It's likely that one of the first things you do when you wake up each morning is check your phone for texts. Texting is a great way to stay in-the-know and communicate with people—but is all the texting we do becoming a problem?

Multiple studies have been conducted that link texting to lower grades, specifically while college students did homework or were in class. Keeping your phone by your side or texting friends during a lecture may not seem like a huge issue, but "compulsive texting" can be a bigger deal than it appears to be.

Since texting is such a huge part of our daily lives, we may find it hard to put the phone down and focus on class or sleep, for that matter. Texting and internet use before bed have been linked to sleep issues since students stay up late on their phones or get woken up by them during the night.

In 2012, 75 percent of all teenagers texted, and the average number of texts sent per day was 60. According to the New York Times, a new study administered looked at problematic texting among eighth-grade students. Among 356 students, 12 percent of the girls were compulsive texters, most sending more than 100 texts messages per day.  Fourteen percent of the girls who were compulsive texters reported being C students, while only 4 percent of average texters reported being C students.

Is texting getting in the way of your grades? An experiment conducted among college students found that students who didn't text during class ended up remembering more and doing better on a quiz—You may want to think twice before pulling your phone out during lecture.
