After 3 seasons of demon-slaying with a side of romance, Freeform’s mystical teen drama, Shadowhunters, will sadly not be renewed for a new season.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, the show revolves around 18-year-old Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), as she discovers that she comes from a line of Shadowhunters, half-human/half-angel figures responsible for ridding the world of demons. The series, based on Cassandra Clare’s books The Mortal Instruments, was unable to keep viewership up and the network had to make the tough call to wrap things up come spring 2019.
"We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favorite,” the network said in a statement. “However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season."
Before you start binge re-watching your favorite episodes in nostalgic despair, there is a sliver lining in the midst of this bitter news because Freeform has announced its decision to finish the show off with the bang it deserves through an additional 2-hour finale episode, along with the 10 episodes set to air.
"We look forward to the final chapter of this breakthrough drama," the network added.
Props to Freeform for sticking it out and providing fans some consolation by giving Shadowhunters the ending it deserves.
