The 7 Struggles of Being a Sarcastic Person

You have the best poker face in the world. You often say things you don’t mean to be taken literally, and people just figure out what you really mean half the time. So you’re a sassy, sarcastic betch. That’s your style; it’s what you do. But the rest of the world doesn’t seem to understand the struggles you go through as a naturally sarcastic person.

1. Whenever you’re just trying to be funny, basically no one gets it.

Sarcastic jokes are an acquired taste. And somehow, no one else seems to get that. It’s a joke, people! Can’t they tell you’re kidding? Every time you try to be funny, everyone just stares back at you, wondering how to interpret the situation. Cue the crickets.

2. Sometimes you genuinely cannot help it.

You didn’t ask to be naturally sarcastic; like Lady Gaga said, you were born this way *hey.* There are some moments when you wish you could maybe lay off the sarcasm a little bit, but it is ingrained in you, and you can’t stop won’t stop.

3. People who don’t know you assume you’re a b*tch.

You can come off as a little rude at times, and you’re aware of it. But once people get to know you, they realize it’s just part of your charm. They learn to love your rugged edges. You’re seriously tired of hearing how “intimidating” you were when people first met you. Underneath your sarcastic facade is a heart of gold. Why can’t they understand?

4. You have little patience for people who don’t understand sarcasm.

Seriously, have these people never heard of sarcasm before? It can be downright frustrating constantly having to explain yourself. Sure, sometimes your sarcasm is a little more discreet than others, but when you're laying it on super thick and people still stare at you like you have a third head, you just want to stare right back. It's called sar-cas-m.

5. No one trusts what you say.

The rare moments when you actually try to be serious get lost in confusion because no one knows whether you’re being sarcastic or not. Literally everything you say is questioned. Your friends just stare at you with a raised eyebrow as you try to explain that yes, it is in fact raining outside, and you weren’t just kidding.

6. You’re basically the worst at receiving compliments.

Just like no one trusts you, you're sometimes wary of trusting others. Sarcasm is a hard language to understand, and even though you’re basically fluent in it, the occasional unexpected compliment will throw you off. Does your hair actually look nice, or was that a blatant dig at the fact that you haven’t showered today?

7. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

It is what it is, and if people can’t deal, then that’s their problem. You’ve accepted the fact that your sarcasm is a part of who you are. So maybe the rest of the world may never fully understand. That just makes you a beautiful, unique creature. If being sarcastic is wrong, we don’t want to be right!
