Did you know they were making a live-action Dora the Explorer movie? Because that's one piece of entertainment news I surely missed!

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly reported that Isabela Moner will play the titular character in Paramount Picture’s live-action Dora film, which will be released in 2019. For those unfamiliar with the #iconic series, EW describes the series, which originally aired on Nickelodeon, as a show about “a 7-year-old Mexican-American girl who takes on a series of adventures alongside her monkey and talking backpack.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the live-action film would focus on a teenage Dora “who moves to the city to live with her cousin Diego.”

Moner, whose previous credits include Transformers: The Last Knight and this summer’s upcoming Sicario: Day of the Soldado, is excited to take on the role. “I grew up watching the show, and for me, especially as a Latina, Dora was an amazing role model—she is a strong, adventurous, and fun-loving girl. I can’t wait to put on the backpack and begin her next adventure,” Moner said.

Based on the creative team alone, the live-action Dora is shaping up to be one of the more interesting films of 2019.

Michael Bay (yes, Transformers Michael Bay) is serving as executive producer; Nicholas Stoller, director of popular R-rated comedies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors, has written the script; and James Bobbin, director of The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, will direct. No word on additional casting yet, but based on the range of everyone attached to this film, I can't wait to see who they bring on as Diego.

Dora the Explorer is slated to hit theaters, August 2, 2019.
