The Oscars are one of the biggest days on the entertainment calendar, and the awards ceremony is quickly approaching. This year, there are a flurry of movies that are being talked about and that have been nominated for one of the most esteemed awards in the entertainment business. However, it is quite understandable to get overwhelmed by it all, especially since there are so many movies and so little time left before the big awards ceremony. But there is no need to fret, as we have created this guide so you know exactly what you need to watch before tuning into this year’s Oscars.

The Favourite

Starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, The Favourite is a loosely historically based drama by film director Yorgos Lanthimos. This dark comedy is about Queen Anne (played by Colman), her closest adviser and friend Lady Sarah (played by Weisz) and the young woman (played by Stone) who tries to upset Lady Sarah’s coveted spot upon joining the household, as the two women fight for the queen’s financial, sexual and emotional attention, Refinery29 reports. The film, while funny, is complex, and depicts what is takes to attain power.

All three ladies have been nominated for an Oscar, with Colman receiving a nomination for Lead Actress, and Weisz and Stone both receiving a nomination for Supporting Actress. It is also currently tied for most Oscar nominations, with a total of 10.

Vice

Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell, Vice tells the story of former Vice President Dick Cheney’s ascent up the political ladder. Since everyone portrayed in the film was a public figure, Vice almost feels like watching a historical reel of some sort. The film, which was written and directed by Adam McKay, seems to get to the point that Cheney (played by Bale) is a heartless man, and that America should not have chosen him and George W. Bush (played by Rockwell) for the White House, Vox reports.

Bale, Adams and Rockwell have all received Oscar nominations in the Lead Actor, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor categories, respectively.

Bohemian Rhapsody

The film tells the story of the band Queen’s rise to fame, primarily focusing on the legendary frontman Freddie Mercury. The film’s highlight is when the band records the song Bohemian Rhapsody. According to Refinery29, Bohemian Rhapsody brought in over $800 million at the box office, with fans of Queen absolutely delighted by the film.

Rami Malek, who portrays Mercury in the film, has been nominated for Lead Actor.

BlacKkKlansman

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman is about a black detective that infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan, and with the help of his Jewish colleague, takes it down, Vox reports. A true story, the film speaks to today’s current climate with its modern parallels. The film stars John David Washington, Adam Driver (who was nominated for Supporting Actor) and Topher Grace (who portrays KKK grand wizard David Duke).

But best of all? Lee has finally received an Oscar nominated for Best Director.

Green Book

Green Book is inspired by the true friendship between Tony Vallelonga (played by Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American chauffeur, and Don Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali), the black pianist he is hired to drive around on a concert tour through the Deep South in the 1960s. The film is often funny, but definitely has some poignant moments.

According to Vox, the film is up for five Oscars: Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Lead Actor for Viggo Mortensen, Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Film Editing.

Green Book, however, has had its fair share of of controversy and backlash, according to Refinery29.

A Star is Born

For his directorial debut, Bradley Cooper, starring alongside Lady Gaga, tells a heart-jerking musical love story about a fading music star who gives a newcomer the much-needed push she needs to break through, and then soon eclipses him.

The film is filled with memorable songs and outstanding performances, and that has shown with the amount of awards it has already received.

According to Vox, A Star is Born has been received a nomination for Best Picture, as well as eight other nominations: Lead Actress (Lady Gaga), Lead Actor (Bradley Cooper), Supporting Actor (Sam Elliott), Cinematography, Original Song (Shallow), Adapted Screenplay and Sound Mixing.

Roma

One of this year’s most nominated films at the Oscars, with a total of 10 nominations, Roma tells the story of a family living in Mexico City in the 1970s, and a girl named Cleo (played by newcomer Yalitza Aparicio) who works for them. According to Vox, the film focuses on the struggles and the strengths of the women in the family, with this carefully told story set against the backdrop of political unrest in Mexico City.

Director Alfonso Cuarón, who also served as cinematographer, has received nominations in the Directing and Cinematography categories, becoming the only director in history to ever be nominated for both at the same time. Aparicio has also been nominated for an Oscar (Lead Actress). It is also the first film from a streaming service to ever be nominated for Best Picture.

The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24th. Until then, happy movie watching!
