Karl Lagerfeld, the Creative Director for Chanel since 1983, has died at age 85. Chanel released a statement this morning on the legendary designer's death, following his absence at Chanel's most recent shows. The fashion world saddened by this unexpected loss and honor his legacy as one of the most influential designers in fashion history.

Lagerfeld, known for his iconic personal style (a slick white ponytail, black sunglasses and crisp suit), became a prolific force of fashion during his 30 years at Chanel. Lagerfeld began his career at Chanel in 1983, tasked with restoring the brand following the death of Chanel herself. It was Lagerfeld's ability to remain true to Chanel's identity while injecting a sense of irreverence and modernity that pushed the brand forward. Under his creative direction, Chanel's iconic double-C logo became a symbol of wealth and status. Through reworking Coco Chanel's key pieces, Lagerfeld revived the brand, turning it into one of the most influential fashion houses in the world. Items like the classic tweed suit, two-toned heels and quilted bag have become staples of a luxury wardrobe.

Lagerfeld was more than just a designer — he was a creative genius and pop culture icon. Outside of Chanel, Lagerfeld was busy designing for Fendi and his own label, Karl Lagerfeld, until his death. This stands as a testament to his immense creativity, as he designed more than 12 individual collections each year. His 2004 collaboration with H&M paved the way for fast-fashion collabs with designers. Lagerfeld loved to step behind the lens, often shooting Chanel's advertising campaigns himself. Lagerfeld's creative vision always shone through Chanel's over-the-top runway shows. There was the time he made a Chanel spaceship, along with the time he built an iceberg in the middle of Paris' Grand Palais. We can't forget about the time he turned the runway into a beach. Incredible, right?

Karl, I will miss your indescribable presence, watching your calm, quiet, genius mind working, your little jokes, amazing stories, and experiencing the clothes, sets, and productions only you could dream up. Thank you for believing in me and for the beautiful, incredible opportunities you brought to my career, but mostly, thank you for giving me the honor of knowing the magic behind the myth. There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. I am overwhelmed with sadness today, but also with so much love, admiration, and gratitude for you. To all his beloved friends and colleagues, and his favorite girl Choupette🐾, my heart is with you. ❤️ Rest In Peace King Karl. I didn’t want this day to come. 💔

Lagerfeld's impact is immeasurable, but it is important to acknowledge Lagerfeld's controversial past. Negative comments on body image and the #MeToo movement are a few to note, reminding us that being an influential figure and performing problematic actions are not mutually exclusive of each other.

With Paris Fashion Week and Chanel's FW '19 show quickly approaching, the world now impatiently waits to see what's next from Chanel. The fashion house announced this morning via Instagram that Virginie Viard, the former Fashion Creation Studio Director at Chanel and Lagerfeld’s "closest collaborator for more than 30 years" will take over as Creative Director. Though Lagerfeld's creative vision, keen eye for design, and larger than life personality will be greatly missed, we know his legacy will live on.
