HC Wake-Up Call: Government Shutdown Update, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Already Working Post-Surgery, & David Hogg’s College Decision

Government Shutdown Could Continue Well Into The New Year 

The partial government shutdown has moved into its third day with still no agreement between the White House and congressional leaders on a deal. 

Many are questioning when the partial government shutdown will end. Well, one member of Trump’s administration has a prediction. “I don’t think things are going to move very quickly here the next couple of days,” said acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney on Sunday in an interview with Fox News Sunday. “It’s very possible this shutdown will go beyond the 28th and into the new Congress.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell adjourned the Senate on Saturday with no plans to return to business until Thursday, leaving over 420,000 employees without pay through the holiday, USA Today reports. But Mulvaney said that not much would be accomplished during the holiday. 

“It’s Sunday right now, and the government is shut down mostly on a Sunday anyway,” he said. “Government is shut down tomorrow anyway because it’s the federal holiday and Tuesday is Christmas, again, another federal holiday. So, Wednesday is really the first day that this kicks in.” 

He also implied that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi might be a reason for the spending bills delay. “I think she’s now in that unfortunate position of being beholden to her left-wing, where she cannot be seen agreeing with the president on anything until after she’s speaker,” Mulvaney said. “If that’s the case, I think there’s a chance we go into the next Congress.”

But Pelosi suggested in a tweet that “Democrats have offered Republicans multiple proposals to keep the government open, including one that already passed the Senate unanimously, & all of which include funding for strong, sensible, & effective border security—not the president’s ineffective and expensive wall.”

Mulvaney said on Fox News Sunday that the president wasn’t giving up on funding for the border wall, but that he did offer a “counter offer.” Trump reportedly requested between $1.3 billion and $5 billion in funding for border security Mulvaney told Fox News.

It’s unclear how long the shutdown will last. 

Court Says Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is Already Working After Surgery

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is already up and working following cancer surgery, the Associated Press reports. 

Kathy Arberg, who is a spokeswoman for the court, said on Sunday that Justice Ginsburg is still in New York at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The Supreme Court justice went into surgery on Friday to remove two malignant growths in her left lung, according to the Associated Press. Her doctors found no remaining evidence of the disease. 

Justice Ginsburg casted the deciding vote on Trump’s asylum restrictions from her hospital bed, according to NBC News. The policy would have temporarily blocked immigrants from applying for asylum if they entered the U.S. anywhere but official points of entry, CNN reported.  

A federal judge in California had blocked Trump’s asylum ban, and it was later upheld by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court in a 5-4 vote. While she was hospitalized, Ginsburg was ultimately the deciding vote.

This is the third time that Ginsburg has underwent treatment for cancer. She received treatment in 1999 for colorectal cancer and 2009 for pancreatic cancer, NPR reports. Even with her health problems, NBC News reports that Ginsburg has not missed any Supreme Court arguments in the last 25 years on the bench. As of right now, there’s no information on when she will return home. 

Parkland Survivor & Gun Control Activist David Hogg To Attend Harvard University 

Parkland shooting survivor and gun control activist David Hogg announced plans to attend Harvard University in the fall, The Boston Globe reports. 

He tweeted on Saturday that he was going to the prestigious university and will major in political science next year. “Thank you for all the well wishes,” Hogg tweeted. “I’ll be attending Harvard in the fall with a planned major in Political Science.” The 18-year-old activist previously mentioned plans to take a gap year off from school to work on a political movement against gun violence.

Hogg wasn’t the only Parkland survivor and gun control activist who was accepted into the university. Jaclyn Corin was also accepted to Harvard. She tweeted a screenshot of her early acceptance letter earlier this month, and wrote “HARD WORK PAYS OFF.”
