8 Things You Should Never Do at Work

$

0

Transitioning from the back of your lecture hall to your new cubicle isn’t easy! Now that you’re spending most of your day in the same work space, it can be tempting to make yourself comfortable and let some of your professional habits slide. Keep in mind, though, that everything you do is associated with your professional competency. Your new boss will hold you to standards you may not be used to, and adjusting to what’s appropriate could prove to be tricky. As you navigate your new workplace, keep in mind these eight things you should avoid doing at your desk so you can make a good impression!

1. Sending unprofessional emails

Just as you would take the time to proofread a resume before sending it in, make sure your emails are spell-checked and free of any emojis or text abbreviations. Fix any grammar mistakes before hitting send!

Tamara Peters, a career development specialist at Rutgers University Career Services, emphasizes paying attention to your office’s culture and how the employees communicate.

“Watch how other staff members are addressing each other, signing off, and when they usually send emails to each other,” Peters says. “If they’re getting up from their desks and calling or talking to their colleagues, do the same.”

In terms of email structure, keep in mind that being concise is key. You don’t want your boss reading through a long introduction before getting to your real question! The subject line of the email should be as specific as possible so that your boss knows what the issue is as she scrolls through her messages. Include “Urgent:” or “Important:” in the subject if there’s an emergency you need your supervisor to address, but make sure to use it sparingly!

2. Accidentally copying and pasting something embarrassing

Multitasking online can be difficult! One wrong click can lead to embarrassing mistakes like putting personal information into a work document or clicking send before you’ve finished writing an email. Emily Miethner, founder of FindSpark, a career community for college students and grads, suggests creating different dashboards on Google Chrome. This will allow you to separate bookmarks, tabs and login information between work and personal accounts. If you have a Google account, it’s simple: Sign into Chrome, go to “Settings” on the toolbar and underneath “Users,” click “Add new user.”

“That way, there's less of a chance that you'll even go on a site that you shouldn't be on or log onto a personal profile,” Miethner says. “And seeing the different icons and bookmarks reminds you that you're at work.”

Preventing these problems is also as simple as not multitasking as much, which will result in better quality and proofreading.

3. Not keeping private information confidential

You’re usually expected to keep company projects confidential, so be careful of whom you share information with, especially online! Keep work emails separate from personal emails and organize them in folders so you always have written word to back you up in case there’s a miscommunication. While it’s unlikely that you’ll run into any serious trouble, you’ll still look professional and show that you take your job seriously.

Miethner recommends bringing up questions about confidentiality when you first get your job contract so you know exactly what is and isn’t appropriate to share with others.

“A lot of interns will have paperwork that includes an NDA, or non-disclosure agreement, but usually they’ll be very broad,” she says. “It’s good to have a conversation early on about exactly what’s confidential and what’s not.” Even if bringing up such a serious topic seems intimidating, Miethner says your boss will likely be impressed that you’re smart and responsible enough to be careful.

If information does get leaked, Miethner suggests going to your boss immediately and being completely honest about everything that was leaked, even if it’s a difficult mistake to admit. That way, those with the power to fix the situation can take the necessary steps as soon as possible so there’s less trouble for you down the road.

4. Being too casual with your boss

Having an easygoing boss is definitely better than dealing with a horrible one, but you can run the same risk of making a bad impression.

“Halfway through my internship, I was on a friendly basis with the editors I reported to and developed a relationship where we joked a lot,” says Lindsey, a formal editorial intern. “However, because I had fallen into that habit, when I later reported to a new editor for an assignment, I accidentally acted buddy-buddy with her before judging her communication style. She reported to my supervisor that I had been unprofessional, and I was so embarrassed that I had acted disrespectful.”

Never forget that you're at work, so make sure you address your boss by her preferred title. Pay special attention if she asks you to call her by her first name since it will show that you’re aware and good at adapting to what’s appropriate. If your boss likes to ask about your weekend, always have an interesting but appropriate story prepared so that you’re not caught off-guard. Miethner says everyone wants to connect, and finding good topics to talk about is a matter of being an active listener.

“It’s important to do more listening than talking at the beginning,” Miethner says. “Take a step back and listen to other people’s conversations to get an idea of what’s appropriate.”

5. Checking your social media accounts

Diana Martinez, a career coach in the tri-state area, says you should never be signed into a personal social media account when you’re on the job. While some marketing, media and entertainment companies are more lenient with their rules, Martinez recommends sticking by a personal rule to simply put away your phone and log out of your social media accounts unless there’s an emergency.

“It is important not to abuse these liberties,” Martinez says. “Focus on the task that is given to you, and if it includes social media, make sure that you are using departmental accounts, not your own.”

Martinez points out that if you’re focusing on work and looking for new opportunities to shine at your job, you shouldn’t have much time for leisure anyways. In this case, creating separate Google Chrome dashboards, as Miethner suggested, can go a long way in reducing the temptation to give yourself access to any social media accounts, since they won’t be in your tabs or bookmarks.

6. Leaving your documents disorganized

While digital technology has made it much easier to store information, the downside is that interns don’t always take the time to organize their Word documents as they would paper files. Heather R. Huhman, an experienced hiring manager and founder of Come Recommended, a public relations agency for job-seekers, suggests using Google Drive.

“Try to use different folders for your projects, meeting documents and information your boss gives you,” Huhman says. “It’s also a good idea to make sure you keep your documents organized on your desktop in folders that can be easily accessed by you or your supervisor.”

Google Drive is unique because its documents can be shared with other users who can all edit them at the same time. After logging in with your Google account, start by creating a folder labeled “Internship” to keep all your work documents in one place and separate from personal files. For subfolders, it’s best to experiment as you go. Try putting all your projects in one folder at first and then creating separate folders for the ones that require more tasks. If you work closely with other interns, it’s a good idea to start a document where everyone contributes notes about what they’re learning on the job to give one another tips. Huhman says it’s also crucial to keep in mind that you’re organizing for your boss, so use simple and specific labels that everyone can understand.

7. Sitting with bad posture

It might seem like a minute detail, but slouching in your chair can give the impression that you came to work tired, unfocused and careless. Miethner suggests being more conscious of particular body language signals, such as putting your elbows on your desk or cupping your chin with your hand when you’re talking to someone, since doing so might suggest that you’re not interested in what the other person is saying. Using your hands more when you talk can help you get out of these habits of leaning on your hands and will also make you appear more animated and energetic.

“Changing your body language will help you bring positive energy to work, and it will also make you feel better,” Miethner says. Improving your self-awareness at work in general can also help reduce the number of filler words such as “like” and “um” in your work conversations, which Miethner says will make you seem more mature and professional.

8. Always sticking to your desk

If you’ve followed all these rules about good behavior at your desk, then the last tip to keep in mind is that it’s also important to not be sitting at your desk the entire time! While your boss will certainly appreciate your quality work, Huhman says an intern should be aware of the opportunities that a company provides.

“If you’re given the opportunity to take a class or attend a company event as an intern, it’s absolutely necessary you take advantage of this chance,” she says.

Seek opportunities for growth whenever possible. For example, when Mary Garis, a freelance writer at ELLE.com, took a break to get a cupcake at a Cupcake ATM, she asked her boss if she could write about it. Mary’s article got published on ELLE.com, and she impressed her boss in the process.

Getting up from your desk and interacting with your boss and coworkers can be as simple as bringing up an idea or offering to do someone a favor, like getting coffee, because your enthusiasm will be remembered and rewarded down the road.

Many of these tips aren’t obvious to interns at first, so if you’ve made any of these mistakes, remember that it’s not the end of the world! Employers understand that you’re still learning, so it’s best to just own up to your actions and improve next time. Explain why you made the mistake without apologizing excessively, and show how you plan to fix the problem. If you take the right steps, you can turn every bad situation into a learning opportunity.

So collegiettes, what will you be wearing this festival season?

How to Text Guys Like a Pro

$

As if flirting weren’t already hard enough, perfecting the art of texting guys could be an Olympic sport! Finding the balance between overbearing and overly casual can be difficult. Not to mention, boys basically speak their own language, so trying to decipher what the heck they’re saying via text is an uphill battle. But there are a few tricks of the trade that make texting guys a little easier. Here are some tips you should follow to hold your own on your phone!

1. Be confident

Whoever said never text a guy first was so wrong. Sure, you shouldn’t have to always start the conversation, but putting yourself out there and getting things started shows confidence.

It can be hard to find a good conversation starter, but the “what’s up?” line has literally zero pizzazz. Being bold can be really attractive to guys, and it sets you apart by making you memorable. Whatever your flirting style is, it’s important to step up to the plate and do your best to hit a home run in texting.

“Some fun ways to flirt include, ‘Can’t stop thinking about last night,’ or, ‘I think I’m blushing today.’ This will show him that you’re attracted to him, and he’ll feel flattered,” says Julie Spira, dating expert and founder of Cyber-Dating Expert

You are awesome, and you have no reason to be nervous about texting a guy. Plus, you miss a hundred percent of the shots you don’t take, right? Be confident in yourself and it’ll come across in your texts, making him want you even more.

2. Play it cool

It’s exciting if you’re hitting it off with your crush, but being overly eager is sometimes a red flag for guys. Don’t overwhelm him with novels about your day when he asks how you’re doing. And definitely don’t bombard him with texts if he’s not responding. Double-texting is every guy’s worst nightmare, and you don’t want to come off as desperate or needy, because that’s so not you!

However, please don’t get caught up in trying to play some sort of waiting game to reel him in.

“As far as rules on when to return a text, don’t sit and bite your fingers counting the hours to pretend you’re not available,” Spira says. “If you hear from him and have your phone handy, respond in a reasonable time. This means within a few minutes to one hour. A study from online dating sites ChristianMingle.com and JDate showed that a reasonable response time is one hour or one to three hours. Anything after that sends a message that you’re really not that interested.”

Just be calm, cool and collected, and he’ll be sure to want more.

3. Less is more

An occasional smiley face is one thing, but making a picture story out of emojis is just a little bit excessive. As a rule of thumb, if you think you’re overdoing it, you probably are. Boys aren’t usually as expressive as girls, and, “OMG cool!!!!!!” may seem like enthusiasm to you, but can come off as crazy to guys. Just keep it casual and use emoticons sparingly.

“When it comes to texting and flirting, I always believe that less is more,” Spira says. “If you already have a texting relationship, sending a sweet text saying, ‘Hope you’re having a great day’ or, ‘thinking of you’ will cheer him up while he’s at work. The reason I like to include the word ‘great’ is that most guys have a positive reaction to that word. They’d like to think you’d have a great time with him and that you’re a happy person.”

You can always feel out his texting style and go off of that. But at least for starting things off, hold off on the dancing girl and hair-flip emojis every other text. Texting is an art form, and much like you don’t want to splatter-paint all over the Mona Lisa, it’s not necessary to riddle your conversation with emojis and explanation points.

But of course, when you feel that calling for a specific emoji, it’s okay to fall to temptation. They are tempting and basically the perfect form of expressing your thoughts and feelings. Just try to avoid emoticon overdose.

4. Let him do the texting

Flirting through texts doesn’t have to be some big puzzle. The best way to keep a conversation going is by actually having things to talk about. Ask him simple questions that will make him want to talk. Boys are just like us – they love talking about themselves. It gives you a chance to know him and breaks the ice by basically forcing him to text you back. Giving him open-ended questions keeps the convo flowing, and he’ll enjoy answering them.

However, “remember, guys don’t multitask typically the way that women do, so don’t get upset about quick text messages,” Spira says. “If you want to have a conversation, it’s best to pick up the phone.”

Still, don’t fall prey to fangirling over him and not getting a word in edgewise. He should be asking questions about you, too!

5. Know when to end it

It can be hard trying to wrap up a conversation, but the first step is being able to realize when the convo is fizzling out. If he’s starting to send one-word answers or is taking way too long to text back, then it’s probably time to call it quits. Make a graceful exit with a little bit more than just a. “see you later” or, “talk to you soon” text that still somehow leaves him wanting more. Try to conclude it with the possibility of making future plans.

“Who knows? It might turn into a date that night,” Spira says.

Leave it open for other conversations. Tell him why you have to go or that you’re excited to see him again. And if he responds back, let him have the last word and leave him wanting more.

6. Don’t overanalyze it

There is nothing worse than the “k” kiss of death. It’s like a punch in the gut, and our world comes spiraling down around us. But sometimes we overreact to what in reality was probably a quick text while he was distracted by something else or about to head into the gym. And we know what it’s like to stare at your phone waiting for a response. Why didn’t he text you back? Does he not like you? Is something wrong?

Maybe he just forgot to answer. Maybe he lost his phone. And before you know it, you’ve convinced yourself he was kidnapped by a gang and his phone is at the bottom of a lake. Chances are he’s busy or he forgot to text you back.

“Remember that guys often will respond to a text with a one-word or two-word answer. These may include, ‘ok,’ ‘great’ or ‘hang on,’” Spira says. “Guys don’t really want to see a novel on their mobile phones, so keep it brief to keep him interested. Long-winded text messages appear like heavy drama to a guy, so don’t think he’s not interested if you suggest a place to meet and provide the address and he responds with, ‘too far’ or, ‘sounds good.’”

And don’t torture yourself reading into every text he sends. Texts can be hard to decipher, and you can’t hear his tone, which can really stink.  But you’re gonna drive yourself crazy overanalyzing the conversation. Just let it happen!

7. Be yourself

When it comes down to it, even though you’re letting your thumbs do the talking, you should still be acting like yourself. There’s no point in playing games because you can’t base your relationship with someone off some weird rules someone once made up. This really isn’t rocket science; it’s just the 21st century’s version of flirting.

Don’t hide behind your phone and pretend to be someone else. If he doesn’t like you for you, he’s really not worth your time anyway. No use stressing yourself out trying to play mind games! You should be basically talking to him just like you would in person, and everything will fall into place.

Whether you’re texting your lifelong crush or that hottie from class for homework help, we wish you the best of luck in your endeavors! If you follow these simple guidelines, you should have no issues texting guys. Be yourself, be cool and be confident, and you’ll be a flirtexting pro!

5 Tips for Actually Getting Work Done in Your Dorm

$
0
0

In college, your dorm room is your haven from the outside world. What little privacy you have in college is confined within those four walls that contain your bedroom, kitchen and living room all in one compact space. And most of the time, only half of this already small space is yours.

Unfortunately, your room often serves as your study space as well, and when the library’s hours don’t sympathize with your impending all-nighter, your cozy bedroom must suddenly become study central. If you’re easily drawn away from your studies by your inviting bed and the newest episode of Grey’s Anatomy, read on for five tips on how to avoid temptation and ace your next test from the comfort of your dorm room.

1. Study at your desk

If your organic chemistry notes weren’t already putting you to sleep, getting into your bed definitely will. As enticing as your down comforter and fluffy pillows may look after a long day in class, don’t fall to temptation! Nothing is worse than getting in bed with three chapters to read for class and waking up eight hours later with the unopened book in your lap.

Art Markman, a psychology professor at the University of Texas at Austin, says that “the body’s habit when lying down is to relax and sleep,” so as you lay in bed flipping through your notes, your body actually takes a less active role in your studying. To fight your body’s natural desire to sleep, sit at your desk and mimic the feeling of sitting in class.

“I always find that if I’m studying in my dorm room I have to stay away from my bed; it’s too comfy and it puts me to sleep!” says Nadia, a senior at Rutgers University. As an alternative, Nadia suggests sitting at your desk and using a lot of light to keep you awake and focused on your studies. To make sure you accomplish everything on your to-do list, reserve your bed for sleeping and stick to your desk chair. Getting in bed when you’re done will be the perfect reward!

2. Keep your study space neat

If you’re looking to buckle down and memorize five chapters for your next test, organize your space and get rid of the makeup and snacks that seem to always be covering it. Limit your distractions by keeping your desk solely for studying! When you have such a small space to work in, organizing it can make you more focused, so gear your work space toward the type of homework you’re doing and check out some of HC’s favorite school supplies for a little desk inspiration.

3. Control your environment

When your entire hall seems to have no homework to do, silence can seem like a thing of the past. With noise-canceling headphones or quality earplugs, you can make the ruckus of college life fade away. Spotify, with the help of clinical psychologist Dr. Emma Gray, conducted a study that reveals the benefits of engaging your brain with music to complement your learning.

The music you choose and the beats per minute of that music should be based on the information you’re learning. For example, classical music with 60-70 beats per minute stimulates learning and enhances concentration for mathematicians, whereas pop music with 50-80 beats per minute allows the left side of your brain to take control, which is helpful for people studying the sciences, humanities and languages.

Try out noise-canceling headphones like the popular Beats by Dr. Dre headphones or this less expensive pair from Panasonic to silence dorm life.

If studying to music isn’t for you, try out some nice earplugs available at drugstores like CVS, Walgreens and Target to seclude yourself and hit the books. Most dorms have RA-enforced “quiet hours,” and your roommate would most likely be willing to hang out in another room if you’re looking for complete silence. Noise can be the biggest distraction from your studies, so try to get some quiet time while you review!

4. Limit your Internet usage

As college students, most of us fear missing a crucial tweet, Instagram or status update. In the hopes of staying constantly up to date, we leave tabs open for Facebook and Twitter for those “five-minute study breaks” that stretch into an hour.

Free Internet applications like SelfControl for Macs and Cold Turkey for PCs allow you to manually limit your access to various websites. You can set a list of sites you don’t want to access and both applications will block the addresses on your list for whatever time you choose. The beauty of social media is that all of those posts will still be there when you’re done, so you’re not really saying “goodbye,” but rather, “see you soon” to your digital friendships. A Facebook hiatus will keep you from complaining about your homework so that you have time to actually do it!

If you’ve downloaded every social media app on your phone like we have, try turning your phone off, or, if you have an iPhone, putting it on “do not disturb.” This setting on the iPhone silences calls, alerts and notifications so that you won’t be tempted to check your most recent texts. Your friends can also help keep you on track by safeguarding your phone or changing your social media passwords for you so you won’t even be able to log back on until they let you! They’ll be more than happy to save you from the temptation around you.

5. Take breaks

Research shows that taking scheduled breaks from your studies can make your brain more alert and productive. If you ever feel like you’ve been staring at a computer screen or book for too long, it’s probably because you have been! University of Illinois psychology professor Dr. Alejandro Lleras states that“constant stimulation is registered by our brains as unimportant, to the point that the brain erases it from our awareness.”

The Pomodoro Technique suggests taking breaks every 25 minutes to maximize your productivity during any given task. Breaking the material into chunks will make your homework feel much more manageable, and while taking a break may feel like a waste of time, the material will feel much fresher than before when you come back to it. Make your breaks productive by making yourself a cup of coffee or exercising. Both will wake your body up, making your next chunk of studying much more productive. You’ll be surprised how much more efficient you can be just by taking a few breaks!

These five easy tips will put your dorm room’s versatility to good use and save you from mind-numbing hours spent in the library. Maybe your own room will turn out to be the perfect study spot you’ve been searching for all year!

5 Tips for Nailing the Perfect Photo-Ready Outfit

It’s happened to every fashionista at some point: You’re scrolling through Pinterest and suddenly you come across the perfect street style look—flawless styling, shoes to die for and the latest It-bag, all photographed from the perfect angle—and you hit re-pin immediately. But how do the bloggers and street style stars do it? After all, it has to take tons of energy and pricey designer labels to create the perfect photo-ready outfit, right? Wrong. With a few easy tips and tricks, it’s easy to make any outfit look picture perfect. We show you the tricks for nailing the street style star look.

1. Layer up

The easiest way to add interest to any look? Layering, of course! We love the way street style bloggers like Sincerely Jules pile on extra pieces to add colors, prints, and textures to a look! The best part about layering? It’s easy to make a flawless outfit out of the staples you already have in your closet. To get the look, try wearing an open denim shirt over a casual white tee and a grey tailored vest or jacket. Finish off the outfit with a leather skirt on bottom to give it an edge! For another on-trend layering combo, try a turtleneck top peeking out of a dress, which incorporates another layer to a simple dress and keeps you warm on chillier days!

2. It’s all in the details

To make those zoomed-in shots really pop, street style stars are all about the little details. Whether it’s a little bit of fringe on a skirt, dainty embroidering on a blouse or a killer pair of shoes, wearing pieces with interesting or quirky little touches will make those close-up outfit shots all the more chic! To get the look, we love a super trendy bohemian skirt with fringe detail. For the girlier dresser, a pencil skirt with an elegant lace hem does the trick. Statement shoes with a pattern like snake or leopard are also a great way to add game-changing accents to your look!

3. Proportion play

To make your look extra dramatic, playing with different proportions, lengths and sizes is the way to go! Oversize pieces like chunky knits, wide-leg culottes and midi skirts are definitely having a moment among the street style set, and are easy pieces to throw on when you need to spice up a minimal look. Worried about oversize pieces causing you to look large in front of the camera? Try picking one oversize statement piece, and keeping the rest of the look fitted and streamlined for the most flattering silhouette.

4. Color it up

It’s true: Fashionistas love their blacks, grays and neutrals, but to really make an outfit photo-ready, a colorful accent piece in a monochrome outfit can go a long way! We love the way street style blogger Annabel Rosendahl uses her pink coat to add a fashion forward touch to an otherwise all gray look, making for a street style snap that we can’t take our eyes off of! To get the look, it helps to pick a colorful piece and build your full outfit around it—try a colorful topper over a minimal outfit, or a bright statement wrap skirt with a gray or camel top!

5. Bring on the accessories

For some street style stars, the rule is always “more is more” when it comes to accessories. In the best street style snaps of fashion’s risk takers like Anna Dello Russo, statement-making accessories and stacked jewelry are what make the look! The easiest way to up your accessories game? Try a bold bag! A bag with an eye-catching color or an unexpected texture is a great way to add a fashion-forward touch to your look. To make your outfit stand out even more, feel free to pile on the jewelry! Pieces like statement necklaces and sparkly ear cuffs can take any look from ordinary to photo-ready.

If you needed more proof that Anna Kendrick really is just like us, look no further. From her hilarious Twitter account to her amazing musical talent to her fun personality, we can all agree that Anna would be the coolest celeb BFF. When asked how she stays out of the tabloids in an interview with Glamour UK, Kendrick said, "Part of it is because I'm dressed really boring in sweatpants and sneakers, so those pictures just don’t sell. You need to be really styled—in the perfect leather jacket and little booties, and have your red lipstick and your coffee—and I haven't managed that yet. If I've got jeans on, it's a good day.”

Once again Anna, we couldn't agree more. Keep rocking those sweatpants!

15 Ways Life Changes After College Graduation

As much as we complained about assignments and exams, when we look back on our college days, sometimes it feels like life was a never-ending vacation. Then we graduate, and suddenly we realize life doesn’t consist of spending 24/7 with besties and that FOMO is how we feel about our social life in general, not just how we feel when skipping out on a frat party one weekend. What is it that changes, exactly, the moment we turn our tassels and settle into life as graduettes? Here are a few things.

1. In college, you’re excited about your newfound independence and are ready for a good time.

In the real world, you feel overwhelmed because there are too many responsibilities and you can’t even.

2. In college, you’re surrounded by a bunch of other twentysomethings, and life is a party.

In the real world, you’re surrounded by a bunch of 50-year-old coworkers.

3. In college, your wardrobe doubles because your fashionable roommate lets you wear her clothes.

In the real world, your wardrobe goes back to whatever is in your closet… which is lacking, because more than half your paycheck goes to rent.

4. In college, you have access to a free gym, but never took advantage of it.

In the real world, you pay a pretty penny for a gym membership and still never take advantage of it.

5. In college, going out is a nightly ritual.

In the real world, going out is a rare occasion. You’d rather stay in and watch an SVU marathon because you’re tired.

6. In college, you feel like the most popular girl on campus.

In the real world, making friends is a challenge and you feel #foreveralone.

7. In college, you have an unlimited supply of food at your fingertips.

In the real world, you’re broke, so you only feast when your parents visit once a year.

8. In college, you drink to get drunk.

In the real world, you drink one glass of wine and fall asleep on the couch.

9. In college, there are so many guys—being single is so. Much. Fun.

In the real world, you realize it’s a lot harder to meet guys, and being single is the worst.

10. In college, spring break is a week full of sunshine, fruity drinks and dancing.

In the real world, spring break is when you’re stuck at work, getting serious FOMO from looking at your Facebook News Feed.

11. In college, you get to wear a sexy costume on Halloween.

In the real world, you get to sit on your porch and pass out candy.

12. In college, you pull all-nighters and don’t schedule anything before noon on Fridays.

In the real world, you go to bed by 10 p.m. every night because you have to wake up early and go to work—yes, even on Fridays.

13. In college, you spend your weekends catching up on homework.

In the real world, you spend your weekends catching up on laundry.

14. In college, you have group projects, which are supposed to prepare you for the real world.

In the real world, you have conference calls, and you still don’t get what anyone is saying.

15. In college, you figure out what you want to be when you grow up.

In the real world, you realize what really matters in life.

How to Do Your Hair When You Don't Have Time to Shower

Mounds of crushed coffee cups, blood shot eyes, long nights in the library. It must be midterms! Everyone’s feeling the pressure to keep those academic spirits high. And as a result, your morning routine might have less “you time.” Luckily, there’s a way to look pulled together even if you’re feeling a little—or a lot—hectic. Here are easy hairstyles to get you through a long week... clean hair not required.

1. Head scarf

If you have oily hair, your roots probably start to get greasy after only one day. Kind of a bummer, we know. But you can have the best of both worlds with this cute updo from Keiko Lynn. Pull your hair back into a topknot; the messier, the better! Center the scarf on your head and double knot it in the front. Tuck the ends out of sight and there you have it!

2. Ultimate topknot

Speaking of topknots, this style is unique but still easy to accomplish. Gather your hair into a high ponytail. Back comb and tease it gently, giving it volume but not letting it get tangled. Then, just start pinning! Wrap strands of hair around the base of the ponytail and pin them in place. Build up the knot by overlapping the hair.

3. Fishtail bun

Dirty hair makes for perfect fishtail braids! Hair that hasn’t been shampooed can hold the intricate fishtail all day long. Try a new take by turning that braid into a really cool updo. Gather your hair into a ponytail. Braid the ponytail into a fishtail braid and tie it off with elastic. Widen the braid by gently pulling it apart with your fingers. Wrap the braid around the ponytail and pin generously.

4. Twisty buns

Another great way to pull your hair out of your face (and look like you totally tried this morning) is this twisty bun style. Simply separate your hair into two mini ponytails. Twist them and tie them off with elastic. Wrap each twist around the other to create a bun and pin in place.

Second-day hair has never looked better!

'The Notebook' vs. Real Life: 8 Sad-but-True Differences

$
0
0

Spoiler alert: your love life is not a Nicholas Sparks classic.

1. The Notebook: Noah asks Allie out with a grand, romantic gesture that’s impossible to refuse.

Your life: A guy shows you he’s interested in you by drunkenly grinding up on you at a frat party.

2. The Notebook: Noah and Allie’s first date is a movie (totally normal)... but then they go dancing in the street and basically fall in love instantly.

Your life: You and a guy have a “first date” in a dining hall. You eat questionable meat loaf and text other people the entire time.

3. The Notebook: Allie and Noah’s first kiss is straight steamy. No first kiss has ever gone that well.

Your life: Your last kiss was with that cute guy from your calc class (you think?) at the bar. It was a little sloppy, but it still counts, right?

4. The Notebook: Noah writes Allie a letter every. Single. Day. For a year.

Your life: The guy you've been hooking up with finally responds to your text from yesterday... at 2 a.m.

5. The Notebook: For Noah and Allie, fights last about 3.2 seconds and are immediately resolved with kisses.

Your life: A fight with your boyfriend usually ends with you ugly-crying and the silent treatment. For three days.

6. The Notebook: Noah says cute, overly romantic things, all the time, forever and ever.

Your life: The last time a guy said something nice to you was when he told you your shoe was untied. It was super thoughtful.

7. The Notebook: When Noah and Allie get intimate (you know the scene), it’s passionate, in the perfect setting and completely un-awkward in every way.

Your life: Seriously hooking up means squeaky dorm-room beds, paper-thin walls and that awkward conversation about condoms. Oh, and then your roommate walks in.

8. The Notebook: Noah fixes up an entire house for Allie, just because. And then he takes her on a romantic boat ride through a pond of swans. SWANS.

Your life: One time, a guy bought you a drink, flirted with you all night, asked for your number and then never contacted you again.

Basically, The Notebook is the most romantic thing that’s happened to our generation, and no real romance can ever compare.

Probably because our boyfriends aren’t Ryan Gosling.

The 9 Best April Fools' Internet Pranks of 2015

Unless you're a jokester year-round, April Fools' is probably one of those days that you try to remember is coming up... until you end up forgetting. Then, before you know it, it's April 1 again and you've already fallen for the latest hoax. But don't worry, you're not alone. We've already fallen for one too many jokes today, and the day isn't even over. Here's a round-up of the best pranks from around the Internet:

1. Amazon's throwback homepage

If you ended up on this mega retailer's website today, you probably noticed that it had a vintage feel, and by that we mean it resembled a website you would visit on your parent's PC more than a decade ago when you had to struggle with dial-up Internet access. Joke's on us, Amazon!

2. Motorola's leather-bound selfie stick

Based on how quickly the phone tool became a cultural phenomenon, Motorola's selfie stick seemed legitimate, at least for a few seconds of the commercial. Maybe we sensed something when the actor compared crafting the "useful accessory" to the sun when it "turns rain into a rainbow," but we chose to ignore it and finish out the heartfelt - yet hilarious - ad.

3. Teach For America's Facebook announcement that Zayn Malik was their newest member

We’re excited to welcome Zayn Malik, who has accepted our offer to join the 2015 corps after announcing his departure...

Posted by Teach For America on Wednesday, April 1, 2015

This one seriously got us... Who knows what Zayn Malik is up to post-1D, anyway?!

4. Her Campus' announcement about the launch of HerMoms.com

Okay so we had a little (or a lot) of fun fooling you with this one! We're willing to bet that the last thing you'd want is for your mom to have a go-to site for advice on how to get a hold of you and how to find you on social media... Don't worry, we'll keep you safe.

5. Petco's dog selfie-stick

If companies are able to fool us left and right with all things selfie-sticks, we're clearly way too obsessed with this phone accessory. There's no doubt in our minds that some pet owners would have shelled out $49.95 so their dogs could have their own selfies. The only question was, how would the photo be triggered? An owner-controlled remote? A woof? TBH, we wish this were real.

6. Turkey Hill's ice cream headache prevention helmet

Brain freezes are a real problem, especially when you love ice cream as much as we do. So it was a real letdown to find out this ingenious "invention" was just nothing more than a hoax.

7. Cupcakes and Cashmere's Coachella crown tutorial

Emily Schuman, who writes the successful lifestyle blog Coachella Crown, has always been up for April Fools' Day jokes. That's why we weren't surprised by the prank - we just loved seeing what she came up with this year. The craziest part about her over-the-top DIY floral crown? We'll probably see some Coachella-goers rocking it anyway.

8. Samsung's BLADE Edge

Dubbed the "ultimate cooking companion," the BLADE Edge would've been one of those products that seemed really cool, but was 100 percent unnecessary... unless having a kitchen knife that doubled as a cell phone would be useful to you. Seriously though, the finger-detecting sensor on the blade sounded handy.

9. Tesco's Bouncy Aisles

Tesco may be an English-based grocer, but we all know the struggle of reaching for a top-shelf item at the supermarket no matter which continent we're on. This is seriously something we were bummed wasn't real. Guess we're going to put off grocery shopping (and other adult world tasks) even longer...

Zayn Malik Releases Solo Track After Leaving One Direction

So much for taking a break…

It’s been a rough week for millions of dedicated Directioners around the world, to say the least. And now, Zayn’s decision to go another direction (yes, pun intended) is getting messy. Less than a week after Zayn officially announced his departure from One Direction, a solo track titled “I Won’t Mind” was posted online, sending fans into a frenzy. The song was posted on Soundcloud by music producer Naughty Boy, who has worked closely with Zayn in the past.

Prior to releasing the song, Naughty Boy retweeted a video on Twitter (below), which prompted the initial fangirl outrage. Even Louis Tomlinson voiced his outrage, sparking a Twitter feud with the producer.

Shortly afterwards, Naughty Boy posted a tweet saying, “let the music do the talking guys. thank us later. :) x,” followed by a Soundcloud link. Needless to say, chaos ensued when fans discovered Zayn’s solo track. In fact, Zayn has lost more than 50,000 followers on Twitter since the song was released. A few hours later, the track was deleted from Soundcloud due to the heavy backlash, but it lives on thanks to YouTube.

Now in a turn of events, reports claim that “I Won’t Mind” is no indication of the music that Zayn plans on releasing as a solo artist. According to The Daily Mail, the track is supposedly a demo of a song originally considered for One Direction’s most recent album, Four. The acoustic-driven, moody song ultimately didn’t make it onto the album.

In case you didn’t catch the song on Soundcloud before its removal, check it out below:

7 Signs You Survived Massachusetts Winter

This winter Boston broke its snowfall record with a whopping 108.6 inches. The snow came with temperatures in the negatives as well as bitter winds, begging all of us Bostonians to ask the question: Are we in Massachusetts, or are we north of the Wall? Keep reading for signs that you successfully braved it through these crazy past couple of months:

1. 36-degree weather feels like summer to you.

*Tans outside in bikini and snow boots*

2. Your shoes are permanently white from all of the salt covering them.

Eh, just an excuse to go shopping. Now that you've emerged from hibernation, of course.

3. You've had to attend Saturday class for the first time ever because of the unreal amount of snow days you've had.

Just kidding, you didn't go.

4. You're an expert at detecting black ice and tip-toeing across it safely.

Most of the time, anyways.

5. You've tried to climb over a six-foot-high snow bank, tripped over it, fell, got up and looked around to make sure that no one saw you.

Just smooth down your hair and walk briskly away.

6. You've become an expert at stocking up for impromptu blizzards.

Annie's mac and cheese? Check. Cookie butter? Check. 10 boxes of pizza rolls? Check. Bottle of wine? Check. Back-up bottle of wine? Double check.

7. And hot chocolate with amaretto is your new drink of choice.

Who needs wine? Okay, we do. We need wine.

7 Questions to Ask Your Boss Before Your Internship Ends

$
0
0

When it comes to internships, we've all had our fair share of "what if" moments—what if I had done this one project differently? What if I had gotten to know so-and-so better? What if I had just gone up to my supervisor and asked the questions I wanted to ask?

Collegiettes, it’s officially time to change the "what if" to the "just did." It’s pretty safe to say that we’re all trying to get the most learning and networking out of our internships, so don’t be hesitant to go up to your supervisor and ask a lot of good questions. You'll impress your boss and get some answers at the same time. Plus, you might never get another chance like this once your internship ends! So take advantage of your intern status now and check out these seven questions you should definitely ask your supervisor while you're still interning for her.

1. "Can I touch base with you about both your expectations of me and my personal goals for this internship?"

You might have some huge aspirations for your internship—being a major contributor to a project or landing a full-time job, for example—but your supervisor might not have the darndest clue. If you're going to get the most out of your internship, you have to make sure that you and your boss are on the same page when it comes to the larger goals of your internship and actively working to achieve them. Ideally, aim to touch base multiple times throughout the internship so you know you're on track from both your supervisor's standpoint and your own.

"It's all about timing and the power of access," says Kimberly Rolfe, the director for business engagement at Whitman College. "If you're still on their payroll, they're more likely to give you their attention. An employer wants an engaged and energized intern—especially if they're looking to transition someone into full-time employment."

But with your supervisor zipping around all day and having his or her hands full 24/7, it might be hard to squeeze in a few words. In this case, you have to be creative with finding ways to get the answers you need. If you need advice determining the best approach for reaching a supervisor, coworkers can shed some light on how they've had success.

"I recommend a scheduled one-on-one, but you have to know your audience," Rolfe says. "If your supervisor is a better written communicator, then you'll get a more useful response via email.  If they are incredibly busy, you have to figure out how you'll get their time and attention to have a meaningful dialogue."

Once you've got your boss's attention, convey your enthusiasm by showing interest in not only achieving your own goals, but also helping the company achieve its goals. What do you hope to take away from this internship? Are you learning the skills you were hoping to gain? How are you contributing to the company? Is your work meeting your supervisor's expectations? According to Rolfe, the answers you and your supervisor come up with should include the expected outcomes for both the employer and the student.

"A demonstrated interest in the outcome not only for the individual, but for the organization shows the supervisor that the intern is committed to learning, interested in the field and invested in their future," Rolfe says.

There's a lot of give-and-take, and the over-quoted phrase "You get what you give" is actually pretty appropriate in this case.

2. "What do you feel is currently missing from the team, and how can I fill that gap?"

Every team has its weaknesses, and as the flexible, free-to-wander, not-yet-established intern, you're in the perfect position to fill in those weak spots. Find a niche for yourself, and you'll be ready to go. If a team has been struggling to find someone who is good at or willing to do X, establish yourself as the go-to person for X. That way, you'll end up doing more meaningful work, feeling more like a part of the team and learning a lot.

"One of the most valuable questions I asked a new supervisor—long into my career—was what they were needing from the team in place that they felt was missing," Rolfe says. "Then, I was able to focus my efforts in that area to make myself more valuable to the organization and my supervisor.”

You can make yourself irreplaceable by acquiring the skills that are needed. If it's something more technical, find resources in your network or online to help you gain those skills. If it's a soft skill, like communication or teamwork, "dig a bit to find out what success in those areas would look like to your supervisor," Rolfe says. She also suggests interns fine their areas of expertise and hone those skills, but not at the expense of other work that the department or organization may need.

"Your job as an intern is to learn from the organization in whatever way the internship is structured, so that should be your primary goal," Rolfe says. "It's a delicate balance between creating your individual value and adding that value to a project team or department to contribute to organizational goals."

In the end, being considerate and aware of what the organization needs from you goes a long way and can even put you in a better position to be offered a full-time job!

3. "How am I doing? What can I do to improve, and how can I go about doing so?"

It's great to go full speed into a new internship, but it's also important to remember to take some pit stops from time to time. Some collegiettes may have a few bumps and winding roads along the way; some may not. Some may zip by a few stop signs without even realizing it, and some collegiettes won’t. No matter what your road conditions and driving habits are, it's always a good idea to check in with the authorities every now and then.

Your supervisors are there to help you succeed, so make sure you're giving them the opportunity to give you feedback. If you're not doing so well, ask them for critique. While it's definitely hard to take critique, it’s one of the best ways to learn.

"We are a society that thrives on success and winning, but there is so much more to learn from failing and the critique of those you work with," Rolfe says. "My tip for taking criticism well is to ask for an honest assessment and then just listen. Ask clarifying questions if necessary, but do not respond, do not argue, do not feel that you need to defend—you're there to learn."

In fact, make sure to take notes when your supervisor offers critique to show that you're earnest about understanding it.  Thank your supervisor for the time and then take time to digest the information you've been given. How do you feel about it?  How can you improve and adjust?  What are you missing that they need, and how can you bring that to your work? According to Rolfe, there’s no need to respond unless you've been asked, but simply adjust your work style to address the critique or follow up if you need further clarification.

And if you're getting pats on the back, still ask your supervisor for things you can do better. After all, there's always room for improvement!

4. "How did you get to where you are today?"

Let's admit it—people love talking about themselves. Your supervisors are probably no different! But instead of talking about their latest successes at the shopping mall or the fun they had at the party that you totally shouldn't have missed, your bosses will shower you with pieces of sage advice they’ve learned from their own experiences.

But really, at a time when you're trying to figure out your future career path, your supervisor is a fantastic resource. Bosses have been where you've been (oh, right; they were our age once!) and have taken both right and wrong turns, yet, through it all, they've somehow navigated the industry and ended up where they are today. Keep your ears open, because there's some invaluable advice amidst the life stories.

"I personally tend to ask questions about what choices my supervisors made to make it to the career they are in," says Josephine Barnor, a rising senior at the University of Tennessee and an intern at Ernst & Young. "Gaining … insights about your career choices helps you make a right decision."

You can really ask this question to anyone—supervisors, alumni and network connections. Usually, it's asked during either your initial or final meeting with the supervisor or over a casual lunch break or ad hoc conversation.

"It's a great way to kill time on the way to a meeting or waiting for one to start," Rolfe says. "I would dive right in with a casual tone so it sounds like small talk but allows them to share their insight and experience with you."

If you listen to their stories, you’ll be a whole lot better at writing your own. And we promise they won't be like another one of those, "When I was your age" stories your grandmother always tells!

5. "Could you recommend people in the field whom I could talk to about my career?"

Networking, networking, networking—you can never do enough. And when it comes to building a career network for yourself, your supervisor is definitely not someone you want to consider lightly. Supervisors might know people who may be willing to mentor you or provide invaluable information about the industry. Before you leave an internship, make sure to strengthen those ties.

"I would certainly recommend that any intern ask not only their supervisor, but also coworkers to connect them to others in the field that would be a valued resource for information that could help shape their career," Rolfe says.

Plus, asking for contacts also shows your genuine interest in the field and in the future. It's a win-win!

6. "What courses do you suggest I take in school to maximize my learning?"

At the end of the day, you're still a student, and your main objective is still to learn. While you may have already gained lots of hands-on experience from the internship, you're still going to have to rely on learning in the classroom when the summer's over. Before you have to return back to campus, remember to ask your supervisor what courses you can take at school to continue learning, growing and preparing for you career.

Josephine thinks this is the number one question to ask supervisors toward the end of internships in order to gain insight and to show initiative for career preparation. Before you ask, however, Rolfe suggests first re-considering the answers you received from question #2 above, because you might already have received similar advice already.

"If you're enjoying the internship and want to return to the organization or continue to pursue the field, then I would certainly seek out their advice for the ‘must haves’ - whether you choose to add them to your academic program or seek out that learning via other methods is then up to you," Rolfe says. "However, ensure that you've considered [previous conversations] before you specify to the course level to avoid redundancy.  It can also be very valuable to seek out their opinion if you are considering post-grad education."

Your supervisors will already be familiar with what you've been working on during the internship and are in a position to suggest wise next steps for you to take regarding your academics.

7. "What skills or traits are my real assets?"

At this point you're probably thinking, “enough with the improvements; let's focus on the good stuff!” Wish granted. While it's useful to ask for critique and focus on improvement, sometimes it's nice to look at what you're doing right. And who better to ask than your supervisor? Not only will this make your ego happy, but this will also give you insight into what you're genuinely good at, which will help you find a career that's right for you.

"Looking back on the direction my career took after my internship, I wish I would have asked her what skills she felt were my real assets," Rolfe says. "If I had known that earlier in my career, it might have saved some frustration down the road.  People are often happy to share where you need to improve, but hearing what you do well so you can focus on using those skills more in your work is very helpful."

Of course, it's hard not to sound like you're fishing for compliments. One way to ask this question in a more humble way is to simply ask what strengths you bring to the team and how you're adding value to the work being done.

"Everyone has strengths that they bring to an organization, and if a supervisor is building their team well, they are balancing the strengths of the team to create a stronger whole," Rolfe says. "Sometimes a supervisor will turn this question around on you and ask the same thing of you, so be prepared to share what you see as your contributions and assets."

Whether the things you'll hear are reassertions or surprises, learning about your real assets will not only help you figure out the right career path for you, but will also help you learn more about who you are as a person.

Although the summer is quickly coming to a close (can you believe it?), there’s still time for you to approach your supervisor and ask some great questions. She’s there to help you get in as much learning and networking as possible, so take every chance to listen to and learn from her while you still can!

We were excited when it was first announced that Trevor Noah would be taking over The Daily Show on Comedy Central, but after a little Twitter stalking, it seems he may not be the best man for the job. After it was announced Monday that Noah would be taking Jon Stewart's place, fans found some unsettling tweets on his personal profile. He's made some pretty upsetting comments against Jewish individuals and poked fun at women for their weight. Not only are these tweets offensive, but they also don't match the type of humor fans want to see on The Daily Show.

Comedy Central released a statement supporting Noah, stating that they will stick to their decision to bring him on as the new host. Noah also tweeted out his own reponse, saying, "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian." While he does have a point, the fact that he's made such offensive jokes certainly doesn't reflect well on his character. Many fans of the show are claiming that they won't watch this new reboot of the show at all.

After all this controversy, will you still watch Trevor Noah as the new host of The Daily Show?
