Trump Made Some Confusing Statements During His Visit With the Prime Minister of Israel

On Wednesday afternoon, President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met at the White House to discuss several issues for the first time since Trump took office. The two parties were very friendly toward each other, taking the time to snap a few pics and post them on Twitter.

When it came time to discuss the one-state or two-state solutions for Israel and Palestine, Trump seemed neutral on the issue according to USA Today, stating, “I’m looking at two-state and one-state and I like the one that both parties like. I can live with either one.” For those who don’t know, the two-state solution calls for a Palestinian nation running alongside Israel. The U.S. has endorsed a two-state solution for 50 years, making Trump's statement seem pretty flippant.

Though Trump said he’d be agreeable to either solution, a Palestinian official warned that if the two-state solution isn’t pursued, peace in the Middle East will not be possible. “If the Trump Administration rejects this policy it would be destroying the chances for peace and undermining American interests, standing and credibility abroad,” Hanan Ashrawi, the spokeswoman for the Palestinian delegation to the 1991 Madrid peace conference, told CBS News.

According to USA Today, Trump also said he’d like to see Netanyahu hold back on settlements along the West Bank, and mentioned that he's looking into moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump and Netanyahu gave a press conference, during which an Israeli reporter asked a question about anti-Semitism. "Since your election campaign, and even after your victory, we've seen a sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents across the United States," the reporter said, according to Cosmopolitan. "And I wonder what do you say to those among the Jewish community in the States and in Israel, and maybe around the world, who believe and feel that your administration is playing with xenophobia and maybe racist tones?"

Trump bizarrely answered by saying, "I just want to say that we are very honored by the victory that we had," and talking about how many electoral votes he got. He then reminded everyone that his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner are Jewish, which also doesn't answer the question.

According to USA Today, Trump stated “he believes he can broker the ultimate deal” in regards to a Middle Eastern peace agreement. We can all have our doubts about Trump’s lack of experience, but at the end of the day, let’s hope an agreement can be met.
