Students at This HBCU Turned Their Backs on Betsy DeVos & Booed While She Gave a Commencement Speech

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos gave her first commencement speech Wednesday at Bethune-Cookman University, a historically black university in Florida. The Washington Post reports the students there were, to say the least, not happy with the choice of keynote speaker. Many of them loudly booed DeVos and a number of them even turned their backs as she spoke.

As soon as DeVos began to speak, thanking President Edison Jackson, the Post says the room "erupted with shouts.” This shouting and booing didn’t let up as DeVos continued to speak, which required her to shout the rest of her speech into the microphone. “I am at the table fighting on your behalf,” she said, but it was obvious the students didn’t believe that for a moment, given the past and current actions of the Trump administration. Toward the end of her speech, she said she would be visiting the gravesite of Mary McLeod Bethune, the school’s founder and civil rights activist. This drew some of the strongest protest of her visit, with clear shouts of “No!” ringing through the crowd, the Post reports.

The atmosphere at the commencement ceremony shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, given the heightened tensions on campus from the moment DeVos was announced as the keynote speaker. Thousands signed petitions demanding DeVos be dropped as a speaker. One graduating student, Jasmine Johnson, described her reaction to the Post as pure shock. “For someone to come and speak at my commencement that cannot relate to me or know what I have been through is kind of like a slap in the face,” she said.

In February, DeVos called HBCUs "pioneers of school choice," offending many because she made it sound like black people made the choice to start these schools, rather than being forced to start their own colleges due to racism and segregation.

Jackson, the president of the university, remained steadfast in the university’s choice to bring in DeVos as the keynote speaker. Interacting with people with different viewpoints is, in his opinion, the best way to make sure students are “equipped for the demands of democratic citizenship.”

This all comes at a time that President Donald Trump has made some really confusing statements about HBCUs. On Friday, he said a key funding source for these universities might be unconstitutional. Sunday, he said he has “unwavering support” for historically black colleges.

Confusing statements and appearances seem to be the status quo for Trump, DeVos and the rest of the administration.

This Girl Showed Up to Prom in a Coffin Because She Wants to Be a Funeral Director

Prom has always been a memorable way to end the high school year, with decadent dresses, beautiful pictures, cute promposals and …coffins?!

Megan Flaherty, a 17-year-old student at Pennsauken High School, literally “rose from the dead” to attend her prom, according to Refinery29. While most teenagers rent limos for this special occasion, Flaherty decided to show up in a hearse, complete with a driver wearing a top hat.

Talk about going the extra mile!

After making sure her date Stephen Caldwell was completely okay with the idea, she decided to make plans for her grand entrance. She had her funeral director family friend and her date lower her coffin out of the hearse, where her classmates were able to see her inside before she jumped out—very much alive, of course. Flaherty told NJ.com that she's pretty shy at school, so she thought her fellow students were suprised to see her emerging from a coffin on prom night.

The coffin thing wasn't just a flashy prank—the idea actually connects with Flaherty's personality and goals for the future. She wants to be a funeral director like the family friend who drove her to prom, and plans to start a funeral service program after graduation, NJ.com reports. If only we could all be ourselves so completely at prom!

Trump Signed an Executive Order to Investigate Nonexistent Voter Fraud, Probably Because He Lost the Popular Vote

$

In an attempt to pretend things are totally fine (hint: they're not), Trump has revived an old distraction—an investigation into voter fraud in the 2016 election, The Los Angeles Times reports. Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that will create a commission to investigate allegations of voter fraud and suppression. The only problem? There's no evidence that there was any meaningful voter fraud in the presidential election. And even if there was—what exactly is Trump hoping to achieve with this? He won.

The text of the executive order has not yet been published by the White House, but The Washington Post reports that its signing was corroborated by at least three anonymous White House officials. Trump was previously set to sign this order January 26, according to CNN, but was delayed repeatedly for unknown reasons.

The panel will be headed by Vice President Mike Pence and Kris Kobach, a controversial politician behind Arizona’s strict immigration laws, which many say have caused racial profiling of Latinos. The White House claims that the commission, if convened, will be a "bipartisan effort." According to the Independent, the reason voter suppression was included was to appeal to Democrats, in an attempt to entice them to join the commission.

This is far from the first time Trump has brought up voter fraud in the 2016 election. He previously tweeted that he would have won the “popular vote” if millions illegal votes were made void (there were not millions of illegal votes). In fact, prior to the election, he maintained he might lose due to such fraud, but even then, the issue was debunked by multiple experts—even the ones he cited. After the election, his own lawyers maintained there was no evidence of fraud in the states where Trump won.

Many experts do not consider voter fraud a problem in the U.S.—most alleged cases of voter fraud are due to an antiquated system of voter registration, and their influence is miniscule. However, voter suppression is a legitimate worry, as Republicans have been accused of imposing needless barriers, such as voter ID laws, to deter blacks and other minorities from voting. These laws became more common after the Supreme Court dismantled the mandate requiring all suspicious voter laws to undergo review.

But President Trump, seriously, get over the election! Dude, you won!

10 Things Only Double Majors Will Understand

$

We will never forget the day we sit in the advising office and made the decision to declare not only one, but two majors (what were we thinking?!). Since then, your life has been a blur of homework and tests. If you have a double major, you'll relate to the following:

1. Planning is beyond necessary

2. Classes that overlap for requirements in both your majors are a godsend

3. Sometimes you forget one major when people ask

4. You’re more than used to people asking you why you’re doing it

5. Commitment is not exactly your thing

6. When it comes to that ages-old STEM vs. humanities debate, you might not have to pick a side

Or, you’re doubled up on one side of the argument

7. Asking you your favorite major is like asking a mom to pick which of her kids she loves more

But deep down, you know we all play favorites!

8.You basically live in your college’s advising office

9. Nothing is more exciting than a program that deals with both of your majors

10. Your major GPA has way more classes affecting it

This can be either a good or bad thing, though.

Here's What Paris Hilton Has to Say About '00s Fashion & Kendall Jenner

$

Ah, Paris Hilton—the poster woman of the '00s. She pretty much single-handedly pioneered every trend we know and love today. Before tracksuits were considered couture, before having a personal brand was normal, heck, before the selfie was a worldwide phenomenon, Paris was doing it. It wouldn't be wrong to even say she crafted the millennial persona with her penchant for partying and defying traditional norms.

Taking a break from her busy schedule (did you know she DJs in Ibiza every year?), Paris sat down with W Magazine to discuss some of her favorite trends from way back when. Of course, there's the Millenial Pink that she used to wear like, every day. Also, graphic tees. "T-shirts are the best to tell the world your most profound thoughts," Paris told them jokingly, then added, "No crop top is too cropped." I have to disagree with you there, Paris. Have you SEEN that monstrosity from Urban Outfitters?

When asked what she thought about other A-listers copying her style, she said, "To now see things on the runway and to see girls wearing things that I used to wear is really cool because nobody really dressed like me back in the day. Young people now see what people wore before and want to bring it back." She even said that she felt "complimented" when Kendall Jenner drew inspiration from Paris's 21st birthday ensemble while celebrating her own birthday last November.

Well, it looks like Paris's overarching influence isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Time to break out the Juicy Tube I still have from middle school.

Internet Trolls Told Miss Black UT That She Wasn't 'Black Enough' to Win the Title

When University of Texas senior Rachael Malonson was crowned Miss Black UT, she didn't realize her victory would spark an internet controversy over her racial qualifications. Once the fraternity who hosted the pageant (Kappa Alpha Psi) posted a picture of Rachael on Twitter, people stormed in with a flood of negative comments about her, mostly debating whether she was "black enough" to deserve the crown.

The criteria for the pageant? To be a woman with “some African-American heritage." Rachael is biracial, but apparently, that's not enough for some people. Hundreds of comments like this can be found in response to KAP's original post.

Unfortunately, Rachael is used to this kind of attention. She told Cosmopolitan, "Growing up, I've constantly [been] questioned as to if I was black enough or even black—I have fairly straight hair and an olive skin tone that people don't usually think fits the 'look' of a black or biracial woman." People have even laughed at her, or asked to see pictures of her parents after she tells them she's biracial. But she's not letting the negativity keep her down. Along with support from the other contestants in the pageant, Rachael says she's received messages of encouragement from her community. “One father personally reached out to me to tell me that his little daughter is biracial and struggles with her identity and that I was an inspiration for his daughter and his family," she said. Her response to those who continue to tear her down? "I hope their eyes can be opened to know that we come in all different shades and don't have to look a certain way to be black … I am humbly honored to have already been able to impact people all around the world by standing up for who I am as a biracial black woman.” You go, Rachael.

Drop Everything: You Can Actually Use a Bobby Pin to Get the Perfect Cat Eye

Every beauty junkie knows the all-too-real struggle of creating the perfect eyeliner wing. Even I, as a veteran in the cat eye department, agree that getting a perfect, even wing every time is quite near miraculous. This beauty vlogger, however, seemingly found the key. Meet BeautynMalia and her bobby pin.

A post shared by Malia (@beautynmalia) on

So, it looks like she just paints the two tips of the bobby pin with a liquid eyeliner pen (or pot), then places it short side up onto the curvature of her upper lash line, leaving her with a stencil! Afterward, she just fills in the gaps and extends the flick outward a bit. In all honesty, I normally don't pay much attention to all these "beauty-hacks," but it looks like this one actually works! And, since every girl probably has a million bobby pins lying around anyway, anyone could give this technique a go. Just remember to be extra careful when using any kind of sharpish object around your eyes. Save the bleeding eyeliner for Halloween, collegiettes.

What would we do without beauty bloggers?

5 Reasons It’s Okay to Take the Summer Off

$
0
0

These days, taking time off for yourself seems to be something that is frowned upon. Combined with the need to make money and keep busy, it can be especially difficult to bring yourself to take a break once in awhile. However, time off is incredibly underrated. Taking the summer off before starting your next adventure in life may be just the right idea.

1. It gives you a chance to try something new

Just think about it. For the past few years, your life has probably been extremely busy––you’ve had constant schoolwork, extracurricular activities to commit time to and probably a part-time job here and there. Combined with spending time with friends and family, it probably left you little time for yourself.

Cassidy Hopkins, a senior at Emerson College, took advantage of her free summer between high school and college. “It’s a great time to spend with family and friends and try something you’ve never had the chance to,” she says, “Take that road trip you’ve wanted to go on with your besties, plan a weekend getaway with your parents, pick up yoga or learn and instrument.” Now’s a better time than any other!

Taking a summer off from a job or internship could leave you with the free time you haven’t had lately––and allow you to do some of the things you’ve never had the time or energy for. Always wanted to learn more about photography? Sign up for a class! Haven’t learned how to drive yet? Now’s your chance! Want to spend more time cooking up those Pinterest recipes? Now’s the time! If you free your schedule from the usual part-time job, school or internship, you’ll finally have a chance to check those fun things off your to-do list before you head off to college.

2. You may save money

Depending on your usual plans, taking a summer off could actually save you money. Many pre-collegiettes and collegiettes commit to unpaid internships or move to cities with high living expenses. While internships are great learning experiences and it might be tempting to up and move to your dream city, think about what you could save by holding off for another year or two.

Alex Watson was one of these collegiettes. “I originally wanted to spend a summer interning in New York City, but it turned out that the cons outweighed the pros,” says Alex, a senior at New York University. “It would have been so expensive to live in NYC and basically pay to intern, so I decided to take a summer off at home instead. It was the best choice I could have made because it allowed me to save money and spend time at home instead.” Ambition is great, but the summer after high school might not be the best opportunity to put those ambitions into action.

Though it doesn’t seem real that you could save money by taking time off, it is true. Consider other factors like where you’re living and what kinds of activities you’re doing on a daily basis; they could help you save big. Holding off from some bigger, more expensive plans can actually have more benefits than you think!

3. It allows you time to recharge

When you are constantly busy managing school, work and your personal life, you probably don’t have much time to step back and relax. It can be easy to get caught up in the chaos of your busy life, and taking a summer off could give you the time to take a breather.

Cassidy also recommends using the summer between high school and college as a time to relax and recharge. “You worked hard all throughout high school, and when you get to college it will be just as rigorous, if not more. The summer is a great time to stop and take a step back from it all,” she says. After all, isn’t that what summer is for?

If you’re about to head off in another direction this fall, think about taking this last summer to relax and reassess. Remember that you have a long road ahead of you, and this might be the perfect opportunity to recharge before you get started again.

4. You’ll be working for the rest of your life

It sounds scary, but it’s probably true! You’ll most likely be spending the rest of your life either at work or at school. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, note that there might not be much free time in your future. When you get tied down to a job (or even a school), it can be harder and harder to tear yourself away for even just a few days.

Take advantage of the opportunity now and take the summer off while you have the chance! Odds are, you probably won’t have the same opportunity to take time off in the future––especially three months of it. While you might be hesitant to take the time off right now, remember that you might regret it later on if you don’t!

5. You can prioritize your own well-being

Chances are you haven’t had any “me time,” in a while––and we could all use some here and there. Take some time off this summer to take care of yourself and refresh to prepare for your next adventure: college!

A summer off will enable you to focus on things other than school and work, like friends, family and your personal health. Instead of stressing yourself out at work, you can relax with family, spend some much-needed time with your BFFs and set aside time for yourself. You’ll have the opportunity to work on your health, get organized and overall refresh before you head into the fall!

While it can be hard to let go of your responsibilities and take the summer off, there are certainly benefits to doing so! Freeing up your summer will allow you to relax, recharge and spend your time checking things off your summer bucket list that have been on there for a while!

Trump Had a Twitter Meltdown About James Comey & the Media This Morning

$

President Donald Trump had a few words for former FBI Director James Comey this morning—and for the press, too. Trump's firing of Comey has left the country confused on what's really going on in the White House. So, he took to Twitter to clear some things up.

That's right, he "better hope" that our president is not suggesting that there are secret tapes of their conversations with that will be released if he leaks any information. As if Comey has not been through enough, he now has to deal with what seems to be blackmail from the President of the United States. Some have compared Comey's firing to the Saturday Night Massacre under Richard Nixon, and this tweet about "tapes"didn't help matters.

The New York Times reports that the president "appeared agitated" about news reports that suggested he fired Comey for trying to investigate ties between Trump's campaign and Russia. By the looks of his tweets, he also seems to be concerned about the media's perception of the actual firing. Since there has been controversy on why he actually fired Comey, people have been coming up with their own theories. Did he fire Comey for disloyalty? Or, was it because of how he handled Hillary's emails? Was it because of the Russia investigation?

Instead of telling us why, Trump actually said that we can't trust his staff to provide journalists with completely accurate information.

Then, he suggested that all press briefings should be canceled for this reason, with "press briefings" in quotes, and suggested that the briefings be replaced with written statements.

For someone who is praised for supposedly not caring what the public thinks, Trump seems to have a heated response for everything his "haters" claim. Like a season finale of The Apprentice, the drama is heating to a boil, and the country is left to wonder: Who will be fired next?

Miley dropped "Malibu" on Thursday, and to celebrate, she and her old friends at Radio Disney watched her Hannah Montana audition tape from 2005. The throwback video shows a 12-year-old Miley dressed in a T-shirt that reads, "I should have my own TV show." The spunky preteen is heard confidently repeating, "It's going to happen."

J.K. Rowling Is Begging Fans Not to Buy This Stolen 'Harry Potter' Prequel

Let this be a lesson that you don't want to mess with J.K. Rowling. The author is outspoken and doesn’t take any bullshit, especially when it comes to people stealing her work. She's begging fans not to purchase her stolen Harry Potter prequel, which was auctioned to support charities English Pen and Dyslexia Action.

According to HuffPost, the manuscript—an 800-word story that takes place in the same universe as Harry Potter and begins three years before the titular character's birth—was stolen in April. On Friday, Rowling tweeted a plea to her fans not to buy it.

According to Refinery29, local police are supporting Rowling's honorable efforts to return the manuscript to its rightful owner. They've been asking fans to help in their search. “The only people who will buy this unique piece are true Harry Potter fans,” said the Investigating Officer PC Paul Jauncey.

The manuscript was originally purchased by a fan, who asked to be identified only by his first name, “Hira.” Hira told the BBC he hopes the one-of-a-kind work, which was handwritten on a postcard, is returned because the story is of value to him. "I don't think whoever took it or stole it or who might purchase it will really understand the benefits to people out there, what it can do," he said. "If I can get it back, I'm over the moon, because I'm only going to be doing good stuff with it. If it's destroyed, or if it's lost, it's a great loss."

We have the highest hopes for our queen Rachel Lindsay as she stars in the upcoming season of The Bachelorette. The 31-year-old attorney is the ~first~ black Bachelorette, and after suffering through Nick’s season, this girl definitely deserves to find some love.

Saturday Night Live tried their hand at predicting exactly how Rachel’s season will go down in an unaired sketch from the May 13 episode. Clearly the SNL writers think it’s going to be a disaster…but tbh, we could totally see some of this stuff happening too.

In the sketch, Rachel, played by Sasheer Zamata, meets her v interesting group of suitors played by Chris Pine, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Pete Davidson and Kenan Thompson. From announcing they’ve dated black women before to mansplaining the plot of Get Out, meeting Rachel’s “25 hot dummies” was so hard to watch. The contestants could literally not stop talking about race, while the narrator reassured us, “It’s our most progressive season yet.”

Here’s the sketch if you want to hop on this trainwreck yourself.

Hopefully this will teach the guys what not to do during the show. Rachel herself even said on The Women Tell All that she doesn’t want her race to be the focus of the show.

You can catch more of the real Rachel Lindsay when her season premieres on May 22. Let’s just pray it’s nothing like this SNL skit.

Jeff Sessions Just Rolled Back Obama's Policies on Sentencing for Drug Crimes

According to The Washington Post, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has reversed several policy changes made by former Attorney General Eric Holder, paving the way for drug sentences to get significantly longer again—and essentially bringing back the War on Drugs.

Sessions sent a two-page memo to the 94 U.S. attorneys offices across the country last week. According toUSA Today, this directive replaced the 2013 memo published by Holder, which aimed to who had tried to reduce the prison population by allowing nonviolent offenders to serve shorter sentences.

“We are returning to the enforcement of the laws as passed by Congress, plain and simple,” Sessions said in a speech, as reported by The Washington Post. “If you are a drug trafficker, we will not look the other way, we will not be willfully blind to your misconduct.”

Some argue that the new policy is unjust and unfair to people who commit less serious crimes.

“Jess Sessions is pushing federal prosecutors to reverse progress and repeat a failed experiment—the War on Drugs—that has devastated the lives and rights of millions of Americans, ripping apart families and communities are setting millions, particularly Black people and other people of color, on a vicious cycle of incarceration,” Udi Ofer, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Campaign for Smart Justice, said in a statement.

It is unclear yet how the new policy recommendations will be enacted in practice. The memo directs prosecutors to follow the federal guidelines for sentencing procedures, unless there’s a reason to do otherwise—in which case, exceptions can occur, the Post reported.

“There will be circumstances in which good judgement would lead a prosecutor to conclude that a strict application of the above charging policy is not warranted,” the memo reads. “In that case, prosecutors should carefully consider whether an exception may be justified.”

This weekend, child prodigies—and brothers!—Cannan and Carson Huey-You are taking some big steps in their educational careers. Cannan, an 11-year-old, will be graduating high school, and Carson, 14, will be graduating Texas Christian University, The Washington Post reported.

Carson, who enrolled in 2013 at Texas Christian University (TCU), will be the youngest student ever to graduate there, Dallas News reported. The 14-year-old is graduating with a degree in physics and a double minor in math and Chinese.

“It didn’t come easily. It really didn’t,” Carson told KXAS-TV (NBC5). “I knew I wanted to do physics when I was in high school, but then quantum physics was the one that stood out to me, because it was abstract. You can’t really see what’s going on, so you have to sort of rely on the mathematics to work everything out.”

The little genius will begin graduate school at TCU in the fall for his PhD, according to Dallas News.

His little brother Cannan will shortly be following in his footsteps. The 11-year-old is set to attend TCU this fall to study astrophysics and engineering, the Post reported.

While their academic record is sure to impress, there’s a lot more to them than just their minds, their mom Claretta Kimp told the Post. At home, they play with their puppy Klaus, wrestle and battle the Dark Side in epic lightsaber battles.

“My boys have more social skills than most adults,” Kimp told the Post. “They are just normal little boys who do normal little boy things.”

Camera Footage of the Penn State Fraternity Where a Pledge Died Will Be Used as Key Evidence

According to CNN, eight members of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Penn State were charged last Friday for involuntary manslaughter, due to the death of a pledge on February 4th. The fraternity house had a surveillance camera that will be used as essential evidence in the trial.

Though the cause of death was a brain injury from several falls in addition to a blood alcohol content between .26 and .36 percent through the night, the victim, Timothy J. Piazza, eventually died due to the recklessness of the fraternity brothers, who did not call the police until 12 hours after Piazza’s first fall left him unconscious.

The camera footage shows Piazza’s unconscious body being carried up the stairs by some of the brothers at 10:47 p.m. Instead of calling the authorities, the brothers threw liquid on his face in attempts to wake him, but Piazza was unresponsive. An hour later, Piazza was moving and pleading for help, and while one brother suggested they call the authorities, they ultimately decided to leave it be. Throughout the night, the boys made attempts to wake Piazza again once he fell unconscious, including jumping on him, throwing him onto the couch, hitting him in the stomach and slapping him in the face.

At about 3 a.m, Piazza is seen on the footage lying on the floor in pain and trying to stand up, but falls head first down the stairs. Two hours later, more boys come to check on him, but leave him on the floor where he landed. Finally at 10 a.m, nearly twelve hours later, frat members found Piazza’s cold body with blood covering his face and decided it was finally time to call the authorities. By the time they called, it was too late for Piazza.

To make matters worse, the Beta Theta Pi brothers tried to cover up the fact that they hadn’t immediately gotten Piazza help. According to ABC News, in their text messages, one boy wrote “If need be, just tell them what I told you guys, found him behind [a bar] the next morning at around 10 a.m., and he was freezing-cold, but we decided to call 911 instantly, because the kid's health was paramount.”

Luckily, the fraternity's security camera caught the truth and hopefully justice will soon be served for Piazza.
