I’ve never lived outside of Ohio, so moving to Nashville, where I don’t know anyone, was pretty nerve-wracking. I moved for a summer internship in news reporting, and I am so grateful for the opportunity. Though moving was scary, I felt I needed something new and exciting in my life.

I have lived in the Midwest my whole life, so this move to the South is quite a change. The first week, without any family or friends, was a transition, to say the least. Scroll on to find out what happens when you move to a new city.

1. You get homesick

Once I was all moved in and my family left to go back to my hometown, I suddenly felt very lonely and homesick. I looked around my unfamiliar room and felt panic. Here I was, in this foreign city, and I knew no one. I had no idea what this experience would entail, and the uncertainty was too much for me. I wanted to be back home, in my comfortable, familiar space.

What helped me get through this was remembering that I would still see my family through visits, FaceTime, and Skype. I also thought of all the fun, new opportunities I would have in the new city.

2. You feel like you're at freshman orientation

I kid you not, the number of people I met in even one day was ridiculous. Make that 7 days, and I could barely remember the names of all the people I met or all the phone numbers I collected. I felt like it was my first week at college, where I was meeting new people everywhere. Also, you’re the new kid in town, so everyone is excited to meet you. It can be quite overwhelming, but also full of hope for new relationships.

3. You eat... a lot

Dinner is a great way to meet new people. The amount of food I ate last week could probably feed a whole village. When you’re in a new city, though, you want to try the food, and you want to meet people. If there is ever a proper time to pig out, it’s when you move to a new place.

4. Exploring literally everywhere

Because you don’t know anyone or are just beginning to meet people, you do a lot of exploring around the city to get to know it. A great way to do this is to pick a coffee shop close to where you live and walk to a different one each morning. You’ll discover great coffee shops, parks, and places you want to visit with your new friends.

5. Look forward to a new beginning
