Finals week is almost upon us, collegiettes—and with finals week comes endless cups of coffee, bags under our eyes, and tons of stress—but this doesn’t mean your style has to suffer! It can be tempting to spend the week in your snuggly, lived-in college sweatshirt, so why not keep your style game going strong (while staying totally comfy) by styling it to look just as chic as you have all semester? With just a few simple tricks, you can amp up any of your basic college sweatshirts—below, we show you how!

1. Dress it up with a skirt

Thought you couldn’t wear your favorite sweatshirt and still look super put-together? Wrong—your college sweatshirt can look just as chic as a sophisticated fall sweater! The trick to making this look work is to go for a skirt that has a no-nonsense, simple shape. We like a neutral grey plaid to compliment a colorful school sweatshirt. To up the comfort factor, add tights layered with snuggly knit socks and a beanie on top to finish the look.

Black Check Mini Skirt ($47 at River Island)

Hailey Jeans Co Combat Boots ($44.99 at Target)

Waffle Knit Beanie ($6.80 at Forever 21)

Classic Opaque Tights ($5.90 at Forever 21)

Shimmery Cable Knit Boot Socks ($12.95 at American Eagle)

2. Trade sweats for boyfriend jeans

During finals week, you’ll want to throw on a comfy pair of sweatpants with your sweatshirt—but why not stay just as comfortable with the effortless-chic look of distressed boyfriend jeans instead? Add layers to the top of the outfit by throwing on a checked menswear-style shirt underneath your crewneck college sweatshirt for the perfect preppy-chic look. Top it off with a simple black statement necklace and Chelsea boots to dress it up, and you’re ready to take on even the toughest of finals in style.

Flannel Ex-Boyfriend Shirt in Buffalo Check ($80 at Madewell)

Kia Ribbon Tie Statement Necklace ($10 at Boohoo)

Dylan Ripped Boyfriend Jeans ($58.98 at Missguided)

ASOS ROAR Chelsea Ankle Boots ($72.01 at ASOS)

3. Layer it up

Create the perfect casual-chic vibe by topping your sweatshirt with a leather jacket. Leather (or faux leather!) is the perfect way to add a touch of luxe to a simple sweatshirt. Have a chilly walk to your exams or to the library? A chunky knit infinity scarf is a great way to keep warm and add to the layered look. Keep it casual in grey distressed skinnies and classic high top sneakers for a look that is effortless and easy to throw on.

Quilted Vegan Leather Moto Jacket ($100 at American Eagle)

Topshop Moto Jamie Ripped High Rise Ankle Jeans ($70 at Nordstrom)

Aerie Open Knit Circle Scarf ($29.95 at American Eagle)

Converse Chuck Taylor Classic ($55 at Converse)

With a few simple tricks, you can stay chic and enjoy the comfort of your coziest sweatshirt!

How Girls Study for Finals

You plan on pulling an all-nighter for your final tomorrow, which means you need to pregame your study session with a ton of caffeine.

Now that you're hyped, you think your study sesh is going to go something like this:

But after zooming through a few pages in your textbook, you realize you can’t recall anything you've read.

And when you do process the material, you realize it's incredibly boring and say:

But then your study buddy calls you out:

And you're like:

But most of the tabs on your browser are online shopping websites.

And since you and your friend are working in your room, it's tempting to go sit on your bed…(where you could take a nap, but just a short one!).

Once you’re in your cozy pile of blankets, getting back on track is a struggle.

The only thing that can wake you up now is a midnight snack.

But you pass on pizza delivery because you don't want to pick up the phone and there's already a box of Pop-Tarts sitting in your room.

After another half an hour of lounging around, you manage to crank out a few pages of notes at 200 WPM to make yourself feel productive.

But when you read what you wrote, you’re like:

So you ask your friend:

She helps you out and you “study” for a few more hours until your brain can’t hold any more information.

On your way to your final the next day, you're feeling confident...

...until you see people crawl straight out of the library, like:

So you start panicking about if there were chapters you forgot to study.

But your test is in 10 minutes and there is no time to review.

So instead, you calculate the lowest possible score you need to maintain your current letter grade,

And trust that the curve will give you enough of a boost.

Because at this point, worrying is useless.

So you embrace the fact that you don't know a lot of the material.

Because chances are you aren't even going to use your major in the real world.

Here's to the rest of finals week! Good luck, collegiettes!

Girl Scout Cookie Sales Are Going Digital

Thanks to the fact that they've been around for nearly century now, Girl Scout Cookies have become an irreplaceable icon of American food culture. Many will unwaveringly declare them to be the most delicious food to ever walk this planet (and we totally do, too). You’ve probably bickered with your friends about whether Samoas or Thin Mints are the best and you most definitely perk up if you hear that a troop is selling them in your neighborhood (who are we kidding? You already know when and where they're being sold). Now, you'll be able to order your cookies online!

Since the birth of this phenomenon over a century ago, everything relating to the addictive treats has changed. We’ve witnessed everything from new box designs to to new varieties that were sugar-free (we’ll spare you our opinion of those). But the biggest shake-up is about to hit us all: Girl Scouts are getting with the times by going digital!

For the first time ever, you’ll be able buy your favorite variety without having to leave your dorm or even open your door to salesgirls. The newly approved program, fittingly named Digital Cookie, will operate through individual council websites and a mobile app. When it comes to the website, Girl Scouts will have their own pages and have the power to allow their customers online access. In other words, we hope you know a Girl Scout, because it sounds like it may be invite-only!

If you’re already whipping out your credit card, ready to snap up your fave cookies, we hate to break it to you, but you may have to wait. The program will operate only in a limited number of areas this month, while the nationwide launch will take place in January. Start counting down the days!

And for those who still enjoy conversing with the adorable budding entrepreneurs, rest assured that the original business model of selling face-to-face will remain intact. You'll still see your favorite Girl Scouts out and about!

We don’t know about you, but we're beyond psyched for the national program launch next year! We just hope the organization can keep up with demand. Which will you order first, collegiettes?!

How to Deal When You’re Crushing on Your Best Friend’s Boyfriend

$
0
0

You never meant to fall for him, but he’s so hot. Plus, you guys are constantly trading witty banter, and he gives you these looks like he’s Kanye and you’re Kim… but he’s your best friend’s boyfriend.

What was that? Oh, just the screeeech! of some massive mental brakes.

Being attracted to your best friend’s boyfriend is definitely in the Top 10 Trickiest Life Situations list. That’s why we’ve talked to the experts to determine exactly how you should proceed — because handling this the wrong way could make your friendship disappear faster than Britney Spears’s hair circa 2007.

How could this happen?

It’s actually pretty understandable why you might become attracted to your best friend’s other half. After all, you and your friend get along really well, and she and her boyfriend get along really well, so by the transitive property of romance, you and the boyfriend probably get along really well, too.

“If you and your best friend are very similar, you might have very similar tastes,” says Dr. Patrick Wanis, a human behavior and relationship expert. “You’re probably best friends because you have a lot in common, you have similar temperaments — and you could have similar taste in men.”

Plus, your best friend’s boyfriend is always around, so you have ample time to notice his sexy smile or awesome sense of humor. Dr. Wanis explains that the more time we spend with someone, the greater the chance of us falling for him or her. “Attraction occurs by bonding, and bonding occurs from doing things together and being together,” he says.

So being attracted to your best friend’s BF doesn’t make you evil — or even a bad friend. But there’s definitely a right way and a wrong way to handle the situation.

Assess the sticky situation

How you react all depends on two things. First, how important is your relationship with your best friend? If you care deeply about her (which you probably do, hence the best friendship), then it’s in your best interests to move on.

“I would suggest not acting on your feelings,” says Kim Olver, a licensed clinical professional counselor and author of Secrets of Happy Couples. “We can develop [romantic] feelings for many people in our lives, but friendships with our female friends usually last a really long time.”

The second thing to consider is how your best friend’s boyfriend has been acting. In other words, has he been innocently treating you like a good friend, or has he been flirting with you and acting like you’re more than just platonic?

If the attraction is one-sided

If it seems that the feelings are going one way — from you to him — the next steps are relatively simple: The experts say you’re going to have to perform a one-sided breakup. No one but you will know you’re ending your “relationship” with this guy, for obvious reasons.

This requires some finesse — usually, when trying to move on, you sing lots of T Swift songs, delete him on Facebook and practice the “out of sight, out of mind” approach. While Taylor will always have your back (and your broken heart), it would probably confuse your best friend and her BF if you refused to see him and/or blocked him on all social media channels.

“It was really difficult to move on from my best friend’s BF,” says collegiette Anna*. “My friend was, of course, always talking about him and always wanted him around.”

So you’ll have to get creative. Try telling your best friend you want to give them more “couple time” and you’d rather hang out with her solo. Vent your feelings to your mom, write in a journal or compose a letter you’ll never send. We’d advise not telling any of your other friends the situation, because this is one secret you can’t afford to let spread.

If the attraction is mutual

But what if he’s giving you reason to think he shares your interest?

“That’s a really complex situation, because you have two people that are attracted to each other, but you’re both betraying your best friend,” Dr. Wanis says.

You may be tempted to tell him that you’re into him and see where things go. However, there are only a couple possible consequences, and none of them are ideal.

If he breaks up with your best friend, you’ve just betrayed her for a guy. On the other hand, if he doesn’t break up with your best friend but says he likes you too, now there are two people being led on. And if he tells you his flirting didn’t mean a thing, you’ll have jeopardized your relationship with your friend for nothing.

You might see what we’re getting at. Even if you think he’s sending little mental hearts your way, pursuing him is even worse idea than making a sequel to The Hangover (which, let’s be honest, was a really, really bad idea).

“I actually went after my bestie’s guy, and it ended terribly,” says collegiette Kirsten*. “He told her what I had said, she got super pissed, and now neither of them talk to me.”

If you need more help convincing yourself to back off, look at it this way: Do you really want to be with the type of guy who falls for his girlfriend’s best friend? That’s Etch-A-Sketch sketchy. You can do better!

“I always say, ‘Trust the person that you’re dealing with,” Olver says. “When I say trust, I’m not using the usual, stereotypical meaning. Trust this person to be who they’re showing him or herself to be. If he’s flirting with you while he’s in a relationship, he’ll probably do the same to you, because that’s who he’s showing himself to be.”

The next choice, however, isn’t so black and white.

Telling your best friend — or not

If he’s giving you butterflies through no fault of his own (i.e., just being a nice guy), the experts say letting your best friend in on your one-sided crush is probably a bad idea.

“I’m all about being honest, but sometimes you need to be selectively honest,” Dr. Wanis says.

However, there’s definitely a case for telling your best friend that her boyfriend may be unfaithful. After all, she deserves to know that kind of information, regardless with what she may do with it. But before you decide to spill the beans, gauge how inappropriate her SO has been. If he’s just flirting, you may be better off avoiding his company and not saying anything to your best friend.

“The only reason I’d suggest saying something is if she asks why you’re not hanging out with them anymore,” Dr. Wanis says. “If she says, ‘Why aren’t you hanging out with John? Every time I bring him along you won’t come. Don’t you like him?’ Then you respond, ‘I do like John, but I think you guys should spend time together on your own.’”

What if things have gone further — like you’ve openly discussed your mutual attraction or kissed? In that case, Dr. Wanis advises telling your friend ASAP.

“If it comes out later and you didn’t say anything, the friendship will be ruined,” he says. “Tell her, ‘It will never happen again, and I want you to know because I care about you and I treasure our friendship.’”

There’s a good chance your best friend will be pretty pissed. But if she’s a keeper — and we’re guessing she is — being honest with her is more important than avoiding her anger.

Olver also recommends trying to view the experience as a learning process.

“Instead of focusing on the loss of a potential relationship, focus on what it has shown you about life, relationships and yourself,” she says. “Ask, ‘What am I looking for in a relationship? What are some traits and characteristics from this person that I like?’”

The knowledge will make finding your next relationship (hopefully with a single person) that much easier.

Getting over your best friend’s boyfriend will be hard, especially since you won’t be able to tell her about it. But try to remember that your friendship should take priority over a guy, especially if the feelings only go one way. Plus, we know two guys who are definitely available: Ben and Jerry.

We’ve all heard that three’s a crowd. Unfortunately, there isn’t a super-happy ending when you’re attracted to your best friend’s boyfriend. Your best bet is stay out of his way and try to move on. If you need to tell your best friend that’s something’s gone down, then put on your big-girl stilettos and do it. Whatever your circumstances, good luck, and may the next guy you fall for be single!

7 Reasons Why Winter is the Absolute Worst

$
0
0

As that cool winter breeze makes its way in and pushes out the crisp autumn air, only one thought comes to mind: Winter sucks. Sure, there are the perks of Christmas, snow and pumpkin spice/peppermint lattes galore. But other than that, it’s a never-ending cycle of being cold, attempting to get warm and being cold again. Here's why winter is the absolute worst.

1. It’s cold.

This may seem pretty obvious, but we often forget what cold is really like until it’s the middle of December and we’re on our way to class, questioning whether or not our toes are entering the early stages of hypothermia.

2. After New Year's, there's nothing to look forward to.

There’s no denying it: Winter is definitely a top contender for the best holidays. But they come and go, we get our presents, we drink our champagne - and then we go back to being absolutely miserable until spring rolls around.

3. No one looks cute in a winter coat.

Legitimately no one. Walking around in a coat that makes you look like the Michelin Man cannot be fixed by a cute scarf or a trendy hat. Our bodies have zero shape, and we look like a bunch of marshmallows waddling down the street. Warmth > beauty.

4. Ice.

For those of us who weren't gifted with good coordination, winter is essentially our worst enemy. Black ice is like a shady little trickster who's personally out to ruin your day. You thought you were safe, didn’t you? You weren’t. Butt, meet ground. Enjoy slipping and sliding your whole way to class.

5. Slush.

You thought ice was bad?! LOL. Slush is equally as slippery, but it gets you absolutely soaked with dirty, melting snow that’s probably filled with gravel and who knows what else. Winter weather overall is just the bane of our existence.

6. Trying to stay warm is next to impossible.

Heat is expensive, and most of us do not have the luxury of footing the bill to keep the house above 70 degrees all winter. Instead, we wander around our apartments in full outside gear, pretending there’s nothing weird about making Easy Mac in a winter coat and gloves. Not to mention, any time we’re driving somewhere, it somehow takes the same exact amount of time to get to our destination as it does for our car to finally heat up. How convenient...

7. Hello, being pale for four-plus months.

Fall still allows us to hold on to those last few days of summer with our fading, sun-kissed skin. But come winter, it’s Casper the Friendly Ghost 24/7. Unless you go tanning or are lucky enough to not be confined to the artic tundra that is most of the world during winter, you just have to accept that for several months you’re going to be so pale that you’re essentially translucent.

Winter isn’t all bad, though. It definitely has its perks, like being cuddled up on the couch drinking hot chocolate and listening to holiday music. But aside from those few moments of relishing in the beauty of the season, winter is a relentless beast that comes out of its cave every year just to torment us.

Ask a Collegiette: De-Stressing During the College Application Process

$

Are you a smart and savvy pre-collegiette looking for answers to some of your most personal questions about college? You know, the ones about boys, classes, roommates and parties that your school’s guidance office can’t help you with? Jen is here to answer those questions! Whatever your concern, she’ll do her best to help you so you can make sure you don’t just survive college, but rock it!

How did you manage to de-stress during the college application process? – Jordan

Jordan,

I know how stressful the college application process can be, but take comfort in knowing it’s going to be totally worth it once you receive your first acceptance letter—the one in the big envelope!

I think what I found to be most helpful during the college application process was to take each application one at a time and step by step. This will keep your stress levels low because you’ll be able to focus all of your time and attention on one specific school. Once you do this, you’ll be able to cater your answers accordingly and have more time to proofread in order to increase your chances of being accepted. You should also look into using the Common App, which is one application you can use to apply to multiple schools that request the same type of information. As sweet as this sounds, only so many schools use the Common App, so double check to see if the colleges you want to apply to use it in order to prevent any added stress!

Next, try setting up a reward system for yourself. After you apply to a certain number of schools, treat yourself to something you enjoy, such as a cute new pair of shoes or some delish froyo with friends. Doing so with keep you motivated to finish the rest of your applications and will put a smile on your face, too. Watching a movie you’ve been meaning to see or taking a Pinterest break can be just as effective if you’d rather stay in. Make sure you allow your favorite de-stressing activities – whether you do something physical, something creative or somewhere in between – to become a priority in your schedule so you stay healthy and happy.

You can also spend time with your friends or classmates to de-stress as well, since they’re going through the same stress as you are; it’ll be fun for all of you to relax together! Some fun activities include doing yoga together or going for a Starbucks run for a well-deserved peppermint mocha. If you’re someone who likes to talk things out, this is a great idea, too. When you’re able to vent to your girls about certain parts of this process, you’ll gain comfort in knowing you’re not alone. However, if a person talking about college apps stresses you out even more, you can ask to change the subject or make sure the conversation stays positive by mentioning acceptance letters.

Another way to reduce your stress is to make sure you get your applications done early. You don’t want to wait until winter break to start your applications and have to write 20 to 30 essays in a mere 10 days. Time management is key here; make a plan for each college of when you’ll start the application, which days you’ll continue to work on it, when the school’s deadline is and when you personally want to have it completed by. Then, you can enjoy your winter break with family, friends, good food and Netflix. For high school juniors, consider planning ahead by applying to colleges early action and/or early decision, which will allow you to submit your applications on an early November deadline so you’ll know if you got accepted before Christmas!

Remember how I said this process will all be worth it in the end? Well, trust me, it totally will be! College is so much fun and will help shape your future, and in order to experience all of its joys, this is just one necessary step in order to gain acceptance and begin your adventure. Do what you need to do for yourself to stay motivated and at peace while you complete your applications, and be confident in the fact that your applications will be awesome as you wait to hear back from the admissions offices of each school! Don’t forget to celebrate once you’ve submitted all of your applications – you deserve it!

7 Steps to Looking More Awake During Finals

$
0
0

Finals are right around the corner and for most of us, that means staying up later than usual and getting up way, way earlier than we'd prefer. The extreme lack of sleep will have your skin looking dry and worn out, but have no worry. Here are Her Campus, we've got some amazing tips to keep you looking refreshed, energized and totally awake, even after you've pulled an all-nighter (or three) because the last thing you want to hear is, "You look tired..."

1. A splash of cold water

Skin feeling puffy when you first get up in the morning? While you're running around getting ready, stick two spoons in the freezer. The spoon trick works way better than the frozen cucumber or potato trick. Press the back part of the spoon to your eyes to reduce puffiness then splash some cold water on your face before applying your makeup to wake up the entirety of your face. Don't forget an eyecream, like Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream ($30) to help depuff and keep those eyes looking awake!

2. Morning facial

Improving the blood circulation in your face is another way to awaken your skin. One way to do that is by massaging your face—which is a great way to start the day with a DIY facial. Massage a small amount of a lightweight oil, like Josie Maran 100 percent Pure Argan Oil Light ($16 for 0.5 oz) which is perfect for dry and oily skin alike, to your cheeks, temples and nose bridge to give your face a natural glow.

3. Moisturize

Moisturizer gives your face a fresh dose of life. For those days you need an extra oomph factor, use a moisturizer with caffeine to give your face an extra boost. Try out Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer ($26.50.)

4. Illuminate

Speaking of a natural glow, here's another great tip. One handy makeup product to always have? Illuminator. Mix a little bit in your moisturizer or foundation for a simple pick-me-up that your face deserves. Aim for a golden-peach glow, such as NARS The Multiple in South Beach ($39), to brighten up your whole face. Add a little bit to your cheekbones and nose bridge to make them pop. For an added bit of color, use a soft pink, like Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Dollface or True Love ($26), on the apples of your cheek and then go over it with a light bronzer to add lift to your face.

5. Conceal

Possibly the most self-explanatory concept, but it does not hurt to stress how far a little bit of concealer can go. Conceal everything and anything, especially the bags underneath your eyes. A personal favorite is a concealer that luminizes and conceals, such as Yves Saint Laurent TOUCHE ÉCLAT Radiant Touch ($41).

6. Bright eyes

Forget what you've been told about white eyeliner: nude is the new white. Using a beige color, like Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Inner Rim Liner ($19), will give you a more natural look. Use a similar and shimmery colored eyeshadow in the inner corner of your eyes and use a round fluffy brush to blend it towards your eyelids. For extra brightening, use a light metallic gold color on your lids and amp up the mascara, which will help widen your eyes.

7. Lipstick

Lack of sleep affects all aspects of your face, including your lips. To give them a plumper look, use a natural shade such Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Grateful, a rosy nude ($24). Using a dark color can add years to your face and can also draw attention to dark circles that you forgot to conceal and highlight. If you're running short on time and you don't have time to perfect the wide-eye look, go straight to the lips. Fuschia will do wonders on all skintones. Try out MAKE UP FOR EVER Rouge Artist Intense in 36 ($20). Additionally, the bright shade will pull attention away from your face and towards your lips.

What do you think, collegiettes? What other tips do you use to fake a full night's sleep?

How to Deal When You Feel Out of Place in Your Sorority

$
0
0

You’ve finally made it! After days of waking up before the sun, strutting around campus in heels, smiling until your face was numb and meeting hundreds of potential new best friends a day, you received that beloved bid and pledged a sorority earlier this semester. However, after all the hype surrounding bid day fizzled out, you can’t help but notice that you don’t feel so at home amongst your new sisters. Maybe it’s the atmosphere of the house or the connections between all the girls who already seem so close, or maybe you’re just struggling to find your place. While dropping is always an option, you feel like you’ve come too far to throw it all away now!

While finding your place in your sorority may seem overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to start feeling closer with your sisters right now.

1. Keep an open mind

Everyone always told you to keep an open mind throughout the rush process, but it’s important to maintain that attitude long after you’ve pledged.

“A lot of people go through a time of wondering if sororities are even right for them because it is really overwhelming at the beginning,” says Ellen Bankston, a freshman at Purdue University and a member of Phi Mu. “Keep in mind that you won't be best friends with everyone, but there are most likely girls that are similar to you that you could end up being really good friends with if you keep an open mind. Stick it out, because there was a reason you were put in the house in the first place.”

Remember: Your sorority chose you! Whether it’s your charming personality, witty sense of humor, willingness to serve others or your sheer likeability, they want you there for a reason. Don’t be afraid to branch outside of your comfort zone and be open to new experiences. College is a time for having fun, discovering yourself and building a foundation for your future—and being part of a sorority can help you do all of the above!

2. Get involved with a committee

After pledging a sorority, you probably learned quickly that there’s more to Greek life than just parties and social events. Being on a committee is a great way to gain leadership experience, work with charities or philanthropic organizations and meet sisters who share similar interests with you!

“There are so many opportunities that one can become involved in once in a sorority,” says Adrienne Holland, a junior at Purdue University and sister of Sigma Kappa. “In terms of leadership, someone can become active on the executive or cabinet board within the sorority or in leadership positions among Panhellenic. If an individual is not elected to a leadership position, they can still have a voice within the chapter through being a committee member for someone on [the] executive board. This way, they can help the executive board in making decisions on philanthropy or recruitment.”

If you’re overwhelmed by the size of your sorority, joining a committee can be a great way to make it seem smaller. Start by getting to know a small group of girls who share your interests—whether it’s arts and crafts, leadership, event planning or anything in between—and branch out from there.

3. Make plans with a sister

While grabbing breakfast, going on a run or struggling through calculus homework with a sister may not seem like a big deal, they can be great ways to bond outside of the sorority’s organized activities.

“Just making an effort to get to know everyone helps a lot,” Ellen says. “In my two months of experience in a sorority, I have found it really easy to get close to the girls in my house. Just getting coffee or eating lunch with my sisters helps me the most.”

While parties, sisterhood events and other social activities can be a great way to hang out with all of your sisters at once, it can be hard to get to know them individually in a setting with hundreds of girls. If you find yourself feeling shy or afraid to branch out, try making plans with a sister one-on-one or with a small group.

“Instead of sitting in your room alone at night, go to another person's room or go to the main area people hang out in and spend time with them,” Adrienne says. “The only way you will start to feel more involved and accepted in the group is if you are an active participant and are open to making friends.”

4. Tell others about yourself

While sororities are very group-oriented, they rely on the individuality and diversity of the members to make them special. If you’re struggling to find your place in your sorority, don’t sacrifice the qualities that make you unique. Instead, use your personality and past experiences as a way to reach out to others, start conversations and relate to your sisters.

“I recommend opening up yourself to [your sorority sisters],” Adrienne says. “If you are open to their friendship, then they will be open to you. When you live in a house with 80 girls, you spend every waking second together. Soon enough, you know each other’s habits, quirks and personalities. If you're willing to let your sisters get to know you, then the close friendships will come.”

Although it may sound clichéd, being yourself is the key to developing quality friendships that last long beyond your college years. Be genuine, approachable and always willing to listen to others as well, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends in no time!

While sorority life can be daunting, remember that you’ve already overcome the most difficult part. Now that you’re through rush, focus your energy on getting involved, reaching out to your sisters and keeping busy. Remember that your sorority chose you for a reason, and they’re there to ensure you get the most out of your Greek-life experience. Don’t be afraid to take a risk, step out of your comfort zone and make the most of these precious years. Best of luck, collegiettes!

Your Complete Guide to Dressing for Office Holiday Parties

$

Whether your office is planning a huge holiday soirée or a low-key get-together, it pays to think ahead about your outfit. What you wear to work makes an impression on the people you interact with every day. What you wear to a holiday party, on the other hand, will make a good impression on people from other departments whom you don’t normally work with or higher-up employees to whom you may not have been introduced yet. Holiday parties are a great opportunity to network, so you’ll want to be both polished and festive. You want to appear professional but not look like a total Scrooge either, so we’ve put together a handy guide for how to dress for those work functions this season!

Before choosing your outfit, remember the number one rule for dressing for work parties is to be appropriately dressed. “Holiday parties offer a great time to stand out—in a good way,” Meryl Weinsaft Cooper and Jessica Kleiman, co-authors of Be Your Own Best Publicist: How To Use PR Techniques To Get Noticed, Get Hired & Get Rewarded At Work, say in a joint statement. “Finding an outfit that you feel comfortable in—and that looks good on you—is the first step. Basic rules of thumb: If you want to put your best foot forward, avoid anything too short, low, tight or loud.”

With that in mind, here are a few outfit examples for the different types of office holiday parties you might encounter!

For the casual get-together

Casual Get-Together

If your office dress code is generally on the casual side and the event comes nowhere near fancy, you have a bit more leeway to be festive (in the traditional sense).

How do you gauge how casual the holiday party is really going to be? Cooper and Kleiman recommend looking at the timing and location of the party. If it’s a cookie-decorating party during the afternoon or a potluck in the office break room, there’s a good chance the dress will be more casual. Still, make sure to look your best and be sophisticated—as in, nothing highly decorative (that necklace of flashing lights is for another time and place).

“A gathering in the office would call for a slightly amped-up version of what you’d wear to the office,” Cooper and Kleiman explain. “A sparkly camisole or scarf, splashes of holiday colors (gold, silver, blue or red) can add enough panache to make it party-worthy.”

To keep it classy, stick to black slacks or black jeans, and try to limit yourself to one overtly festive element in your outfit, like a tasteful Christmas sweater (don’t wear an ugly Christmas sweater unless it’s an ugly Christmas sweater party!). If you love getting really festive for the holidays (think reindeer ear headbands or Christmas-light earrings), bring those accessories with you in your purse and see if anyone else is donning similar ones too before you bring yours out, suggests Emily Miethner, founder and CEO of FindSpark, a career development community for young creatives.

When you’re deciding how festive your outfit should be, think about the overall feel of your office. If you’ve worked there for more than a few months, gauge how creative your outfit should get based on how your office treats other holidays. “Take cues from how your colleagues are talking about [the upcoming office party] for how into it you should get, especially if you don’t feel strongly one way or the other,” Miethner says. Did they go all out for Halloween and have a huge costume contest or decorating party? This is probably a good sign that they’ll go big for the holiday party, too.

For the cocktail party

Cocktail Party

Cocktail parties are a great time to break out your party dresses! “My office held a cocktail party for the holidays last year, and they sent out formal invites to everyone that listed all the details, including the cocktails that were being served,” says Maddie Palermo, a recent graduette working in finance in Wisconsin. “It was very classy—all my coworkers were wearing either suits or knee-length dresses. I made sure to wear flats, as cocktail parties are all about mingling.”

Opt for a classy fit-and-flare frock that doesn’t show too much of your décolletage—if you want to wear something strapless, be sure to throw a sparkly or colored cardigan over it. Wear tights if your office is more conservative; otherwise it’s fine to keep your legs bare as long as you’re not showing too much skin.

While a cocktail party may not be the most appropriate setting for kooky holiday accessories like the ones you could get away with at a more casual party, dressing colorfully is a great way to appear polished and festive at the same time. “Integrate colors from the upcoming holidays into your outfit—colors are always a safe bet,” Miethner says.

For the black-tie soirée

Black-Tie Soirée

Dressing for a black-tie event doesn’t have to be stressful. If your office is holding such an event, the invitation will probably say that it’s black tie. Black tie normally calls for longer ball gowns and more elegant accessories—and remember that it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. Pick out a pair of shoes that you will be comfortable in all night—ditching your shoes and going barefoot may have been normal behavior in college, but in the real world, and especially at work functions, it’s a no-no. If you’re comfortable in heels, opt for a pair with a lower heel that you’ve already broken in. If you can’t walk in heels, choose a pair of festive flats (they won’t show under your dress anyway!).

While the term “black tie” immediately brings to mind drab colors, you don’t necessarily have to dress in all black. Wear a beautiful jewel-toned gown and keep your accessories neutral, or brighten up a neutral outfit with pops of color in the form of sparkly jewelry and a colored clutch. While you won’t be able to express your love for the holidays as overtly as you would during a casual party, you can still incorporate holiday colors into your outfit.

“I had a black-tie holiday party to attend last year, and I went in a black, floor-length gown, but punched it up with gold and red accessories,” says Lindsey Carlson, a recent graduette working in marketing in Minnesota.

For the power-suit environment

Power-Suit Environment

If you work at an office where a blazer and slacks is the norm for everyone, dressing for a holiday party can be a bit trickier. “If your company is more of a “power-suit” environment, a little [festivity] will go a long way,” say Cooper and Kleiman. “A splash of festive color or a shell with a little sparkle could be just the touch you need to convey your holiday spirit.” Use creative but appropriate ways to show your enthusiasm for the holidays with colored jewelry (nothing too garish) or nail polish that is still professional (no glitter or crazy nail art). “If you have to be very subtle, go small—paint your nails, or wear a red blouse,” Miethner suggests. “Take cues from others and keep it simple if you’re lower on the totem pole.”

When in doubt, always err on the side of caution when dressing for holiday parties. “Being on the safe side is always good, just because if you’re a newer, entry-level employee, you don’t want your colleagues to be talking about you for the wrong reasons,” Miethner advises. Now is not the time to whip out that new, cleavage-baring red bandage dress!

Cooper and Kleiman echo that sentiment. “Be cognizant that your boss and boss’s boss will be there to raise a glass,” they say. “You don’t want to raise eyebrows because of your clothing (or, for that matter, drinking too much—another workplace-party faux pas!).”

If you’re still really stuck on what to wear, ask around your office for tips from more seasoned employees. “If you’re unsure, use it as an excuse to get advice and mentorship from your boss or colleagues,” Miethner says. “Ask them what the holidays are like around the office to get a feeling for how festive to go with your outfit.”

With everything you need to know about what to wear for your upcoming holiday party in mind, you’ll be able to dress to impress this season. Now that you’ll be going into any workplace event with the confidence that you are looking festive and professional, go ahead and mingle, network and have fun!

7 Times Mindy Kaling Won the Instagram Fashion Game

Chances are if you’re on Instagram and have a deep appreciation for—or shall we say, obsession with?—fashion and romantic comedies, you’re following our beloved Woman Crush Wednesday, Mindy Kaling. Why wouldn’t you be when she posts adorable behind-the-scenes images of The Mindy Project like this one on a regular basis?

Coming this January to #themindyproject, San Francisco baby

As if that weren’t reason enough to watch her feed like a hawk, Mindy also offers her followers sneak peeks of her most chic and put-together looks. Lately, she has shared several outfits that we’re dying to talk about—check out our seven favorites below!

Let’s start with this fab work-appropriate look that's not totally stuffy. A chunky magenta sweater, peach pencil skirt, and gold pointy-toe shoes make for a look any gal can easily copy for the office.

We all love a girl who reads, but the San Fran bookstore in this shot is only a backdrop to Mindy’s all-black ensemble. The leather jacket is perfect for fall, and the quilted crossbody bag with an edgy chain strap is cute and functional. Big props to Mindy for knowing that the flash of leg breaks up the dark tone of the outfit!

Another monochromatic look, this red print-on-print outfit is bold and brilliant. Without the structured cut of the coat, the top and bottom could have ended up looking like pajamas, but Mindy knows how to experiment with different shapes to optimum result!

We’re betting you didn’t even notice the Golden Gate Bridge in the background of this pic; you were way too busy being blinded by this amazing trench-and-floral-dress combo. The neon pink handbag and headband add a much needed pop of color that completely embodies her TV alter ego’s personal style.

While we love Mindy’s black-and-white printed dress, it’s her houndstooth coat we can’t get over. It fits her perfectly, as well it should… it was custom designed for her by her show’s costume designer, Sal Perez.

Don't just leave me on this San Francisco pier in my @salvadorperezcostumes custom coat all alone like an idiot

This is how Mindy does sporty chic, which makes us admire her all the more! Layering a luxe sweatshirt over a collared shirt is totally unexpected with her leopard tennis shoes, but it so works. The next time you wear a similar look switch your boots out for comfy sneakers.

Windowpane is a new take on plaid for fall, and Mindy does the print justice with these red and black pants. An embellished top and zipper booties give her a rocker vibe that would be ideal for a holiday party or a night on the town!

Finals week is almost here, which means it's time to gear up for those all-nighters and midnight food runs. Since you're already procrastinating on that paper you have to write, check out these 17 thoughts everyone has while studying for finals!

1. Okay, let's do this thing. I'm totally going to ace these exams.

2. Why doesn't any of this material sound familiar?

3. I probably should have bought the book.

4. Wait, this exam is cumulative?!

5. I'm going to drown my stress in food.

6. Is it possible to overdose on caffeine?

7. All-nighters are overrated.

8. At what point would it be socially acceptable to sleep in the library?

9. Maybe if I stare at this blank screen long enough, this 10-page paper will write itself.

10. I need a nap. A week-long nap.

11. Is this what dying feels like?

12. If I don't take a break soon, my head is going to explode.

13. I'll just watch one episode on Netflix. And scroll through Twitter for a bit, and check Instagram, and look at puppy gifs on Tumblr...

14. There's no way I can be expected to wear real pants this week.

15. I think I forgot how to study.

16. What's the lowest grade I can get on this exam to still pass the class?

17. I hope my future spouse is rich, because I give up.

How to Look Like a Victoria's Secret Angel

Did you catch the Victoria's Secret show in London last night? We certainly did and we were in awe, time after time, with each of the model's looks—not to mention their bodies! Seriously, they look so effortlessly perfect. How is one so wonderfully bronzed and toned?! Well, here in the Beauty School Blog, we have some tips and tricks to help you achieve that picture-perfect Victoria's Secret Angel look! While we've got you covered on all things beauty, full disclaimer: The following post does not help in the fitness department... that one is up to you, collegiettes.

Bright and beautiful

The VS Angels make looking beautiful extremely easy and effortless. We  know how difficult it is feign perfection, but you might just come pretty close with the how-to below. Here's how to achieve the Angel no-makeup makeup, aka bronzed goddess, look:

  1. Prep and prime your face with moisturizer and a mattifying primer.
  2. Use a radiant foundation or tinted moisturizer (NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 - $42 for regular size, $16 for travel size) and make sure to conceal any blemishes.
  3. Instead of your regular highlighter, opt for a gold-toned highlighter (Benefit Sun Beam, $26.) Blend it up into your temples and top of your cheekbones.
  4. Use a rosy pink blush and apply it to the apples of your cheek. For ultimate cheek lift, pull the color up towards the temples.
  5. Apply a bronzing powder to the jawline, under your cheekbones, and to your forehead. Check out NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo ($42 for regular size, $24 for travel size). The duo comes with Orgasm, a peachy-pink shimmer, and Laguna, a light brown shimmer.
  6. Use an eye primer to help keep the eyeshadow in place.
  7. Use a light gold eyeshadow on your lids, a shimmery pearl color in the inner corner of your eyes, and a matte light nude color onto your brow bones. Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights ($30) has an array of shimmery colors that can be used for eyes, cheeks or as bronzer.
  8. Tightline your eyes starting from the inner corner and extend it outwards for a slight cat-eye wing.
  9. Start off with lengthing mascara and then finish up with a volumizing mascara to get enviable lashes.
  10. Finish off your whole entire look with a pink and natural lip color (Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Tint in Grateful, $24.)

Now if we could only perfect this look in under 5 minutes...

Dreamy waves

Is there any possible way to just wake up with ready-to-go hair? Let us know if you ever find the almighty solution. In the meantime, we will have to resort to countless products and hair styling tools to achieve hair worthy of an Angel (but we promise, it's not as hard as it sounds!).

  1. Make sure to start off with clean hair.
  2. Use a volumizing mouse (Nexxus Mousse Plus Superior Hold Volumizing Foam, $9.59) and a finishing spray (Bumble and bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish, $16) on your towel-dried hair.
  3. Section parts of your hair and use a large round bristle brush and a blowdrier to dry each section.
  4. Pin up each section with large velcro rollers to contain the volume and help shape the curls as your continue with the rest of your hair.
  5. Starting with the back, use a large curling iron or wand to create those curls. Make sure to curl away from your face.
  6. Finish off your style with a light hairspray (DevaCurl Flexible-Hold Hair Spray, $24.95.)
  7. Enjoy beautiful waves and be #Flawless.

To bronze or not to bronze

Definitely bronze, like... everywhere. The VS Angels are known for being impeccably tan. Self-tanners are great, until you get streaky. Tanning booths aren't the best for your skin. So what's a collegiette to do if she wants to fake a tan... especially in the dead of winter? Body bronzer is your answer. Try out Too Faced Royal Oil Coconut Oil Body Bronzer ($31.50) for the perfect warm glow (the oil is also packed with anti-oxidants to help protect and nourish your skin!). But if you're looking to look luminous without the deep color, give Philosophy Amazing Grace Satin-Finish Body Oil Mist ($26) a try for a colorless and fragrant light glow.

Now, all we need are those wings...

Can Your Relationship Survive Finals Week?

$

Finals week can turn any collegiette into a sweatpants-wearing, Nutella-hoarding, stressed-out, grouchy mess. We’ve all had days when we woke up, knew we had six chapters of economics to study and a hefty final research paper to write and realized that we probably should not have the privilege of human contact that day.

But when you’re in a relationship, it’s not so easy to simply tell your SO that yes, you will be living in this self-induced solitary confinement full of pizza and tissues. Being in a relationship during times of stress is hard. Luckily for you, we’ve come up with three easy tips to make sure that finals week is a test for your brain, not for your relationship.

1. Communicate your expectations clearly

It’s no surprise that any good relationship has crystal-clear expectations and communication. Whether you need 24 hours to study with your cell phone completely off, a break for coffee every six hours or a motivational text every hour until that sociology final, your SO will want to be there for you — if he or she knows what to do.

“Openly discuss your needs and expectations for during finals,” says Jasbina Ahluwalia, a relationship expert and founder of Intersections Match by Jasbina. “Don't expect him to read your mind — express your needs and encourage him to share his by actively listening.”

Setting your expectations and schedules can help take some of the stress out of finals; if you know he’s studying all afternoon, you won’t be stressed out that he hasn’t responded to your text!

“We will usually talk about the upcoming week so we can be sure to set times to hang out together,” says Krysta, a junior at Wayne State University, of her and her husband. “Of course, having a schedule isn't the most romantic and spontaneous thing, but finals week is so hectic—it’s better to go in … prepared.”

Ahluwalia says that a great way to support your SO during finals week is “by expressing your needs, cutting each other slack and helping each other focus on your studies instead of distracting each other.” If your SO knows that your dream of becoming a doctor can’t come true without good grades in chemistry, maybe he or she will be more chill about you not responding to a text or canceling dinner at the last minute.

Every collegiette wants something different from her SO during finals week, and it’s up to you to decide what you want and ask for it.

2. Sync your schedules (and your breaks!)

Along with clear expectations comes the responsibility of knowing your SO’s finals schedule — does he or she have three finals at the beginning of the week, a final every day or just papers due at the end of the week? Knowing your SO’s schedule will help you because you’ll know when he or she may get stressed.

Ahluwalia suggests “coordinating your schedules to find small blocks of time to connect during finals week.” To be the most supportive of your SO and to find times to take breaks, however, you have to know what’s going on! While you may not necessarily prod your friends for their finals schedules, knowing your SO’s can really make things easier for your relationship.

“My husband and I will usually plan out the week ahead of time so we know when each other will be busy,” Krista says. “That way we can plan who makes dinner, who goes to grab chips for movie night, etc.”

During the stressful time of finals week, a girl has to eat, exercise and take other forms of breaks from studying. Ditch your bad studying habits and learn how utilize breaks best in your studying. Include your SO in these activities — you won’t be lonely, and he or she will love to see you when you’re taking a break.

However, Ahluwalia suggests thinking twice before you study with your SO: “You know yourself — will his studying with you provide comfort and moral support, or distract you?” Will your SO actually be helpful while you’re studying for that chemistry final, or you should hit up your lab partner as a study buddy instead?

“Consider taking breaks together for essentials, like meals and stress-reducing workouts,” Ahluwalia says. “During your finals-week breaks, be present and focus on each other.  Also keep in mind that touch can be a great stress reliever.”

Knowing you have time with your SO to look forward to can help ease a long day of studying. “We spend the day studying, but pull ourselves from the books at night,” Krista says. “We will have dinner together, watch a movie or go for a walk – anything we can do together for two or three hours away from the school environment.”

After finals, plan something fun. “Immediately after big tests, we are usually pretty tired, so we will probably watch a movie together or just hang out,” says an Alice*, a junior at Stanford University, of her and her SO. “But the weekend after big tests or finals when we've had a bit more sleep, we love to go hiking together!”

3. Let your SO know you care

During finals week, make sure that your SO feels loved and supported. “Send him short texts or write him little notes and [leave] them on his book or pillow,” Ahluwalia says. Before finals week, she says, you can make “thoughtful gifts like a ‘finals basket’ filled with Starbucks gift certificates, his favorite snacks and loving notes.” You’ll be less stressed if you know that you’re supporting your SO, and it will make him or her feel great, too!

“Consider planning a special break for the two of you immediately after finals, like a special celebratory date night or romantic getaway,” Ahluwalia says. “It will provide a light at the end of the tunnel and give you concentrated time to reconnect.” Start planning those reservations at that favorite restaurant now so that you don’t have to worry about it during finals week!

“I think that a big part of support in any relationship is being a good listener, so one of the ways that I support [my SO] during finals is by being aware of what he has going on and listening to how he feels about everything,” says Kate*, a junior from Stanford University. “I also know that finals period is one of the most stressful times at school, so sometimes the best way to support someone is to listen without the need to give a lot of feedback, or even just spending time together that doesn't have anything to do with tests or studying.”

Letting your SO know that you care about him or her means being attuned to his or her needs and desires. Even if you may want to discuss every detail of your calculus final, your SO may not want to talk about that tricky question on the economics exam.

Studying for finals can be a long and stressful process, but supporting and being supported by your SO can make everything a little more manageable. Your relationship doesn’t have to take a toll when textbooks have to become your new SO; instead, you can make your relationship even stronger when you two face adversity together.

The 9 Types of People You See in Starbucks

On any given day at any Starbucks from Boston to Los Angeles, thousands of people wait in line for their coffee fix. We know you've been sitting at your campus Starbs for hours, working on your third iced coffee and trying to finish that history paper, but instead, you're people watching, of course. Here are the types of people we usually see at Starbucks.

1. The High School Girls

Trenta double-whip vanilla bean Frappuccino with a raspberry swirl? These girls will order drinks that will take forever to make... and you'll hear a lot about One Direction while you're waiting.

2. The Instagrammer

There's always that one girl taking a picture of her drink for Snapchat or Instagram. Yep, it's definitely interesting that you got a latte today. And yesterday. And the day before.

3. The Complicated Orderer

If you're talking for the barista for five minutes about what you want in your latte, you're doing it wrong.

4. The Confused Adult

"I'll have a medium... what do you call it?"

5. The First Date

There's always those two people in the corner struggling to have a conversation while they awkwardly wait for their drinks at the counter. We hope it's going better than it looks.

6. The Sorority Gossip Session

You definitely didn't need to know what Melissa did on the table at that frat house last night, but now you do.

7. The Person Whose Name is Spelled Wrong and Who is Really Not Okay With It

These people write hundreds of names on cups every day. Do you think they really care if your name is "Ann" rather than "Anne"?

8. The Cell Phone Talker

Yes, please have a heart-to-heart with your long-distance boyfriend about the future of your relationship. You definitely shouldn't step outside.

9. The Extremely Studious One

This girl has been there for five hours and has yet to emerge from her armchair. She makes us feel bad for not actually doing our work. What problem set?

dominique cohen for Miss Me Launches This Week!

Holiday shopping is hard. I love it, but it’s difficult finding the perfect gift for everyone on my list. You don’t want to be super impersonal (hello soap!) but some gifts, like clothes, can be too personal to buy for someone else. I’ve found that the best balance between thoughtful and personal is jewelry.

Now, while I would love to buy everyone on my list diamonds, pearls and gold, I think we can all agree that’s not very realistic. So I endlessly browse fashion jewelry, trying to find just the right thing for my mom, sister and friends at just the right price.

Excitingly for me and my quest to find great jewelry for the lovely ladies in my life (and myself too!) is the dominique cohen for Miss Me collection that's about to launch. Dominique usually makes really high-end jewelry with 18-karat gold, gemstones and diamonds—but she partnered with Miss Me to launch a limited collection of 15 pieces of jewelry more in line with a collegiette budget.  Plus Miss Me is getting inspired by dominique cohen in return with four new denim styles featuring more glitz than ever!

The collection features dangly earrings, charm bracelets, bangles, cuffs and necklaces and is available exclusively on MissMe.com starting December 6th! The pieces are available in rose gold, gold, and silver, so there’s something for everyone on your list. Like the sparkly jeans that pair with the jewels, everything can be dressed up with glam hair, makeup and a pair of heels, or dressed down — so it’s very versatile.

If you want to see the pieces in person, and you live in the Dallas area, you’re in luck! There is a pop-up shop event in Dallas this Saturday!
