Shannon Lamb, a man suspected in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend as well Delta State University history professor Ethan Schmidt, was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday night. Lamb was also a professor at Delta State.
University police chief Lynn Buford told the New York Times that Lamb ran into a wooded area after being pulled over by police, and that a gunshot was heard soon after. Lamb was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Delta State campus ended its lockdown early Tuesday morning. The Clarion-Ledger reports that more than 70 students, faculty and staff are attending counseling sessions in the aftermath of the incident, and that the university plans to resume classes Wednesday.
