How to Style a Silk Scarf & Look Instantly More French-Girl Chic

This week on Try the Trend, I endeavored to style silk scarves. I’ve been obsessed with them since high school when one of my friends gave me a bunch of her mom’s vintage scarves. I have no idea why she didn’t want to keep them all for herself, but I’m not complaining.  It’s super exciting to see that they’re becoming more popular in fashion again because they’re so much fun and so versatile!

One of the easiest and most popular ways to wear a silk scarf right now is to just tie it around your neck.

It’s a super easy and fun way to dress up any simple outfit. For example, I paired my light blue and pink scarf with a navy long sleeve tee, my favorite high-waisted denim, and some simple, brown sandals, and it immediately took my look from sorta basic to French-girl chic.

Tie it to your bag!

If you like the added flair of the scarf but don’t feel like having something tied around your neck all day, try tying it onto your bag instead. You’ll still get that little boost of chicness, plus your bag will be way more Instagrammable, if that’s your thing.

Tie it around your ponytail.

It instantly dresses up a plain ponytail and makes you look so much more put together. You can wear a scarf around your ponytail with almost any outfit, but my favorite thing to pair it with is a dress and some heeled sandals.

You can also wear a scarf as a belt!

It’ll make your outfit just a little bit more interesting, although it’s definitely just there for aesthetic value — don’t expect it to actually hold up your pants. Tip: Whenever I’m styling a scarf in one of the four ways above, I fold it in half diagonally so that it makes a triangle, and then roll the scarf instead of folding it. That way, it’s thinner and easier to work with!

Last, but not least, I tried wearing a scarf as a top.

I’ve been dying to try this since I saw it on Realisation Par. Styling this one was super easy because it’s meant to be a super casual, breezy look — I just wore it with high-waisted denim and my sandals.

One thing to keep in mind though, is that you will almost definitely need dress tape to hold it down. I stepped out on a particularly breezy day to shoot this look, and for the whole ten minutes I was outside I was really worried I was going to accidentally flash someone. Overall though, super cute, 10/10, would wear again.

I had so much fun styling this trend — especially because I got to try it in so many more ways than I usually wear it! I’d love to see how you all style it too, so make sure you tag @hercampusstyle on Instagram — you may even get reposted! Thanks for reading about how I tried this trend, and make sure to check back in a week for the next one!
