Lena Dunham has never been one to shy away from voicing her opinion, even if it involves a controversial topic. A few days ago, the Girls actress once again faced backlash after criticizing NY Giants athlete Odell Beckham Jr. During an interview with Amy Schumer, Lena discussed her experience at this year's prestigious Met Gala—and made some rather obnoxious comments about her encounter with Odell.
"I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, 'That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a dog.' It wasn't mean—he just seemed confused." But Lena didn't stop there. She continued to make even more assumptions about Odell's behavior that night.
"The vibe was very much like, 'Do I want to fuck it? Is it wearing a … yep, it's wearing a tuxedo. I'm going to go back to my cell phone.' It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes,'" Lena said.
Obviously, people criticized Lena for her assumptions. It certainly doesn't help that black men have faced a history of accusations (often based off false narratives) against white women.
Lena Dunham's arrogance always amazes me. MAYBE he wasn't thinking about your ass at all. Get over yourself, girl. https://t.co/sihPKZz33c

So Lena Dunham gets ignored by OBJ and then calls him a racist and a misogynist, all while using racially motivated stereotypes#Privilege

Later, Lena took to Twitter to explain that her comments stemmed from her own insecurities.
My story about him was clearly (to me) about my own insecurities as an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels & athletes.

Lena then went on to post a lengthy apology to Odell on Instagram, explaining why her words were unfair ignorant.
"The fact is I don't know about his state of mind (I don't know a lot of things) and I shouldn't have acted like I did."
