What to Wear to a Music Festival If You’re Not Into Showing Skin

As a quick Google search for “festival street style” will show you, it can feel like music festival fashion and baring it all go hand-in-hand — which is all well and good, but what if you’re hesitant to hit Coachella or Lollapalooza in an outfit that shows tons of skin? (And still want to stay relatively cool in those hot summer temps?) Luckily it turns out there *are* ways to do festival fashion without bikinis and bralettes. Read on for outfit ideas that will get you all the way through a weekend at your favorite fest.

Make it a maxi

Few things scream effortless, easygoing music festival ~vibes~ quite like maxi dresses and skirts — and luckily, their length also means they’re great for those of us who aren’t quite as keen on showing skin. A pretty white eyelet slip dress, paired with strappy sandals and an on-trend woven hat or bag is understated in the best way.

Get creative with layers

While layering might seem off limits in the 90 degree summer heat of most music festivals, if you’re willing to get creative, there are tons of ways to add layers (and coverage!) without adding warmth.

Kimonos may have ruled the festival street style scene over the last few years, but there’s a way to get the same flowy look with a fresh update: layering a button-down dress over your favorite pair of jean shorts. Unbutton it up to your belly button to show off a pair of high-waisted jean shorts — and as much (or as little!) skin as you’re comfortable with.

A mesh or sheer long-sleeve top can also add a chic touch when layered under overalls or a denim dress, all while making you feel less like you’re baring it all. A white version feels especially appropriate for summer, but don’t be afraid to opt for one with some cool glitter or rhinestone details!

Try a twin set

Get matchy-matchy and opt for a two-piece set! You’ll save yourself the struggle of having to actually plan an outfit, and there are tons of sets that offer higher necklines or long, flowy pants while only showing a sliver of your midriff. We’re all about gingham this spring, so why not try a red checked version of the look?

All in one

When in doubt, a jumpsuit will always provide both high coverage and high style in an all-in-one outfit. Opt for a full-length silhouette in a lightweight fabric with a cami top that still allows you to stay cool in the heat and show a little shoulder. We love the stripes (which will make your legs appear miles long) and bow detail on this one from Forever 21.

With the right approach, festival dressing doesn't have to synonymous with super skimpy styles. Happy festival season!
