Social media has a significant role in the average college student’s life—it’s almost a routine at this point. Either you wake up and your first instinct is to mindlessly scroll through Instagram, or you’re clicking on news links via Twitter throughout the day. Social media has become such an integral part of our lives that recently, it’s been parlayed into careers. Social media influencers, flaunting their fabulous lives all over our Instagram feeds (cue jealousy), are becoming an increasing number among online celebrities these days. This growing number is inspiring the creation of influencer marketing companies—including Stargazer, a new start-up devoted to the branding of influencers.
Leiliani Sanchez, the Lead Campaign Director for Poshmark at Stargazer, talks to Her Campus today about the importance of good team chemistry, letting go of perfectionist tendencies, and how it feels to have a leadership role at Stargazer at only 23 years old.
Her Campus: What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?
Leiliani Sanchez: Every day is usually different at the office, but my typical tasks include checking emails, chatting with influencer managers, and delegating tasks to my team. As a start-up company, we are always learning and growing, which makes every day a new adventure.
HC: What is the best part of your job?
LS: The best part of my job is definitely the co-working environment. Our company, Stargazer, is based out of The LAB Miami, which is an awesome creative working space for entrepreneurs and creatives. My company really thrives off of working as a team and interacting with the other businesses in the office. I love constantly being around fun and hard working people.
HC: What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?
LS: I actually started off as an intern at Stargazer. After working for two days, they offered me a full-time position. Six months later and I was promoted to my current role as the lead campaign director for Poshmark. I got my internship by being persistent and following up with the company’s CEO. I would advise any college graduate to always follow-up after an interview.
HC: What words of wisdom (well-known quotes, an anecdote from your boss) do you find most valuable?
LS: My boss Antoine Forest always says “done is better than perfect.” As a perfectionist, this was hard to grasp at first, but being part of the start-up community the challenge is getting everything done because there are so many little things to get done and accepting everything can’t be perfect is the only way.
HC: What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?
LS: When I first became the lead campaign director for Poshmark, I got overwhelmed with pressure to maintain the success of the campaign. With the support of my team, I realized that I couldn’t do everything on my own, especially for such a huge campaign. It was important that as a leader, I learned how to delegate tasks effectively and communicate with my team.
HC: What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?
LS: Becoming the lead campaign director at 22 was a pretty surreal moment. If you work hard enough in your career, you can achieve anything.
HC: What do you look for when considering hiring someone?
LS: Aside from skills, we look for individuals with a positive attitude and great mindset. It’s really important at Stargazer that our team clicks and is able to work together happily.
HC: What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?
LS: As a 20-something myself who is going after my dreams, I really believe in the power of manifestation. If you really want something, it will happen.
HC: What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?
LS: The other day I came across a resume that was lacking organization and grammar skills. Learning how to communicate is extremely important, especially in the influencer marketing field. Always make sure you are putting your best foot forward in person and on paper.
