What to Do When You See Last Semester's Crush for the First Time

$

The beginning of fall semester can be stressful. Everything from making sure your pens from last year still have ink, to picking up your textbooks, moving in to your new room, choosing an outfit worthy of the first day of class and, most importantly, an outfit that shows off how much hotter, tanner and fitter you have gotten over the summer for last semester’s crush. However, an outfit can only do so much.

Your crush from spring semester may have been a guy you hooked up with a few times but weren’t “hooking up with,” or maybe something a little more serious, or maybe just a love-from-afar kind of crush that you never had the guts to do anything about.

While you may be tempted to hide behind the nearest building when you first see him on campus, instead, try some of these effective and, at times, very strategic flirting tips from my two suave friends, a senior at Cornell and a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill (let’s call them Jake* and Sam*).

Scenario 1: You end up next to each other in line at the dining hall.

Do not keep talking to your girl friend and pretend like you have somehow managed not to notice he is standing right next to you; otherwise the next 10 minutes are about to be the most painstakingly awkward moments of your life. Instead, embrace the nervous excitement churning in your stomach and say hello. Have the regular post-summer conversation, like updates on internships and vacations, and at some point casually slip in a compliment.

Jake suggests, “Compliment him on a summer improvement. If he had a really cool summer job tell him, ‘That sounds so interesting,’ or if he explains he went to the beach, say, ‘I can tell, you look really tan.’ If you can’t think of anything creative, just genuinely smile and tell him ‘You look good!’ Then he will walk away from the conversation thinking about you and how you thought he looked good. It will definitely turn him on and get him thinking about your chemistry last spring.”

Scenario 2: You walk into your classroom and discover him sitting in the third row.

As endless weeks of steamy study sessions and excuses to meet up before and after class start flashing before your eyes, compose yourself and focus on finding a strategic seat.

Jake's advice for big lecture classes is to sit behind your crush. He says, “Sit behindhim a few rows back and a little to the side, so you can catch him checking you out. On the first day of class, guys love to sit and watch all the girls coming in to the classroom and get excited about all the new hot girls they will have excuses to spend time with.”

Plus, if you sit in frontof him, you will most likely feel extremely self-conscious and imagine he is staring at your love handles or that stain on the back of your shirt you thought no one would notice. After class, text him something like: “I noticed we have [blank] class together. This should be a good semester.” It will have him excitedly wondering if you meant “good” because of him, or because of the syllabus.

If it’s a smaller, more intimate class setting like a seminar, Sam says, “You definitely want to be in the same row and within conversation distance. It would be awkward if you sat too far away because you will obviously both acknowledge each other’s presence. Have a friendly conversation and act really excited to have a class together, and shoot him flirtatious smiles throughout the class whenever the professor says something funny or interesting.”

Scenario 3: You wave to each other crossing the quad but it’s too awkward of a distance to have a conversation.

This is the perfect time for a first text. A few minutes after you saw each other, text him: “Too bad I missed you. We should catch up soon.” You don’t need to be overly flirtatious here, and you may be tempted to add a smiley emoticon for an obvious clue that you still like him.

However, Jake has pretty strong feelings about emoticons: “Emoticons are boner killers.” This might not be the same for all guys, but a smile is insinuated without a colon and a parenthesis. Hopefully he will text you back, and if so, follow the tips explained in Scenario 4.

Scenario 4: He texts you out of the blue.

Don’t freak out, but this may be the single most important thing to ever happen to you. Just kidding—sort of. The fact that he texted you without any stimulant on your end shows that he has been thinking about seeing you and is excited you are both back on campus. Ask a question back to maintain the conversation, and after a couple of texts, stop being so vague about your summer and start being specific, telling jokes and flirting.

Sam explains, “Don’t talk about academics or your internship; talk about fun, unusual and adventurous things you did over the summer that will make him interested and have the conversation continue for a long time.” Hopefully, it will end in one of you suggesting meeting up over the weekend or for a meal.

Scenario 5: You run into him at a wild first-weekend-back party.

This scenario will require some constraint on your end. In your drunken haze, you will think to yourself, “Darn it, what were those tips in that great article on Her Campus?” – or something along those lines. Here is the key point to remember:

DO NOT hook up (no making out, nothing) the first night you run into each other coincidentally. You don’t want him to think of you as the surefire hookup for a weekend. However, both Jake and Sam agree that you also do not want him to think, “Oh my god, why didn’t she want to hook up with me? Is she over me?”

Instead, the ever-strategic Jake suggests you create a false time constraint. “Casually work into conversation that you promised your friend you have to stop by this other party. If he wants to come with you he will follow you there, or you should text him later and invite him: ‘Hey this party is really fun. You should come.’ That way, he will think ‘She didn’t hook up with me because she had to go somewhere’ rather than ‘she wanted to run away from me because she doesn’t like me anymore.’” If he ends up coming to the party, then it’s clear he still likes you and the serious flirting can start. Then, it’s up to you if you want to hook up.

(Note: Don’t freak out if he doesn’t fall into your trap and come to the other party; it’s possible his friends convinced him to go elsewhere, or countless other events of an unpredictable night at college.)

Scenario 6: You look up from your laptop in the library and realize he is doing homework at a desk right near you.

Now, there are two choices: you either wait for him to notice you and come up to you, or you make the move. If you are lucky, you will catch him staring at you and give a little wave or a smile and nod.

If you want to make the move, Jake tactfully explains, “You want to walk past him as an excuse for conversation, but you can only do what your surroundings present you with for a destination: a friend, the printer, the bathroom, the water fountain. Walk towards the pretend destination and act surprised and happy to run into him, and have a quick and friendly conversation.” Remember, he might be caught up with homework and will probably only be receptive to a short yet flirtatious hello.

Scenario 7: You are with a group of girl friends and run into him with his group of guy friends at the go-to Sunday breakfast place.

We saved the trickiest situation for last. When we were talking to Jake and Sam, they both admitted to being stumped for the perfect way to handle it. Jake admits he “hates the showdown of the crews,” because groups of friends get in the way and make this first encounter more awkward than it should be. It’s good to note that guys are just as uncomfortable in this situation as girls are; friends can be intimidating and might throw you off your game.

Amidst the rounds of polite hugs and overly-excited “Heys!” between groups, make sure you hug him a little tighter, and flash him a brighter smile, and have a slightly longer greeting than you do with all his friends so he realizes you are more excited to see him. Later shoot him a text about the encounter: “It was great to see you at [blank], maybe next time we can run into each other on purpose,” or anything that implies you should have more coincidental run-ins in the future.

Keep these flirty tips in mind for the first week of fall semester, and hopefully you will feel well prepared and resist the urge to hide when you suddenly cross paths. Love is a battlefield, and sometimes it requires a little strategy to nudge it in the right direction.

Chicago Is Suing the Trump Administration Over Threats of Cutting Funding for the City

Yet more eye-roll inducing Trump news this Monday. Before we start, let's just get it out of our system first.

We good? Okay, let's do this.

The city of Chicago is planning to sue the Trump administration, according to Reuters. The reason? The administration has threatened to cut funding for sanctuary cities that fail to cooperate with the national government's efforts to enforce stricter immigration laws. More specifically, Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently announced that cities will not receive public safety grants unless they give immigration authorities unlimited access to jails, and give a two-day notice before releasing anyone wanted for immigration violations. Chicago would be one of the cities affected by the funding cuts.

“Chicago will not let our residents have their fundamental rights isolated and violated," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel said during a news conference.

Trump has been targeting Chicago since the beginning of his campaign because of the city's high murder and crime rate, and it seems that cutting funding is his next tactic. But this move isn't a straightforward way to lower rates of illegal immigration—it could have other serious consequences.

For example, police and city officials say that the funding cuts will actually make Chicago less safe, because immigrants will be less likely to report crimes out of fear that they'll be deported if they go to the authorities.

Chicago isn't alone in their issues with the administration's plans. The state of California is thinking about filing a similar suit, according to Reuters.

A Google Employee Wrote a 10-Page Anti-Diversity Manifesto, & People Are Pissed

In an internal memo passed around on Friday, a Google employee criticized the company’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. The memo, which was first reported on by Motherboard, and later published in full by Gizmodo on Saturday, quickly sparked backlash both within the company and in public online.

The 10-page document, allegedly written by a male software engineer, argued that the lack of women within the male-dominated tech industry is due to biological differences between men and women. “We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism,” the author wrote, going on to say that women “prefer jobs in social or artistic areas," while men “may like coding because it requires systemizing.” The employee went on to call out Google’s “left-leaning” workplace culture and argued that conservative Googlers have been alienated in that environment.

Danielle Brown, the newly hired VP of Diversity, Inclusion, and Governance at Google, released a statement that denounced the anti-diversity views held by the author of the memo. Brown's statement read, “Many of you have read an internal document shared by someone in our engineering organization, expressing views on the natural abilities and characteristics of different genders, as well as whether one can speak freely of these things at Google. And like many of you, I found that it advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.”

Brown later went on to say that Google embraced alternate viewpoints, including political viewpoints, so long as they “work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws.”

Google, like other companies in Silicon Valley, has a long history of diversity issues. According to a diversity report published in June, 69 percent of Google’s workforce is male and 56 percent are white. Women comprise only 25 percent of leadership roles and 20 percent of tech jobs.

The engineer's identity has not been revealed, but CNBC reports that he works under Google VP Ari Balogh.

What to Wear to Every Event During Sorority Rush

College is the perfect place to join clubs, meet friends and figure out what you’re passionate about. For many, rushing and joining a sorority is on their bucket list to make the most out of their four years. The process starts with rush or recruitment week, and dressing to impress is crucial. Each school, sorority and event has a slightly different dress code, but here's the gist of what to wear for every stage of rush.

House Tours

House tours are usually the most casual event, so you have a lot of flexibility with what to wear. Ashleigh, who is in a sorority at Illinois State University, says that the house tours are a more relaxed round where you see the different sorority houses. At her school, girls are given a rush T-shirt, which they can wear with any pants. This is the perfect time to whip out your favorite jean shorts or boyfriend jeans, because that will match with any style of rush shirt they give you. Ashleigh wore her rush T-shirt with patterned shorts. Since all you’re required to wear is the tee, you can add any bottoms that match, and then finish the look with open-toed shoes (any excuse not to wear high heels is a plus for me). Since it’s less formal, try pairing the outfit with some tan sandals to celebrate the summer weather!

Gabby, who is in a sorority at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, didn’t have required T-shirts during tours, but she also chose more casual clothing. While walking through the different sorority houses, she wore lacy black shorts, a nice top, a cardigan and sandals. I’m a fan of Target’s sandals since they’re affordable and cute (like these, $19.99 at Target), although you can also wear expensive, genuine leather sandals if you want a long-lasting pair.

Sisterhood and Philanthropy events

Every college and council has a slightly different rush or recruitment schedule, but the welcome rounds, open house, sisterhood events and philanthropy events are typically medium-level of formal. At her college, Ashleigh says the dress code is “cute but casual” and includes sundresses, rompers or a shirt/shorts combo paired with heels or sandals

The best part about welcome rounds is that some schools break it in half, where you see half the chapters one day and the other half the next, so Ashleigh was able to wear the same thing twice. She wore a blue sundress with nude wedges and simple earrings on the first two days. “This can help save money and allow girls to pick out an outfit they really like and feel comfortable in,” she says. For the philanthropy round, Ashleigh wore a cute but conservative romper with sandals.

During the philanthropy event, Gabby also wore a romper, along with a light cardigan and sandals. She chose a flowered sundress, light cardigan and sandals for the sisterhood event. This is a great opportunity to pull out your favorite summer romper (like this one or this one, $22.90 and $24.90 from Forever 21).

When Sammy went through recruitment two years ago at Kent State University, she wore a cold-shoulder, floral romper with sandals one day. Another day, she picked out dark wash jeans, sandals and a tank top blouse with a keyhole neckline. She likes to think of the first round as fashionable business casual, because "you still want to look put together but not dressed super formally." For the second round, which is a little fancier than the first, Sammy donned an Olive and Oak black and white marble dress with black Dr. Marten boots. Take note: even boots are acceptable and trendy during recruitment.

Preference Round

Preference round or preference night is the most formal event. At Illinois State University, this is when the girls go to their last two houses. “This is the most serious day of rush week, and is also the day when girls should wear a nicer dress and heels,” Ashleigh advises. At Cal Poly, Preference Round is when the sorority shows you what makes their sisterhood special, so it’s a formal event. At Kent State University, Preference Round is the dressiest, but still not homecoming or cocktail attire fancy.

So what did these students wear? Ashleigh wore her nicest dress of the week with nude heels and a chunky necklace. Gabby picked a short, flowy blue dress with brown wedges. Sammy chose a black shift dress from Aritzia with slash zipper pocket details and sandals.

“For the third round, Preference Round, I would recommend wearing a dress with nice sandals or heels/wedges. I would go a little fancier than just a sun dress but nothing too formal,” Sammy recommends. Since rush or recruitment often involves walking and standing a lot, it’s smart to opt for comfier wedges to dress up a look.

So how formal do you need to be?

Okay, so you’re ready to start picking pieces that are recruitment-ready. Most importantly, choose comfortable clothes. "Rush week is LONG and you don't want to be worrying about your outfit instead of the process," Ashleigh says. Gabby agrees that comfort should be a priority and suggests that you "think of it like what you might wear on a first date. Wear something you feel cute and confident in.” This also applies to shoes—Sammy explains the main reason she wore flat sandals was because she’d be standing in them for long periods of time.

And no matter whether you decide to shop or pack what you have, keep it professional and classy. "If you have to second guess whether your dress it too short, low cut or not nice enough, then don't wear it," Ashleigh says. This applies to all rounds—look professional. "No ripped jeans/clothes, no butts, no boobs and no backs. Stray away from anything with major cutouts, low necklines and super short hemlines."

If you decide to buy new clothes for rush, make sure they fit with your current style. Utilize those back to school clothes—or check out some affordable items at Forever 21. “Don't go out and buy something that doesn't express who you are or buy something just because it’s ‘new,'" Ashleigh says. Basically, as long as you keep it classy, you can mix and match with necklaces, dresses, shorts, sandals and wedges to craft the perfect look for every recruitment event. A great rush outfit will make you confident and ready to make your first friends in college.

Trump Tweets During Vacation, Criticizes Media & Says His Political Base Is ‘Stronger Than Ever’

In a series of tweets from his golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey, where Trump is taking a 17-day working vacation, the president ranted that the media was ignoring his accomplishments and claimed that his base was "stronger than ever," The Washington Post reported.

Trump cited "record Stock Market, border security, military strength, jobs" along with the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch as examples of what his administration has been able to accomplish. Trump's barrage of tweets come amidst criticisms of the president from both the left and the right. Conservatives that support Trump are worried about the GOP's low record in passing important legislation, particularly their failure to repeal Obamacare, while liberals denounce his alleged collusion with Russia and bigoted statements, including recent tweets claiming he would ban transgender personnel from the U.S. military.

President Trump's favoribility has also declined in polls. For example, according to a poll released by Quinnipiac University on August, Trump reached a new low point in his approval numbers, with 61 percent of Americans disapproving of the job he is doing compared to 33 percent approving. Those numbers show a decline from Quinnipiac's June survey, which showed the president with 55 percent disapproval and 40 percent approval, according to ABC News. According to the university, these represent the "lowest approval and highest disapproval number since he was inaugurated."

A July Gallup poll reported that Trump has also lost a large amount of support in states that he won a large number of votes, including Wyoming, North Dakota, and West Virginia. In these states, Trump's approval rating has declined by 20 points or more.

In his tweets, Trump also criticized Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), calling him a "phony Vietnam con artist" after Blumenthal appeared on CNN to voice his support for continued investigation in Russian meddling of U.S. elections, according to the Post.

Blumenthal was criticized in 2010 for stating that he "served in Vietnam," when in reality, he spent his Marine service in the United States. Blumenthal has stated that he misspoke, and regretted doing so. Now that Trump has brought it up again seven years later, Blumenthal fired back with a tweet of his own and yet another reminder of the Russia probe.

Trump wasted no time throwing some shade right back.

But despite the ongoing investigation, failed attempts at healthcare reform and falling poll numbers, Trump seems confident overall, claiming his base is only getting stronger and decrying the media for more "fake news."

The Night's Watch Capes on 'Game of Thrones' Are Literally Just IKEA Rugs

Is anyone else fangirling over the new season of Game of Thrones? Actually, forget that. I’ve been fangirling over Game of Thrones since the pilot. And the fact that Michele Clapton, the costume designer for the first five seasons of GoT, revealed that the Night’s Watch capes are literally just modified IKEA rugs makes me love Game of Thrones even more. I guess everyone, including TV characters, can use some IKEA in their life.

Clapton shared the clever IKEA hack during a lecture at The Getty Museum in Los Angeles last year. Starting at the 27:31 mark of the below video, she describes how the costume team modifies the rugs to give them an aged look. “We take anything we can. We cut, and then we shaved them, and then we added strong leather straps, and breakdown which is like a religion on Game of Thrones.” FYI: Breakdown is the process of making a costume look worn or distressed. (So, sort of like the DIY jeans I made last weekend?)

Thanks to PEOPLE and BuzzFeed, diehard Game of Thrones fans might be able to buy the exact rugs Clapton used. BuzzFeed guesses the show used the RENS white sheepskin rug while PEOPLE thinks the TJEN white rug is the more likely choice.

Basically this proves what we already knew: IKEA is quite possibly the greatest place on earth. Even a TV show with a budget of $10 million per episode uses their products.

According to Us Weekly, former Bachelor Juan Pablo Galavis has married model girlfriend Osmariel Villalobos in a secret, intimate ceremony in Miami, Fla.

Te amo Esposo Mío. Foto: @andreinaduven y @patrickdolande GRACIAS por capturar este inolvidable momento

A post shared by Osmariel Villalobos (@osmariel) on

In 2014, Galavis became the first Latino to star on The Bachelor after appearing on The Bachelorette the previous year. He didn’t find lasting love on the show—although he gave his final rose to Nikki Ferrell (sans proposal), the pair split seven months after the show ended.

Luckily for the Venezuelan ex-soccer star, the tables have turned. His new wife, who is also Venezuelan, gushed about the love of her life on Instagram. She wrote in Spanish, "THANKS to so many people who worked with me in SECRET to make this dream come true." Several close friends confirm that the two are madly in love and that Villalobos shares a special bond with Galavis’ eight-year-old daughter, Camila.

Although the Miami ceremony came as a surprise to many, Juan Pablo and his bride will host a second celebration in Venezuela to include more of their loved ones.

It would've been nice to see Juan Pablo find love on national TV, but, alas, they can’t all be Evan and Carly.

6 Tips for Tackling a Phone or Video Interview

$

0

Whether you’re looking to get an internship or a job, it’s inevitable that you will be faced with a phone or video interview at some point. On one hand, these types of interviews are great because you can do them anywhere and they give you the freedom to interview without having to make the trip in person. On the other hand, they aren’t exactly like a normal interview, which means they come with their own set of rules and formalities. To give you all the information you need to rock your next phone or video interview we talked to Maddie Schmitz, publicity assistant at Penguin Random House and former Her Conference speaker. So take notes, because with these tips you’ll be ready to tackle any interview.

1. Know your interviewer

This is a universal tip, whether you have an in-person or digital interview. Not only should you research the company, but also the person conducting the interview. We’re not talking CSI background checks, but a little digging on LinkedIn to see some of his or her past experience can’t hurt. Understanding who you’re talking to can help guide the way you answer questions.

“Check to see if there are any alumni from your university who currently work at the company, and ask if you can ask them about company culture and what their favorite things are about working at there,” suggests Schmitz. “I work in book publishing, for example, and during a phone interview an interviewer asked which of that particular publishing house's books I had read recently—luckily I had written down a list of recently published books and kept the notes close by during my interview, so I could answer!”

Being over prepared is always better than underprepared, so taking notes and keeping them close by is a trick you should use during phone interviews. For video interviews it’s still great to keep notes, just remember to focus on the interviewer. It’s completely acceptable to take notes during an interview, so writing your prepared notes on the same paper you’ll take notes on is a good trick to make it look less obvious.

2. Know your greeting

For an in-person interview this seems fairly obvious, but for a phone interview especially, this is a super important step. It sets up the tone of your entire interview, so answering confidently it key. One huge mistake collegiettes make is answering the phone with “hi” or “hello.” This response is confusing because your interviewer doesn’t know if you’re the right person, leaving him or her having to ask who is on the other end of the line. This interaction puts you off to an awkward start and can leave you feeling shaky for the rest of the interview.

To avoid this uncomfortable situation, Schmitz suggests, “When you first greet an interviewer, a good start is ‘Hi [name], this is [your name]. Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with me today!’ By saying the interviewer's name out loud at the beginning of the call, he or she will likely feel instantly more connected to you (and it'll help you remember his or her name for the rest of the interview)!” If you’re not sure how to address the interviewer, check out how they sign off on their emails to you (assuming you set up the interview via email). If they sign off with just their first name it’s fine to refer to them that way. If you don’t have any emails to reference and you’re still not sure, it’s always appropriate to refer to him or her as “Ms. or Mr.” Once you’ve set up your interview to succeed, you’ll be much more confident in answering questions and sound prepared and focused.

3.  Know what to do if you need to call the interviewer

This is a rare circumstance, but on occasion the interviewer will ask you to call them. If this is the case, you might be faced with the impossible question of whether you should be early, on time or a little late in calling. But don’t get too caught up in the logistics of it all; your best bet is to call on time. If thy don’t pick up for some reason—you never know, it could happen—then leave a brief message with your name, reason for calling and number.

“[Calling on time] shows that you are taking the interview seriously and are respectful of the interviewer's time,” says Schmitz. Being prompt is always the best way to go, it shows that you’re serious about the position and reflects your punctuality in the workplace.

4. Be prepared for multiple interviewers

Sometimes you’re faced with a panel of interviewers. This is so multiple employees can get to know you and determine how well you would fit into the company. Oftentimes they are also people you would be working with if you secured the position. But whether you’re face-to-face or over the phone, panel interviews are daunting. It can easily feel like you’re being ganged up on, so it’s important to understand how to attack a panel interview.

Schmitz says the preparation for this interview is similar to a normal interview. “[T]ake a peek at each person's LinkedIn page to figure out if they are the same level, professionally, and try to get an understanding of how each person relates to the others within the company,” says Schmitz. “Do they all work closely on the same team? Does one work just with interns/new hires? During the interview, try to engage with each person on the call equally and call people by name to avoid any confusion.”

This last tip is important because thing can get a little confusing over the phone—you remember three-way calling with your friends in fifth grade. For phone interviews you should also jot each interviewer’s name and position to help keep things straight.

5. Know the types of questions they might ask

Obviously it’s impossible to know what questions your interviewer ask you because there are countless choices, but for these types of interviews you can usually predict the type of questions you will be asked.

“Phone and video interviews are generally first round, screening interviews,” says Schmitz. “The interviewer (often an HR person) is looking to see how you think and approach problems, how you express yourself, and what your overall personality is like, in addition to making sure that you have the requisite experience and skills that are listed in the job description.” Because these interviews are typically preliminary, it’s best to expect that you will be asked about items on your resume and background information.

Schmitz also says, “some phone interviews are more casual, and interviewers will ask questions like ‘Where do you usually get your news?’ or ‘What kind of books do you like to read?’ These questions help the interviewer understand more about your general interests and determine whether you'll be a good fit for the culture of the company.” Knowledge about what the company does will help you in these situations, which is why your preparation will pay off in the interview and is extremely important.  You can even check out popular sites like Glassdoor to see what the job interview process is like, and maybe some frequently asked interview questions. The more information you gather, the better.

6. Find a good spot and come prepared

Just because you aren’t going to an office doesn’t mean you can just chill in your living room or at a Starbucks for a phone or video interview. You want to limit all distractions, so find a quiet spot and get there half an hour before your interview to ensure everything works correctly and that you can go over your notes. For a video interview you want to make sure the wall behind you is plain—it doesn’t look super professional to have old Twilight posters behind you. This way, your interviewer will be focused on you—not all the distracting things around you. In addition, remember to dress for a video interview like you would dress for an in-person interview. The last thing you want to do is accidently stand up while you’re wearing pajama bottoms. You can also dress professionally for a phone interview, but the most important thing is to feel comfortable. Wear something that makes you feel confident and ready to go. Lastly, Schmitz says, “keep a glass of water at hand! And smile while you're talking—that energy translates across the phone.” Also be sure to find a space with reliable wifi. If your apartment’s wifi isn’t great reserving a private study room at the library is a good alternative. Give yourself some time to get comfortable and relaxed; with all the prep work you’ve done the only thing left is to nail your interview!

Interviews can be stressful, and whether they’re on the phone or through video, if you’re prepared mentally and physically you’ll be ready to go. So keep these tips in mind and be ready to start accepting job offers!

Microblading seems like a great idea… in theory. It's the technique of semi-permanently tattooing your eyebrows on, generally to make your brows seem fuller. Trust me, these aren’t your great aunt’s tattooed, blue-tinged eyebrows (you all know what I’m talking about). Microblading is generally done by a professional, who,  through the magic of tattooing, is able to create the natural looking brows of your dreams.

The reason I’m not currently rocking semi-permanent eyebrows and why many other women also choose not to is because of the risk involved. Just like with virtually any procedure, there is a chance that things might not go as planned. Unfortunately Amanda Coats, a single mother from Melbourne, Australia, is the perfect example of this. In a lengthy Facebook post, Coats explained that she noticed from the moment she arrived to get her brows done, her technician wasn’t acting professionally. “[She] was very rushed, going in and out of the room attending to other clients during my procedure, and also doing another eyebrow tattoo at the same time — she did not put new gloves on each time which does not keep things sterile.”

Its important to note here that whenever you feel uncomfortable in a situation such as this, let your technician or a manager know. Speak in a polite (yet firm) way that you are unhappy with what is occurring. Not only are you are paying customer, but you’re the one who has to live with the end results, so make your concerns heard!

According to the DailyMail Australia, the next day Coats woke up in pain, and phoned the salon right away too voice her concerns. “'I rang her straight away and said skin was coming off and she put it down to color fading.” The symptoms and pain continued, and Coats experienced swelling and pus coming out of her eyebrows.

Coats did not give up, and continued to contact the salon through every available method to inform them of the issues that were occurring due to the microblading. She alleged that they “did not care.” Eventually, Coats needed to seek medical help, and claims the doctor had to prescribe her antibiotics, antibiotic cream and steroids.

The salon, however, tells a different story. The owner says that Coats did not contact them about the infection until two and a half weeks after the microblading took place. “There's no way we could be possibly responsible for the infection at that stage, two and a half weeks after the procedure. My wife has done over 2,000 of these procedures, and we’ve never had any issues of infection. We’ve been unable to defend ourselves, and we are taking action against Amanda for defamation and that’s in the process of being issued.”

It has been reported that both parties have sought for legal representation. Lets hope that this gets solved … and that this story hasn’t completely deterred you from the prospect of microblading your brows!

Someone on the Internet Created an Awful Fake Starbucks Promotion to Target Undocumented Immigrants

Whenever Starbucks offers a deal or promotion, we're not ashamed to admit that we'll be the first one rushing to our nearest Starbs in order to get our hands on free or discounted caffeine - but there's one Starbucks promo currently making its rounds on the Internet that you should definitely steer clear of.

BuzzFeed News reports that members of the message board site 4chan quietly plotted a fake promotion in order to lure undocumented immigrants into Starbucks stores on August 11 and presumably, catch them for being undocumented.

They've called the awful promotion "Dreamer Day," creating super realistic posters advertising 40% off the entire menu for undocumented immigrants. While tons of social media users have already spread the promotion thinking it was real, an error in the spelling of 'Frappuccino' has (thankfully) allowed some people to realize that something was a bit... off about the whole thing.

Luckily, Starbucks is already working on damage control and setting the record straight. The company has already responded to many of the fake posters circulating the Internet tweeting, "This is completely false. Starbucks is not sponsoring any such event. Please do not spread misinformation."

While the company has yet to release an official statement about the cruel "Dreamer Day" campaign, a few Internet heroes are spreading the word that it's actually just a hateful scam. (And let's be honest, 40% off anything at Starbucks was kind of hard to believe in the first place anyways.)

The Juicy Couture Tracksuit Is Getting A Major Update & We're About It

Looks like tracksuits just might be back - and we have Juicy to thank for it. With the recent rise of the athleisure trend, Juicy Couture was quick to jump on the bandwagon and has appointed celebrity stylist, Jamie Mizrahi, as the new creative director and point person to update the classic tracksuit. Mizrahi, whose clients include Katy Perry, Riley Keough and Leighton Meester, told WWD, “I am not trying to reinvent Juicy. It has such a brand identity already—carefree, tongue-in-cheek fashion. What I’m doing is taking the history that is so special and continuing to make it feel fun and wearable by bringing back silhouettes and materials and making them work for the modern women.”

The brand also has plans to expand their athleisure line to include as many options as possible for the "modern" woman. Although we have no idea what Juicy really has in store, Katy Perry just might - in a velour mini, that is.

Ashley Graham Had to Skip Last Year's Met Gala Because She Couldn't Find a Designer to Dress Her

Fabulous full-figured models like Ashley Graham are proof that women who aren't straight-sized are finally getting more visibility in the fashion industry, but we still have a long way to go. Case in point: Ashley Graham wasn't able to attend last year's Met Gala - and it didn't have anything to do whether or not she received an invitation.

@NYMag

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@theashleygraham) on

In her cover interview for New York Magazine, Graham opened up about not being able to attend the Met Gala last year, even though she was "on hold" (in other words, she was likely going to score an invitation), for the biggest fashion event of the year. The reason? She couldn't find a designer willing to dress her in time. Seriously.

"I couldn't get a designer to dress me,” she told the magazine. “You can’t just show up in jeans and a T-shirt.”

While Graham also says that the fact that most designers only make straight sizes was likely a factor, and that there wasn't tons of time for a custom gown to be made, it's kind of not okay that Graham's (healthy!) size would require a custom gown to be made in the first place.

The story has a happy ending though, because Graham was able to attend this year's Met Gala, slaying the haters while looking flawless in a H&M couture gown nonetheless. According to Graham, "Rihanna said I looked ‘hot as fuck,'" so basically, I don't need to explain further, because Rihanna's opinion is the only one that matters when it comes to fashion. Obviously.

This dress tho Thank you @hm!!! ..I still have more pics you haven't seen to post! #metgala #babiesfirstmet

Scientists Are Concerned That the Trump Administration Will Try to Suppress a New Report on Climate Change

A new, yet-to-be-released report created by scientists from 13 different federal agencies says that the average temperatures in the United States have been the warmest of the past 1,500 years - and scientists are already concerned that the Trump administration could attempt to change or suppress the report, the New York Times reports.

According to the report, which was done as part of the National Climate Assessment mandated by congress every four years, temperatures have been rising at rapid rates since the 1980s. Even if humans were stop all greenhouse gas emissions right now, we'd still experience a rise in average temperatures across the globe by 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century. While this seems like a small change, it can have devastating effects across the globe, including longer heat waves, more intense rainstorms and faster loss of coral reefs. The report has also found that it is "extremely likely" that humans can be at least somewhat attributed to these increasing temperatures.

Of course, the Trump administration has been open about the fact that it doesn't believe that humans have contributed to climate change - and the report requires permission from the Trump administration in order to be officially released, the Times, which obtained the unreleased copy of the report, says.

"This is the first case in which an analysis of climate change of this scope has come up in the Trump administration, and scientists will be watching very carefully to see how they handle it," Michael Oppenheimer, a professor of Geosciences at Princeton, told the Times

Meanwhile, considering that President Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement earlier this year, and has made multiple attacks on the EPA, the Trump Administration doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to environmental issues - so we won't be holding our breath.

4 Signs You Are Too Passive in Your Relationship

We constantly hear that sacrifice is the key to having a healthy and successful relationship. Perhaps that means waking up an extra 10 minutes earlier to make your SO a cup of coffee, dedicating one night a week for date night–or coping with their rotten mood after a really rough day at work. Even though being in a healthy relationship does entail many expenses from both sides, but when does it cross the line? All too often it seems as if relationships diminish the passions and opinions of one side (or both) because of the other’s assertive behavior. Here are four signs you are too passive in your relationship.

1.You lose your own opinion

If you are too passive in a relationship it is very likely that your opinion about certain topics is consistently being over shadowed, even so much that you stop voicing your opinion all together. Isabella Santos, sophomore at the University of Miami, experienced this warning sign firsthand in one of her past relationships. As a girl who had always been very assertive about her opinions, she found herself changing outfits for a night out with friends simply because her boyfriend didn’t approve of it. Without hesitation, she switched into an outfit he was finally content with her wearing. Isabella explains how your voice can easily be lost in an unbalanced relationship. “You don’t realize you are being passive in the relationship until you are completely out of it,” she says. “I let him make decisions for me that I have always made myself, but gosh does love truly blind you or what?”

Making decisions together is a great way to strengthen your relationship and build trust, but when it comes down to your partner making decisions about you as an individual, a problem arises. This type of control that your SO may have over your decisions is a red flag that it may be time to break the relationship up. it Speak your own opinion, but be sure to listen to their thoughts as well–it’s all about two-way communication!

2.You always feel inadequate

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Repeat that a couple times per day, then there is a big chance you’re being too passive in your relationship. This sign is loaded with a lot of anxiety and insecurity. You might always be thinking of ways to make your SO happier, despite the cost on your end. You no longer prioritize your personal mental state and happiness, but feel it’s your obligation to do everything you can to make them happy. If your relationship is in a healthy place, you both want the best for each other. It’s not about proving who’s better at the relationship, rather it’s about wanting your partner to be as comfortable and happy as you are.

3.You distance yourself from the important people in your life

It’s extremely important to stay connected to your family and friends even while being whole-heartedly in love. "I eventually gave up trying to merge my friend group with my love life due to the obvious disconnect between my boyfriend and friends,” Isabella explains. “This eventually turned into hanging out with him and his friends for the majority of the time and seeing my friends only occasionally.” This is a very common issue in relationships since it’s usually quite difficult to balance your time between your friends and partner adequately. It is completely understandable, but when you rarely see your friends at all and realize you spend more time with your SO’s social group simply because of their desire to do so, you might have gone too far.

4.Your goals? Gone

Ignoring your previous life goals and aspirations is a sign that you might be letting the relationship take over your life–and not in a good way. It shows you no longer see the point of working hard for personal success because you are just “hanging on for the ride” of their successes. Molly Bolton, a sophomore from the University of Florida, says it’s “extremely important to work toward your own goals in a relationship so that you can grow as an individual rather than a couple.”

Ignoring your own long-term desires will result in a sparse life lacking your own interests. Both individuals should motivate each other to reach their goals, not dwindle them.

Losing yourself in the midst of love is a very easy thing to do. We sometimes become so infatuated with our SO that the only thing that seems right is giving our whole selves to them, despite sacrificing our own needs and desires. The healthiest relationship is when both individuals can enjoy each other’s qualities without overshadowing one another. It is absolutely possible to be a supportive and caring partner while maintaining your own individual needs with good communication and a well-balanced relationship.

This DIY Unicorn Hair Disaster Left A Woman Hospitalized

We've all been victim to at-home hair styling fiascoes like self-trimmed haircuts or kool-aid dyed hair. But one woman's at-home attempt for unicorn-hued tresses turned into a DIY disaster that left her hospitalized for six weeks.

Kirsty Weston, a 29-year-old mom from Hertfordshire, England, attempted to try the unicorn hair trend by dyeing her hair at home. She purchased powder bleach and peroxide to lighten her hair before applying the pastel colored dyes. Shortly after applying the mixture, she knew that her results were going to be less than magical. In an interview with DailyMail, Weston described her painful bleaching experience. "Within 15 minutes, my hair was literally smoking," she said. "The pain was so excruciating that I started to feel dizzy, like I was going to faint."

Despite immediately washing off the chemicals, Weston encountered a swollen face, and had to be rushed to the emergency room the next day where she was treated for an allergic reaction. However, after weeks of continuous pain and symptoms, Weston returned to the hospital where doctors told her that she was suffering from a severe chemical burn. She had to undergo a skin graft on her scalp, along with four other surgeries that resulted in permanent hair loss. Weston was offered two treatment options for replacing the hair, but she has chosen to postpone them.

If you're thinking about coloring your hair, you may want to consider Weston's advice.  "I would tell other people to just go to a professional who knows what they are doing," she said. "I was trying to save some money but bleach is dangerous stuff."

7 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Use the College Gym This Year

After a long, tiring day of class and homework, we bet the last thing on your mind is exercise, and the last place on Earth you want to be at is your college’s gym. It may seem like more of a hassle than a reward to get yourself there, but trust us: it will pay off in the long run. Even if you think you’d rather exercise in the comfort of your own home, there are definitely perks to hitting up the school’s facilities. Can’t make yourself go? Check out these strategies to get yourself to the gym today!

1. Upgrade your workout gear

Your old, beat-up Nikes are collecting dust, along with the two-sizes-too-small sports bra that you wore in high school. Just like buying new clothes makes you excited to dress up for class, revamping your workout style works the same way! Once you find exercise clothes that are comfortable and cute for you, there’s no better time to wear them than during your next gym session—it’s okay to show off a little. Amidst a sea of baggy sweatpants and old tees, your new outfit will be sure to stand out. Target is a great place to start for stylish yet affordable workout gear. If you’re looking to spoil yourself, lululemon is another popular choice.

2. Make the perfect playlist

When you’re tired of running and just about ready to call it quits, that surprisingly catchy Iggy Azalea jam comes on. After two or three songs, you barely notice your aching knees or the sweat dripping in your eyes.

Ask any avid fitness buff, and they’ll attest—music is a must-have when going to the gym! We recommend creating a workout playlist to keep yourself entertained and focused on your workout. You’ll have the chance to listen to your favorite tracks while also getting great exercise. Create your playlist beforehand so that you can exercise without the annoyance of having to switch songs. It can be filled with whatever you’d like (yes, even One Direction), as long as the songs are motivating!

In her HC vlog Connie Chan, a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, recommends creating a playlist for the entire length of your workout. “Create a playlist, and don’t stop working out until that playlist is over,” she says. This will help prevent you from throwing in the towel too soon!

3. Bring a friend

As the semester picks up, it becomes that much harder to meet with friends between classes, extracurriculars, part-time jobs and homework. If you know you’ll want to start exercising this semester but are too anxious to hit the gym alone, why not bring a friend (or two) along? Instead of a quick coffee date with the girls, heading to the gym together is an easy way to stay healthy and catch up at the same time. This is also perfect for collegiettes who are worried about slipping up on their routines and who want someone to hold them accountable, or those collegiettes who are just too nervous to enter the weight room alone (do you even lift, bro?).

Madeline Lacey, a senior at the University of Michigan, says she feels more comfortable with friends at the gym. “Having a friend there helps you ease into the (sometimes) intense gym atmosphere, especially the weight room with all the macho boys,” she says. “It’s definitely more fun!” Your friends are there to make sure you stick with the workout until finished, and you will be there to motivate them, too!

4. Sign up for a fitness class

It can be hard (really hard) to plan and finish a workout on your own, so that’s what group fitness classes are for! With other girls and an enthusiastic teacher by your side, you’ll become more motivated to complete each exercise and keep up with the rest of the class. Most college gyms will offer a variety of options, ranging from karate and kickboxing to yoga and barre classes, so there is something for everyone. Instead of exercising on a whim, having a fitness class in your schedule will encourage you to visit the gym more regularly. You can always invite a friend and turn it into weekly bonding activity!

5. Think of the cuties

The gym weight room is like something out of a fairy tale: all of campus’s cutest athletes gathered in one place (did you see that guy with Ryan Gosling’s face and Taylor Lautner’s abs?!). At first, it can be intimidating to work out with the boys, but what better motivation to hit the college gym than seeing those hot bods with chiseled arms every day?

And you can even get to know them (wink, wink) by going to the gym! We don’t recommend striking up a conversation while he’s mid-lift or mid-squat, but if he’s taking a break, there’s nothing wrong with getting your flirt on (can I have yo numba?). Raquel Sulaiman, a senior at the University of Michigan, says she loves getting attention from guys at UMich’s gym. “My favorite pick up line was, ‘Excuse me, I have a question. How do you get so cute?’ It just threw me completely off guard!”

The gym is the perfect place to meet some of campus’s finest, but beware of Mr. I Think I’m All That And A Bag Of Chips (you can find him flexing and grinning in front of a mirror).

6. Create a schedule

Gina Patrico, a senior at Oakland University, says that creating a workout schedule is an easy way to stay motivated to exercise even when things get hectic with classes and extracurriculars. “I have set days for certain muscle groups, so I can stay organized and fit in workouts around both school and work,” she says.

Try creating your own schedule and sticking to it. It’s as easy as picking two or three days out of the week and dedicating up to an hour of free time to get to the gym. Once you have the time allocated, you can plan ahead for homework, meals and other commitments. It’s super helpful to hang your exercise calendar in your room in order to keep track of progress and future workouts.

7. Reward yourself

If you’re the type of person that’s motivated by rewards—aren’t we all?—there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself after successful visits to the gym. Although a great workout is a reward in and of itself, you should decide what’s extra motivating for you and set a goal before you reward yourself with it. For example: if you work out at the gym 10 times this month, you could reward yourself with a mani/pedi. This is a great way to celebrate your hard work and pamper yourself at the same time! It’s important to make the reward something special so you’ll be that much more excited to hit the gym—and ultimately reach your fitness goal.

Whether its lifting weights, running on the treadmill or hitting up a punching bag, there is something for every type of workout at the college gym. If you’re looking to get your bod back into shape, there’s no better time than now! By taking the effort to get to the gym, you’ll be that much more likely to finish your workout, which is the first step in making progress. With these tips, we hope you’ll feel more motivated to visit the gym.
