This New Hijab-Friendly Salon Is So Important

Taking a trip to the salon for a little self-pampering is an experience we can all appreciate—or can we? Instead of limiting your salon choices solely based on who can blend highlights the best or give the best blowout, imagine having to search through salons that would accommodate something as simple as your religious beliefs. This has been the case for many Muslim women in America who battle with having to remove their hijab and allow their normally hidden hair to be revealed to a room full of people, some of whom might be an unrelated male. Now, thanks to Huda Quhshi, there's another option

Since Quhshi knows this struggle all too well, she decided to open a salon called Le'Jemalik, Arabic for "for your beauty," to help minimize the stress associated with getting a hair service. The salon is set to open to its women-only clientele on January 29 in Brooklyn, and aims to provide a safe place for Muslim women to remove their hijab without compromising their modesty. According to Refinery29, the servicing stations will even be out of sight from windows, which will further minimize the chance of men passing by and catching a glimpse of the women.

The opening of this salon is an exciting moment for Muslim women everywhere. Not only is there finally an alternative to running to the back of a salon with wet hair as Quhshi once did, but this opening offers some recognition for the true need for places like this across the country. Your move, hair stylists everywhere.
