How to Give Yourself an Amazing DIY Facial

Winter can be so beautiful: snow is coating the trees, holiday lights are lit up on every street and there are contagious smiles and laughter from almost everyone you pass by. But winter wreaks havoc on our skin. Wind and cold temperatures combined with poor skincare habits lead to dry, cracked skin, breakouts and even excess oil. Luckily, we have a solution. Here are all the steps you need to master the perfect DIY facial. So slip on your PJs, pop in a few movies and relax knowing your skincare woes are on their way out.

1. Cleanse

The first step to an amazing facial is making sure your skin is clean. First, pull your hair back into a ponytail or put on a headband to keep your hair out of your face. Then, remove any makeup you’re wearing and wash your hands. Hands laden with bacteria are not too helpful when it comes to cleansing your face. Then, gently wash your face like you normally do with your favorite cleanser and warm water. We recommend that you don’t scrub too vigorously and also use a foaming or gel cleanser as opposed to an exfoliating one, because the next step in your facial is to exfoliate your skin.

2. Exfoliate

This step is important, but if you’ve already exfoliated in the past three days, forgo this step and move on to #3. Exfoliating too often can lead to broken blood vessels, which leads to redness. It can also cause more breakouts because you’re constantly sloughing off skin cells and disrupting your skin’s natural balance. But if you haven’t exfoliated in a while, give it a go. You can use a spinning brush, like Clarisonic. To exfoliate with a brush, rinse your face with warm water and then use your brush for 30-60 seconds. Let the brush do the work while you guide it around your face. Another option is to use your favorite store-bought face scrub or a homemade scrub. Pinterest is the best place to find DIY scrubs galore. One of our favorite recipes mixes ground coffee and melted coconut oil for rejuvenated and glowing skin. To exfoliate with a scrub, gently dampen your skin with a wash cloth and massage into your skin for around 30 seconds, then rinse with warm water. Pat dry with a clean towel.

3. Steam

Steaming and warming your face increases circulation and it helps the active ingredients in your cleansers and scrubs to sink deeper into your skin. There are two simple ways to steam at home, without constructing a sauna in your living room. One option is to soak a towel in hot water for a bit and wring it out, until it’s hot but not dripping with water, then place it on your face for 5-10 minutes. Another steaming option is to drape a towel over your head and stand over a steaming pot of water for 10 minutes. Be careful with both of these methods—water that’s too hot can damage your skin, so check the temperature before you put it near your face.

4. Mask

This is the part you’ve been waiting for! If you have a store-bought face mask that doesn’t irritate your skin, use that. But you can also try something new by making your own mask out of ingredients you probably have laying around your kitchen. Since it’s winter, we recommend finding a recipe that will moisturize, soothe and brighten your skin. Try mixing 1 cup of dry oats, 1/2 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of organic honey for a perfect winter mask. You can also put the oats in a food processor beforehand so the mask isn’t as lumpy. Rub the mixture on your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Or if you want more of a creamy, soothing facial mask, mix 2 teaspoons of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling), 1/2 teaspoon of organic honey, and 1/2 teaspoon of organic milk together. Leave this on your face for about 10 minutes then gently wash away with warm water.

5. Moisturize

The last step in your luxurious DIY facial is to moisturize. Using a moisturizer is so important, even if you have oily skin. If you don’t moisturize, your skin has to produce more oil to try and hydrate itself, leading to the appearance of shine and more breakouts. After you rinse off your face mask, apply a little bit of your usual moisturizer all over your face. There’s no specific type you have to use, but if you’re going out during the day, make sure your lotion has sun protection included.

Now all you need to do is look at yourself in the mirror and relish in your beautiful skin. Girl, LOOK AT YOU. You’re glowing! We think you should do this more often. #treatyoself

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump's 24-Year-Old Drug Policy Appointee Resigns After Questions Over His Work History, Burger King Shows Support for Net Neutrality & Oprah, Mindy Kaling & Reese Witherspoon Are Now Barbies

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump's 24-Year-Old Drug Policy Appointee Resigns After Questions Over His Work History

Taylor Weyeneth, Trump’s 24-year-old drug policy appointee, is stepping down after contradicting resumes were found and his work experience was questioned, The Washington Examiner reports.

The 24-year-old was appointed as the White House liaison to the Office of National Drug Control Policy and promoted to deputy chief of staff despite having any work experience other than working on Trump’s presidential campaign.

Questioning regarding Weyeneth’s work experience began last week after The Washington Post reported that there were three resumes circulating for Weyeneth, all of which contradicted each other.

According to The Washington Examiner, Weyeneth’s resume listed that he had worked at a law firm, but the law firm told The Washington Post that he was fired after simply not showing up for work.

Weyeneth’s resume also listed that he had a master’s degree from Fordham University; however, the university confirmed that Weyeneth was attending the school, but had not yet earned his degree, The Washington Examiner reports.

Deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah confirmed Weyeneth’s resignation to The Washington Examiner on Thursday, saying, “Mr. Weyeneth has decided to depart ONDCP at the end of the month.”

Burger King Shows Their Support for Net Neutrality by Using Whoppers

With their latest social experiment using their famous Whoppers, Burger King is showing that it is a proud supporter of net neutrality— the federal policy that required all internet traffic to be treated equally by internet service providers. The Federal Communications Commission voted in December to get rid of the Obama administration policy.

According to NBC News, Burger King released a video titled “Whopper Neutrality,” where they pranked their customers and try to help explain what net neutrality actually means.

When the FCC voted to get rid of net neutrality, it basically allowed internet providers to create “fast and slow lanes for subscribers — and open up higher fees that could be passed down to users,” NBC News reports.

Using the Whopper, Burger King explained this by creating different prices for Whoppers based on “Mbps,” which stands for megabits per second and is how download and upload speeds are measured. In this case, however, it stood for “making burgers per second.” For a “slow Mbps,” customers were asked to pay $4.99 for their Whopper. If the customer wanted a “fast Mbps,” they had to pay $12.99 for their burger. And if customer wanted a “hyperfast Mbps” Whopper, they had to shell over a whopping (no pun intended) $25.99.

Most customers stuck with the lower price, but one customer actually paid the premium price for his Whopper, NBC News reports.

Burger King’s video ends with the message, “The internet should be like the Whopper: the same for everyone.”

While net neutrality has yet to be resolved, Attorneys general for 21 states and Washington, D.C. are suing to block its repeal, NBC News reports.

Oprah, Mindy Kaling & Reese Witherspoon Are Now Barbies, So Take My Money Now

We are so close to only being a month away from seeing Oprah, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon grace the silver screen in “A Wrinkle in Time”, and now all of our dreams have been answered because these beautiful women have been turned into Barbies. And you can take all of my money now because I want them all.

According to The Huffington Post, they play Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively, and guide the protagonist, Meg Murry, through the universe to save her father.

Ava DuVernay, the film’s director, shared a photo of the dolls, writing on Twitter, “When Disney makes Barbies of your movie’s characters and you just want to stare at them all day in disbelief because you loved Barbies as a girl but never had any like these.”

Fans are also really excited about the dolls’ diversity, and honestly, we are so proud of this.

“A Wrinkle in Time” hits theaters on March 9. Until then, I am buying one of each.

What to look out for…

Just a friendly reminder that the 60th annual Grammy Awards are this Sunday!

OMG, President Trump's Alleged Mistress Stormy Daniels Will Appear on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' After the State of the Union

Absolutely nothing is normal now, so it shouldn't be a surprise that President Trump's first State of the Union on Tuesday will be followed by an interview with his alleged mistress.

Jimmy Kimmel made the announcement late Thursday night in a tweet, adding what can be assumed to be a sarcastic "#MAGA."

Although Kimmel said he has "MANY QUESTIONS," Daniels may not be able to answer them. In 2016, she received $130,000 "in return for her agreeing to not publicly discuss an alleged sexual encounter with Mr. Trump," according to the Wall Street Journal. The White House has since denied any such relationship.

Regardless, I know where I'll be tuning into on Tuesday night. Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 pm ET.

Janet Jackson Delivered an Emotional Speech for Missy Elliott at 'Essence' Event & I'm Not Crying, You're Crying

Emotions ran high Thursday night at the Essence 9th Annual Black Women in Music event in New York City when Janet Jackson surprised long-time friend and "Work It" rapper, Missy Elliott, with the magazine's "Visionary Award."

"Some rhyme, some rap. Some act, some choreograph. Some write hit songs, some create whole new sounds. Some women are able to make her mark in some of these fields, but there’s only one woman who has made her mark in all of these fields,” Janet told the audience. “Not only have you made your mark, but she’s done so with boldness and courage.”

Elliott, who has collabrated with Jackson on songs like "BURNITUP!" and "Son of a Gun," cried during the tribute.

"That was a surprise," she said in her acceptance speech. "I've known Janet over a decade—and this is not just someone I do music with. I can call Janet any time of night and she will listen," Elliott said. "The times that I may have felt like giving up, she's always given me an encouraging word."

Elliott then continued with a few inspiring and empowering words.

"I wouldn't want to be any other color but black. I'm black and I'm proud. There's something about our DNA that can't be taught. It comes from a different place," Elliott explained, adding, "I want y'all, all of you women in here, to know that you're beautiful. You've gotta believe in yourself, because there are going to be times that people tell you you can't do it or you don't look the part. But I'm a walking testimony."

5 Ways to Get a Valentine’s Day Date After College

$
0
0

It’s that time of the year again when you see couples everywhere you go: holding hands on the subway, taking kissing selfies, cuddling in your airplane row, skating hand-in-hand in the park. Whether you like it or not, PDA is at an all time high in the winter, or at least it always seems to be. If you’re a single girl, seeing couples showing off their love for each other makes you want to curl up in bed with a good Netflix show and never venture out into the real world again. We don’t blame you, but it doesn’t have to be that way! And no, you don’t have to resort to Tinder, either. If you aren’t in a relationship, here are five ways to get a date in time for V-Day.

1. Join a club

In college, there were endless opportunities to join extracurricular activities. Not only were they easily available, but you also had friends who were interested in joining the same activities. In the real world, there are no more club fairs or email reminders about this week’s rugby practice. You have to pursue your interests; no one is going to ask you to.

Fortunately, these clubs do exist in the post-college world, but you have to do some of your own research to find them. Check out posters at your local gym or flyers at the independent coffee shop on your block. Whether you’re looking for a book club or an intramural sports team, you’ll be instantly broadening your network and meeting new people, especially those who already have similar interests. If you hit it off with that cute guy in your salsa class, you might just have a chance at a Valentine’s Day date.

“I got discouraged when I would go out to bars and meet guys, but never go out on dates,” says Kate Bennett, a graduate of Duke University who now lives in New York City. “One night I realized that I probably would not meet someone I would want to date at a bar anyway and would need to find someone elsewhere. When I followed my interests, which was volunteering at a nonprofit once a week, I met a great guy that I’m still dating.”

2. Go to the gym

You may think that you’re never going to get a date at the gym, of all places. You’re sweaty, listening to music and trying to focus on nothing but your workout. In actuality, the gym is a great place to find a date… you just have to step a little out of your comfort zone!

If you see someone at the water fountain or in your spin class, why not smile and say hello? Or if you want to try a new weight machine but aren’t sure how to use it, try asking the guy you’ve been eyeing to give you a hand. Striking up a conversation with a stranger can be difficult, especially when he’s in the middle of a workout, but you have nothing to lose: The guy is most likely going to help you out, and if he doesn’t continue to talk to you, so what? It’s better to put yourself out there than wait around for someone to approach you.

“I always thought guys wouldn’t approach me if I was sweating at the gym, but I was wrong,” says Kelsey, a recent grad living in Boston. “One day, when I finished running on the treadmill, this cute guy next to me said he was impressed with my running and he was just trying to keep up with me. He asked if I was training for anything, and we started talking. He happened to be training for the same half marathon. We hit it off and started to chat every time we saw each other at the gym. He got my number, we went on a date and started dating soon after.”

3. Become a regular

During the winter, it’s tempting to stay in with reality TV reruns and mouthwatering takeout, but this isn’t any way to find a date. Exploring different places is your best chance at finding new favorite spots that you can frequent. If you start going to the same coffee shop, bookstore or even bar, for example, you’ll begin to recognize other people who are also there often. Becoming a regular allows you to become comfortable in a place, which also opens you up to casually meeting new people.

If you keep seeing someone you’re interested in, say hello (eventually one of you will have to)! Luckily, you already have something in common. So despite your desire to stay in on a cold night, sometimes you just have to force yourself to bundle up and explore—you never know whom you might meet.

“I have a hard time talking to strangers, especially guys, when I’m out,” says Dana Stein, a Boston College graduate living in New York City. “Every bar I would go to I would have my friends with me, but it wasn’t fun meeting anyone new. Once I started going to this bar where I really liked to watch football every Sunday, a cute guy approached me that I had seen two times before. He commented on my T-shirt that said, ‘Go Broncos!’ because he was actually from Denver as well. We started talking and we ended up going on a few dates.”

4. Have your friends set you up

You may not have any friends that you could see yourself dating, but your friends probably have friends who could be potential matches for you. According to Match.com, 63 percent of married couples meet through a network of friends. While the goal is to get a date for Valentine’s Day and not necessarily plan a wedding (yet!), meeting someone through a friend is an easy place to start. Your friend knows your personality as well as the person he or she is matching you with, so he or she probably has some idea of whether or not you two would like each other. If you don’t want to go on a blind date with the person, ask your friend to invite a group of people over one night before committing to a date. That way there’s no pressure to match up with the guy or girl, but you’ll be in a comfortable setting to get to know him or her if you’re interested.

“I always wondered whether couples who met through friends were good matches or were together because of convenience—until my friend had a potluck dinner at her apartment,” says Cat Hagen, a Wake Forest University grad living in Boston. “My friend’s friend had brought his roommate, and I ended up talking to him the whole night. We’re still dating after six months. So it does happen!”

5. Give online dating a try

Okay, so online dating doesn’t have to be eliminated entirely if you’re looking for a V-Day date. While Tinder is infamous for hook-ups (though finding a date isn’t impossible), dating apps such as Hinge and Coffee Meets Bagel are better ways to find a date who actually wants to get to know you. On Hinge, you match through mutual Facebook friends, the virtual way of meeting through a friend of a friend. On Coffee Meets Bagel, you list your interests, and each day at noon a new match is delivered to you, whom you can “Like” or “Pass.” If you’re meeting up with someone for the first time, try to avoid setting your first date for the 14th—it’s better to establish some sort of connection before you celebrate Valentine’s Day together!

“I was using Tinder for awhile, but had the most miserable dates,” says Cornell grad Madeline Kleinman, who now lives in Philadelphia. “My friend told me about OkCupid, and while I thought it was a serious dating site for older people looking to get married, I was surprised to see young, cute guys in their twenties. I was messaging with one guy for a few weeks until we finally went on a date.”

Dating in college is undoubtedly different thandating in the real world, but it doesn’t have to be more difficult. If you’re not spending Valentine’s Day with a SO this year, you can still have a great time by following these tips to find a potential date (or just have a good time in the process, totally pressure-free!). You have just a few weeks left before Valentine’s Day comes, so go get out there in the post-college world and snag yourself an eligible bachelor or bachelorette!

Should You Be Drinking Pickle Juice? It May Be The Post-Workout Dream Drink Of The Future

$

0

Should we swap in our pre-workout power drinks for a cup of pickle juice? While it sounds like something out of a bet, apparently drinking pickle juice can be good for your health and is maybe something you should actually consider doing. A study at the North Dakota State University found that pickle juice “inhibits electrically induced muscle cramps in hypohydrated humans” which basically means that your muscles will love you for grabbing some pickle juice, even if your taste buds do not.

The study found that cramps from working out last over half a minute less if you down some pickle juice.

The part of pickle juice which is actually good for you is called pickle brine, and is usually composed of salts, sugars and vinegars. The vinegar in pickle juice is often thought to be the part which is of use to athletes, because it makes our muscles realize that they should stop flexing and therefore stop cramping.

Recipes for the pickle brine are readily available on many typical D.I.Y websites if you want to make your own, or just want to know a little more specifically what exactly you are drinking in order to avoid post-workout cramps.

via GIPHY

Stopping cramps isn’t the only thing that pickle juice is good for. If you have enough pickle juice, it is thought to be able to combat dehydration as well. Active published an article in which it suggested both this, and that pickle juice can help “metabolize carbohydrates and fats.” Overall, if you can stomach drinking a bit of pickle juice, it seems like it could make a difference in how you feel post- workout.

If you don’t want to drink the juice straight out of the can in your fridge, there are companies which sell pickle juice specifically for post-workout purposes, such as The Pickle Juice Company.

Whatever version of the new trend works for you, it seems worth a try to get a little less pain and a little more progress out of your workout.

When Their High School Deleted Their Article About The Misconduct Of A Teacher, These Students Created Their Own Newspaper

$

Almost a year ago, the Washington Post added a new slogan underneath its online masthead: “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” This provocative quote emphasizes the duty that journalists have to the American people—we all have the rights ensured by the First Amendment, but journalists have an acute responsibility to exercise these rights, regardless of the criticism they will face.  This week, high school student journalists Conor Spahr and Max Gordon took the Post’s slogan to heart as they faced pushback after publishing information about the misconduct of a former teacher and launched an independent publication of their own to make sure their reporting reached their community.

Conor Spahr is a student journalist for The Telegraph, which is Herriman High’s school newspaper. On January 18th, he and editor-and-chief Max Gordon broke the story about an ex-teacher at Herriman who is under investigation for misconduct.

“In early November, there was a lot of questions surrounding why Ryan White had left Herriman High. Rumors circulated about it being surgery,” Spahr told Her Campus. “He was a very popular teacher so we want to get to the bottom of what had actually happened. This year we've been trying to do more important, hard hitting stories as a publication, and this felt like a great opportunity.”

As noted by the Washington Post, Spahr interviewed students and teachers in the area, and sent out requests for public records. On Friday when the story was published, it boasted the headline “Herriman High Teacher Fired For Misconduct.”

This story was quickly picked up by local news sources and The Telegraph’s pageviews skyrocketed. The truth was out: White had been fired after a complaint that he had sent inappropriate text messages to a student. However, according to a press release from Spahr and Gordon, “In the dead of morning, on January 19th, Herriman Administrators deleted the story and took the website offline...No explanation was given to the staff of The Telegraph, nor was a timeline of how long this ban would take effect.”

As Spahr told Her Campus, “Throughout our investigative process, interviewing vice principals and others, it’s all been sort of closed off, they’ve been very distant from us. So we can't say it's totally surprising that admins reacted this way. K-12 Administrators tend to be power hungry, so I think when our school officials saw all the attention this story was getting, they felt like they had to get in under control.”

“In addition to removing the website, the school put a hold on all of The Telegraph's social media accounts so that no posts can be made,” the press release stated. “Student journalists were told all posts to social media and the website would have to be approved by a vice principal in the future, despite this never being a requirement in the past.”

Spahr and Gordon did not allow their story to end in defeat. Instead, they circumvented the system and created their own news outlet, which they called The Telegram. They enlisted designers from their school newspaper, and by Sunday, the website was up, complete with the story about White’s misconduct and the slogan “Student Run. No Censorship.”

“The Telegram is a direct response to not having any control on our official school publication, The Telegraph. Sense admins completely removed our access from the website and deleted the stories, we felt we needed to get the word out,” Spahr said. “The Telegram aims to be Herriman High School's independent news source that will not censor material in any way. In the future we may look to be a news source for the state or the nation, run by high school students.”

Mike Hiestand, a Student Press Law Center legal consultant, said in the press release that “it sounds like Herriman High School official would benefit from sitting in on some civics classes. Killing the messengers is not the way to teach students about the value of a free press.”

As Spahr told Her Campus, “Without a free press, the happenings of a nation are completely concealed. The people have a right to know, and the press has the well-established freedom to report. It is especially important today as members of the United States government use their positions to attack the media.”

High school students are encouraged to apply to write for The Telegram via their website. The nation could definitely benefit from some honest, uncensored journalism from our high school citizens. If they don’t have the freedom to speak up, then nobody does.

Harvey Weinstein’s Ex-Assistant's Lawsuit Details Alleged Harassment & Cleaning Up After His 'Extremely Prolific Sexual Encounters'

Harvey Weinstein's former personal assistant, Sandeep Rehal, has sued the disgraced Hollywood mogul claiming she was subjected to discrimination and harassment, according to court documents filed Thursday and the Hollywood Reporter.

Rehal is suing Weinstein, his brother Robert, The Weinstein Company and the company’s head of human resources Frank Gil for being “forced to work in a pervasive and severe sexually hostile work environment,” and enduring "endless offensive, degrading, and sexually harassing actions, statements, and touching at the hands of her boss, Harvey Weinstein" according to the documents filed by her lawyer, Genie Harrison, a Los Angeles-based attorney specialized in workplace sexual-harassment and abuse cases.

Rehal had worked for Weinstein in 2013 when she was 26 years old and quit in February 2015 when she reached “an emotional breaking point."

The documents state that “much of Ms. Rehal’s work as an employee of TWC involved catering to Harvey Weinstein’s sexual appetites and activities,” which included being involved in both the “preparations” and “clean up” of Weinstein’s “extremely prolific sexual encounters.” According to Rehal, the clean up was of “the semen on the couch in Harvey Weinstein’s office,” which Rehal alleged “happened on a regular basis, three or so times a week when Harvey Weinstein was in New York.”

Rehal claimed those preparations included maintaining a “list of contacts with a special asterisk that identified Harvey Weinstein’s ‘girls,’” “managing the stock” of Weinstein’s erectile dysfunction injections, setting up an apartment close to Weinstein’s office “for him to use with one of his sexual liaisons,” as well as "purchase women’s lingerie for the woman in that apartment."

Rehal went on to allege that Weinstein “used sexist and sexual language” to refer to her in the office and that “on an almost weekly basis” she was “required to take dictation of emails from [Weinstein] while he was naked.”

Rehal also accused Weinstein of unwanted touching whenever she accompanied him in his chauffeured Lexus SUV. These acts were far from being a secret with Rehal claiming that Weinstein’s “sexual abuse and conduct, and his use of the office, TWC, and the staff to enable it” was “common knowledge.”

Weinstein, 65, denies Rehal’s allegations. A spokesperson for the producer told PEOPLE in a statement that “Mr. Weinstein categorically denies these claims and his lawyers will respond in the appropriate legal forum proving they are untrue. The evidence will show these claims for money are in the realm of a science fiction movie.”

Everything You Need to Know About Trump's Alleged Attempt To Fire Robert Mueller

$

According to a report by The New York Times, President Donald Trump ordered the firing of Robert Mueller last June, but White House counsel lawyer Don McGahn said he would quit, rather than carry out the directive.

Mueller and his team were hired as the special counsel to investigate the alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, but President Trump argued he had three conflicts of interest that automatically disqualified Mueller from proceeding with any investigation.

Those claims include a conflict over membership fees at Trump’s National Golf Club in Sterling, VA., which prompted Mueller to terminate his membership. As well as, Mueller’s recent work representing the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner and Mueller interviewing to return as F.B.I. director the day before he was appointed to run the special counsel.

However, McGahn’s refusal to abide by President Trump’s order backfired when President Trump refused to move forward alone and backed down. According to The New York Times, “Mr. McGahn disagreed with the president’s case and told senior White House officials that firing Mr. Mueller would have a catastrophic effect on Mr. Trump’s presidency.”

This news comes in the wake of the long term investigation Mueller and his counsel has been conducting and, on Wednesday, according to a Vox report, “sources told Bloomberg News’s Chris Strohm and Shannon Pettypiece that Mueller 'appears to be wrapping up' the obstruction investigation.”

President Trump, who recently arrived in Davos, Switzerland, was asked about these accusations of Mueller’s termination, to which he simply replied: “Fake news. A typical New York Times fake story.”

While the uncertainty of the end date of the investigation hangs in the balance, President Trump is adamant Russia did not meddle with the election and that Mueller will be fair with his proceedings. President Trump has stated, as he's maintained throughout the investigation, that “There’s been no collusion. But I think he’s going to be fair.”

Are Smartphones Ruining Our Bodies? Because 'Text Neck' Is Apparently A Thing

If you are constantly looking down at your phone, you will most likely experience neck problems in the near future.

Reuters Health says that “text neck” is caused by looking down at your phone while texting or going on social media. This has become a medical issue and doctors say there is an increase in patients experiencing neck and back pain, according to Reuters Health. The average human head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds, but it can feel as much as 60 pounds of pressure when bending your neck to check your phone, says The New York Times.

“In an X-ray, the neck typically curves backward, and what we’re seeing is that the curve is being reversed as people look down at their phones for hours each day,” said spinal neurosurgeon Dr. Todd Lanman to Reuters Health.

While we may believe it’s the younger generation experiencing text neck more, it actually affects all ages. According to The New York Times, kids aged 8 to 18 spend more than 7.5 hours a day consuming media. Yet, it is also reported that adults spend 10 hours a day or more on forms of electronic media.

So, how do we prevent text neck? The New York Times says the easiest way is by “just sitting up.” Reuters Health suggests other simple lifestyle changes. With a cell phone, hold it in front of the face or at eye level, and use two hands and two thumbs to make the spine more comfortable and aligned. If using a computer or tablet, use an elevated monitor stand and a separate keyboard and mouse to keep the screen at eye level.

Even if you are not using electronics, Reuters Health suggests stretches and basic exercises to work on your posture. Bad posture can affect mood, behavior and memory too, so you will want to think about your mental health as well when it comes to text neck.

The 'Charmed' Reboot Has Finally Been Confirmed & the Witches Are Described as 'Tearing Down the Patriarchy'

Last year, the CW announced plans for a reboot of the 1998 fan favorite show Charmed. Originally the plan was to develop a prequel series set in the 1970s, but that plan has changed and the show will now be set in present day.

The updated pilot has a more modern premise, according to the official statement from the network. "This fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch's work is never done."

There has been no word if original cast members Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan will be featured in the reboot, but setting it in present day definitely opens up the opportunity for the OG witches to appear.

Holly Marie Combs has been pretty active on Twitter since the news dropped, and she doesn't seem too happy about the reboot.

Who knows what the new show will look like, but I for one am here for anything that has to do with "tearing down the patriarchy." We'll just have to wait and see.

Lmao.” I’m sure she expected fans to join her in cringing at the “fashion” of the late 2000s, because, lets be honest, who didn’texperience a bad fake tan in that decade?

Grammys 2008. 10 years ago. This tan!!! Lmao

A post shared by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

However, one follower decided to use the fun throwback as an opportunity to throw shade. They commented, "Wow so stunning here!! Before the boobies and fillers, so natural and stunning. You both still look great.” Instead of letting the comments, and the speculation of plastic surgery, go unnoticed, the model responded, saying “Boobies and fillers? F*ck off with your backhanded sh*t. 2 babies and 10 years. Bye, b."

As a general rule of thumb: Don’t comment on women’s bodies, like, ever. Don’t voice your opinions, or tell them that they “looked better before.” Don’t try to publicly out someone for having plastic surgery, gaining weight, or simply looking different. And, for the love of everything that is good in the world, don’t try to mask insults as compliments.

If anyone dares to look back at a photo of themselves from ten years ago, specifically in the era where orange tans, velour tracksuits and Ed Hardy were all the rage, I’m sure that you’ll notice a few changes to yourself too. Trust me — if you’re brave enough to share one of those photos for the world, and in Teigen’s case, to 15.8 million followers, then the last thing you’ll want is someone shaming you, and sharing their two cents on whether they thought you looked better before.

Over the past ten years, Chrissy has become a mother to (soon to be) two children, starred on countless television shows and magazine covers, graced us with her tweets every day, and taught us the perfect way to make all of our favorite comfort foods. Ten years looks goodon her.

Ellen DeGeneres, queen of daytime television, is known for surprising fans with generous gifts, and they just seem to be getting better.

Ellen has been celebrating her 60th birthday (HOW?) on the show this week by honoring her superfans, because of course that's how she wants to celebrate her birthday. On yesterday's show she brought Maura Gonsalves on stage after reading a letter from Maura's boyfriend Noah, who has been deployed for more than a year.

Maura revealed that both she and Noah love Ellen's show, and she even facetimes him so they can watch together. Noah's letter said that he wanted Maura to be able to attend Ellen's birthday show. Ellen surprised Maura with tickets to the show, and then something better: Noah! Watch the sweet reunion below:

Ellen also gifted them a six-night trip to Hawaii, because of course she would. I think I speak for all of us when I say we're blessed to have Ellen DeGeneres, a constant bright spot in the world.

4 Completely Free Valentine’s Day Date Ideas for Couples on a Budget

$

Making Valentine’s Day absolutely perfect for your significant other can be a lot of pressure. However, buying a fancy gift or splurging on that five-star restaurant down the street will sometimes cause more stress than it’s worth/ On Valentine's Day, our Instagram feeds are flooded with sappy pics and captions about how cute some girl’s bae was for surprising her with a bouquet of roses. As college students, let's face it—some people just can’t afford to do that!

If you’re looking to make this Valentine’s Day special for your SO but feel strapped for cash, here are five Valentine’s Day date ideas that won’t blow your budget.

1. Cook dinner together at home

Food is the way to anyone’s heart, and what better way to woo your boo than make dinner with them? This is a simple, yet intimate Valentine’s Day activity that you both can participate in. Use food you already have in your house, turn on some nice music and enjoy having fun together while also creating a yummy meal.

2. Have an indoor picnic

A picnic is one of the most romantic and classic date ideas. Unfortunately, it can be a struggle to plan one in the middle of February, especially if you live in a colder climate. The solution? An indoor picnic! Lexi, a senior at Johnson University, says indoor picnics are one of the easiest (and cheapest!) dates that she likes to have with her boyfriend. "During an indoor picnic, you sit on the floor with blankets, a picnic basket and some dishes. You eat your favorite foods that you packed together, and just enjoy each other’s company. The bonus is you get the total picnic experience without having to go outside!"

Another way to make this date even better is by making a fort for your indoor picnic. Nothing is more fun than getting snuggled up next to your SO with a bunch of cozy pillows and blankets, especially when you have yummy food around. Pop in a movie or binge a Netflix show to get the full effect of the date.

3. Volunteer at an animal shelter together

The classic dinner and a movie doesn’t always have to be your go-to date, especially on Valentine’s Day when you probably want to do something different. If you’re thinking of changing things up this year (and again, trying to save money), one of the most rewarding and fun activities to do with your SO is to volunteer at an animal shelter together.

Before you go to the shelter, contact the manager/director to make sure you have permission to volunteer, and to ensure you meet all of their background checks and requirements. Then, once you’re given permission, together you can take the puppies for a walk, play with the kittens or help the staff members clean the cages and kennels. While volunteering may not be your typical date, it will be a special bonding experience that majorly helps out an organization in need. And you get to play with puppies! (So, like, what’s better than that?)

4. Have a massage night

Nothing says romantic like getting a massage together, but if going to the spa and getting a couples massage is out of the question, you can easily DIY the same experience. Turn down the lights, light some candles, put on some relaxing music, and take turns giving each other a massage using any oils or lotions you have at home. This can be relaxing and sexy at the same time, especially for couples that could use time to unwind together.

It can be stressful to plan the "perfect" night for you and your bae this Valentine’s Day, especially if you’re concerned about spending money. However, the best and most memorable dates some of our collegiettes planned for their SOs were absolutely free, proving that cash spent does not correlate with date quality. Taking time to make plans with your SO for this Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be expensive or stressful—It can simply mean just popping in a movie, having a picnic indoors or sharing a homemade meal. As long as you get to spend time with your SO, that’s the only thing that truly matters.

Jennifer Lawrence Surprised An Ohio High School Government Class to Talk About 'Fighting Political Corruption'

Ohio high school students got the surprise of a lifetime when they were greeted by none other than Jennifer Lawrence on Friday.

Lawrence visited a government class of juniors and seniors along with Josh Graham Lynn, the managing director of Represent.Us, a grassroots organization that fights political corruption.

An active member of the organization, Lawrence talked to the class about fixing democracy.

According to PEOPLE, her knowledge about politics was a surprise to some of the students. They were definitely glad to have her, though.

“It makes a big difference when people who are just 10 years older than us come to talk about political issues,” said Londyn Crenshaw, a senior at Cleveland Heights High School. “When she said, 'this is your time,’ that really made me think.”

Social Media Celebrates Women in Movie Industry with 'Female Filmmaker Friday'

After the upset over the all-male nominees for Best Director at the Golden Globes in January, the lack of recognition for female directors has been abuzz in the news lately. Today several female directors decided to start a movement in appreciation for the perseverance and unbelievable work these women do behind the scenes.

One of the first directors to join the #FemaleFilmmakerFriday movement was Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses. She’s also the co-creator of the The CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Tweeting a photo of herself doing what she does best, she wrote, “We were planning this for 2/2 but people were excited, so let's go for it! My friend Tamra Davis recently posted a photo of herself directing and it inspired me, so I invited some women to do the same. It's hard to become what you do not see. #femalefilmmakerfriday”

Other directors, actors and even fans joined in.

I think we can all agree that this movement is just beginning of the positive steps being taken to give women the respect and recognition they deserve.

8 Ways to Look More Stylish in 2018

We’re only a few into the New Year and you have nothing to wear. Everything is old. Everything is “not in style” anymore. Or maybe you just want to update your look—even if the pieces aren't necessarily already "out of style." What do you do?

Lucky for you, Her Campus has the best eight ways to look more stylish this year.

1. Statement earrings

Oversized earrings make a statement without necessarily wearing bold colors or prints. The earrings speak for themselves. They can be a simple geometric, metallic design or a bright pattern, and add a stylish embellishment simply.

2. Statement shoes

Embellished shoes are the year’s newest fashion statement, with beads and glitter galore. These are definitely a great way to add a pizzazz to any look.

3. Wide leg trousers

Wide leg pants seem to work on everyone. They make your legs look longer, while adding a stylish flare to your outfit. And if you’re on the petite side and worried about "swimming in them," add a long necklace or a waist-defining top to create the illusion of length.

4. Dark denim

Take your light wash jeans and trade them for a more fashionable option. Dark denim jeans in a skinny cut can be dressed up or down; a t-shirt or a blazer both look nice with this statement piece.

5. Ultra violet

Ultra violet is the color of the year. It was chosen to evoke originality and thinking outside-of-the-box, Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman told The Associated Press ahead of the announcement. The color can be used within accessories or even a shirt or sweater. Add ultra violet as a pop of color to your outfit. Since it’s a bold color, make sure to pair it with neutrals.

6. Mix prints

This can be one of the trickier fashion statements to conquer. But you can make it work! One hint to make this work is to mix prints of similar color tones, but if you want two intricate prints, like stripes and florals, try a more muted hue and a bright one.

7. Trench coats

In 2018, trench coats are getting a makeover. They are now embellished with feathers, ruffles, you name it. But even a sleek cut will look fashionable this year.

8. Scarves

Especially with all of the cold fronts currently hitting many parts of the country, scarves are a necessity this season. A scarf can be similar to the statement earrings; bold or subtle colors and patterns work. But they don’t have to be just for the winter either. Scarves can be the print, pattern, or pop of color any outfit needs.

Style is always changing but self-confidence is forever. Be you, be confident, and your outfit will rock no matter which trends you try in 2018.

5 Signs Your Sleep Habits Are Ruining You

$

It’s no surprise that college students often skip a few of the much-needed 7-8 hours of sleep per night, but is it really worth the toll it takes on your body? The short answer? No. Bad sleep habits result in numerous problems, including a lowered productivity and variety of health issues. Avoid 2 a.m. study sessions, stop opting for “just one more episode” on Netflix and get some shut-eye – especially if you can relate to any of the following.

1. Feeling exhausted the second you wake up

It's normal to feel drowsy when you first wake up, but that isn't something that should last all day. Feeling exhausted shortly after waking up is a sign that your body’s internal clock is off. “I can immediately feel it when I’ve been too busy to get a full night’s sleep,” Haley Brooks, junior at Colorado Mesa University says. “Usually it’s easy to jump out of bed and get started on everything I have to do that day, but it’s so hard to do that when I only slept for a few hours.” According to Dr. Josna Adusumilli, neurologist and sleep medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, this is a common issue for college students. “I see a lot of college students with delayed sleep phase syndrome, where the body clock is shifted to a later bedtime and wake-up time,” she says. “This makes it harder to fall asleep at night and harder to wake up for early morning classes.”

2. Having trouble concentrating in class

We’ve all heard our professors’ advice to go to bed early and get plenty of rest before a big test, but how often do we actually follow through with it? Studies show that only getting a few hours of sleep the night before an exam can actually lead to a lower grade despite the extra hours spent cramming. Dr. Adusumilli says busy schedules can put college students at risk for sleep deprivation, which can then affect their performance in the classroom. “Sleep helps consolidate memories and is important for learning, so it is important to avoid sleep deprivation and take naps during the day if needed,” she says. Naps? Count us in!

3.  Feeling more awake after checking your phone

Scrolling through social media feeds before falling asleep may seem like a great way to unwind at the end of a long day, but it’s actually stimulating your brain and keeping you awake longer. “The blue light from cell phones, iPads and laptops can alert the brain, making it harder to fall asleep,” Dr. Adusumilli says. “Additionally, if you read something interesting, exciting or bothersome on your phone or laptop, it may make it tough to unwind and fall asleep at night.” Even though checking social media feeds may seem appealing, it’s best to wait until the morning to avoid disrupting your body’s normal sleep cycle. Having too much screen time at night can slowly lead to your internal clock being offset, which means you’ll continue having a hard time falling asleep every night.

4. Relying on multiple alarms to wake up

If you have to set several alarms to wake up in the morning and wind up hitting snooze a few times, your body is probably trying to tell you it needs a few extra hours of sleep. Dr. Adusumilli says college-aged women tend to have an irregular bedtime and wake-up time because of academic and social demands – which is something we’re all familiar with by now. However, by having such an irregular resting routine, it can be difficult for your body’s internal clock to adjust and wake you up in the mornings. According to Dr. Adusumilli, improving sleep habits can be as easy as having regular sleeping times in order to “get enough hours of sleep and wake up naturally without an alarm clock in the mornings.” We’d still probably set a couple of alarms before a big exam just to be on the safe side.

5. Needing caffeine throughout the day

Grabbing a cup of coffee during the day is one of the easiest ways to perk up before heading into your next class, but this can actually be a sign that you aren’t having the best night’s sleep. Relying on caffeine to feel alert during the day can be an indication that you didn’t have a good night’s sleep, according to Dr. Adusumilli. She even says caffeine, as well as alcohol, can worsen sleep quality. However, this doesn’t mean you have to skip your daily Starbucks run. Registered Dietician Kaila Raygoza suggests limiting your caffeine intake throughout the day, as well as the time you consume it – maybe skip that late-night cup of coffee. If you find you're relying on your latte to give you that little extra boost every day, it might be time to consider adjusting your sleep habits.

Finding the time to get the recommended amount of sleep is a hard task to accomplish. However, bad sleep habits can take a heavy toll on your body, so it’s a good idea to rest up and avoid the negative side effects that come along with staying up late.
