4 Signs Your Major Isn’t Right for You (& What to Do About It)

0
0

Senior year of high school seems so far away now. But thinking back, can you recall the hundreds of times parents, friends and peers asked you about what you were going to major in at college? Most of us answered back confidently with huge smiles on our faces. Sure, we might have been a bit naive back then, but we had the right idea—majors are supposed to make us feel excited and eager to learn.

When people ask you about your major today, do you still light up in the same way you did at the start of your college career? If your answer is a halfhearted nod or a varying form of hesitation, it might be time to reconsider your choice of major. Check out these four signs that your major just isn't right for you, and see what you can do about it!

1. You're doing poorly in your major classes

Classes for your major aren't meant to make you pull all your hair out or worry yourself into knots. If you find yourself doing poorly in classes for your major, chances are your major might not be right for you. Prerequisites are early indicators about whether or not you've made the right choice. If you're already struggling before you hit your major classes, it's a sign that you might want to rethink your major.

As a lover of science, Jaya Powell came into Duke University three years ago wanting to be a neuroscience major. Unfortunately, neuroscience came with a lot of prerequisite courses in areas she wasn't very strong in.

"My first semester I barely passed chem, and would have failed calculus if it weren't for the curve," Jaya says. "On the other hand, I excelled in my other humanities courses."

Jaya realized early on that her initial major wasn't right for her, so she decided to switch to linguistics and has been happier ever since.

If you've made it past all of your prerequisites without incident, however, "Hallelujah Chorus" is probably playing in your head (choir and all), and life seems pretty good. Once you actually start taking major courses, however, you realize that you're struggling hardcore in the classes that you're supposed to be good at. What happened?

While the difficult material can be to blame, it's probably not the whole story. It's possible that you might just not be interested in the subject anymore. After all, you can still struggle in a class even if you're a good student.

"If a student is falling behind in the class’s work, it might indicate that he or she is not interested," says Nancy Leighton, program administrator of Peer Support Services at Queens College. "Students who do not like their major almost always do significantly poorer in their classes than those who like their majors. The reason is motivation."

According to Leighton, students who aren't motivated to work won't put as much effort into their classes, which may result in lower grades.

"It is like the saying, 'Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,'" Leighton says. "This rings true even in undergrad. If you are majoring in something that excites you, you’ll be more inclined to go to class and learn about it and retain the information for the future."

Jaya has found that her tests aren't too strenuous anymore now that she's found the right major.

"For me, there's so much passion I have for my field it's almost scary!" Jaya says. "I'm excited for every assignment, and I even enjoy my midterms and finals because they give me a chance to demonstrate my knowledge."

Bad grades can indicate a lack of motivation, and a cure might be to simply find classes that genuinely interest you.

2. You don't like going to class anymore

As the lecture continues on, your eyelids seem more determined than ever to stick together, and you're helpless against their willpower. Your eyelids don't seem aware of the fact that it's two in the afternoon, so you can't even use the early morning as an excuse for nodding off in class. You just can't seem to stay engaged with the material, even though you're supposed to be majoring in it. If you find yourself wanting to sleep through or skip class, it's a sign that you aren't studying what you actually want to study.

Megan Sweet, a junior at Michigan State University, started off pre-med, but as her classes got harder and harder, she found herself losing interest.

"I couldn't get myself to pay attention in the classes," Megan says. "I was taking a writing and acting class to get arts credits required by the university, and my attitude was completely different in those classes. I found myself excited about getting up and going to class."

Megan Sweet ended up switching her major a total of four times before sticking to one. Now that she's found her calling in television production and screenwriting, classes don't seem like such a chore for her anymore.

Before Elodie Jean-Phillippe, a junior at Duke University, made the switched from a biology major to a political science major, she also found that she wasn't really enjoying her classes.

"I would get jealous of my friends talking about their classes because even though they complained, they really did love it," Elodie says.

Choosing the right major can mean the difference between sleep-inducing classes and classes that you actually look forward to every week. Four years is a short time. Before you know it, college will already be over, so there's no time to waste sleeping through classes or wishing you could take something different. If you don't like going to your classes anymore, it might not be a bad idea to try something new.

3. You're more interested in your unrelated extracurricular activities

Is there something that you absolutely love to do outside of class and wish you could spend all day doing if you could? Whether you’re blogging, attending figure-drawing sessions or volunteering at a local organization, extracurricular activities are often overlooked as something people do just for fun, but these activities actually have the potential to turn into something more.

Rebecca Shinners, a recent graduate of Boston University, originally started out as a political science major at Tulane University and did well in her major classes. One of her extracurricular activities inspired her to take a completely new path.

"I think what made me realize I wanted to change majors is that I started writing for Her Campus in my free time, and I could just really see it turning into something that I did for the rest of my life," Shinners says. "When I transferred to BU, I went into the College of Communication, where they gave me a more practical look at advertising, PR and journalism, and I was able to find the best fit for me."

Rachel Cisto has a similar story. Now a senior, Rachel started at the University of Hartford as a physics major because she had liked going to Space Camp and joining her high school's robotics team. When she got to school, however, she ended up joining the Student Television Network.

"As I went through the semester, I realized I was enjoying the things I was doing for STN more than the things I was doing for my major," Rachel says. "Then, at the end of the semester, we went on a field trip to one of the local TV stations where some of our alumni work, and I had a ‘flashbulb moment’ where I realized what I wanted to do with my life. I emailed my adviser at 3 a.m. saying I needed to switch to journalism, and the rest is history!"

So pay attention to what you're really into, whether it's in the academic realm or not. Who knows? Maybe your favorite hobby will turn into an actual job somewhere down the line!

4. You picked your major because you wanted to please your parents

Whatever major you applied to college with seems to have just stuck. Maybe you were planning on switching it once you started attending college, but somehow you never got around to it. If you had a feeling that your initial choice of major might not have been the right fit, don't be afraid to explore your options.

Dylan Ebraheem, a senior at Montclair State University, originally applied to the school as a biology major not because he liked it, but because he wanted to please his parents.

"I realized before September started that it just wasn't something I was in love with or could see myself doing," Dylan says. "So in August, I switched from bio to English."

However, after experiencing a difficult time in a professor's English class, Dylan felt disheartened, but then realized that he was just in the wrong field again.

"I remember the time I had gone to the Met in New York to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit," Dylan says. "I had been in awe and fell hopelessly in love with fashion. I switched to the fashion major and haven't looked back."

Dylan says his switch to a fashion major caused more doors to open for him than anything else before. Now with 10 internships under his belt, he has found his calling in fashion PR and social media—all because he did what felt right to him.

"It takes time, lots of thought and experimenting," Dylan says. "Sometimes you want to please others, but in the end you should only be making yourself happy in doing something that you genuinely care about."

What happens next?

Whether you've been having doubts about your choice of major or you recently had an epiphany that your major just isn't right for you, don't be afraid to do something about it, just like countless other college students have.

Leighton suggests speaking with a counselor about your concerns first.

"The counselor could help [students] determine why they picked the major in the first place," Leighton says. "Oftentimes, students pick majors that they think will make them money, or their parents wanted them to. With the help of a counselor, students might be able to get to the root of their issues with the major and possibly explore their true interests in pursuit of a new major."

Of course, it's hard to pick one thing and stick with it, so it's also not a bad idea to open up your possibilities by taking classes in a number of areas instead of being limited by your major. Megan has firsthand experience with finding her passions through taking a wide variety of classes before settling down with one major.

"I came to the realization that I am here to further my education, and I should study something that I actually could see myself doing," Megan says. In addition, it's important to consider how many classes you have already taken for your major, as well as how many credits your new major will be.

"This could be an important exploration for students trying to graduate in four years, such as those who receive financial aid," Leighton says. "This could indicate to students how many more semesters they would need to graduate."

If you have considered all these issues and are set on changing majors, most schools are reasonable about allowing their students to make the switch.

"All it took was a trip to the registrar's office to change my major," Elodie says. "It was that simple: I filled out a form, and three days later, my major was changed."

And remember, while your major is certainly important, it isn't everything. Your major doesn't have to determine your final career path, because it's about experience, too.

"Although it is important to have some idea what you want to do after you graduate and develop a loose ‘path,’ the undergraduate major isn’t the be-all and end-all of your life goals," Leighton says. "Furthermore, graduate programs are becoming more and more necessary to even get a salary-paying job, so the undergraduate major is becoming less significant."

So instead of becoming overly concerned about your career and forgetting to enjoy yourself in college, keep an open mind and try to find a major that you're truly passionate about! Remember, your choice of major isn't something that's written in stone. You might find that sometimes, the best things come from the most unexpected places.

Bella Hadid Could Be Going to the Olympics

If you didn't already believe the Hadid sisters are taking over the world, you will after reading this. We saw both Gigi and Bella take fashion month by storm; between both girls, they've covered pretty much every major show, with Gigi walking the likes of DVF and Anna Sui, and Bella hitting the runways for Moschino, Marc Jacobs and more.

Their skills don't end there! In an interview with PORTER magazine, Bella revealed that she's training for the 2016 Olympics—in horseback riding. It's a passion she's had pretty much "since [she] could walk"—she started when she was just three years old. "My devotion stemmed from my mom's love of horses," she said, explaining how she was introduced to the sport.

Bella, who is a nationally-ranked equestrian, told the magazine that horseback riding is what keeps her level and helps her maintain focus. "You know how every model is like, 'I do yoga.'" she said. "Well, I find horses have the same effect. You have to put your ego aside and concentrate on making the horse do the things you want it to do, and move in the way you want it to move."

We already can't wait for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro—we'll definitely be Team Bella!

You're Going to Want to Make This For Breakfast Today

Breakfast has never been my favorite meal, but I’ve found a few ways of enjoying the most important meal of the day. Today, I thought I would do a little baking. This is my mom’s zucchini bread recipe, in muffin form.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cups vegetable oil (it’s a lot, I know…)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped zucchini (I use a cheese grater, medium to fine size)
  • 3/4 cups walnut pieces (optional)

DIRECTIONS

First, combine the granulated sugar and brown sugar with the oil and eggs and mix it together. In a separate bowl, mix the rest of the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon). Gradually add it to the sugar/egg/oil mixture. I usually do this in 3 steps so it’s easier to mix in. By now, it’s looking pretty thick and dry. But once you add the grated up zucchini it will become really thin from the moisture in the vegetable.

I chose to make muffins instead of a loaf. It made 18 muffins or you can separate the batter into 2 loaf pans. For the loaf, bake at 350 for about 55 minutes. For muffins, bake at 350 for about 22 minutes or until toothpicks come out clean.

9 Movie Character Halloween Costumes for 2015

0
0

Halloween—the only time of year when you can dress up as your favorite movie character without being judged. (That is, unless you're participating in some sort of costume contest.) With all the amazing movies released in 2015, there's a wide variety of sure-to-be beloved movie characters to dress up as on Halloween. And let's not forget those classic movie costumes that never get old. We've collected nine options below that we think you're going to love.

1. Scarlet Overkill from Minions

Let's be honest, the actual minions are so last year. Step up your game as the one and only sexy villan, Scarlet Overkill. Little minions everywhere will drool over you! Plus, you probably already have the strapless red dress, black tights and black heels you need to copy Scarlet's look. Just add her black elbow-length gloves and get a short black wig to complete the look.

2. The Plastics

On Halloween, we wear pink! If you're going solo, Regina George will easily be the most recognizable of the Mean Girls. Flippy mini skirts and pastel cardigans—well, basically anything you could buy at Abercrombie & Fitch in the 2000s—will work best. But if you and your friends are planning a group costume, try to recreate as many characters from the film as possible. Props to whoever decides to be Damian in a blue hoodie and dark sunnies.

3. The personalities from Inside Out

We're obsessed with the varying emotions that come into play in Inside Out. That's why we're not limiting our costume options to just the female characters. The outfits are simple enough to replicate with something similar in your own closet or finds from the thrift store. If you really want to impress, use body paint to get just the right tint for your chosen character, and don't forget the wig!

4. The Guardians of the Galaxy

Not feeling the whole sexy kitten look? Go as one of Marvel's intergallatic criminals turned heroes. For Gamora, you'll obviously need tons of green body paint. But we have no doubt that you can pull off any of these ensembles after seeing this Star Lord costume.

5. The Barden Bellas from Pitch Perfect 2

Round up your girls for this one! Because who hasn't dreamt of being a Barden Bella? Ditch the round one flight attendant uniforms (hello upgrade!) for the sequel's sleeker, more modern styles. You'll need a white tank, zipper-accented skinny jeans, a navy vest and some high-top sneaks.

6. Cher from Clueless

AS IF! Not really, though, because this nod-to-the-'90s costume is timeless. A somewhat boxy blazer with a button-up underneath, a plaid uniform skirt, knee-high socks and strappy heels will help you perfect Cher's look. Warning: some people may mistake you for Taylor Swift.

7. Katniss Everdeen

With the final chapter in the Hunger Games saga hitting theaters in November, you've got one last chance to honor Katniss. This isn't her typical warrior-esque look, but it is unexpected. What could have been her wedding dress—if her wedding hadn't been a sham and all—is even a DIY creation.

8. Holly from Breaksfast at Tiffany's

What a classic look. Your go-to LBD will definitely come in handy for this costume. Add flashy accessories, like pearls, a tiara and black elbow-length gloves, to emphasize the Audrey of it all.

9. The cast of Bridesmaids

For this costume, you can either recreate the exact look of these funny ladies or use that old bridesmaid dress that's been collecting dust in your closet. See, she told you that you'd be able to wear it again.

25 Signs You're a Creative Writing Major

0
0

Ever since elementary school, you’ve always been a writer. You’ve found that the best way to express yourself is through writing, be it poetry or short stories. So, in college, you thought to yourself, “How can I ensure that I will never get a job ever?” The next day, you declared a creative writing major. We writers are a little (read: a lot) neurotic, intensely sensitive and self-critical. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Here are the 25 signs you’re a creative writing major. Oh, and once you’re done reading, get back to that blank Word document you’re avoiding. That story is due tomorrow.

1. When friends and family ask what you’re doing after graduation, you’re just like:

If you major in something you love, you'll never work a day in your life. Because that industry is not hiring.

2. You know what you’re good at, and you stick to it

Don't talk to me about my math SAT score.

3. You might not have final exams, but you have something even more daunting: The Portfolio

4. Your approach to beginning a new piece is like this:

5. When you go into your workshop, you’re like:

6. Once your piece has been workshopped, you feel like:

No, YOUR story is cliché.

7. MFA applications got you feeling like:

8.  To everyone else, Iowa is a random (and boring) state in the midwest. But to you...

9. You strongly support Ernest Hemingway’s famous philosophy/slogan

Write drunk, edit sober.

10. Your writing instructor manages to make everything sound sexual

It's USUALLY not intentional.

11. When your professor tells you your poems have to be in iambic pentameter you're just like:

Ain't nobody got time.

12. You go to readings actually for the reading, not just the free food and wine

The wine doesn't hurt, though.

13. Your department has awkward tension with the English department

14. The successes of Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight are actually offensive to you

15. That said, you've definitely written fan fiction

SNAPE & LILY FOREVER

16. That one time you got published, you were like:

17. Every time your piece is rejected, you're like:

18. Lugging your Norton Anthology to class is the bane of your existence

But for real, you can find all of those poems online...

19. When you read work you had written the year before, you're like:

20. Everyone in your major is either insufferable or amazingly talented and kind

The greatest people you will ever meet. And the worst.

21. And actually, you prefer books to people

Your squad consists of e e cummings, Virginia Woolf, John Steinbeck and David Foster Wallace.

22. Though you're super turned on by people with excellent vocabularies

Oh, you got an 800 in Critical Reading? Want to be my boyfriend?

23. You're obsessed with developing "a voice," and you have a couple of go-to moves by now

24. When people think your major is easy, you're like:

Let me see YOU write sestina, then.

25. And even though writing sometimes seems impossible, you truly love what you do

Cheers to my fellow poets and writers out there!

The Best Scary Halloween Costumes

0
0

Do you prefer haunted houses to bobbing for apples? How about fake blood over candy corn? If you know what Halloween is really about (scaring people!), then we've got some super-spooky costume ideas for you. We've compiled a list of the most terrifying costumes imaginable, but with you in mind. We know even the biggest horror junkies among us like to look amazing when we go out, so we've put together a bunch of costumes that are scary but still cute!

1. Zombie

This Halloween, undead is the new black. The zombie look is easy to create if you don't mind applying a little makeup! The best part about zombie costumes is that you can make them out of practically any outfit. Want to show some school pride? Dress as a zombie cheerleader and rock some undead school spirit! Maybe dancing is more your style? Try dressing as an undead ballerina!

No matter what outfit you choose, the makeup is what's going to sell the costume. Make yourself pale and sickly looking (think gray and pale-green face paint), then add fresh bite marks, bruises and rotten wounds all over your body. You can find makeup to create the perfect zombie costume at any Halloween store. Don't forget to get creative with this one - we can't wait to see a zombie professor or an undead barista!

2. Vampire

Vampires are some of the hottest monsters around. This costume has the added benefit of being one where you can dress in a fun, sexy outfit and not have to give up dressing as a blood-sucking creature. Play up on this unique balance of sexy and scary - make sure to pair dark, dramatic clothing with tons of fake blood. Wear a complete purple lace gown, or stick to a tight burgundy shirt or black corset-style top and leather pants if you want to go as a more modern vampire.

You're going to need some fangs, a bunch of fake blood and maybe even a victim! Don't forget dramatic makeup to finish off the look. Remember, vampires are dead, too, so go pale and sunken on the face, and make your eyes really pop with lots of dark, smoky makeup. For an even spookier look, you can try some purple colored contacts!

3. Bloody Mary

Remember when you used to scare yourself silly at sleepovers when you and your friends tried to summon Bloody Mary in the dark? There are a ton of different versions of the legend, but most involve a mirror, a murder and a ghostly woman covered in blood. No matter what version you whispered about as a child, there is no denying that Bloody Mary was one of the most terrifying things you could think of.

If you don't mind the sight of fake blood, this could be the costume for you. Dress in all white, including white face paint, to make yourself look as ghostlike as possible. Then, it's time for the blood! Splatter fake blood over absolutely every piece of clothing you're wearing, and add some blood to your face as well. Finish the look with a handheld mirror and a plastic knife covered in fake blood, and you've become every preteen girl’s worst nightmare.

4. Medusa

Channel your inner femme fatale with this costume! Medusa is a legendary woman with a glance that was said to turn men to stone. According to legend, Medusa's hair was full of snakes, so there's some really cool potential with this outfit.

Try dressing in gauzy shades of green and gray to evoke a statuesque feeling, and wear dramatic makeup in similar shades. The most fun part, though, is the hair! Section your hair into lots of tiny ponytails, and use temporary hair dye to make your whole head green. Spray dye will work great because it gives your hair good hold. Shape each section into a little twist, and soon you'll have a head full of snakes. You could even get some little toy snakes and weave them in, too!

5. Siren

Digging the reference to Greek mythology (hey, classics majors!), but not sure that Medusa is your style? Dress as a Siren! The Sirens were infamous because of their haunting, enchanted singing voices, which they used to lure men to their deaths. Although they sounded like beautiful women from afar, legend says that they were actually huge, terrifying half-birds. That just means that your costume has to include feathers, and maybe a beak!

When doing your makeup for this outfit, make sure you add some eyeliner wings to get a bit of an avian look, or think along the lines of the eye makeup from Black Swan. Wear some fitted clothing to up the sex appeal—a shell bra could be perfect here—and stick to blues and greens since these creatures lived on cliffs overhanging the ocean. Find a way to work in feathers, whether that means creating your own wings via a hot glue gun or just adding a feather boa to the outfit. Carry a small musical instrument, like a toy harp or lyre, that you can use to lure in men and finish off the look!

6. Headless Anything

If you feel like going for a slightly goofy approach, try going as a headless person! There are many variations on this costume, and they're all pretty hilarious - and terrifying! Most of them involve stuffing a fake body that rises above your shoulders, with your head peeping out from somewhere in the middle. Arrange the arms of the shirt as if you're holding your own head, and you'll be sure to get a lot of horrified looks!

This costume gives you tons of creativity, too. Go as a headless waitress, a headless sorority girl, a headless bride, a headless soccer player... or release your inner history major with a headless Marie Antoinette! If you name it and can imagine the costume, then go for it.

7. Graduation Day

Let's be honest, collegiettes, all the scary costumes we've suggested above pale in comparison to this one! It's hard to imagine something scarier than graduating from college. All that free time, and no more dorm sleepovers and frat parties? Terrifying. Prepare yourself for the big day now by dressing up in your cap and gown this Halloween. Get creative, too, and look a little further than graduation. A great group costume is to dress as what you want to be when you grow up. You and all your friends can dress as your dream (or nightmare!) professions.

So collegiettes, are you ready to let your scary side loose? Let us know what you think of these ideas.

Gender Fluidity: Everything You Need to Know

0
0

With people like Miley Cyrus and Ruby Rose choosing to identify as gender fluid, you may be wondering what exactly gender fluidity means. With societal definitions of gender changing at a rapid pace, it’s important to stay informed and educated. We’ve talked to Lauren Lubin, President and Executive Producer of We Exist – Beyond the Binary, and University of California, Los Angeles alum Loki Leigh to get the low down on what gender fluidity is and how you can be a good ally. Read up, collegiettes!

What is gender fluidity?

Gender fluidity, or being genderqueer, is defined as when a person does not fit into either the male or female category. “Gender fluidity in its most basic definition is redefining gender as something that is not rigid, but rather exists as a spectrum,” Lubin says. “In our culture, predominately we have seen gender as very binary, either male or female. The reality is gender fluidity actually challenges that and says that no, it’s not either one or the other, it could be many different things: either between and/or outside male or female.”

People who identify as gender fluid may fluctuate between genders or feel like neither gender at all. “Gender fluidity is inclusive to everyone, even those who identify as male or female because no one neatly fits within gender constructs,” Lubin adds. “There might be someone who identifies fully as female but for example in a more androgynous or masculine way.” It’s important to remember that a person’s gender does not have to be completely on one side of the spectrum. How people choose to identify themselves is a personal preference.

“I experience gender fluidity as a...flux of my gender identity,” Loki shares. “While, on the average, I generally don't fell aligned with any particular gender, there are days where I feel more masculine than I do feminine. Some days I wear a chest binder and present more masculine, while others I wear a bra and decide to present more feminine.”

Is gender fluidity an ongoing journey?

People like Miley Cyrus have previously identified as female and are now using the term “gender fluid.” Discovering your gender identity is an ongoing process that can change and evolve throughout your life. “I definitely think that there is an evolution of human identity throughout the course of our lives, and gender is just part of that identity,” Lubin says.

“For some people, even who are transitioning within male or female, there is a time within that transition that the way in which we identify to the world may not be as binary as the world thinks gender is,” they say. “There is a middle ground, and for some people, that middle ground is their home, that’s where they exist and who they are.” Just like a person’s sexuality may change over time, their gender identity can change as well. Be patient with your friends and peers as they continue to discover who they truly are.

“I don't like the gendering of clothing or make up, and often tend to dress without really thinking much about my gender, but more thinking of how much time I'm interested in putting into my appearance and what I will feel most comfortable in,” Loki says. Since gender fluidity is like a spectrum, there are no set rules for how a person should act or dress. There’s nothing wrong with challenging society’s gender norms!

How should you refer to gender fluid people?

When it comes to referring to gender fluid people, things can get confusing. The pronouns that people choose to use are all about what they prefer, so it’s important to ask someone before using a specific pronoun. “We see in today’s world that ‘they/them/their’ are something that people are coming to embrace more and understand,” Lubin shares. Some other pronouns people may choose to use are “ze,” “hir” or no pronoun at all.

“If someone tells you their pronouns or name, accept that that is the way they identify and refer to them as such, even if it changes regularly,” Loki advises. “Stand up for their names and pronouns when they're not around. If your friend prefers different pronouns at different times, ask them how they would like to be referred to when they're absent. Recognize that these changes within yourself can take time, and always strive to change yourself for the better.” Be patient with yourself and your friends, and you’ll be surprised how things will fall into place!

How can you be a good ally?

Being a good ally is extremely important, no matter the situation. Your gender fluid friends are likely going through a lot, so you should do what you can to make them feel more accepted. “Because non-binary gender is still something that’s very new within our cultural conversation, it’s necessary to educate,” Lubin says. “Educate yourself, and educate others. Education is power.” Read up about gender fluidity and find out how you can help your gender fluid friends and peers. Learning terminology and visiting educational websites are good ways to start.

“The second part of that is help,” Lubin adds. “There’s a lot of work that has to be done; people that are gender non-conforming already have to deal with a lot and already have obstacles to overcome, and to be a good ally is to help. Be assertive and supportive.” By staying educated and aware of what is going on in regards to gender fluidity, you are providing a support system for your family members or friends who may be feeling alone.

“Be kind, compassionate, and try to understand,” Loki says. “Listen. Everyone experiences gender differently, and there's no wrong way to present your gender identity.” Just because you may choose to identify as one gender or another does not mean someone else has to be binary as well. Showing care and understanding is crucial.

Now that you know what gender fluidity is and how to be a good ally, you should be in better shape when it comes to explaining gender fluidity to others or being supportive of someone you know. Be sure to stay educated and remember that a person is not defined by their gender identity; it’s only one aspect of who they are.

Getting a Degree at MIT Just Became a Whole Lot Cheaper

0
0

For many college students, money is a constant concern. That fancy degree is expensive! But MIT just took a big step toward making certain degree programs more affordable and accessible.

Yahoo! Finance reports that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has offered free online courses to students for the past four years, will now allow for those courses to be counted toward a degree. The STEM oriented school will let students take a semester of free courses in one of MIT’s 24 graduate programs, including microbiology, real estate development and oceanography. After paying a fee of $1,500 and passing an exam, students can then receive a MicroMaster’s credential, which counts as half of the college’s one-year master’s degree program in supply chain management.

Students who succeed in the first online half of the program can take another exam to apply for the second semester on campus. For that semester, they'll have to pay $33,000 (about half the cost of program’s yearlong tuition).

“Anyone who wants to be here now has a shot to be here,” MIT President L. Rafael Reif told Yahoo!. “They have a chance to prove in advance that they can do the work.”

The courses are scheduled to begin this winter, and the program hopes to bring about 40 students to campus each semester from the online program.

MIT is not the first university to begin the transfer of free online programs to school certified credential. Arizona State University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Illinois all have similar programs.

Hopefully, these programs will help in maintaining the balance between finances and academics, because as any collegiette knows, trying to find the money to for takeout during those all-nighters is struggle enough.

7 Productive Things to Do Instead of Netflix

0
0

If there’s one thing most women of the 21st century have in common, it’s a Netflix addiction.  There’s nothing better than spending the afternoon cozied up behind your computer screen fawning over Nathan in One Tree Hill or McDreamy in Grey’s Anatomy, right? Wrong.

Kelly Hoffman, a licensed psychotherapist, warns against spending too much time on Netflix.  “The danger of too much time in front of a computer screen is that individuals are not enjoying their own reality,” she says. “They tend to isolate and spend too much time alone, which can lead to depression.  Too much computer time takes you away from other activities.” We agree!

To fight the addiction, we’ve come up some fun alternatives that you can complete in an hour. It’s time to switch it up!

1. Get cooking

Take an hour out of your day to learn how to cook something new! Look up a cooking class in your area and go with a few friends. While it’s more likely you will find a greater number of options in a metropolitan area, if you dig deep enough, there should be some in your area, too. You can also try searching local gourmet stores to see if they offer any classes.

When looking for a cooking class, make sure to get the details. There are classes that offer instruction for one particular meal, some for several meals and themed classes where you can learn to make dessert or a specific kind of pastry.  All classes are different; you just need to think about your own preferences.

Hoffman speaks to the benefit of trying things that are hands-on. “Substituting activities where you’re really learning something new for your typical hour a day spent on television will slowly but surely improve your lifestyle and enhance your positive perception of yourself,” she says. You’ll have fun while you’re there and get to taste the deliciousness of whatever you create once you’re done.

2. Get spinning

Challenge yourself to a spin class.  Cycling classes are a great way to get active without getting bored! Whether you choose to do SoulCycle, Flywheel or an on-campus spin class, you’re bound to shed a few calories and work up enough endorphins to get you going for the rest of the day.

Flywheel costs around $20 to $30 a class, depending on your region. SoulCycle, a more expensive option, costs $34 per class but offers a $20 class for your first ride. They both offer package plans for multiple classes. Spin classes depart from the feeling of a regular bike ride and incorporate different positions, dance moves and sometimes an upper-body segment. Become a stronger you instead of spending the day behind the computer screen!

3. Plant an herb pot

Test out your green thumb with an herb pot.  An herb pot is a great alternative to planting an herb garden outside that could be subject to harsh weather and hungry animals. You’ll probably need time to go to a grocery store or gardening store to pick up your supplies, so this could turn into an all-day project if you want. By planting an herb garden, you’re not only taking part in a fun activity, but you’re setting yourself up for success with all of the fresh herbs you can incorporate into future snacks and meals.  There’s nothing trendier than a girl with her own herb pot!

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Choose your herbs.  It’s best to start with only a few so they don’t get overcrowded in the pot. Pick from oregano, mint, basil, thyme or some of your other favorite herbs. Make sure your pot is unglazed terracotta instead of plastic to allow for air and moisture to pass through (there should be drainage holes at the bottom of the pot as well).
  2. Prepare the pot. Fill your pot about a quarter of the way with gravel.  The gravel, as well as the holes in the pot, is important for drainage.
  3. Plant the herbs. Fill the pot with soil-based compost and then place the herb plants in the pot about 15 centimeters apart. Fill the gaps between the plants with compost.
  4. Watch it grow. Keep the pot in a sunny windowsill and make sure to feel the soil several times a week so you know when it needs water.

The crisp and refreshing smell of fresh herbs will be your reward for all your hard work!

4. Treat yourself to a spa hour

Spend an hour pampering yourself! Balancing academics, extracurriculars and a social life can be exhausting, and we think you deserve to be pampered. Instead of unwinding behind the computer screen when your homework is done, take some time out of your day to treat yourself. Put on some spa music, throw on a face mask and paint your nails.

Taking some time to pamper yourself and relax before bed will help you ease into a much-needed deep sleep. Additionally, Dr. Alexander Mauskop, a professor of clinical neurology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and a fellow at the American Academy of Neurology, says that Netflix at night is never a good idea. “Looking at any screen at night before going to bed suppresses the release of melatonin in the brain,” he says. “The release of melatonin makes us go to sleep, and its suppression can cause insomnia.”

So the next time you have the urge to get a show in before bed, think of the side effects! Give yourself the gift of spa time instead.

5. Phone an old friend

You may be able to connect with hundreds of people on social media every day, but you shouldn’t replace real one-on-one friend time with Facebook chats or Instagram likes. Instead of spending an hour on Netflix, text a friend you haven’t seen in a while to plan a catch-up phone call. After all, there’s only so much love you can fit into a Facebook conversation!

Hoffman agrees. “A lot of times I see people hiding behind their computer screens,” she says. “It’s important to have interactions beyond the social media outlets that so many people take part in these days. Talking to someone in person or over the phone can really be therapeutic.”

Having a conversation on the phone doesn’t require all the effort of an in-person meet-up but will be a great way to catch up with a friend you haven’t had the chance to talk to in a while.  College is a great time to meet new people, but it’s important to treasure the friends of your past, too. Take the initiative and reach out to a friend you’ve been missing. We promise you won’t regret it!

6. Perfect some new yoga poses

Use your free hour to learn some new yoga poses! Yoga is a great stress reliever and will be much more calming than an hour behind your computer screen. If you’re a beginner, look up a few simple poses online and try them. It’ll feel amazing to stretch your body in new ways. If you’re already a total yogi, try out a few new poses that are challenging for you, like a headstand or a back bend.

“Sitting or lying in one position for long periods of time can cause neck pains and headaches,” Dr. Mauskop says.  Be kind to your body and spend some time nurturing it! Goodbye, Netflix; Namaste, yoga time.

7. Read a newspaper

While it may sound simple and clichéd, knowing what’s happening all around the world is important. There’s nothing worse than getting caught in a conversation about current events to which you have nothing to contribute!  So instead of letting yourself be lazy behind a computer screen, make yourself read through an entire newspaper.  Even if you do it once a week, you’ll be gaining something essential.

So the next time you feel Netflix calling to you, fight back! We love Netflix just as much as you do, but sometimes it’s healthy to switch it up and try something new.  All of these alternatives are easy and fun, and they won’t take more than an hour. Who knows—maybe you’ll develop a new passion along the way!

Are You a Compulsive Texter?

0
0

It's likely that one of the first things you do when you wake up each morning is check your phone for texts. Texting is a great way to stay in-the-know and communicate with people—but is all the texting we do becoming a problem?

Multiple studies have been conducted that link texting to lower grades, specifically while college students did homework or were in class. Keeping your phone by your side or texting friends during a lecture may not seem like a huge issue, but "compulsive texting" can be a bigger deal than it appears to be.

Since texting is such a huge part of our daily lives, we may find it hard to put the phone down and focus on class or sleep, for that matter. Texting and internet use before bed have been linked to sleep issues since students stay up late on their phones or get woken up by them during the night.

In 2012, 75 percent of all teenagers texted, and the average number of texts sent per day was 60. According to the New York Times, a new study administered looked at problematic texting among eighth-grade students. Among 356 students, 12 percent of the girls were compulsive texters, most sending more than 100 texts messages per day.  Fourteen percent of the girls who were compulsive texters reported being C students, while only 4 percent of average texters reported being C students.

Is texting getting in the way of your grades? An experiment conducted among college students found that students who didn't text during class ended up remembering more and doing better on a quiz—You may want to think twice before pulling your phone out during lecture.

T.I. Doesn't Think a Woman is Capable of Being President

0
0

T.I. was recently interviewed by DJ Whoo Kid for WorldStarHipHop, where he talked about presidential candidates including Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. When asked about Clinton, T.I. said:

"Not to be sexist but, I can't vote for the leader of the free world to be a woman. Just because, every other position that exists, I think a woman could do well. But, the president? It's kinda like, I just know that women make rash decisions emotionally—they make very permanent, cemented decisions—and then later, it's kind of like it didn't happen, or they didn't mean for it to happen. And I sure would hate to just set off a nuke. [Other leaders] will not be able to negotiate the right kinds of foreign policy; the world ain't ready yet. I think you might be able to get the Loch Ness Monster elected before [a woman]. It's not right, but I'm just saying..."

You can watch the full interview below. His comments about Hillary begin around 13:20.

Sounds pretty ridiculous, right? T. I. later apologized via Twitter after receiving backlash for his comments.

Do you think he's being sincere? Those were some pretty harsh comments.

8 Halloween Costumes Every '90s Girl Remembers

0
0

Halloween is a great opportunity to dress up like today's celebs and fictional characters, but there's nothing like reliving our favorite decade on October 31. If you're dying to embark on a blast from the past, check out these eight costumes that every '90s girl will definitely remember.

1. Cher and Dionne from Clueless

To capture the essence of Cher and Dionne from the 1995 movie starring leading ladies Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash, be sure to track down a pair of plaid skirt/blazer combos, and don't forget the knee-high socks and matching handbags. To really top it off, replicate Dionne's—as Cher describes it—"Dr. Seuss" hat. A thrift shop is probably the best place to start your shopping.

2. The Spice Girls

This '90s pop sensation never fails as a group costume for five besties and leaves plenty of options for every type of getup, from modest to wild. Let the more reserved members of your group go as Baby Spice and Sporty Spice, and let your risk-taking friends go nuts with Scary Spice or Ginger Spice ensembles. To round out the group, Posh Spice gets to wear the highest heels, of course.

3. The Powerpuff Girls

Good for a group of three or as a solo costume, the Powerpuff Girls are a '90s girl's go-to. The degree of the costume can vary from something as simple as wearing the crime-fighting gals' signature colors to making cartoon eyes with plastic glasses to really sell it.

4. Lola Bunny from Space Jam

The most prominent female character from the 1996 classic, Lola Bunny is a fun costume if you want to resurrect the Looney Tunes. All you need is a "Toon Squad" jersey (homemade is perfectly acceptable), a cotton ball tail and some rabbit ears. Carrying a basketball around is a great touch if you want to add a prop.

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Though Buffy didn't make her TV debut until 1997, her style was very '90s. Leather—especially red—is a must, whether it's the pants, the jacket or both. Throw in a wooden stake for good measure, and you're sure to be mistaken for Sarah Michelle Gellar.

6. Wayne and Garth from Wayne's World

If you want a throwback costume, it doesn't get any more '90s than Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar. A fun gender-bend idea for you and a friend, all you'll need is messy blonde hair and greasy, black hair plus the coordinating outfits. For Wayne, a black trucker hat, a plain black shirt and ripped loose jeans will complete the look, and Garth's outfit is just as simple. Pick any white band tee and throw on an unbuttoned flannel over it; then, add some black framed glasses. For added effect, carry around drumsticks or a fake guitar.

7. Fembots from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

For someone looking for an edgier costume, the Fembots are a great way to show some skin. A pink slip dress—preferably with a fuzzy accent—will do, and be sure to get as much of a bee-hive going in your hair as possible to capture that '70s vibe.

8. Baywatch babes

Ever dreamed of running in slow motion on the beach? Dressing up like a Baywatch babe for Halloween is a good place to start. Buy a red one-piece swimsuit, and you're good to go. A matching life raft, whistle and any other lifeguard necessities are a nice final touch.

Playboy Will No Longer Feature Nude Models

0
0

When you think of Playboy, you probably think of their reputation for publishing naked pictures of women. But that's no longer what the magazine's going for.

"As part of a redesign that will be unveiled next March, the print edition of Playboy will still feature women in provocative poses. But they will no longer be fully nude,"the New York Times reports.

Since Internet pornography is so easy to access these days, there is no longer a demand for nude images in print. While Playboy and other magazines used to be extremely popular with teens, they have been replaced by smart phones and laptops. According to the Alliance for Audited Media, Playboy's circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to 800,000 currently.

Playboy's website got rid of nudes last year—causing younger readers to flock to the site and traffic to jump dramatically. So it's understandable why the magazine will now do the same.

The magazine will now feature images similar to the ones on their Instagram, which were modified to abide by nudity policies. Although this is a big change, it makes sense. Playboy has no reason to feature nudes in their publication when naked pictures are so easily accessible elsewhere on the internet, and when it's clear younger readers prefer less racy images.

What do you think about this change, collegiettes?
