Ahh, summertime—it’s our favorite time of year, and for good reason. Whether you plan on hanging out poolside or interning this summer (or both), we have a few simple tips that will shake up your summer uniform. We partnered with Topshop and some of our fave style influencers to show you how to easily up your summer ante.

1. Invest in a few key trends

Courtesy of To Be Bright

Lace-up sandals are hot this season, and they provide instant style to any of your summer outfits. We’re partial to these multicolored Topshop beauties. Paired with a simple neutral-toned outfit, these standout shoes majorly up the chic factor.

2. Wear your bathing suit as a top

Courtesy of Mimosas and Manhattan

There’s nothing we love more than a fashion piece with versatility—and so we’re big fans of how this style influencer made her crisp Topshop white one-piece work double duty as a day-time top. Choose a basic, solid-colored one-piece and pair with a skirt or jeans. Chic, effortless, easy.

3. Make your sunnies a focal point

Courtesy of Redux Squad

If you don’t have a pair of fabulous sunglasses to rock this summer, now’s the time to stock up. We love these show-stopping Topshop metal cat-eye frames that are super luxe but very affordable. This one accessory looks just as good with a minimalist outfit as it does with something a little more statement.

4. Rock a straw hat

Courtesy of Audrey Madison Stowe

Straw hats are one of our favorite summer accessories—they’ll keep you cool on sweltering days and keep you looking chic no matter where you go. This casual, beachy Topshop sun hat looks great teamed with just about any summer outfit.

5. Don some very unique jewelry

Courtesy of Merged Fashion

We believe jewelry in all forms is always a good idea—but this summer, consider something more unique. Topshop has truly embraced the ‘90s trend with layered toe rings to add major style to casual sandals. The best part? They’re totally adjustable in size. Mix and match the stack or wear them separately to bring some nostalgic cool to your look.

6. Skin is in

Courtesy of Mae Amor

This summer, don’t be afraid to show a little skin. Off-the-shoulder tops are having a moment, and this sexy-but-subtle Topshop version is one of our favorites. It’s a great alternative for those who shudder at the idea of mini skirts or short-shorts.

Which summer look is your favorite? Shop your summer wardrobe essentials and brand new trends at Topshop.

Dozens of Baby Tigers Found Dead in Bangkok's Tiger Temple

As if there wasn’t enough sad news about zoo animals this week,  Bangkok’s famous Tiger Temple was found to be holding forty dead tiger cubs in a freezer on Wednesday.

CBS News reported that the authorities discovered the cubs while they were removing live, adult tigers from the Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua temple. The monks had been assailed with accusations for years that they were involved in over-breeding and illegal trafficking of the animals.

Tiger Temple was a Thailand tourist attraction, whose website offered guests "Breakfast with Monks and Tigers." Visitors could also feed or help exercise the large felines.

In 1999, the Buddhist temple was given one abandoned tiger and from there, acquired a lot more. They became a full-fledged zoo for the oversized felines, counting nearly 167 on their premises by April 2015. However, since 2001 the temple has faced a lot of animal welfare and legal issues, CBS reports.

The remaining 137 tigers are being taken to different shelters until they can be placed elsewhere. Meanwhile, the monks maintain that they didn't do anything wrong, claiming they kept the cubs that died near birth in the freezer as proof that they were not trafficking the animals. Either way, we're glad the tigers are moving to more suitable homes—and also crying for the baby cubs.

A New Survey Shows Some Women Have Orgasms During Childbirth

While birthing a child is sometimes one of the most simultaneously painful and amazing experiences, moms everywhere are boasting about having the best orgasms during childbirth. That’s right, orgasms.

In a new survey conducted by Mum and Positive Birth Movement, a YouTube channel dedicated to mothers and mothers-to-be, it was discovered that six percent of women experienced orgasm while delivering their newborns.

But, why wasn’t anyone talking about this before? Well, besides women keeping masturbation a secret for years, orgasms during birth just don't happen that often.

Broadly asked moms about their experience with orgasmic birth and one mom said she wouldn’t say she had an orgasmic birth, but birth was definitely an ultimate experience.

“I felt so in tune with my body. Physically it felt painful, but manageable,” she told the website.

Another mom from Australia defnitely felt more orgasmic sensations during her birth. "Every fiber of her being 'was engaged and pulsing. It was the most incredible rush, more sensual than sexual,'" she told Broadly.

Orgasmic Birth, a website dedicated to these kinds of child labor, highlights that orgasmic births aren’t necessarily supposed to be as sexual as they seem. The website states, “Whenever a woman can look back on these moments with joy, when the physical and emotional aspects of birth are fully experienced as pleasurable, we call this orgasmic birth.”

Put that scary health class childbirth video to the back of your mind and read up because delivering your baby may be painful, but you’ll get rewarded.

Victim in UCLA Shooting was Gunman's Professor

On Wednesday, UCLA turned into the scene of a shooting, killing one victim followed by the gunman taking his own life. As it turns out, the gunman’s victim was once his professor, USA Today reports.

The victim was William S. Klug, a mechanical and aerospace engineering professor. The shooter was a grad student named Mainak Sarkar. For months Sarkar had taken to social media to express his distrust for Klug. Sarkar shot his professor in UCLA’s engineering building, but no solid motive has not been confirmed.

Classes were cancelled for the rest of the day Wednesday, but have now resumed. And if that wasn’t difficult enough, this all comes the week before finals for UCLA students. But they can rest assured because the campus is now teeming with security in the form of policemen and federal agents.

Finals week is stressful enough, so we wouldn’t even want to imagine a tragedy like this right before it. Our hearts go out to you, UCLA. Keep your heads up during this difficult time.

UCLA Shooter Had a 'Hit List' That Included Two Professors and a Woman

New details emerge from the UCLA murder-suicide that happened Wednesday morning that shows that the attack was fully planned. USA Today reports that Los Angeles police have found a “kill list” in the home of the shooter in Minnesota that had three names on it: two professors from UCLA and a woman, who was allegedly once Sarkar's wife.

The Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said that the gunman, 38-year-old graduate student, Mainak Sarkar, drove to Los Angeles from Minnesota with two guns, killed Professor William Klug and then killed himself.

Beck also said that the woman on the kill list was found shot dead in her home in Minnesota. NBC News reports that relatives identified the woman as Sarkar's estranged wife, 31-year-old Ashley Hasti. Hasti's uncle, Mark Fitzgibbons, told NBC that the couple had been separated for years. The other professor who was targeted is unharmed.

KABC-TV reports that although the motive is unclear, police are focusing on the gunman’s grades and his relationship with his professor.

Oh, Starbucks, you have done it again.

According to Cosmopolitan, Starbucks has launched a new, very Insta-worthy drink. The drink, titled the “Pink Drink," is basically just a revamped version of the Strawberry Açai Refresher. But instead of water, they use coconut milk, and they add fresh fruit. Yes, please!

In regards to the taste, Cosmo also notes that some are comparing it to strawberry milk. But we can probably agree that the taste really doesn’t matter because of how pretty it is! According to Foodbeast, the aesthetics of the drink is the primary reason why people are freaking out about it so much.

Check it out for yourself and seriously try not to have Starbucks envy.

What to Do if You Hate Your Girlfriend's Friends

$
0
0

Imagine this: You just found the girl of your dreams! She's funny, intelligent, gorgeous—not to mention super good in bed. She’s pretty much the whole package. There's just one teeny, tiny problem—you can't stand her friends. They hog your girlfriend's attention, they're mean to you, they constantly try to break you guys up and start drama, or maybe you don't even know why you hate them; you just do.

Hating your girlfriend's friends can be a tricky situation, and the solution is not always clear-cut. Fixing the problem starts with evaluating exactly why you don't like them. The solution is totally dependent on why the problem exists in the first place.

Check out a couple of common reasons why you might be butting heads with your girl’s friends and what you can do about it.

Her friends monopolize all of her time

It sucks finding yourself alone all the time, especially when you're in a relationship. Sometimes you feel like you'd be better off single when your girlfriend would rather hang out with her friends than with you.

The first step to solving this problem is to take a chill pill and try to look at the situation from an outside point of view. Are they really hogging her attention, or are you the one being clingy? Sometimes it may seem like your girl is ditching you for her friends, but it could be that she just wants to hang out with her pals every once in a while and you're the one trying to be around her 24/7.

If, after you've evaluated the situation, you can confirm that she is in fact spending more time with her friends than she is with you, try asking to join them! Your girlfriend might have no idea she's been ignoring you. If hanging with her and her buddies still isn't enough for you, try talking to her about it and requesting more alone time. Open communication is always a good idea!

They reject you

Brooke Geraci, a freshman at the University of Central Florida, says she’s frustrated with her girlfriend's friends.

"I really don't like it how all of the sudden my GF's friends don't really want to chill with me anymore and they just want to hang out with her," she says. "When me and my GF were just friends, we could all chill together. Now, they don't even consider me their friend. I'm just known as my GF's GF. But before we were dating, I was referred to as Brooke."

While this situation can be really upsetting and uncomfortable, it's not uncommon. Mutual friends may pick sides when two people from their friend group start dating each other, especially when the couple gets into arguments. This may lead to some animosity that can cause you to not like former friends anymore if you're the one they're rejecting.

In this situation, speaking directly to your former friends (if you were ever friends with them in the first place) might be the best solution. Ask them why they're rejecting you or if you have done anything to get on their bad sides. Talking to them without getting your girlfriend involved avoids putting unnecessary stress on her and shows initiative on your part to make the friendship work out.

They’re bad influences on your girlfriend

Friends don't encourage friends to make bad decisions. If you think your girlfriend's buddies are leading her down the wrong road, that may lead to some hard feelings between you and her friends. Maybe they like to drink or party or do reckless things you don't want your girlfriend to get involved with, or perhaps they put her in dangerous situations. Whatever it is they do that leads you to believe they're bad influences, it's important to make your concerns clear.

Try sitting down with your girlfriend over dinner and explaining what bad effects you think her friends have had on her. Make sure you do so in a calm and judgment-free manner. For example, "I am uncomfortable with the amount so-and-so drinks," sounds better than, "Your friend is an alcoholic."

It's best to talk one-on-one with your girlfriend about topics like this, because if her friends are around, they may get defensive and it can turn into an even bigger issue than it already was. Once you've clarified to your girlfriend what makes you uncomfortable, she can relay the information to her friends and make her own decision on what steps to take – and you can judge how much of a problem it has to be.

You just plain don't know why you don't like them

They're nice and they're good to your girlfriend, but for whatever reason, you just can't stand them! You might need to look in unexpected places for the source of tension. Dating expert Dr. Dennis W. Neder finds that lesbians in particular are prone to rejecting non-lesbian friends of their lovers.

“That's not to say that lesbians shun non-lesbians, but they are very protective of the community itself,” he explains. “The (often unspoken) fear is that it introduces the possibility of even more competition in a relatively small market.”

So, if you have a problem with your lover's friends that you just can't put your finger on, that might just be it. Try talking to her friends and getting to know them better to see if you may be compatible after all. Maybe invite them to go get coffee with you and clear the air.

Regardless of what situation has caused you to have harsh feelings towards your girlfriend's friends, the best thing to do is to talk things out. Have a chat with your girl and let her know what it is about her friends that upsets you to see if she can clear things up, or meet up with her friends and talk it out with them. Odds are you'll find that they aren't such bad people after all. There may just be some sort of misunderstanding getting in the way of you being friends with them as well.

You should trust your girlfriend's judgment! If she chose those people as her friends, they're probably pretty decent folks. And if they aren't, she'll wise up and dump them sooner or later. Just stick it out, because you're dating her, not her friends. No one said you had to like them, but you should at least try to tolerate them.

We're Talking About Amber Heard & Johnny Depp's Divorce All Wrong

By Tisa Tollenaar

After spending the past week and a half following the developments on the Amber Heard and Johnny Depp case, I have a confession to make: I’m sick of pop culture media.

That’s a hell of a thing to say if you’re a journalism student.

Maybe it's because I'm constantly harped at to "remain objective" at all times, yet I can't help but notice the blatant bias pop culture writers have when reporting on this issue.

If you go to Google’s news section and search “Amber Heard,” you’ll find headlines that include words such as “liar,” “blackmail” and many references to Heard’s sexuality. However, if you were to perform the same search with “Johnny Depp,” the headlines are much less harsh. An article posted by US Weekly details how Johnny Depp was “met with cheers” after coming on stage at a music concert he performed in Stockholm only days after Heard came forward with abuse allegations. This stark difference could be because the press may be hounding her a lot more than they are him, but there are still many other things that leave a stomach uneasy.

While articles of Depp’s ex-girlfriend, their daughter and his friends defending him against the allegations are easy to find via a simple Google search, an article published by Daily Mail in which Amber Heard’s ex-boyfriend comes to her defense is much harder to come by. (No, really, who knew about it before reading this post?) Reportedly, the divorce filing came just three days after Depp’s mother passed away and some outlets are all about using this against Heard.

Many articles claim that Amber Heard is after her husband’s money. People released an article detailing Heard’s income versus her expenses and found that she spends more than she earns—and somehow, it seems people are more interested in this than they are the physical injuries Heard has suffered. Comments on that article are scathing and offensive, and demonstrate just how little people care about the alleged violence. "Go pay for your own candy you gold-digging wh*re!!" one person posted. "Wow, that was one expensive piece of ass. And that's all she is ....... a piece of ass," another person said. "The lesbian was in it for the money from day one," someone purported. "Anyone who believes Amber Heard the Gold Digger deserves to go to jail," another declared. The list goes on, as people drop names like "hussy,""slut,""tramp" and just about every other insult you can imagine.

Somehow, her sexuality has become core to the conversation—despite the fact that it's really not relevant to the situation. Heard has been open about her bisexuality since before her relationship with Depp. Now, many outlets are somehow using that fact to depict Heard in a negative light amidst the filings. Some publications have referred to Heard as “Johnny Depp’s Bisexual Wife” in lieu of her name. Many are alleging that Heard’s bisexuality was an issue in her marriage to Depp. Some even go as far to as to say that Heard had an affair with another woman.

First off, I apologize for the link overload but it’s hard not to do when there are so many he-said-she-said points of view that are being published every second. Secondly, the bigger issue is being ignored here—Amber Heard was physically abused and sustained injury from it. She is a victim, and the mass media is failing to recognize her as such. Rather, they are using their resources to paint the picture of a not-so-famous “gold digger” who is trying to extort her much more famous husband for money.

What kind of message does this send to domestic abuse victims? That you’re going to be scrutinized and ripped to shreds in the presses if you so much as speak out and defend yourself? It sends a particularly hopeless message to those with attackers who are influential and powerful. The reports of Heard’s finances show she isn’t going to have the same standard of living after the divorce and that she isn’t very likely to be able to support herself afterwards. Sadly, there are many women—famous or not—who might find themselves in a similar situation. While it isn’t the first of its kind and certainly won’t be the last, the coverage of the Heard/Depp case is sure to show how the system handles domestic abuse cases.

So far, it’s looking like money talks. And so does reputation.

In my ideal world, as a future journalist, the media would be using this topic to bring more light to the issue of domestic abuse. It’s clearly still a prevalent problem in our society—and it's not being taken seriously or viewed as legitimate. However, it seems as though people only care about this story to shame Amber Heard and almost ignore the actual abuse entirely. It’s not fair, it’s incredibly biased, and not very professional for journalists.

This opinion piece isn’t very objective, either, but I digress. The only thing to do to hone in on what really matters in this developing story is to watch from a distance and take in just the facts. It’s so hard to read all of the articles when you can’t stand them.

Amy Schumer Posts Nude Selfie to Promote Gun Violence Awareness

Many celebrities took to social media yesterday to promote National Gun Violence Awareness Day, but Amy Schumer is by far getting the most attention for her interesting method of advocacy. On Instagram, the comedian posted a picture of herself in nothing but an orange sports bra, encouraging her followers to join her in wearing orange in support of the important event.

Today please #wearorange for gun safety! #everytown

A photo posted by @amyschumer on

"Today please #wearorange for gun safety! #everytown," Schumer captioned the photo. In addition to this almost nude photo, she posted other pictures of herself and her friends wearing orange throughout the day. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, the organization behind #WearOrange, orange has become "the symbol of gun safety" in the United States.

Schumer has worked with Everytown before to advocate for gun control. On her show Inside Amy Schumer, she gave us a hilarious sketch about gun safety before interviewing the chief strategy officer of Everytown about the importance of gun violence awareness.

Kudos to Schumer for bringing attention to gun violence in this most interesting way.

'The Hills' Might Be Turned Into a Movie, But It's Up to Lauren Conrad

It's been 10 years since MTV's The Hills aired for the first time, but it looks like our favorite reality TV stars will be making a comeback on the big screen. A source tells Entertainment Weekly that stars Kristin Cavallari, Whitney Port and Audrina Patridge are all interested in doing a reunion movie.

A proposed plot would follow the cast to Australia for Patridge’s wedding to fiancé Corey Bohan. The film would document the stars as they come to terms with how their lives have changed in the 6 years since the show ended.

Notably left out of the rumored cast are Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag, and, of course, Lauren Conrad. Arguably the biggest stars of the series, it's hard to imagine a Hills film would happen without their participation. We have a feeling, if asked, Speidi would jump at the chance to be on screen again. As far as Conrad is concerned, sources claim LC has been the only holdout, and the project hinges on her willingness to be involved.

Though Conrad’s rep declined to comment on the potential film, Lauren herself has confirmed she will appear on MTV's The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now retrospective on August 2.

Ben Higgins Plans to Do Something No Other Bachelor Has Ever Done

Who would have ever thought that we might have a former Bachelor in office? But that’s exactly what might be happening!

Ben Higgins reportedly wants to run for a seat in the Colorado House of Representatives. The Bachelor alum starred on season 20 of the beloved reality TV show, where he eventually found love with his now-fiancée Lauren Bushnell.

Higgins confirmed to The Colorado Independent that he is “seriously considering a run.” The newspaper reports that Higgins, who works as a business analyst, has already been consulting with prominent Colorado politicians about the prospect. If he were to run, Higgins would belong to House District 4 and would be a Republican.

Higgins’ website gives no hints about his potential run. An official statement on the website reads, “Thank you for your support as Ben explores his opportunities to make a positive impact on his local community.” It also offers a mailing list you can join to stay up-to-date with what Higgins is doing.

Running for office would definitely be an exciting step for this Bachelor alum. We wish him all the best in his endeavors! But, seriously, how cool would it be to have a former Bachelor in office?

Amandla Stenberg Casually Talks Social Issues—Minutes Before Prom

17-year-old (!!!) Amandla Stenberg stunned us once again with their casual webcam chat for ROOKIE magazine, minutes before attending their senior prom! In the video, Stenberg comments on natural hair, self-love, sexuality and activism.

On self-love, Stenberg noted that this process takes time and is never really over and done with or sealed with a pretty bow. “Remember to be patient with yourself... learning to love yourself is a very tough and continual process,” they said. If only we all had this much brilliance and wisdom at 17!

Stenberg also spoke to the presence of bi-erasure, or the ignoring of non-normative sexualities. Stenberg says, “I’ve used the word bisexual just because I feel like for people who don’t necessarily know that vocabulary...it’s easier to just say that I’m bi.” In the video, Stenberg identifies themselves as pansexual, but admits that, because not many people are aware of this term, bisexual is a more convenient identifier. Even so, they say that when the word bisexual is used, “it can obviously oftentimes be kind of negatively conceived.”

Stenberg talked about activism and how to maintain one’s sense of optimism in the face of haters and a culture that doesn’t want to change its ways. They say, “emitting positivity [means] you are affecting other people... you are allowing other people to also be awesome and shine.” Stenberg maintains that positivity and optimism will win out over negativity, so long as we are passionate about the things we care about. “There’s an infinity in these small actions” that is very powerful, adds Stenberg.

Finally, Stenberg touched on the reactions and commentary they receive from critics of them and their politics, which they say they are able to let roll off their back because what critics have to say doesn’t really mean anything. Honestly, where is this young person’s book?! Amandla has so much coming their way, and we can’t wait to see where they take it!

Trump Protesters Throw Eggs and Sucker Punches at San Jose Rally

Another day, another scene of violence at a Donald Trump rally.

On Thursday evening in downtown San Jose, California, tensions between Trump supporters and protesters reached their peak, BuzzFeed News reports. Trump supporters left a rally at the San Jose Convention Center only to be met by a crowd of hundreds of protesters, which had grown exponentially since the beginning of the event. As expected, Trump's typically racist rhetoric gathered a sizable group of very angry people, many of whom were Latino.

Trump supporters hurled insults at the protesters from behind a line of police officers. The supporters were wrongly under the impression that the line of police extended much further and that the police would protect them. Unfortunately for them, their blockade of protection ended only a few yards away, leaving rally attendees extremely vulnerable to the violence that would follow.

Several fist fights broke out. One protester sucker-punched a Trump fan. Other Trump supporters had their “Make America Great Again” hats snatched from their heads; protesters burned the red hats on the ground and hung them from street signs as trophies. Another Trump-supporting woman decided to taunt a crowd of protesters—only to have eggs, bottles and other projectiles pelted at her.

The San Jose Police Department took a very relaxed approach to the mounting tension and stood solemnly as violence erupted, doing little to stop the fighting. According to BuzzFeed, the police department cited fear of officer safety and the possibility of causing more violence as the primary reason they did not step in until the very end of the brutal incident.

Freelance journalist Marcus DiPaola voiced a concern with San Jose's handling of the situation that many of us were probably thinking. “Morons,” DiPaola told The Washington Post. “How do you not staff 911 for an event of this size?”

San Jose mayor and Hillary Clinton supporter, Sam Liccardo, spoke out against the controversy and sided with the protesters. Liccardo criticized Trump for putting local police departments in situations to deal with the problems that Trump himself has created. "At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign," Liccardo said to the Associated Press.

This isn't the first time we've seen violence follow the "Make America Great" campaign trail—and it's surely not the last. As Hillary Clinton's campaign chair John Podesta Tweeted, "Violence against supporters of any candidate has no place in this election." To those passionate about keeping Trump out of office, let's use our voice peacefully and legally: At the polls.

UCLA Professors Refuse to Cancel Finals in Midst of Active Shooter Reports

UCLA students were understandably shaken up on Wednesday when one of their professors, William Klug, was killed in an apparent murder-suicide. Composing themselves and grieving were probably the two biggest things they were focused on. However, some professors didn’t think the tragedy was enough to reschedule finals.

Several tweets from UCLA let the world in on what was happening on campus. Naturally, several professors simply rescheduled the finals. One professor acknowledged that the students wouldn’t be in the mindset to take the final and gave the students a take home final instead.

Other professors took a different and less wise route.

The Daily Bruinreported that professor Vivian Lew instructed her students to leave their shelter and find an available computer to take their scheduled final. Lew was not the only professor to attempt to have students take their finals on time. Luckily, the school canceled all finals later that day.

The questionability of the professors' practices extended far beyond how they handled their finals. Another professor reportedly just closed the blinds when she was told to lockdown the classroom so that she could continue teaching. Yes, education is important, but lecturing with lights and a microphone could have alerted a shooter to an entire classroom full of very vulnerable students.

One French and global studies student even reported that her professor made her continue with an in-class presentation when reports of the gunman came in. "I had to continue a presentation while (an active shooter situation) was going on,” student Lara Jhaveri told the Daily Bruin. “I was on the verge of tears.”

In our lifetimes, we have counted more reports of school shootings than anyone would like to. There were 64 school shootings in 2015 alone. We know the severity of these situations and how many lives can be lost. Every precaution should be taking to keep a classroom safe if there is an active shooter on campus.

Even after the situation is over, students deserve the time to grieve in the wake of a death in their community. We go to school and think we will be safe there. When that safety is not guaranteed, we need time to compose ourselves again—without the stress of studying for a final.

The Way You’re Reacting to Taylor Swift’s Breakup is Probably Sexist, & Here’s Why

I have been a Taylor Swift fan for half of my life. For ten years I have gone to her concerts, memorized all the words to her songs, and posted about her on my blog, which she follows on Tumblr. Throughout the years I have also been an active member of the Taylor Swift Defense Squad. Whenever someone points out, “Has she ever considered that maybe she’s the problem?” or complains, “All she ever writes about are her breakups,” I am ready to provide counter-evidence, equipped with a list of songs that prove them wrong. For a while after 1989 was released, it seemed like the days of "Taylor hate" being trendy were over. She was winning countless awards, her style was flawless and everyone obsessed over her relationship with Calvin Harris. But as soon as they broke up, the familiar headlines and jokes returned. My Twitter feed is filled with headlines like “A Timeline of Taylor’s Love Life” and “Why Can’t She Keep A Man?” My friends have asked me, “Does this mean we are going to get a new album sooner?” The way people have reacted to this breakup is totally wrong, and it’s about time that everyone changed their perspective.

It's completely unfair that Taylor Swift is the one receiving the brunt of the negative feedback following her split. I have not seen a single headline asking how Calvin may have contributed, let alone a single headline about Calvin, period. In fact, we've seen the opposite—even from publications that tend to take a pro-women stance. In its piece covering Calvin's response to the rumors last night, Refinery29 lauded the DJ for his "mature" response, going on to say, "We hope that this leads to a Taylor Swift album of measured respect for her ex-lover." ...because a girl being honest about her emotions wouldn't be "mature"?

Taylor should not be so heavily criticized for the way she approaches love in her songwriting. She is able to take some of her most painful experiences and channel them creatively into making music that has helped millions of people cope with their own heartbreak. To twist that narrative into something shameful is unjust and inherently sexist. Other artists, including male artists, write and sing about their past relationships all the time. However, somewhere along the line Taylor became the poster child for slut-shaming and she's never been able to shed that stereotype.

Taylor Swift has a list of incredible accomplishments that is much longer than her list of rumored exes. She has won more Billboard Music Awards than any other artist, has ten Grammys (she is the youngest artist to win Album of the Year and the only female artist to win Album of the Year twice), and has won almost 300 other awards for her music, tours and social media presence over the past decade. This week she became the youngest person on Forbes’ list of the richest self-made women, and has been named the most charitable celebrity for four years in a row. Her multiple Guinness World Records, including “Most million-selling weeks on US albums charts” and “Most simultaneous US Hot 100 hits by a female,” are among the accolades that cement her as one of the greatest artists of all time, yet people cannot let go of the jokes about her love life and instead use them to undermine her success.

Whether or not you like Taylor’s music—or even if you like her as a person—allowing the sexist remarks about her to continue is bad for women everywhere. Women who have been able to turn their pain from past experiences into a multimillion dollar empire should be celebrated instead of criticized. Taylor’s generosity, openness and independence are traits that everyone can look up to, and she has inspired scores of her fans to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Her breakup with Calvin is undoubtedly a sad period in her life, and all this negative attention in the press and on social media is undoubtedly making it harder for her to heal. The next time you hear someone say “Calvin better watch out, Taylor is going to write a song about him!” think about what that comment means, and whether you actually find it funny. Tearing down Taylor Swift for her life choices may be popular, but it is not productive and there are better uses of your time than perpetuating the stigma surrounding women baring their emotions.

Your Perfect Gym Style, According to Your Zodiac Sign

If your workout wardrobe is in desperate need of a revamp or you’re losing motivation at the gym, some new activewear may be just what you need to boost your fitness confidence. This time, instead of aimlessly rifling through your old, permanently smelly gym tees or wearing those faded leggings again, try something new and put on an outfit that is undeniably you. Read on to see what you should wear the next time you hit the gym—according to your zodiac sign.

Aquarius

You’re known for your originality and independence, so show it in the weight room! Don’t be afraid to wear a bold outfit, like statement leggings and a strappy top. You also tend to be the humanitarian in your friend group, so consider buying your workout wear from a sustainable or charitable organization, like Alternative Apparel. Lean towards black, gray, or blue, as those are your power colors.

Pisces

You’re a water sign, so you probably enjoy swimming and other water sports. Your colors include sea green and purple, so keep those in mind when browsing for activewear. Search for swimsuits that will meet your athletic needs, and if you’re looking for everyday gym clothes, make them fun by incorporating mermaid-like elements or aquatic colors.

Aries

Your power colors include red and pink, and you tend to love comfortable clothes. Lean towards loose-fitting pieces and pair them with sneakers that will take you through even the toughest workout. After all you do love a physical challenge.

Taurus

You’re a woman with expensive taste—let that side of you shine when you’re shopping for workout clothes. Spending more on clothes that are high-quality and long-lasting will make the initial cost worth it in the long run. However, there are many brands that look and feel like they cost a fortune, but won’t break the bank. Try shopping at Athleta or test out Kate Hudson’s line, Fabletics. Blue, pink and green are your colors, so why not incorporate all three?

Gemini

You’re an intellectual and the queen of overthinking. Your mind is one of your best assets. Your best workouts are mindful, like pilates and yoga, so shop around for clothes that don’t distract you from your zen. Find fabrics that you love, but that won’t be noticeable while you’re holding your chair pose. Search for colors like soft yellows and greens.

Cancer

As an artistic sign, you have qualities like imagination and creativity. Try out artsy-looking activewear in bold colors, especially white and orange. You’re a water sign, so you tend to feel most energized when you’re near the water. While you’re picking out regular workout attire, take a look at some athletic swimsuits, because any water-based workout is going to motivate you.

Leo

As the most creative of the signs, you should opt for workout clothes with pops of color and fun patterns. You tend to be cheerful and you love anything bright and colorful. You’re energized by sunny colors like gold, orange, white and red—because they make the loudest statement.

Virgo

You’re the resident health nut of your friend group. You’re practical and hardworking, so the functionality of your workout gear is more important than the style. Hidden pockets in leggings? Must have. Sportswear that ventilates itself as you sweat? Um, need. That’s not to say that style isn’t important, though. You’re invigorated by nature and earthy colors like white, yellow, camel, forest green and burgundy. Shop around for styles that are versatile and make you feel like your best, most energized self.

Libra

You have incredible leadership skills and you’re the friendliest, most peaceful gal around. You enjoy finding harmony and balance, so you probably love workouts like barre, pilates and yoga. Like Virgo, you love the outdoors. Choose versatile pieces in your power colors—blue and green—that can take you from barre to a pavement-pounding trail run in no time.

Scorpio

You were born passionate, brave and determined. You’ll never quit a workout and you’re the first one to suggest trying new fitness trends like aquacycling and pole dancing. You love the intensity of a great gym session, and your clothes should reflect that. Choose outfits that can withstand even the sweatiest kickboxing class. Your sign is motivated most by colors like red, pink, rust and burgundy.

Sagittarius

You’re known for your great sense of humor, so try showing it in your workout clothes! Since you also enjoy the outdoors and adventuring, make sure your clothes can withstand a tough hike. Go for colors like purple, red and pink to feel extra powerful.

Capricorn

Your power colors are neutrals: brown, grey and black. You are disciplined and a dependable strategist; you tend to lean towards workouts that require endurance and patience, such as long runs. Studies show that compression shorts and leggings help your muscles maintain more power and use oxygen better, so keep this in mind when you're shopping for your next half-marathon.
