California Senator Kamala Harris has just announced that she will not be moving forward in the Democratic race for president . Despite her earlier position as a top contender, Harris now joins the 14 other candidates who have rescinded their plans to run. She announced the decision to her staff on Tuesday, and shortly shared the news on Twitter saying, “To my supporters, it is with deep regret—but also with deep gratitude—that I am suspending my campaign today.”

According to The New York Times, Harris' campaign suffered stagnant fundraising and a drop in polling numbers following each Democratic debate. Harris'campaign website revealed she had big plans for the coming election, including strategy for reproductive rights, rent relief, and gun reform. Still, the news definitely comes as a shock, considering just yesterday a video was posted on Harris’ Instagram profile with the caption: “I’m running for president to show all children it is possible.” Clearly things have changed in the past 24 hours.

In a letter explaining the decision, Harris sites lack of financial resources as the reason her campaign is unable to continue. “I’m not a billionaire. I can’t fund my own campaign. And as the campaign has gone on, it’s become harder and harder to raise the money we need to compete,” she wrote.

She ends her statement with an encouraging note to her supporters, letting everyone know that she will not rest in the fight against Donald Trump and for the future of our country. “Let’s keep fighting for the America we believe in, an America free of injustice. An America that we know we can be unburdened by what has been.”

This is a breaking story. Check back with HerCampus.com for more updates.
