving, and dictionaries add new words to keep up with the times. Merriam-Webster just added a bunch of millennial-themed words to its online dictionary, including “guac” and, my personal favorite, “hangry.”

According to Time, Merriam-Webster unveiled about 840 new words that had been added to its database on September 4, including words like “marg,” “bougie,” “adorbs,” “hangry,” “guac” and “avo.” Tech terms, like like “Instagramming,” “biohacking” and “force quit,” were also included in the update.

Several non-slang words made the list as well, such as “Latinx,” “self-harm” and “tent city,” demonstrating the importance of these issues in modern society.

In the announcement of the new words, Merriam-Webster wrote that a dictionary should be a “glossary of life,” and that words are introduced to the dictionary after a large number of people have regularly used them and they become a part of everyday vernacular.

“The dictionary’s job is to report that usage as it enters the general vocabulary,” Merriam-Webster’s announcement read. “For each reader, some of the new words inevitably seem already familiar, but others will be encountered for the first time in an announcement like this—which probably means we’re doing it just about right.”

So next time you use any one of these words and someone gives you grief for it, just tell them that Merriam-Webster approves.

Ashley Benson & Cara Delevingne May Have Just Made Their Relationship Insta-Official

Ashley Benson and Cara Delevingne are our favorite new celebrity (maybe) couple, and it looks like the two may have just taken things to the next level—making things social media-official, that is.

Ever since Benson and Delevingne were spotted locking lips at Heathrow Airport last month, they’ve remained pretty coy about their romance, with Benson noting that she likes to keep those parts of her life private. And while that may still be true, it looks like she’s at least comfortable with letting people know what’s hers.

On a recent photo that Delevingne posted on Instagram, PEOPLE reports that Benson left a few cute comments, which were screenshotted by Instagram account @commentsbycelebs. Of course, this is nothing to be suspicious of—we’ve all sent a few emojis before.

However, Benson also commented, “Mine,” which, uh, seems like something a girlfriend would say, if you ask us. (And also kind of cute, TBH.)

Benson and Delevingne may not want the spotlight to be on them, but we’re still totally here for this relationship. Also, I’m still trying to figure out what the sushi emojis are supposed to mean.

David Henrie Issues Apology After Being Arrested at LAX for Carrying a Loaded Gun

Disney Channel stars are always in the news even long after their shows end, but it’s rarely for a bizarre reason like this: Wizards of Waverly Place star David Henrie was arrested at LAX on Monday morning when TSA found a loaded gun among his things as he was going through security.

The Daily Beast reports that Henrie was detained and brought to a police station immediately after the gun, an M&P Shield 9mm pistol, was found. According to Fox News, the How I Met Your Mother actor tweeted an apology later that day.

"I unintentionally brought my legally owned gun which is registered in my name to the airport,” Henrie wrote. “I am so sorry for any trouble it caused, but I am appreciative of TSA's efforts in implementing the safety laws that are in place to protect our beautiful country."

The entire situation is a little baffling—how do you forget you have a loaded gun with you when you’re on the way to the airport?—but it does look like Henrie cooperated with the TSA. He added that he was “humiliated and embarrassed” by what happened, which is understandable. I’m sure Henrie will go through his luggage twice the next time he has to board a plane.

The Couple That Refused To Give GoFundMe Money To A Veteran Is Probably Gonna Get Indicted

The heartwarming tale that began last year when a homeless veteran gave a woman his last $20 when she was stranded on a freeway ramp outside of Philadelphia, has taken a sad turn.

Katelyn McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico were so moved by the gesture from former Marine, Johnny Bobbitt Jr, that they set up a GoFundMe campaign asking for donations to help him get back on this feet. Within weeks, 14,000 people donated over $402,000 according to NBC News

Following the donations, Bobbitt Jr. believed the couple was taking funds from the account and filed a lawsuit to coerce the couple into turning over the remaining cash.  Bobbitt Jr. says he has only received $75,000 and that the couple has bought a BMW and taken lavish vacations with the money from the GoFundMe Campaign.

On Monday, court documents were released and the couples lawyer, Ernst Badway stated, “(Since) it is expected that one or both of the defendants will likely be indicted, my firm and I will no longer be able to continue our representation of them in this matter.”

Last Thursday a search warrant was executed and police searched the home of McClure and D'Amico. It has not been reported what law enforcement was seeking, but ABC did tweet that their BMW was seized.

The couple was set to give separate dispositions on Monday but they were canceled. A criminal investigation has begun and the civil case is on hold until December.

The couple has not been charged and deny the allegations. They stated they withheld some of the funds because they knew Bobbitt Jr. had battled a drug addiction and were concerned he would spend the money on drugs.

Moms Are Fighting To Take Down What They Call A Dress Code 'Witch Hunt’

Florida moms started a petition on Friday to change Pacetti Bay Middle School’s dress code after controversy over the treatment of girls at the school. This St. Augustine school and St. Johns County Schools are being called on to change their “discriminatory” dress code, according to The St. Augustine Record

Michele Faris is the mother of an eight grade student in the district, and she clarified her intentions to The St. Augustine Record. “Our thought process is we want the school district to revisit this policy and make sure it is not discriminatory towards any group, like it is against the girls currently,” said Faris.

The petition on Change.org includes an example of an outfit flagged by Pacetti Bay Middle School administration. The petition states the female students have been “removed from their learning environment, publicly shamed, and have to sit in in-school detention until a parent can bring a change of clothes,” and if the parent cannot come, the student will be in detention until the school day ends.

The petition has been signed by over 1,700 people, and the mother of the young girl featured in the above photo has spoken out about her experience. While she stayed anonymous to protect her daughter’s identity, she told The St. Augustine Record that the schools “need to take a look at what they are policing and ask, is it fair and is it right.”

The senior director of School Services for the district, Paul Abbatinozzi, stood by the dress code. He told The St. Augustine Record that “The faculty is not there to embarrass someone, they try to consistently stay in the guidelines so they can focus on teaching and learning.”

Dress codes across the country have been widely criticized their focus on covering up female bodies with very little regard for what male students are wearing.

'9-1-1' Star Ryan Guzman & GF Chrysti Ane are Expecting Their First Child

It’s been a year of baby announcements, including Kate Upton, Carrie Underwood, Kate Hudson, Hilary Duff (need we go on?) and the fun isn’t stopping any time soon.

Ryan Guzman, star of FOX’s new hit drama 9-1-1, and his girlfriend Chrysti Ane have just announced that they’re pregnant with their first child! The star took to Instagram yesterday to let fans know just how excited the couple is to be expecting.

Under a photo of him and Chrysti Ane, Ryan wrote, “2018 has been a year of unexpected surprises. New jobs, new lives, and new love. Each one getting better than the next. As the year rounds the corner to its end, we both believed it couldn’t get any better. We were wrong! The newest/best surprise has yet to arrive but is on its way.” He finished off the post with the hashtag #DaddyandMommy, just incase his followers missed how adorable Chrysti looks with her growing baby bump.

Chrysti posted the same photo on her Instagram page with the same caption, but added #5monthspreggo and revealed that the couple still doesn’t know the gender of the baby. Although Ryan did reveal that they have two potential names for their little bundle: Mateo and Genevieve.

Chrysti Ane, an avid fitness junkie and creator of various workout guides who once played the pink ranger on Nickelodeon’s Power Rangers Ninja Steel, was also extremely honest about her body changing throughout her pregnancy. She shared a video of herself working out (in which she still has abs at five months pregnant, BTW), and wrote, “It’s been a bit difficult for me to watch my body changing, but as soon as I put into perspective that I’m creating a little angel with the love of my life it makes everything so worth it.” She plans on working hard to stay in shape throughout her pregnancy.

Congratulations to the couple! We can’t wait to see how adorable their baby will be!

Mac Miller's Friend Says Ariana Grande Was 'Incredible'&'Deeply Helpful' In Trying to Get the Rapper Sober

In the wake of rapper Mac Miller’s death this past Friday, a lot of attention has been focused on his most recent ex-girlfriend, Ariana Grande.

After it was announced that the 26-year-old had died from an apparent drug overdose, Ariana was attacked by online trolls who were blaming her for his death, which we now know couldn’t be further from the truth. Loyal supporters of Ariana refused to believe the accusations, and the "No Tears Left to Cry" singer was forced to disable her Instagram comments as a result of the backlash.

On Monday, one of Mac Miller’s closest friends, Shane Powers, took to his podcast The Shane Show to prove just how involved Ariana Grande was in keeping Mac healthy during their relationship. According to Shane, Ariana was an immense help in keeping the rapper sober.

“She was incredible when he was first sobering up. She was a f–king G to him … There could not have been anybody more supportive of him being sober than Ariana. I saw that. I was around it,” Shane Powers said. He also added that Ariana was “an unbelievably stabilizing force in [Miller’s] life, and she was deeply helpful and effective in keeping Mac sober and helping him get sober, and she was all about him being healthy, period, in this area of his life.”

So it is completely untrue and unnecessary to accuse Ariana of being a source for Mac’s struggles or a cause of his overdose, when she was actually incredibly supportive of his sobriety. According to Mac's friend Shane there was no one “in his life more ready to go to the wall for him when it came to him being sober” than Ariana.

Though Ariana hasn’t spoken publicly about Mac’s death, she did share a sweet photo of him on her Instagram on Saturday.

Fans had previously criticized her for leaving the relationship, and she responded by saying “How absurd that you minimize female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them.” She referenced how she “cared for him and tried to support his sobriety and prayed for his balance for years,” but caring for him when it took such a toll on her was not something she could continue to do.

Shane Power’s comments have helped to shed some light on the nature of Ariana and Mac’s previous relationship, and will hopefully help critics to see that they should just leave Ariana alone.

How to Deal When Your Best Friend Only Wants to Spend Time with Their SO

$

Your best friend just started dating someone new, and you’re so hyped for her. You can’t wait to hear all about their new cutie over brunch and help them pick out perfect outfits for all their dates––but then she cancels brunch and is suddenly too busy Netflix & Chilling to hang out with you.  Oh, and that night out at that new place downtown you had planned? She doesn’t think she can make it anymore. Suddenly, your friend’s new relationship can seem way more frustrating than cute, even if you think it’s not going to last very long. And if you hated their SO to begin with, it all seems ten times worse.

Or, maybe your bestie has been in a relationship forever and you’ve been dealing with all this for what seems like decades. Tbh, that’s almost worse: there’s a much bigger chance that her and her SO are super attached to each other, and it may be a lot harder for you to get your bestie back.  Aside from planning an elaborate scheme to break them up,* what can you do?

*Kidding, please don’t do that. Try this instead:

Tell your friend how you feel.

Whatever you do, don’t start icing out your friend–– you guys will end up not talking at all. Make sure you communicate with her and let her know that you miss her. She might be so caught up in the excitement of her new relationship that she hasn’t even noticed that she’s ignoring your friendship. It’s best to have this convo in person, but if you can’t even get her alone for five minutes, shoot her a text asking about making plans.

If she says no because of you-know-who, use the opportunity to bring up how you’re feeling. Hopefully, she’ll try to make more of an effort to see you in the future! You could even mention that you really want to reschedule that brunch so you can hear more about how things are going with her SO. (OK, maybe you don’t, but if you really want to see her and that’s what it takes, why not?)

Boston University student Erica knows firsthand that this method is far from flawless. “My best friend/roommate has been dating a guy for about a year,” she said, “And she's increasingly ghosted me more and more as their relationship has gotten more involved… I’ve brought up the issue with her and talked about my feelings a few times, usually saying something like: 'Hey, it's been a while since we've had one-on-one time and that's making me feel a little left out of your life, can we go get brunch?' It doesn't always go well and I don't think there's really been a significant effort on her part to be better about spending time with me and valuing me, but I do feel better knowing I said something.”

Related: What To Do When Your SO Is Your Only Friend

Try compromising.

Don’t worry, no third-wheeling here! Instead, compromise by inviting your friend and her SO to a large group activity, like going out for a hike instead of a small dinner. It’s not the one-on-one girl time that you’ve been missing, but it’s def better than going weeks without seeing your friend.

You could also agree to go on a double date, if you want a better chance of actually getting to catch up with your friend.  Just make sure that you go with a guy who you’re sort of close with and knows the situation to avoid any extra drama. When you text your friend asking about planning the date, mention that you and a guy would love to grab dinner or something her and her SO sometime. Don’t let her guilt you into going with one of her SO’s friends if you wouldn’t date them otherwise.

Ofc, these options aren’t foolproof. Maddie, a student from Purdue University, has learned not to be that picky when trying to hang out with her non-single friends. “I have a personal curse where all my best friends date regularly which leads to a lot of me feeling left out or never seeing my friends cause they're always with a partner,” she said, “For a lot of people I just suck it up, pretend that nothing is wrong, and try to hang anyway and make the best of the situation, just because I'd rather have what little of my friends' time they give me instead of none of them at all.”

Even if you and your friend are finally in the same room together, she could totally ignore you and cling to her SO the whole time. Rude? Yes. But don’t be disappointed if that’s the case, because you already knew that they were inseparable.

Related: How to Stay Independent While in a Relationship

Give them space.

Tbh, you might want to give her a little space and try to branch out. Even if it’s been going on forever, you constantly trying to get between her and her SO probably isn’t helping your case. Make plans with other girls you haven’t seen in a while, join a new club, say hi to that girl that sits behind you in class.  It’s not that you have to replace your bestie, but put a positive spin on the situation by using your free time to make new friends.

When your bestie finally realizes that her and her SO will survive more than 10 feet apart from each other, you can introduce her to a whole new squad. And maybe, in the meantime, you’ll meet a new SO of your own. Just don’t forget to show up to brunch and fill in your friends about what went down.

Nia Franklin is Celebrating Winning the First Swimsuit-Less Miss America: "I'm a Part of History"

ICYMI, Nia Franklin went from being Miss New York to Miss America! She's officially the first winner that didn't have to be judged on how she looked in a swimsuit.

This year's Miss America — which marked the first year of the organization's rebrand as "Miss America 2.0"— unveiled a number of changes, including the axing of the swimsuit and evening gown portions. Both were replaced with sessions in which contestants are asked questions, rather than being judged on their appearance.

"We are no longer a pageant. Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent, and empowerment" Gretchen Carlson, chair of the Miss America Organization Board of Trustees, said in a statement. "We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues. Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement."

Franklin said she was able to be judged on what she had in her "mind and heart." Her amazing opera skills probably helped, too!

"I'm a part of history," Franklin said on Tuesday's episode of Good Morning America. "Miss America started off as a swimsuit competition, but I think it's important that we're evolving and I'm so excited to be a part of the new era."

She added that as the first Miss America 2.0, she wants to "do the most that I can this year to really have a firm foundation going forward."

The changes (unfortunately) didn't sit well with everybody. But any outcry over the new pageant was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Carlson. In a five-page open letter posted online, last year's Miss America Cara Mund accused Carlson and the pageant's CEO Regina Hopper of bullying, manipulating, and silencing her.

Carlson has since refuted Mund's claims in a lengthy Twitter statement. "Cara, let me be clear: We, as an organization, are very proud of you and all you have accomplished. You are smart, caring and ambitious," Carlson wrote in part. "As a Brown graduate, you aspire to go to law school and one day run for Governor in your home state of North Dakota. You embody the mission of Miss America. I also want to be clear that I have never bullied or silenced you. In fact, I have acknowledged to you and your parents many times that the organization understands the frustrations of serving during such a change-filled and stressful year. It surely was not what you had expected. We’ve acknowledged your grievances, and taken many steps to try to make your experience a good one. You are at the epicenter of a very historic moment for women. Over the past two years, our country has undergone a seismic shift in how professional women are depicted and treated."

Carlson added that "actions have consequences," and Mund's letter was directly responsible for the organization allegedly losing $75,000 in scholarships, "which would have been the first scholarship increase in years."

At least 19 former winners of the Miss America pageant have called for current leadership to resign. The organization's last CEO, Sam Haskell, was forced to do just that in December after leaked emails showing him and other Miss America leaders disparaging and crudely discussing the appearances of former contestants.

Move Over TanaCon, Shane Dawson's Next Project Will Dive Into Jake Paul's Mind

The Mind of Jake Paul, coming to a... computer, iPhone, or tablet screen near you. YouTube personality Shane Dawson released a teaser for the upcoming documentary series on Tuesday, and it looks as though it's going to be just as good — if not better — than the series he did on the disaster that was TanaCon.

According to Billboard, the series "aims to provide a window into [Shane's] fellow Youtuber's life from an outsider's point of view."

The trailer opens with a compilation of Paul's infamous stunts and pranks, which fades before Shane says "This is gonna be a nightmare." The most interesting part comes toward the end, when Shane implies that he didn't really tell Jake the entire truth about the project. Someone off-camera asks Shane what he's most worried about, to which he quietly replies, "That he's gonna be mad when he finds out what this series is actually about."

Leading up to Tuesday's reveal, Shane had been dropping hints about the series on Twitter. On Sept. 3, which he said was his final night of filming for the series, Shane tweeted that he's "never felt more drained, emotional, confused, excited, angry, yet creatively fulfilled" in his life. "I literally feel like my brain's gonna burst," he added.

Shane even said he has around 100 hours of footage. I, for one, am excited to watch as much as that as possible.

The eight-part (!) series will begin airing Sept. 25.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump 9/11 Backlash, World Hunger Highest in Years, & Australian Newspaper Serena Williams Controversy

Good morning Her Campus!

Trump Faces Backlash for 9/11 Behavior

Tuesday marked the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and President Trump spent the day saying and doing things that many found insensitive. The first incident occurred in early hours of Tuesday, when Twitter's trending topics were dominated by 9/11-related subjects due to many paying tribute to those who lost their lives. Trump, on the other hand, was tweeting about his disdain for the FBI and Justice Department. According to the president, two former FBI officials, Peter Strozok and Lisa Page (who were publicly revealed to be trading anti-Trump texts) tried to undermine his administration by launching what he called a "media leak strategy."

North Carolina Republican Representative Mark Meadows was the first person to make this claim. The Washington Post reported that the claim is "debatable," and Strzok's attorney attributed any reference of the phrase in leaked texts from his client to "an effort to stem unauthorized disclosures of information." Trump called for action from both the DOJ and FBI, despite the fact that Strzok and Page have both left the bureau (Strzok was fired for the texts). In other tweets, Trump again condemned the FBI and DOJ, along with Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, who he thinks colluded with the departments, foreign spies, and Russians.

Later, a photo emerged of Trump arriving in Pennsylvania to attend a 9/11 memorial service — where he was pumping his fists. Twitter quickly called out what appeared to be an untimely celebratory move.

Trump's past behavior in regards to 9/11 was also a talking point for many. Just hours after the terrorist attack, Trump called into a New Jersey news station to discuss what happened. He ended up talking about how his building at 40 Wall Street "actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually — before the World Trade Center — was the tallest."

He continued, "And then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second tallest. And now it's the tallest."

World Hunger is at Its Highest in Years

According to the United Nations' 2018 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, which was released on Tuesday, the number of people suffering from hunger is at an eight-year high. In total, 821 million people — one in every nine — were malnourished in 2017. The number is significantly higher than 2016's figure, which CNN said could put at risk the UN's goal of eradicating hunger in the world by 2030.

Though a variety of factors affect the number of hungry people around the world, the UN said climate change is playing a large role. "Hunger has been on the rise over the past three years, returning to levels from a decade ago," said the UN agencies responsible for hunger and health in a statement. "This reversal in progress sends a clear warning that more must be done and urgently if the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger is to be achieved by 2030."

Undernourishment and "severe" food insecurity have also increased in all parts of the world, except for in Europe and North America. The problem most prevalent in North America? Adult obesity. Global rates are on the rise, with more than 672 million obese.

An Australian Newspaper is Doubling Down on Its Controversial Serena Williams Cartoon

Serena Williams stood up to an arguably sexist — or at the very least, unfair — umpire at last weekend's US Open, and Australian newspaper The Herald Sun responded by running a cartoon version of the tennis legend, which has since been labeled both racist and sexist.

Among those who condemned the cartoon were J.K. Rowling and the National Association of Black Journalists. "The Sept. 10 cartoon not only exudes racist, sexist caricatures of both women, but Williams’ depiction is unnecessarily sambo-like," the group said in a statement. "The art of editorial cartooning is a visual dialogue on the issues of the day, yet this cartoon grossly inaccurately depicts two women of color at the US Open, one of the grandest stages of professional sports."

Mark Knight, the editorial cartoonist for the Sun, dismissed the criticism. Then, on Tuesday, another cartoon of Knight's turned up in the paper — this time on the front page. His original depiction of Williams was surrounded by additional cartoons and a huge headline that reads, "Welcome to PC World."

"When I watched the U.S. Open, I was sitting there like everybody else, and I saw the world No. 1 tennis player have a huge hissy fit and spit the dummy,” Knight said. “That’s what the cartoon is about, her poor behavior on the court. Nothing to do with gender or racism at all."

He continued, "I think what’s happening here is people are just making stuff up. The cartoon was just about Serena on the day having a tantrum. That’s basically it."

The cover faced the same, if not more, criticism

Ever wonder if you were to wear the same shirt twice in a week if anyone would notice? I think we've all thought about it at least once. I see a lot of posts about how to wear different clothing pieces in different ways, so it has to be on a lot of our minds.

Last week, I did a bit of a social experiment in the office where I wore the same outfit for a week. I will admit, I switched up my shoes each day but the ensemble stayed the same.

The outfit was a flowy black Vera Wang top with a navy blue underlay and thrifted faded black work pants. Now, I know what you're thinking: I know this outfit was all black which is very subtle and hard to notice when something is different. But, if I wore a yellow top every day, I would have been caught right away. It's all about playing it smart.

So, how did my week go? Well, I'm here to share.

I Wore The Same Outfit For A Week And No One Noticed- White high heeled boties with tie strap from payless

Monday

On Monday, I got dressed in my Vera Wang and thrifted work clothes, went to work, came home to binge-watch Friends (again), and then fell asleep. Pretty easy first day!

I Wore The Same Outfit For A Week And No One Noticed- Criss cross white, black and tan heels from Call it Spring

Tuesday

Tuesday morning came around and I realized I hadn't done my laundry because Rachel was too busy telling Ross she loved him and distracted me (again). I saw my clothes from yesterday laying on my chair and thought, "What the hell?" I threw on the same outfit, switched up my shoes, and walked out the door.

I got to the office and so far so good. I was slightly on edge because I totally thought someone was going to point it. It's just two days though, so at least I can weasel my way out of this if need be. I didn't get caught, and from what I could tell, no one seemed to really notice. I even got a compliment on my shoes from my co-worker.

Wednesday

Wednesday morning came and I threw on the same outfit (newly cleaned) while still mixing up my shoes. I was definitely more on edge today. I thought I caught my boss eyeing my shirt for a little too long of a period. Like she was trying to figure out if she had seen that shirt before or not. She didn't say anything, and neither did I.

Yes! Another successful day in the office.

Thursday

Thursday morning. Okay. I am definitely sick of this outfit, but I'm committed at this point. I head into the office super apprehensive because no way can I go one more day without anyone noticing. Either they have all noticed by now and haven't said anything OR people really don't pay attention to what others wear. I'm honestly good with either of those outcomes.

I'll be honest — I was very bored with wearing this outfit. Like very, very bored. I spilled the beans at lunch on day four and literally NO ONE KNEW. The worst I got was my boss thought she had seen me wear that shirt already but she thought it was on her for thinking that, not me. So basically, by wearing the same outfit, you start to make others question their sanity before your own.

My cubicle co-worker said she noticed but didn't say anything. She thought I just wasn't going home at night (every night?) which she then realized didn't make sense because I had different shoes on each day. My other coworker was baffled that she complimented my shoes almost every day and didn't even notice the outfit.

But the jig is not up yet friends...

Friday

So, the whole office was made aware of my ensemble choices for the week and we all had a good laugh. Also, shout out to them for being for being my guinea pigs, unknowingly. They were real sports because they all knew this was going to end up on the internet eventually.

Friday morning, I definitely could have worn a different outfit but I felt like I owed it to myself, the Vera Wang top and some thrift shop in Los Angeles to stick it out for the week. So, I put on the same outfit I had worn the past four days and strutted into the office.

I was semi-curious if anyone would notice after I told them and BOY did they notice. No sooner had I walked in the door and a co-worker pointed out she had seen that outfit once, twice, maybe even three or four times before. Dead. Caught. NOW the jig is up.

I wore the same outfit to the office for a whole week and ONLY changed my shoes.
So what's the lesson here? The shoes make the outfit. Put a little funkiness into your jewelry, shoes or accessories and I BET you could outfit repeat more times than you think before your co-workers pick up on your habits.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Kit Harrington Is Questioning The Lack of Gay Actors in Marvel Films & It's About Time

It turns out Jon Snow does know something.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington echoed what many fans have long asked for, when he made a call for better representation of gay actors and characters in Marvel Films during an interview to promote his new film, The Life and Death of John F. Donovan at the Toronto Film Festival.

Harrington told Variety, “There’s a big problem with the masculinity and homosexuality that they can’t somehow go hand in hand. That we can’t have someone in a Marvel movie who’s gay in real life and plays some super hero. I mean, when is that going to happen?”

Marvel has faced criticism for the lack of diversity in its films, as many feature white, heterosexual male actors. Recent films like Black Panther and the upcoming Captain Marvel have made some progress in increasing diversity, but there is still a long way to go.

Casting queer actors in a superhero film is not unheard of. Ian McKellen played Magneto in the X-Men franchise, Ezra Miller starred as the Flash in 2017’s Justice League, bisexual actor Andy Mientus had a role on The Flash TV show and it was recently announced that Ruby Rose will be the star of the new Batgirl television series. But Harrington’s director, Xavier Dolan (who is himself openly gay) points out that when these positive casting decisions have been made, fans often comment that the character is “too gay” or “not gay enough.”

But Harrington (who has not starred in any of Marvel’s films) makes an important point: Marvel Studios properties reach a wide audience (with films like Avengers: Infinity War bringing in over $640.9 million dollars globally in its opening weekend) and can use that power to have a large and lasting impact when it comes to diverse representation in film.

The Marvel comics offer plenty of LGBTQ characters that can be developed for film and there are plenty of LGBTQ actors to play them. If fans and famous faces continue to advocate for increased representation in mainstream media, hopefully Marvel, along with other major studios, will take note.

'Bachelor' Alum Bekah Martinez Is Pregnant

Bekah Martinez was one of the girls competing for the heart of (boring-ass) Arie on his season of The Bachelor who stood out the most. She was younger, more vocal, different from the rest of the girls. She was our dark, curly pixie cut in a world of blonde ombres.

Now she’s about to pass on her spunk, and possibly that pixie cut. Bekah, 23, announced today that she is expecting her first child with Grayston Leonard, her boyfriend of seven months.

“I was in disbelief and thought, ‘Is this really happening? I immediately called Grayston and then went across the street to the Dollar Tree and bought two more pregnancy tests," she told PureWow about her surprising discovery. "They, of course, were both positive.”

Though the news came as a shock to the couple, who had only been together for three months at the time, Bekah couldn’t be more excited about her upcoming arrival. “It’s the one thing that I’ve known with certainty for so long. I’ve gone back and forth on the idea of marriage and relationships, but I’ve always felt sure that I want to be a mom.”

Since finding out about her pregnancy, Bekah has decided not to be part of the Bachelor franchise anymore, and she is very okay with that. “I think pregnancy is better than Bachelor in Paradise,” she said.

Bekah made headlines earlier this year for being found on a missing persons list after her stint on the Bachelor. She’s also still active on Twitter, giving her take on Bachelor news such as the next season’s casting announcement:

Here’s hoping Bekah’s baby grows up to be as pithy and entertaining as she is.

Every Outfit Timothée Chalamet Wore At The Toronto Film Festival Ranked

If one good thing came from 2017, it was the emergence of Timothée Chalamet. And as if starring in three critically acclaimed films, seducing the internet and being nominated for an Oscar weren’t enough, Chalamet managed to add one more title to his resume—style star, a feat accomplished without the help of a stylist. (Remember the iconic white tux he wore to the 2018 Academy Awards?)

But after the Oscars, Chalamet kind of disappeared, choosing to focus on his slate upcoming projects (Netflix’s The King, Greta Gerwig’s Little Womenand a new adaptation of Dune). So, after being off the radar for months, we all knew that Timothée Chalamet’s reemergence last week at the Toronto International Film Festival was poised to be one of the biggest style moments of the year. And sure enough, Timothée did not disappoint.

In addition to debuting a swoon-worthy new haircut (don’t @ me), Chalamet rocked the deepest of all V-Necks, bold prints galore and a green velvet suit in the eleven (yes, eleven) outfits he wore in the few days he was there. And while it is literally impossible for him to look less than stunning, there were some clear winners.

So, without further ado, here is every outfit Timothée Chalamet wore at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, ranked.

11. The Pink Hoodie

Even on the trip to Toronto, Chalamet was setting the style bar very high with his choice of a pink hoodie. Less confident and fashionable celebs may have chosen a hoodie in a muted color, but Timothée, the star that he is, knew that an interesting color is the key to taking an outfit from good to great. Bonus points to him for looking this good after a day of travel.

10.  The Ellen DeGeneres Shirt

There is nothing I love more than a celebrity that repeats an outfit. Why? Because it shows that they’re just like us. Those that follow Timothée on Instagram, will remember that in May of this year, he posted a selfie in which he was wearing this exact shirt (while drinking orange juice).

Well, fast forward four months, and the Ellen shirt has made a reappearance. And who can blame him? If I made an appearance on Ellen, I would wear that shirt every day.

9. The Classic White T-shirt

A classic look that he rocks with ease and confidence. What more can be said?

Remember the shirt that Troy wore when he and Gabriella met in the first High School Musical? This is basically the 2018 version of that.

7. The (Patterned) V-Neck Sweater

Here’s where things get fun. On Friday, at one of his numerous press events, Timothée busted out this bold sweater. First of all, I don’t know how hot it was in Toronto, but I imagine it wasn’t totally autumnal, so props to him for rocking a full sweater (I would be sweating like crazy). Second of all, this print is perfect for on-camera appearances, as it is detailed yet doesn’t distract from his face, or the interviews he’s participating in.

6. The Oversized Cardigan

he looks so small and cute <3

For this look, Chalamet paired an oversized cardigan in a bold print with a look he rocked earlier in the day—a plain lilac shirt (see look #5). This is the perfect example of how to create two different looks out of basically the same outfit.

5. The Purple V-neck with Fun Socks

This was the first ~official~ look that he rocked at the festival and there is a lot going on. First, this was the debut of the new haircut (which he totally rocks--it adds to his indie-star look). Second, this was the first (and deepest) of the V-necks he wore throughout the day on Friday. Third, the cropped suit pants and fun socks make this outfit professional, yet cool — the perfect vibe for one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars.

4.The (Red) V-Neck Sweater

The third (and best) V-neck of the weekend, this red sweater (paired with the same pants from look #5), is simultaneously bold, yet simple. Without any distracting patterns or silhouettes, this bright red sweater shows Timothée Chalamet is not here to mess around.

3.The Green Velvet Suit

Last awards season, Timothée Chalamet rocked his fair share of velvet. And it looks like he poised to do it again this year. While not a full-on velvet suit, the green velvet sports coat, paired with black pants and shoes is a step in the right direction, giving off a luxe look for an evening of parties and mingling.

2.The Bold Suit

HE LOOKS SO GOOD AWW @tchalamet

For the premiere of his new film Beautiful Boy (the reason he was serving looks in Toronto in the first place), Chalamet chose to once again collaborate with his favorite designer (who created his 2018 Oscars look), Haider Ackermann. The black suit featured what could be described as white floral detailing all over the front and back.

Chalamet paired the suit with some black leather boots. So often men phone it in on red carpets, opting for simple tuxes, but Timothée Chalamet opted to take a risk, and boy did it work. (Side note: The shorter hair looks hella tight with this outfit.)

HIS OUTFIT YES @tchalamet

A post shared by zoë chalamet (@chalavmets) on

For another day with press (including a fun interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz), Timothée Chalamet rocked the best look of the weekend: a patterned button-down with a simple pair of jeans. It may not have been as luxe or extravagant as some of the other outfits he wore over the weekend, but the bright colors fit his bubbly and enthusiastic personality. And with the added benefit of the tousled hair, this outfit easily became iconic.

But amid all of the fashion fun, we mustn't lose sight of why Timothée Chaalmet was wearing all of these outfits in the first place. He was at TIFF to promote his timely new movie, Beautiful Boy, a film that discusses addiction. The film has already generated a lot of awards buzz, which means we will hopefully be seeing Timothée in many more looks.

Beautiful Boy hits theaters October 12.

Meghan Markle's Dog Landed A Book Deal & Is Now My New Favorite Author

If you like your books the way you like your memes (centered around dogs, obvi), then I’ve got some great news for you.

Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has a beagle named Guy, who Marie Claire reports is the subject of a new book titled His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog. The book was written by Guy himself, so we know we’ll be getting the complete truth about his wild ride to Kensington Palace.

According to People, the book tells of Guy’s adoption from Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Kentucky and his adjustment to life as a pampered pooch. Like all dogs, Guy gets into some shenanigans—he has to learn how to pee on the other side of the fire hydrant, and that Prince Charles’ Cornish Yarg sandwich isn’t his to eat.

We see Guy’s rise to royalty paralleling that of his person. Meghan came from humble beginnings to become the first American and the first biracial person to join the royal family. She and husband Prince Harry bonded over their love for philanthropy, so it makes sense that she would be the owner of an adopted shelter dog instead of a purchased one from a breeder.

Aside from Guy’s book deal, the pooch has got some more excitement going on in his life: Meghan and Harry have adopted a sibling for Guy, a black Labrador named Oz. Maybe Guy can give Oz some advice on how to write his own memoir?

I have a lot of questions about the book. What did the royal wedding look like from a dog’s eye view? Do British dogs bark in a different accent than American dogs? Did Guy get to meet the Queen’s Corgis? I guess I’ll have to find out when the book comes out on November 20.

'13 Reasons Why' Star Katherine Langford Is Returning To Netflix

If you've been bummed over having to say goodbye to Katherine Langford on 13 Reasons Why, you can wipe those tears away because the Aussie actress is returning to Netflix as the lead in Cursed, a series from famed comic book writer/artist Frank Miller (Sin City) and writer/producer Tom Wheeler (Puss In Boots), which takes on a key character from the King Arthur legend, Lady of the Lake. Zetna Fuentes (Ray Donovan, Jessica Jones) is set to direct and serve as executive producer on the first two episodes of the 10-episode series.

According to Netflix, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. It is a coming-of-age story in which Nimue joins forces with mercenary Arthur on a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.

At the same time, Wheeler is writing the companion book, with Miller providing full-color and black-and-white illustrations, and it is scheduled to be published in fall 2019 by Simon & Schuster. This is believed to be the first time the same creative team will be writing a book and TV series based on it simultaneously as they get to explore the characters from the book in more detail on screen.

I don't know about you, but with a female lead character and an amazing plot, I don't think I can wait until it comes to Netflix!

Chipped Nail Polish Was Featured at New York Fashion Week, So I Guess My Lazy-Girl Hands Are Cute Now?

We've all dealt with chipped nail polish at some point in our lives (some of us probably every day), but never before has it been fashionable. According to Teen Vogue, models at the Tibi show during New York Fashion Week wore purposefully chipped nails, making this look... officially on trend? Meaning my lazy, neglected nails are finally cool?!

Teen Vogue notes that the nail art was created by Jin Soon Choi of JINsoon Nail Lacquer, who was inspired by the many women that don't have time to fix chipped nails. Preach! Each of the models were given chipped manicures in green, yellow, or red nail polish with one finger on each hand featuring a special glitter polish.

This probably doesn't have to be said, but this is a very easy look to make yourself at home. Just dab paint onto your nail and swirl it into uneven and fun shapes, leaving space around the edge of your nails. Seal the design with a top coat and voila! You have fashionably chipped nails worthy of the catwalk, apparently.

Here's to hoping more lazy hacks become mainstream!

After New York Fashion Week, Floral Hairstyles Are My Mood for the Rest of 2018

Even though we're nearing the end of one of the most fashion-filled weeks of the year, the lasting impression from runway shows by Rodarte and Mansur Gavriel at New York Fashion Week 2018 will have you running to the nearest flower shops to recreate some of the hairstyles seen on models. Now, we all know that flower crowns have been the go-to tress accessory for outfits during festival season, Halloween and more – but this new hair debut is just so pretty you'll want to wear buds and petals in your locks every day.

Italian design label Mansur Gavriel debuted subtle and delicate flower-laced hairstyles on all models as a compliment to the gorgeous apparel for the show. In an interview with Byrdie, the global fashion director of Bumble and Bumble,  Laurent Philippon, described exactly how to get this effortless hairstyle: simply use a hair primer (only $25) and eyelash glue to weave flowers throughout strands of hair and make sure they stay in place.

American brand Rodarte opted for a more intricate and bold look, with hairstyles almost being the focal point ahead of the clothing designs. For weaving this heavier look, hairspray and mousse will help create the large, sculpture-like pieces and keep them locked in.

Even though fall is here and everyone is practically bathing in pumpkin spice, that doesn't mean we can't wear spring-like hairstyles that leave us feeling like a particular Disney princess. Ahem:

The best part of these floral hairstyles is that they can be pretty easily created using products you probably already have in your bathroom – it will simply take a lot of patience and arm strength to craft the perfect floral 'do. But hey, whether you're looking to add a colorful addition to your everyday campus look or you're already prepping Halloween costume ideas, this floral-filled hair is a MUST for the rest of 2018.
