A Woman Will Replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 Bill

There’s been a lot of hubbub in the media recently about potentially taking Andrew Jackson off the $20 and replacing him with a historically significant woman. It turns out that this was a bit of an overstatement, as Jackson will not be sharing his bill any time soon. Instead a woman will be replacing Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill. While placing the woman on the $10 instead of the $20 bill has disappointed some woman’s rights advocates, most are still calling this a step in the right direction.

‎”While it might not be the twenty dollar bill, make no mistake, this is a historic announcement and a big step forward,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen told The Wall Street Journal.

This will be the first time in over 100 years that a woman has been featured on U.S. paper money. Martha Washington is the only woman to have held the post for a time in the 19th century. The female to replace Hamilton is still unknown but such women as Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks are strong contenders. The choice will be announced later this year.

This new woman will appear at a historically significant time. 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment. Unbelievably, we may have our first female president soon as well.

Having a woman on paper money is extremely meaningful because it gives young girls and women a historical female role model, something that is largely overlooked when it comes to the teaching of history. So collegiettes, who do you think deserves the honor of gracing the $10 bill?
