Is It Finally Time to Ban Tanning Beds?

With movies like Final Destination and social media sensations such as the Tanning Mom, often the dangers of tanning beds can be associated with a comedic effect, which means that in many cases, the actual health risks of tanning can be lost—and it's not something that should be taken lightly.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a new set of regulations which include banning the use of tanning beds from minors, having tanning salons require a risk acknowledgment signature before use, inserting an emergency shut off switch in each bed and only installing stronger bulbs with the permission of the FDA, all in the effort to decrease one’s likelihood of skin cancer, which has shown a 3 percent increase over the last ten years.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, melanoma (the worst form of skin cancer) is 59 percent more likely to develop in those who use tanning beds; the potential risks of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, eye and skin damage. “Today’s action is intended to help protect young people from a known and preventable cause of skin cancer and other harms,” said acting FDA Commissioner Stephen Ostroff, M.D in the FDA’s report. “Individuals under 18 years are at greatest risk of the adverse health consequences of indoor tanning.”

While the regulations are still in the proposed stage, we can only hope that most people will take the risks seriously, because even if they aren’t visible, they’re still harmful.
