Soon there'll be one less doctor on our TVs: Entertainment Weekly reports that The Mindy Project's sixth season, which will premiere in September, will be the Hulu comedy’s final season. Um, can I start my mourning period now?
“It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind The Mindy Project,” said Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, in a statement. “This series has been part of Hulu since we launched the service and, thanks to Mindy’s incredibly unique voice and vision, has remained one of our most popular and beloved series over the past five years.”
Fans almost lost the show once before when its original network, Fox, chose to cancel it after its third season. But Hulu saved us all by deciding to adopt the show as its own. Since then, catching up on Mindy Lahiri’s dating antics and career mishaps has been one of my favorite ways to escape real life for a bit.
Mindy Kaling, the show’s star, creator and executive producer, spoke with EW about the decision to end the series next year. “I think the timing is exactly right,” she said, referring to—SPOILER—her character’s marriage as the perfect point at which to leave Mindy behind. “The final season is the final time—it’s the best time—to confront what that reality is for her…We started this series when she was single, and now she’s married and has a kid and she has a stepdaughter, and it kind of just felt like [a few] more episodes was all we needed to wind this down.”
If you aren’t crying yet, don’t worry because Mindy went straight for the heartstrings later in the interview. “I have been delighted by how much the show has made an impact on young women, particularly young minority women,” she shared. “They’ll come up to me on the subway, they come up to actors on the show, and they’ll talk about how much they feel like Mindy Lahiri or how the show is saying something that they’re thinking but are too scared to say aloud. I think that’s really great.”
Thanks for all of the laughs and inspiration, Mindy. I will watch The Mindy Project’s last season with a box of tissues nearby.
