Everything You Need To Know About Trump & Putin's Helsinki Summit

President Donald Trump and President Putin met for a lot longer than expected on Mondays scheduled 90-minute summit in Helsinki, Finland. In the two hour long session, as USA Today reports, a lot went down. Trump said that the two planned to cover “everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear in China.”

The summit began with a one-on-one meeting between Putin and Trump with only translators in the room. After that meeting, they then responded to reporters questions in a joint press conference. The summit is one of the most anticipated and historic meetings between US and Russian leaders in possibly years. But, don't worry, we came prepared to unpack everything

Trump Refused To Answer Any Questions About Russia’s Involvement In 2016 Election. And He Blames The US For Our “Bad Manners”.

Hours before Trump’s meeting with Putin, Trump had sent the worst tweet of his presidency, “Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity, and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!” It is an obvious reference to the Mueller investigation and the recent indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking and leaking information in the 2016 election.

Trump is essentially blaming the US for years of bad relations with Russia. He fails to mention Russia’s annexation of Crimea, interference in the 2016 election, or support for Syria’s authoritarian Assad regime as possible reasons for tensions. Russia’s Ministry Of Foreign Affairs responded to the tweet with, “We Agree”. This basically means they are on the same page now.

But Trump will admit that both sides have “made a mistake”. “I think the U.S has been foolish, I think we’ve all been foolish we all should’ve had this dialogue long time ago,” he said.

According to the New York Times, Trump mentioned the matter to Putin, but he denied any involvement. At the joint press conference, Trump refused to answer a reporter’s question as to whether or not he believed Russia had any interference in the presidential election. He redirected his answer to the misconduct made by Democrats during the campaign, the Times reports.

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,” Trump said in the joint conference.

“President Trump mentioned the so-called interference of Russia in the American elections. I had to reiterate things I said several times: that the Russian state has never interfered, and is not going to interfere, in internal American affairs, including the election process,” Putin said.

According to the Times, he is actually offering Russian intelligence agencies to work with American officers to get down to the bottom of all of this. Awkward, to say the least.

Both Leaders Agreed To Cooperate In The Future...May be?

Putin and Trump have both agreed to improving relations between the countries, whatever that really means.  The two leaders said they were going to cooperate and build better relations on global issues, but they reportedly never mentioned any examples. Though, according to CBS News, they disagreed on many areas in their news conference

For instance, Crimea. Back in 2014, Russia snatched Crimea from the Ukraine. Obama condemned the action, and the EU sanctioned Russia for it. No one recognizes Crimea as a part of Russia, except for countries like Venezuela or Syria according to CBS. Russia also built a bridge from Russia to Crimea in May to help their relationship.

While Trump didn’t say anything about the issue, according to the Times, Putin was asked about Trump’s side.

“The posture of President Trump on Crimea is well known and he stands firmly by it. He continues to maintain that it was illegal to annex it, our viewpoint is different.”

They also continue to disagree, very strongly, on the Iran nuclear deal. Trump withdrew from the deal in May, but Putin still found it to be a success. Who knows if they will actually learn to “cooperate” in the future over these issues.

Side Note: Putin Gave Trump A Soccer Ball As A Literal Metaphor

This probably isn’t as important as the impending future of the US and Russia’s interactions, but it requires at least an honorary mention. Putin gifted the president with a World Cup Soccer ball, and said the “ball is in your court”. The metaphor is real, right now. Trump then proceeded to throw the ball to Melania.

#TreasonSummit Trended On Twitter & It Really Shows That We All Have A Vote Of No Confidence On This

There was a ton of speculation about the success and disastrous outcomes of this summit, before and during.  Trump found this to be “a very good start”  and “the first step towards a brighter future” with frequent dialogue between the two countries, according to CNN

The internet has no confidence that anything will be achieved from this meeting. Hours before the conference the hashtag Treason Summit began to trend, and naturally everyone on Twitter had an opinion on what the hell was going on.

Guys, she literally warned us!

Who is really in charge here?

Where are his priorities?

Puppet or President?

Some Republicans even weighed in with their thoughts.

“I never thought that I would see the day when our president would stand on stage with the Russian president and place blame on the United states for aggression. This is shameful,” tweeted Arizona senator Jeff Flake.

This is just one of many conversations Putin and Trump are most likely going to have. As you can possibly see, it doesn’t look like much was accomplished.
