10 Celeb Beach Looks to Steal for Spring Break

0
0

After as long and hard of a winter as we've just been through, there's nothing better than a spring break getaway to a sunny location. Living it up in the surf and sand is the perfect antidote to those blizzard blues! But it's difficult to look cute when the sun's in your eyes and you're sweating up a storm. Keep your cool when the weather heats up by taking a cue from these celebs, who have beach dressing down to a fine art.

1. Rihanna

Rihanna's retro bikini and mirrored sunglasses get a modern update with high top sneakers, a denim shirt and a patent leather purse.

2. Kate Hudson

The beach is the perfect place to rock your natural texture. Keep it tame with a silky scarf, like Kate Hudson does, for when you're playing beach volleyball.

3. Miranda Kerr

Kerr's look is all about clean lines, with leather sandals and a ladylike shirtdress in a wild leopard print.

4. Jessica Alba

Alba's patterned kimono adds something extra to a plain bikini. Add a panama hat and you're golden.

5. Olivia Palermo

A flirty mini dress in a bright print, like this one seen on style icon Olivia Palermo, is a great way to cover up while still showing some skin. Add some long necklaces to funk it up!

6. Taylor Swift

The reigning street style queen keeps up her reputation at the beach in fun but sophisticated high-waist shorts and a loose collared shirt. Classy, as always!

7. Sophia Vergara

The Modern Family star proves a simple one-piece can be far from bland by adding a bold maxi skirt.

8. Vanessa Hudgens

Belt a flowy maxi sundress like Vanessa's for a look that will take you straight from sunning on the beach to sightseeing around town.

9. Selena Gomez

Selena's high-waist denim cutoffs, flowy tank and bohemian jewelry are a trendy take on a classic combo.

10. Miley Cyrus

A delicate gold body chain like Miley's adds a girly but unexpected element to any beach look.

Which one of these looks will you be sporting this spring break, collegiettes?

Starbucks is Opening the Discussion on Race Relations

0
0

Starbucks, the popular haven of caffeine-laced concoctions and assorted baked goodies, is now unveiling their newest product: hot button topic discussions. That's right, your baristas are no longer simply the connoisseurs of delectable drinks. According to a new initiative launched by CEO Howard Schultz, baristas are now being encouraged to engage in debate with customers about one of the biggest subjects in our society to date: race relations. According to the new campaign, baristas will now be able to give out cups labeled with the phrase "Race Together," and subsequently start up a chat with customers about the status of race and racism in America. The baristas will be under no obligation to do this, but with persons of color making up 40 percent of Starbucks' workforce, this opens up the door for serious discussion all over the country.

This is an extremely bold and important move on Schultz's behalf. The issue, while it has received national media attention, still lags on actual administrative action; and this new initiative could increase the possibility of unimaginable opportunities. One of the biggest roadblocks facing the activists for racial equality is that not enough people are on board with the idea that there is a crisis in this country. Perhaps it's because many are not so quick to lose faith in the officers who are sworn to protect citizens, or it may be rooted in deeper racial biases—either way, the issue can only take off and get traction if more people start talking about it. Police brutality is just the tip of the iceberg, and we can infer that no issue will be off limits in these dialogues.

On the other hand, this move could also prove to be dangerous, and could even backfire on Starbucks with the opposite result. These are, after all, very emotional and crucial topics, where lives are at stake. With such a big portion of Starbucks employees being persons of color, these debates could easily turn into arguments with the slightest misuse of words—and frankly, nobody goes to a Starbucks to be exposed to heated disagreements. It could all spiral out of control very easily, and such an event would not be helpful to the furthering of the movement. It's difficult for us to calmly discuss these issues even in a classroom or residential setting, let alone a commercial business where dozens of customers pass through every hour (and let's not forget that there might also be children present when these talks go south).

Ultimately, we applaud Starbucks for attempting an initiative so progressive (especially one that many businesses might shy away from addressing), and we are definitely looking forward to see how this plays out!

In the case of this salad, layer all of the items above in the order they are mentioned, beginning with the dressing and ending with the bacon. Seal it with a lid, pop it into your bag and you're good to go!

To Make It: Layer beginning with Greek yogurt and ending with lettuce! Heaviest and wettest items should go on the bottom and the lightest and driest items should go on the top.

To Make It: Cook the noodles and allow them to soften for about five minutes. Sautée the bell pepper, carrots, and mushrooms until they are tender but crisp. To prepare the dressing, whisk together lime juice, garlic, vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil in a small bowl (you can add salt and pepper to taste). Add dressing to the jar first, followed by edamame, noodles, the mixture of vegetables, sesame seeds and the lime wedge.

5. Strawberry Spinach Salad

5 Questions to Ask Your Professor in Office Hours

0
0

Talking to professors can be tricky. Standing out in a lecture hall full of hundreds of students can be nearly impossible, so it’s important to visit your professors during office hours. But what do you ask once you’re there? Whether you’re hoping to improve your performance in class or simply just trying to get your professor to remember you, HC has you covered with a few simple questions to ask your professor to get yourself ahead of the game.

1. What made you want to teach this class?

Try and get to know your professor. Not every teacher wants to just stand in front of a large lecture hall and spew out class notes every single day; some actually want to have a relationship with their students, and asking this question will let your professor know that you’re interested in getting to know him or her on a more personal level. Ashley, a sophomore at Duke University, ended up visiting one of her professors so much that it almost became a daily ritual for her. “I like to make my professors know who I am so they can give me a second look,” she says.

2. What’s the most important thing I can take away from this class?

A student who’s willing to learn is more important to a professor than anything. Not only do your professors want you to do well in the course, but they also want you to be able to leave the class at the end of the semester and try to apply some of what they’ve taught you to real life. Be sure to let your teacher know that you’re thinking about the bigger picture in terms of the class and that you do actually have an interest in the subject, even if it’s not related to your major.

3. How would you ask us about this topic on an exam?

Every course is designed differently. When exams count for a large portion of your final grade, it’s important to know what they’re like and how to prepare for them. Asking this question will give you a better idea of how the tests are organized, what you need to focus on and how often you should study the material.

4. How can I improve my grade?

We all begin new semesters wanting to ace all of our classes. But somewhere along the line, with all the partying and the stress from our extracurricular activities, we tend to let our study habits slip up a little. Not only will this question help you find out how to get an A in the course, but it will also let your professor know that you take the class seriously and you care about doing well.

“I’ll usually ask my teachers to look over my papers just to make sure I’m doing well,” says Amber, a student at Columbia University. “If I can at least make the gesture of asking for help and getting them to know who I am, there’s a better chance they’ll bump my grade up from an 89 to a 90.”

5. I didn’t quite understand X in class. Can you explain it to me again?

Being afraid to ask questions can hurt you more than help you. “I was afraid to ask questions in one of my classes because I felt like everyone understood the material except for me,” says Brittany, a student at the University of Georgia. “A few days before our first exam, I barely even understood what we were doing in class.”

Your professors are there for a reason! It’s important to take advantage of their time and ask all the questions that you can before it’s too late. A one-on-one meeting is a great place for you to ask a professor to explain a complicated concept in detail.

Remember, your professors are required to hold office hours, so make sure you’re taking advantage of this by visiting them and asking the right questions!

Dolce & Gabbana Speak Out on Their Controversial Statements About Gay Families

0
0

Just last week, Panorama magazine published an interview featuring Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, which revealed the couple's feelings about same-sex families and in vitro fertilization. Their thoughts were controversial, to say the least.

Not only did the designers, who were formerly a couple, voice their opposition toward gay adoption and comment that "the only family is the traditional one," but they also stated that children born through IVF are "children of chemistry, synthetic children." Many famous fans of the luxury brand were quick to fire back. Elton John, whose two sons were conceived through IVF, took to Instagram to condemn the designers' comments and vow to boycott the brand.

Ironically enough, John was spotted toting a D&G shopping bag just one day later, though his publicist claims the snap was photoshopped, according to The Independent. Gabbana responded earlier this week with the hashtag #boycotteltonjohn.

John isn't the only celebrity to speak out about the statements made by the designers:

In the most recent turn of events, Dolce and Gabbana sat down with CNN to defend what they had said to Panorama. While they didn't take back their original statements, the duo clarified that they were simply voicing their own opinions and not judging anyone who chooses IVF. Dolce added that the two "love gay couples and gay adoption" and that their comments were just "a point of view." Dolce also cited his traditional Sicilian upbringing for his views on what constitutes a family. But should these personal thoughts and opinions have been kept to themselves?

What are your thoughts on this stir, collegiettes?

This is How Long It'll Take to Close the Gender Wage Gap

0
0

According to a recent study by the Institute for Women's Policy Research, the gender wage gap is still very much existent in states all across the country—though it is more prominent in some states than others. Based on the IWPR's analysis, it will take almost 150 years before the women in Wyoming start making as much as the men in Wyoming working in the same positions. Alternatively, women in Florida could start making the same amount as their male counterparts in less than 25 years.

The projections in this research are based on the rate of progress each state has made in closing the gender wage gap since 1959. The average American woman shouldn't anticipate being paid the same amount as her male counterparts until around 2058.

Currently, women in America make 78 cents for every dollar that an American man makes, but that wage gap is not consistent across all states in the country. Right now, New York is the closest to closing the gender wage gap, with women there earning about 88 cents for every dollar that men are making. However, in Louisiana, women make only 67 cents to each dollar their male counterparts earn.

13 Struggles of Being Type A

0
0

Your friends always tease you about it, and you’ve been called uptight more than once. Whether you’re a self-proclaimed neat freak or just really hate disorganization, the struggle of being Type A is real. Here are all things that Type A’s have to deal with day in and day out—in list form, naturally.

1. Your closet is organized by color, which always raises the question of where multi-colored shirts belong.

2. The kitchen and bathroom in your apartment always have to be spotless… which becomes problematic when your roommates hate chores.

3. The idea of clutter makes you cringe, so watching Hoarders is enough to give you an anxiety attack.

4. Making to-do lists calms you down, and sometimes you add something arbitrary just so you can cross it off.

5. Your planner is like your personal color-coordinated Bible. If you ever lose it, you’ll probably die.

6. You hate people who are late, so you’re perpetually early to everything.

7. Sometimes you can be terribly impatient, which makes standing in a Starbucks line downright excruciating.

8. Multi-tasking is one of your biggest strengths, which explains why you’re constantly busy.

9. All of your assignments take way longer than they should because you insist on editing them until they’re perfect.

10. Group projects are the bane of your existence. Things would go a lot quicker if you could just work by yourself.

11. Unread emails stress you out, so you’re constantly cleaning out your inbox.

12. You’re not surprised when someone calls you an “over-achiever.” You won “Most Likely to Succeed” in high school, after all. If you didn't, it's obviously because everyone else was just jealous.

13. Casual sports and games with friends can escalate, mostly because you have an intense competitive streak.

You may struggle every day, but at least Type A's know how to get stuff done.

14 Signs You're Addicted to Crime Shows

0
0

Crime shows are, in two words, absolutely addicting. Maybe it's the suspense, or maybe it's the fact that the detectives and analysts are just so attractive. Either way, crime shows are like potato chips: You can't ever watch just one. Once you've started watching one series, you've begun your downward spiral into Netflix binge-watching until you can't remember which medical examiner belongs on which series and you're secretly wondering if your obsession is going a little too far. It's not. Embrace it.

1. You’re still holding out for your one true love: Detective Stabler.

The definition of the perfect man.

2. Or maybe Aaron Hotchner.

Even though he hardly ever smiles.

3. Okay, okay, Dr. Spencer Reid.

So smart. So beautiful.

4. Forget being an astronaut - you want to be Olivia Benson when you grow up.

Because she is the queen of kicking butt and taking names.

5. You’re pretty positive that you could be a criminal profiler if you really put your mind to it.

Oh yeah. Easy peasy.

6. So when you first meet someone, you can’t help but wonder if he or she might be a sociopath.

Is it normal to ask your date if he has some unresolved tension with his mother?

7. Your family wonders if it’s healthy for you to sit in front of your computer watching hours of Law & Order: SVU.

Probably not.

8. You definitely have an opinion on which Law & Order is the best.

Whether you like plain ol'Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intentor Law & Order: SVU, your choice says a lot about you.

9. The same goes for CSI.

But everyone knows that it's not CSI: Miami.

10. You’ve figured out how all of the plotlines of these shows usually work.

You think you've got your perp? It's only been 20 minutes! You've got the wrong guy!

11. You know how hard it is to fall asleep after watching one too many episodes.

Just try to think happy thoughts. Just look at Stabler and Benson and how perfect they are.

12. You cried when your favorite characters left the series.

You're emotionally attached, okay?

13. You like to throw random legal jargon into casual conversation so that everyone knows you know the law and you’re not afraid to use it.

OVERRULED. SUSTAINED. PLEASE APPROACH THE BENCH.

14. Because you think that watching crime shows makes you an expert on crime.

And you are... sort of.

17. This moment...

18. And this one...

7 Drugstore Makeup Dupes for the Collegiette on a Budget

0
0

A trip to Sephora can make any collegiette feel like a kid in a candy store. With eye shadow galore, infinite rows of lipstick, and more blushes than our cheeks can handle, it’s a sparkly, color-coordinated heaven for our inner makeup artist. But when you hit the $50 mark two products in, this high-end makeup dream quickly becomes a nightmare for your wallet. Lucky for us, there are plenty of budget-friendly makeup alternatives for expensive brands. Every collegiette should be well versed in balling on a budget and looking good doing it. Here are seven drugstore dupes for your favorite products that will help you take it easy on your wallet and keep you looking fabulous.

1. Wet ’n Wild 5-Pan Palettes ($3.99 at CVS)

Urban Decay’s Naked Palettes have been hailed as the holy grail of neutral shadows in the makeup world. Retailing at $54 a pop, these gorgeous shadows will surely cost you. But don’t break your little piggy to splurge on these palettes just yet! Providing a much cheaper alternative, Wet ’n Wild’s 5-Pan Palette in The Naked Truth offers dupes for some of Naked 2’s neutrals. From its sheer beige to its deep, earthy brown, this 5-pan is all you need to create the perfect neutral take on a smoky eye. Though the shadows are already smooth and pretty pigmented for their cost, adding an eye shadow primer beneath them will bring out their shimmer and color even more. Perfect for makeup newbies, Wet ’n Wild palettes are even labeled, so you don’t have to worry about where to put each shadow. Talk about an added bonus! Say a prayer to the makeup gods and you may be able to find the Melrose at Night and Smoke and Melrose 5-pan palettes from the 2014 Fall Limited Edition collection. They include highly-pigmented dupes for the Naked 3 palette.

This tutorial will tell you everything about how to apply The Naked Truth for a sultry look that can take you from class to a night out!

2. Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balms ($9.49 at CVS)

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balms seem to have some competition in the world of lip crayons. Chubby Sticks retail at $17 and while they do have a cult following, Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balms put their Clinique equivalent to the test. These two products are nearly identical—even down to the packaging! But Revlon’s Balms have so much to offer, making them a dupe that stands strong against the high-end product. If there’s one thing dominating the makeup scene, it’s matte finishes. And that’s exactly what Revlon’s Matte Balms provide. The color payoff is to die for! While the Chubby Sticks apply with a shiny finish, Revlon’s product offers a matte texture that applies smoothly in just a few strokes. The pigmentation is incredible, proving that this lip crayon is a must-have. Putting the icing on the cake, Revlon’s Balms are moisturizing and have a minty fragrance. Be sure to try the ColorBurst Balm Stains ($9.29 at CVS) and Lacquer Balms ($9.49 at CVS) too! With this collection you can find just what you need, whether it’s a matte finish, a lip stain, or a high-shine gloss.

Check out this review of the Matte Balm collection.

3. e.l.f. Mineral Infused Face Primer ($6 at Target)

Next in this beauty faceoff is Smashbox’s $36 Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer. Its formula uses antioxidants to fill in pores so that you’re left with an even skin texture before applying your makeup. However, e.l.f. Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer gives Smashbox a run for its money. e.l.f.’s primer has a gel consistency similar to the Smashbox primer. Working just like its high-end counterpart, e.l.f.’s product provides a canvas for smooth makeup application. In fact, there are no obvious differences between the two primers after long wear (see for yourself in the review below). No need to pay an arm and a leg for the same results!

For a detailed comparison of the two primers, check out this full review.

4. Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner ($9.99 at CVS)

Gel eyeliner may be the greatest invention since sliced bread. With its sleek application, gel liner can help you achieve any look, from the classic cat eye to any chic liner work. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner weighs in at $25. Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliners do the same at over half the price! Maybelline’s gel is just as pigmented and waterproof as Bobbi Brown’s gel line. The only downside may be that Maybelline’s collection consists of four colored gels compared to Bobbi Brown’s 14 shades. Nevertheless, Maybelline still makes for an incredible dupe that holds its own when pit against Bobbi Brown.

Still skeptical? Check out this product smack down to see just how well Maybelline compares.

5. e.l.f Studio Blush ($3.00 at Target)

Back at it again, e.l.f graces budget-conscious makeup enthusiasts with yet another dupe! At $30 apiece, NARS blush can definitely put a strain on a collegiette’s budget. These blushes are known for their high pigmentation and radiant shimmer, but e.l.f. swoops in and shares the limelight with its Studio Blush collection. The NARS collection may be much larger, but several of those blushes have e.l.f. counterparts. The e.l.f. finish is more subtle against the skin compared to the shimmering NARS blush, but this dupe does hold its own. It’s as close as you can get at a whopping fraction of the cost!

To hear more about e.l.f.’s Studio Blush, take a look at this review.

6. Milani Color Statement Lipstick ($5.99 at CVS)

It’s definitely not easy to combat the reputation that MAC Cosmetics has built. With endorsements from the celebrity world it’s hard to knock their long list of lipsticks, ranging from $16 to $25. But Milani Color Statement Lipstick offers a great alternative. Lipstick enthusiasts went gaga over MAC’s Rebel, a midtonal plum. Milani countered with its Color Statement Lipstick in Sangria, its most popular MAC dupe. You’ll be surprised to find that they are practically identical. At such an affordable price, Milani proves to be a worthy adversary to MAC with its high pigmentation and moisturizing feel. It applies smoothly and only needs minimal touchups throughout the day. Plus, you’ll love its gorgeous, gold packaging! Study this lipstick guide for tips on rocking any Milani shade like a pro.

Check out this Milani lipstick review to see their amazing color payoff.

7. L’Oréal Voluminous Original Mascara ($5.89 at Target)

Just the right touch of boldness and volume on the lashes can complete any makeup look. Diorshow Iconic Mascara by Dior provides a high-end option at $28.50. L’Oréal Paris’s Voluminous Original Mascara in Carbon Black is the budget-friendly substitute. Proving the expensive product isn’t always better, Dior’s mascara actually has a stiffer consistency. While it does have a darker appearance on the lash, L’Oréal’s alternative applies much more smoothly. Ultimately, both mascaras give a similar voluminous finish; but at a much cheaper price, L’Oréal’s mascara is the better option.

Curious to see how well L’Oreal compares to Dior? Check out this full review.

Always remember, collegiettes: for every high-end product, there’s probably a much cheaper alternative ready to make it into to your makeup bag. A trip to Sephora may sweep you off of your feet, but a visit to your local drugstore can easily do the trick. Your bank account will thank you!

Soon, You'll Be Able to Get Hangover-Free Wine

0
0

How many times have you settled in to watch the latest episode of Scandal with your besties and had to forgo the wine because you just can't afford to show up to another 8 a.m. lecture hungover? Since the struggle is not yours alone, science has blessed us with a solution: hangover-free wine. Let's take a moment to bow down to the people who have made it their life's work to bring us this miracle.

Researchers at the University of Illinois have engineered a groundbreaking new yeast with genes that can be altered—basically, what that means for us is that wine can now be changed not only to help us lose those pounding morning-after headaches, but also to increase wine's health benefits or even enhance its taste.

"Wine, for instance, contains the healthful component resveratrol. With engineered yeast, we could increase the amount of resveratrol in a variety of wine by 10 times or more," lead researcher Yong-Su Jin noted in a press release. Sounds like a win-win to us!

This magical wine might not be available for purchase anytime soon, but at least we know it's in our futures. Olivia Popes of the world, rejoice!

Ever since watching Tangled, we've had one hair goal: for our locks to look like a shiny wave of touchable lusciousness. (Oh, and HOW does she not have split ends!? That would be nice to know, too.) While growing your hair out to be long enough to use as a ladder may be only a pipe dream (sigh), we've found some products to achieve the Disney-princess shine we've envied for as long as we can remember. And that will have to do until Rapunzel divulges her hairdresser's name!

1. Marc Anthony Oil Of Morocco Argan Oil Volume Shine Hairspray

Not only does the name of this hairspray ($8.99, ulta.com) sound luxurious, but the product is, too! This multi-tasking hairspray protects from humidity, holds your style all day long without stickiness and adds showstopping shine. Not to mention, it's sulfate-, paraben- and DEA-free!

2. Keratin Complex Infusion Keratin Replenisher

Shiny hair's biggest nemesis is dry, damaged hair. Dry, damaged hair's biggest nemesis is keratin. Treat your hair to a little TLC with this replenisher ($40, ulta.com) that protects hair from even your hottest heat tools.

3. Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil

Six oils pamper your locks throughout the day in this magical invisible oil ($39, sephora.com). Kiss flyaways goodbye and welcome smooth and silky hair with this product, which is recommended for daily use.

4. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo and Conditioner

It's good for you, too; it's formulated without all those must-avoid ingredients, like parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

9 Snacks You Don’t Need to Refrigerate or Cook

0
0

While some collegiettes have the luxury of living in apartment-style dorms complete with microwaves, refrigerators and full ovens, many of us are forced to make the cold trek down to the dining hall every time we want a snack, which is just the worst when it’s late or it’s too cold outside. By keeping a stash of appliance-free, non-spoiling snacks on your shelf, you can curb your hunger and keep yourself going between meals! Try keeping some of these great fridge-less treats on hand for easy, healthy snacking.

1. Dried Fruit

A busy week can leave you with rotten bananas and bruising apples that you were sure you would eat before they went bad. To ensure that you always have a fruity and sweet snack available, try keeping some dried fruit on hand!

Dried fruit won’t go bad and is just sweet enough to satisfy your dessert cravings.

However, beware of the sugarcoated look-a-likes and candied fruit that may masquerade as a healthy treat, and instead choose the natural, unsweetened and organic options. But even unsweetened dried fruit has more calories than fresh fruit, so keep your snack size portion to a handful or two. A quarter-cup serving of dried cherries has 130 calories with 32 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein. You can keep snack-sized portions in small Ziploc baggies so that you’re not tempted to keep reaching back into a big bag.

Nicole Gartside, a senior at NYU, suggests trying fruit leathers as an easy snack. Fruit leathers are a happy medium between dried fruit and gummy snacks, and Nicole says that they’re “just sweet enough to hit the spot. They come in so many different flavors and they don’t take up any room at all in your dorm!”

Stretch Island Fruit Co. makes all-natural fruit strips out of dried, pressed fruit puree (think healthy Fruit Roll-Ups!). One of these “Orchard Cherry” Fruit Strips has just 45 calories and 12 grams of carbohydrates, and it counts as half a serving of fruit.

2. Mixed Nuts

Just a handful of protein-packed nuts can keep your hunger at bay. Whether you prefer almonds, cashews, pistachios or peanuts, this snack can be perfect to keep on hand when you feel like you can’t quite make it until dinner. Raw, unsalted nuts are your best bet, but lightly salted or roasted nuts can help cure your salty-chip craving!

Nuts provide your body with essential healthy fats, but they do have a high caloric value, so be sure to limit your serving size. One quarter-cup of whole, plain almonds has 170 calories, 6 grams of carbs and 6 grams of protein. For proper portion control and a great on-the-go snack, try the 100 Calorie Packs from Blue Diamond --each pack has 3 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein. Throwing one of these mini packs in your bag in the morning can be just what you need to hold you over between classes!

Trail mix is an especially filling snack that can satisfy your salty, sweet and chocolaty cravings all in one bite. However, store-bought trail mixes are often loaded with extra salt or chocolate, so if you’d like a healthier variation, try making your own! Try out different nuts like almonds, peanuts, cashews and pistachios with your favorite dried fruit and dark chocolate bits (or skip the chocolate altogether if you have the willpower) until you find your perfect ratio. The nuts will fill you up with protein, while the fruit will give you the kick of energy you need to make it through your next class. Make a big batch and split it up into sandwich bags for portion control and perfect on-the-go snacking.

3. Granola Bars

Granola bars are the Holy Grail snacking option for collegiettes. The options are endless—whether you’re looking for something salty, nutty, fruity, sweet, crunchy or chewy, there is sure to be a brand for you.

Fruit-and-nut bars are an even healthier alternative, so check out the assortment of bars offered by KIND. The original Fruit & Nut Delight Bar has 17 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein in just 200 calories!

Not all granola bars are created equal, so look for bars with all-natural ingredients and few preservatives. Some good options are LARABARs and FiberLove bars. Because they’re pre-packaged, it’s easy to just throw a bar in your bag if you need a quick snack between classes to silence your growling stomach.

4. Popcorn

Throw away the greasy potato chips that used to be your late-night snack and grab a bag of pre-popped Skinny Pop or Boom Chicka Pop for a guilt-free snack that’s low in calories. The Original Skinny Pop Popcorn has 155 calories in a four-cup serving with 15 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein. Better yet, Skinny Pop offers 100-calorie bags for snacking on the go and easier portion control. Look for these healthy popcorn options, and you may find you like them even better than the butter-filled recipes offered by many microwavable popcorn brands!

5. Roasted Seaweed

You may not have expected to snack on seaweed, but when roasted with a little salt, this natural snack provides a great alternative to chips! These paper-thin snacks are perfect to munch on without making you feel weighed down.

The Roasted Seaweed Snacks from Trader Joe’s offer 2 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein in only 60 calories per package! Eating your greens has never tasted so good.

6. Wasabi Peas

If you’re struggling to get your daily dose of vegetables while at school, trying snacking on them during the day! Wasabi peas are perfect if you’re looking to spice up your snack routine, so try picking up a bag next time you’re at the store.

One quarter-cup serving of Trader Joe’s Wasabi Peas contains 4 grams of protein, 19 grams of carbs and 120 calories. Because these peas are wasabi-coated, be careful not to overindulge. Luckily, the peas are so spicy you probably couldn’t eat the whole bag in one sitting!

7. Healthy Crackers

Natural and organic crackers can be a great way to fill up when you need something crunchy to snack on. While cheesy and super-salty options might be appealing, choose organic, multigrain alternatives. Mary’s Gone Crackers are organic and vegan, and they don’t contain dairy, gluten or trans fats. A 13-cracker serving of the original flavor has only 140 calories, 21 grams of carbs and 3 grams of protein.

For added protein and extra flavor, top your crackers with peanut butter or almond butter. Luckily, peanut butter and almond butter are both fridge-less, so they’re perfect to keep in your room to jazz up your favorite snack. Two tablespoons of Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut Butter have 140 calories, 7 grams of protein and 6 grams of carbohydrates.

8. Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans

For a sweet treat when the coffee shop feels too far away, try keeping dark-chocolate-covered espresso beans in your room. Sophie Dodd, a junior at Middlebury College, likes to keep couple of these espresso beans in her room for late-night studying. Just a few of these can satisfy your sweet tooth and give you the extra energy you need; each bean contains about 8 mg of caffeine.

If you don’t have a coffee machine in your room and the campus coffee shop is too far of a hike, these coffee treats are the perfect boost. Because they’re coated in chocolate, treat these beans as a dessert and only consume them in moderation—after a few of these, you won’t need that dining-hall brownie you’ve been craving all day!

9. Dry Cereal

Though milk and cereal seems to be the perfect breakfast, a few handfuls of dry cereal can also be a great midday snack. The flavor possibilities are endless, but we suggest trying Special K Original or Kashi GOLEAN cereal as your new favorite snack.

Kashi GOLEAN is high in fiber and protein if you’re looking for a filling and nutritious snack. Both cereals are low in fat, and a few handfuls are perfect to snack on throughout the day. Keeping small sandwich bags on hand is a great way to make this an on-the-go snack, so scoop a few handfuls of your favorite cereal into a Ziploc bag and keep it with you to munch on throughout the day!

Whether your campus has dropped to negative temperatures or your walk to the dining hall is just too daunting in the middle of the day, keeping non-spoiling snacks on hand ensures that you won’t be caught hungry. Try these and more healthy snack ideas from Her Campus and toss the potato chips and chocolate bars in the trash!

What Your Coffee Choice Says About You

0
0

We each know our Starbucks order by heart, but what does that 10-second blurb of words - "extra,""shot,""half," or "caf" - really say about you? (Other than that you're willing to spend five dollars on some jitter-inducing, whipped-cream-covered, essentially-all-chocolate drink.)

Black Coffee: Wise

You truly appreciate coffee for what it is. You laugh in the face of the legging-clad frappucino drinkers. "Oh, java chip... I remember those days." You turn your nose up at the young folks sipping strawberry-flavored cream through a straw. Like your drink of choice, you are somewhat bitter at the others for their bravery in ordering more flamboyant drinks. But through and through, you will sip your dark roast, embrace that resulting buzz, and continue to subtly brag about how you have taken it black since the mere age of 15.

Frappuccino: Brave

You can't quite meet the barista's eyes when you order your drink, and when she finally yells, "Caramel frappuccino for Sarah," you grab your drink and make haste for the exit before the entire Starbucks crowd has a chance to judge you for the calorie-per-cent drink you just shelled out five dollars for (you like to avoid doing the math). But once you step outside that forest-green haven of hipsters and scones, you rejoice. For it is just you and your frap. And we all know, deep down, that the sweet taste of a frappuccino is worth each disapproving glare, and each godforesaken cent you just spent.

Mocha: Sweet

A little bit of sugar helps the medicine go down, amirite? That's your motto everytime you walk into Starbucks, and it's also justification for your mocha. Bitter drinks and bitter attitudes are just not your thing. And hey, when has chocolate ever hurt anyone? You say shots, shots, shots, everybody! Flavor shots, that is.

Espresso: Fierce

When it comes to caffeine, you don't fool around. You want it to work like magic. You are Sirius about coffee. One shot of espresso, and it's as though you were put under a spell of alertness.

Latte: Basic

You have no shame in your order. You march your spirit-jersey-clad self up to the counter and confidently order your regular. The perfectly balanced concoction of espresso and steamed milk are much like your perfectly-balanced personality: hovering between narcissistic and humble. The only time your drink order is a problem is when the barista calls, "Grande latte for Kelly," and four different brunettes in Tory Burch flats go up to grab it, including you.

Iced Coffee: Laid-back

Much like your drink, you're chill. You waltz into the coffee shop and patiently wait in line to order your iced beverage. When it's ready, you slyly shake around the ice cubes and sip until your temperature matches your mindset: cool

No matter what your drink of choice is, behind all the hissing machines, sugary syrups and barista judgment lies a fact: coffee is to be enjoyed. So do yo thang.

8 Cool Jobs You Can Get With an English Major

0
0

“Oh, you’re an English major? So you’re going to be a teacher, right?”

Maybe you are an English major with the hopes of becoming a teacher, but maybe not! Wherever there is communication—whether it’s in the form of speeches, presentations, commercials, print ads, podcasts, broadcasts, instructions, brochures, press releases, newspapers, magazines or books—there is a need for people to create, edit and revise that content. And that’s where you come in, English majors!

To find out what opportunities are out there for collegiettes studying English, we spoke to Rochelle Sharit, a career planning manager at Northeastern University’s business school, and Deanna Rodin, associate director of Hofstra University’s career center. If your love of linguistics and literature has inspired you to choose an English major, here are a few careers available to you.

1. B2B content writer

What it is: B2B marketing, or business-to-business marketing, is used for one business to sell goods or services to another business (as opposed to businesses selling something to a consumer). A growing number of B2B clients are interacting with companies through social networking channels, such as Twitter, blogs and LinkedIn, and someone has to capture the interest of those customers through well-written content.

Why your English degree is valuable: With a little business and social media expertise, your English major can take you far in the world of B2B marketing. “As an English major, students can apply their writing skills to many business positions if they are motivated to learn the business or technical side of the role,” Sharit says. “For B2B content, [applicants should] understand the business benefits provided by the product to help make the sale.”

If you have a knack for strategizing and marketing, strong writing skills will help you flourish in B2B content writing.

2. Editor

What it is: Editors plan, coordinate and revise material for publication in books, newspapers, magazines or websites. They review story ideas and edit drafts, deciding what will appeal to readers the most.

Why your English degree is valuable: Editors must ensure that all written content is free of grammatical or spelling errors, so strong language skills are a must! As Rodin points out, “A major in English expands your vocabulary, enriches your ability to express ideas, teaches you to make complex material more palatable and trains you to become an efficient and effective communicator.” Writing skills are also important, as editors should be able to express ideas clearly and logically.

3. Paralegal or legal assistant

What it is: Paralegals do a variety of tasks in order to support lawyers, such as maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research and drafting documents. They may work in any field of law and may support a single lawyer or a large group of attorneys. TheAmerican Bar Association maintains a list of accredited paralegal programs.

Why your English degree is valuable: Paralegals must be able to document and present their research to their supervising attorneys, so speaking and writing skills are essential. Your English training will also have developed your critical thinking, research, citation and writing skills, which you’ll need in a legal profession. Your education will also need to include computer skills and the basics of American government and legal research, but your English degree is a great start!

4. Technical writer

What it is: Technical writers produce instruction manuals and other supporting documents to communicate complex information more easily. They also distribute technical information to customers, designers and manufacturers. Experience with a technical subject, such as computer science, Web design or engineering, can help.

Why your English degree is valuable: According to Sharit, technical writers must be able to “learn the product side to communicate to the reader of a technical manual.”  In order to take that difficult-to-understand information and translate it for colleagues and consumers who have nontechnical backgrounds, an English major’s communication skills are a must. Technical writers must be able to think about a product in a way a person without technical experience would think about it.

5. Journalist

What it is: Journalists inform the public about news and events happening internationally, nationally and locally. They can report the news for newspapers, magazines, websites, television or radio.

Why your English degree is valuable: Solid, effective communication skills cannot be overrated, especially in the field of journalism. “Yes, you might argue that all college students, despite their major, are taught communication skills,” Rodin says. “However, it is our English majors who perfect it.” Journalists need to be able to report news in writing, so strong writing skills are necessary!

6. SEO Content Writer

What it is: SEO (search engine optimization) content writing is a process of creating optimized web content to target specific audiences. Every website has a specific target audience and requires a different type and level of content, and it is the job of the SEO content writer to produce content that is relevant and searchable.

Why your English degree is valuable: Though social media skills are a must, “applicants need to learn strategies of using social media tools to draw customers to the company website,” Sharit says. To raise a page’s ranking and content relevancy for search engine hits, content has to be well written. SEO content writers are essentially professional bloggers who write with a specific client in mind, so great writing skills are necessary to create website content that will boost the company’s page rank.

7. Copywriter

What it is: Copywriting is essentially the bridge between creative writing and advertising. It involves proofreading and editing copy, creating ads, writing digital and print copy and taking part in social media campaigns.

Why your English degree is valuable: When it comes to sending a message, no one can do it better than an English major. “Every company or organization needs to communicate something to someone,” Rodin says. “An English major can help fill that role. There is more need than ever, with an increase in the use of social media and with an abundance of information available, to be clear and concise, yet interesting.”

Every business, big and small, utilizes a creative department, and your English major will give you the creativity you need to stand out from other applicants.

8. PR writer

What it is: PR, or public relations, is the strategic, marketing-based field that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and the public. PR writers create company newsletters, press releases and content for social media. The writer’s responsibilities include media relations, publicity and reputation management of an organization.

Why your English degree is valuable: Since PR requires you to be a mediator between the public and your organization, strong oral and communication skills are important. PR also requires a strong background in research, problem solving and reading comprehension—all skills you’ll have acquired from your English studies.

Lucky for you English majors, you’re able to utilize several skills that work well within today's demanding business world. “There are a plethora of job opportunities where writing is highly valued, but almost none are done in isolation,” Sharit says. “To make yourself a strong candidate, combine your writing skills with something more by either learning on your own or through courses. Otherwise, demonstrate your flexibility and curiosity in learning new skills.” Expand your repertoire, and the number of jobs available to you will open up as well.

While these positions may not lead to writing the next great American novel, combining your creative mind with an entrepreneurial spirit can give you a career you may have never imagined—and one that shock all those people who told you a liberal arts major wasn’t practical!

The 10 On-Screen Collegiettes That You Can Find On Campus

0
0

No matter where you go to school, there are certain types of collegiettes you see on every campus. Maybe that’s why we love (or love to hate) their on-screen counterparts! Be on the lookout for these ladies on campus—you’re bound to meet them somewhere).

1. Fat Amy (Pitch Perfect)

The name’s Amy, Fat Amy. No seriously, that is what she wants you to call her. She is the friend who will scream your name from across the dining hall to alert you that there is only one more of your favorite sandwich left so you’d better come and get it. Some people might find her a bit too blunt for their taste, but if you need a reality check, she’s got your back. There is never a dull moment with Fat Amy in your group and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Where can you find her?

While you will probably never catch a glimpse of Fat Amy on an elliptical or treadmill at the campus gym, there is a very good chance that she will be at an a capella rehearsal, and she might just be running horizontally.

2. Natalie (The House Bunny)

Natalie is the girl you don’t see yourself being friends with initially because of her out-there, hard-to-grasp personality, but as soon as you get to know her you hit it off because, after all, what’s not to love about an energetic, go-getter BFF? Since she isn’t afraid to put it all on the line for her bestie, you know that she won’t flake on you even if there is a 95 percent chance that whatever you have plans to do is probably not going to end well for either one of you.

Where can you find her?

Natalie’s super excitable personality, high energy and desire to be involved would more than likely lead her to a leadership position that would allow her to showcase her spirit and inspire others to be just as eager to take on the world as she is. If you stop by the New Students office, it is a definite possibility that she’ll be there, training to be an orientation leader.

3. Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Buffy is just your average bubbly, personable, fun-loving college student with the exception that in her spare time, she slays monsters (while the rest of us are watching Netflix). While you could let this minor detail freak you out, you should consider the possibilities of having a supernatural friend. If you are still Team Edward, the two of you might disagree on some things, but other than that you would probably get along just fine.

Where can you find her?

Buffy’s outgoing personality and obvious superhuman strength makes her the perfect athlete. All of the kicking she does while fending off vampires probably translates very nicely on the soccer field. When she isn't on the field herself you will more than likely find her cheering your school’s team to victory.

4. Sydney White (Sydney White)

Sydney is your typical guy’s girl. It’s not that she doesn’t enjoy a girls’ night out or a chick flick every now and then, but she prefers the low-drama, feud-free setting that comes with hanging out with the guys. She is immune to the weird antics of boys, but despite her disinclination to be a “perfect little lady” guys fall for her left and right. Her charm lies in the fact that she doesn't even have to try to be a laid-back, fun person that everyone wants to hang out with.

Where can you find her?

If there is a sporting event going on, there is a very good chance that Sydney will be there surrounded by her best guy friends and yelling at the referee for the terrible call he just made.

5. Rory Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)

Those who don’t know her would describe her as quiet and shy. However, those who she surrounds herself with know her to be quick-witted,sarcastic and highly opinionated. She will be the listener to your talker, but still able to offer you some of the best pieces of advice that you have ever heard.

Where can you find her?

For Rory, there are always stories to be told and deadlines to be met. She lives to be a journalist, and it is fairly difficult to tear her away from the newsroom when she is in the midst of writing a story. On occasion you might be able to find her on a break from the newsroom… but only to pick up the latest edition of the paper.

6. Allie Hamilton (The Notebook)

Allie is the best friend who’ll willingly come over and talk out your problems with you over a gallon of ice cream—even if you call her at three in the morning. You’ll have to be willing to do the same because there is that boy back home you keep hearing about whom she just cannot seem to get over.

Where can you find her?

You’ll find Allie at the next sorority council meeting because she is probably the president. Her kind heart and infectious personality make fellow students feel at ease around her and she just epitomizes the strength and bond of sisterhood. She is the queen bee who gets work done, but doesn’t have to step on anyone’s toes in the process.

7. Annie Edison (Community)

Although she is young, she is fierce. Annie is the quintessential overachiever. She, unlike you, finishes her papers before the day they are due and goes to every early morning class with a smile and a can-do attitude. She has enough motivation for the both of you, and that is exactly the kind of person that you need in your life.

Where can you find her?

You know those people who you can practically envision moving pieces of furniture into the library because they’re there so often? Annie is definitely one of those collegiettes. The night before a big exam you can find her in her favorite spot in the library poring over lecture notes and textbooks because academics are a top priority and sleep is for the weak.

8. Rachel Berry (Glee)

Is she a bit bossy? Yes. Is she sometimes overly stubborn? Yes. Will she be the most loyal friend you will ever have? Probably so. Rachel definitely has a tough outer shell, but once you break through it she will be there for you through thick and thin. Even if she is in the middle of a Broadway performance she will still probably let you hide out in her dressing room until she has the time to talk to you during intermission.

Where can you find her?

At the theater belting out a song for the next big production. As far as Rachel is concerned the show must and will go on. There is never a time when Rachel Berry does not deem it suitable to be devoting herself to her art. If you want to catch up with her all you need to do is purchase tickets to her next performance.

9. Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl)

There are always those friends whose names seem interconnected as if they were one entity. Without Blair there is no Serena, and without Serena there is no Blair. They are the best friends that each will ever have, and pretty much the entire school spends a good portion of their time following that friendship through its ups and downs, living vicariously through them as they enjoy their fabulous lives.

Where can you find them?

Everywhere. These are the girls who, no matter where they go or what they are doing, they know everyone and everyone knows them. They are not strangers to any place or anyone. It’s their campus, you just go to classes there.

10. Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)

Ever preppy, ever sociable, Elle Woods is the perfect combination of ditzy and brilliant. Every girl needs that gal pal who will not only make sure she is not wearing last season’s Prada shoes, but can also make sure she knows the difference between mala in se and mala prohibita for an upcoming criminal justice exam.

Where can you find her?

Elle Woods is not a slacker, nor is she a quitter. You will find her in the first row of any lecture with her pink, sparkly pen in hand ready to be the best student that she can be. However, Elle is also not one to tolerate getting bored. If the lecture hits a dry patch, she will not hesitate to scroll through Pinterest until it is once again deserving of her attention.

Whether you’re a Blair, a Rory or a Rachel, there’s an on-screen collegiette just like you. See you on campus!

Allow the cool snakeskin print on the bikini top to peek through from underneath a sheer top. It'll show off the hardware and strap detailing on the bikini, but still keep you covered up enough to go out in public. Add some distressed jeans and motorcycle boots to up the edgy vibe of the outfit, and find a bright bag that matches the bikini to bring out its color.

Just imagine wearing this outfit while you’re riding a bike to get ice cream on a sunny spring afternoon… the big bow detailing on the top of this one piece is super fun and girly. With some bright red shorts, the look is the perfect balance of nautical and preppy. To take this outfit from the beach to the streets, throw on some white sneakers, a straw hat, classic sunglasses and a neutral cross body bag.

Channel Khloe Kardashian with a graphic one-piece and high-waist denim cutoffs. We know she’d wear this with Timberland boots, dark sunglasses and gold hoop earrings. A flannel tied around your waist can double as another layer if need be.

Another celeb-inspired look, this one is all Taylor Swift; we love her ’50s pin-up style. Emulate her classic look with similar pieces... throw in a bustier bandeau bikini top! The black piping on the top goes great with a plain black circle skirt, and the lavender Ked’s are almost a perfect match to the top. To take the old-school look even further, do a bright red lip and dramatic cat eye sunglasses.

Cropped tank style bikini tops are becoming really popular this year. They’re part crop top, part bathing suit, so it’s the ideal piece to rock on the daily. The leather detailing on this top looks cool and sleek when paired with leather pants. Try it with a jacket, like this sporty gray varsity jacket, when wearing this look. Finish the outfit off with a graphic beanie and chunky black sandals.

It's always a disaster when you buy a dress that turns out to be so sheer that you need to wear a tank or slip under. Take advantage of this misfortune and use it as a chance to show off your newest swimsuit! A white sheer dress with a dark strapless one-piece looks super chic. Keep the look interesting with a glitzy necklace, black fringe purse and knee-high gladiator sandals.

We love this scalloped bikini from Marysia. There’s no reason this bathing suit should only see the sun when it's beach or pool time. Wear it under a half-unbuttoned white oxford shirt to show off its cute design, without showing too much skin. Maintain the girly look of the swimsuit through out your whole outfit by adding light pink pants, bow sandals, a mint bag and pearls.

A tank top with low-cut armholes is a great opportunity to show off your new bikini top instead of just having your bra showing. This top shows off the caging thanks to its loose fit. The tie in the front is a casual detail, as are the cuffs on cargo shorts. Accessorize the outfit with pieces like black Vans and unique friendship bracelets.

10. Ruffled Bandeau

Swimsuit 10

Bikini tops with ruffles are kind of tricky to layer under other shirts, who why not just wear it by itself? When wearing just a bandeau like, it’s essential to balance out the bottom half of your outfit accordingly, like this high-waist tea-length skirt. The vibrant blue in the top and green in the skirt can make even the slightest tan look like a deep bronze. Pair them with a big straw hat, nude wedges and an equally vibrant red clutch for an outfit that really pops.

Would you try wearing your fave bikini in your everyday outfit, collegiettes?
