15 Things That Will Set You Up for Success in Your Twenties

This article has been syndicated from The Wolf & The Wardrobe, an InfluenceHer Collective Member. Read the full post here.

As someone who is officially in her twenties and who has reflected more in the last few weeks than I have in ages, I decided to compile a list of things I personally believes every twenty-something needs in their life. Of course, some of these will differ depending on your personal circumstances, personality type, etc, but I think it’s a pretty foolproof list in general for anybody looking to succeed.

1. Your own space

Note, "space" not "place." If you’re living with your rents or roomies, that’s totally cool – keep calm and save on! However, it’s truly imperative for every twenty-something to have their own space. As someone who is an introvert and needs time on my own to recharge and decompress, having a room of my own was really important to my relationship. Before I moved in, my boyfriend, his brother and his friend were living together. This meant, whenever I came over, my only space was shared with my partner. Sounds all fine and dandy at first, but eventually you start to drive each other nuts. Now that I live there and his friend has moved out, I finally have my own room to relax, store clothes and female necessities, and hog the remote.

2. Something you can wear to an interview

If you’re one of those people who has found their dream internship or is employed, you’re killing it! However, situations change and having a suitable outfit to wear to an interview that indicates you have your shit together is always a good idea. Remember, it’s always better to overdress no matter what job you’re applying to.

3. Someone to hold you accountable

As someone who is pretty self-aware, has a core group of friends and a boyfriend who is brutally honest, accountability isn’t something I’ve ever struggled with. Chances are, I know I’m in the wrong before anyone else has to tell me, and if I know I’m wrong and truly believe I’m wrong, I’ll be the first one to admit to it. Not everyone is this fortunate, so it’s important to have people to call you on your BS when necessary.

4. The ability to say you're sorry

On the heels of number three, the ability to admit when you’re wrong and apologize is something that’s important to learn sooner than later. The fact is, we all make mistakes, and that’s totally okay – we’re human after all. What’s not okay, is making a mistake, wronging someone, or saying something hurtful and not being able to admit that it was wrong because you;re too prideful or have too large of an ego. Saying ‘sorry’ isn’t easy. It can be uncomfortable and awkward, but everyone experiences the same discomfort, which makes the apology even more meaningful. Unless your ego means more to you than your friendship, relationship, job, etc, suck it up and get to apologizing.

5. A passport

Assuming you’re like most millennials and want to travel and see the world and not be confined to one place, you’ll need a passport. Now that 10 year passports are a thing, it’ll be a one-time fee that’ll hold you over for many years and trips to come.

6. A five-year plan

Sure, having goals is great, but goals without a plan on how to achieve said goals will never become more than a dream. So, set some pathways in motion to get you to where you want to be. Go to school, take personal development courses, budget, and set the plan in motion.

7. A savings account

As my parents continue to remind me, I don’t want to just start saving for retirement when I’m their age. Open an RRSP or Tax Free Savings Account and start putting X amount of dollars from every pay into it. Some companies will even match your contributions or at least a certain percentage of them, so it adds up quickly and grows over time.

8. A healthy relationship with your parents

Like many, my relationship with my parents was a bit strained through my rebellious teenage years. They always had my best interests in mind, but I, of course, viewed that as them trying to oppress me, so I argued and rebelled. Almost immediately when I moved away for college, our relationship improved and has only continued to improve since. Your parents want what’s best for you, they don’t want you to make the same mistakes they’ve made, and they have a wealth of knowledge to share with you for experiences you haven’t encountered yet (buying a home, for example). Trust that they’re not out to get you and want to help you succeed and you’ll begin to value their opinion instead of dread it.

Uber Is Reportedly Being Driven From London

Uber could potentially lose its biggest market in London. According to a release from Transportation for London (TfL) on Friday, the reason is simply that "Uber London Limited is not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator licence."

According to TfL, the transportation authorities took issue with the favorite ride-sharing company because they allege that the app didn't properly report criminal offenses, it's problematic approach to obtaining medical certificates and that there were some additional concerns over how their software works.

“I fully support TfL’s decision," London Mayor Sadiq Khan said, according to the Hill. "It would be wrong if TfL continued to license Uber if there is any way that this could pose a threat to Londoners’ safety and security.”

As Uber's largest market, it's set to lose more than 40,000 drivers in this move, the Hill reports. The company also has the option to try to repeal London's decision by September 30 — and, according to Business Insider, they plan to challenge the decision in court.

Black-cab driver groups, former Uber drivers and politicians are partially to blame for London's boot on the app, Business Insider reported, as those groups have alleged that the company doesn't pay enough in taxes, treats drivers poorly, puts passengers at risk and are damaging the black-taxi industry in the city.

This isn't the first time Uber has been banned by a city, but they claim that they have tirelessly worked to make the app safer and place more restrictions to ensure the safety of their passengers.

4 Signs You Can Handle a Part-Time Job in College

College life is stockpiled with unforgettable experiences, lifelong friends and an indispensible education—but it comes at a pretty hefty price. On top of tuition, cash for books, meals and extracurricular adventures seems to flow out of your bank account as soon as it enters. Looking to earn some extra dough without sacrificing all your freedom? A part-time job may be the move. Take a look at these signs to see if you can handle a side hustle while you’re still studying.

1. You’re bored AF

Maybe you’re lightening your course load, or you’ve just mastered the art of working efficiently. Either way, you’ve got a ton of free time, and are looking for a productive activity to help you make money—not spend it—during all of your free afternoons.

Angela Laurito, a sophomore at Pace University, knows the feeling well. “I felt under productive, so I knew I needed a job,” she says. “I'm naturally an over-achiever who functions best on a tight schedule.”

Type-A collegiettes, if you’re feeling antsy, part-time work might be the solution to your problems!

2. You want to sharpen up your skills

You conquer in the classroom, but your resume could use some serious work—work experience, that is. If you’re looking for a concrete way to show future employers that you’re beyond worthy of a hire, a part-time job is a great place to start.

Laura Craig, Associate Director of Career Development at Temple University, agrees that part-time jobs are excellent opportunities to advance your professional capabilities. She highlights that these occupations can “build skills employers are looking for: professionalism, problem solving, leadership and teamwork.  These skills cross a wide range of part-time jobs, and they are there if you’re willing to put forward the initiative to develop them.”

Practice makes perfect—so perfect your office practices with a light year-round job.

3. You need the cash without the full-time stress

For these collegiettes, the problem isn’t if you should snag that extracurricular employment, but how much time you’re going to put in. If you’ve taken on a full-time job, but found that those extra 20 hours a week would be better spent in the library or catching up on your beauty sleep, dialing back to part-time is an excellent option.

Kayleen Parra-Padron, a senior at Florida International University, worked full-time her first two years of school. I'd work 40 plus hours and I'd never be free on the weekends or major holidays. It was the worst. I was failing and dropping classes,” she says. “I currently work part-time as a secretary and I have so much time for homework and assignments. I've made dean’s list two semesters in a row!”

Being a full-time student with a 40-hour/week career puts a lot on your plate. Dropping down those hours will let you focus more on school while still keeping your wallet full!

4. You want to spend more time on your interests

Do you love doing yoga but can’t justify the price of your local studio? Or maybe you are a total bookworm, yet you don’t find enough ways to explore new reading options? Part-time work can be a great method of monetizing your passion.

Craig mentions that work that aligns with one’s interests, “such as someone who loves working out working at the recreation center on campus,” makes part-time jobs for students more enjoyable. Think about hobbies you wish you could spend more time on at school, and use part-time work as a way to get paid to pursue them!

There are plenty of reasons that collegiettes should hunt for part-time work to supplement their studies; however, every student must keep in mind that she is primarily at school to learn! As long as your studies aren’t on hold, snag that job on the side and cushion the blow of those weekly expenses!

Kris Jenner Finally Responded to Those Rumors That Kylie Jenner Is Pregnant

In case you (somehow) missed it, the Internet was in freakout mode yesterday when sources close to Kylie Jenner confirmed that the 20-year-old beauty mogul is four months pregnant with boyfriend Travis Scott.

While no member of the Kardashian family has confirmed or denied the rumors, after what felt like an eternity, Kris Jenner has *finally* commented (sort of) on the whole thing. In an interview with The Cut while attending Milan Fashion Week, the momager extraordinare stayed tight-lipped on the matter.

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

"I just woke up this morning. She’s not confirmed anything," Jenner told The Cut. "I think it’s kind of wild that everyone is just assuming that that’s just happening."

When asked whether she knew the news was going to break, she added, "Something happens every single day. You never know what is going to break at any moment."

Yes, she's keeping things cryptic — but she also didn't exactly deny anything, which is major. Basically, it sounds like she wants to let Kylie handle confirming the news herself.

Meanwhile, fans think Kylie actually could have confirmed the big news a long time ago — as Cosmopolitan notes, she said in a recent episode of Life of Kylie, "I do want kids. Who doesn’t want kids? My dogs feel like my little kids."

7 On-Campus Jobs That Will Look Great on Your Resume

More and more college graduates are realizing that employers care more about their professional experience—internships, co-ops and part-time positions—than they do about their academic merits. That doesn’t mean that your grades don’t matter; but, plagued with the reality of a bleak job market, many college students are already academically competitive. An impressive resume straight out of college is just another way to appear more attractive to recruiters.

Career coach Megan Walls and recruiting professional Sari Klein explains that on-campus student employment often reflects your commitment to hard work and your ability to manage your time responsibly. It’s especially a sign of good character if you are working on campus to contribute to your college tuition.

Luckily, there are tons of on-campus jobs that will offer plenty of real-world experience and help you impress your potential future boss.

1. Academic Tutor

Being an academic tutor allows you to add several diverse skills to your resume, including mentoring, training and development, leadership, accountability, and responsibility.  It lets potential employers know that you are a diligent student and will have no trouble transferring that energy to a full-time position after graduation. Past experience as an academic tutor is also an indication that you take pride in everything that you do. You learn quickly, communicate effectively and lend a helping hand without being asked.

The great news is that this position is open to students of almost all majors. You will interact with students from all areas of your college campus, even if your social circles are very distinct. “In any field, you need to work with people who are different, and whether you're directly managing people or not, there can be teaching moments,” says Alaina Leary, social media editor at Connelly Partners and recent graduate of Westfield State University.

Alaina adds that her experience as a tutor was useful to her almost immediately. “In my first role out of college, I was managing interns, and I had so much valuable experience because of tutoring. Tutoring is really more about growth and strategies than it is about teaching.”

In fact, tutoring is actually one of the best ways to prepare for a role in upper management or even counseling, as it is a position that allows you to work closely with people to help them actualize their full potential.

2. Peer Advisor

A peer advisor is similar to an academic tutor, in that they are responsible for guiding students through the college experience, but their focus is more on the social aspects, like on-campus engagement. One of the first people incoming freshman interact with on campus is their peer advisor, giving the advisor the power and opportunity to strongly influence someone’s first-year experience.

An outstanding peer advisor will be people-oriented, encouraging, supportive and extremely knowledgeable. If you are shy or introverted, taking a job as a peer advisor will help you step out of your comfort zone. Public speaking and presentation skills are just a few of the accolades you’ll be able to add to your resume. You will also become an expert at initiating conversations with just about anyone, especially after brainstorming tons of fun icebreakers for your students.

Chloe Castleberry, a senior at the University of Missouri-Columbia, worked as a peer advisor for her university’s journalism department. She helped incoming freshmen register for classes and answered any questions they had about what to expect at college. She strongly encourages other students to become peer advisors because, she says, “it shows that you're good with people and you’re able to handle students that may seem scared or unsure about college.”

Bonus: Your fellow peer advisors will become some of your closest friends, cheering you on to be the best student leader you can be.

3. Resident Advisor

Resident advisors maintain incredibly demanding jobs. They are required to live on campus as the senior resident of the residence hall and are responsible for handling all resident concerns, especially outside of regular working hours. Consequently, RAs exhibit a myriad of work-related skills, including teamwork, leadership, initiative and conflict resolution, that any potential employer will find desirable.

As an RA or former RA, your most marketable skill is your ability to communicate with others. Your experience mediating roommate disputes, comforting concerned parents, welcoming and motivating new students, organizing hall events and enforcing disciplinary action when needed proves that you are ready for just about any social situation. Future employers will be blown away by how easily you adapt to new and unexpected changes and how well you work under pressure.

4. Teaching Assistant

Teaching assistants typically assist with professor-led classes; they grade papers, lead discussion groups and answer any questions students have about their progress. What distinguishes this position from that of an academic tutor is the added responsibility of leading a class of students rather than just working with one or two. For instance, TAs are asked to deliver consistently engaging presentations to their classes and effectively moderate insightful discussions among groups of 15 to 20 students. Additionally, TAs often endure a much more rigorous training process than tutors because they are a direct representation of the university’s academic standards and policies.

Millennial career expert Jill Jacinto advises that potential employers will be thrilled to see this experience on your resume for several reasons. First, they know that you will respect and uphold established rules and procedures. Additionally, they know that you can work well either in a team setting or individually with minimal supervision. It also doesn’t hurt to know that your professors have recognized and rewarded your intelligence and attention to detail, she explains. But most importantly, potential employers will value your ability to communicate professionally with people at every level of the organization—just like you did as a liaison between your students and the faculty and administration.

5. Library Assistant

Calling all book lovers! Library assistants help acquire, prepare and organize books, periodicals and other relevant materials for use. In addition to assisting with loans and re-shelving, they also sort and update large amounts of computer data including inter-library records, course reserves, and digital collections.

This position is ideal for students who are extremely detail-oriented and freakishly organized, or for students who wish to develop those skills. Meticulous, thorough, critical and well read, you will be an asset to any organization, especially now when so many companies are interested in data analysis.

6. Phonathon Fundraiser

Phonathon fundraisers are students who are responsible for reaching out to alumni and other potential benefactors for financial contributions on behalf of the university. Often, this money is allocated to scholarship funds, building renovations or other campus-advancement initiatives, making it essential to the institution’s success and one of the most highly demanded jobs on campus.

If you absolutely detest talking on the phone (because let’s be honest, most of us do) or if the mere thought of a phone call terrifies you, this is perfect for you! Yes, you read that right. In the real world, making phone calls is a routine part of any job. By challenging yourself to practice your phone etiquette every day, you will become more confident and more outgoing.

Jacinto adds that jobs like these—that require you to persuade a client to act (for instance, to make a donation or purchase a product)—prepare you for almost every step along your professional journey. In the interviewing stages, for example, it prepares you for the “Tell me about yourself” question because you are a natural at talking up something or someone. In fact, she says, “any job you apply for will have some element of selling you will need to address.” It’s important to know how to formulate and deliver a convincing argument—extra points if you can do it over the phone.

7. Desk Assistant

Nearly every department in every building on your college campus needs a desk assistant, so you definitely don’t want to miss out on this employment opportunity! Most new graduates, although perfectly equipped to do the job they studied for, find themselves a little out of their element when faced with administrative tasks at their first real-world positions. Things like scanning and faxing documents and manipulating complicated and often intimidating phone systems aren’t exactly on your class syllabi, but these are skills you’ll probably need regardless of your choice of profession. Jamie Kravitz, a senior at Emerson College, has been a desk assistant for almost three years. “I help promote a friendly atmosphere in the residence hall, ensure that students are safe and secure, answer parent and visitor questions, work with RAs and more,” she says.

Like most other positions on campus, working as a desk assistant allows you to work on your communication skills, especially if you tend to be more reserved. Because you are expected to be warm and personable, you will find yourself making more of an effort. Before you know it, striking up a friendly conversation will come naturally and you’ll be excited to greet new people.

Having an on-campus job listed on your resume says a lot about your character. Immediately, potential employers get insights into what kind of student you are, where your interests lie and how you can be useful at their organization.

Regardless of the type of job you maintain, they will always be interested to know what you have learned. Walls and Klein explain, “If it’s a food service job, there is much to be learned in customer service, leadership, and teamwork; similarly if it’s a job helping other students in the classroom, the student needs to use proper communication, listening and presentation skills.”

At your next on-campus job, try keeping a list of all the skills you’ve improved upon. Add these to your resume and be prepared to discuss them during future interviews.

A Man Who Believes Homosexuality Should Be Illegal Could Be Elected as Alabama's Next Senator

Roy Moore, a former judge who will likely win Alabama's Republican nomination in the race for the state's Senate seat left vacant by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, has a history homophobic and racist remarks, including saying that homosexuality is an "inherent evil" and referring to races as "reds" and "yellows."

Cosmopolitan and the Associated Press report that Moore, who is disliked by the Republican establishment, has a history of comments about race and sexuality that are pretty much just not okay.

Case in point: when talking about the currently divisive political situation in the country, Moore said the U.S. is as divided as it was during the Civil War and that, "We've got blacks and whites fighting, reds and yellows fighting, Democrats and Republicans fighting, men and women fighting."

Um, yikes. As if that weren't bad enough, the Senate candidate said while presiding over a child custody case in 2002 in which the mother involved was a lesbian, that homosexuality is "an inherent evil against which children must be protected." According to CNN, in 2015, Moore also said that he believed "homosexual conduct" should be illegal. He's also been suspended from the bench for failing to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage, and has appeared on a radio show hosted by a pastor who believes in the death penalty for homosexuality.

If Moore wins the nomination, he'll run as the favorite against Democratic nominee Doug Jones. While Trump is endorsing appointed Sen. Luther Strange, he's backed by many of the president's supporters who find his similar anti-establishment message appealing.

5 Things to Make Time For, No Matter How Busy You Are

Ever feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day? As a 20-something, the path towards work-life balance can seem like a distant dream if you find yourself all-consumed by your job. If you identify as a “workaholic,” you might hear yourself using the excuse “I’m too busy!” more than you’d like to avoid situations outside of work, which includes anything from happy hours with friends to getting in an evening workout.

In an attempt to impress your boss, strive for a promotion or make bonus, it can be easy to forget the aspects of life that can add to your happiness and overall well-being. If you’re drowning at your desk, frustrated with your current situation and in desperate need of more time, we’re here to help with a list of areas to make more of a priority without changing your work schedule.

1. Don’t put physical activity on the back burner

After a long day at work, it can be tempting to crash on your couch and watch TV for the rest of the night. Sometimes that is totally acceptable, but it’s vital for your health to make physical activity a key component of your routine.

If you feel as though there simply isn’t enough time to squeeze in a workout at the end of the day, try waking up earlier to go to the gym or exercising during your lunch break. You will find that regular exercise can have a major impact on your job performance by improving your mood, relieving stress and boosting your energy level, which should provide some motivation.

Sydnee Lyons, a second year graduate student at Florida Atlantic University, understands the positive effects of fitness. “I find that when I start a new job, before long I forget all about my workout routine, which really affects not only my fitness but also my mood," she says. "I work hard to remind myself to stay active as much as possible, even when I have a hectic schedule.”

Haley Cahill, a 2015 graduate of Appalachian State University, also needed reminders to make fitness a priority in between work. She says, “I changed my habits so that on Sundays, I write my exercise plan out for the week so that I have it worked into my schedule—nonnegotiable. On the occasion that I decide to skip a Tuesday workout in favor of happy hour, I don't stress about it, because the rest of the week is planned out.”

Improving your physical activity level doesn’t just involve going to the gym more frequently, however. If you find yourself at a desk job that involves little to no mobility, try taking breaks throughout the day to walk around your office and get your blood flowing. Activity bands such as a Fitbit can help hold you accountable to ensure that you’re walking enough during the day.

Some offices also offer standing desks or even treadmills at which you can work, which are great options for staying fit while being productive! If you don’t have access to these things however, periodic breaks can be extremely helpful to avoid a sore neck and shoulders.

2. Make healthy eating part of your routine

We’ve all been there. It’s 9 p.m., and you’re finally packing up your things at the office after a long day. On the drive home from work, you see a McDonald’s with its golden arches suddenly shining brighter than before. You’re not a fast food fanatic, but right now you’re on sensory overload and nothing sounds sweeter than a burger and fries; so, you give in and enter the drive-thru.

While it’s easier to eat something that’s quick, the foods that you choose can positively or negatively affect your performance and mood at work.

Cooking your meals doesn’t have to be boring and time-consuming, however. Meal prep is an increasingly popular trend, where one makes a large portion of the same food (usually during the weekend) and divides it up for the rest of the week. In addition to saving time, it’s also cheaper!

Haley noticed that she struggled to maintain a healthy diet once she left college, but she found tips that worked for her. She says, “I've always been a healthy eater, but working a 9-to-5 job and exercising for an hour or so after work, the last thing I wanted to do was stand over a stove when I got home, which meant fast food or grazing on junk food in the evenings. So I started cooking all my lunches and dinners for the week on Sundays and waking up a few minutes early during the week to make an egg white omelet or other hearty breakfast before work.”

Haley adds that she started entering her nutrition information on the app MyFitnessPal, and attributes her ability to stay on track to having healthy meals fully cooked and ready to heat up on the go.

If you find that it’s too time consuming to meal prep, or perhaps cooking isn’t your forte, try planning out your meals in a journal with options that are in your office’s cafeteria or a local restaurant.

3. Always keep learning

After some point in your job, it might feel as though you’re not learning anything new, and that rather, each day includes the same tasks on repeat. Why not learn something outside of the office instead? Don’t forget that you were continually learning something new in college, either recently or a few years ago, so the transition to a more routine job might seem a bit awkward initially.

If grad school isn’t on your horizon, try taking an evening class in a field related to your work to help you improve, whether online or at a local college. You can also test for a certification in a specific technical tool, such as Photoshop or Google Analytics.

Learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom, however. From reading after work to attending speaking events, it’s easy to broaden your horizons.

4. Rest is essential to strong work performance

After a long day, it’s essential to try and get enough sleep in order to perform your best the next day. However, even after coming home, you might find yourself wired and restless, with your mind only focusing on work.

One tip is to give yourself a technology detox, especially close to the hour that you typically fall asleep. Occasionally it might be necessary to bring some work home with you, but you have to give your eyes a break from your computer screen.

Morgan Dux, who is now in her second year of working full time, immediately saw the benefits of taking a break from technology. She says, “By [the] nature of my work in communications/public relations, I am constantly using technology at work. By listening to podcasts, spending time exercising outside and getting creative in the kitchen, I feel engaged and refreshed. If I'm on my phone or in front of the computer, it feels too much like work.”

Alaina Leary, a Social Content Curator at Connelly Partners and a graduate student at Emerson College, noticed her health deteriorating when she struggled to separate herself from her work. She says, “I stopped taking care of my health. I started getting these incredibly painful migraines out of nowhere. I’ve never had headaches before.”

Alaina learned a big lesson from her ordeal. “I realized I need to prioritize work, but I also need to prioritize my health. It’s important I get time to myself, to re-charge and re-energize every night if possible.”

In order to give yourself proper rest after work, some helpful tips include doing meditation and breathing techniques, curling up with a good book, taking on a hobby or talking to friends and family on the phone.

5. Don’t forget about your friends

You don’t want to be that friend who always turns down plans because you’re too busy; before you know it, it could gradually hurt your relationships as your friends become increasingly frustrated with you.

It’s essential to make your close friends feel like they’re important and worth your free time; after all, they're probably busy, too! Try to Skype or FaceTime with your long-distance friends on a regular basis. If you’re in the same city as some of your friends, work on getting together as regularly as possible. It’s easy to send a text, but it’s more meaningful to grab coffee or drinks.

In becoming more social, you also don’t want to forget about your roommates. After work you might want to immediately lock yourself in your room and pass out, but you’ll find it hard to build solid relationships with them if you hardly see them! Don’t be that roommate who’s always MIA because she's so busy at work.

Instead, spend even a little time each night when you get home asking about their days and checking in. Maybe even schedule in a nightly or weekly dinner, so you have regular time to bond. You don’t get a lot of time to interact with them outside of the weekend, so make your time together count.

Despite a busy work schedule, it’s important to still make time for these key aspects of your life on the quest towards work/life balance. These changes won’t happen dramatically overnight, but if you make small tweaks to your daily routine, you will find that it’s not impossible to make time for these things that can have a really positive effect on you.

Nikki Reed & Ian Somerhalder Apologize for Birth Control Comments; Say Reproductive Coercion 'Is an Extremely Serious Issue'

Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder have apologized for their comments about Somerhalder throwing out Reed’s birth control before she became pregnant, Entertainment Weekly reports. After sharing on a podcast that Somerhalder tossed Reed’s birth control without her knowledge, the couple faced public backlash questioning the role of consent in her pregnancy.

Reed initially took to Twitter to negate those speculating about her reproductive rights. She wrote that she felt unforced in the decision and that “using a funny interview between married people and twisting it to perpetuate gossip is irresponsible.”

Although this was a story that was probably blown out of proportion, Reed and Somerhalder acknowledged those pointing out that Somerhalder's actions could be seen negatively. Reed later posted a joint statement on her Twitter account, setting the record straight.

"To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry," the message read. "That is an extremely serious issue, and women's rights is something that is incredibly important to both of us."

"We never expected a lighthearted interview we did poking fun at each other and how we chose together to get pregnant...to turn into something representing a very serious matter," it continued. "However, if this somehow sheds light on a topic that definitely needs mainstream attention, then we are grateful for the unintended consequence."

Although the couple shared a very private moment with others and received a negative response, they had the class to move past their own opinions and recognize that others have had similar, more unfortunate experiences regarding birth control. Perhaps this incident will become a helpful lesson for their infant daughter one day.

7 Ways to Quickly Adjust To College As a Freshman

It’s that time of the year again! And no, we don’t mean the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. It’s time to start school and for some, that means starting your first year of college. Although you may be dreading the assignments, tests and professors awaiting you come fall, here are seven tips from current collegiettes to help you transition from high school to college.

1. Make time to exercise

Elle Woods said it best ––endorphins do make people happy! When people are happy, they tend to do better on schoolwork and adjust more easily to a new environment. Believe it or not, exercising will help you feel at home on your new campus.

For Julia Ide, a student at Western Washington University, going to the gym is super important. “Run or go to the gym in the afternoon,” Julia says. “With early classes, you’re not going to want to get up even earlier to squeeze a workout in. Do it after you’re done with classes for the day. It will help you to de-stress and focus on your homework.” After a long day of classes, it will be nice to have the “me time” that you deserve. This way, you can decompress and be #fit.

2. Keep a planner

Another huge part of starting college is learning how to manage your time. With college being so new and exciting, there will be a lot of things that you want to try. However, it’s important to know what you can and cannot handle.

Elaina Steingard, a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, suggests keeping a planner to help stay organized. “Don’t be overstressed but also study more,” she says. “It’s mental preparation to know that college will be more work but you can’t overwork yourself.” Keeping a planner is great because you can easily flip to a date and see what upcoming tests and quizzes you have. It’s also a great way to prevent from not turning in assignments.

3. Take time each day to relax

College is busy and hectic, and because of that, it’s easy to get stressed out. Whenever you start to feel overwhelmed, take some time relax so you can start the next day ready to kick some butt.

Katie Roberts, a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, takes 20 minutes out of her day to relax and proposes that incoming freshmen do the same before they start college. “Get in the habit of going to bed earlier, limiting TV time, going on walks, drinking lots of water and having a face cleaning routine,” she says. It may seem tedious, but doing these simple tasks can make or break you during your first semester at college.

4. Learn how to do your laundry

College will be the first time you will truly be on your own. This means that your parents most likely won’t be around to cook or clean for you. Start learning how to do your own laundry, because clean clothes usually give the appearance that you have your life together.

Reilly Tuccinard, a student at the University of South Carolina, made preparations to learn how to take care of herself (and her clothes) early on. “Before I went to college, I made sure I knew everything I could about doing laundry,” she says. “Whites, colors, cold, hot – I made sure I had it down. By doing your own laundry at home, it makes the transition way easier once you get into college and gets you into the routine of actually doing it.” Learning how to do laundry is just one of the skills you’ll need to know before move-in day.

5. Figure out how to study

Learning how you study best may take a few test runs. Studying can be a very individualized thing and there is nothing wrong with that! Just make sure you do what’s helps you because you’re the one that’s going to be taking that intro to biology course.

Something that helped Nicole Bunte, a student at the University of Missouri, was going to the library to do homework. “Going to the library before I went home really helped me stay away from distractions,” she says. Whether your study-spot is the library or the local coffee shop, finding that place before you start college will help you get in the routine of planning ahead, which makes your life that much less stressful.

6. Learn to budget

Another stress inducer that has plagued the broke college student since the dawn of time is, you guessed it, money. Every student should know basic tips to manage their finances. “Learning how to budget is extremely important,” says Hannah Hart, a student at Auburn University. “Use bank apps that offer free financial advising – when you have money in your account, it’s one less thing to stress about.” Budgeting is a scary concept for many collegiettes, but don't fear ––you are not alone! Asking for help is the only way to learn.

7. Find out who your roommate is

Most of the time schools have university chat rooms where you can either find a roommate. If not, Facebook or email usually do the trick.

Grace Dustin, a senior at the University of Missouri-Columbia, introduced herself to her future roommate before move-in day. “It helps to reach out to your roommate ahead of time so you can get a feel for them and get to know them better before you move in,” she says. Meeting anyone new, especially someone you will be living with, for the first time is always nerve-wracking. By reaching out early, you get to break the ice and feel more comfortable when you come to school.

Regardless of anything else, collegiettes, make sure that you are following a routine that is best suited for you. Everyone is different and needs different things to thrive – at the end of the day, college will be (without a doubt) the best four years of your life!

Meghan Markle's Ex-Husband Is Creating a TV Show About Being Left for a British Prince

It looks like things are still going smoothly for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who made their first official appearance together at Toronto’s Invictus Games earlier this weekend. Although I’m loving this relationship and rooting for it to last, Markle’s ex-husband Trevor Engelson might think differently. Cosmopolitan reports that Engelson, a film producer, is currently working on a Fox sitcom about the lead’s ex-wife marrying a British prince. Talk about shade.

The official announcement of the comedy emphasizes that the show is fictional, so the idea isn’t totally based on Markle and Engelson’s actual relationship. “Divorce is hard,” the show’s pitch reads. “Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level.”

Markle and Engelson, who divorced in 2013 after less than two years of marriage, have no kids together, proving that the majority of the show will be fictional material. The idea allegedly came from a conversation between Engelson and a fellow producer about what could've happened if the couple did have children.

As long as these guys aren't trying to deny their source of inspiration, this show could be pretty interesting, but I wouldn't be surprised if it caught the attention of some lawyers before hitting the air.

One Is Dead & At Least Six Are Wounded After a Tennessee Church Shooting

One person was killed and at least six were wounded in a shooting at a Tennessee church on Sunday, CNN reports. An eighth person was also "pistol whipped," or hit by a weapon. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department confirmed the shooting on Twitter, identifying Antioch’s Burnette Chapel Church of Christ as the scene of the crime.

Reports of shots first appeared to police around 11:15 a.m., when a gunman in his mid-20s arrived in the church parking lot as a service was letting out and fatally shot a woman walking to her car. According to NBC News, the other shootings occurred inside the church.

"Six innocent persons inside the church were wounded by gunfire," police spokesman Don Aaron said at a press conference. "They have been taken to area hospitals."

The "pistol whipped" victim tried to confront the gunman before being attacked. Apparently, the victim recovered from the blow and went outside to retrieve his own gun. By the time he was back, the gunman, wearing a "type of neoprene mask," shot himself. He is currently hospitalized with minor injuries.

ABC News says that Aaron is unsure about any connection between the gunman and church members. The Nashville Fire Department revealed in a tweet that all but one of the victims is over 60 years old. Authorities also revealed that unharmed church members were in a safe location and being interviewed by investigators.

Nashville mayor Megan Barry also released a statement, saying, "My heart aches for the family and friends of the deceased as well as for the wounded victims and their loved ones. Their lives have been forever changed, as has the life of their faith community at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ."

Our thoughts are with the Antioch community as they recover from this tragedy.

Taurus: Classic Backpack

This is the OG of school bags. The fact that classic backpacks are both sturdy and reliable is what you’re all about. The best part about the original-style backpack is that they come in every trend and design imaginable. Everything from athleisure to solids to patterned, and of course just solid colors too.

Savanna Tavakoli, a Taurus, and junior at Boston University, says “I always look for something really stylish and unique, in addition to being practical. I like to make sure that my backpack acts as a statement piece in some ways and can also match any outfit I'll potentially wear that year.”

With all the colors and patterns to choose from, you really can’t go wrong with this classic backpack.

Gemini: Floral Backpack

As a Gemini, you have a lively and young spirit, which is captured beautifully in a floral backpack, like the ones by Vera Bradley. The quilted, cloth texture is comfy and the patterns (like Northern Stripes or Pop Art) will have people turning heads because they’re so chic yet eye-grabbing.

Cancer: Duffle bag

Cancer women are spontaneous, so you need to be prepared for any spur-of-the-moment adventure you might have. Enter: the duffle bag. It might sound crazy, but they come in a bunch of different styles (like this faux-leather one from Nordstrom) and will ensure that you have everything you need for yoga class, an early-morning hike, a late night study sesh or wherever you’re going on any given day.

Leo: Quirky Backpack

As a creative and fun-loving woman, you need a backpack that will express your personality. Virgo: Cross-body bag

A cross-body is efficient and simple, just like the Virgo. As someone who is super put-together, you need a bag that can hold all of your books and anything else you may need. A cross-body is a classy way of changing up your school-year style from the classic backpack.

Scorpio: Leather Tote

Classy and a true statement-maker, a leather tote bag is one you can rely on to match your bold personality. Krystal Douglas, a senior at Georgia State, carries a Michael Kors tote because it’s big enough to carry everything she needs. “That’s my bag of choice because I like to not forget anything, including food, my computer, planner, more snacks, etc.,” she says.

This Vince Camuto style (from Macy’s) has all kinds of pockets in it, and even on the front of it, so you can make sure you have everything you need to rule this school year.

Sagittarius: Laptop Bag

As someone who doesn’t even buy textbooks when she can purchase e-books, so what you need is a laptop bag. A laptop bag (like this elegant one from Kate Spade) is sturdy without being bulky. Your no-nonsense style matches perfectly with this sophisticated and straightforward bag.

Capricorn: Leather Backpack

You’re the woman with to-do lists all over her desk and a deep-rooted need to get things done fast. But you also want a bag that is as classic and sophisticated as you are. Nothing says classy like a leather backpack (like this one from Urban Outfitters). You can get them in tons of different designs, but we like ones with buckle straps to give it more character. No matter what style of bag you go for, they will all speak to your timeless sense of style.

From backpacks to duffel bags to satchels, we know you’re going to rock this school year, no matter what bag you carry. The hardest part is picking one that can carry all your stuff and go with your outfits!

We hit so many Halloween highs and lows throughout our college years. On the one hand, we’ll never outgrow parties or our favorite paranormal movies. Name: DeAnne Stidham
Age: 58…going on 25
Job Title and Description: Founder of LuLaRoe
College Name/Major: Brigham Young University

Instagram Handle:@deannelularoe and @lularoe

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

As I’m sure you hear often, there is no such a thing as a typical day! As fast as our LuLaRoe business is growing, it is continually changing, which keeps things fresh and new, each and every day. We are seeing amazing things happen! Being the owner of a company, I see my primary role as a motivator. I strive to figure out who I should serve next and who needs a pep talk. I embrace being a role model and am so grateful that I can do my best work here by helping others – and that’s what I strive to do every day.

What is the best part of your job?

Seeing others grow. It’s so rewarding when I see someone who starts out fearful – someone who doesn’t think they have the confidence to succeed – and am able to help them work through it to a place where they themselves discover that they’ve got this! Like any business, success with LuLaRoe can be all about having the right mindset – it’s all in how you look at it! Are you capitalizing on the opportunities or getting hung up on the challenges? Are you learning and seeking out growth or spending too much time looking at what other people are doing? So, the best part of my job is, hands down, watching people grow. I love to encourage people to understand, "you’ve got this!"

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

I’m glad you asked, as this is a story that really has come to exemplify what LuLaRoe is all about! I actually started out by blazing my own path. Many years ago, when my children were much younger, I found a man that had set up a garment market at fairs and swap meets. He was selling overstock items from big name brands at a discount. I convinced him to provide me with some stock for in-home dress parties that I could throw for my friends and family. And, I sold more than 300 pieces! Because he didn’t want to be in the business of selling dresses in homes, we came to an agreement where I could buy wholesale and that’s how I made the business work for my family for many years. I needed the freedom to be an independent, stay at home mom, and I created the path to make it happen.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

There are many! Here are just a few of my favorites: "The more you give, the more you get." "Look at my world, I created it." "If it is to be, it is up to me." "See a need, fill a need" – from the movie Robots. And, some of the best ones ever, come from my Mom: “Service is the price I pay for the space I occupy,” “Happiness is a choice” and “Happiness is grateful appreciation."

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

I’ve learned so many things along the way with LuLaRoe. With the blessing of very quick growth for our company comes the challenges that arise even quicker. What I’ve learned is to make decisions quickly and to shift course to accomplish the changes that are needed. I’ve also learned the importance of listening – especially when there are people smarter than you in the room. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you!

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

Every day, I’m blown away by how many people want to be a part of this. I’m full of so much gratitude that people from all walks of life (different ages, financial situations, education levels and life experiences) want to be a part of LuLaRoe. Every day is a surreal experience, as we hear so many stories of how LuLaRoe is having a positive impact on women and families in particular.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

We look for positivity. We want people who are yearning to offer something to the company. We also look for people that are passionate and want to progress in their lives and careers. We want to be there with them and help achieve their dreams!

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

Go for it! Embrace it! Don’t get discouraged or compare yourself to others. Give yourself permission to succeed. Embrace the good with the bad as you embark on the roller coaster of business. With experience comes confidence!

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

When someone tells me what they want. If they say, ‘I want to make a difference, serve this company and I will do whatever it takes to learn and listen and move into different positions to gain as much experience as possible.’ We want to help people grow and to really find themselves. Sometimes you don’t know what you’ll be good at until you try.

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

The NFL Takes a Stance Against Donald Trump

After President Donald Trump went on a Twitter rant against NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, football teams across the country knelt during the anthem on Sunday, occasionally alongside team owners. Others stood and locked arms with each other, including Tom Brady, who has received some heat for his questionable political stances. The movement particularly struck a chord at the Lions-Falcons game in Detroit, where anthem singer Rico Lavelle knelt down at the end of the song.

A College Student Survives Three Days Trapped in a Cave

19-year-old Lukas Cavar became trapped in Indiana's Sullivan Cave while on a trip with the Indiana University spelunking club, Teen Vogue says. Facing a closed entrance, Cavar was left to lick on Clif bar wrappers and water on cave walls in order to survive. When his parents reported him missing, club leaders returned to the sight and opened the cave entrance.

"We had a failure in our leadership to closely follow all these safety procedures," the club's president said in a statement. "The risk that our member was exposed to as a result of these failures is a vivid reminder of why we have protocols."

A Woman Freaks Out Over a Service Dog in a Restaurant

Huffington Post reports that the owner of the Delaware-based Kathy's Crab House & Family Restaurant posted a video of a customer ranting over the presence of a veteran's service dog. Customer Ciara Miller refused to stay in the restaurant because of the dog, proclaiming, "I'm leaving because the food is nasty and there's a dog."

Former Army National Guardsman Bill Austin requires a service dog for his post-traumatic stress disorder. When someone in the video reminded Miller that the dog is needed because Austin "fought for our country," she took things to the next level.

"My husband's dad fought for the f***ing country!" she yelled."So what? It's still nasty to me! It should be a separate section for a fucking animal!"

Miller says that she doesn't regret the intensity of her reaction, but the restaurant apologized for the encounter on its Facebook page.
