Yesterday, Janelle Monáe dropped a female-directed, girl gang-centric music video for her feminist bop, “Pynk” – and this video is full of looks. From Janelle’s hot pink eyeliner to her structured dress with pink fur sleeves, the major style details are a serious statement. She also wore vagina pants in the video, in case you didn't get the message about ~celebrating women~.
And yes, she birthed Tessa Thompson out of those pants too.
Aside from the vagina pants, the video also features underwear embroidered with powerful statements that Monáe and her clique wear.
With panties reading “Sex Cells,” “Great Cosmic Mother,” and “I Grab Back,” the video’s stylists were straight on with a set of clothing items that are timely for the modern feminist. These outfits, like all of the imagery in the video, back up Monáe’s messaging. Though no longer in the description of the video, Vox reports that the music video was originally accompanied by the following caption: “‘Pynk’ is a brash celebration of creation. self love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere…”
It’s also worth noting that, even though vaginas played a starring role on screen during the music video, Monáe intends for the song to be inclusive to women without those parts, too.
Thank you to the incomparable & brilliant @TessaThompson_x for helping celebrate US (no matter if you have a vagina or not) all around the world ! We see you . We celebrate you . I owe you my left arm T . Xx 👄💞#PYNK💗 https://t.co/cUNgeWk52I

“Pynk” is the third music video and song released from Monáe’s upcoming album, “Dirty Computer,” which will be released in full on April 27, and needless to say, we can't wait for the rest.
