While many (like CNN, The New York Times and Twitter) were critical of former White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s appearance at the Emmys on Sunday, one person supposedly supported the cameo: President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Spicer talked about his former boss’s reaction to his appearance on television’s biggest night. “He was very supportive,” Spicer said of Trump. “He thought I did a great job. It was very reassuring.”
Many criticized Spicer’s appearance alongside host Stephen Colbert (and in front of Saturday Night Live impersonator Melissa McCarthy), saying the telecast normalized Spicer and aided in his attempt to rehab his image after a turbulent six months working for the Trump administration.
Please don't normalize Sean Spicer. #Emmys

Others found the joke, or at least the audience’s reactions, downright hilarious.

Spicer has been making the media rounds as of late, including an interview with Jimmy Fallon, but he denies that he's trying to help his public image. “I feel very good with my image. I’m very happy with myself,” he said on GMA. “I am able to go out and explain a lot of things now, but I’m not on a tour. I’m out having some fun.”
While Trump may have been “supportive” of Spicer’s appearance at the Emmys, he took to Twitter to bash the award show's ratings.
I was saddened to see how bad the ratings were on the Emmys last night - the worst ever. Smartest people of them all are the "DEPLORABLES."
