“The only color of clothing I own is black,” “I like my clothes the same color of my soul—black,” “black is the best color to wear every season.” You all know the girl I’m talking about. The girl who has chosen to only wear black clothing for the rest of her life, who not only takes this decision very seriously, but as a key part of her identity.
An all-black wardrobe can be styled in many different ways. Sometimes it can be gothic-chic, and other times, it can project a “New York fashion girl” aesthetic. And for us mere mortals, it simply means that the only clothes you can bother putting on for your 9 a.m. class are your black leggings and trusty black oversized hoodie.
Kendall Jenner rocked this trend on Memorial Day, styling it in her usual “model off-duty” vibe. The trick to coming off stylish instead of plain or frumpy while wearing all black? Texture, according to Vogue!
If you look carefully, each item in Jenner’s complicated outfit consists of a different type of fabric. She mixed her denim Citizens of Humanity jeans with patent 3.1 Phillip Lim heeled booties, and an incredibly detailed Beau Souci jacket that combined denim, feathers and lace!
When you mix different patterns, the trick to looking chic, and not crazy, is to keep all of the patterns within the same color scheme. The same rules apply to mixing textures, especially those that run a bit on the wild side (feathers, anyone?).
Take a cue from the eldest Jenner sister and step up your all-black-everything game by getting creative with textures in a way that's still in the color comfort zone!
