Word has just gotten out that Swedish DJ Avicii has died at the age of 28.

Avicii’s publicist released the following statement, according to TMZ. "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman, this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th,” his publicist said.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given."

Avicii was one of the most famous DJs in the EDM world. His song “Wake Me Up” featuring Aloe Blacc spent 21 weeks in the top ten of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It stayed on the chart 53 weeks overall and was the first Dance/Electronic song to be on the chart for over a year. His other hit songs included “Hey Brother” and “Without You.”

He was nominated for Grammys for Best Dance Recording in 2011 and 2012.

Avicii’s fame brought him notoriety as a pop culture reference as well. In Mike Posner’s 2016 hit song, the singer claims he “took a pill in Ibiza/ to show Avicii (I) was cool.” The DJ had a great sense of humor about the whole thing.

Though the news just broke, fans have already been flooding social media, mourning the loss of the beloved DJ.

Avicii leaves a legacy in the EDM community that will live for years and years to come, inspiring other musicians to pursue their own passions.
