Thanks, Birth Control! Day is in November & Here’s Why We’re Celebrating

If there is one day that we are truly grateful for, it’s definitely National Thanks, Birth Control! Day. This important occasion (which was on Wednesday, November 13!) reminds us of what we all know to be true—birth control is a big deal because it helps us better plan our lives and families.

It’s no secret that birth control has completely revolutionized women’s bodily autonomy. In 1972, the Supreme Court made birth control legal for all women—regardless of age or relationship status—and having access to birth control has been a turning point for American women.

Having the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant has played a role in helping us to achieve and pursue our career aspirations. Birth control opened the door to economic opportunity, setting us up for success in our careers. Furthermore, thanks to birth control, we don’t have to choose between having a family and pursuing our career goals. To put this into perspective, before 1972, not a single Fortune 500 company had a female CEO; as of this year, more than 30 women now hold that title—that’s more than ever before.

These reasons alone are more than enough for us to give thanks to our birth control every day, and that’s why we are asking you to say Thanks, Birth Control with us this year.

Her Campus at The University of Pittsburgh hosted a Thanks, Birth Control Day celebration, where we brought together students—like you—who are invested in their sexual health. We discussed topics geared to equip students with helpful knowledge around your birth control choices, so you can be fully empowered to talk with your healthcare provider about your goals and find an option that works best for you.

Having access to birth control can help us to better plan the life we want.
