Whoa, Whoa, Whoa—Lana Condor & Noah Centineo Are Returning for a 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before' Sequel

It's official: Lana Condor and Noah Centineo are reuniting for a To All the Boys I've Loved Before sequel.

Rumors of a follow-up to the Netflix rom-com have been swirling for awhile now, especially after the film's director, Susan Johnson, shared a photo of a Collider article that reported the news of the sequel, captioning it, "Well, the cat’s out of the bag! Thanks for the support, everyone!!! It’s all you!"

But the second film wasn't confirmed until Wednesday evening, when Condor posted an Instagram video exclaiming, "I am so excited it's officially official!"

In the video, the actress is on FaceTime with Centineo, talking about needing to "sign a new contract." Centineo responds with Kavinsky's iconic "Woah, woah, woah," line, adding that he wanted to make the first rule in said contract — watching The Christmas Prince 1 and 2 together.

Condor agrees, but only if they can "tell the fans about their little secret."

Cue the news. "Bring on the sequel!" Centineo says.

Before the clip ends, Condor also mentions John Ambrose McClaren (the guy who shows up at the original film's conclusion). Perhaps Netflix is looking for a new actor?

The streaming giant released a statement of its own regarding the sequel on Wednesday, according to Entertainment Weekly. In true TATBILB form, it was in the form of a handwritten note, reading, "I miss you. I know it’s only been a few months and I swear I wasn’t trying to avoid you; I just didn’t know how to answer your question without lying to you."

The statement continued, "The truth isn’t always simple or straightforward — and as we know all too well, dating contracts have a way of quickly getting complicated. But, the letters are out…it’s true. A To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel is coming to Netflix. And yes, you can seamlessly continue to run your #Covinsky fan accounts because your dreamy stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo are in on it too. So let’s do this. I promise the next chapter will be well worth the wait! Love, Netflix."

The film is based on the 2014 book of the same name by Jenny Han. However, it's unknown whether or not the sequel will follow the plot of her next book in the series, P.S. I Still Love You.

After reportedly enduring an "emotional breakdown" more than two months ago, Selena Gomez is now checked out of the mental health treatment center she entered and instead with friends on a ski vacation.

The singer's friends, Connar Franklin and Bailee Madison, both posted Instagram photos with Gomez on Tuesday. A source told PEOPLE she's "feeling much better and looking forward to getting back to normalcy" while "spending time with friends and family."

Back in October, Gomez was hospitalized twice — both times because she had a low white blood cell count, which is common for kidney transplant patients. Gomez had a transplant last year because of her ongoing battle with lupus.

During her second hospitalization, Gomez reportedly had a panic attack. A source told TMZ that she was "despondent and emotional" over the low white blood cell count. This prompted her to enter a treatment center on the East Coast, where she underwent dialectical behavior therapy (a treatment often used for various mental health conditions).

"She has had a tough few weeks and the panic attack in the hospital was the tipping point," a source told PEOPLE at the time.

Gomez had previously announced that she was taking a break from social media. "As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given," she captioned an Instagram photo. "Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember— negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi."

The singer has always been open about her struggle with both lupus and depression and anxiety. Hopefully she is in and continues to be in a good place!

Facebook Reportedly Gave Spotify & Netflix Access to Users' Private Messages

Facebook has had its fair share of scandals this year — mostly dating back to the 2016 presidential election — and the latest has to do with the social network's partnerships with companies like Apple and Netflix.

According to a report from The New York Times, Facebook gave those companies, as well as Spotify, Amazon, and Microsoft, more access to users' personal data than previously admitted. This included private messages, names, and contact information for friends.

"Facebook allowed Microsoft’s Bing search engine to see the names of virtually all Facebook users’ friends without consent, the records show and gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read Facebook users’ private messages,"The Times' report read. "The social network permitted Amazon to obtain users’ names and contact information through their friends, and it let Yahoo view streams of friends’ posts as recently as this summer, despite public statements that it had stopped that type of sharing years earlier."

The Times reviewed hundreds of pages of Facebook documents to get to the bottom of the company's data-sharing practices.

The social network responded with a blog post on Wednesday night, saying, "No third party was reading your private messages, or writing messages to your friends without your permission. Many news stories imply we were shipping over private messages to partners, which is not correct."

Facebook's director of privacy and public policy, Steve Satterfield, also issued a statement to ABC News

"Facebook’s partners don't get to ignore people’s privacy settings, and it’s wrong to suggest that they do. Over the years, we’ve partnered with other companies so people can use Facebook on devices and platforms that we don’t support ourselves. Unlike a game, streaming music service, or other third-party app, which offer experiences that are independent of Facebook, these partners can only offer specific Facebook features and are unable to use information for independent purposes."

Satterfield added that Facebook will work to "regain people's trust."

"Protecting people's information requires stronger teams, better technology, and clearer policies, and that's where we've been focused for most of 2018. Partnerships are one area of focus and, as we've said, we're winding down the integration partnerships that were built to help people access Facebook," he said.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump Withdraws Troops in Syria, Paul Ryan's Goodbye, & Border Wall GoFundMe

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Trump Orders Removal of U.S. Troops in Syria

After President Trump tweeted that the U.S. has "defeated ISIS in Syria"— which he said was the only reason troops were there during his presidency — the White House ordered the Pentagon to pull U.S. forces from the country immediately. As a result, more than 2,000 U.S. troops will be withdrawn. According to The Guardian, officials were "left scrambling" after the seemingly abrupt announcement — just this summer, the U.S. decided to keep troops in Syria — which they only learned of Tuesday night.

Trump also tweeted a video, further explaining the withdrawal. "We've been fighting for a long time in Syria. I've been president for almost two years, and we've really stepped it up, and we have won against ISIS," he said. "We've beaten them and we've beaten them badly, we've taken back the land, and now it's time for our troops to come home."

The president added that the troops "are great heroes of the world. Because they've fought for us, but they've killed ISIS, who hurts the world. And we're proud to have done it." Top Republican leaders condemned the decision, including Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. Marco Rubio. Deputy Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan declined reporters' questions, and Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning only briefly commented on the move: "At this time, we continue to work by, with and through our partners in the region."

Paul Ryan Bids Congress Goodbye

House Speaker Paul Ryan delivered his farewell address on Wednesday, bringing an end to his 20 years in Congress. Throughout the speech, Ryan called for more civility and said the country's problems "are solvable if our politics will allow it." He added, "Certainly one Congress cannot solve all that ails us. Not every outcome has been perfect. I am darn proud of what we have achieved together to make this a stronger and more prosperous country."

Ryan specifically acknowledged his inability to affect the country's growing deficit and enact reform for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. "I acknowledge plainly that my ambitions for entitlement reform have outpaced the political reality and I consider this our greatest unfinished business," he said.

The Wisconsin Republican announced his retirement in April, explaining that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

A GoFundMe Campaign for a Border Wall Has Raised More Than $1M in Three Days

A little over a week ago, Trump threatened a government shutdown if Congress didn't give him $5 billion for the construction of his border wall. He even said he'd be "proud" to do so. While White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway seemed to indicate that Trump was already backing down on Wednesday — she said if Congress passed a short-term resolution to keep the government open, Trump would "take a look at that certainly"— supporters of the proposed wall took it upon themselves to find funding: a GoFundMe campaign. Started by 37-year-old Flordian Brian Kolfage, a Trump supporter and disabled Iraq War veteran, the crowdfunding campaign has raised nearly $2 million after being live for just three days. The final goal? The website's max, $1 billion.

"Like a majority of those American citizens who voted to elect President Donald J Trump, we voted for him to Make America Great Again. President Trump’s main campaign promise was to BUILD THE WALL," Kolfage wrote on the GoFundMe page. "And as he’s followed through on just about every promise so far, this wall project needs to be completed still."

According to POLITICO, Kolfage said that he's in touch with the Trump administration about how to transfer the donations, and the possibility of a legal firm's involvement to ensure the money isn't used elsewhere.

Travis Scott Revealed That He & Kylie Jenner Will Be 'Married Soon'

According to Travis Scott himself, the rumors that he and Kylie Jenner secretly tied the knot aren't true. However, he did say that a wedding is in the near future: "We'll get married soon," the rapper told Rolling Stone.

"I just gotta sturdy up — I gotta propose in a fire way," Scott said. Perhaps he'll take a page out of Kanye West's book, who famously popped the question to Kim Kardashian at the San Francisco Giants' baseball stadium with a 50-piece orchestra and roman candles burning.

In the meantime, Travis said he and Kylie will continue to spend as much time as possible with their daughter, Stormi. "We don't let nothing come over Stormi time," he told the magazine. "Stormi Saturdays. We don't f—k around with those. Even with me on tour, Stormi pulls up. She'll travel. She got more stamps on her passport than a lot of motherf—kers."

Travis also talked about Kylie throughout the interview, opening up about how they met at Coachella in 2017 and were both immediately smitten.

"We was just two kids, f—king around," he said. "Maybe, like, the first week, you don’t know if it’s real or a fling. Then the second week you’re like, ‘Whoa, I’m still talking to her, she’s responding, I’m responding. We ain’t run out of a thing to say.’ And it got to a point where I was like, ‘I need her with me to operate. She’s that one.'"

To Travis, Kylie isn't obsessed with fame or anything like that. In fact, he was surprised at how "normal" she is. "I like to just go outside and walk," he said. "Knowing a girl that famous, you’d think she’s like, ‘I need to go send somebody to do this for me,’ or ‘I need 15 motherfuckers around me,’ but we just walk out the crib."

Travis continued, "Me, I hate cameras. I don’t like people in my business. Going into a situation like that, you’d think it would be a whole public fest. You never know. ‘Maybe she’s into all the photos, or worried about this and that.’ And then you realize motherf—kers is normal as possible. I realized what really mattered to her, which is none of this shit. She’s the coolest motherf—ker of all time."

Michelle Obama's Thigh-High Glitter Balenciaga Boots Are All That Matters

During the final stop of the book tour for Becoming, former first lady Michelle Obama sat down for a conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker in front of a packed Barclays Center. Though SJP is famous for her love of shoes — namely Manolo Blahniks — it was the pair Obama donned that caught everyone's attention: $3,900 sparkly gold thigh-high Balenciaga boots.

"Do you wanna talk about her boots?" Parker asked the Brooklyn crowd before looking over to Obama and asking her, "Do you want to take some time to talk about your boots?"

The audience's answer was clear; they wanted to hear about the boots.

Throughout her eight years in the White House, Obama made a name for herself in many ways — including as a style influencer. But instead of routinely sporting expensive designer labels, Obama and her longtime stylist Meredith Koop often made a point to champion up-and-coming designers or affordable retailers like Gap and Target.

"A lot of what I had to think about was: I have to wear fashion, fashion can't wear me. I didn't have time to work with designers individually so [Koop] would do that work," Obama explained. "We'd research and look at who's out there. It was not just did I love what they designed, but it was also, what kind of people were they? And how do we send a message of diversity and supporting American designers? Because you get to a point where you're like, I can put on anything."

She continued, "We decided, why don't we use this platform to lift up some new, young designers who normally wouldn't get this kind of attention?"

Obama specifically cited Jason Wu, who designed her inaugural gown.

"You can change their lives: He's young, his story was amazing, he didn't expect it, [and] he didn't feel entitled to it," she said. "Because you learn there are people in this scene who feel entitled to these things because they've done it for a while. And I sensed that feeling of, like, 'Oh, you think this is just yours?' There are a lot of people out here trying to make it; young people, women, Black folks, and immigrants."

Obama might've been referring to designer Oscar de la Renta, who often criticized her for not wearing his fashions.

But things are completely different now that she's out of the White House, Obama explained. "Now, I'm free to do whatever," she told Parker, referring to the boots.

"They were just really cute," Obama said. "I was like, 'Those some nice boots!'"

HC Wake-Up Call: Mattis Resigns, House Passes Funding Bill with Wall, & Worst Dec. Stock Market Since Great Depression

Trump Announces Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' Resignation

President Trump took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that Defense Secretary James Mattis would be retiring at the end of February. He was not forced to resign, and this was instead a decision he made on his own. It comes a month after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions was pushed out after the midterm elections in November.  In his resignation letter, the retired Marine general cited Trump's need for a Defense secretary whose views were "better aligned" with his own: "Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position."

According to CNN, a senior administration official said that Mattis was "vehemently opposed" to Trump's recent decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria, and possibly Afghanistan. He also expressed concern about China and Russia, who "want to shape a world consistent with their authoritarian model - gaining veto authority over other nations' economic, diplomatic, and security decisions - to promote their own interests at the expense of their neighbors, America and our allies," Mattis wrote.

ABC News reported that both top Republicans and Democrats were concerned about the resignation. "What happened in Syria is the straw that broke the camel’s back," New York Dem Rep. Eliot Engel, the incoming chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said. "It’s a terrible move, it will clearly backfire."

Texas Republican Rep. Michael McCaul said he "slept better knowing [Mattis] was in charge of our military." He added, "We want our enemies to fear us, and we want our allies to trust us. They trusted Secretary Mattis and he stabilized world view and world opinions so I think that’s going to be the loss."

House Passes Short-Term Funding Bill with Wall

The house approved a short-term funding bill that included $5.7 billion for Trump's proposed border wall on Thursday night. However, the move was likely a slight against the president. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Senate initially passed the bill without the wall funding, and by adding the $5.7 billion for it, Congress has to send the bill back to the Senate where it will most likely be blocked by Democrats.

South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford said the situation "sets up legislative chaos." Trump has previously threatened to let the government shutdown if the wall is not funded. If a bill isn't passed by Friday at midnight— when seven spending bills expire — a shutdown will go into effect.

Stock Market on Pace for Worst December Since Great Depression

Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 — two major U.S. stock indexes — are currently on track for their worst December performance since the Great Depression in 1931, per CNN. What's more, the Dow is 1,000 points lower than when Trump's tax reform changes a year ago.

According to Business Insider, December is often a positive month for markets because investors are "filled with festive cheer and optimism." What's currently happening could be a bad sign for things to come. For example, Morgan Stanley's chance of a recession next year — currently at 50 percent — could get even worse. "At this point, the market is pricing in a material slowdown next year as sentiment and positioning have reached levels not seen since the last recession scare in early 2016," the US equity strategy team said, BI reported.

It'll Take More Than 100 Years To Close The Gender Economic Gap — But Tell Us More About How It's A Myth

$

It’s no secret that dismantling institutional sexism is a long-term project, but now we can officially put a number on it. Business Insider reports that the World Economic Forum (WEF) calculated it will take 200 years to close the gender economic gap across the globe. The study also looked at disparities in politics, health, and education — and concluded would take a mere 108 years to fully resolve.

Per usual, these numbers only tell part of the story since gender equity is unevenly distributed throughout the globe and individual communities. Broken down by region, the 2018 Global Gender Gap Report concludes that the gender gap will be closed in 61 years in Western Europe, but not for a whopping 171 years in East Asia.

While the study looks primarily at countries as a whole, the history of intersectional discrimination means the fight for the rights of marginalized women will likely be much more arduous and time-consuming. For instance, Vox reports that black women in the US earn 63 cents for every dollar earned by a white man, which is 16 cents lower than white women who earn 79 cents to the dollar.

As part of their study, the WEF compiled a list ranking the gender equity gap in every country. The US ranking is one of the most disappointing, but, frankly, unsurprising statistics. At 51st in the world, the US is beat in gender equality by countries like the UK, Rwanda, Latvia, and Canada—all of which are listed in the top 20. Countries at the bottom of the ranking include Yemen, Pakistan, Iraq, and Syria.

The top four countries—Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland—provide a practical blueprint for how countries can build a society allows women to gain power and prosper. In an in-depth study on why these Nordic countries rank so highly, the WEF found that their key attributes included female political representation, progressive policies, and paid maternal leave.

Demi Lovato Speaks Out About Rumors & Says She's 'Sober & Grateful to Be Alive'

Demi Lovato took to Twitter on Friday night to set the record straight about recent tabloid reports. She also said she's "sober and grateful to be alive" after an alleged overdose in July.

"I love my fans, and hate tabloids. Don't believe what you read. People will literally make up stuff to sell a story. Sickening," Demi tweeted. "If I feel like the world needs to know something, I will tell them MYSELF. Otherwise people stop writing about my recovery, because it’s no one’s business but mine. I am sober and grateful to be alive and taking care of ME."

Demi also wrote that "any 'source' out there that is willing to talk and sell stories to blog and tabloids" about her life isn't actually a part of her life. Plus, most of what she reads is "inaccurate."

In November, Demi completed three months of treatment in a rehabilitation center, and has recently returned to social media. She added on Friday that one day she might reveal what exactly happened back in July, but she's not ready to talk about it yet.

"Someday I’ll tell the world what exactly happened, why it happened and what my life is like today.. but until I’m ready to share that with people please stop prying and making up shit that you know nothing about," Demi tweeted. "I still need space and time to heal.."

The singer concluded her tweets by saying she's "blessed" and that she loves her fans. "I’m so blessed I get to take this time to be with family, relax, work on my mind, body and soul and come back when I’m ready," Demi wrote. "I have my fans to thank for that. I’m so grateful, truly. I love you guys so fucking much. thank you."

Back when Demi was hospitalized, her fans wanted to show their support and appreciation — so a large group of them gathered at Atlantic City Beach for an impromptu concert where Demi had been scheduled to perform. Videos captured them holding encouraging signs, singing Demi's song "Sober," and shouting things like "We still love you!"

Cardi B & Offset Appear to Be Back Together

Just a little over two weeks after Cardi B announced that her and Migos rapper Offset were splitting up, the two appear to have reunited.

The pair was spotted in photos obtained by TMZ on Friday that showed them riding a jet ski together. Both had been sharing Instagram stories of their apparent vacation in Puerto Rico beforehand; however, neither of theirs showed the other.

For what it's worth, Cardi wasn't wearing her ring in the photos!

TMZ also reported that during Cardi's performance in San Juan on Friday night, Offset was "cheering her on" from backstage. The same day, the rapper may have been trying to hint that he's trying to change his (alleged) cheating ways. He posted an Instagram photo of him with the caption quoting Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."

Plagued by Offset's infidelity rumors for awhile now, Cardi announced in a since-deleted Instagram video on Dec. 5 that she and Offset would be getting a divorce.

"Things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time," Cardi said. "It’s nobody fault I guess we just grew out of love, but we are not together anymore. It might take time to get a divorce and I’m going to always have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father."

But that didn't stop Offset from crashing Cardi's performance at the "Rolling Loud" festival. He took the stage with 2,000 roses that spelled out "Take Me Back Cardi." However, Cardi only seemed irritated (and rightfully so).

The two currently share a 5-month-old daughter, Kulture.

Government Partially Shuts Down Amid Fight Over Border Wall

$

Parts of the U.S. government shut down as Friday night turned to Saturday morning because of the House and Senate's inability to finalize a federal-spending deal before the deadline.

Lawmakers returned to work on Saturday in hopes of negotiating some sort of deal that would end the shut down of one quarter of the government, which affects 800,000 federal workers. But there's one big problem standing in the way: President Trump's demand for $5 billion in funding for his proposed wall along the border with Mexico. So far, Democrats have remained steady in their efforts against the wall.

"President Trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall – plain and simple," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said from the Senate floor.

Trump, however, doesn't seem to be backing down. He tweeted on Saturday morning, threatening a "long stay" if he doesn't get the "desperately needed Border Security" needed. He also appears to be backing off his statement from last week— he claimed he would be "proud" to shut down the government, telling Schumer he wasn't going to blame him for it — only to tweet that "Democrats now own the shutdown."

Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are reportedly prepared for the closure to last past Jan. 3, when Dems take control of the House and Pelosi will likely become speaker. In a joint statement, the two said Trump "threw a temper tantrum and convinced House Republicans to push our nation into a destructive Trump shutdown in the middle of the holiday season."

The statement continued, "Democrats have offered Republicans multiple proposals to keep the government open, including one that already passed the Senate unanimously, and all of which include funding for strong, sensible, and effective border security — not the president's ineffective and expensive wall. If President Trump and Republicans choose to continue this Trump Shutdown, the new House Democratic majority will swiftly pass legislation to re-open government in January."

It has been almost three years since Rihanna has graced us with an album, and it looks like the wait may soon be over!

The singer confirmed on Friday that her long-awaited ninth studio album will be released sometime next year. While promoting Fenty Beauty’s new lipstick collection, a fan commented on the Instagram post, “But when is the new album coming Robyn? Can we have a release date for that?”

Rihanna answered with, “2019.”

She hasn’t released a new album since Anti in 2016, which was nominated for two Grammys. But the singer has definitely been busy since then! Back in 2017 Refinery29 reports, Rihanna was named Harvard University’s Humanitarian of the Year for her work with UNICEF and her own charity the Believe Foundation. It seems like congratulations are in order for Insatiable star Debby Ryan and Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun, who announced their engagement Saturday night

The two announced their engagement with a series of sweet posts on Twitter and Instagram. “I said yes!” Ryan wrote on Twitter. She then hilariously followed with “Well Technically I said ‘NO WAY’ twice but I meant yes.” The adorable post also included a ton of photos documenting the engagement, including a completely shocked Ryan and a close-up shot of the gorgeous ring.

Dun also shared the proposal photos on Instagram, including pictures of the rustic tree house in New Zealand where he popped the question. Honestly, he gets an A+ for proposal creativity! “I found a treehouse in the woods in New Zealand and proposed to my girl,” he wrote. “She my dude for life. I love you Debby.”

The surprises and celebration didn’t end there. According to Teen Vogue, Dun brought Ryan’s brother and sister-in-law to New Zealand for a secret engagement dinner. “He flew my brother and sis-in-law in to surprise me at our engagement dinner,” she wrote. The dinner looked like a small and cute celebration of their love, and it even included balloons spelling out their ship name “Jebby” and a cake. Ryan wrote in her story, “you threw the best night.”

Congrats to the both of them!

The Government Shutdown Means That The Violence Against Women Act Has Expired

The government shutdown officially started at midnight on Friday. In failing to agree on a spending deal that would keep the government open, the Violence Against Women Act expired and programs that helped survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault are now without funding.

The extension of the act ran out on Friday before Congress was able to pass legislation again to protect it. According to theWashington Post, the VAWA was scheduled to expire in September, but it was temporarily extended twice.

The Post reported that the Senate passed a resolution that extended the act’s authorization until Feb. 8 and also folded it into a spending bill. The House on Thursday passed a continuing resolution bill that also included an extension. But the deals were not approved by both chambers and the president before VAWA’s expiration deadline. This means that funding for key government agencies aiding domestic violence and sexual assault survivors lapsed.

About 75 percent of the federal government has already been funded, but a number of government departments are without it, CNN reports. The Justice Department is part of this lapse in funding, and it also funds a bunch of programs under the act.

The act allows funding for 25 programs, according to the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. The programs are designed to stop violent crimes against women and to strengthen states law enforcement and criminal prosecution services. It also includes social service agencies that help sexual violence victims such as rape crisis centers, shelters and legal-assistance programs. According to Roll Call, the reauthorization of the act have expanded to reporting strategies of sexual violence on college campuses and expanding protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has been an advocate for a long-term extension of the Violence Against Women Act saying in September that, “Republicans’ decision to include only a short-term VAWA reauthorization in the must-pass minibus spending bill is nothing shorting of an abdication of our responsibilities to women in our country.”

This is the second time that the act has lapsed in 25 years, Roll Call reports. VAWA first expired in 2011, and it wasn’t entirely reauthorized until 2013. As of right now, VAWA programs in Health and Human Services have been funded until September 2019. This means that funding for these programs administered by HHS can continue even though authorizations have expired.

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds — we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Government Shutdown Could Continue Well Into The New Year

The partial government shutdown has moved into its third day with still no agreement between the White House and congressional leaders on a deal.

Many are questioning when the partial government shutdown will end. Well, one member of Trump’s administration has a prediction. “I don’t think things are going to move very quickly here the next couple of days,” said acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney on Sunday in an interview with Fox News Sunday. “It’s very possible this shutdown will go beyond the 28th and into the new Congress.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell adjourned the Senate on Saturday with no plans to return to business until Thursday, leaving over 420,000 employees without pay through the holiday, USA Today reports. But Mulvaney said that not much would be accomplished during the holiday.

“It’s Sunday right now, and the government is shut down mostly on a Sunday anyway,” he said. “Government is shut down tomorrow anyway because it’s the federal holiday and Tuesday is Christmas, again, another federal holiday. So, Wednesday is really the first day that this kicks in.”

He also implied that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi might be a reason for the spending bills delay. “I think she’s now in that unfortunate position of being beholden to her left-wing, where she cannot be seen agreeing with the president on anything until after she’s speaker,” Mulvaney said. “If that’s the case, I think there’s a chance we go into the next Congress.”

But Pelosi suggested in a tweet that “Democrats have offered Republicans multiple proposals to keep the government open, including one that already passed the Senate unanimously, & all of which include funding for strong, sensible, & effective border security—not the president’s ineffective and expensive wall.”

Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday that the president wasn’t giving up on funding for the border wall, but that he did offer a “counter offer.” Trump reportedly requested between $1.3 billion and $5 billion in funding for border security Mulvaney told Fox News.

It’s unclear how long the shutdown will last.

Court Says Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is Already Working After Surgery

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is already up and working following cancer surgery, the Associated Press reports.

Kathy Arberg, who is a spokeswoman for the court, said on Sunday that Justice Ginsburg is still in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The Supreme Court justice went into surgery on Friday to remove two malignant growths in her left lung, according to the Associated Press. Her doctors found no remaining evidence of the disease.

Justice Ginsburg casted the deciding vote on Trump’s asylum restrictions from her hospital bed, according to NBC News. The policy would have temporarily blocked immigrants from applying for asylum if they entered the U.S. anywhere but official points of entry, CNN reported.

A federal judge in California had blocked Trump’s asylum ban, and it was later upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote. While she was hospitalized, Ginsburg was ultimately the deciding vote.

This is the third time that Ginsburg has underwent treatment for cancer. She received treatment in 1999 for colorectal cancer and 2009 for pancreatic cancer, NPR reports. Even with her health problems, NBC News reports that Ginsburg has not missed any Supreme Court arguments in the last 25 years on the bench. As of right now, there’s no information on when she will return home.

Hogg wasn’t the only Parkland survivor and gun control activist who was accepted into the university. Jaclyn Corin was also accepted to Harvard. She tweeted a screenshot of her early acceptance letter earlier this month, and wrote “HARD WORK PAYS OFF.”

Hemsworth shared a similar photo, writing,“My love.”  Cyrus later posted this adorable video of her and Liam dancing to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson's song Uptown Funk.

While Cyrus and Hemsworth didn’t specifically say that the ceremony took place, her caption of “10 years later….” led fans to believe that this was how the couple decided to announce that they were finally married.

Speculation about their wedding began on Sunday night after Miley’s younger sister Noah Cyrus shared photos of herself crying. Their friend Conrad Jack Carr also shared photos and videos of the nuptials on his Instagram Story, People reports. The two were in the same attire as the photos above, with balloons in the background that said “Mr.” and “Mrs.” They even appeared to be cutting a wedding cake, with the singer’s mom Tish Cyrus in the background. Some of their family members also seen in Carr’s Instagram Story include Chris Hemsworth, Luke Hemsworth, and Brandi Cyrus. The not-yet-confirmed event took place at the couples home in Franklin, Tennessee, People confirms.

Cyrus and Hemsworth’s relationship has had some ups and downs, including the two breaking up in September of 2013 and then reunited in January of 2016, according to E News. The two first met on the set of the 2010 film The Last Song.

Furthermore, the two lost their Malibu home in the California wildfires back in November. The couple helped those battling the fires and those affect by donating $500,000 to wildfire recovery, according to Bustle

Whether or not they really did get married, there’s no denying that the two look happy and enjoyed the holidays. Congrats to both of them!

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Changes Its Policies After A Second Migrant Child Died In Its Custody

After an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy died in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency decided to change its policies in order to keep other migrant children safe, NBC News reports.

CBP main policy change is “secondary medical checks” on all kids in the agency’s custody, with priority given to children under 10 years old, according to CNN. It’s unclear as to what the agency’s “secondary medical checks” will entail.

Felipe Alonzo-Gomez, who was detained with his father, is the second child this month to die in U.S. custody. Earlier this month, 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin died in CBP’s care after being detained with her father for only 48 hours. According to the Associated Press, the boy was taken to the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico, after a border agent saw signs of illness. The hospital’s doctors diagnosed him with a cold and later determined he had a fever.

“The child was held for an additional 90 minutes for observation and then released from the hospital mid-afternoon on December 24 with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen,” CBP said in a statement, obtained by CNN. The child began vomiting on Monday night and returned to the hospital for further evaluation. He later died on Christmas morning. The official cause of death is currently unknown.

In a statement provided to CNN, CBP said it will start to work with other agencies to offer more medical attention to migrants in the future. The agency plans to work with the Department of Health and Human Service, the Department of Defense, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It will also work with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to quicken the transfer process to long-term detention and housing centers, or it will grant children supervised release.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, chairman-elect of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus who also identified Alonzo-Gomez on Tuesday, offered his condolences to the young boy’s family and criticized CBP’s and the administration’s treatment of asylum-seekers.

“While the CBP notified Congress within 24 hours as mandated by law, we must ensure that we treat migrants and asylum-seekers with human dignity and provide the necessary medical care to anyone in the custody of the United States government,” Castro said in a statement, according to CNN.

In regards to the Trump administration’s policy of turning people away from legal ports of entry or “metering," Castro said in a statement that it’s “putting families and children in great danger.”

The CBP said that the Department of Homeland Security was bringing in more children than expected, and that more medical services would be needed at legal entry points.

“Many questions remain unanswered, including how many children have died in CBP custody,” Castro said.
