Why Is the Gender Pay Gap Getting Bigger?

$
0
0

A recent article published by the Wall Street Journal noted that men's earnings are growing twice as fast as women's this year. While men's earnings have grown 2.2 percent this year, women's have grown only .8 percent.

"The lastest data marks the third straight quarter that the increase in male earnings was at least double that of female workers,"WSJ reported. "As a result, women who work full time earned 81.1 cents for every dollar a man earned from July through September. That's down more than a penny from a year earlier."

While states like California are taking steps to close the gender wage gap, this year's pay data is disheartening. We've already seen that even among Ivy League graduates, the pay gap persists. And at current rates, the Institute for Women's Policy Research has reported it'll take most states more than 50 years to close the wage gap.

Not even huge celebrities like our fave Jennifer Lawrence are immune. She recently published an essay titled "Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars?" after famously making less than them in "American Hustle."

Since men's wages are increasing in professional fields, the gender pay gap is growing. How can we stop this?

The 4 Beauty & Life Hacks You Need to Know Now

In college, time and money are precious—and while we know the word “hack” is thrown around a lot, we have four brilliant ideas that could simplify your beauty and health routines for good. We learned all of these at the most unexpected of occasions: College Fashion Week in Washington, D.C.! The event, which was held at the W Hotel in D.C., had a ton of amazing giveaways, performers, and sponsors including European Wax Center and StyleWatch. Read on for how four more of our partners gave us totally helpful ideas to hack your daily routine! If you want to see CFW for yourself—it’s not too late. You can register for our (free!) Atlanta show here—it’s the ultimate college fashion event of the year, and you won’t want to miss it!

1. Get a subscription service for your period

Make your cycle a little more fun (and easy) by subscribing to a monthly feminine hygiene product delivery service like Monthly Gift. Each month, you’ll get a Monthly Gift package filled with pads, tampons and liners (customized to your own preferences!) and of course, chocolate. A subscription service is a great way to be prepared during that time of the month, avoid having to run to CVS at the last minute, and hopefully make your period a bit more bearable!

2. DIY your own lipsticks

Photograph by Christopher Huang

Walking through your drugstore makeup aisle can make you feel like a kid in a candy store—but your college budget isn’t going to appreciate the constant splurges. Trust us, you don’t need ten different lipsticks to get a fab look. At CFW, the Milani Cosmetics team mixed lipstick shades together at their LinkedIn Headshot Station to help you find your perfect hue.  Even if you only own two or three different colors, different ways of blending them together actually means you have several possible shades to choose from and can create totally different beauty looks. Milani’s lipsticks range from creamy neutrals to show-stopping brights—so think of the possibilities if you blend your two faves together! Fun, affordable and gorgeous!

3. Skip the manicure

Photograph by Christopher Huang

Going to a salon for a manicure can be a nice treat—but they’re not cheap and the results never last as long as we hope they will. Enter Jamberry nail wraps. Nail wraps can transform your nail style—they’re super affordable, ridiculously long-lasting and crazy chic. Jamberry’s nail wraps are easy to apply at home with basic nail tools and a heat source. They come in over 300 designs per season, and you can even make custom designs on Jamberry.com. They don’t chip or flake, and it’ll save you a lot of time and money!

4. Get looks for less

Photograph courtesy of Her Campus

As much as you want those over-the-knee Stuart Weitzman boots, you’ll feel so much better if you buy them at a discounted price. At College Fashion Week, college girls strutted their stuff in looks courtesy of Simon. We pulled our runway looks from two Simon Centers in the DC area—Fashion Centre at Pentagon City and Arundel Mills. Not only is Arundel Mills is the largest mall in Maryland (talk about shopping heaven!), but it’s a “mills” which means it has even better prices than outlets! Talk about a money hack!

Want to more beauty and life hacks? Want to see the biggest college fashion event of the season? There’s still time! Register NOW for College Fashion Week Atlanta! You’ll score a free fashion show, an EPIC goody bag and a ton of fun sponsor activations from some of our favorite brands. It’s the fall event you can’t miss!

11 Punny Halloween Costumes

Are you the biggest goofball in your group of friends, and want to find an outfit that will show that off? For all those funny girls out there, consider dressing as a pun this Halloween. Yes, that's right - a pun. These costumes might need a little bit of an explanation, but they're guaranteed to produce some chuckles.

There are endless puns in the world, but we've put together a few clever ideas that also make cute costumes! Punny costumes are also great for those of us who tend to be a little last-minute in our planning. Most of them can be made from materials you'll find around your dorm room, even if they do require a little bit of crafting to get the costume just right. We'll list all the easy ones first, and then we'll list some more intricate punny costumes for those of us who aren't afraid of a challenge!

1. Queen of Hearts

queen of hearts costume
Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Tiara, craft supplies

How-to: Wear whatever outfit you want, but make it fairly neutral. Then, cut out tons of hearts in a variety of colors and put them all over your outfit. Finish off the look with a tiara or plastic crown and you're done!

2. Anchorwoman

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Business casual dress, craft supplies, microphone

How-to: Dress in your favorite business casual outfit (bonus points for adorable pencil skirts!), and tape a large cutout anchor to your back. That's it - you're an anchorwoman! Feel free to carry around a microphone to complete the outfit.

3. Facebook

facebook costume
Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Facepaint

How-to: This is one of the easiest costumes out there, so it's perfect for people who know they won't have much time to get ready. Simply paint the word "BOOK" across your face and you're done. Just like that, you've become the website that you spend hours on every day!

4. Headquarters

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Quarters, headband, hot glue gun

How-to: Although it requires a little bit of crafting, gluing a few quarters onto a headband shouldn't take too long. This is an easy outfit that requires just enough prep so that the glue has time to dry. This outfit is perfect for people who don't love dressing up, and just need to be able to point to their head to prove that they did put a little effort in.

5. Mixed Greens

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Green clothing, craft supplies

How-to: Dig out all the green clothing in your closet, and don't worry about whether or not it matches! Put it all on, in layers, with mismatched socks and accessories. This one is super easy because if you have enough in your wardrobe you don't even have to make any purchases. By the time you're done, you'll look like your favorite salad! Feel free to add some construction paper cutouts of tomatoes and carrots to complete the veggie-friendly look.

6. Tic Tac Toes

Difficulty Level: Easy

Materials: Tic Tacs, hot glue, flats

How-to: Get some cheap flats that you don't mind ruining, and hot glue your favorite flavor of Tic Tacs onto them. This is another super easy outfit, and pun enthusiasts can even pair it with something else, like the idea up above for Headquarters!

7. Well Red

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Red clothing, books

How-to: Dress in an all-red outfit, and carry around your favorite novel - but the more pretentious the title sounds, the better! This one gives you a ton of flexibility, because you can make it as elaborate as you want. Use a permanent marker to write your favorite quotes all over a red t-shirt, or just go crazy with red lipstick and glitter.

8. Photographic Memory

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Disposable cameras, hat, hot glue gun

How-to: This one requires a little bit of prep, but it shouldn't be too hard to execute. The basic idea is to hot glue a bunch of disposable cameras onto a hat. This one can be really fun later for capturing memories, as you can get some funky bird’s eye shots by taking photos with your hat throughout the night!

9. Cereal Killer

Difficulty Level: Medium

Materials: Box of cereal, spoon, pajamas

How-to: Dress in your favorite pajamas and pop open your cereal box. Tear off the top third of the box in a jagged line, making it look like an animal tried to rip it open. Carry around the box and the spoon together all night. To really get into the spooky Halloween spirit, carry a fake weapon with this outfit (you are a cereal killer, after all!). Extra points for messy hair that makes it look like you woke up and just couldn't wait to get some breakfast!

10. Peas Corp Member

Difficulty Level: Difficult

Materials: Peas, craft supplies

How-to: Feel like spreading some peace this Halloween? Become a member of the Peas Corp! Dress in whatever outfit you want, but spend some time making signs with cute sayings on them, like "Love and Peas for Everyone!" March around with your signs all night, and if you want to get really into it, walk around handing out peas as if they were Halloween candy!

11. Ceiling Fan

Difficulty Level: Difficult

Materials: Craft supplies, pom poms, megaphone, face paint

How-to: Pretend you are the absolute number one fan for your favorite team - the Ceilings! Dress as a cheerleader, and spend some time decorating signs and t-shirts that show off your ceiling pride. This costume lets you get really creative, as you can make up chants, team statistics, or anything else you need to complete the outfit. This is really easy to turn into a group activity, too, as you and your friends can dress as an ultimate ceiling fan group. Talk your guy friends into going shirtless and painting "CEILINGS" on their chests!

What other punny costume ideas can you come up with?

The Backstreet Boys' Surprise Performance at Balmain x H&M Was EVERYTHING

Backstreet's back alright! At Balmain and H&M's fashion show in NYC, models Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn strutted their stuff on the runway before being treating to an unexpected surprise ending—a performance from the Backstreet Boys. Needless to say, our '90s boyband feels were in full force last night. We also can't help but wonder why we weren't invited to this epic event.

The iconic band was well-received by the unsuspecting audience as they performed "Backstreet's Back,""Larger Than Life" and "I Want It That Way" without missing a beat. After over 20 years of being a group, we love how much the band seems to enjoy singing and dancing for fans. Check out this video below for proof!

We have a feeling that Kendall and Gigi were a bit excited to be in the presence of BSB...

As it turns, out, famous models can be fangirls just like the rest of us! And it looks like Gigi still can't get over it. "Life complete...," she tweeted, after spotting the photo of her and bestie Kendall caught in the act of fangirling.

Looks like The Backstreet Boys had a blast as well! "Such a pleasure working w/ the amazing @ORousteing. Can't wait to keep working w/ you in the future. #HMBALMAINATION," they tweeted after the event.

I Went Without Makeup For a Year & This is What Happened

From September of last year onwards, I decided to cut out one key habit from my daily routine: I no longer wear makeup. Although I would've thought of this as an impossibility a few years ago, or rather, something I could only contemplate with a discomfort akin to that of someone about to head to her very first bikini waxing session, it has now become a way of life that has made me grow to love and appreciate myself even more.

Despite this, going makeup free hasn't been easy. Sometimes, it means that you'll avoid looking in the mirror (and if you do you might not always love what you see). There will probably be times you'll feel a little self-conscious in front of other people. It goes up and down, and only after a while of getting used to it (say, a few months) will you finally throw in the towel and think, “Hey, everyone I know has seen my real face now, so what the heck.” When you reach that point, you might start feeling uncomfortable when someone tries to paint your face for a party because it actually feels weird to have makeup on. Oh, and there's the downside of having to wait while everybody around you takes twice as long to get ready.

I stopped wearing makeup on my year abroad, first during four months in Seville, and then six in Luxembourg. This then continued into the rest of the year because by then, I felt completely comfortable with a makeup-free face and recognized it as something that was a healthy, happy habit, one that greatly benefited me.

Related: 7 Beauty Hacks That Will Change How You Use Makeup

I initially stopped wearing makeup for a practical reason: because I had forgotten to take very much of it with me. My mascaras, the only remnants of my makeup collection, were starting to smell questionable, and the climate was so beautiful in Seville that the idea of having anything chemical-based clinging to my face in the blistering heat was pretty unappealing. This habit continued into the Sevillian winter (the equivalent of our summer at its peak) by which point I had also decided to take up running. Once you've seen your face melt off with sweat in front of passing strangers, moments when you aren't wearing makeup are no longer so daunting.

In Seville, not wearing makeup wasn't so hard, because it was a clean slate. I was on my year abroad, so the people I met hadn't seen me with makeup—I had no 'front' to keep up, no thoughts of “Once they know what my real face looks like they won't want to know me.” People knew and liked me, people even told me I was beautiful, having seen my blank, un-made-up face on hot, sunny days when I had thought I might scare away every passing infant.

My lack of makeup continued through to Luxembourg, where I started working at a digital communications agency. This was a bit trickier, as many of the people around me were wearing makeup and were beautiful, slim, stylish French women. Between having gained a bit of Christmas weight and keeping to my decision to not wear makeup, I inevitably felt like a clunky blob. This continued for a few months, and was exacerbated by my feeling a bit “other” in this extremely monolingual company culture (if you're feeling left out and are going into the office bare-faced, it does make you feel a bit unwanted). However, once the initial period of adjustment passed, I again knew what it was like to feel liberated by a choice that at times felt a bit questionable.

Related: 14 Thoughts Girls Have When Applying Makeup

I had kept to my decision to not wear makeup, and despite some more city running, hadn't suddenly turned into a tiny French person overnight, but at the same time people were not treating me like I was an ogre in their closet. I went on countless nights out bare-faced, danced like a hooligan and felt ecstatic. I met people, had fun, and felt appreciated based on who I was as a person, and not on how I looked.

I've found that in many ways, the fear behind not wearing makeup is really just a mental barrier. It's an obstacle we make up (quite literally), all based on our irrational fears. Of course you don't look gross and disgusting with nothing on your face. Of course you won't freak out everyone in the vicinity and become unappealing overnight. The reason it's so scary is because you've built up an expectation of what you should look like. Your family, friends, the boys and girls in your life all expect you to look a certain way (or, at least, that's what you think), and you think that if, one day, you suddenly present them with your real face, they'll be let down, put out, disgusted, horrified.

You will also have to learn to love the real you—and as much as we all hate to admit it, that isn't always the easiest task. After all, we've been inundated with messages of how to "fix" our "flaws" which isn't the best for self-esteem. Despite this, not wearing makeup has now become a habit that I treasure. Here's what I learned from my year without makeup:

  • People will not run from you in fright. If you've kept up your makeup routine because you're worried people will notice 'what you really look like,' don't. People are far too bothered with themselves and are a lot less judgmental than we think. They will most likely celebrate and be proud of you for not wearing make up.
Related: 5 Products Makeup Artists Swear By
  • You don't need makeup to feel beautiful. When I stopped wearing makeup, against all my expectations, I still managed to feel beautiful. I still felt entitled to think of myself as an attractive and special human being. You don't need makeup to make you feel special. You are special.
  • Boys (and girls) will still like you. It's so easy to wear makeup every day and then get really freaked out about taking it off in front of your crush, but in reality, the people that matter don't mind and the people that mind don't matter.
  • Not wearing makeup cuts down the time it takes to get ready. You'll probably save at least 20 minutes each day. That's either 20 minutes more of sleep, of serious Instagramming, or of good Her Campus reading.
  • There will be difficult moments. Once, a guy shouted “you are f***ing ugly” at me in a club. It's hard to take that as anything other than a literal attack on your face, and you may feel that exposing your real face is what led to that situation, but the truth is, that people can be idiots whether you're wearing makeup or not. Don't take it personally, and accept that you won't always feel 100 percent amazing—and keep in mind that makeup won't fix that.

Not wearing makeup, just like wearing makeup, isn't for everyone. Some people genuinely just love putting on a bit of war paint and experimenting with different looks, and there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. But if you do feel scared to walk out into the world without makeup, that's when I would suggest trying a no-makeup week just to see how it feels. You may surprise yourself!

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Fall Boots

$

0

Boots are the classic fall closet staple—so you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the most mileage out of your favorite pair. We partnered with The FRYE Company to help you navigate your fall boot options.

1. Don’t sacrifice quality for style

As your go-to fall footwear, boots are an investment piece that you shouldn’t scrimp on. Poorly made boots are not only bad for your feet, but will easily fall apart after a grueling winter. You can have style and function all in one pair of boots, though. FRYE boots last a lifetime—their craftsmanship is unparalleled and they wear extremely well. They’ll take you from class to a night out to walks on the campus quad. We love how Emma of the blog, With a City Dream, styled her FRYE Sacha OTK boots and Farrah Fringe Bag. You shouldn’t settle for anything less with your most-worn footwear of the semester!

2.  Stop playing it safe

Your library get-up of worn jeans and boots with your college sweatshirt is fine, but we promise you can be a little edgier without sacrificing comfort. Think you can’t pull off over-the-knee boots? You can. We’re obsessed with how Taylor of Merged Fashion styled her FRYE Sacha OTK boots and Amy Shopper with skinny jeans and a loose plaid flannel. The over-the-knee style is cool and edgy, but can be subtle too.

3. Don't wear them with jeans only

We get it—your on-campus uniform of jeans and boots works. But you’re missing out if that’s the only way you style them. Don’t be afraid to show a little leg. FRYE boots look great with a skirt, like how blogger Christina of Looks by Lau styled her Parker Short booties and Amy Zip Satchel. Pair a denim mini with a simple black top for a super easy, cool girl look that works great in the classroom and at the local bar. Your favorite pair will get way more mileage if you look for new ways to style them rather than just settling for the classic jeans-and-boots ensemble!

4. Focus on versatility

Not every boot is going to work for you—but some brands just get it right every time. These Sacha OTK suede boots from FRYE, modeled by Tilden of style blog, To Be Bright, fit the bill. Flattering and effortless, we’re obsessed with how these boots look amazing with a skirt but could also easily look great with jeans. We're also obsessed with her FRYE Amy Shopper tote!

As you can see, there are several ways to get the most out of your favorite fall footwear. Make sure you’re working with a gorgeous, incredibly crafted pair of boots that will look chic for years to come—The FRYE Company goes above and beyond our wildest boot expectations. The best part? College students get 10 percent off! How will you style yours, collegiettes?

10 Reasons You're Getting Too Old to Trick-Or-Treat

$
0
0

We've all had that final year of trick-or-treating where we know when we leave the house in our PG-13 costumes, it'll be for the last time. But how do you know when that year should be? Your senior year in high school? When you turn eighteen? How about when you're twenty-one? Below are the tell-tale signs it's time to start handing out the candy, instead of asking for it!

1. You can't get your costume at Walmart anymore.

Usually, we hit a certain age where it doesn't matter what we dress up as. We just want a cheap costume so we can get as much candy as possible without spending a lot of money. Once you're too big for those $24.99 princess costumes at Walmart or Target, it's time to retire the trick-or-treat bag.

2. You have to start avoiding certain houses.

As a kid, you don't know or really care who lives where. But once you start having to avoid that one house around the corner because your ex lives there, we recommend you shut it down.

3. Your costume involves a tight dress and some form of animal ears.

The second you stop wearing kid-friendly costumes and start buying short dresses to mimic a Playboy bunny, don't even bother going door-to-door. Because mothers around the neighborhood probably won't be on board with your costume.

4. You'd rather drive around than walk.

Part of the trick-or-treat charm is walking door-to-door! Being exhausted but knowing you're tired because of that pillowcase full of Reese's is so worth it. When you decide you'd happily trade in your walking shoes for your car, it's time to drive to a party instead.

5. You worry too much about the calories.

That's really how you know you're too old to get the candy—when you care too much about how it affects your health.

6. You reminisce about the times when you got the good candy.

Because that was all that mattered when you were in middle school.

7. You can buy alcohol for yourself.

Time to just drink wine and hand out the candy at this point, ladies!

8. Pre-gaming is somehow part of your plan.

Drunk trick-or-treating probably isn't the best thing to do since cars and street lights are involved.

9. You don't get the costumes kids are wearing.

Once you're out of the loop with kids' costumes, leave the trick-or-treating to them!

10. You've tried every candy corn flavored alcoholic drink you can get your hands on.

Just no.

It's sad when we're no longer young enough to get free candy, but think about the things we can do now. Like, going to bars in costume and getting into scary, haunted attractions. Make Halloween enjoyable and buy your own candy if need be!

With Halloween around the corner, you might be stressing about figuring out easy costumes to throw together. Luckily, that little black dress (LBD) you have in your fashion arsenal is super-versatile to wear for Halloween, so you’re already halfway there! You can easily transform your LBD into a ton of different outfits just by adding a couple of accessories. HC is here to give you ideas on how to throw together your easiest (and cutest) Halloween costume yet!

1. Holly Golightly

If you’re into Hollywood glamour, take your LBD and transform it into Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly getup from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Chances are you or your friends have a little tiara in that one drawer full of costumes for themed parties and birthday fun, so use it well! Stop by a local costume shop to find Audrey’s classic long gloves and a cigarette holder. If you don’t have a costume store nearby, try a Goodwill or Target – you never know what you’ll find! Finally, glam yourself up in pearls and slip into your black pumps, and you’ll be the most elegant girl at the party.

2. Black Swan

Want to channel your inner ballerina – or maybe just your dark side? Wear a black tutu over a tight black bodycon dress to be the Black Swan. Pull your hair up into a tight bun, ballerina style. If you don’t want to go all out with your makeup by copying the Black Swan makeup, just do a berry lip and dramatic smoky eye. Wear ballet flats, and you’re all set!

3. A flapper

Want to pretend like you’re going to an extravagant party at Gatsby’s and not a frat basement? Then you should dress like it! That ‘20s flapper glamour is really easy to channel in an LBD. Wear some pearls, a boa, a headband and cute pumps and you’ll be ready to sweep Jay Gatsby – or a frat guy – off his feet. Finish off the look with a smoky eye and bee-stung red lips!

4. Biker chick

Biker Chick

A biker chick is an easy last-minute costume idea for the collegiette who wants to get a little edgy this Halloween. Throw a leather jacket on over your LBD and tie a bandana around your head. Wear some fishnets with a pair of motorcycle boots, and for the finishing touch, add some dark eye makeup.

5. Bunny

For all you Mean Girls fans out there, channel Regina George and be a bunny this Halloween. But rather than wearing only a leotard a la Mean Girls, wear your LBD! Bunny ears are really easy to find around Halloween and are pretty much all you need to make your costume clear.

6. Maleficent

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent is another great way to put your LBD to use. If you can’t find a black or purple cape to go with your outfit, a purple statement necklace is a chic way to get some of Maleficent’s purple in your look. Get a pair of Maleficent’s horns at your local costume shop or tie your hair up in two horns if you want to get creative. For makeup, wear purple eye shadow and a red lip!

7. A Pretty Little Liars character

Being one of the four girls from Pretty Little Liars is the easiest way to put your LBD to use. All you need to do is tease your hair and make it look like you’re covered in dirt – try smearing some brown eye shadow or bronzer over your arms, neck and face. Don’t forget your black heels, and as a finishing touch, try a smoky eye and a pale pink or nude lip.

Use these ideas to transform your LBD into an awesome DIY Halloween costume. They’re super easy to pull off and great if you’re in a last-minute scramble to find a costume!

Face Mapping: What Your Acne is Telling You

$

Okay, let’s face it: breakouts blow. Not to mention, we get them at the worst possible times, like during our perios and when we're really stressed out. Darn those pesky uncontrollable hormones, right? Well, maybe not. Hormones can absolutely cause breakouts, but they aren't the only thing—it turns out that some acne can be attributed to underlying internal health problems, which, believe it or not, aren't impossible to uncover and alleviate! Face mapping is an alternative medicine practice that looks at where acne appears on your face and points out possible health issues that may be associated with your acne.

Now, don’t assume you have a serious health problem just because you get a pimple on your chin now and again. Face mapping isn't an exact science, so be sure to take it with a grain of salt! However, if your acne frequently appears in the same place, or you have chronic acne and no solution, it might help consider what those pimples might be telling you. To get you started, here are eight of the most common places for acne to appear, and health problems that are associated with each location:

1. Forehead

Acne on your forehead is could be an indication that digestion is poor. Opt for water as often as possible, and reduce intake of caffeinated and overly processed drinks like soda. Water also helps flush out toxins and therefore aids in digestion, along with reducing overall fat intake.

2. T-zone

Acne on and around your nose has been said to be connected to your liver, so reduce your consumption of alcohol, processed food, greasy food and dairy products. Acne in the t-zone could also be your skin responding to a food allergy, so make sure your allergy tests are up-to-date!

3. Around the eyes

Girl, get hydrated! Skin around the eyes is supposedly linked to your kidneys, therefore anything from acne to dark circles in that area could be due to lack of water, according to Dermalogica (a well-known skincare brand that bases its treatments off of face mapping to diagnose and treat root causes of acne). Drink up!

4. Upper cheeks

According to Fitness Magazine, skin disorders on the top of your cheeks are linked to the lungs, which could be due to toxins from air pollution or smoking. Additionally, bacteria on objects that are constantly in contact with your face, such as your cell phone or makeup brushes, can also contribute to the problem.

5. Lower cheeks

Acne on your lower cheeks could be due to poor dental hygiene. It is usually attributed to problems with the gums, especially when they are inflamed on the inside, which could possibly be causing breakouts on the outside. Brushing and flossing daily, in addition to cutting out some sugary food and drinks, should take care of this problem.

6. Nose

If your nose is swollen, then your acne might have to do with high blood pressure. Changing up your diet by reducing sodium intake, avoiding energy drinks and eating more fruits and vegetables will lower your blood pressure may take care of it, although it may be worth visiting a doctor, as high blood pressure can be sign of other health problems. In an interview with Byrdie, Dr. Dan Hsu (a specialist in Eastern medicine) recommends reducing consumption of spicy food and meat, and swapping them out for fruits and veggies.

7. Ears

Like the eyes, the ears are also linked to kidneys, so if you are breaking out on your ears, it may be signaling dehydration. Be sure that you are drinking enough water and reducing your sodium intake!

8. Chin

Acne on or near your chin might be traced back to a hormonal imbalance, which can be caused by stress or menstruation. In the same Byrdie interview, Hsu suggests getting hormone levels tested, drinking spearmint tea and taking omega-3 supplements to take care of these breakouts.

There you have it, collegiettes. So much of our external health depends on our internal health, and skin is no exception. So the next time you have a huge breakout that just won’t disappear, try turning to your face map! That being said, it's important to remember not to self-diagnose if your acne gets worse, and instead make a trip to see your doctor or dermatologist. Of course, following a healthy lifestyle never hurts, and will likely leave you with softer, clearer skin regardless of face mapping's accuracy.

Brown Students Give Malia Obama the Apology She Deserves

College visiting season is upon us again, as pre-collegiettes anxiously begin trying to determine their fit at the multitude of institutions on their college lists. But for one unlucky high school senior, the usual stressors of the college search were amplified by some attention-seeking students. Her name? Malia Obama.

The eldest daughter of the Obama family has been busy making her rounds at some of the most prestigious institutions in America as of late, and for good reason! With an envious HBO internship under her belt and stellar academic marks, Malia's making us (and surely the President) proud as she finishes up high school strong.

But on her recent overnight stay at Brown University, Malia's privacy was breached in entirely disrespectful ways. Apparently, the notoriously chill vibe of the Ivy League campus wasn't enough to stop boastful party-goers from sharing personal details of Malia's night on social media without her consent. After arriving at a college party, she was unknowingly photographed next to a beer pong table, and numerous tweets bragged about seeing her take shots. As expected, word got out to major news sources like Buzzfeed as if the event were some sort of controversy, fully ignoring the fact that Malia had the right to experience college like any other prospie without having to worry about criticism—College visits are stressful enough!

Finally, however, Brown students have stepped up to the plate to apologize for their immaturity. In an editorial entitled "Sorry, Malia Obama" The Brown Daily Herald acknowledged the fact that the social media posts prompted by her visit were far from hospitable.

"It is a shame that Malia was unable to visit Brown and enjoy herself at a party without several news headlines coming out about it the next day," the article reads, noting that though students were rightfully excited about her visit, they didn't consider the ripple effects of their online boasts. "Social media has become such an ingrained part of our daily routine that we sometimes forget the wider effects it can have. What we choose to post on social media is not just visible to our friends; it is public to the world if we do not protect our accounts."

So let's remember to use discretion, and especially when our actions can implicate others in their outcomes. Like any human being, Malia Obama deserved and continues to deserve normalcy and privacy. After all, as our girl Kim (or the President himself) would say, can she live

Majority of Americans are Pro-Marijuana Legalization, Poll Says

This may seem obvious if you live on a college campus, but most people in the U.S. think pot should be legal.

A poll released by Gallup this past Wednesday reveals that almost 60% of Americans are in support of the legalization of marijuana. According to the poll, support is highest among millennials: 71% young adults born between 1981 and 1997 are pro-pot use. But does that mean that collegiettes are interested in this legalization? This is where the poll falls short, as it lacks the sufficient information regarding this demographic. Who are the people who are pro-pot, and are they collegiettes like you?

According to USA Today, the methods by which people use marijuana vary among age groups. For instance, in order to achieve a more powerful high, young adults concentrate marijuana into the form of wax or oil, and according to health experts, these concentrated products can lead to extreme cases of psychosis, including paranoia and hallucinations. But pro-legalization advocates say that most people use marijuana responsibly.

The results of the poll are a strong indication that a majority of Americans will vote pro-pot in the 2016 presidential election, according to the Washington Post.

"These days it’s not especially exciting to see yet another poll showing majority support for legalizing marijuana, but 58 percent is very strong share of the American people calling for change, and elected officials should listen," Tom Angell of the pro-legalization group Marijuana Majority told the Washington Post. "We’re seeing an increasing number of national politicians saying that it’s time to at least let states implement their own laws without federal interference. And we’re also seeing a growing number candidates endorsing legalization outright, which shows how mainstream this issue is now."

What do you think about marijuana legalization, and how will it affect you? Let us know!

Police were searching for suspects Friday morning in a shooting that occurred on the campus of Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tenn. late last night, according to Yahoo! News. At least one person is known to be dead and two more are injured.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. on Thursday night and reports state that it stemmed from a fight over a dice game that quickly escalated into a physical fight. It's also unclear as to whether anyone involved was a student at Tennessee State. The victim who was fatally shot has been identified as Cameron Selmon, a 19-year-old boy who was not enrolled at the school, according to the Tennessean. The other two victims were taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't considered serious.

This event comes just about a week after another shooting at Tennessee State, where shots were fired at a house party injuring three people. These shootings both come amid a string of others at college campuses across the country. The most deadly shooting occurred at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, where nine people were killed.

12 Easy Ways to Burn 200 Calories (Without Exercising!)

Spontaneous late-night snack runs, conversations over lattes and free food at events are as much a part of college life as essays, books and exams. But with those activities come extra calories that certainly have a way of sneaking up on you! If you find yourself a culprit of frequent snacking and want to work off those extra calories but don't have time to fit in a real workout, check out these 12 clever ways to burn 200 calories. And the best part is, you don't even have to enter the gym!

1. Walk or bike everywhere

Let's admit it—we've all been tempted to drive to places that we could easily walk to, whether it's classes or the library or the nearest grocery store. Melanie Ludwig, owner of Prestige Fitness, also suggests walking a lap around the buildings that you have classes in before class starts. For a 150-pound collegiette, walking for 40 minutes at a pace of three miles per hour burns 200 calories. Calculate how many calories you burn from walking here!

If walking isn't your thing, biking for 23 minutes can also burn 200 calories. Not really into pedaling? Try rollerblading, riding a scooter or getting off the bus early to walk to class. These little decisions can accumulate and make a huge difference for your health!

2. Have a stair-ing contest

Don't think we've forgotten about those dreaded stairs! We all know it's a no-brainer to take the stairs instead of the elevator, but sometimes we can’t help avoiding and hating on the stairs, especially when we have to lug around our own body weight in textbooks on a daily basis. But if you choose the stairs every day, your body will thank you in the long run. After all, a 150 to 160-pound person can burn 10 calories every minute she climbs stairs. That means that only 20 minutes of climbing a day will burn 200 calories!

3. Exercise while studying

It's really easy to stay in one place for hours on end when you have reading to do or an exam to study for. But it isn't good for your health, because as soon as you sit down, calorie burning drops down to one calorie per minute and enzymes that help break down fat drop by 90 percent.

"We are made to locomote, and inactivity leads to poor health," Ludwig says. To increase activity, Ludwig suggests sneaking in movement while you are otherwise preoccupied. "Have a lot of reading to do? Do it on a recumbent bike at a low resistance so that it's easy [and] your reading or studying is all you think about," Ludwig says. "I don't suggest this on a treadmill or elliptical as it is harder to balance, but you can try."

For a 150-pound collegiette, only 26 minutes on a recumbent bike, 26 minutes on an elliptical trainer at a moderate pace or walking on a treadmill at three miles per hour for 56 minutes will burn 200 calories. And you'll get your work done, too! If you don't have access to any of these exercise machines, check out these other exercises that you can do at your desk. Talk about multitasking!

4. Do your chores

For most of us, the early morning rush to class means that your bed is left unmade and your clothes are scattered around your room. And everything tends to stay that way—it's easy to leave chores to a (way) later date when your mom isn't there to remind you to do them. But if you desperately need to take care of the mess in your room, burning calories is a great incentive to get those chores out of the way!

Light housework, like doing laundry, burns 170 calories an hour. Who knows, maybe you'll even find your long-lost shirt or missing books along the way!

5. Put on your dancing shoes

Everyone needs a good dance session now and then. What better time to have one than while you're doing dreaded chores?

"Need to clean you room? Put on some music and get a swifter duster and voila!" Ludwig says. "You will be dancing while cleaning and not even notice that you are really exercising."

You'll be able to burn calories, have fun and cross off your to-do list in a breeze. Just 40 minutes of dancing can burn 200 calories--smooth moves not required! So crank up some fast-paced songs like "Wake Me Up" by Avicii and "Alive" by Krewella and channel your inner Beyonce!

6. Squat when you blow-dry your hair

After your nice morning shower, you pull out your hair dryer and start drying... and drying... and drying. Hair can take so long to dry, so why not squat up and down while you do it? You can burn 70 calories for every five minutes you do squats, so only 15 minutes of squatting will burn about 200 calories. Talk about starting your day off right! In fact, you can even go the extra mile and try squatting while brushing your teeth, making a cup of coffee, brushing your hair... you name it!

7. Work on your flexibility

Stretching feels good, helps protect you from injury and burns more than twice the number of calories as sitting. If you spend just 12 minutes a day doing stretches, you'll be able to burn more than 200 calories a week and be that much closer to touching your toes! You can also try doing stretches on the floor with your notes while studying.

8. Swap out your desk chair for an exercise ball

Those wooden dorm desk chairs can feel so uncomfortable after you've hunkered down in them for a few hours. To avoid this and burn some calories, consider swapping your desk chair for an exercise ball.

"My chair at my desk is a ball, so I also do some abdominal exercises while working, and stretch my hamstrings and hip flexors on the ball all the time, as being sedentary for too many hours is detrimental for our bodies," Ludwig says.

Sitting on an exercise ball increases calorie-burning by six percent, and since desk work burns around 106 calories per hour for a 135-pound individual, you can expect to burn 200 calories by doing work on the ball for an hour and 47 minutes. Feel like being more active? Doing a set of sit-ups and abdominal crunches on an exercise ball for 24 minutes burns 200 calories for a 150-pound person.

9. Drink ice-cold water

Next time you're thirsty, skip the room-temperature water. Instead, drink your water ice cold. That way you can get a metabolic boost of about 25 calories per glass, because your body has to use extra energy to warm the water. Down eight glasses of cold water a day, and you'll be burning 200 calories like nobody's business!

10. Walk and talk

Few things are nicer than catching up with a friend over the phone and talking for hours and hours on end. Next time, instead of sitting and chatting away, step outside and get some fresh air—if you go for a walk while you talk, you'll be so engrossed in conversation that you won't even notice that you're burning lots of calories! Walking and talking for an hour burns 200 calories—and you’ll get to catch up with a friend you may not have talked to in a while. It's a win-win!

11. Sing your heart out

Let's admit it—we all miss singing in the shower at home. Sure, this might have annoyed a few neighbors and made a few dogs howl, but you probably got away with it and it was totally worth it.

College is a little different. With 10 girls sharing the same bathroom, it's easy to feel bad or self-conscious about singing. But if you need help convincing yourself about the virtues of singing in the shower, just know that singing for an hour and a half burns 200 calories on average! So whether you like to lock yourself in your room to belt out a few of your favorite songs or have an Easy-A-inspired, Emma-Stone-esque scenario, you'll be burning those calories away and getting that much closer to becoming the next big pop star!

12. Laugh out loud

Who doesn't like to have a laugh attack with their best friends? Besides being totally fun, 10 to 15 minutes of laughter can increase energy expenditure by 10 to 40 calories per day. That means that about an hour and a half of laughing can burn 200 calories. So start practicing those jokes and tickling some funny bones!

Burning calories doesn't have to mean going to the gym and working your way through your usual exercise routine. With a little creativity and attentiveness, you'll be able to burn those extra 200 calories without even noticing it and continue to enjoy those snack sessions and coffee dates!

We've FINALLY Got Details About the New Harry Potter Play

Book your flights to London now, collegiettes—we finally have the first details about the mysterious new Harry Potter play we heard about a few months back. Based on an original story by J.K. Rowling herself, the play is set to open in London’s West End in summer 2016 and is the eighth installment of the Harry Potter saga (not a prequel!).

New artwork promoting the play has just been released, showing a small child sitting in a bird’s nest, whom many speculate is Harry’s youngest son, Albus—who is apparently the Cursed Child. The show’s official website has offered this synopsis:

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Previews will begin in June of next year (PSA: tickets go on sale to the general public October 30!). Although casting has not yet been announced, Imogen Heap is doing the show’s music, and it has been reported that Rowling has been heavily involved throughout the whole process. The play will be presented in two parts, and it is recommended that audiences see them on the same day or on two consecutive nights.

We can barely contain our excitement about this—this play either needs a Broadway transfer right away, or we have to figure out how to apparate to London ay-sap!

Lincoln Chafee Drops Out of Presidential Race

Lincoln Chafee announced Friday that he is withdrawing from the 2016 presidential race. The former governor of Rhode Island was having trouble garnering enough support for a serious presidential run. In a survey after last week’s Democratic debate, 0 percent of college women chose Chafee as the debate’s winner.

“As you know I have been campaigning on a platform of prosperity through peace,” Chafee said during a speech at the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum. “But after much thought I have decided to end my campaign for president today.”

Chafee announced his withdrawal just a few days after Jim Webb dropped out of the Democratic primary—though Webb has left the possibility open that he may run as an Independent.

For now, the Democratic party must choose between Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, former Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland and Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig.

In the rest of his speech at the Women's Leadership Forum, Chafee encouraged women to use their talents to bring an end to war.

"Studies show that women lead differently than men, and that women are more likely to be collaborative and team-oriented," he said. "It is undeniable the benefits women provide to the pursuit of peace."

An iPhone Saved This Missing Georgia Tech Student's Life

A 24 year-old Georgia Tech student went missing after a sorority event in Atlanta last Friday. Thanks to his friends (and a smartphone!), he was found alive on Monday. James "Jimmy" Hubert reportedly left the party after 11 p.m. with his date's iPhone in the pocket of his jacket, and wasn't seen for more than 48 hours after that. According to USA Today, the police were set to resume their search at 10 a.m. on Monday, but Hubert's friends were too worried to wait.

Emma Jeffery, who went to high school with Hubert, had the brilliant idea of using the Find my iPhone function on his date's phone to locate him. The app led Jeffery and Alexandria Vandelinde, also a former classmate, to railroad tracks seven miles away from the party.

"We got out of the car, then we jumped over two train tracks and walked," Jeffery told USA Today. "We walked about 10 minutes past where the ping was. We were about to turn around, which is when I said, 'Is that a person?'" Jeffery originally thought her friend wasn't alive, but Vandelinde called his name and he woke up.

Jeffery and Vandelinde had been alerted by Hubert's Phi Delta Theta brothers, who noticed the disappearance on Saturday. The fraternity helped organize the search party by posting about it on its Facebook page.

There will be a search party meeting at the Georgia Tech Police Department tomorrow morning at 10am, to continue the...

It's still not clear what happened, but Jeffery thinks Hubert was probably mugged. He needed treatment for hypothermia and other injuries.

According to his mother, Hubert suffered serious injuries, including partial paralysis, bleeding and several broken bones. He underwent surgery on Wednesday and has received tons of support from friends and family.

UPDATE: Just heard from the surgeon Jimmy made it through surgery with flying colors.

While the police continues to investigate, we wish the student a quick recovery. What happened to him was horrible, but we're glad he has such a strong support system to help him through this difficult time.

Hillary Clinton Testifies in Another Hearing About the Benghazi Attacks

$

The seemingly endless investigation into Hillary Clinton’s role in the U.S. government’s handling of the 2012 Benghazi attacks continued with a day-long hearing on Thursday. For over eight hours, Republicans grilled the former Secretary of State about her alleged neglecting to properly secure the American diplomatic mission in Libya, where four Americans were killed in terrorist attacks.

Republicans have admitted that the continued investigation has been politically motivated, in an effort to mar Clinton’s reputation and hurt her chances of being president in 2016. Her critics rarely brought up the email scandal that has plagued Clinton throughout the year, but when it was addressed, she held to the same response she always has: she regrets using a private server for her emails, but maintained that no classified information was exchanged on the server. The hearing held yesterday marked the first time in over two years that Clinton directly addressed her critics about the scandal.

While Democrats maintain that this is a continued attempt by Republicans to launch a partisan attack on Clinton, members of the GOP believe they are ignoring a crucial mishandling by the former Secretary of State that could be telling of her ability to handle future crises as president. This resulted in high tension and even shouting matches between the two sides throughout the hearing.

Though visibly tired by the end of the day, which lasted from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with breaks, Clinton largely remained calm, composed and in control, which is being seen as a victory for the Democratic party. She took responsibility for the 2012 attacks, but maintained that she herself did not make the ultimate decision of whether or not to provide more security at the site the four Americans were based at. On multiple occasions she referenced the courage of the victims, particularly ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.

House Democrats have noted that this investigation (seven have been conducted previous to this one) has cost millions of dollars and lasted longer than the Watergate investigation. Another interesting fact: Clinton's aides have stated that from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday night, immediately after the long day of investigations ended, her campaign had its best fundraising hour yet. This probably says a thing or two about how people feel about what went down during the hearing.
