Shine Line Hair Is the New Colorful Instagram Trend You Need to Know About

In the world of hair, everything goes. Pastel hair, rainbow roots, mermaid hair... even Unicorn Frappuccino hair have become just as common as your run-of-the-mill brown hair; with pink counting as a “neutral” and nothing being too wild. It seems like every week, beauty and hair influencers are finding a new way to dye hair in different patterns and combinations. The latest? Shine Line hair

Unlike Unicorn Frap hair, this trend isn’t one that just appeared out of the blue. The hashtag #shineline started all the way back in 2014, when #hairgoals were just a bit different. Aura Friedman, a New York-based colorist told Allure that she "wanted to create the effect that a laser beam is hitting your hair at a certain spot,” when she bleached a horizontal strip of hair from ear to ear.

However, just like everything in 2017, the louder, and more colorful the better, as colorists have adapted this trend to include a modern, rainbow update. New Hampshire colorist Stephanie Lawrence has taken to Instagram to demonstrate her shine line skills, and I'm sure that plenty of people are showing Stephanie's work to their stylists for them to recreate.

Want shine line hair? Instead of blending colors together, ask your stylist to horizontally stripe each color, to create a blocky effect. Apply any colors of the rainbow so that they appear as though light is hitting them. Generally, the roots and the ends of the hair are the same color.

Don’t worry, Lawrence isn’t the only stylist who’s able to create this effect. Researching the hashtag #shineline on Instagram is sure to give you all the inspiration that you’re looking for.

While shine line hair looks stunning in these Instagram photos, I’d be worried what this trend would look like IRL. Of course the color looks amazing when it's fresh out of the salon. However, I’d be curious to see how it would look on a more casual day, when you haven’t had time to expertly curl your hair, or, even more relatably, on those days where your hair is stuck in a ponytail for the third day in a row (hello, exam season!) There’s no denying that colorful hair, bleach and detailed dye jobs are high maintenance, so you can assume that if you’re sporting the #shineline hair trend, you won’t have the option to skip a month at the salon, or to have too many lazy hair days.
