Today in why the fuck would this ever happen, the first test of the federal emergency alert system to cellphones went out. So if you're wondering why you got a text from the president today, you weren't the only one — and if you were less than thrilled about it, you were definitely not the only one.
Tons of people took to the internet to express their frustration, panic, or straight up confusion, resulting in dozens of pretty amazing memes. Nothing makes us all bond quite like taking to Twitter to drag something we're all mad about, and today, it was about this bizarre new system of letting us know something is wrong.
1. First of all, it gave most of us minor heart attacks.
Shout to Trump for giving everybody a heart attack in class today with the alert thing

Because who expects their phone to start aggressively screaming in the middle of class?
2. Others were creeped out.
What kinda state-run media BS is this presidential text message?

Something about a text from the federal government just feels WAY too weird.
3. Then came the made-up tweets.

Aka some serious fictional LOLs.
4. Our first thought was fuckboys, too.
we thought "u up" texts from fuckboys were bad, now we have trump texting us directly, SOS
— Her Campus (@HerCampus) October 3, 2018
Like, can we just NOT?
5. And the fact that it happened on Mean Girls Day was... well-suited.

This is never gonna be fetch.
6. Others used this as a chance to highlight important issues.

Rightfully so.
7. And to remind us of just why getting tweets in this particular time is so jarring for some.

Harsh, but true.
