It is always upsetting when a beloved television show is canceled, so it is no wonder that fans of Freeform’s Shadowhunters are desperate to save theirs.
Last week, Freeform announced that the fantasy drama, based on a series of books by Cassandra Clare, would not be renewed, and would instead conclude when the final episodes of season three air in 2019. EW reports that Freeform said in a statement that they were “very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite.” The statement continued on saying, “Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending.”
Even with the promise of that “special two-part finale,” fans were not satisfied and took to social media, launching a #SaveShadowhunters campaign. Many fans shared how the show has had a positive impact on their life, and gave their opinions about storylines that needed to be developed in future seasons.
Well, Just Jared Jr. reports that as of this weekend, #SaveShadowhunters gained a new supporter—the show’s star Katherine McNamara, who voiced her support at Oz Comic Con. “I would love that!” the actress said when asked about the series being saved. “I love the show and I would love to finish it out. Hopefully your tweets will encourage something to happen.”
McNamara seemed to be cautiously optimistic going on to say “If [the hashtags] make a difference, amazing. If not, we’ve got 10 more amazing episodes in the can and we’re gonna shoot the most kickass finale you’ve ever seen.”
Social media campaigns to save canceled shows have worked in the past. Just last year, NBC brought back the low-rated (but dearly beloved) drama Timeless, after it was initially canceled. And these days, there’s always a possibility that a show could be revived after few years.
Here’s hoping that #SaveShadowhunters works! As of now, the final episodes will air on Freeform in 2019.
