Selena Gomez Gets Real About Mental Health, & You Need to Pay Attention

Selena Gomez has had an exciting start to 2017, causing a stir with her new relationship with The Weeknd and hinting that she has started recording new music. Now, in a new Vogue interview, Selena has reminded us why we still love her after all these years: the star isn’t afraid to get real about mental health.

In the piece, Selena opens up about canceling the remainder of her "Revival" tour in 2016 to receive treatment at a psychiatric facility. “My self-esteem was shot,” she reveals. “I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable enough.” Um, who can’t relate to that?

Dealing with things like a growing, older audience and becoming the most followed Instagram user also contributed to Selena’s stress over the past few years. “I wanted to say that life is so stressful, and I get the desire to just escape it,” she explains. “But I wasn’t figuring my own stuff out, so I felt I had no wisdom to share. And so maybe I thought everybody out there was thinking, This is a waste of time.”

Selena shares that there should be no shame in taking time off to figure yourself out, which is always a great reminder no matter who it comes from. Although she executive-produced the new Netflix miniseries 13 Reasons Why, she doesn’t have too much else planned for the immediate future—a relaxing break we think she totally deserves!

"We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down,” Selena says. “We also need to feel allowed to fall apart."

We couldn’t say it any better. Thanks for always being an advocate for self-care, Selena.
