Literally Everything You Need To Know About Beyonce's Historic 'Vogue' Takeover

The Vogue September issue is known to be one of the most important fashion publications of the year, and this year’s is no exception: Beyonce is gracing the cover again (she was also the cover subject back in September 2015), but she’s not going with the status quo.

Beyonce’s return to Vogue is making waves for a couple of different reasons—here’s what you need to know.

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

1. She hired the first black photographer in Vogue’s cover history

Is it ridiculous that Vogue has been around for 126 years and has never had a black photographer shoot the cover? Yes, absolutely. Bey must’ve recognized that too, because she tapped 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, an Atlanta-based photographer, to take on the huge task of shooting her cover image, CNN reports.

Mitchell is still quite young, but that doesn’t mean he’s not accomplished: according to The Cut, he has worked with brands like Givenchy and Marc Jacobs, and also shot the photos and videos for Teen Vogue’s March For Our Lives feature. He’s clearly got the talent and although The Huffington Post speculates that he would not have been Vogue EIC Anna Wintour’s top pick, I’m so excited to see how he captures Beyonce for this cover.

2. She has the most control ever given to a Vogue cover subject

The Cut also reports that Beyonce and Vogue signed a contract to negotiate the terms of the September issue, and Bey now has “unprecedented control” over things. The Huffington Post explains that she now gets to choose the photos of her on the cover and inside the magazine, as well as write the captions. Considering Vogue is such a tightly run ship and Wintour has always chosen the photos and outfits of her models, this is huge. Even when Bey last appeared on the September issue cover in 2015, the photographer (Mario Testino) was chosen for her and she did not have as much control.

But if anyone could get people to bend to her will on this scale, it’s definitely Beyonce.

3. She won’t be doing an interview

Beyonce is notorious for having a “no-interview policy” that she very rarely breaks, and it looks like even the September issue is not enough to make her change her mind. She didn’t sit down for an interview in 2015 either, according to The Huffington Post, even though it’s generally expected of a cover subject. It looks like Beyonce is keeping a tight grip on her narrative so that things won’t get twisted—it’s a skill that she has mastered throughout her career, and one that, judging by her eternal popularity, seems to still be working.

4. The cover has led to rumors of Anna Wintour’s departure from Vogue

Wintour isn’t leaving Vogue, Reuters reports, despite recent swirling rumors that she would be stepping down from the position she’s held at the magazine since 1988. However, E! News notes that Wintour generally doesn’t let anyone else have much of a say when it comes to the beloved magazine, so the change of heart feels like a goodbye to some.

Whether or not Wintour decides to hang up her hat, it’s clear that Beyonce is intent on shaking things up at Vogue. I, for one, can’t wait to see how this September issue comes out.
