9 Ways To Have A Less Stressful Semester

You barely got through last semester without having a mental breakdown. All the partying, late nights and procrastination caught up to you in the form of one big stress snowball. This semester, you’re set on making changes to ensure that an avalanche doesn’t happen—and the good news is, you don't have to do it alone! We spoke to collegiettes about their experiences with stressful semesters and what they are now doing to make this semester less stressful. We also spoke to Susan Vincent, a counselor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, to get you expert tips on how to stay calm amidst all the craziness of college.

1. Be self-aware and realize which changes you need to make

Every collegiette is different. So while there are many great tips below, keep in mind that what works for one person might not work for another. Vincent suggests looking back at the stressful and successful times in your past semesters.

“Depending on who you are, maybe you want to start [looking] at what is causing you the most stress. So maybe you’ll start there,” says Vincent. “[For] other folks, maybe change is more difficult for them so they start [to change the] smallest thing.” She says it doesn’t matter what the first step is, what matters is that you make a change—no matter how little.

“Often with students, especially if they have a bad semester, they want to add on more [responsibilities] rather than slow down, look at what went wrong [and] self-evaluate to see what they can do differently. It’s about learning where you’re successful and building on that.”

2. List it out

A lot of stress can come from feeling like life is chaotic or disorganized.

Jocelyn Gollner, a student at Douglas College, likes to keep track of her tasks through lists, as a way to keep her priorities in order. “When I was always stressed, I tried to do time management lists. Tons of lists made me feel a bit better. Otherwise [the tasks] just stayed in my head and made me freak out.”

By making lists, you can write out all of your responsibilities and break them into smaller tasks that need to be accomplished. This way, all of the things you have to do won’t seem so big and overwhelming. It will be easier to pace yourself so you can take all your responsibilities one step at a time.

While some people prefer the good old-fashioned pen and paper list (nothing’s more satisfying than crossing off a task once you’ve completed it), there are plenty of list apps you can get on your smart phone, such as Any.Do, AnyList, Do It (Tomorrow), or Remember The Milk. If you have a gmail account, there’s also a tasks feature that you can use to your advantage.

Task lists and schedules can also lessen your chances of procrastinating. Procrastination seems like the temporary solution to our stress, but we all know that it is the cause of even more stress in the end!

Patricia, a student at Western University, experienced what many collegiettes do every semester: “I was feeling really lazy and unmotivated, so I pretty much didn't do any of my readings and procrastinated on all of my assignments,” says Patricia. “Then essay deadlines started coming and exams started happening, and that's when I started to get really stressed out and did a whole bunch of cramming and last minute stuff.”

Learning from her past experience, she has decided to plan her time better this semester, using a detailed schedule to keep her on track.

“I'm going to try to manage my time better and get into a better sleeping routine. Something that I've done is I made a weekly schedule for myself with all my classes and other commitments, and with times that I have for [spiritual] devotions, gym and studying. Hopefully that will go well and I'll be able to stick to it.”

Don’t forget to add breaks into your schedule! For example, you can plan to reward yourself with a half hour of TV for every five tasks you cross off your list (check out tip #5 for more on breaks).

3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle

The thought of scheduling a gym session might not sound as appealing as scheduling weekly bar nights, but it might save you a load of stress in the end. Exercise is important not just for your physical health, but also for your mental health because it releases endorphins, which are hormones that can help reduce stress.

“When I’m working with students, I tell them that [exercise is] the thing you do not want to compromise on,” says Vincent. “We know moderate exercise can be very effective with depression so it should be the last thing, if you can, that should go.”

Although it might sound like the responsibility of going to the gym and scheduling a routine workout might add more stress, Michelle Lewis, HC's Senior Editor and UNC-Chapel Hill alum, found out that it actually does the opposite for her.

“I used to think that I never had enough time to exercise with my full course load and extracurriculars, and that trying to make time for the gym would stress me out more. However, I started going more often during the semester and it was actually a huge stress reliever,” she says.

“If you make it a regular part of your schedule (for example, I always went straight to the gym after my last Monday/Wednesday class) then you won't stress about using that time to not study, since it'll feel like part of your class schedule.”

In addition to regular exercise, work on keeping a fairly healthy diet. Because we tend to overeat or not eat enough when we are stressed, Vincent suggests paying close attention to your eating habits during stressful times. “It’s being able to notice that you’ve slipped into your bad habits again and doing something different.”

When you notice that you’ve started taking on negative habits, start to make a change, no matter how small, to slowly get back on track (whether it’s cutting down on alcohol or drinking more water).

“It’s stopping that downward slide. Because [when] you do more of the negative health things, your negative coping mechanisms, it’s like the snowball going downhill,” says Vincent.

4. Meditate (or do breathing exercises)

A big cause of stress and anxiety is worrying about the future. Will I have enough time to study for the test? Will I pass this class? Sometimes we need to let go of our worries and just live in the present. Nafisa Masud, a collegiette from the University of Utah, does yoga to get her through the stress of the semester. It helps her live in the moment and focus on her body and mind.

“I was always drawn to the Eastern philosophy behind yogic practice but what really kept me [going] was how much it helped me deal with stress,” says Nafisa, who is a certified yoga instructor. “By doing yoga I learned valuable exercises to control my breathing and relieve tension in my body, but I also learned how to live in the present moment and appreciate life's journey.”

Check to see if there are any yoga classes offered at your campus gym. If you don’t have enough money or prefer to do yoga in your own room, check out some yoga instruction clips on Youtube.

Because the Youtube clips are short, you can even do them during your study breaks. “There’s quite a bit on youtube. There’s little mp3 downloads on relaxation and guided meditation and guided imagery,” Vincent suggests. “They don’t have to be long. It’s whatever settles your system.”

5. Take a break, relax, and have fun

Although it might seem like a good idea to cram in all your work into one straight study session so that you can get on with other things, it is important to take breaks so that you don’t wear yourself out. Plan regular breaks to reward yourself for your hard work.

“Allocating time to yourself, even just a short half hour or hour to watch TV, go for coffee with a friend or go for dinner with your boyfriend makes all the difference,” says Lauren Hudson, a collegiette at University of Exeter. “Once I realized that I wasn't working all day, every day and getting stressed about it, my stress levels fell so quickly! It gives you something to look forward to every day and you can fill it exactly how you want to.”

Breaks are also helpful when writer’s block comes to visit. Getting stuck at a certain point can cause a lot of stress in the moment. Giving your brain a rest might help you see your work from a different perspective when you get back to it.

6. Admit when you’re taking on too much and cut down on your responsibilities

As much as we all want to be Super Collegiette, don’t forget that we’re all human. Ambition is admirable, but if you’re not eating or sleeping enough or if the stress is putting a strain on your relationships, you need to ask yourself if you’re overdoing it. If the answer is yes, you need to figure out what responsibilities to cut out.

Last year, Roxy*, a student at British Columbia Institute of Technology, was so busy that she did not have enough hours in the day to eat or sleep. It wasn’t until she experienced hallucinations from a lack of sleep that she realized she had too much on her plate.

“I had a mental breakdown last semester because of how stressed I was and all that was going on. Basically I just cut back on the workload. I started taking less classes and I'm so much happier now. I thought that by taking a lot of classes I'd finish sooner, but in the end it didn't even matter because I was so miserable,” says Roxy.

“Now it's going to take me a little longer to finish, but I'm actually enjoying myself and I'm so happy with life. Why should you put yourself in such a miserable situation when you really don't have to be? It seemed to be the best thing I could have done.”

Taking fewer classes or cutting down on work is not always an easy choice, and neither is cutting down on extracurriculars, which is what Michelle from UNC-Chapel Hill had to do.

“The fall of my junior year, I was involved in WAY too many extracurricular activities and constantly ran on little sleep and caffeine. I was always so stressed out, but I didn't want to give up any of my activities because I liked them all,” says Michelle.

It wasn’t until she studied abroad in France, where she had no extracurricular activities, that she realized how important it is to have free time and relax. “When I came back to UNC for my senior year, I dropped about half of my extracurricular activities and focused on the ones that I really loved. I've never been happier (or more stress-free!).”

But how do you know when you’re taking on too much? According to Vincent, this is the rule of thumb: “For every hour of class time, you need two hours for study and travel. So if you have 12 hours of class time a week, that means 24 hours for study and travel. So then if you add work on and then you add your private life and your social life and your family and eating and sleeping, there’s not much left over. So [do] whatever you can do to pare your life down.”

7. Plan study dates with friends who are experiencing the same thing

Every collegiette is bound to get stressed at certain times during the semester. It helps to know that there are other people going through the same thing who can help you take your mind off of the stress, but still keep you on track at the same time.

“A lot of times it helps me to get out and study with someone… that way it doesn't feel like you're the only one in the universe who is working on a Saturday morning,” says Andi*, a student at Trinity Western University. “The key is finding people who you will actually study with and not talk to the entire time.”

8. Realize when it’s not worth it to worry

Sometimes we create unnecessary stress by being too hard on ourselves. Hillary Coombs, a collegiette from Bryant University, realized one of the things she needed to stop worrying about was her already-good grades after she had two seizures and a 17 day migraine (as a direct result of being too stressed). “Usually high stressed people tend to freak out about anything less than an A. If you are in the A range, RELAX. You probably have plenty of back up on your resume to support your good grades — they don’t have to be perfect.”

9. Surround yourself with good people

The company you keep can add to or decrease your stress. Hillary became aware of this and decided to cut some people out of her life. “Only surround yourself with people who support you. It can be extremely difficult to unwind if you are surrounded by bad friends who talk behind your back [or] a boyfriend who constantly demands more time.”

It might not be easy to do but if there are people who increase your stress levels, at least try to spend less time with them and surround yourself with those who help you alleviate stress.

Every semester is sure to have its stressful points, so be aware of when those times might be and plan around them. Developing some of these habits and being mentally prepared will give you an edge to beat the stress.

7 Colleges You Should Follow on Pinterest

The Internet can be extremely overwhelming when you’re researching colleges. Lucky for you, Pinterest can show you a university’s traditions, student activities and pictures that you can’t always acquire from a Google search. So take a break from fancy nail art ideas and delicious dessert recipes and use Pinterest to help you with your college search! These seven universities have established great Pinterest pages (listed in no particular order) that are definitely worth checking out.

1. University of Michigan

Loaded with eye-catching university statistics (#12 of the world's top 100 universities forproducing millionaires?!), beautiful pictures and information on the school’s most popular majors, the University of Michigan’s Pinterest board does a great job displaying need-to-know facts about the school.

In addition to the informational boards, there are super fun sections that show how much school pride the student body has (go Wolverines!). The Student Life board shows everything from students walking through the snow to a Harry-Potter-themed dinner on the North Quad. And the adorable Future Wolverines board full of babies dressed in Michigan apparel? Probably the cutest thing we’ve ever seen.

2. Indiana University

As if their huge follower count didn’t give it away already, Indiana University definitely knows how to use Pinterest! This page has 14 boards that focus heavily on student life, including a board that keeps current students and prospective pupils updated on school events. One especially cool board on IU’s Pinterest page is its IU Around the World board, which shows IU students all over the globe sporting their school apparel. Talk about school spirit!

3. Texas A&M University

Within the first few seconds of looking at Texas A&M’s page, you get an overwhelming sense of school pride. Their description even says, “We are the Aggies, the Aggies are We! Gig’em!” Almost every board includes “Aggie” in the title (in case you were as confused as we were, “Aggie” is the university’s fun name for a Texas A&M student). This Pinterest account strays away from basic information and focuses on the fun aspects of the university. It features boards on Aggie wedding planning, Aggie pets, Aggie tailgates and Aggie traditions.

4. University of Mississippi

Like Texas A&M, Ole Miss’s page focuses mostly on the more unique attributes of the school rather than information. Boards include Tailgating Treats, a fun board of recipes to enhance your tailgate experiences, and Ole Miss at Home, featuring ways to decorate your home Ole-Miss-style, with everything from aprons to iPhone cases.

The University of Mississippi’s page is unique because it includes boards not just for Ole Miss students, but also for college kids in general. Dorm decorating tips, a holiday gift guide and the Just for Laughs section are a few good boards that are perfect for any collegiette, and sections like Happy Fall, Y’all and Southern Sayings appeal to the southern collegiettes at Ole Miss.

5. Drake University

If you didn’t know about Drake before, its Pinterest page will show you all of the ins and outs of the university (and adorable bull dog pictures!). Besides pictures of the Drake mascot, the school posts tons of pictures of the campus and study abroad programs. There are also fun recipes in case you run out of “Bulldog Bucks.” Drake does a great job of keeping students and non-students alike well informed about every aspect of the university. The Pinterest even has a board called Well said, which includes motivational quotes.

6. Dickinson College

This Pinterest page has boards specifically geared towards events and happenings within the school, but it also has boards that are helpful to college students everywhere. One especially notable board, Dickinson Love Stories, features relationships that blossomed (and lasted!) at Dickinson (what collegiette doesn’t enjoy a good love story?). Dickinson’s Pinterest account also includes unique tips for all things relating to college life, like how to battle a cold during flu season. This Pinterest account is perfect for anyone who wants more information about Dickinson or just general college life advice!

7. Oberlin College

Oberlin’s curriculum is a unique blend of arts, sciences and music, and its Pinterest page is no different. Obie Creations is a board demonstrating the creativity of the university, ranging from art done throughout the years to video clips of performances. Oberlin’s boards help you learn all about the surrounding town (including beautiful pictures of all four seasons!), events and student life. Looking for something a little funky? The OberStyle section is great for prospective students who want insight on how Oberlin kids dress!

While many universities are on Pinterest, these seven do an excellent job showing off their campuses and traditions. Next time you’re spending some surfing the Internet for college information, check out these pages! Even if you don’t want to go to these schools, you’ll still find adorable pictures of mascots. It’s a win-win!

7 Ways to Wear Leopard Print

If you’ve been hoping to spice up your style, why not incorporate one of the trendiest prints in fashion into your wardrobe? Whether you’re an animal-print newbie or a loyal leopard-print enthusiast, this article will give you some new ideas to try.

To learn more about how to work with leopard print, we turned to Colin McDonald, a fashion consultant and the blogger behind Style Source, a style blog that emphasizes the importance of image and confidence in creating your personal style. Being bold with fashion is a fun way to show off your personality, and leopard print is a really chic way to take that next step.

For the Beginners:

Start With a Scarf

Clockwise from top left:

Basic Leopard Infinity Scarf, Windsor, $12.90

White Leopard Print Infinity Scarf, Windsor, $12.90

Scrunchy Leopard Scarf, 2b, $10

Safari Infinity Scarf, DailyLook, $14.99

If you’re new to or unsure about wearing leopard print, start small! “I suggest testing the trend out with a scarf or pair of flats first,” McDonald says. “Then, if you really like it, splurge on a bag or jacket.”

Since winter isn’t usually a time for bright colors, incorporating a pop of this bold print in a scarf will help make your outfit stand out in a crowd of neutrals.

“Whether around my neck, in my hair or tied to my purse, scarves are definitely one of my favorite ways to wear leopard print,” says Michelle Pieklo, a junior at Messiah College, saying that the print adds some personality to her wardrobe.

Once you’ve picked out your favorite leopard-print scarf, you can pair it with burgundy or white pants and a neutral top. You can also try pairing it with a cozy sweater dress in a neutral color for the perfect fashionable yet comfy outfit.

If you own a chambray shirt, try wearing it with red pants and a leopard-print scarf to stay comfortable and fashionable.

Paint the Town Leopard

A very basic way to wear leopard print is to bedazzle your fingertips with the stylish print! The ways in which you can incorporate leopard print into your nail art are endless.

Try painting your nails red or a neutral color with a leopard-print accent nail. For a more daring look, try the opposite by painting all of your nails with a leopard-print design, and then adding a red or neutral accent nail. You can also mix it up by adding colors to your leopard-print design, such as blue, purple or pink.

To create your own leopard-print nail art, start off by painting your nails with a base color of your choice. Then, paint irregularly shaped blobs onto your nails in various sizes. Remember that the smaller the blob, the more detailed your design will have to be. After creating the blobs, paint “U” and “C” shapes around the blobs with a darker color, and fill in the empty spaces with little dots and lines in your darker color.

For an easier way to have leopard-print nails, try the Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in “Kitty, Kitty” for no-fuss nail art.

Mix it With Neutrals

Dress: Topshop, $40

Shoes: Charlotte Russe, $32.50

Belt: Dorothy Perkins, $9

Even though there are a variety of different colors you can wear with leopard print, pairing the print with basic tones works well for leopard newbies. McDonald loves “leopard paired with neutral colors or hues like black, white and khaki,” which will ensure your look stays elegant and chic.

To do this, try wearing a top that has small accents of leopard print in it, such as on a pocket or on the sleeves, with a tan skirt or another neutral bottom. You can also wear a fully neutral outfit with a touch of leopard print somewhere, whether it’s with a belt, a necklace or a clutch.

For the Adventurous Experts:

Pair Leopard With Red

Dress: MANGO, $21

Shoes: Charlotte Russe, $32.50

Clutch:Charlotte Russe, $18.50

When you rock this timeless, chic duo, you’ll be sure to turn heads across campus. Red is a warm color, which McDonald says works best with leopard print. Since both red and leopard print are both bold statement-makers, they’re hard to beat when combined.

One way to combine red and leopard print is to sport a fitted red dress with a pair of leopard-print flats or heels for a flawless going-out look. If you want to let the print take center stage, you can reverse this idea by rocking a leopard-print dress with red heels and red lipstick—instant bombshell! A leopard-print top combined with red pants or shorts and neutral shoes also works for the days when you want to stay a bit more casual.

Try Leopard Pants

For the brave collegiette looking to take her style to the next level, go for a more extreme look with leopard-print pants such as these from Forever 21 ($14.80). Since such a large part of your outfit will be dominated by the print, keep the rest of your look simple with neutral colors and gold accessories.

One idea is to wear a loose black top with a simple gold necklace in combination with classic leopard-print pants. If you opt for a pair of colored leopard-print pants, such as ones that include the print but are red or gray, stick with a white top and minimal accessories.

Combine Leopard With Other Prints

If you’re feeling bold and ready to experiment, try combining leopard print with a different on-trend print. McDonald recommends pairing leopard print with polka dots, which looks stylish and well put-together.

After you’ve tried that combination, mix it up with other unique patterns to see what works best with the prints you already own. Some other patterns that work well are floral or chevron designs. Prints that may not work as well are other animal prints, such as zebra or giraffe print, since too much animal print in one outfit can be overwhelming. Color plays into these decisions as well; the colors of your complementing patterns shouldn’t clash too much with the leopard print.

Rock a Bold Blazer

Animal Cheetah Stretch Blazer, Tibi, $168

Tired of the traditional black or neutral-toned blazer? Switch it up with a fitted, leopard-print blazer. The looks you can create with this type of blazer will be sharp and defined.

You can pair this piece with your favorite little black dress and a touch of red for girls’ night out. You can also try it with a fitted white blouse and denim or red pants for a look that is still stylish, but a little more casual.

No matter which look you try, try not to go overboard with multiple leopard-print pieces.

“Don't overdo it!” McDonald says. “Accessorize with just one piece throughout your entire look. You don't need a leopard bag with leopard shoes, a scarf and a belt. Think just a pop of leopard. It is a bold print, so have fun with it!”

With so many different ideas to try, you’re sure to become a leopard-print lover in no time Which one are you most looking forward to trying? Sound off in the comments below!

"What's In My Makeup Bag?" - Jen Morgan

$

The collegiettes that contribute to The Beauty School blog for Her Campus are all about hair, makeup and beauty. Since it’s always exciting to get the inside scoop about their favorite products, styles and routines, sneaking a peek inside of their makeup bags can reveal firsthand what products they use to look fabulous and beautiful. All products shown are personal favorites selected by the specific girl of the week, and all opinions expressed are 100% their own.

Hi, collegiettes! I’m Jen Morgan, and this week I’m going to show off my favorite makeup to you. These products are ones that I’ve tried on my own, and some were recommended by some of my closest friends.

Since my entire makeup collection looks like this:

I’ll only be showing you a few of my favorite products, since to show off and explain everything in my makeup box would take forver (read: days). I use all sorts of extra products besides just eye shadow and lipstick, like blush, bronzer, highlighter, brow pencils, and many others, but to save time I’ll be showing my favorite products for basic makeup staples.

Primers:

I especially recommend using a primer before applying foundation so that you don’t sweat it off, and eye shadow primer to prevent creasing. You can also use a primer on your lips before applying lipstick too, which keeps your lipstick from feathering and drying out.

The primer that I use before foundation is called “Spackle” from Laura Geller. It’s super lightweight and feels very smooth when you apply it. Remember that a little goes a long way, so you only need a small pump to get the job done.

For my eyes and lips, I use the Shadow Insurance and Lip Insurance primers from Too Faced Cosmetics. I love their primers, since they work well with the oily skin on my eyelids and the dry skin on my lips. Once again, a little goes a long way, so there’s no need to go overboard with primer.

Foundation:

Currently, I use Almay’s Wake-Up Foundation in the shade Naked (#030). I just bought this foundation a few weeks ago, so I’m still getting used to it, but it’s the perfect shade for my winter skin tone. Last spring and summer, I was using Revlon’s Color Stay foundation, and I liked that foundation a lot. As for this one, it applies fairly well, but I find that I need a lot more product in order to get the coverage that I need. Other than that, it looks very natural and doesn’t feel caked-on at all; it really allows your skin to breathe.

Lips:

Lipsticks

My two favorite lipsticks are both from MAC Cosmetics. My favorite nude is called Fanfare, and my favorite red is called Ruby Woo. Fanfare is almost a pinky-nude shade that has a crème sheen finish, while Ruby Woo is a true red with a matte finish. Both apply very evenly and last a long time.

Lip Stain

If I had to choose one cosmetic to use for the rest of my life, I’d choose this product. I even lost my summer tube shortly after arriving on campus for the fall semester, and even though it costs $26 I bought it again; it's that good, and one tube lasts a long time. It’s from Makeup Forever Cosmetics, and it’s called Aqua Rouge Liquid Lip Color. My favorite shade is called Raspberry (#10), which is a deep raspberry-toned red. It applies like a gloss, but dries instantly to your lips to form a stain. Then, you apply a clear gloss afterwards to seal in the color. Many lip stains rely on the clear gloss to seal in the color, yet this product barely needs it. It literally stays on all-day, despite eating and drinking, and requires a strong makeup remover to get off. It won’t get on your teeth, and it doesn’t dry out your lips.

Eyes:

Shadows

My brand new favorite eye shadow palette is the Naked 3 palette from Urban Decay. This is my first Naked palette, since I didn’t want to fork over the cash for the first two. My mom surprised me with the third one over Christmas break, and I’ve fallen in love. I usually only use neutral eye shadows, so this one works perfectly for me. It’s a set of 12 rose-hued neutrals, and the colors are highly pigmented, which makes them super easy to work with. It’s definitely worth your money, and I use it almost daily.

My favorite neutral palette from the drugstore is the Walking on Eggshells palette from Wet N Wild. The colors include a guide that tells you where to apply each, so it’s easy to learn how to apply them properly. It’s easy to take on-the-go and the colors usually last all day long when used with a primer.

Liners

For a sleek cat eye or the days in which I only want to apply liner on the upper rims of my lids, I use the Skinny Mini Liquid Eyeliner in Black from Eyeko. It has a marker-like application tip that helps you to draw clean and concise lines. The formula and the color stay vivid throughout the day without smudges.

For pencil liner, I use the Extreme Black liner from Victoria’s Secret. The formula is also long-lasting and is easy to apply.

Mascara

My eyes are extremely sensitive, so I’m very picky with my mascara. One of the only mascaras that I have found that works well without irritating my eyes is the Organic Wear mascara from Physicians Formula. I specifically like the one that I’ve pictured (in the bright green tube), since I’ve also tried the one in the nude and pink tubes and didn’t see the same results. It makes your lashes extremely long without clumps (yes, seriously).

Concealer:

My favorite under eye concealer is the Fake Up concealer from Benefit cosmetics. The size pictured is a sample size that I received from Birchbox, and it’s fabulous. Simply swipe the product under your eyes and pat in with your ring finger to cover up dark circles and other eye concerns.

This is a concealer palette I read about in Seventeen Magazine several years back, but only bought it about a year ago and I’m really pleased with the results. It contains a green concealer base, which you apply to your pimple with a concealer brush first to cancel out the redness. Then, there are two color concealers (one light and one dark), so you choose the one that works better with your skin tone and apply it with your brush. Finally, there is a powder that you apply over everything to seal in the makeup and help it to look more natural.

Finishing Powder:

Instead of using a makeup setting spray, I prefer to use a powder. My favorite is the HD Powder from Makeup Forever. This helps to perfect your skin after applying foundation, and helps to seal in the product to make it last all day long. It feels light on your skin, and will not change the tone of your foundation.

Stayed tuned for our next “What’s In My Makeup Bag” post! In the meantime, what are your favorite products? Sound off in the comments below!

Breakfast

For breakfast yesterday, I had oatmeal with banana and almond butter. Classic. I had an internship interview yesterday afternoon, so I needed my comforting bowl of oatmeal to get my day started on the right note.

Lunch

For lunch, I wanted something that would fuel me through the interview without causing me any digestive issues (or bad breath, or anything stuck in my teeth, or any of the other 100 things I worried about). So, I opted for a smoothie since I've been on something of a smoothie kick since my housemate invested in the Vitamix. I blended together Greek yogurt, frozen mixed berries, almond milk and honey and then stirred in two tablespoons of chia seeds. Berry good.

Dinner

For dinner, I had a feast. To de-stress after a very stressful day, I went out to dinner with some friends at Aventura, a new, Spanish-inspired, tapas-style restaurant in Ann Arbor. We pretended we were abroad and then ate ourselves into a food coma. Tapas are the best because you get to have a little taste of everything-so many flavors! We got a cheese sampler platter; a flatbread ("coca") with fried egg, arugula, Manchego cheese and chorizo; mini lamb burger sliders with Manchego cheese on brioche buns (YUM); some sort of potato dish ("patatas bravas") drenched in an amazing sauce; dates wrapped in bacon; and a grilled shrimp dish. My favorite was probably the potato dish or the lamb burgers. Manchego cheese is unreal; I need more of it in my life.

By the end of the meal, we were stuffed but still managed to make room for dessert like real champions. We split a chocolate tart, which was incredibly dense and delicious. I'd be lying if I said I didn't unbutton my jeans by the end of the meal. After eating very healthily for the past two weeks and stressing about this interview, it felt good to just relax with friends and indulge in a big, tasty, cheesy and chocolatey meal. My friends and I were actually talking at dinner about how you have to give up your healthy habits every so often to keep yourself sane and live your life. Balance is always the key! But like everything, finding balance is easier said than done. Even more important than finding balance may be finding a slice of Manchego cheese, though-you have my word that it will change your life for the better.

Just when we thought J Biebs couldn’t make any bigger headlines, his latest misdemeanor has taken him to the big house.

Trouble-making pop star Justin Bieber was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license after he was caught drag racing on Thursday morning in Miami Beach. When he was caught, Bieber was driving his yellow Lamborghini in a race against a red Ferrari in a residential area, going 55 to 60 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.

According to Miami Beach Police Chief Rayond Martinez, Justin “made some statements that he had consumed some alcohol, and that he has been smoking marijuana and consumed some prescription medication.”

After a failed sobriety test, Justin was booked into a Miami jail. His racing partner, aspiring musician Khalil Amir Sharieff, was also arrested on a drunken driving charge.

Could this be the end of the Biebs, or do you still “Beliebe” he can redeem his career? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

HC's Guide to Safe Sexting

$
0
0

Technology has become a driving force in our everyday lives so it’s no surprise that we can now use it to spice up our sex lives, too. Do you have a new crush who you want to move things along with? Send a sext! Have you been hooking up with a guy but it’s getting stale? Send a sext! Have a long-distance boyfriend who you can’t see very often? Send a sext! The best part about sexting is that it’s fun for everyone, no matter what your relationship status is… that is, of course, as long as you do it right! We’ve all heard the horror stories of sexting gone wrong so Her Campus is here to give you the scoop on how to have safe sext!

Rule #1: Have Anonymous Sext

sexting text message flirting

Okay, okay so the title of this rule may go against everything you’ve ever been told about sex, but trust me this is the best way to keep sexting safe. If you are going to send pictures of yourself, keep them anonymous! “I like to send ‘slightly naked’ photos of myself to my boyfriend,” says Megan*. “Usually, it’s just a little cleavage or my butt barely peeking out from under one of his sweatshirts. It’s enough to get him excited without making me nervous about anyone accidentally seeing them.” A good rule of thumb to follow is this: if anyone close to you ended up seeing the picture, would they instantly know it was you? If a stranger saw it on the internet, would they recognize you if they saw you in person? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, then you’re not being anonymous enough! Remember, no pictures of your face; identifying features such as a mole, piece of jewelry, tattoo, piece of clothing, etc.; and no captions with the picture that mention anything personal!

Rule #2: Keep it PG-13

sexting

While sexting by definition is R-rated, there are ways to keep it PG-13. There are plenty of sexts to send that don’t cross the line: partially nude photos, artfully done pictures of parts of your body (artfully = strategically hiding your naughty bits!), flirtatious texts about your relationship (whatever that may be), and maybe even plans to meet up later without specific details, just implied intimacy. Sexting should be fun, but it can definitely damage your reputation if the guy decides he wants to show his friends. So that means no completely nude photos of yourself, no raunchy texts back and forth, and no promises about what you’re going to do to him later. If it’s something you would never want anyone else to see, not even a good friend, then you probably shouldn’t send it!

Rule #3: No Drunken Sexting

Alcohol has a tendency to impair your judgment in a major way – surprise, right? So although you knowthe cutie in your calculus class would love to receive a naughty text from you – and I’m sure he would – it’s probably not the best idea at 2 in the morning after a few too many vodka-tonics. Your best bet is to save the text you were planning to send as a draft, and then revisit it in the morning to decide if you’d still like to send it. Odds are you won’t still want to, but if you do then go for it… as long as it abides by our other rules!

Rule #4: It Should Be Mutual

It always seems to be the girl’s responsibility to turn a guy on, and that’s not fair! If you’re the one taking all of the risks with sexting without receiving anything in return, speak up or just stop giving it up. While it’s always nice to have a guy drooling over you, make sure that he’s not taking advantage of you by making him reciprocate. “My boyfriend used to just have me send pictures of myself, but he would never send anything back,” says Amy*. “I started to feel like a toy to him so I stopped doing it. Once he realized that it wasn’t fun for me anymore, he started to flirt back by sending sexts about how turned on he was, which led to more conversation.” You can flirtatiously let him know that he’s not being fair by saying “Aw, it’s no fair I never get anything from you…” or “Ok, now it’s your turn!” He will get the hint and if not, then stop sexting – he will find a way to get it started again.

Rule #5: Have Consensual Sext

Your reasons for sexting should always be your own, which means never let a guy pressure you into doing something you aren’t comfortable with, even if it’s not ‘sex’ as it’s typically defined. Sexting is just as intimate as the real thing so if you aren’t willing to send photos, talk dirty, or even just flirt via text, then don’t! There is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting to be intimate in person. Technology can be intimidating, and it’s your prerogative to sext or not to sext. If a guy is pressuring you for a sext, let him know in a cute way that it’s not going to happen by saying something like, “I’d rather talk about this in person…” or “Maybe we can make that happen later tonight.” If he still tries to push you, then make it a little more clear: “I don’t feel comfortable sexting – I prefer physical contact ;)” He’ll get the hint, but it won’t push him away.

So now that you have our rules for sexting, you’re probably wondering how to apply them. We’ve put together a few ways to safe sext whether you’re a beginner or advanced – there’s something for everyone!

  • Send photos that imply something more, such as a photo of your unmade bed or a picture of your lingerie drawer
  • The ‘…’ is your best friend: If you add dot dot dot to the end of any sentence, it makes it sound flirty no matter what. For example, “I can’t wait to see you later…”
  • If you want to get a guy excited, start by complimenting him on something he did the last time you two hooked up. You can make this as tame or as naughty as you want. For example, “I can’t believe what an amazing kisser you are…” or “Last night was so amazing”
  • Take Megan’s advice and send ‘slightly naked photos’, such as a picture of your cleavage, your butt in a pair of jeans, your legs in high heels, etc.

sexting

The true key to safe sexting is to stay within your comfort zone. Trust your instincts – if you aren’t sure you can trust him with a photo of yourself, then don’t send one. If you aren’t sure how he will respond to a sext from you, then the two of you probably aren’t at that level yet. Sexting, just like physical sex, will always be the best if you feel safe, comfortable, and protected. Have fun!

How to Find Love While Studying Abroad

$
0
0

Ever since Lizzie McGuire hopped onto the back of Paolo’s Vespa, we’ve all thought about how great it would be to travel abroad, romance a handsome stranger who has an adorable accent and spend a few weeks exploring another country with our dreamy, foreign fling. Studying abroad is all about exploring new places, trying new things and being spontaneous, so this could be the perfect time to have a casual fling with a hottie who can show you the ropes to this new, foreign lifestyle of yours.

If you’re studying abroad, the prospect of finding love can sound more appealing than ever. The only problem is, you may not know where to look for it. Whether you’re looking for a nonchalant fling or even a serious boyfriend while you’re studying abroad, here’s a little advice for how to make it happen!

Looking for a Casual Fling?

Whether you’re planning on studying abroad for a few weeks or a few months, it’s inevitable that you’re going to have to go home eventually. That’s why sometimes it’s better to keep your study-abroad romance more on the casual side. This guy won’t be the kind of guy who’s going to introduce you to his parents, but you’ll definitely want to take lots of pictures with him to show off to your friends back home!

“I was studying abroad in Florence, Italy, this past semester and ended up hanging out with this one guy I met at a bar almost the entire time I was there,” says Katie*, a junior at University of San Diego. “I told him upfront that I was only going to be there for a few months, so we decided to keep it super casual and I ended up having a really great time with him! I knew there were no strings attached and I would be leaving soon anyways, so I didn’t feel any pressure to make it work or impress him.”

Hanging out at local bars and clubs is a great way to meet cute local guys. Just make sure he’s not a skeezy local before you decide to make a move and put your flirting skills to the test.

“I would say that most of the locals know where the American college students like to hang out, so they’ll go there to pick up girls,” Katie says. “They know what they’re doing! They’ve done it before. You just have to be okay with the fact that you might not be their first American fling.”

Studying abroad is all about exploring new things and being a little bold, so don’t shy away if a dreamy Italian man asks you to dance or the hot guy from Madrid offers to buy you a drink. One of the most important things about studying abroad is seizing every opportunity that’s thrown your way, and we definitely consider a good-looking guy with a cute accent a worthy opportunity! Just make sure you’re being safe; if a guy is really giving you the creeps, don’t ignore your instincts, and don’t accept a drink you didn’t see the bartender make.

Don’t be afraid to approach a guy and start a conversation or invite someone to dance with you either. Men in other countries are often much more forward when it comes to romancing a pretty lady. While not every suave foreigner you meet will be looking for a lifelong romance, don’t let that stop you. When you keep things casual, you won’t have to deal with painful goodbyes or lingering feelings once you’re back in America. You get a few weeks of carefree fun before it’s time to head back home. No strings attached!

Looking for Real Romance?

Whether you’re under the Eiffel Tower, admiring the coasts of Greece or salsa dancing in Spain, you can’t help but let the beauty of your surroundings make you feel all lovey-dovey inside. And while the nightlife is one of the best parts about studying abroad, you’ll have a much better chance at a lasting romance if you meet a guy in a more casual setting. Maybe you’ll meet your dream guy at the café around the corner, or maybe he’s waiting for you at the local museum. Exploring the city around you may just lead to you running into someone who could be your next great love.

Taylor, a senior at the University of San Diego, may not have found the love she was looking for while studying abroad in Italy, but her best friend sure did!

“My best friend Lindsay* and I were studying abroad in Italy, and the first week we were there, she met this guy while we were exploring Venice,” she says. “We were sitting in a little café reading and he came up and asked her about the book she was holding. I felt like we were in a movie. I was surprised they hit it off so fast, but even more surprised when she told me she was in love with him after the third week of knowing him! I thought she was crazy and that it would fade once we got back home, but it’s been over a year now and they’re still dating!”

There’s no one place you should go when looking for a real romance. The guy of your dreams could be anywhere; you just have to keep an open mind! He could be a street artist in Paris or a waiter at the restaurant you and your friends go to, or you could meet him right after you throw that lucky penny into the Trevi Fountain. When you truly immerse yourself in the culture and make an effort to talk to the people around you, you’re bound to meet at least one worthy love connection.

Learning a little bit of the native language may help you in your endeavors to find your foreign fairy tale as well. If you can converse with the natives in their language, they’ll appreciate it. A language barrier can really hinder a budding romance, so make an effort to learn at least a few words and phrases before you embark on your study-abroad adventure. This could be the perfect excuse to put those years of high school Spanish, French or Italian to the test. Make sure you at least know the word amore!

While finding your one true love in another country sounds super romantic, it’s also important to remember that long-distance relationships can be hard. Before you commit to your super cute Italian/Spanish/Australian/Irish boyfriend, make sure you’ll be willing to put in the effort to make it work once you get back home.

Don’t Overlook the Cute American!

While you may be stuck in the mindset that your study-abroad fling is going to speak a different language and show you around his city, it’s important to remember that there will be tons of other college guys studying abroad with you, too. The best part is, they’ll get to go back to the States with you when your semester comes to an end!

“I think when you’re studying abroad with other guys from your school, it’s not as big of a deal if you hook up,” Katie says. “Since you’re in another country, you’re a little more carefree and you kind of feel like the rules don’t apply. What happened in Italy stayed in Italy!”

Whether he goes to your school or not, nothing will make you guys bond like attempting to read foreign maps, trying new foods or getting lost in the city. Plus, you won’t have to worry about any language barriers with this guy.

Another plus to dating an American in a foreign country is that they’ll be just as stoked as you are to see all the sites. Your American fling will be just as excited as you are to put a lock on the love bridge in Paris or take pictures pretending to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

“I was on a tour in Rome while I was studying abroad and met this really cute guy in my tour group,” says Natalie, a junior at Seattle University. “We really hit it off and I found out that he goes to University of Washington, which is really close to my school! I think everyone hopes to go to another country and meet some hot foreign guy—I know I did—but I never expected to fall for an American while I was in Rome. I guess it’s kind of ironic that I had to go to another country to meet him!”

Don’t be shy if you meet a cute American who you’d like to get to know better. The fact that you’re both immersed in a new culture is the perfect excuse to bond and a great opportunity to invite him to explore the city with you. Invite him to try the cute pizza joint around the corner that everyone has been raving about or to check out a local art gallery with you.

Moral of the story: if you can’t find the Paolo to your Lizzie McGuire, then you can always go searching for Gordo!

Whether you’re looking for a lasting romance or a short-lived fling, a study-abroad romance could be the perfect addition to your foreign adventure. He may be the guy of your dreams or he could just be just a fun story to tell your friends about later––either way, we hope you find a little amour wherever you study abroad!

How To Narrow Down Your List Of Colleges During Senior Year

$
0
0

If you're lucky enough to hold a pile of acceptance letters in your hand, congrats! Each college can bring thrilling opportunities and prepare you for your future, but there's just one problem... you can only pick one. Maybe you have a clear front-runner and the decision to enroll couldn't be easier. But maybe you, like so many other pre-collegiettes, are stuck between two, three, or even more schools. Here's how to narrow down your list to find your future home.

1. Visit!

You might have grown up dreaming about attending your mom's alma mater, but what happens when you visit campus for the first time and hate it? Alternatively, a school that seemed totally blah on paper might end up feeling like home. That's why college tours are so important – they can completely change the way you view a school, knock it off your list, or solidify it as your top choice.

Try to schedule visits on regular class days (as opposed to weekends or during exam periods) and make sure to ask tons of questions while on campus. When you're stuck between just two or three choices, a visit might make all the difference in your decision. Check out our list of seven factors to pay attention to on college tours.

If you can't visit, try the next best thing: HC's Complete College Guide. With input from real students at more than 80 schools across the country, you can learn about academics, the social scene, housing, and more without leaving your living room.

2. Attend Accepted Students' Events

Some schools offer special events during the spring for accepted students. Whether it's a mixer at an alum's house or a big reception on campus, these events are designed for you to meet other Class of '18ers and decide if the school is the right fit for you.

At the event, take mental notes about how you fit in with the other prospective students. Maybe you stumble across your future soulmate and bond over an obsessive love of college basketball, or maybe you're itching to get away from the event and hang out with your normal friends. Either way, that reaction can help you narrow down your choices.

3. Look at the price tag

Once you've received your financial aid packages, sit down with whoever's paying for college to look over your options. If you love two schools equally, it may be worth opting for the in-state public school with the more manageable price tag instead of the $55k private school that will have you drowning in loans for years to come. But don't just stop the financial aid discussion after receiving your aid packages – you can often appeal financial aid packages to get a better price. Often times, schools will match what any other other school is offering you.

Even beyond the sticker price of a school, there are other factors to consider when paying for college. Look into work-study jobs and student loans. It's possible that the more expensive school might actually wind up saving you money over the cheaper school in the long run!

4. Consider your major

If you have a major or even a general field of study in mind, that can help narrow down your options enormously. Research the departments you're interested in at each school on your list and see how they stack up against each other. Does one school have a significantly better reputation for its business major than another school? (Talk to your guidance counselor or check out the message boards on College Confidential to compare schools.) Are you sure you want to major in English at a school that's geared towards science majors? Keep in mind that your desired major may change, but if you're seton majoring something pre-professional, like pre-med or pre-business, a school with a heavy liberal arts focus might not be your favorite choice. College should be first and foremost about academics – so consider them carefully before you make a decision!

5. Flip a coin

No one would ever tell you to pick a school based on something as silly as a coin toss. But flipping a coin can help reveal how you really feel about a decision. First, label each side of the coin. Let's say heads means you'll go to College A and tails means you'll go to College B. Flip the coin in the air and don't try to influence the outcome.

Let's say you get heads – College A. Are you disappointed? Relieved? Regardless of the outcome, you might get some insight into how you're really feeling. You might have a preference and not even realize it!

Still stuck? You have until May 1st to decide. Good luck with your decision!

Mikaela Mcshane: So Alex, I’m sure school and rugby keep you pretty busy. Do you have any other hobbies?

Alex Bluteau: I try to find time to get outside and be active, aside from rugby. I really enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, mountain biking and four wheeling. AB: I need a girl who will hold her own in a conversation - intelligence is extremely sexy, A good sense of humor is also absolutely essential. It’s very attractive to see a girl who respects herself enough to take care of her body.

Funny, buff, and charming -- he’s the perfect gentleman with a mischievous wit. No, this is not the new Disney prince, but rather this week’s Campus Cutie. This week’s dreamy Campus Cutie, Holden Hughley, is definitely someone you should get to know.

Favorite part of UNC: There is so much stuff that is so cool about Carolina. I can’t even pick one.

Best country: Germany

Favorite superhero: Batman

Biggest turn-offs: Girls who smoke. Just in general, people who chew with their mouths open. It really makes me angry. I can’t talk to those people.

Pirate vs. ninja: Pirates are really cool. I’d just take the scurvy and gold.

Best pick-up line: I had a really good anti-pick up line: “if I could rearrange the alphabet, I’d put your sister and I together.” But I’d never use that if I was trying to get with a girl.

Holden Hughley is far from normal, but that just might make all the difference in the world to some lucky lady. Say “hi” to this Campus Cutie if you see him around!

From Facebook Official to Single Status: The Online Manifestation of a Break-Up

Breaking up sucks. Taking down your Facebook relationship status and having people comment, “Ohemgee, why?? Call me!” is arguably even worse.  Your ex-relationship with your ex-boyfriend can turn into a grey area online. What do you do with all those photos of you two kissing right after he won his big game or all dressed up at your sorority formal? Do you stop following him on Twitter? You don’t want to be too dramatic, but at the same time, you really, really don’t want to see photos of him and that girl who was just his “friend” snuggling up at his frat party.

We here at HC are going to take you through all the specifics of a break-up online, step-by-step so that you can be prepared to handle the situation like the cool, calm, and collected collegiette that you are.

Updating your relationship status

Whether you had “in a relationship” or nothing there at all, switching to single can get pretty public, especially in your timeline, where top moments are literally magnified on the page (so unnecessary). If you’re thinking about changing your status to “single” but don’t want all the attention (like that creep who’s been stalking you since freshman year commenting, “So, coffee sometime?”) you basically have two options: you can either change your status at a time when you know traffic to Facebook is low (like the wee hours of the morning) or you can simply hide the news from your timeline. When you’re trying to move on, it’s usually a good idea not to have your break-up be the talk of Facebook town. It will only perpetuate the sadness or anger you feel about the end of your relationship.

Posting statuses and tweets

I’m staging a Kanye intervention (#immalety’allfinishbut…). Typically, status updates or tweets—from cryptic to blatantly obvious—about your break-up or your ex are not a good look for you. They stir up and perpetuate all the negative attention from the break-up, which, if you ask us, doesn’t make that cutie who has had his eye on you since freshman year want to approach you. While it’s hard to keep things completely private when you’re on Facebook or Twitter, there are ways to limit the dirty details. Those Kelly Clarkson song lyrics you just posted? Yeah, everyone knows you’re talking about him. Emotional outbursts? Reign them in. Here are a few examples of what you shouldn’t let slip online:

We are never, ever, ever getting back together.
And with a status like that, I’m sure that’s true.

Guess you were just collecting your jar of hearts.
Oh, gosh. Just stop.

LuVinG S1ngL3 Lyf3! #don’tmissyouatallJohn…
which is clearly why you’re still thinking about him? If you were really having so much fun, you wouldn’t have the time to even think about letting the entire world know.

Like this if you hate LIARS!
Come on, you’re better than that. Break-ups are rarely one-sided, so if you don’t want to be put on blast, don’t put him on blast. Online warfare is just not conducive to moving on.

So sad and lonely…can someone bring me marshmallows?
The flip side of avoiding the defiant or aggressive online updates is an announcement like this one. Is pity really the kind attention you want to draw to yourself? You’re totally allowed to feel sad, but it would have been better if you just texted your best friend to get you those marshmallows.

Now that you know what you shouldn’t do, what should you do?  We talked to some of our very own collegiettes for their take on how to deal with a break-up online.

Deleting and posting photos

“When my ex and I broke up, I deleted some profile pictures that had him in it and untagged some quasi-romantic pictures,” says Kelsey, Boston University ’14. “My mentality was that those pictures didn't reflect my current life, so why should I have them all over my wall.”

We’d say this is a good alternative to un-tagging all 400 pictures of the two of you together. Profile pictures and recent wall photos are game, but anything else can make it seem like you’re going on a bitter, broken-hearted rampage, even if that’s not your intention. Plus, who’s to say you won’t want those photos later? (Example, girls’ night in: “I can’t believe you were crying over him—look at this photo! You’re so much hotter!) There’s a way you can make certain albums or photos visible only to you—but if the temptation is too great to look at those photos and become nostalgic, untagging or deleting is definitely the way to go.

You may also be hesitant to post pictures of yourself in the party scene or with a new guy… will he think you’re trying show off? If that’s your concern, you can also make those photos private, but keep in mind he might be posting new pictures, too.  Whether breaking up was a mutual decision or not, you’re both free to do what you want without the other’s approval.

As for the photos you don’t have power over (like pictures of him with his arms around three different girls) it’s best if you keep your online distance: no liking or commenting. That rule applies even if he puts up a caption that’s meant to provoke you.  An online war is just not the way to go, and you need space and a clear head in order to move on.

Liking, comments, general online interaction

You don’t have to stop liking or commenting completely—but it is probably a good idea to put a little space between your profiles if you decide to stay friends.

“I had a bad break-up with my boyfriend freshman year and ever since, I've removed my relationship status from my profile (even though I've dated other people since),” says one collegiette, UNC ’13. “It made me realize how awkward it is when you break up with someone and it's announced to the world (plus people can leave comments on the break-up—even more awkward!). I didn't interact with him at all on Facebook for a month or so—no likes, no comments, no nothing--because it felt too weird since we didn't end things well, but I think he wrote on my wall first.”

Unfriending, deactivating or blocking your ex

Maria from Virginia State University ‘16 supports cutting your ex off online. “Usually I unfriend the person just because it helps me get over them,” Moses says. “Out of sight, out of mind.”

But Kelsey from BU disagrees. “[I] think there's something extremely catty about deleting your ex on Facebook,” she says. “Shortly after I posted pictures of a newly single me going out to parties with my friends, my ex deleted me on Facebook... and then proceeded to tweet about it.”

These three forms of cutting off your ex on Facebook can be seen as either dramatic or absolutely necessary. You should do what you need to in order to get over your ex—but keep a few things in mind:

Unfriending
Unfriending someone who you’ve gotten to be really close with can be painful for you.  However, if you’re worried about checking his profile too often, then this is probably the best option—just make sure that you know it’s not out of spite.

Deactivation
Your entire Facebook doesn’t revolve around him. Out of sight, out of mind is important, but leaving Facebook entirely? Don’t shut yourself off from the world because you had a break-up.  Facebook can be a great rebound tool!

Blocking
Unless your ex is hounding you down with aggressive messages, we’re not sure this is absolutely necessary.  After all, if you’re worried about checking his profile too often, this doesn’t exactly solve the problem because you can always un-block him. Self-restraint would be a better form of censorship. What you can do is hand over the keys of your Facebook to a trustworthy friend—have her change the password and keep you away for a few days.  This goes for Twitter as well. That way, you can avoid doing anything rash—like a status update or blocking your ex so you’re not tempted to Facebook stalk him—and have some you time to think about what to do next.

Moral to the story?  This was your relationship, not everyone else’s. Take some time for your emotions in private, so that you can handle your break-up online in the best way possible. Chin up, collegiettes!

We’d love to hear your input for how you deal with a break-up online—let us know in the comments below!
